The study aimed to determine the impact of an 8-week nutrition education program on the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and lifestyle habits of 150 orphan girls aged 10-15 in Mumbai, India. Baseline assessments found the girls' diets to be deficient in some nutrients compared to recommendations. After the program, the girls' nutrition knowledge and attitudes increased significantly, though their practices did not fully change due to relying on institution-provided meals. Overall, the study suggests nutrition education can improve orphan girls' health literacy but that organized feeding and hygienic living conditions also need to be addressed for optimal nutrition status.

This study evaluated the effects of consuming a mixture of cinnamon, clove, and bay leaf powder on blood glucose levels in 100 type 2 diabetes patients aged 30-70. The experimental group (n=33) consumed 6g per day for 6 weeks, while the control group (n=31) did not. Fasting blood sugar significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to controls. Both fasting and post-prandial blood sugars also significantly decreased within the experimental group pre- and post-intervention. Protein intake increased and fat intake decreased significantly in the experimental group as well. The study concluded the herbal mixture can help control blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients.

Their resting metabolic rate, body composition via DXA scan, and fitness via VO2 max test were measured at baseline and after weight loss. The results found that resting metabolic rate, lean mass, and fitness all decreased with weight loss. While resting metabolic rate was positively correlated with lean mass at both timepoints, the changes in each were not correlated, suggesting other factors also influence changes in resting metabolic rate with weight loss.

I synthethized this data with the data from available long term trials (Shai et al 2008, Sacks et al. 2009 and Foster et al 2010). There is no striking deleterious effect of LCD on LDL -level, at most it's modest and compensated by positive changes in HDL, TG and glucose/insulin

To evaluate the effect of a Resistance training program (BT) versus weight loss diet (DR) on body composition, insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular risk factors in obese adolescents. Methods: Thirty obese adolescents with a BMI above the 97th percentile participated in a training program and diet for 12 weeks. They were randomized into two groups: a diet group (DR, n = 16) with a caloric restriction of 500 kcal / day and Strength training group (BT, n = 14) for all major muscle groups, three sessions / week with an intensity of 50-80% (1.RM) for 3 months. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed for all of our subjects before and after the intervention program of 12 weeks. Results: Significant variations of body composition parameters were observed in both groups. The decrease of BMI, body weight, fat mass and (WC) for the group (DR) was more important than the group (BT) (p <0.01><0.05><0.05)),><0.05).><0.05) respectively). Conclusion: Strength training improves much more the sensitivity to insulin and cardiovascular risk factors than weight loss diet program. The latter is more effective for weight loss, BMI and body fat in obese adolescent boys.

This study examined differences in physical fitness and physical activity self-efficacy among 1,432 4th grade students from urban and suburban schools. It found that minority and low-socioeconomic status (SES) children scored lower than white and higher-SES peers on fitness tests and a self-efficacy scale. Among girls and boys, significant effects were seen for ethnicity and SES. Post-hoc analysis revealed minority and low-SES students scored lower on mile run, curl-ups, push-ups, BMI, and self-efficacy. The study aims to use these findings to develop school-based interventions to improve physical fitness and health among underserved minority youth.

SARCOPENIC OBESITY – A CLINICAL REVIEW
Sarcopenic obesity is a chronic condition, which is due to progressively aging populations, the increasing incidence of obesity, and lifestyle changes. The increasing prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in elderly has augmented interest in identifying the most effective treatment. This article aims at highlighting potential pathways to muscle impairment in obese individuals, the consequences that joint obesity and muscle impairment may have on health and disability, recent progress in management with attention on lifestyle management and pharmacologic therapy involved in reversing sarcopenic obesity. Recent findings: It has been suggested that a number of disorders affecting metabolism, physical capacity, and quality of life may be attributed to sarcopenic obesity. Excess dietary intake, physical inactivity, low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance and hormonal changes may lead to the development of sarcopenic obesity. Weight loss and exercise independently reverse sarcopenic obesity. Optimum protein intake appears to have beneficial effects on net muscle protein accretion in older adults. Myostatin inhibition causes favourable changes in body composition. Testosterone and growth hormone offer improvements in body composition but the benefits must be weighed against potential risks of therapy. GHRH-analog therapy is effective but further studies are needed in older adults. Summary: Lifestyle changes involving both diet-induced weight loss and regular exercise appear to be the optimal treatment for sarcopenic obesity. It is also advisable to maintain adequate protein intake. Ongoing studies will determine whether pharmacologic therapy such as myostatin inhibitors or GHRH-analogs have a role in the treatment of sarcopenic obesity.

cardiorespiratory fitness in Bengali overweight and obese children.

