Burgess Shale Essay
Burgess Shale
The Burgess Shale was first discovered in 1909 by a Paleontologist named Charles Walcott and is
believed to be over 500 million years ago in Middle Cambrian. This geological formation was first
found near a mountain by the name of Mount Burgess, for which it was named after, in Canada.
Similar formations have been uncovered in China, Europe, USA and many other places around the
world. The Burgess Shale is one of the most important of fossil type formations due to the fact that
they are one of the most preserved including not only the hard parts of an animal such as the tissue,
muscles and organs, but also gives evidence that soft bodied creatures lived at the time.

Kateri Tekakwitha Biography
Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 to an Algonquian mother and Mohawk father. Tekakwitha was
the name given by her Mohawk people. It translates to she who bumps into things. She was born in the
Mohawk village of Ossernenon west of present day Auriesville, New York. She was the daughter of
Kenneronkwa, a Mohawk chief, and Tagaskouita, an Algonquin woman. Mohawk warriors recaptured
Tagaskouita after she was baptized Roman Catholic and educated by French missionaries east of
Montreal, eventually marrying Kenneronkwa. Tekakwitha was the first of their two children. France
held almost as much territory as the British in North America. New France was organized as small
communities holding close links to Indian villages. The major focus of the economy was trade.

Tekakwitha was said to have lain on a thorny sleeping mat while praying for the conversion and
forgiveness of her kinsmen. Piercing the body to draw blood was a traditional practice of the Mohawk
and other Iroquois nations. She lived at Kahnawake the remaining two years of her life. She learned
more about Christianity under her mentor Anastasia, who taught her about the practice of repenting for
sins. When the women learned of nuns, they wanted to form their own convent and created an
informal association of devout women. In 1680, Tekakwitha s health began to fail. When she was on
her deathbed, villagers gathered together. Catherine Tekakwitha died around 3 p.m. on Holy
Wednesday, April 17, 1680, at the age of twenty three or twenty four. After her death, people noticed a
physical change in her appearance. Her smallpox scars were said to disappear. After her death in 1680,

How I As A Director Will Approach Directing Chekhov
Chekhov is still associated with the past, but not a specifically Russian or historic past... the world
evoked in a Chekhov play by inventive modern directors confronts the past with the present...
(Laurence Senelick, Director s Chekhov, in A Cambridge Companion to Chekhov, p189.)
Discuss the above quote with reference to your experiences of preparing to direct/design a Chekhov
play.

Within this essay I will look at how I as a director will approach directing Chekhov, commenting on
how I went about choosing the sections of the script I wish to use, why I chose these sections and how.
I will then reference Katie Mitchell s twelve golden rules on working with actors to demonstrate how I
will approach my rehearsals and working with the actors. I will then go on to mention how and where
the piece will be performed, continuing on to how I will use there lighting, sound and setting finishing
with costume.
The sections chosen are about illness, whether it be mental or physical. Throughout the piece the
audience/readers are constantly reminded that someone is ill, whether it is Anna or Ivanov. This doesn
t necessarily mean this is what Chekhov wants us to interpret from the performance as there are many
interpretations: for example, the play could be interpreted as being about hypocrisy, as most characters
reinforce this with the words they speak to each other. Another interpretation may be the loss of
vitality on Ivanov s part; his deploring the loss of

Girl Interrupted Summary
In the movie Girl Interrupted its plot occurs in the late 1960s, Susanna Kaysen played by Winona
Ryder is an eighteen year old girl who finds herself in Claymoore Hospital following an OD. Susanna
talks to the psychiatrist and tells her of the delusions she s been having. She had also been having an
affair with the husband of her parents friend. The Psychiatrist suggests that combining a bottle of
aspirin and a bottle of vodka was a suicide attempt. Susana denies this and he recommends a brief
period of rest at Claymoore. She befriends some fellow patients and forms a small group of troubled
women in her ward. Susanna is particularly captivated by Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie), a diagnosed
sociopath. Lisa runs away and when she returns to the ward, she notices that her old best friend s place
has been taken by Susanna. She demands to know what happened to her best friend, eventually
realizing that she had committed suicide. Lisa encourages Susanna to stop taking her medications
and/or trade them with others, and generally resist the influences of therapy. During a visit outside the
ward at a nearby ice cream shop, Susanna is confronted by her mother s friend, the angry wife of
Susanna s old English teacher, with whom she had an affair, and her daughter. The woman harshly
berates Susanna, but Lisa intervenes with an oral assault, horrifying the older woman. As a result, Lisa
loses her outside privileges. Susanna s former boyfriend, Toby Jacobs (Jared Leto), comes to visit. He

Important Data Compression Techniques For Reducing The...
Abstract: one of the important data compression techniques for eliminating the duplicate copies of
repeating data is the data deduplication, and has been widely used in cloud storage to reduce the
amount of storage space and save bandwidth. This method is useful when there are number of copies
that having the duplication in private cloud, which will reduce the amount of repeated files after
applying this technique we will be obtaining the files with no duplication .To protect the
confidentiality of sensitive data while supporting deduplication, the convergent encryption technique
has been proposed to encrypt the data before outsourcing. To better protect data security, this paper
makes the first attempt to formally address the problem of authorized data deduplication. Different
from the traditional deduplication systems, the differential privileges of users are further considered in
duplicate check besides the data itself. We also present several new deduplication constructions
supporting authorized duplicate check in private cloud architecture. As we are using the private cloud
architecture which makes our processing removal of the duplicate files easily. more than that security
that is been provided in this is mostly high . Security analysis demonstrates that our scheme is secure
in terms of the definitions specified in the proposed security model. As a proof of concept, we
implement a prototype of our proposed authorized duplicate check scheme and conduct testbed

