• 22 people-2 groups-300mg capsules of ethanolic extracts of leaves of Tulsi-

• significant increase in the levels of IFN-γ, IL-4 were observed after 4 weeks
in the Tulsi extract intervention group in contrast to the placebo group.

18. Anti-Ulceric activity of Tulsi.
To reduce the recurrence of mouth ulcers in 40 night shift workers by
daily consumption of 5tbsp of fresh yogurt, 5 leaves of Holy basil
swallowed in the morning daily for 3 weeks.
Tulsi is abundant in vitamin C, vitamin A, phytonutrients and essential
oils making it an excellent anti-oxidant against free radicals. Its anti-
bacterial properties make it an effective oral disinfectant that destroy
up to 99% of mouth commensal organisms and relieve the symptoms
of ulcer. Tulsi has anti-ulcerogenic and ulcer-healing properties.

19. • 30 ulcer rat- 5 groups of 6 animals each.
• Group I served as control in which distilled water (10 ml/kg).
• Group II, III & IV received ocimum sanctum leaf extract in doses of 50
mg/kg, 100 mg/kg & 200 mg/kg respectively. Group V was given ranitidine
(10 mg/ kg) served as standard for comparison. All the drugs are given
orally once daily for 7 days.
• Result show that the grp which were fed with 200mg of tulsi show similar
activity as that of rantidine & ulcer were reduced in that group.
• The mechanism is that tulsi act on neural pathways controlling acid
secretion thereby strengthening the physiological capabilities to decrease
stress and hence reduce ulcers.
