The Major Causes And Effects Of Overcrowding In Cities
Overcrowding in cities
Many countries of the world are currently experiencing problems caused by rapidly growing
populations in urban areas, and both governments and individuals have a duty to find ways to
overcome these problems. Overpopulation can lead to overcrowding and poor quality housing in many
large cities. Poorly heated or damp housing could cause significant health problems, resulting in
illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Another serious consequence of overcrowding is a rising
crime rate as poor living conditions may lead young people in particular to take desperate measures
and turn to crime or drugs. There are some effects of overcrowding. The first one is loss of fresh
water. According to UN Water, 75% of planet Earth is covered in water. 97.5% of that is ocean and
2.5% is freshwater. 70% of freshwater is divided into glaciers and ice caps and the remaining 30% into
land surface water, such as rivers, lakes, ponds and groundwater. Most of the freshwater resources are
either unreachable or too polluted, leaving less than 1% of the world s freshwater, or about 0.003% of
all water on Earth, readily accessible for direct human use. According to the Global Outlook for Water
Resources to the Year 2025, it is estimated that by 2025, more than half of the world population will
be facing water based vulnerability and human demand for water will account for 70% of all available
freshwater. Furthermore, a report in November 2009 by the 2030 Water Resources Group suggests that
by 2030, in some developing
Saigal 2 regions in the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50% and a report jointly produced
by more than two dozen U.N. bodies states that, By 2030, nearly half of the world s people will be
living in areas of acute water shortage. The planet is in the midst of what the United Nations is calling
a Global Water Crisis. Freshwater is the most fundamental finite resource with no substitutes for most
uses, yet we are consuming fresh water at least 10 times faster than it is being replenished in regions
of northern Africa, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, China, and the U.S.. According to the World
Resources Institute, Freshwater ecosystems the diverse communities found in lakes, rivers,

The Influence Of Shopping Motivation, Optimum Stimulation Level And Cognitive Response On
Store Patronage Satisfaction: A Case Of Indonesia Tjong Budisantoso, Notre Dame University
Katherine Mizerski, Edith Cowan University Abstract This study focuses on the relationship between
shopping motivation, optimum stimulation level and cognitive response and store patronage
satisfaction. Shopping motivation focuses on the hedonic motivations for shopping while cognitive
response is measured in terms of the perception of merchandise quality and the perception of service
quality. The results indicate that a moderate relationship exists between shopping motivation and the
perception of merchandise quality and service quality. In turn, these ... Show more content on

Cognitive Response The environment offers non verbal communication for individuals (Broadbent,
Bunt and Jencks, 1980; Rapoport, 1982 and Bitner, 1992). This view is supported by Ittelson (1973) in
his characterization of environments: ...environment always provide more information than can
possibly aroused....Environment always represent, simultaneously, instances of redundant information,
of inadequate and ambiguous information, and of conflicting and contradictory information (p.75). If a
person is motivated to interact with the environment, this interaction would stimulate a cognitive
response. It is possible for this response to be integrated into a personally meaningful perception
which influences people s beliefs about a place, people and product (Rogers, 1979; Golledge, 1987;
Kaplan and Kaplan, 1982 and Rapoport, 1982). In the retailing literature, there is some support for the
view that store environment can induce cognitive responses which in turn may affect shopping
behavior (Marzuky and Jacoby, 1986; Ward, 1992; Sirgy et al., 2000). Bitner (1992) proposes a
conceptual framework explaining how the store atmosphere influences the approach avoidance
behavior through intervening variables. These intervening variables are emotional response, cognitive
response and

The Third And Last Pillar Of The German Banking System Essay
Commercial Banks The third and last pillar of the German banking system consists of commercial
banks also known in the third pillar as the market discipline. The third pillar gives out more public
disclosure and reporting requirements, compared to the other two pillars, with its increased
transparency. The amount of this increased disclosure is for giving the public and also the global
market a more comprehensible vision of where the bank stands in terms of risk. (Feig) With Universal
banks being the more common type, responsible for about 75 % of all transactions carried out in the
banking sector, these banks offer a greater amount of financial services and are more varied than
services of the specialized banks. These commercial banks offer typical banking services such as
setting up and watching over clients checking and savings accounts, process their payments, lending
money to clients, and as well as issuing bonds to clients. As of today, there lies roughly about 300
private banks all throughout Germany. It was only until the crisis in 2008 where five major banks used
to dominate the whole entire private sector. These five banks were Hypovereinsbank, Deutsche
Postbank AG, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and Dresdner Bank. Those five banks are more
internationalized than any other banks in the private sector that primarily focus on business clients and
the markets fluctuation activities. (Hassan) During the crisis in 2008, the bigger banks that Germany

