Celia A Slave Book Review

History 1301
18 November 2017
The Adversity of a Southern Girl The history of slavery and how it intertwined with the politics of
slavery can be found in the story of a young slave name Celia. The historical narrative Celia, A Slave
was written in 1991 by the author Melton A. McLaurin. In the year of 1850, a Missouri farmer named
Robert Newsom buys a young female slave. She was only fourteen years old when she was purchased.
Right after the purchase of Celia, the pattern of sexual abuse from Newsom begin. This true story
gives the details of cruelty and execution of a young black female. Black female slaves were
essentially powerless in a slave society, unable to legally protect themselves from physical assaults of
either white or black males (113). McLaurin has written over twenty books. Some of his most highly
rated books include; The Knights of Labor in the South, The North Carolina State Fair, Growing up
White in the Segregated South for which he received the Lillian Smith Award and Celia, A Slave.
Author Melton McLaurin wrote this book for readers to know and understand a portion of the
American past. He explained how the sexual politics of slavery presented an exact example of the
power relationships within the larger society. In his writing, he demonstrates how ... Show more

During those times, records of slaves were rare. She was young and unable to write, meaning she
could not describe the details of experiences and feelings of her own life. Although the brief and tragic
life of Celia, a slave, cannot provide a comprehensive theory with which to evaluate the manner and
degree to which the sexual exploitation of female slaves influenced the routine operations of the
institution of slavery, it can and does clearly define the issues that must be analyzed if such theory is
to be developed

Critical Thinking Skills
Meaning Critical thinking clarifies goals, examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates
evidence, accomplishes actions, and assesses conclusions. Critical as used in the expression critical
thinking connotes the importance or centrality of the thinking to an issue, question or problem of
concern. Critical in this context does not mean disapproval or negative. There are many positive and
useful uses of critical thinking, for example formulating a workable solution to a complex personal
problem, deliberating as a group about what course of action to take, or analyzing the assumptions and
the quality of the methods used in scientifically arriving at a reasonable level of confidence about a
given hypothesis. Using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Failure to recognize the importance of correct dispositions can lead to various forms of self deception
and closed mindedness, both individually and collectively.[5] [edit] Reflective thought In reflective
problem solving and thoughtful decision making using critical thinking one considers evidence (like
investigating evidence), the context of judgment, the relevant criteria for making the judgment well,
the applicable methods or techniques for forming the judgment, and the applicable theoretical
constructs for understanding the problem and the question at hand. The deliberation characteristic of
strong critical thinking associates critical thinking with the reflective aspect of human reasoning.
Those who would seek to improve our individual and collective capacity to engage problems using
strong critical thinking skills are, therefore, recommending that we bring greater reflection and
deliberation to decision making. Critical thinking is based on self corrective concepts and principles,
not on hard and fast, or step by step, procedures.[6] [edit] Competence Critical thinking employs not
only logic (either formal or, much more often,

Freedom Of Religion In The British Colonies
The British Colonists traveled over into the New World for society to work out in their own favor.
However, this was not the case for these colonists; they carelessly came into the New World with the
intent of having their own freedom of religion, being culturally intertwined with the natives already,
and for their own overall independence economically . The British did not make a smooth
transformation into this New World when they first arrived over seas, they brought chaos not only to
the Natives but also the development of their colonies and themselves.
A plan for some of the colonists moving to the New World was freedom of religion, such as the
quakers (located in Pennsylvania) and pilgrims believed in the freedom of living off of your own
specific religion. The puritans on the other hand, settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629 ,
identified themselves as God s chosen pure angels because of their belief that they were born saved
into the world. They would also turn a blind eye to other denominations and focused on their church to
be an Angelic Catholic Church specifically. Which of course if you know anything about their home
back in Europe. That is their main denomination over in Britain and they do required everyone to
believe in. The puritans brought over their beliefs from England not trying to make it into their own.
For example in England they created various religious laws, that were put into place over from
England but now the laws transferred into

Class This Semester Has Been Good
Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was
always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me
as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We ve shared many laughs and I
ve grown as a writer and as a student. I ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled
together. But most of all, I have learned to never give up. One experience in class that I won t forget
was on a Monday morning when we watched a deer frolic through campus like it was his natural
habitat. It just really symbolizes our class and how it is based around random comedy. I can vouch that
simple things like that and cracking jokes in class makes students more at ease in the classroom. We
aren t completely dreading waking up at 7:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when we
know we that class isn t going to be hell. Even while we are having fun in class, we simultaneously
learn things through either short, non throat slitting lectures and/or interesting exercises. I say
interesting because I ve never done things in any of my English classes in high school like I ve done in
Composition 1. This is a good thing. The red barn exercise was one of my favorites. This left it up to
the imagination of the writer to take over and conjure his or her own alternate ending with the prompt
in a short amount of time. This helped me organize my thoughts better in my essays

This Boy s Life Analysis
In the memoir This Boy s Life the readers are introduced to Jack, a troubled boy who struggles
through his adolescence. Jack s boyhood was plagued with a divorce, moving, hostile environments,
and unknown identity. To create a foundation, and image for himself Jack began to create a new life,
in his mind. This concept was shown throughout the whole memoir. For example, in this quotation,
And on the boy who lived in their letters, the splendid phantom who carried all my hopes, it seemed to
me I saw, at last , my own face. (214). Imagination was Jack main source of escape from what he truly
was. Jack pictured himself as one of the elite, a football star, and 4.0 student. While in reality he was
poor and failing his classes and never got on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In our culture today we are taught to be yourself, and never lie. Which is why I surprised and intrigued
by this quote, and everything that related to it. I wanted to understand Jack s life, because I have never
experienced anything close to his life. Thus bringing me to how this quote related to the meaning as a
memoir as a whole. Imagination brought Jack into a wonderful life, yet it was fake. This allowing him
to think more highly of himself to get past Dwight s and other people s outlooks on him. However,
Jack s life never turley became better. He went to the Hill school but got expelled, and Dwight s anger
never left Jack, and clouded the little bit of happiness that Jack had gained in Chinook. All of this
shows that imagination never truly makes things better, but provides an allusion. Through Jack it was
learned that only working hard, and keeping out of trouble brings honest good fortune. Which was
expressed throughout the memoir to allow the readers to see the good and bad that came from Jack s
life. Overall, the quotation helped me understand Jack s use of imagination, and even the true meaning
of the memoir as a