What Is The Theme Of Forrest Gump
Prejudice, violence, socioeconomic difficulties, sexual assault, stigmas against people with
disabilities, inequality, and politics. These topics resonate throughout the tale of one young southern
boy Forrest Gump. In Robert Zemeckis s film, Forrest Gump, the tale of a disadvantaged and disabled
young boy, who grew up in the South, showcases, through light hearted comedy, the historical
evolution of prejudice and discrimination in the United States of America. Forrest Gump never fit in
with his peers during his youth, as they saw him as a strange person who had no place in their society
simply the same advantages were not available to him upon birth. Fortunately, he stumbled upon a girl

Additionally, while growing up, I would spend my Sunday s going to religious classes at the nearby
temple, or I would spend my summers with my grandparents learning about my religion. Throughout
these classes and the time I spent with my grandparents I one creed became ingrained in my mind be
kind to others no matter their background. Consequently, this idea instilled itself in me from an early
age, the idea that no matter sex, age, religious disparities, race, nationality, socioeconomic standings,
or physical differences people were inherently all equals. This idea manifested in my mind and
changed the way I perceived all components of my life. In the case of Forrest Gump, the movie further
affirmed that all people should be treated as equals and looked at as simply people. Forrest s simple
mindset and perception reaffirmed this belief to me. The movie confirmed that the idea that people
were equal, on all levels, was not something difficult to understand especially when someone as
simple as Forrest Gump could understand this. Through my religion, in which treating all people with
kindness is integral, allowed me to view the movie through this lens. The foundation religion laid for
me has affected all components of my life because it has shifted my perception, my understanding,

It is expected that this product will generate cash flows for an indefinite period of time. The license
has an initial term of 5 years but by paying a nominal fee, Palmiero can renew the license indefinitely
for successive 5 year terms. What amount should be amortized for the year ended December 31, 2012?
1 . Alatorre should report the patent at $600,000 (net of $400,000 accumulated amortization) on the
balance sheet. The computation of accumulated amortization is as follows.
Amortization for 2005 and 2006 ($1,000,000/10) X 2 $200,000
2007 amortization: ($1,000,000 $200,000) ÷ (6 2) 200,000
Accumulated amortization, 12/31/07 $400,000
2. Alatorre should amortize the franchise over its estimated useful life.
Because it is uncertain that Alatorre will be able to retain the franchise at the end of 2015, it should be
amortized over 10 years. The amount of amortization on the franchise for the year ended December
31, 2007, is
$40,000: ($400,000/10).
3. These costs should be expensed as incurred. Therefore $275,000 of organization expense is reported
in income for 2007.
4. Because the license can be easily renewed (at nominal cost), it has an indefinite life. Thus, no
amortization will be recorded. The license will be tested for impairment in future periods.

Assess The Causes Of Murder
Murder is an act of taking one s life unlawfully for own benefits (Pine, 2016). Such behaviours have
to be severely reprimanded. However, there are a few causes of murder which need to be considered
by the community insanity, self defence and imperfect legal system.
First of all, some people murder simply because they go insane. Parry and Moyes (2013) said that
there were actually 1216 victims who got killed by the people with mental illness from 2001 to 2010
in the United Kingdom. Some of the murderers were suffering from mental disorders; so, they could
not control themselves on what they are doing or what they are going to do. There was a 60 year old
man who shot dead his neighbour. Two consultant forensic psychiatrists provided evidences which had
proven the man was suffering from mental illness; thus, he was unable to control himself from his
actions (O Riordan, 2016). Moreover, it is difficult to understand the causes of a child who murdered
his or her parents, the one who brings them up; however, insanity might be one of the reasons that
contributed to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are some murderers had been released from the prison, and this is undoubtedly giving them
chances to commit murder again. Five murderers were released from the prison despite getting life
sentences, and they committed murder again within the weeks of being freed from the jail (Robinson,
2013). Then, it is somehow encouraging people to commit a crime provided they are careful enough
and without leaving any strong evidence after committing a crime for allowing the judge sentenced
them to the prison. A 46 year old man had been killed, and the two suspects were released from jail
without any charge due to lack of evidence (Robinson, 2016). A legal system plays an important role
in maintaining social order, but it consists of loopholes, which enable some law breakers escape from

Humanism In Thomas More s Utopia By Thomas More
Thomas More writes Utopia, the comedic, fictional travel log about a no place society to discuss the
various religious, political, and social ideals influenced by humanism. A medieval classically trained
humanist, Thomas More is also influenced by the late medieval social, political, and religious
movements developing from the Plague and the Hundred Years War. In Utopia, More illustrates a
humanist society by discussing agriculture in the economy, religion and happiness, and the structure of
the government which was ultimately influenced by the late medieval ideals.
Thomas More elaborates on economy in his book Utopia comparing it to the economy in Europe. The
economy of Utopia is based on agriculture. Although agriculture is not a luxurious job, everyone has
to do it because it is a shared experience. One will not complete this task for more than two years
because everyone rotates in and out of the job. This is an example of humanism as the society
recognizes that individuals need relief. Human beings are not to be exploited, it is a joint effort as seen
through the idea of civic humanism; commoners are social utilities. In comparison to Utopia, the land
in England was owned by the lords. The farmers worked for the lords who eventually profited from
the land. Agricultural was a job for the poor, watched over by the wealthy. In Utopia, each city had its
own land, owned by the cities who then profit from the land. Therefore, they are not exploiting