I Was Arrested For 11th Degree Criminal Trespassing
On December , I was arrested for 3rd degree criminal trespassing. That day I was heading to go see
my dad at the hospital. He had suffered his second stroke and doctors wanted to talk about what is
possible for him since he was hooked on machines and unable to move or communicate in anyway for
himself, i was also his power of attorney so i would speak for him. I was focused on nothing more
than seeing my dad, but first i had to drop off my friend s shoes she had let me borrow. Along the way
i saw a walmart and i had not eaten all day and thought i could go in to get some snacks and a
smoothie for my dad. I called my friend to come pick me up at the walmart instead and drive me to the
hospital. She didn t live far so i thought by the time i came out the store she would have already been
outside waiting for me, but that wasn t the case. My phone had died at that point so i had no way of
calling her to let her know where i would be, so i decided to sit in front of the store where she could
see me since the bench inside was taken by a woman and her kids. 5 minutes later an officer came
asking me what i was doing there. I explained to him that i was waiting for a friend to come pick me
up and that she ll be here soon. He said okay but then proceeded to ask me questions like how many
times have I been arrested or how long i have been away from home or rather or not i bought the items
in my bag. I didn t understand why he was asking me all of those questions and began to feel

English Language Learners For My Assessment
Profile
The intended English language learners for my assessment would be primary aged students who are at
the beginning level, according to WIDA. Primary aged students are students in kindergarten through
grade 2, and WIDA describes students as beginning if they (a) understand and speak conversational
and academic English with hesitancy and difficulty, (b) understand parts of lessons and simple
directions, and (c) are at a pre emergent or emergent level of reading and writing in English,
significantly below grade level. (http://ell.dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/ell/pdf/elp levels.pdf).
Although my students would be young, they could be classified as significantly below grade level if
they cannot identify letters and perform poorly on the kindergarten screening and running records.
Most ELL students at this age are not literate in their native language, which may make learning
English literacy more difficult.
Rationale
The test I designed I could currently use with some of the students in my classes. I teach kindergarten
and first grade English Language Arts and Social Studies and we have a moderate number of
immigrant students whose parents do not speak English. Although we do not have an ESL program,
our bilingual program draws many native Spanish speaking students to our school because their
families want them to maintain their Spanish. We also have immigrant students from other countries,
such as Middle Eastern and African countries. This exam covers some of

WAP Gateway Essay
WAP Gateway WAP does not offer end to end security. WAP contraptions talk with web servers
through a widely appealing WAP entrance. WTLS is quite recently used between the device and the

infers the WAP gateway contains, at scarcest for some time span, un mixed data. The entryway dealers
need to figure out how to ensure that the unscrambling and re encryption occurs in memory, that keys

High Class Rank
High School, the place where memories are made, where anxiety is created, where relationships
happen, and where your adult life is beginning. But nothing seems to concern students minds more
than grades and with grades come ranking and with ranking comes competition and with competition
comes a plethora of good and bad. Class ranking, as many of you know, ranks students based on their
GPA from highest to lowest, subsequently giving someone with the highest GPA the highest rank and
vice versa. Initially, ranking appears to the positive system, encouraging and rewarding hard working
students with top class rank, but when you explore deeper into the process you find quite the opposite.

understanding of the school s rigor, and most importantly, no clear picture of the student and their true
potential. Tell me how you can compare number one from a serious school to number one at a joke
school? The methodology of class rank has created an inequitable process on the high school student
that is not a true measure of their intelligence and hard work. Even more importantly, class rank does
not allow a college admissions officer to truly examine a student for their individuality, goals, and
successes. And is not that the most