Fatty Liver Disease
The risks of consuming sugar do not end with diabetes; studies have also reported sugars connection
to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Typically, liver disease is seen as a result of the over
consumption of alcohol, but sugar can also have a similar effect on the liver. As previously described,
when glucose is consumed it is dispersed throughout the body via insulin and the extra is sent to the
liver to be stored. Glucose consumed at low to moderate levels will not have an overly detrimental
effect on the liver. Fructose, however, circumvents insulin and is directed straight to the liver
(Stanhope, Sugar Consumption... ). When the fructose reaches the liver it is stored as fat cells, which
build up over time and cause a stress response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though there is truth in this statement, as aforementioned, if sugar truly is addictive as shown in some
studies, there may be a correlation between overeating and sugar. Even more concerning, in recent
years, there have been multiple discussions arising concerning the sugar industry s involvement in
skewing research conducted on the effects of sugar. These exposés found in both scholarly journals as
well as in publications like Time Magazine suggest great lengths have been made to hide the negative
impacts of sugar from the public. In the article Sugar Industry Influence on Dental Health Policy
Examined, Karen Rosenberg writes, The researchers found a consistent pattern of efforts by the sugar
industry to divert attention away from limiting sugar intake. Why would the sugar industry try to
prevent this information from spreading? Money is most likely the answer. The sugar industry is a
twenty four billion dollar industry worldwide, a market that would be greatly harmed if sugar stopped
being consumed at excessive rates (Keating, The World Sweetener... ). In recent years, the medical
world has begun to address the links to sugar and poor health. An article written to optometrist doctors
(OD) writes, Dennis Ruskin, OD, FAAO, opened with a frontal assault on the U.S. food industry and
government regulatory agencies for not including percent daily

Four Immeasurable Minds
The Four Immeasurable Minds 1. Mental Training (p. 41 46) Mental training is required of all
therapists, and this concept reaches beyond a set of techniques special to the therapy field. Mental
training also includes the practice of being mindful, and the practice of the Four Immeasurable Minds.
The certain therapy techniques learned, mindfulness, and the Four Immeasurable Minds all lead to a
presence that is necessary for a therapeutic relationship. This presence takes great training and
practice. 2. Learning to be a Therapist (p. 38) One crucial element to establishing a therapeutic
relationship is listening; listening without judgment, with acceptance, and with receptivity. A therapist
should not be judgmental, and listening should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Equanimity is not about indifference, but is about evenness. Equanimity is also about empathy, but not
losing ourselves in others emotions, and learning the correct way to react to others and their emotions.
Zen and the Buddhist Tradition 1. The Eightfold Path (p. 359) The Eightfold Path consists of eight
components that lead to the dissolution of both of dissatisfaction, as well as cravings. The Eightfold
Path leads to a way of living that is mindful, and can lead to enlightenment. The Eightfold Path can be
broken into three categories. The first category is ethical conduct, the second is mental discipline, and
the third is wisdom. Each of these aspects is essential to therapy, and none comes without practice.
Each requires great mental training. 2. Social Interactions (p. 371 372) Buddhist teachings show that
the Buddha nature is in everyone, and we have the ability to find and utilize this nature. We can
practice our Buddha nature through social interactions, where we do not judge people, yet understand
them, and offer compassion and help. Being nonjudgmental is a crucial element to our Buddha nature
and our social interactions. Offering our understanding of a person in need will help that person more
than anything

How Did The Cold War Containment
The U.S. had a foreign policy of containment during the Cold War and wished to stop the spread of
communism by the Soviets because they send economic aid to Western European countries and they
collaborate with democratic nations who are resisting subjugation. The containment policy resulted in
the joining of NATO (i.e. the end of isolationism) and the majorly successful Truman Doctrine,
Marshall Plan, and the Berlin airlift. Those policies paved the road to stop the spread of communism
to the Western European countries and Asia. (3)
The United States sent economic aid to Western European countries in order to contain communism.

very grave character. (Cold War Reader 17) This proves foreign policy was containment because they
wanted to rebuild the damaged countries economy, so they can resist communism. In order to ensure
communism did not spread and prosperity was reached, a healthy economy was needed. The Berlin
Airlift was a huge step to ending communism. The Soviets closed all ground routes into the city
because they wanted Western powers out. The United States fought back by flying over Berlin in
cargo planes to supply Berlin with necessary supplies. Flying Douglas Aircraft was one of the major
cargo planes at the time. The company created a political cartoon which

No Matter What Path God Calls A Missionary Essay
No matter what path God calls a missionary to, the initial goals are the same. These goals are: 1) Build
and edify the church, 2) Meeting needs, and 3) Spread the Gospel. The task of utmost importance is
that of building the church, a community of believers. It is through evangelizing that men come to
hear, know, and accept the redemptive plan of God through Jesus Christ. This is done by preaching
and teaching this message when opportunity arises. It is also done by living out your faith in the day to
day of mission life. We are to make the book of Acts our living example in growing and edifying a
body of believers (Warren 26 31) (Hodges 61 62)
Secondly, we are to meet the basic needs of that community and of those around us. These needs may
be physical, financial, or spiritual. Most often these needs will be physical at first and the later that
opens the door to the spiritual need. The Gospel of Christ is designed to meet all the needs of man. It
provides salvation for the soul and requires helping/loving those who are poor or destitute. One of the
first tasks for the missionary is to provide a Bible in the native tongue if one isn t available. This is the
sole mission of the parachurch group Wycliffe Translators. Other ministries to the native church will
be covered later in more depth. (Kane 297)
The last of the initial tasks for missions is spreading the Gospel. Once a strong, healthy body of
believers has been organized that is well provided for and self sufficient it

The Black American Symbol Of Courage, Tenacity, And Gallantry
Relentless Forced into submission and depravity without regard is callous and immoral. One cannot
expect an individual to remain loyal to their beliefs if they have been sabotaged and casted off as
frivolous and mediocre. Kunta Kinte, from the 1977 miniseries, Roots, proved this notion to be untrue.
Through oppression and brutality, he still held tightly to his convictions without pause or hesitation.
He refused to conform to the restrictive regulations of his superiors even though this caused immense
turmoil and distress. Kunta Kinte is the Black American symbol of courage, tenacity, and gallantry
because he depicted strength, regardless of the adversities that plighted him. In the spring of 1750,
Allah granted life to Kunta Kinte. Kunta was the first son of Omoro and Binta Kinte. Kunta and his
relatives belonged to the Mandinka tribe, Juffure, in The Gambia. The Juffure members adhered
rigidly to the sacred text of the Quran. Kunta s childhood was full of wonder and joy. When he was a
child he aided his elders, attend to the needs of his family, and morphed into a dutiful student. He
adored his mother and patterned his behavior after his father who he respected and admired. His days
consisted of tending to goats, farming groundnuts, couscous, and cotton. A lion attacted one of his
goats and he did not run. He stayed and thrawted off the attact with nothing more than a sling shot
made out of weathered leather This shows his bravery. When he turned 15, he had to go