It should be noted that some materials exhibit more than one of the above properties and It is better to
use them in combination with conventional material. Sensing Materials 1. Optical Fibers: Fiber optic
sensors with crack monitoring capability have been developed by Wolff and Messelier (1992), Ansari
et al (1993); Voss and Wanser (1994).It is also used to detect moisture content. A sensor for moisture
detection have been developed by Michie et al (1994). 2. Piezoelectric materials: Piezoelectric
materials have two unique properties which are interrelated. When a piezoelectric material is
deformed, it gives off a small but measurable electrical material it experiences a significant increase in
size (up to a 4% change in volume). They are often used to measure fluid compositions, fluid density,
fluid viscosity, or the force of an impact. In stress and pressure sensing, the PVDF materials have been
found to give a better electrical response. Actuating Materials 1.Piezoelectric materials: A
piezoceramic material can be used as a strain sensor by taking advantage of the direct piezoelectric
effect that converts a mechanical action into an electric charge. But the same material can be also used
for actuation applications by using the converse piezoelectric effect that.converts an electrical field
into a mechanical strain. 2. Shape memory alloys: Shape memory alloys (SMA s) are

ABSTRACT : In this paper we simulatd an optical transmission system in optical fiber using different
pulses .The optical fiber system used in telecommunication system has small size or dimension, low
loss and low interference from outside environment. Optical fiber are of various configurations , we
are using fiber bragg grating as the dispersion compensator in the fiber optic cable . We are using FBG
in the simulation as because it offers more bandwidth .Optisystem software is used to analyse the
optical transmission system . In the simulation of the communication system appropriate values of the
input power , fiber cable length and attenuation coefficient is taken around the cable section and the
output pwer , noise figure , gain is found out at the receiver. The transmitter frequency and cut off
frequency of the receiver is made constant .

The Bewitching of Anne Gunter
HST 402: Seminar in European History
1000 Word Paper
Throughout the history of witchcraft it has been hard to establish if any of these accusations on
‘witches were actually true due to lack of records and proof, although it now seems certain that the
vast majority of women incited were innocent. In the book The Bewitching of Anne Gunter we can see
how these allegations can be completely fabricated for personal gain and revenge.
The British Isles, was a tense and troubled time in the late 1500 s/early 1600 s where the book is set.
Anxiety arose between the Catholics and the Protestants, which would eventually lead to the English

The Gregory family later tried to get Gunter charged with manslaughter, they failed but Gunter never
forgave their attempt.
A few years later in the summer of 1604 when Anne collapsed with what all believed to be an attack
of the mother (hysteria), Brian Gunter saw his chance to get revenge on the Gregory s and discredit
them.
At first Anne claims she didn t attribute this sickness to witchcraft in anyway. It was only later that
year in October when the illness came back; that she maintains her father and the neighbours
concocted the bewitchment with the aim of blaming Elizabeth Gregory. If we look for motive, Brian
bringing the Gregory family into disrepute in this manner would be a fitting form of revenge.
Throughout the supposed bewitching, Anne feigned fits and trances, saw familiars, vomited pins,
showed psychic powers and made it so her clothes unlaced themselves during fits. All of this was to
convince witnesses of her ‘bewitching , in order to further support this her father would give her
potions to drink. One to induce vomiting and fits, and another to enable her to suffer pain and not feel
it. In the court case Anne testified that it was the neighbour Alice Kirfoote who would stick pins into
her body, to show the numbness.
During the various visits to the Gunter house to observe Anne s behaviour, it is believed that one
visitor gave Brian Gunter a lengthy article entitled The most strange and admirable discoverie of the

This is a collective effervescence because he captured the interest of the masses during the 19th

patron of bodybuilding to access divine power to gain a muscular body. These actions include their
bodies and bodily sensations, as well as gestures to induce spiritual meaning and experiences

Carrie White Compare And Contrast
Contrasting the house De Palma made into an uncanny character of its own, this house is nice looking
and spacious; its yard and street are fertile and well maintained; the walls appear freshly painted and
light colored; the furniture is pleasingly organized and equipped for company; and condemnatory male
religious icons don t border the female residents and shimmer down at them as they did in the
previous version. Although some of the events that take place in the household are far from normal,
the film gives no indication that Carrie is not in a healthy environment. By highlighting the normality
of Carrie s living conditions the director removes the focus off of the mother daughter relations.
In the original version, there was a sense of self hatred, but in the latest version, that self hatred is
magnified. Margaret White s self harm in the original version seemed like a ploy to increase the fear
of her daughter. However, in Pierce s version anytime she is on screen in the new edition it raises ...