Equifax Data Breach
An analysis of the Equifax and Yahoo data breach
Introduction
A recent increase in large scale data breaches has exposed a multitude of cybersecurity vulnerabilities
that pose a definite risk to consumers (Lorio, 2017). In some cases, a data breach can distress an
establishment so much that other organizations experience a backlash from the repercussions (Kosseff,
2011). The Equifax data breach of 2017 is a perfect example of this kind of event as it caused an
overwhelming economic repercussion that affected other major corporations and more than 143
million credit card customers worldwide (Janakiraman, Lin, Rishika, 2018).
The consumer records appropriated in the Equifax data breach represent information from credit card
accounts that includes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The findings described in a report prepared by the Office of Senator Elizabeth Warren list several
reasons for the Equifax data breach. The report states that Equifax had a defective cybersecurity
system in place to mitigate data security (Franke Ruta, 2018). This included deficient patch
management practices, inadequate end point email monitoring, a weak network segmentation
structure, insubstantial credentialing procedures, and fragile logging methods (Franke Ruta, 2018).
The warning came in an attack on the Apaches Struts application software used to protect consumer
data in the Equifax cybersecurity systems on May 13, 2017 (Franke Ruta, 2018). However, Equifax
did not notice signs of the malicious activity until July 29, 2017 (Franke Ruta, 2018). Officials at
Equifax emailed staff members asking them to repair the weakness in the system, yet they did not
follow up on the request and confirm the repairs (Franke Ruta, 2018). Because the company failed to
patch the Apache Struts vulnerability, command injection attacks occurred that allowed an
unauthorized hacker to gain privileged access to an Equifax web server (West,

Life In Concentration Camps In Night By Irene Wiesel And...
Life in Concentration Camps
The rise of Anti Semitism was affecting the Jews all over Europe. Jewish towns and neighbourhoods
were confined to ghettos starting in 1939. After living in ghettos for approximately 2 years and under
unbearable conditions, German soldiers rounded up Jews and began to place them on trains. The
experiences of Elie Wiesel and Irene Fogel Weiss are just two of the millions of stories that exist.
Their experiences in the concentration camps have many similarities as well as many differences and
not only has the Holocaust left physical scars but psychological scars too, which Viktor Frankel has
written a book about, being a psychologist and a Holocaust survivor.
When looking at the experience of Elie Wiesel, a Jew born in Transylvania, and Irene Fogel Weiss, a
Jew born in Czechoslovakia, the two stories have many similarities and differences. The book Night,
written by Elie Wiesel illustrates his experience in the Holocaust, including his first experience of
family separation and being in a concentration camp. An article written about the life of Irene Fogel
Weiss gives a clear image of her life during the Holocaust, dealing with family separation as well as
the struggle to stay healthy enough to survive. Arbeit Macht Frei was a sign outside of Auschwitz, a
concentration camp in Poland. After being deported from the ghetto in their hometown, Elie and Irene
arrive at Auschwitz in the labour section. They were both given a number on

College Should NOT Be Free
Universities and colleges should let students who cannot afford tuition attend for free. Higher
education may put those attending into future debt that may be difficult to pay back. Many students
struggling with affording payments may experience schedule conflicts between work and school.
Providing free tuition not only helps the citizens of America to have a better future, but also helps the
country. The price to receive a degree can be very expensive for many people who cannot afford it.
Students who pay for their own tuition might come from a family where saving money for college was
not an option. Many families lean towards taking out loans to cover tuition cost. Taking out a loan can
be very complicated with the high interest that is added when paying it back. At the time parents or
students decide to take a loan out, they do not think about how they will repay the debt. After
receiving a degree many people find themselves trapped because finding a job to pay the loan back
can take a while if at all. Another option is for the student to work as well as being a full time student.
Students quickly find that trying to manage time between work and studying can be difficult. Many
students who work and go to school find themselves always rushing to get things done not giving
complete effort. Also, working can have a negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

4th Period When you hear the term biome, you think of plants and animals in the same biodiversity. A
biome is a group of similar ecosystems that cover a broad area, and maintained under the climate
conditions of the region, especially such a community that has developed to climax. Biomes are often
defined by abiotic factors such as climate, relief, geology, soils, and vegetation. There are five major
categories of biomes on earth. In these five, there are many sub biomes, under which are many more
well defined ecosystems. Do you know the most important biomes? The Desert biome is one of the
important biomes in the world, it covers about one fifth of the world s surface, averages less than