Petrarch s The Ascent Of Mont Ventoux
While reading Petrarch The Ascent of Mont Ventoux I noticed that it had some similarities to Dante s
Purgatory that were more hidden. The fact that they are both climbing a mountain trying to
accomplish something is one thing but it also is very deep with meaning. In Mont Ventoux Petrarch is
climbing the mountain for the view of it, while Dante is climbing it to reach Heaven, they both
religious men and in their journey they change a bit themselves. Dante is cleansing himself of sins
each time he moves up a stage in Purgatory and it s one step closer to reaching Paradiso. On the other
hand Petrarch is not yet a changed man until he reaches the top. Along the way up the mountain he
tries to find a shortcut instead of the harder and longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I just don t think it s a shame to want things. I also don t exactly agree on the statement of how we
must look at our sins inside our soul without the grace of God. I agree we need God s grace for the
right to Heaven but I don t agree that we have to get rid of our worldly desires in order for us to reach
Heaven. I understand the Petrarch was a Christian but he obviously had a more influence for having
Catholic views and thoughts. Going back to the question Professor Hepola examined, is he right, the
soul is the greatest thing and not just on my sins, but me? I say the greatest thing is faith and the grace
of God, not the soul. Without God we wouldn t be here with a soul or even having sin because God
created Adam and Eve. Without His grace we cannot become what we need to be, our essence and our
telos is to be holy for Him. Just like Dante did when we was climbing to the top of Purgatory, he had
to be cleansed of his sins and when he reached the top he was a man that was devoted to worshipping
God and was sin free. Yes, the soul has to be purified and washed before entering Heaven but it is not

Legalization Of Polygamy In The United States
In today s developing world it is common for people to desire and be affectionate with more than one
spouse. It seems difficult for one person, man or woman to commit to being with one spouse,
therefore the divorce rates are increasing every day. The question remains whether this act should be
legalized or not.
Polygamy is having more than one spouse. There are different types of polygamy; these include
polygamy where a man has multiple wives, polyandry in which a woman has multiple husbands, and
group marriage where a family consists of multiple husbands and wives. Polygamy is definitely the
most popular of the three listed. In the United States the practice of any form of polygamy is illegal
and due to this law, many adherents of the lifestyle stays hidden. My perspective of polygamy is that
having more than one spouse should remain illegal because marriage means committing to one person
alone.
Having more than one spouse can cause many issues for the family. Financial issues, lack of attention
and affection to the other wives, one of the wives may feel like the husband is giving more attention ...

Polygamy brings many problems in a family life, but some people support it because it doesn t

in the United States is a great way to save families from suffering. Polygamy doesn t only give a bad
effect for the wives but for the children s psychology. Polygamy can also encourage the idea that
women are considered objects that men can own. Eventually, this can lead to abuse and other issues
that no one should ever have to deal with. These relationships will cause hatred, jealousy, depressed,
and an emotional burden among the family members. Therefore, polygamous marriage is not a right

The Role Of Ethics In The Great Gatsby
Ethics and Morals
Morals are the principles on which one s judgments of right and wrong are based. Ethics are principles
of right conduct. These two words are closely related. I think morals and ethics should be followed. In
the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald characters display immoral actions. The
characters simply aren t bothered by some of their bad choices with work ethics, marriage, and
common sense. In the book, good work ethics are poorly disregarded. Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he s a
gambler. (Fitzgerald 73) Gatsby tells Nick this at lunch and explains how Wolfsheim is responsible for
the fixing of the 1919 world series. He gambled knowing the outcome would be in his favor, and he
got a lot of money off of cheating. Wolfsheim s act clearly shows how much he cares about work
ethics. Tom brings up the fact that Gatsby was a bootlegger and he infers that s where all his money
came from. I found out what your drug stores were. He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side

The Wilderness And Environment In Ancient Epics
The significance of the wilderness and environment in the three ancient texts, the Ramayana, the Epic
of Gilgamesh and the Odyssey is indisputable. It goes beyond just being the backdrop for the action in
the epics and instead, influences the action in some way. For this very reason, the environment
becomes as important as the central characters in the epics. The Ramayana s Cedar forest was a den of
mystical creatures, sages and demons that created challenges for the hero. It occasionally altered the
character s behaviors and tested their will to follow their dharma, which is an individual s duty
fulfilled by observance of custom or law ( dharma ). In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the wilderness serves
as a frightening force for the hero to tame and civilize, resulting in it being one of the themes carried
out through the narrative. The sea in the Odyssey hurled obstacles at the hero and his men that they
had to fight through on their journey back home and was representative of the Ancient Greeks way of
living under the influence of the gods. These environments, no matter how distant in cultural context,
all have a significant effect on their respective characters and story lines.
Pancavati, which is the forest in the Ramayana, is the place where Rama, the prince of Ayodya,
withdraws to after being exiled from his kingdom.. Throughout the epic, the forest is often viewed as
an antithesis of the kingdom, where all tradition is has to self imposed because there is no norm to

Ariel was extremely different from all the other mermaids in Atlantis, not to mention she was the
princess. She was an exceedingly curious mermaid, especially anything dealing with humans or land.
She was always off exploring and loved spending her spare time collecting and observing human
objects that she had found. However, all of these activities and actions were not normal for a mermaid,
especially not King Triton s daughter. Even with all these struggles and criticism, she manages to fight
above the mermaids and her father s sea level, literally, to achieve her hope and dreams she had been
longing for. She inspires others to never conform to society s norms and to always follow your
dreams, no matter the consequences or struggles. This is a valuable lesson to be aware of and to
follow in today s harsh society, particularly with the new rise of evil gossiping and criticism. Ariel is
also pictured as a real life hero when she risks her own safety and life to save Prince Eric, a stranger
she merely just meet and gawked over, from a shipwreck. Not only did she risk her life and safety, but
she also knew that her father would not approve of this and be awfully angry. Unlike general
mermaids, Ariel was brave and caring, so she was willing to risk her life and safety for a stranger, and
a human, their enemy at that. This inspires others to always be kind and to help those in need, no
matter the circumstances, because you never know when you may be in their footsteps. For example,
in the end of this motion picture, Eric returns the favor by risking his life to save Ariel from the evil
and now ginormous Ursula. This is an example of how good things come in return to those who
remain caring and help others. Overall, Ariel is an inspiring character to follow or swim in her tail

Mongol Influence On Russia
The unification of the Mongol tribes by Chinggis Khan resulted in a powerful army and a series of

such as Eastern Asia and Russia. For example, as a result of the Mongols revitalizing long distance
trade networks such as the Silk Road, both China and Russia experienced the exchange of cultures,
technologies, and diseases. However, Mongol influence on China quickly diminished after the
collapse of the Mongol Empire whereas the influence of Mongol expansion on Russia was more
consequential and far reaching albeit inadvertently. The Mongol Empire ... Show more content on