The original version did a perfect job of making Carrie White look weak, but in the latest version, she
appears the opposite. Her being weak in the beginning made the audience feel more sympathetic to her
situation at home. Margaret White in the newer version seemed to be the weakest character in the film,
and thirty minutes into the film Carrie White is already sassing back to her mother. Also, Carrie White
disregards her curfew while she was out looking for dresses in the film leaving her mother worried
sick. Her actions in the film don t seem like an adolescent that is afraid of her mother. Rarely are there
scenes in Pierce s film where Carrie shrinks at the sound of her mother raising her voice and abusing
her. In this film, it seems as if Carrie is controlling her mother. Again, the director wants to remove the
aspect of her mother being a bully at home to focus on the bullies at

How an OEMS helps Buy Side firms move beyond the three quotes framework

Financial institutions are acting as fiduciaries to their investors and clients. In the execution process,
buy side traders need to demonstrate reasonable steps to determine a best execution condition, follow
their defined firm level best execution trading policy and perform fair dealing to all client accounts on
trades. Broker dealers are obligated to provide best execution opportunities to buy side clients as well.
In the US market, both SEC and FINRA have articulated the responsibility of broker dealers to
provide best executions that are reasonably available. According to CFA institute s trade management
guidelines, best execution is defined as the trading process firms apply that seeks to maximize the
value of a client s portfolio within the client s stated investment objectives and constraints .
In the recent development of the EU s MiFID II regulation, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) set
out additional guidelines on best execution, in its Conduct of Business Sourcebook (COBS 11).
Trading venues, System Internalisers, and liquidity providers are required to publish data relating to
execution quality free of cost. Firms have to publish their top five execution venues annually, and
demonstrate they have complied with the execution policies of both their clients and relevant
regulatory authorities, according to ESMA regulatory technical standards (RTS). It asks firms to take

Analysis Of Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose
Extended Analysis Twelve Angry Men
Justice is a concept that is crucial to a fair and just society. For hundreds of years, countries have
developed constitutions and other documents in place to form justice for those within the country. In
Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, the idea of justice is bounced around by twelve men on a jury.
These men have the unthinkable decisions of whether a suspected murderer is given the death penalty
or able to walk free. The jury in Twelve Angry Men made the most just decision they could. To
understand how the decision they made was just and to explain some background, this essay will
cover a few major ideas. It will talk about how Reginald Rose included the ideas of: reasonable doubt,
being innocent until proven guilty, the jury system, and public defenders.
Twelve Angry Men touches on one of the key principles of the American criminal justice system. This
is the belief of the defendant being innocent until proven guilty. The idea is to give every person a fair
trial that follows the rules set forth in the constitution. In Twelve Angry Men, a young man is on trial
for the murder of his father. Many of the jurors jump to conclusions about the defendant s guilt
because of his lack of wealth and his ethnicity. Several of jurors make comments similar to these
people and kids like this are always up to no good (Rose 24). This shows an assumption based not on
the person, but on a very broad, vague, and stereotypical view. The biggest

Dai Jo Bo s Plagued With Righteousness
Serve, the fourth album by London based quintet WorldService Project, is composed of eight energetic
tracks whose musical irreverence derives from a blend of impactful punk rock, stimulating funk,
authoritative heavy metal, and light jazz.
Plagued With Righteousness links passages that can go from acutely boisterous to soaringly
atmospheric. The piece is a confluence of funk groove a la Morphine and classic heavy metal with an
easy melodicism, more in the line of Scorpions than Judas Priest. While the trombonist spreads
energizing lines, keyboardist Dave Morecroft, the band s principal composer, solos like if he had a
guitar in his hands.
Sometimes disruptive, sometimes ultra compact, Dai Jo Bo is a spunky punk exercise punctuated by a

Open Court Observation On Criminal Cases
I chose to do my open court observation on criminal cases. Criminal cases usually involve attorneys
that try to prove their argument to the judge. I felt as though this setting would be more interesting to
sit and observe versus a civil case where you have two people trying to settle a dispute. Its interesting
to see how actual attorneys and judges act in a courtroom instead of what is portrayed on TV. My local
courthouse which is in a police station holds preliminary hearings. A preliminary hearing is where the
judge decides if there is enough evidence that there was a crime committed and you committed a
crime. If the prosecutor fails to do this, then some or all the charges filed against you can be
dismissed. There was two different parts to this process that I saw during my observation. The first
one is when the defendant waives their hearing. Then the second being where the defendant decides to
go through with the hearing. During my observation there was about ten cases, and all but two of them
followed through with the hearing. This was very surprising to me as I watched because I couldn t
understand why someone wouldn t want to at least see if the prosecution had sufficient evidence
against them. Also it doesn t even give their lawyer a chance to argue on their behalf against the
prosecution. The first formal person to walk into the courtroom was the public defender. I watched as
he called out names, and spoke briefly to nearly every person in the room. My immediate

How Effectively Does the Poet Convey Aspects of Change in...
How effectively does the poet convey aspects of change in Funeral Blues ?
Funeral Blues by W. H. Auden is a poem is about death and grief. It was originally written as a
satirical poem about the death of a politician, though was later edited to become solemn. The poet
effectively conveys aspects of change, such as the human condition in relation to the experience of
loss. This is conveyed through tone, metaphors, imagery and anaphora.
The aspect of the human condition and our response to loss is expressed through the tone of the poem.
The tone is an example of how of how a person would react and treat the world around when they lose
someone. An imperative tone is created through the diction of verbs. In the first stanza, the ... Show

