2. NEED FOR THE STUDY
Health is common theme in most cultures. In fact , all communities have their
concepts of health as a part of their culture. Ayurveda is the everlasting supreme
science of medicine because it deals with all aspects of life particularly of human
being since antiquity. The foremost aim of Ayurveda is to promote and maintain health
of the healthy Person 1.
In recent times, focus on plant has increased all over the world and a large body
of evidence has collected to show immense potential of medicinal plant used in
various diseases .
By looking at the Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka of the Tulasi, it has very effective
qualities in combating the signs and symptoms of Community diseases. Therefore, the
present work entitled as
“ A COMPILATIVE STUDY APPLICATIONS OF TULASI IN
COMMUNITY MEDICINE “ planned .
3. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
AIM :
To collect the detailed data of Tulasi (Ocimum sanctum Linn) .
OBJECTIVES :
The objective of present study is to Review detailes of Tulasi from all the
Samhitas, Journals and from the web .
Documentation of importance and properties of Tulasi according to
Ayurveda and Modern science .
To review the applications of Tulasi in community, as medicine.
4. INTRODUCTION
Plants are one of the most important sources of medicines . Today a large number of
drugs in use are derived from plants and are widely used by the traditional medical
practitioners for curing various diseases in their day to day practice. Among the
plants known for Medical value Tulasi the genus of Ocimum ,are very important for
their therapeutic potentials 2 .
Tulasi in sanskrit means ‘One that is incomparable or matchless’. In traditional
systems of medicine, different parts (leaves, stem, flower, root , seeds and even
whole plant) of Tulasi ( Ocimum sanctum Linn, a small herb seen throughout India)
have been recommended as Antimicrobial, Analgesic, Anticancer, Anti-diabetic,
Antifungal, Hepato-protective, Cardioprotective, Antispasmodic, Adaptogenic and
Diaphoretic actions 3 .
5. SYNONYMS
तुलसी : Leaves are regarded as sacred & a good medicine.
सुरसा : The rasa is good and useful.
ग्राम्य : Commonly plant grown in villages .
बहुमञ्जरी : Having numerous spike inflorescence .
अपेतराक्षसी : It repels evil organisms .
शुलाघ्नी : It relieves pains.
स्वादुगन्धिच्छदा : The leaves have sweet aroma.

भूतघ्नी : Derives away evil spirit.
देवदुधदुभभिः : The plant is liked by Devas or the flowers are like a trumpet.
कायस्था : Tulasi maintain the body in healthy condition .
सुरभी : Entire plant is aromatic .
पूतपत्री : The leaves are regarded as sacred .
चक्रपर्णि : The flowers are set densely in a circle.

12. 1.Fights Acne :
Holy basil helps to kill bacteria and infections, so it’s a great
remedy for acne and other skin irritations. Holy basil is believed to
skin and help to treat skin infections both internally and externally.
The primary active compound of tulasi oil is eugenol, which is widely
believed to help combat many skin disorders. Holy basil also contains
therapeutic components, including gamma-caryophyllene and methyl

Tulasi benefits appear to include the ability to control blood glucose

towards tulasi’s anti-diabetic activity.
In this trial, patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes experienced
in fasting blood sugar levels, postprandial (after a meal) blood sugar levels,
blood sugar levels as well as mean total cholesterol levels during the tulasi
treatment period. Overall, the researchers conclude that regular intake of
prevent Diabetes and in non-insulin dependent diabetes people it acts as

brain cells.

Tulasi benefits are found in the leaves, including camphene, eugenol
and cineole, which help provide relief from congestion and other symptoms
of respiratory disorders. Scientific studies have confirmed that tulasi
possesses impressive anti-asthmatic abilities and may make breathing
easier, that’s why it is a commonly recommended herb for respiratory issues
in community as a medicine )10.

Tulasi helps to regulate cortisol levels, thereby working as a natural
remedy for anxiety and emotional stress. Studies show that tulasi can also

heavy metals, which are other factors that can lead to hormone imbalance.

but its benefits include that it may also help to prevent it. Research shows that
people who regularly consume tulasi are less likely to be immunocompromised
and less susceptible to developing cancer cells. According to research
published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, tulasi and its phytochemicals
(including eugenol, rosmarinic acid, apigenin, myretenal, luteolin, β-sitosterol,
and carnosic acid), help prevent chemical-induced cancers 9 .
Tulasi benefits also appear to help protect the body from radiation
poisoning and help treat damage from radiation treatment, according to
research published in 2016 in the Journal of Cancer Research and
Therapeutics. It selectively protects the normal tissues against the destructive
effects of radiation .

for 10 days which is kept in tamra loha can be use as Anjana, which is best

Tulsi may also help prevent a range of eye issues, including cataracts.
According to Dr. S.K. Gupta of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,
administration of herbal eye drop mixture containing turmeric and tulasi
helps to counter the oxidative stress and insoluble protein formation that
cataracts .
By looking all these actions of Tulasi, it proves that it is easily
available, economical medicinal drug .can be taken regularly as
Preventive and curative aspect.