After Mongol rule over China ended in 1368 CE by rebel forces, the renewal of Confucian values and
a patriarchal social structure in the following Ming Dynasty signifies the refusal by the native Chinese
to assimilate Mongol practices into their native culture. This adamant refusal can be attributed to
discrimination against the Chinese in Mongol law and conflicting ideologies concerning the role of
women and the social status of merchants and artisans. On the other hand, the impact of Mongol
expansion to Russia continued to be influential even after the collapse of the Mongol Empire.
Linguistically, амбар in Russian and амбаар in Mongolian both translate to barn. Overall, there are
thousands of borrowed words, phrases, and other characteristics from the Mongol and Turkic language
that are featured in the Russian language because of interactions between the two during the Mongol
Empire. Moreover, the Golden Horde s occupation of Eastern Europe inadvertently resulted in the
unification and strengthening of Russia. Prior to Mongol rule, Russia was divided into city states ruled
by various independent princes. A weak economy and the lack of a strong centralized power made it
easy for the Mongols to conquer Russia. However, under Mongol rule, princes attained wealth through
siphoning off taxes as tribute collectors and learned to centralize their power from the Mongols while
the Orthodox Church was able to flourish and rise as a unifying force through tax exemptions. The
Russian state found strength in a common religion and in an allegiance towards a grand prince later
called the Tsar; overthrowing the Mongols. The reason between these differences in China and Russia
is due to different methods of administration. China was mostly governed by foreign officials, only
Mongols were allowed to hold high posts, and the Chinese held little

Summary Of Edgar Allan Poe s Poem The Raven
On January 1809, Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston. His father left very early in his life and his
mother died when he was 3. Poe was taken in as a foster child by Frances and John Allan. Despite the
fact that Poe academically excelled he could not pay his college loans and started gambling. John
Allan refused to pay his gambling debts and was forced to leave. After that, his relationship with John
Allan quickly fell apart.
In 1827 Poe moved to Boston and joined the army. Poe wrote many poems while he was enlisted, but
none of them became popular. He was admitted to the US Military Academy, but was forced to leave
for lack of financial support, so he moved in with his Aunt and younger cousin. In 1836 Poe married

In line 8 it says if hope has flown away which is personification because hope cannot fly. This relates
to the theme because she losing someone hope has usually gone away. The next device Poe uses is
symbolism. In lines 20 21 it says Them with a tighter clasp? Oh them I cannot save! which symbolizes
people dying in the narrator s life, and not being able to save them no matter how hard you try. The
correlates to the theme because the theme is about losing people and and your grief won t go away,
and the narrator is grieving about not being able to save them . The last piece of figurative language is
hyperbole. In lines 10 11 it reads All that we see or seem is all a dream within a dream which means
life feels like a dream, but is a hyperbole because life is not a dream and it is an exaggeration. This
supports the theme because the author has clearly lost someone making life feel like a dream, and his
grief is not going

A Survey Of The New Testament
A Survey of the New Testament The New Testament is defined as part of the Bible concerned with the
life and teachings of Christ and his earliest followers (American Century Dictionary 387). The Son of
God comes to Earth to save us from our sins and to teach us a new way of serving the Lord. Animal
sacrifice is done away with because Jesus died for our sins as a perfect sacrifice and his sacrifice is
everlasting. Jesus explained, for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but
that the world through him might be saved (John 3.17). This collection consists of twenty seven
books, in which I will break down into five sections. First are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
and John, the book of Acts, which is commonly classified as a book of history. Next are the epistles of
Paul which are the book of Romans through Philemon, the general epistles of Hebrews through Jude,
and the prophecy book of Revelation. 1. The Gospels The book of Matthew provides a detailed
account of the life of Jesus and establishes that Jesus Christ is the Messiah who fulfills the Old
Testament prophesies (Wiersbe 627). The author Matthew is primarily aiming his writings at the Jews
to let them know that he is the savior who is referred to several times in the Old Testament (Isiah 7:14,
53:5, 53:12). This book is also the longest of the four gospels having twenty eight chapters. Mark is
the shortest of the four gospels having 16 chapters, but is equally important as the

Stop And Frisk Report
Introduction In the 1990s, the growth of violent crime reached its all time high in New York City. In
response to the number of high murder rates in the 1990s, the New York City Police Department
realized that whatever they are doing to reduce violent crime was not working. The local news
reported that New Yorkers were afraid to wear their jewelry in public. Some reported they had to
sprint to the subway exit to avoid victimization when the door opened. The New York City Police
Department decided to implement a practice of Stop, Question, and Frisk. This practice became to
known as Stop and Frisk (Bellin, 2014). Stop and Frisk was a method in which an officer stops a
pedestrian and asked them a question, and then frisks them for any weapon ... Show more content on

First, the reduction of violent crime has not provided correlation with the number of stops made.
Secondly, one of the purposes articulated was to reduce gun use, a data from 2008 to 2011 shows 27%
increase in stop and frisks and shootings had not gone down, the number of shooting actually rose.
Third, the stop and frisk policy was just another form of crime fighting tool implemented by the
NYPD and it is difficult to isolate the effectiveness of this policy. In other words, there was no benefit
of this policy. However, it cost community policing relations with minority to diminish due to how
law enforcement treated minorities during the implementation of stop and frisk. There are specific
recommendations that can be set forth to improve the stop and frisk. The first recommendation
involved (1) improving training of NYPDs officers as to the laws governing the policy to ensure that
the officers are in accordance with the law; (2) changing the current incentives from measuring the
number of stops to considering the results of the stops; (3) considering pilot program testing to use
audio or visual recording stop and frisks; and (4) establishing an oversight monitor to ensure the
implementation of the

Perception People perceive the same situation in their own ways. We learn from the flow of
information through our five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. However, each of us
receives, organises and interprets the received sensory information in an individual way using short

organize and interpret information to form a meaningful, whole picture of the world. It is influenced
by selective exposure, selective distortion, and selective retention.¡¨ (Kotler, Brown, Adam Armstrong,
2004) Selective exposure means that brand marketers work especially hard to attract the consumer¡¦s
attention. For instance, bra stylists are working very hard on this to capture female consumers¡¦
attention to purchase their products. Triumph¡¦s bra designers have long begun to blend Western and

distortion refers to the tendency of people to adapt information to personal meanings. Brand marketers

Hypnosis Persuasive Speech
am absolutely sure you ve heard about Hypnosis. Either as being a procedure of treating wounds of
the heart and soul (past) or as an alternative remedy for a variety of physical health situations. Some
years ago hypnosis was a privilege of an elite of people who understood how to practice the secrets
and techniques of the art. They had the right information. Of course, they chose to keep the precious
info away from the masses.
As a hypnosis specialist for more than 10 years now, I feel I am able to write a little something useful,
especially for those who haven t yet dived in the magical realm of hypnosis!
So, in this article I will try to clear the field for you and tell you exactly what you will need to have to
emerge as a real hypnotist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Did you know you possessed certain psychic talents? Qualities provided to you from your creator
before you were given birth to! As you arrived on our planet however (as a new child), you forgot all
about it. This loss of memory effect was constantly enhanced as you brought up with bogus and
restrictive beliefs.
Okay! It s definitely not your fault. But it surely will be, if you do nothing at all about it now that you
know what went down. So, with hypnosis it is possible to uncover all those impressive psychic
(paranormal should you prefer) abilities of yours. Might be remedial powers or intuitive skills and so
on, you are a specialist in a certain field without being aware of it most of the times. But you can
uncover the whole real truth!
This is how hypnosis can certainly help BUT you must initially confirm to yourself that you really
possess those abilities. And you are not the only human being on the earth with those advantages! So
keep confirming and having faith and you will be led to where you wish to be (having all the right
information in your hands)...
And that s all to get started with Hypnosis!
But before I leave you I wish to provide you with one final word of