This shows how much the narrator has lost as they have indicated that they have not relied on anyone
or anything else. In the last stanza, the narrator orders that the metaphysical be taken away. The verbal
commands, such as dismantle and sweep , have negative connotations to them and therefore assert
how redundant life now seems for the person.
Hyperbole and personification is used to indicate how difficult it can be to come to terms with loss
and how alone one can feel. The hyperbolic orders in stanza four to take away the features of space
and earth, such as pack up the moon... , which is impossible, is indicative that the narrator has not yet
come to terms with the change. The absence of the objects producing light, such as the stars... , which
are expressed through the visual imagery creates a sense of increasing darkness which is parallel to the
absence and loneliness experienced by the narrator. The personification of the aeroplanes in stanza
two is an aural declaration of how the narrator is feeling. Moaning suggests the pain and agony of
which the narrator is experiencing.
Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden effectively uses a range of techniques such as tone, imagery, metaphors
and amphora to creatively express the feeling of loss inevitably experienced by humans due to change.
The author also expresses a

Panda Research Paper
The ancestors of Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which are also known as giant pandas, evolved about 40
million years ago. The pandas are native to Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu areas in China with their
largest population in the Minshan, Qinling, and Qionglai mountain ranges. However, their smallest
populations are in the mountain ranges of Lianshan, Daxiangling, and Xiaoxiangling. In 1974 1977,
the estimated population was 2, 459 and had then experienced a major decrease, but is now increasing
and is currently at 1, 864. Ailuropoda melanoleuca have stocky bodies with a round head, that contains
a large muscular jaw, and a short tail. The body is a white color, although, the limbs, ears, shoulders,
and eyes are a black color. In some areas, the black color has a chestnut red colored tinge to it. On the
panda s palms, there is an extra pseudo thumb, which is also known as the panda s thumb . The name
masks what it really is because the extra thumb is a pad of skin that protects a wrist bone. The height
of one panda ranges from a little less than five feet to almost six feet while their weight can range

civilization, having influenced every aspect of modern society, from literature to mathematics. Even
today, Roman law and foundation of government forms the basis of several modern democracies. The

Secondly, the construction of the roads greatly amplified the strength and stamina of the Roman
soldiers. Augustus, the first Roman emperor, made it a policy that the soldiers were to keep busy, and
therefore stay out of trouble, which meant that all of the free time that the soldiers had was utilized in
the maintenance and the construction of the roads. Through the construction of the roads, the Romans
became infamous for their strength and stamina, and were viewed across Europe as a deadly force to
be reckoned with.
`It is no easy task to confine luxury within the limits of an empire. The most remote countries of the
ancient world were ransacked to supply the pomp and delicacy of Rome` (Gibbon, 75). In addition to
strengthening the military, the Roman roads also had numerous economic benefits. With over 53,000
miles of paved roads spanning across Europe, the Roman Empire was much more connected, and
travel was considerably easier. This led to Rome becoming the centre of trade across Europe, with
exotic goods coming in from every corner of the world. Aelius Aristides, a famous orator, is quoted to
have said: ` Large continents lie around the Mediterranean Sea and never ending supplies of goods
flow from them to you [the Roman people]. Everything from every land and every sea is shipped to
you . . . so that if anyone wanted to see all these things he would either have to travel the world or live
in Rome. ` (La Bédoyère, 104). This statement was

Starbucks Financial Ratios
If you were an accountant for a potential investor in this company, explain which of these ratios would
be of the most interest to you. In your opinion, what other ratio or ratios beyond the ones listed above
should also be considered in an investment context?
Investors refer to people who willingly input money into a business with the expectations of a return
in future. Normally, investors have an interest in all the ratios as they indicate the financial health of a
firm. One of the most important ratios to potential investors is return on shareholders equity. The ratio
measures the percentage return that investors get for every dollar of their investment in a company.
For example, from the calculation above, Macy s Inc shareholders got a 25.18% for every dollar
invested in year 2015. A high ROE is an indicator of high returns to the shareholders. Profit margin

Investors are risk averse and want to be sure that they will get back value for their money from a
company. The ratio analyses the business s ability to pay interest expense i.e. how many times the
company s earnings can cover interest costs. The higher the ratio, the better the company s liquidity.
Use of financial leverage has been known to lead to bankruptcy of companies hence the need to ensure
that a business can pay back financing costs before making an investment. There are several other
ratios that should be considered in an investment context including P/E ratio, debt to equity ratio,
dividend yield and asset turnover ratio. P/E ratio indicates how much money an investor is willing to
pay to acquire one unit of a company based on the earnings. The ratio is often indicates whether a
company is overvalued or undervalued. A high P/E ratio is a sigh that investors expect the company to
provide higher returns in the future. Thus, this ratio enables potential investors to understand market

The development of transportation system in the United States is a mandate of the federal government
as delineated by the Constitution. The US has enjoyed a legacy in development and exploration of
transport system channels. As a result, this has enhanced movement of people and goods across the
nation. Presently, the US has an advanced network of paved highways and the world s most

US can be considered as a blessing and a curse in terms of its ability to increase and reduce urban

questions and/or hypotheses. One analysis that we perform on each variable is the distribution of their
scores. As with other powerpoints, this powerpoint supplements your readings for the purpose of
providing a better understanding of the module s concepts. Yet, it does not replace the need for reading
your textbook. Additionally, embedded in the powerpoint are questions to test your assimilation of
these concepts. So, let s begin. Slide 2: As humans, we acquire knowledge with visual applications or