To evaluate the effect of a Resistance training program (BT) versus weight loss diet (DR) on body composition, insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular risk factors in obese adolescents. Methods: Thirty obese adolescents with a BMI above the 97th percentile participated in a training program and diet for 12 weeks. They were randomized into two groups: a diet group (DR, n = 16) with a caloric restriction of 500 kcal / day and Strength training group (BT, n = 14) for all major muscle groups, three sessions / week with an intensity of 50-80% (1.RM) for 3 months. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed for all of our subjects before and after the intervention program of 12 weeks. Results: Significant variations of body composition parameters were observed in both groups. The decrease of BMI, body weight, fat mass and (WC) for the group (DR) was more important than the group (BT) (p <0.01><0.05><0.05)),><0.05).><0.05) respectively). Conclusion: Strength training improves much more the sensitivity to insulin and cardiovascular risk factors than weight loss diet program. The latter is more effective for weight loss, BMI and body fat in obese adolescent boys.

intracellular water 8-12. Geriatric ageing is usually characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function,
termed as sarcopenia13. Both physical inactivity and inadequate nutritional intake are the main contributing
factors to sarcopenia and reduction in fat free mass 14-15. These changes have been associated with dramatic
functional decline, physical frailty, falls in elderly and a bad quality of geriatric life 16-18.Until now very few
studies have investigated both the effects of (a) nutritional supplementation and (b) exercises on nutritional
status, body composition and muscular function among geriatric population 19-21.

This study examined differences in physical fitness and physical activity self-efficacy among 1,432 4th grade students from urban and suburban schools. It found that minority and low-socioeconomic status (SES) children scored lower than white and higher-SES peers on fitness tests and a self-efficacy scale. Among girls and boys, significant effects were seen for ethnicity and SES. Post-hoc analysis revealed minority and low-SES students scored lower on mile run, curl-ups, push-ups, BMI, and self-efficacy. The study aims to use these findings to develop school-based interventions to improve physical fitness and health among underserved minority youth.

SARCOPENIC OBESITY – A CLINICAL REVIEW
Sarcopenic obesity is a chronic condition, which is due to progressively aging populations, the increasing incidence of obesity, and lifestyle changes. The increasing prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in elderly has augmented interest in identifying the most effective treatment. This article aims at highlighting potential pathways to muscle impairment in obese individuals, the consequences that joint obesity and muscle impairment may have on health and disability, recent progress in management with attention on lifestyle management and pharmacologic therapy involved in reversing sarcopenic obesity. Recent findings: It has been suggested that a number of disorders affecting metabolism, physical capacity, and quality of life may be attributed to sarcopenic obesity. Excess dietary intake, physical inactivity, low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance and hormonal changes may lead to the development of sarcopenic obesity. Weight loss and exercise independently reverse sarcopenic obesity. Optimum protein intake appears to have beneficial effects on net muscle protein accretion in older adults. Myostatin inhibition causes favourable changes in body composition. Testosterone and growth hormone offer improvements in body composition but the benefits must be weighed against potential risks of therapy. GHRH-analog therapy is effective but further studies are needed in older adults. Summary: Lifestyle changes involving both diet-induced weight loss and regular exercise appear to be the optimal treatment for sarcopenic obesity. It is also advisable to maintain adequate protein intake. Ongoing studies will determine whether pharmacologic therapy such as myostatin inhibitors or GHRH-analogs have a role in the treatment of sarcopenic obesity.