The Essence Of Place Essay
The Essence of Place If I had to sum Watauga Residential College in one word, I would come down to
the word community because that is exactly what being a part of this program feels like. When reading
the description of what Watauga will be for a prospective student, I gathered that the experience will
be like being a part of a community inside and outside of the classroom and this is achieved through
academic and living encounters. As Wataugans we spend time in academic and social environments
together, our spirit of learning is shown through the times we spend together academically and
socially. And by socially I mean we have lunch together, and when there are opportunities we
volunteer together and take recreational trips when possible and through all of that our faculty is
involved with us as well. Yes, my fellow classmates I do engage ourselves with one another but we
engage with the Watauga faculty as well. The Watauga Residential College is known to be located in a
residence hall called the Living Learning Center also known as the LLC, this is where we make our
homes for the first few years of college and also where the faculty members offices can be found. In
the LLC our small seminar classes take place in the residence hall; our luncheons take place here, and
many other social activities happen here as well. The Wataugans that have passed their first years also
are here and the ones who don t live in the LLC always come back to visit. The LLC is what enthralls

Berlin In The Twentieth Century Chapter Summary
In his book Berlin in the Twentieth Century: A Cultural Topography, Andrew J. Webber uses popular
texts, films and speeches to illustrate what life was like and how the city of Berlin became a
powerhouse in the 1900 s. Using these texts from many artists, most notably Walter Benjamin, Webber
is able to highlight the differences between Berlin and other important European cities, like Paris, to
show how it is influential in comparison during this period. Much of what I learned was not through
Webber s writings himself, but the works that he uses in his piece as sources. Through these quotes
and anecdotes Webber uses, I feel like I gained a sense of understanding of what life as a Berliner was
like during the pre war, war, and post war eras. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of that, I particularly enjoyed the chapter Berlin Alexanderplatz: alterations and
reconstructions. I felt like I learned more about an important location in the city in this chapter than
the life and opinions of the artists that Webber sources. Since I got the most out of it, I am going to
explore this chapter deeply. Webber opens chapter four by discussing the current state of the public
square. Alexanderplatz has gone through many changes. Originally a cattle market, it was used as a
battleground in World War One (Webber 188). It was divided into East Germany, where it was
remodeled to fit the socialist regime before it was used for the largest protest in East Germany on 4
November 1989. Now, the ever changing square has returned to a marketplace (Webber

Paradoxes of Power in Sociological Insight by Randall Collins
Paradoxes of Power in Sociological Insight by Randall Collins It may be said that the institution of
power has always been a prevalent force in our society. It is a large part of what holds society
together; without it civilized society as we know it would not exist. The functions of power range
from keeping crime at bay to the more commonplace aspects such as allowing patrons to be served in
a restaurant. The notion of power is almost invisible until further analyzed; it is something that we
perceive as being simple and therefore take for granted. Yet there are so many intricacies in regard to
power that still remain to be seen. In Chapter Three of Sociological Insight by Randall Collins, the
author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet some forms of power are certainly more effective than others. The key to realizing power most
effectively lies in the acknowledgement of occasional concession and knowing when to giv(e) in on
something less important (74). For instance, once again consider the example of a mother and child.
Assume that the child wants to go over to a friend s house to play, but he has promised his mother that
he would do his chores that afternoon. The child begs his mother to let him go and play, assuring her
that he will do his chores immediately upon arriving home. The mother concedes, and the child is
happy. If we are to analyze this situation in terms of gains and losses, the mother has gained points
with her son and has essentially suffered no loss the chores will still be done, only a few hours later.
Throughout the entire scenario, the mother s power is evident, both explicit and implicitly; the son
does not forget that his mother has the ultimate say in what he does, and in letting her son go she has
not only made him happy but is also asserting her power as a parent. In sum, the mother has most
effectively realized her power by knowing when to sacrifice something that is of lesser importance
while gaining more long term benefits. Another way that power may be asserted is by the influences
of certain situations, namely

Aseptic Technique And Culturing Bacteria
MATERIAL and METHODS:
Aseptic Technique and Culturing Microbes(1) experiment was followed as stated in the lab manual
from Clinical Microbiology Class C 453. Aseptic technique was initiated at the beginning of each
experiment. Starting by cleansing the work surface with disinfected wipes to prevent cross
contamination each time. Utilizing the gloves and personal protective equipment assisted in
maintaining a pure culture during the series of experiments. The first step, was to grow the yeast and
bacteria cultures. The materials used for the Aseptic Technique Experiment(1) were: test tube rack, 5
mL nutrient broth tubes, pipettes, a lit tea light, Fleischmen s rapid yeast pack, E. Coli tablet and the S.
epidermidis tablet. Started by activating the yeast, by placing the content of Fleischmen s yeast bag in
a disposable cup. Then added approximately 60 mL of warm tap water into the disposable cup. To
assist in mixing the two items, I carefully swirled the cup. Once the mixture was combined, it then
was left alone for around 10 minutes or until it was frothy. Each nutrient broth tube was labeled with
the correct name of the microorganism that was cultured in that tube and dated. The S. epidermidis
was selected first, to be cultured. Taking one of the 5mL nutrient broth tube in one hand, the pipette in

Comparison 60 Minutes Analysis
This stark contrast of Thomasson s interview on 60 Minutes is apparent when you compare both of
them. Two individuals had such different outlooks on the same idea and also voiced it on the same
media channel. What made this interaction so critical was the mystery and vagueness surrounding this
hot button issue. It allowed for a stage of colliding ideas that aren t always valid but it allowed for
competing views to obtain exposure. Since being seen is not the same thing as being known which can
create gaps or voids within their image.
LGBTQ activists created a way to counteract the negative media circling them during this time period
from conservative group. They created Logo, a U.S. network that launched in 2005 which was
broadcasted on MTV. This was an explicitly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender channel, has been
implementing a rebranding strategy that it labels gaystreaming . Logo s rebranding, gaystreaming is
strikingly devoid of negative connotations to promote a greater positive image of LGBTQ individuals
in America. It currently encapsulates a range of related, but distinct meanings to do with going beyond
what gay content traditionally connotes in terms of people or characters, storylines, and entire genres