The Treaty Of Waitangi And New Zealand Essay
Introduction
The Treaty of Waitangi is one of the most important documents in relation to New Zealand s political
and social history. It set out an important agreement between the British Crown and the native
inhabitants of New Zealand, the Maori (Waitangi Tribunal, n.d.). This agreement established Crown
rights over the land of New Zealand and, for the Maori, the guarantee of the protection of their
interests as well as giving them the same rights as the British settlers (Ministry for Culture and
Heritage, n.d.). The principles of this document have been integrated into much legislation since its
creation and it has also found places within New Zealand s constitution.
This essay will attempt to portray the role that the Treaty has played in the past, its current role, and its
future role with regards to New Zealand s constitution. Before this is possible however, one must first
know something about the current state of New Zealand s constitution in order to see how the Treaty s
principles can be, and are, integrated into the constitution.
New Zealand s Constitution
The purpose of New Zealand s constitution is to provide for the creation and structuring of major
government institutions, to state the power that these institutions have, and to then regulate these
institutions to a certain extent (Keith, K. 2008). It is not a typical constitution as it is not a written
constitution , unlike with many other countries around the world. In respect to this, it has evolved to

She was persistent, and persistence is a great way to achieve results in the manner needed or wanted.
Because of these qualities combined, she was a motivator. To see the change necessary, others must
see the need for the change and believe in the vision, and Norma motivated them to see that vision of a
better work environment. When the managers promoted Norma Rae to a supervisor position, she
noticed an immediate difference in the relationships she had with the workers. The workers viewed
her as if she was one of the managers who told everyone what and when to do something. Her rapport
with the workers dwindled quickly including her mother and father who worked at the plant too.
Norma quickly realized that the role the management team had in the plant was not what she wanted

Climate Change Is A Hot Topic
Climate change is a hot topic (pun intended), with supporters on both sides. Some claim that climate
change is a hoax, while others agree that it is happening. I believe it is important to understand that the
earth s climate does naturally go through cycles look at our geological history of ice ages and
hothouses but also recognize that human activity has greatly advanced the rate at which our planet is
warming.
The planet naturally goes through periods of extreme cooling and heating. That s why we have had
multiple periods of ice age (when polar ice grows far beyond its normal range) and the opposite,
hothouse periods (when all the polar ice melts). Currently, we are in an interglacial period (when it s
not too hot nor too cold). Interglacial periods are best for human life because our bodies have not
evolved to withstand radical high or low temperatures.
Ever since man began to shift from a nomadic hunter gatherer society to an agrarian society, we have
been gradually using more and more of the earth s natural resources with little thought of the
consequences. Britain began its age of exploration because they sought more land to provide them
with more natural resources as they had exhausted most of what they previously had. When Britain
colonized territory here in North America, they once again had an unlimited supply of huge trees to
make large navy ships, and land to grow crops such as tobacco. This began rapid deforestation that
still has not stopped. As the

Alliance systems were one of the principal causes of WWI. The main reason that this was a world war

out of all corporations. But even the largest and the most successful companies have its flaws. After
all, how do organizations learn if mistakes do not occur? It is obvious when walking into a Walmart
store, regardless of the location, there seems to be a few concerning issues that involve both the
employees and the customers. Walmart leadership seem be lacking communication as they choose not
to hear the screaming cries of their very own employees. Because of Walmart s efforts to save money
by paying low salaries and under staffing their super stores it has led to poor employee satisfaction,
not to mention the unfavorable ratings are trickling down to its customers. This paper

Gangster Genre In The Film Goodfellas By Martin Scorsese
The America gangster genre were life lessons that faced social issues and revealed the reality of
materialism. The typological characteristics in the gangster films were stories being told from a
criminal s point of view. Most gangster protagonists in the films are born outsider, immigrants, or
other groups who continues to be treated as outsiders. The gangster genre illustrates immigrants and
nativists who had different perspectives about what is the American Dream . The history of the
gangster genre is difficult to define, because there are several overlaps with gangster genre among
other film genre styles. The confirmation of what is a true gangster film involves the gangster
protagonist telling their story.

An African American gangster film, known as a gangsta film is about a heroin dealer name Frank
Lucas. Lucas organized crime in Harlem during the late 1960 s and early 1970 s. His tactics were
cutting out the middlemen in the drug trade and buying heroin directly from his source in Southeast
Asia. Then he proceeded to smuggle the heroin from Vietnam to the U.S. by using the coffins of dead
American servicemen (Frank, web). Another film called, Boardwalk Empire who added a political
dimension, continuing the gangster genre s focus on the fragility of the American Dream by the links
it made noticeable among family, crime, and national and local politics (Friedman, 422).
The American Dream is an illusion and the gangster genre showed those illusions in an entertainment
point of view. The gangster protagonists all were searching for a better life. Their perceptions of the
American Dream were someone being on top with money and power. Most of the protagonists were
immigrants who wanted to be a part of society that held barriers against them. The gangster genre
films allow the audience to see that Americans tend to lose their grip on reality as they pursue their
desires for success. Every gangster film s protagonist has their own perspective about the American