Analysis Of Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried
The Silent Killer: An Analysis of Imagination Evolving into a Distraction in Tim O Brien s The
Things They Carried
In Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried , O Brien created several allusions that each character
endured during the Vietnam War. Throughout the story were vast representations of the things the
soldiers carried both mentally and physically. The things they carried symbolized their individual roles
internally and externally. In addition to the symbolism, imagination was a focal theme that stood out
amongst the characters. This particular theme played a role as the silent killer amongst Lt. Cross and
the platoon both individually and collectively as a group. The theme of imagination created an in
depth look of how the war was perceived through each character which helped emphasize their
thoughts from an emotional standpoint of being young men out at war.
Imagination hindered the platoon which clouded their judgment and decision making. Instead of
remaining focused their wandering mind lacked what was necessary, assessing the task at hand. In
some respects, though not many, the waiting was worse than the tunnel itself. Imagination was a killer.
(O Brien 619) In relation to the quote imagination was a killer , this metaphor represents how the
soldiers made situations like being in the tunnel mentally challenging for them. Paranoia quickly
consumed their thoughts and emotions before partaking in the actual mission. The men

Physics Of The M N + 1 Ax N
The M n+1 AX n , or MAX phases are ternary carbides or nitrides with a hexagonal crystal structure,
wherein the M n+1 X n layers are interleaved with A layers. M is an early transition metal, A is an A
group element, which is mostly 13 and 14 groups and X is carbon or nitrogen. MAX phases exhibit a
unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics
which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1
6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and
readily machinable (due to weak
M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are
excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit
typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at
high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion
coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace
industry[2, 3, 5].
The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers.
Researchers have reported M 2 AX, M 3 AX 2 , and M 4 AX 3 phases, which refer to the 211, 312,
and 413 phases, respectively. In 1967, Ti 3 SiC 2 and Ti 3 GeC 2 were first synthesized by Jeitschko

Southwest Airlines Internal Analysis
Executive Summary
Southwest Airlines is one of the most profitable airlines in the airline industry. During turbulent
economic times Southwest has managed to continue strong revenue growth in a disastrous
environment and has operated profitably for 39 consecutive years (Mintzmyer, 2012). Southwest
Airlines has capitalized on the company s strength of being the top low cost carrier by offering a
simple and efficient business plan that prides itself on customer service. Southwest utilizes only the
Boeing 737 to streamline their processes, and utilizes their award winning Southwest.com to drive

more passengers than any other U.S. carrier. In 2011 Southwest Airlines Co. (2012) reported 104
million passengers carried with an average passenger load factor of 80.9 percent. In an industry that
ranks last in satisfaction among all industries measured by the American Customer Service Index
Southwest Airlines remained far and away at the top of the list with scoring 81 out of a possible 100

does have a strong customer satisfaction rating, resulting in a strong business and a large cash flow. It
would be very easy to continue to list the strengths of Southwest Airlines. However, after a review of
strengths there must be a review of weaknesses. The most obvious weakness noted in performing any
review of Southwest Airlines is regarding the company s service area. Currently Southwest Airlines
serves 103 destinations in 41 states, and the District of Columbia. What is missing is Southwest
serving a share of the international market. In the year 2009 2010 U.S. carriers received 85.8 million