  • 2. Celia A Slave Book Review Derry 1 Courtney D. Derry Renee Celeste History 1301 18 November 2017 The Adversity of a Southern Girl The history of slavery and how it intertwined with the politics of slavery can be found in the story of a young slave name Celia. The historical narrative Celia, A Slave was written in 1991 by the author Melton A. McLaurin. In the year of 1850, a Missouri farmer named Robert Newsom buys a young female slave. She was only fourteen years old when she was purchased. Right after the purchase of Celia, the pattern of sexual abuse from Newsom begin. This true story gives the details of cruelty and execution of a young black female. Black female slaves were essentially powerless in a slave society, unable to legally protect themselves from physical assaults of either white or black males (113). McLaurin has written over twenty books. Some of his most highly rated books include; The Knights of Labor in the South, The North Carolina State Fair, Growing up White in the Segregated South for which he received the Lillian Smith Award and Celia, A Slave. Author Melton McLaurin wrote this book for readers to know and understand a portion of the American past. He explained how the sexual politics of slavery presented an exact example of the power relationships within the larger society. In his writing, he demonstrates how ... She was young and unable to write, meaning she could not describe the details of experiences and feelings of her own life. Although the brief and tragic life of Celia, a slave, cannot provide a comprehensive theory with which to evaluate the manner and degree to which the sexual exploitation of female slaves influenced the routine operations of the institution of slavery, it can and does clearly define the issues that must be analyzed if such theory is to be developed ... • 3. Critical Thinking Skills Meaning Critical thinking clarifies goals, examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates evidence, accomplishes actions, and assesses conclusions. Critical as used in the expression critical thinking connotes the importance or centrality of the thinking to an issue, question or problem of concern. Critical in this context does not mean disapproval or negative. There are many positive and useful uses of critical thinking, for example formulating a workable solution to a complex personal problem, deliberating as a group about what course of action to take, or analyzing the assumptions and the quality of the methods used in scientifically arriving at a reasonable level of confidence about a given hypothesis. Using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Failure to recognize the importance of correct dispositions can lead to various forms of self deception and closed mindedness, both individually and collectively.[5] [edit] Reflective thought In reflective problem solving and thoughtful decision making using critical thinking one considers evidence (like investigating evidence), the context of judgment, the relevant criteria for making the judgment well, the applicable methods or techniques for forming the judgment, and the applicable theoretical constructs for understanding the problem and the question at hand. The deliberation characteristic of strong critical thinking associates critical thinking with the reflective aspect of human reasoning. Those who would seek to improve our individual and collective capacity to engage problems using strong critical thinking skills are, therefore, recommending that we bring greater reflection and deliberation to decision making. Critical thinking is based on self corrective concepts and principles, not on hard and fast, or step by step, procedures.[6] [edit] Competence Critical thinking employs not only logic (either formal or, much more often, ... • 4. Freedom Of Religion In The British Colonies The British Colonists traveled over into the New World for society to work out in their own favor. However, this was not the case for these colonists; they carelessly came into the New World with the intent of having their own freedom of religion, being culturally intertwined with the natives already, and for their own overall independence economically . The British did not make a smooth transformation into this New World when they first arrived over seas, they brought chaos not only to the Natives but also the development of their colonies and themselves. A plan for some of the colonists moving to the New World was freedom of religion, such as the quakers (located in Pennsylvania) and pilgrims believed in the freedom of living off of your own specific religion. The puritans on the other hand, settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629 , identified themselves as God s chosen pure angels because of their belief that they were born saved into the world. They would also turn a blind eye to other denominations and focused on their church to be an Angelic Catholic Church specifically. Which of course if you know anything about their home back in Europe. That is their main denomination over in Britain and they do required everyone to believe in. The puritans brought over their beliefs from England not trying to make it into their own. For example in England they created various religious laws, that were put into place over from England but now the laws transferred into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Class This Semester Has Been Good Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We ve shared many laughs and I ve grown as a writer and as a student. I ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled together. But most of all, I have learned to never give up. One experience in class that I won t forget was on a Monday morning when we watched a deer frolic through campus like it was his natural habitat. It just really symbolizes our class and how it is based around random comedy. I can vouch that simple things like that and cracking jokes in class makes students more at ease in the classroom. We aren t completely dreading waking up at 7:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when we know we that class isn t going to be hell. Even while we are having fun in class, we simultaneously learn things through either short, non throat slitting lectures and/or interesting exercises. I say interesting because I ve never done things in any of my English classes in high school like I ve done in Composition 1. This is a good thing. The red barn exercise was one of my favorites. This left it up to the imagination of the writer to take over and conjure his or her own alternate ending with the prompt in a short amount of time. This helped me organize my thoughts better in my essays ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. This Boy s Life Analysis In the memoir This Boy s Life the readers are introduced to Jack, a troubled boy who struggles through his adolescence. Jack s boyhood was plagued with a divorce, moving, hostile environments, and unknown identity. To create a foundation, and image for himself Jack began to create a new life, in his mind. This concept was shown throughout the whole memoir. For example, in this quotation, And on the boy who lived in their letters, the splendid phantom who carried all my hopes, it seemed to me I saw, at last , my own face. (214). Imagination was Jack main source of escape from what he truly was. Jack pictured himself as one of the elite, a football star, and 4.0 student. While in reality he was poor and failing his classes and never got on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In our culture today we are taught to be yourself, and never lie. Which is why I surprised and intrigued by this quote, and everything that related to it. I wanted to understand Jack s life, because I have never experienced anything close to his life. Thus bringing me to how this quote related to the meaning as a memoir as a whole. Imagination brought Jack into a wonderful life, yet it was fake. This allowing him to think more highly of himself to get past Dwight s and other people s outlooks on him. However, Jack s life never turley became better. He went to the Hill school but got expelled, and Dwight s anger never left Jack, and clouded the little bit of happiness that Jack had gained in Chinook. All of this shows that imagination never truly makes things better, but provides an allusion. Through Jack it was learned that only working hard, and keeping out of trouble brings honest good fortune. Which was expressed throughout the memoir to allow the readers to see the good and bad that came from Jack s life. Overall, the quotation helped me understand Jack s use of imagination, and even the true meaning of the memoir as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Fatty Liver Disease The risks of consuming sugar do not end with diabetes; studies have also reported sugars connection to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Typically, liver disease is seen as a result of the over consumption of alcohol, but sugar can also have a similar effect on the liver. As previously described, when glucose is consumed it is dispersed throughout the body via insulin and the extra is sent to the liver to be stored. Glucose consumed at low to moderate