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Summary Chapter 12
During the fourth chapter of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the journey towards the Green Chapel
commences. Sir Gawain is escorted by a member of the Red Manor, who gives the knight a heed of
warning. The escort offers advice to not travel to the Green Chapel, and if he chose this path, the
escort would not tell of his fleeing. Sir Gawain thanks the escort for his warning but tells him that he
has to keep his word, otherwise he would become a coward. The chapel was almost missed, if it not
for Sir Gawain noticing a rounded hillock on the bank of a stream, near the bed of a torrent that
tumbled there (Sir Gawain 2172 73). Sir Gawain entered the mound, which was the entrance to the
chapel. Here, he met up with the Green Knight. This is where he reached the end of his quest and was
destined to receive his blow to the neck. Sir Gawain moved away from the first attempt, which caused
the Knight to suspect that he was not the true knight of the quest. After a dialogue was exchanged
between the two, the Green Knight struck a blow to Sir Gawain, which only nicked his neck. The
Green Knight told him that his wife was Morgan, whom Gawain spent time with in the Manor, and
she was sent to test Gawain. The Green Knight called Sir Gawain one of the most perfect men who
ever walked on the earth (Sir Gawain 2363). Sir Gawain replied in anger, saying that he was not a
virtuous knight, therefore he doesn t deserve such a remark. Sir Gawain was sent back to Arthur s

The Pros And Cons Of Factory Farming
William s paper addresses the moral risk that is posed when people decide to intentionally remain
ignorant to avoid a possible ethical crisis. She then elaborates on how this choice manifests itself in
four different types of affected ignorance. She bases her belief that factory farming is wrong using
deontology and utilitarianism because animals deserve respect as well as the ability to exist without
pain that is atypical from a natural life. Her argument is that when we chose affected ignorance, we
then become subject the possibility of moral risk if we identify that factory farming is morally wrong
and continue to support it. I agree with her argument, but believe that it could be strengthened by
developing the idea of how affected ignorance is a symptom of being weak willed.
Williams begins with the idea that we do not ask questions about what happens with factory farming
and that therefore makes us culpable for the disrespect that is administered to the animals while
harvesting the products. The choice of remaining in the dark puts the person at fault due to the fact
that animals in factory farming are also subjected to pain for the purpose of cheap meat to speed up
the process. She defines the act of staying in the dark as affected ignorance and identifies four
different ways that affected ignorance manifests itself in our lives. The first, being the refusal to
acknowledge the moral impacts imposed on the animals in the factory farming business. The second

The Waves Of New York City Essay
The Waves of New York City
Nia Scott
Away is a documentary about the surfing subculture in New York City that is shown through three
female surfers at Rockaway Beach.
The film was directed and produced by Elisa Bates. It was shown in many surf film festivals
including; New York Surf Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and Pop up Surf Film Festival.
There is something so spiritual about surfing. I have never surfed a day in my life but every time I
watch others surf I feel this yearning to pick up a board and join them. It looks like one of the most
dangerous but most fulfilling activities at the same time. I once read somewhere that humans are
attracted to water and enjoy being in water because 70% of our body is made up of water and at
molecular level, we crave water. When I watch surfers, I feel that it s true and that I m being pulled
into the waters from deep within myself. It s no surprise the sound of waves calms most people and
helps them to relax. We associate the sounds of the ocean with calmness so surfers are just people in
search of the ultimate mediation. Don t get me wrong, surfing is not as simple as picking up a board
and going into the ocean. It takes a lot of hard work to be able to surf and the bigger the waves, the
harder it is to surf. Surfers have to have great upper body strength, an ... Show more content on