Draft has come and gone, big free agents have drawn their battle lines and people are almost done
having a heart attack about Timofey Mozgov getting $16 million per season from the Los Angeles
Lakers. With nothing but the always exhilarating Summer League games ahead of us, here are the
biggest winners and losers of the NBA offseason.
Winners
Boston Celtics
Celtics fans may not have seen the blockbuster trade that they wanted, or the draft prospect that they
coveted, but they did land Big Al.
People may not realize it due to the Celtics being the most successful franchise in the history of the
NBA, but Boston has never landed a big free ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Nets also attempted to poach mediocre role players with huge contracts in Allen Crabbe and Tyler
Johnson, but failed to land either player when the Portland Trail Blazers and Miami Heat matched the
offers. Now, the Nets get to crown Jeremy Lin as their biggest free agent signing.
As seasons go by, Brooklyn fans have no other option but to sit and watch as there team gets worse
and worse, with no end in sight.
Oklahoma City Thunder
If you look at the Thunder s offseason prior to Kevin Durant s big decision, you can say it was a
productive one. The team acquired an intriguing talent in Victor Oladipo and added another young
talent in rookie Domantas Sabonis. Oklahoma City got younger while staying at the same competitive
level.
Then Durant left.
Oklahoma City isn t on this list just because Durant left, but because he gave them the kiss of death on
his way out the door. It s one thing to have a team lose a top three talent in the NBA. It s a horse of a
different color when he unleashes a looming plague on your franchise.
Durant s departure means Russell Westbrook is likely on his way out too. You know it, I know it, and
the Thunder know it. Hopefully, Oklahoma City can get decent talent in return if they trade
Westbrook, but the franchise may never be the

William E Baxter Case Summary
The vast majority of people playing poker online do so infrequently and for low stakes. In fact, many
of these online poker players could spend more money at a restaurant or the movies. For instance,
Ingo Fiedler of the University of Hamburg conducted the most comprehensive study of online poker
and found that the average player wagers rather insignificant stakes. Fiedler analyzed an online poker
database with 2,127,887 player identities at five different major poker sites over a six month period.
The median player only played 7 times over a six month period for a total of 4.87 hours. The stakes
were so low that the majority of players only averaged $0.87 an hour in rake, the house s commission.
Furthermore, the professional poker players on those sites clearly don t need the government to protect
them from themselves. In fact, the judicial system has recognized professional poker play as a
legitimate form of earned income with the case of William E. Baxter Jr. v United States. In 1986 the
courts ruled in favor of the Hall of Fame professional poker player, Billy Baxter, who challenged the
IRS and won. The IRS had considered his $1.2 million in poker winnings from 1978 to 1981 to be
based upon luck; therefore, his poker earnings were unearned income. That meant a higher tax rate of
70%, instead of the tax ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the government in this matter is to protect consumers by regulating the

How Did Ben Carson Impact Literature
Ben Carson impacted literature in big ways. He wrote an autobiography about his life, and he loved
reading scientific literature when he was in college. Ben made literature more significant because his
stories opened people s eyes to his past. Ben showed them that everyone struggles, but those who
struggle have the potential to become the most influential people in the world. Ben has also indirectly
influenced history by the movie Gifted Hands that tells Ben s life story. Ben Carson wrote an
autobiography, and many others wrote biographies about him and his story. These stories are
significant in literature as well as history, because it spread his story across the world. Ben mentioned
his childhood when he said: I started reading about people of great accomplishment... and it dawned
on me suddenly that the person who has the most to do with what happens in your life is you

Rap Music Research Paper
Rap Music Rap music has never been seen as a positive artistry by the media, but maybe the media is
just doing what it always does and portrays everything with a poor opinion and rap music really doesn
t influence someone s behavior as much as the media would like you to think. Socially everyone
thinks that kids that listen to rap music are more prone to violence and abuse towards women and that
is how it has been looked at in our culture, when really it s not the actually listening of the music than
it is the rap videos themselves that portray the misogynistic views and create misogynistic attitudes
within the audience that lead to a more accepting view of violence against women. Rap is stereotyped

Since culture is our shared reality, created and sustained through common experience, American
experience is now largely that which is shaped and maintained by the mass media... Violent music
lyrics have been shown to increase aggressive thoughts and feelings.... This creation of culture
through popular media was sadly exemplified recently when radio personality Don Imus referred to a
college women s basketball team as nappy headed ho s. Sadder still, many responded that the racist
and sexist language was acceptable because that type of language is used by minorities in rap music.
Unfortunately racist and sexist slurs influence real people, for example sending the message to girls
that this is how our society views them and causing issues with self esteem and identity. (Karen Dill,
2013) As she said above the radio host described college basketball girls nappy headed ho s which
would get any radio host now fired immediately without a second thought. Later on in her article she
explains how people believe that the media does not affect them, when in saying that it still does.
Karen list s five reasons why people misperceive that the media affects them: Person s natural
tendency to reject the notion that our habits are harmful, a mistaken view of how media effects work,
that media are produced primarily to entertain us, that media do not affect the viewer. She ends the