levels will not have an overly detrimental effect on the liver. Fructose, however, circumvents insulin and is directed straight to the liver (Stanhope, Sugar Consumption... ). When the fructose reaches the liver it is stored as fat cells, which build up over time and cause a stress response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though there is truth in this statement, as aforementioned, if sugar truly is addictive as shown in some studies, there may be a correlation between overeating and sugar. Even more concerning, in recent years, there have been multiple discussions arising concerning the sugar industry s involvement in skewing research conducted on the effects of sugar. These exposés found in both scholarly journals as well as in publications like Time Magazine suggest great lengths have been made to hide the negative impacts of sugar from the public. In the article Sugar Industry Influence on Dental Health Policy Examined, Karen Rosenberg writes, The researchers found a consistent pattern of efforts by the sugar industry to divert attention away from limiting sugar intake. Why would the sugar industry try to prevent this information from spreading? Money is most likely the answer. The sugar industry is a twenty four billion dollar industry worldwide, a market that would be greatly harmed if sugar stopped being consumed at excessive rates (Keating, The World Sweetener... ). In recent years, the medical world has begun to address the links to sugar and poor health. The Eightfold Path leads to a way of living that is mindful, and can lead to enlightenment. The Eightfold Path can be broken into three categories. The first category is ethical conduct, the second is mental discipline, and the third is wisdom. Each of these aspects is essential to therapy, and none comes without practice. Each requires great mental training. 2. Social Interactions (p. 371 372) Buddhist teachings show that the Buddha nature is in everyone, and we have the ability to find and utilize this nature. How Did The Cold War Containment The U.S. had a foreign policy of containment during the Cold War and wished to stop the spread of communism by the Soviets because they send economic aid to Western European countries and they collaborate with democratic nations who are resisting subjugation. The containment policy resulted in the joining of NATO (i.e. the end of isolationism) and the majorly successful Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, and the Berlin airlift. Those policies paved the road to stop the spread of communism to the Western European countries and Asia. • 13. No Matter What Path God Calls A Missionary Essay No matter what path God calls a missionary to, the initial goals are the same. These goals are: 1) Build and edify the church, 2) Meeting needs, and 3) Spread the Gospel. The task of utmost importance is that of building the church, a community of believers. It is through evangelizing that men come to hear, know, and accept the redemptive plan of God through Jesus Christ. This is done by preaching and teaching this message when opportunity arises. It is also done by living out your faith in the day to day of mission life. We are to make the book of Acts our living example in growing and edifying a body of believers (Warren 26 31) (Hodges 61 62) Secondly, we are to meet the basic needs of that community and of those around us. These needs may be physical, financial, or spiritual. Most often these needs will be physical at first and the later that opens the door to the spiritual need. The Gospel of Christ is designed to meet all the needs of man. It provides salvation for the soul and requires helping/loving those who are poor or destitute. One of the first tasks for the missionary is to provide a Bible in the native tongue if one isn t available. This is the sole mission of the parachurch group Wycliffe Translators. Other ministries to the native church will be covered later in more depth. (Kane 297) The last of the initial tasks for missions is spreading the Gospel. • 14. The Black American Symbol Of Courage, Tenacity, And Gallantry Relentless Forced into submission and depravity without regard is callous and immoral. One cannot expect an individual to remain loyal to their beliefs if they have been sabotaged and casted off as frivolous and mediocre. Kunta Kinte, from the 1977 miniseries, Roots, proved this notion to be untrue. Through oppression and brutality, he still held tightly to his convictions without pause or hesitation. He refused to conform to the restrictive regulations of his superiors even though this caused immense turmoil and distress. Kunta Kinte is the Black American symbol of courage, tenacity, and gallantry because he depicted strength, regardless of the adversities that plighted him. In the spring of 1750, Allah granted life to Kunta Kinte. Kunta was the first son of Omoro and Binta Kinte. Kunta and his relatives belonged to the Mandinka tribe, Juffure, in The Gambia. The Juffure members adhered rigidly to the sacred text of the Quran. Kunta s childhood was full of wonder and joy. When he was a child he aided his elders, attend to the needs of his family, and morphed into a dutiful student. He adored his mother and patterned his behavior after his father who he respected and admired. His days consisted of tending to goats, farming groundnuts, couscous, and cotton. In Mont Ventoux Petrarch is climbing the mountain for the view of it, while Dante is climbing it to reach Heaven, they both religious men and in their journey they change a bit themselves. Dante is cleansing himself of sins each time he moves up a stage in Purgatory and it s one step closer to reaching Paradiso. I understand the Petrarch was a Christian but he obviously had a more influence for having Catholic views and thoughts. Going back to the question Professor Hepola examined, is he right, the soul is the greatest thing and not just on my sins, but me? I say the greatest thing is faith and the grace of God, not the soul. Without God we wouldn t be here with a soul or even having sin because God created Adam and Eve. Without His grace we cannot become what we need to be, our essence and our telos is to be holy for Him. Just like Dante did when we was climbing to the top of Purgatory, he had to be cleansed of his sins and when he reached the top he was a man that was devoted to worshipping God and was sin free. It seems difficult for one person, man or woman to commit to being with one spouse, therefore the divorce rates are increasing every day. The question remains whether this act should be legalized or not. Polygamy is having more than one spouse. There are different types of polygamy; these include polygamy where a man has multiple wives, polyandry in which a woman has multiple husbands, and group marriage where a family consists of multiple husbands and wives. Polygamy is definitely the most popular of the three listed. In the United States the practice of any form of polygamy is illegal and due to this law, many adherents of the lifestyle stays hidden. My perspective of polygamy is that having more than one spouse should remain illegal because marriage means committing to one person alone. • 19. The Wilderness And Environment In Ancient Epics The significance of the wilderness and environment in the three ancient texts, the Ramayana, the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Odyssey is indisputable. It goes beyond just being the backdrop for the action in the epics and instead, influences the action in some way. For this very reason, the environment becomes as important as the central characters in the epics. The Ramayana s Cedar forest was a den of mystical creatures, sages and demons that created challenges for the hero. It occasionally altered the character s behaviors and tested their will to follow their dharma, which is an individual s duty fulfilled by observance of custom or law ( dharma ). In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the wilderness serves as a frightening force for the hero to tame and civilize, resulting in it being one of the themes carried out through the narrative. The sea in the Odyssey hurled obstacles at the hero and his men that they had to fight through on their journey back home and was representative of the Ancient Greeks way of living under the influence of the gods. These environments, no matter how distant in cultural context, all have a significant effect on their respective characters and story lines. Pancavati, which is the forest in the Ramayana, is the place where Rama, the prince of Ayodya, withdraws to after being exiled from his kingdom.. She was an exceedingly curious mermaid, especially anything dealing with humans or land. She was always off exploring and loved spending her spare time collecting and observing human objects that she had found. However, all of these activities and actions were not normal for a mermaid, especially not King Triton s daughter. Even with all these struggles and criticism, she manages to fight above the mermaids and her father s sea level, literally, to achieve her hope and dreams she had been longing for. She inspires others to never conform to society s norms and to always follow your dreams, no matter the consequences