How I As A Director Will Approach Directing Chekhov Chekhov is still associated with the past, but not a specifically Russian or historic past... the world evoked in a Chekhov play by inventive modern directors confronts the past with the present... (Laurence Senelick, Director s Chekhov, in A Cambridge Companion to Chekhov, p189.) Discuss the above quote with reference to your experiences of preparing to direct/design a Chekhov play. 20949723 2,150 Within this essay I will look at how I as a director will approach directing Chekhov, commenting on how I went about choosing the sections of the script I wish to use, why I chose these sections and how. I will then reference Katie Mitchell s twelve golden rules on working with actors to demonstrate how I will approach my rehearsals and working with the actors. I will then go on to mention how and where the piece will be performed, continuing on to how I will use there lighting, sound and setting finishing with costume. The sections chosen are about illness, whether it be mental or physical. Throughout the piece the audience/readers are constantly reminded that someone is ill, whether it is Anna or Ivanov. This doesn t necessarily mean this is what Chekhov wants us to interpret from the performance as there are many interpretations: for example, the play could be interpreted as being about hypocrisy, as most characters reinforce this with the words they speak to each other. Another interpretation may be the loss of vitality on Ivanov s part; his deploring the loss of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Consequently, this idea instilled itself in me from an early age, the idea that no matter sex, age, religious disparities, race, nationality, socioeconomic standings, or physical differences people were inherently all equals. • 15. Humanism In Thomas More s Utopia By Thomas More Thomas More writes Utopia, the comedic, fictional travel log about a no place society to discuss the various religious, political, and social ideals influenced by humanism. A medieval classically trained humanist, Thomas More is also influenced by the late medieval social, political, and religious movements developing from the Plague and the Hundred Years War. In Utopia, More illustrates a humanist society by discussing agriculture in the economy, religion and happiness, and the structure of the government which was ultimately influenced by the late medieval ideals. Thomas More elaborates on economy in his book Utopia comparing it to the economy in Europe. The economy of Utopia is based on agriculture. Although agriculture is not a luxurious job, everyone has to do it because it is a shared experience. One will not complete this task for more than two years because everyone rotates in and out of the job. This is an example of humanism as the society recognizes that individuals need relief. Human beings are not to be exploited, it is a joint effort as seen through the idea of civic humanism; commoners are social utilities. In comparison to Utopia, the land in England was owned by the lords. The farmers worked for the lords who eventually profited from the land. Agricultural was a job for the poor, watched over by the wealthy. In Utopia, each city had its own land, owned by the cities who then profit from the land. At first Anne claims she didn t attribute this sickness to witchcraft in anyway. • 26. Analysis Of Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose Extended Analysis Twelve Angry Men Justice is a concept that is crucial to a fair and just society. For hundreds of years, countries have developed constitutions and other documents in place to form justice for those within the country. In Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, the idea of justice is bounced around by twelve men on a jury. These men have the unthinkable decisions of whether a suspected murderer is given the death penalty or able to walk free. The jury in Twelve Angry Men made the most just decision they could. To understand how the decision they made was just and to explain some background, this essay will cover a few major ideas. It will talk about how Reginald Rose included the ideas of: reasonable doubt, being innocent until proven guilty, the jury system, and public defenders. Twelve Angry Men touches on one of the key principles of the American criminal justice system. This is the belief of the defendant being innocent until proven guilty. The idea is to give every person a fair trial that follows the rules set forth in the constitution. In Twelve Angry Men, a young man is on trial for the murder of his father. Many of the jurors jump to conclusions about the defendant s guilt because of his lack of wealth and his ethnicity. Several of jurors make comments similar to these people and kids like this are always up to no good (Rose 24). I felt as though this setting would be more interesting to sit and observe versus a civil case where you have two people trying to settle a dispute. Its interesting to see how actual attorneys and judges act in a courtroom instead of what is portrayed on TV. My local courthouse which is in a police station holds preliminary hearings. A preliminary hearing is where the judge decides if there is enough evidence that there was a crime committed and you committed a crime. If the prosecutor fails to do this, then some or all the charges filed against you can be dismissed. There was two different parts to this process that I saw during my observation. The first one is when the defendant waives their hearing. Then the second being where the defendant decides to go through with the hearing. During my observation there was about ten cases, and all but two of them followed through with the hearing. This was very surprising to me as I watched because I couldn t understand why someone wouldn t want to at least see if the prosecution had sufficient evidence against them. Augustus, the first Roman emperor, made it a policy that the soldiers were to keep busy, and therefore stay out of trouble, which meant that all of the free time that the soldiers had was utilized in the maintenance and the construction of the roads. Through the construction of the roads, the Romans became infamous for their strength and stamina, and were viewed across Europe as a deadly force to be reckoned with. `It is no easy task to confine luxury within the limits of an empire. The most remote countries of the ancient world were ransacked to supply the pomp and delicacy of Rome` (Gibbon, 75). In addition to strengthening the military, the Roman roads also had numerous economic benefits. With over 53,000 miles of paved roads spanning across Europe, the Roman Empire was much more connected, and travel was considerably easier. This led to Rome becoming the centre of trade across Europe, with exotic goods coming in from every corner of the world. Aelius Aristides, a famous orator, is quoted to have said: ` Large continents lie around the Mediterranean Sea and never ending supplies of goods flow from them to you [the Roman people]. This agreement established Crown rights over the land of New Zealand and, for the Maori, the guarantee of the protection of their interests as well as giving them the same rights as the British settlers (Ministry for Culture and Heritage, n.d.). The principles of this document have been integrated into much legislation since its creation and it has also found places within New Zealand s constitution. This essay will attempt to portray the role that the Treaty has played in the past, its current role, and its future role with regards to New Zealand s constitution. I believe it is important to understand that the earth s climate does naturally go through cycles look at our geological history of ice ages and hothouses but also recognize that human activity has greatly advanced the rate at which our planet is warming. The planet naturally goes through periods of extreme cooling and heating. That s why we have had multiple periods of ice age (when polar ice grows far beyond its normal range) and the opposite, hothouse periods (when all the polar ice melts). Currently, we are in an interglacial period (when it s not too hot nor too cold). Interglacial periods are best for human life because our bodies have not evolved to withstand radical high or low temperatures. Ever since man began to shift from a nomadic hunter gatherer society to an agrarian society, we have been gradually using more and more of the earth s natural resources with little thought of the consequences. Britain began its age of exploration because they sought more land to provide them with more natural resources as they had exhausted most of what they previously had. When Britain colonized territory here in North America, they once again had an unlimited supply of huge trees to make large navy ships, and land to grow crops such as tobacco. This began rapid deforestation that still has not stopped. As the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Pros And Cons Of Factory Farming William s paper addresses the moral risk that is posed when people decide to intentionally remain ignorant to avoid a possible ethical crisis. She then elaborates on how this choice manifests itself in four different types of affected ignorance. She bases her belief that factory farming is wrong using deontology and utilitarianism because animals deserve respect as well as the ability to exist without pain that is atypical from a natural life. Her argument is that when we chose affected ignorance, we then become subject the possibility of moral risk if we identify that factory farming is morally wrong and continue to support it. I agree with her argument, but believe that it could be strengthened by developing the idea of how affected ignorance is a symptom of being weak willed. Williams begins with the idea that we do not ask questions about what happens with factory farming and that therefore makes us culpable for the disrespect that is administered to the animals while harvesting the products. The choice of remaining in the dark puts the person at fault due to the fact that animals in factory farming are also subjected to pain for the purpose of cheap meat to speed up the process.