Reasons For The French Revolution
There were many causes that led to the French Revolution. Class, money, and philosophes were three
major factors that contributed to the French Revolution. The most important cause was money. These
factors resulted in Louis The Sixteenth and Marie Antoinette being executed, and the reign of
Napoleon to begin.
Class conflicts are a huge component of the French Revolution. The French Revolution began as a
result of the lack of the people s happiness over how they were told to live their lives. There were
three estates. The first estate being the clergy, the second estate being the nobility, and the third estate
being the bourgeoisie (commoners). The first and second estate consisted of very few people, but was
given most of the money, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the first and second estate voted that the bourgeoisie should pay all the taxes, the bourgeoisies was
outvoted and was forced to keep paying all of the taxes. The nobility and clergy were very greedy,
especially the clergy. Their morals were supposed to be more focused on the word of god, instead of
being focused on the material aspects of life on Earth. The clergy was supposed to be kind and helpful,
instead of selfish. Since the clergy was greedy, it lead France to be in even more debt and have more
conflicts. There were many privileges only given to the upper classes, which made it unfair. At the
beginning of the French Revolution, the bourgeoisie became very fed up with the inequalities within
the classes. To deal with the inequalities, the estates decided to gather in the tennis courts and take an
oath called the Tennis court Oath. The Tennis court Oath stated that they would not leave until a new
constitution was created. In the end, a new constitution was created and a new form of government
was put into place. The new government was called the national assembly. The national assembly
lasted from 1789 1799 but was then abolished as it upset many people in France because the priorities
of the National Assemblies decisions did not meet the people s needs.
Money was also a major factor to the French Revolution. Once Louis The Sixteenth and Marie
Antoinette became absolute monarchs in 1774, they lavishly spent money. The couple

The Effects Of Language On Language Influences
One of the greatest influential pieces of research within this area of cognitive psychology originates
from Whorf (1956), whom proposed that language influences or determines the way in which an
individual thinks (Whorfian Hypothesis). Subsequently, Miller and McNeil (1969) distinguished three
versions of this hypothesis, simply ladled strong , weak and very weak . The strong hypothesis
emphasizes the role of language when creating cognition, essentially language determines thought.
The weak states that language influences memory perception. Finally, the very weak hypothesis states
that language influences memory.

One argument, for example, is to investigate how and individuals thinks about time and space, from
this it is suggest that the syntax and morphology of a language can affect how a speaker thinks about
time and space. For example, Whorf suggested that Hopi speakers, think about time and space in a
very different way than English speakers, who have a very linear Newtonian perspective on the topic;
very unlike the Hopi speakers who have a very natural physicist relativistic perspective. The research
here, brings forward the idea that the language we speak does have an influence on the way in which
we think, especially in more abstract topics as time and space Slobin, D. I. (1996).
On the other hand, some psychologist argue that Whorf s study suffers from methodological problems,
which could have an effect on the reliability and validity of the results. Malotki (1983) stated that
when the Hopi speakers talk about time, it may not be as different from the English speakers as Whorf
made it to appear. If there are no actual differences between the languages, then there should be no
intention to posit differences in the thoughts of their speakers, such as Whorf did with the Hopi
people. Pinker (1992) also argued that particular behavioural differences between language groups
have turned out to be artefacts of clumsy translation. Therefore, this piece of research is important in
this field of

Was the Falklands War a Success or a Failure for...
Was the Falklands War a political success or failure for the Thatcher government?
On 2 April 1982, the British political system was rocked by news of an extraordinary event eight
thousand miles away in the South Atlantic. A long standing and thorny dispute with Argentina over
sovereignty of the Falkland Islands a tiny relic of empire proximate to the South American mainland
had erupted with a sudden and unprovoked invasion of British territory by Argentine forces. Britain s
Conservative government faced the greatest crisis in foreign affairs for a generation (Freedman, 1988).
Behind this audacious Argentine manoeuvre laid the assumption that the British Government