Nutritional status of elderly

This study evaluated the effects of adequate protein intake through dietary counseling or protein supplementation on sarcopenic older adults. 56 sarcopenic participants were provided either dietary counseling to encourage protein intake of 1.2-1.5 g/kg body weight per day or an isocaloric protein supplement containing whey protein, leucine and vitamin D. Both groups experienced increases in muscle mass and strength after 12 weeks. However, the supplement group achieved higher protein intake and saw greater improvements in walking speed for those under age 75. The study suggests protein supplementation is a convenient way for sarcopenic older adults to meet protein requirements and may provide additional benefits for physical performance in younger older groups.

designed to find the efficacy of the nutritional intervention for the
recovery of impaired carbohydrate metabolism and correlation of
weight and height with PP-Sugar and BMI after nutritional
rehabilitation.105 test and 100 control SAM children without
infection, of 1 to 5 years of age and either sex were enrolled. Test
group was given treatment of nutritional intervention therapy,
providing 2.5 to 3gm Protein and 90-100 kcal / kg body

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Collegiate athletes generally appear healthy
according to weight for height and body fat standards. Despite the fact
that there are well known connections between
athletic performance and nutrition, little is known about the diets o f
collegiate athletes. The objective o f this study was to determine the
diet quality o f 138 collegiate athletes.
Subjects and Methods: Data were collected in the laboratory and
via survey. Anthropometries were assessed using a free standing sta-
diometer and the BodPod® for body fat assessment. The Block 2005
Food Frequency Questionnaire© was used to assess diet. The Healthy
Eating Index (HEI) 2005 was used to calculate diet quality scores.
Results: The average BM1 was 23.2 + 2.3 kg/m2 and the average body
fat was 17.8 % ± 6.5. The average HEI score was 51.2 + 8.8 out o f
100 possible. Higher HEI scores were correlated with higher body fat
percentages in this sample. Diets were adequate in calcium, iron, and
vitamin C. Diets were inadequate in fiber, fruits and vegetables. The
athletes had excessive intakes o f sodium and percent fat.
Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the need for and potential
benefit o f nutrition education for collegiate athletes.

College athletes spend hours a day train
ing for their sport. While physical achieve
ments require training, more emphasis
may be needed on the diet quality of these
athletes. An athletes’ macronutrient and mi
cronutrient intake have an influence on the
athletes physical output (Bonci, 2011). Nu
tritional needs for athletes vary based on the
type of sport, hours spent training, season,
weather conditions, gender, and body mass
index. Nutritional needs also vary between
training days and competition days. Athletes
who consume a balanced diet tend to per
form better than those who have poor diet
quality (Bonci, 2011).
Depending on the sport, physical appear
ance is often important to the coach and the
athlete. Some athletes and coaches tend to
be more concerned about physical appear
ance than nutritional intake. Collegiate ath
letes may be pressured by their coaches and
strength staff to have a specific body size
because of performance expectations and
comparison with other competitors (Hoogen-
boom et al 2009). While body size can play an
important role in performance, the nutritional
status of an athlete als.
Potential mechanisms underlying the yogurt-body weight relationship
Some stimuli, including specific foods, seem to have enough particularities to make a difference even if their potential to exert an influence a priori appears to be limited. This is the case of yogurt whose consumption is low relative to the amount of daily food consumed but that has been shown to be independently related to reduced body weight and fat. Numerous factors may explain a beneficial effect of yogurt on body weight stability and metabolic fitness. Cohort studies show that the consumption of dairy including yogurt is related to a reduced intake of high fat-high sugar foods, suggesting that the benefits of dairy food may be due to a decrease in the potential negative effects of unhealthy eating. The ability of yogurt to promote a negative energy balance is also likely explained by the satiating and thermogenic effects of some of its nutrients, e.g. calcium and proteins, via mechanisms involving gut hormones. Yogurt has a matrix that can accommodate structural changes affecting energy intake independently of its nutrient content. For instance, we recently demonstrated that the increase in the whey/casein ratio in a yogurt matched for volume and energy and protein content as a control yogurt significantly decreased subsequent energy intake to a much greater extent than the energy content of the yogurt preload. The presence of bacteria in yogurt represents another factor that may explain the effects of yogurt consumption on energy balance and its components. In this regard, recent data suggest that the supplementation of some probiotics facilitates appetite control and accentuates body weight loss in the context of a weight-reducing program. Finally, our recent analyses of relevant data in the Quebec Family Study reveal that yogurt consumption may be the signature of a global healthy lifestyle and food-related personal profile. Female yogurt consumers are more physically active, report a reduced percent energy intake as fat and display a lower disinhibition score than non-yogurt consumers. Taken together, yogurt has numerous features that may globally explain the decreased proneness of yogurt consumers towards excess body fat.
Impact of Yogic Exercise on Body Fat Percentage on Middle Aged Obese People
Purpose: The Purpose of the study was to find out the effect of yogic exercises on body fat percentage of middle aged obese people.
Selection of Subjects: For the present study 20 male obese people from locality of Bilaspur were selected randomly as the subjects for the study. The age of the subjects ranged between 40-50 years.
Selection of Variables: The variables selected for the present study were yogic training (independent variable), body fat percentage (dependent variable).
Methodology: For the study pretest – post-test randomized group design, which consists of control group (10 subjects) and experimental group (10 subjects) were used. The data were collected through the pretest, before training and post-test, after six weeks of yogic exercises training.
Statistical Technique: For comparing pre and post-test means of experimental and control groups, descriptive analysis and Analysis of Co-Variance (ANCOVA) were used and the level of significance was set at 0.05 level of confidence.
Result: The result of the study showed that there was insignificant difference between pre and post-test (experimental group) of body fat percentage.