or struggles. This is a valuable lesson to be aware of and to follow in today s harsh society, particularly with the new rise of evil gossiping and criticism. Ariel is also pictured as a real life hero when she risks her own safety and life to save Prince Eric, a stranger she merely just meet and gawked over, from a shipwreck. Not only did she risk her life and safety, but she also knew that her father would not approve of this and be awfully angry. Unlike general mermaids, Ariel was brave and caring, so she was willing to risk her life and safety for a stranger, and a human, their enemy at that. This inspires others to always be kind and to help those in need, no matter the circumstances, because you never know when you may be in their footsteps. For example, in the end of this motion picture, Eric returns the favor by risking his life to save Ariel from the evil and now ginormous Ursula. After Mongol rule over China ended in 1368 CE by rebel forces, the renewal of Confucian values and a patriarchal social structure in the following Ming Dynasty signifies the refusal by the native Chinese to assimilate Mongol practices into their native culture. This adamant refusal can be attributed to discrimination against the Chinese in Mongol law and conflicting ideologies concerning the role of women and the social status of merchants and artisans. On the other hand, the impact of Mongol expansion to Russia continued to be influential even after the collapse of the Mongol Empire. Linguistically, амбар in Russian and амбаар in Mongolian both translate to barn. Overall, there are thousands of borrowed words, phrases, and other characteristics from the Mongol and Turkic language that are featured in the Russian language because of interactions between the two during the Mongol Empire. Moreover, the Golden Horde s occupation of Eastern Europe inadvertently resulted in the unification and strengthening of Russia. Prior to Mongol rule, Russia was divided into city states ruled by various independent princes. A weak economy and the lack of a strong centralized power made it easy for the Mongols to conquer Russia. However, under Mongol rule, princes attained wealth through siphoning off taxes as tribute collectors and learned to centralize their power from the Mongols while the Orthodox Church was able to flourish and rise as a unifying force through tax exemptions. The Russian state found strength in a common religion and in an allegiance towards a grand prince later called the Tsar; overthrowing the Mongols. A Survey Of The New Testament A Survey of the New Testament The New Testament is defined as part of the Bible concerned with the life and teachings of Christ and his earliest followers (American Century Dictionary 387). The Son of God comes to Earth to save us from our sins and to teach us a new way of serving the Lord. Animal sacrifice is done away with because Jesus died for our sins as a perfect sacrifice and his sacrifice is everlasting. Jesus explained, for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved (John 3.17). This collection consists of twenty seven books, in which I will break down into five sections. First are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the book of Acts, which is commonly classified as a book of history. Next are the epistles of Paul which are the book of Romans through Philemon, the general epistles of Hebrews through Jude, and the prophecy book of Revelation. 1. The Gospels The book of Matthew provides a detailed account of the life of Jesus and establishes that Jesus Christ is the Messiah who fulfills the Old Testament prophesies (Wiersbe 627). The author Matthew is primarily aiming his writings at the Jews to let them know that he is the savior who is referred to several times in the Old Testament (Isiah 7:14, 53:5, 53:12). Paradoxes of Power in Sociological Insight by Randall Collins Paradoxes of Power in Sociological Insight by Randall Collins It may be said that the institution of power has always been a prevalent force in our society. It is a large part of what holds society together; without it civilized society as we know it would not exist. The functions of power range from keeping crime at bay to the more commonplace aspects such as allowing patrons to be served in a restaurant. The notion of power is almost invisible until further analyzed; it is something that we perceive as being simple and therefore take for granted. Yet there are so many intricacies in regard to power that still remain to be seen. In Chapter Three of Sociological Insight by Randall Collins, the author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet some forms of power are certainly more effective than others. The key to realizing power most effectively lies in the acknowledgement of occasional concession and knowing when to giv(e) in on something less important (74). For instance, once again consider the example of a mother and child. Assume that the child wants to go over to a friend s house to play, but he has promised his mother that he would do his chores that afternoon. The child begs his mother to let him go and play, assuring her that he will do his chores immediately upon arriving home. The mother concedes, and the child is happy. If we are to analyze this situation in terms of gains and losses, the mother has gained points with her son and has essentially suffered no loss the chores will still be done, only a few hours later. Throughout the entire scenario, the mother s power is evident, both explicit and implicitly; the son does not forget that his mother has the ultimate say in what he does, and in letting her son go she has not only made him happy but is also asserting her power as a parent. In sum, the mother has most effectively realized her power by knowing when to sacrifice something that is of lesser importance while gaining more long term benefits. Another way that power may be asserted is by the influences of certain situations, namely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Aseptic Technique And Culturing Bacteria MATERIAL and METHODS: Aseptic Technique and Culturing Microbes(1) experiment was followed as stated in the lab manual from Clinical Microbiology Class C 453. Aseptic technique was initiated at the beginning of each experiment. Starting by cleansing the work surface with disinfected wipes to prevent cross contamination each time. Utilizing the gloves and personal protective equipment assisted in maintaining a pure culture during the series of experiments. The first step, was to grow the yeast and bacteria cultures. The materials used for the Aseptic Technique Experiment(1) were: test tube rack, 5 mL nutrient broth tubes, pipettes, a lit tea light, Fleischmen s rapid yeast pack, E. Coli tablet and the S. epidermidis tablet. Started by activating the yeast, by placing the content of Fleischmen s yeast bag in a disposable cup. Then added approximately 60 mL of warm tap water into the disposable cup. To assist in mixing the two items, I carefully swirled the cup. Once the mixture was combined, it then was left alone for around 10 minutes or until it was frothy. Each nutrient broth tube was labeled with the correct name of the microorganism that was cultured in that tube and dated. The S. epidermidis was selected first, to be cultured. Taking one of the 5mL nutrient broth tube in one hand, the pipette in other hand. The cap was removed with the same hand that had the pipette. Utilizing a lit tea light, like a bunsen burner, I flamed the mouth of the nutrient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Comparison 60 Minutes Analysis This stark contrast of Thomasson s interview on 60 Minutes is apparent when you compare both of them. Two individuals had such different outlooks on the same idea and also voiced it on the same media channel. What made this interaction so critical was the mystery and vagueness surrounding this hot button issue. It allowed for a stage of colliding ideas that aren t always valid but it allowed for competing views to obtain exposure. Since being seen is not the same thing as being known which can create gaps or voids within their image. LGBTQ activists created a way to counteract the negative media circling them during this time period from conservative group. They created Logo, a U.S. network that launched in 2005 which was broadcasted on MTV. This was an explicitly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender channel, has been implementing a rebranding strategy that it labels gaystreaming . Logo s rebranding, gaystreaming is strikingly devoid of negative connotations to promote a greater positive image of LGBTQ individuals in America. It currently encapsulates a range of related, but distinct meanings to do with going beyond what gay content traditionally connotes in terms of people or characters, storylines, and entire genres of entertainment. That figure represents a 17 percent increase from 2004, when only 31 percent supported gay marriage and nearly twice as many Americans opposed it (Pew Research Center, 2012). Combined with efforts from Logo and a large combination of activists have allowed for this sweeping change within America considering it was a awkward topic 10 years before and was taboo over 20 years ...