My Plate The Musical
“MyPlate! The New Food Guide Musical” is an interactive and unique intervention program performed by professional Broadway actors, university students, and children at elementary schools in underserved communities. Over the last three years, CSUN's Marilyn Magaram Center and the Fitness and Nutrition Initiative have collaborated to study the effectiveness of this program on children’s healthy eating and physical activity, with a focus on lowering childhood obesity and chronic disease. This national initiative has been implemented 95 times, reaching 9,500 participating students (and over 28,500 student viewers) and consists of a series of nutrition education classes in conjunction with physical activity in the form of rehearsals and performance of an original musical.
MyPlate! was developed by Helen Butleroff-Leahy (a registered dietitian, ex-Rockette, Broadway dancer, director, choreographer) and her co-writer for the musical portion is Roumel Reaux. MyPlate! is run by The Nutrition and Fitness Education Initiative, Inc., a not-for-profit company with 501C3 status. MyPlate! was brought to Los Angeles (LA) as a collaboration with CSUN’s Marilyn Magaram Center’s (MMC) Director (Dr. Annette Besnilian) and has been implemented in LA elementary schools to help reduce rates of childhood obesity. With this collaboration, CSUN MMC has been conducting evidence based research and implementing the program with its sustainability plan.
Through CSUN collaboration pilot data were collected with over 1500 students and results indicated that students (actors and viewers) reported significantly higher physical activity and nutrition knowledge at posttest than pretest. Not surprisingly, actors had a significantly greater change from pretest to posttest than the viewers. At one school, 236 students completed a pretest and posttest prior to the intervention (control group), and then those same students completed another posttest after the intervention (treatment group). Thus, each student was his/her own control. The treatment group showed significantly greater change from pretest to posttest than the control group. Results suggested a fun and interactive intervention can be a great tool to increase children’s nutrition and physical activity knowledge. To ensure sustainability, a "train-the-trainer" and "peer-to-peer" model has been successfully implemented, and we continue to identify school personnel and local talent to ensure this program is effective and sustainable.

Hypothyroidism in association with obesity, the most common endocrine disorder among females in urban areas. The objective is to find out the effect of yoga intervention on hypothyroidism linked with obesity among working women leading sedentary lifestyles in urban areas. Further to assess the recovery through yoga practice in addition to diet follow up treated as safe, very low cost, natural therapy. A total of 150 obese women had a history of hypothyroidism within the age group 30-50 years located in eastern parts of West Bengal were enrolled for this study from June,17 to January, 18. A qualitative study by a purposive sampling method was used applying BMI as the main parameter along with questionnaires & thyroid function tests, blood tests as secondary data. The study revealed initially that there was no such deficiency of nutrients like Iodine even though elevated TSH & normal or low T4 among the subjects. The study concluded that diet in conjunction with yoga intervention resulted in significant improvement to all subjects at no cost. Moreover, yoga intervention was the safest choice for all of them in this study and that not only for physical health but also mental wellbeing.
The Effect of Stress on Eating in Undergraduates-- Final
This study examined the correlation between stress levels and eating habits in undergraduate students. A survey was administered that included questions about typical food consumption and the Perceived Stress Scale. The study found no significant correlation between deviations from normal eating guidelines and increased stress levels, contrary to previous research. Limitations included a small, non-representative sample and potential issues with self-reported data. Nutritional intervention in orphanage girls
- 1. MRS. ANURADHA SHEKAR & JAYTI SHAH DR. BMN COLLEGE OF HOME SCIENCE, MATUNGA, MUMBAI
- 2. AIM The objective of this study was to determine the changes in knowledge, attitude and practices and lifestyle modification in orphan girls 10-15 years after receiving a nutrition education programme for 8 weeks.
- 3. OBJECTIVES 1) To understand the prevailing Knowledge, Attitude, Practices regarding nutrition and lifestyle. 2) To analyse nutritional status using 24 hr recall method. 3) To assess the nutritional status regarding anthropometric measurements of the girls. 4) To see the effect of the intervention on the nutritional status and lifestyle pattern. 5) To compare between the pre and post results after imparting nutrition education.
- 4. METHODOLOGY PURPOSIVE SAMPLING (N = 150) Girls 10-15years PRE TEST QUESTIONNAIRE WAS GIVEN TO ASSESS THEIR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE REGARDING NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE ANTHROPOMETRY (HT, WT, BMI, WAIST & HIP CIRCUMFERENCE, WAIST TO HIP RATIO NUTRIENT INTAKE (24 HR RECALL) subsample of 50 ENERGY, PROT, FAT, CHO & IRON AND CALCIUM
- 5. INTERVENTION FOR 8 WEEKS NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAMME (BALANCED DIET,FOOD PYRAMID, ANEMIA, PERSONAL HYGIENE AND PHYSICALACTIVITY) POST TEST QUESTIONNAIRES WERE GIVEN TO CHECK THEIR KAP AFTER NEP ANALYSIS OF DATA WAS DONE USING SPSS PACKAGE
- 6. Majority of the subjects were Hindus 97% . Eighty percent were Maharashtrians. They were from standard 6th to std 8th. The mean height was 155 cms, weight 46 kgs, BMI 19.2 , waist to hip ratio 0.6, waist circumference 62 cms and hip circumference 92 cms. In the age group of 10-12 years, 44 out of 74 subjects were normal (BMI=18.5 to 24.9Kg/m2) and 30 subjects were underweight (BMI<18.5Kg/m2). In the age group of 13-15 it was found that 20 subjects out of 76 were underweight (BMI<18.5Kg/m2) and 56 subjects were in the normal range. (BMI=18.5 to 24.9Kg/m2) RESULTS

The protein and fats were found to be sufficient .The overall nutritional status of the orphans was not found to be bad.

The above table shows that attitude had a negative association with proteins and carbohydrates which proves that subjects having good attitude towards nutrition consumed adequate amounts of proteins and carbohydrates. The table also reveals that practice had a negative association with fats at a significance of - .313. Thus it can be concluded that subjects showing good practice scores consumed lesser amounts of fats.
- 12. NEP was given on lifestyle modification which included topics like personal hygiene, physical activity and exercise. When interviewed about the same, the subjects gave a positive response and showed a major impact.
- 13. Summary and conclusion The study can be concluded that the nutritional status of the institutionalized orphan girls of age group of 10-15 years was not that bad when compared with different standards. Results indicated that dietary intake was deficient for some nutrients when compared to RDA for all age groups which may be linked to poor planning of menus found in the orphanage. It was also found that sometimes these children were provided with fruits, energy, and protein rich foods. This might be attributed to a great extent to better health care system prevailing in the orphanage. Nutrition education programme definitely proved to have improved their KAP. But practicing them is not in their hands as they are at the mercy of eating what is provided by the institution. This suggests that the nutritional status of the orphans, who are considered to be nutritionally at a disadvantage, can be improved through organized feeding and exposure to better hygienic condition.