By the 1960s, the territory had all but outlived its commercial and strategic usefulness; its defence was
financially untenable; and they caused a tremendous strain on British Argentine relations.
Relinquishing this imperial hangover to the nation that so passionately demanded its sovereignty
seemed a perfect solution and, indeed, successive British governments have indicated a willingness to
oblige (Jenkins, 2007). The difficulty, however, was that this most obvious of remedies has always
contravened the expressed wishes of the local population, who consider themselves wholly British.
This clash of interests hatched a string of dilatory and rather confused policy initiatives, on the one
hand assuring British rule to the Islanders whilst, at the same time, discussing a future transfer of
sovereignty with Argentina (Sharp, 1999). Hence, by the time Thatcher came to power in 1979,
Argentina s patience had worn thin, indeed, its national press were signalling dire consequences for
Britain s continued filibustering. To break this uneasy deadlock, Thatcher s new Foreign Secretary,
Lord Carrington, proposed a compromise termed leaseback , which asserted Britain would concede
sovereignty to Argentina on the condition that a British administration then be permitted to govern the
Islands hence protecting the lifestyles and freedoms of the local inhabitants (Freedman, 1988). With
Thatcher s government appearing prepared to relinquish the leftovers of empire recently

Essay about Wide Sargasso Sea and Antoinette
Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre intertwined
In Wide Sargasso Sea, author Jean Rhys uses intertextuality to tell the story of Antoinette Mason.
Intertexuality is when an author bases their book/novel off of another text. In this case, Wide Sargasso
Sea is shaped from Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre and it elaborates on the character of Bertha, who is
Antoinette Mason in Rhys novel. By reading Wide Sargasso Sea we are enlightened on things in Jane
Eyre that Bronte does not tell us about or elaborate on. Also, by reading Jane Eyre we understand
things about Wide Sargasso Sea that Rhys doesn t include in her novel. Both authors have created
compelling novels that aren t built from each other and provides a deeper understanding of one ...

From the story of her life we get a better understanding of her role as a character in Jane Eyre and
perhaps most of the mystery we have is cleared up. Wide Sargasso Sea is a very creative literary piece
that provides depth to a character whose story would have gone untold.
After reading Wide Sargasso Sea we have a better understanding of Jane Eyre and some of the events
that took place within the novel. We find more out about Rochester s dark past; Bronte just didn t go
far enough back to enlighten us on his marriage. After reading Rhys s Wide Sargasso Sea we now
know how Rochester and Antoinette s relationship came to be. Their marriage was arranged so that
Rochester would have financial stability because he was the second son and was likely to not inherit
anything from his father. Rochester felt he was duped into marrying Antoinette by his father and
everyone else. In one scene Rochester says, As I walked I remembered my father s face and his thin
lips, my brother s round conceited eyes. They knew. And Richard the fool, he knew too...They all
knew. (Rhys 62). He thinks everyone knew Antoinette was crazy but didn t tell him. Rochester seems
to be ashamed with himself over locking Antoinette in the attic, but he feels like it was the right thing
for him to do. He would have had a miserable life and also would have put everyone in danger at
Thornfield, with crazy Antoinette around. Antoinette was a lunatic and if Rochester had to put up with

A Narrow Fellow in the Grass
A Narrow Fellow in the Grass By Emily Dickinson.
A Narrow Fellow in the Grass Is believed to have been written in 1865. About a year later it was
published under the title The Snake by a journal called Springfield Republican. This poem express
nature s infamous creatures, the snake. The poem is built around what appears to be and what is. This
poem is meant to be read aloud and appreciated for it s precision. Some would say A Narrow Fellow
in the Grass is perhaps the most nearly perfect poem addressing nature. Also this poem itself has
received a great deal of critical attention. In the opening lines, Dickinson cleverly states the subject of

Oddly, the definition of wrinkle is a clever trick . In these lines he was tricked by the snake for it was
not what it appeared to be. The image of a snake wrinkling suggests the snake was frightened by the
approach of the speaker. Also, in lines seventeen through twenty the speaker claims to have a
connection to the outdoors and its animals. He feels close to these creatures and he describes this
connection as a transport In lines twenty one through twenty four the speaker describes the feeling of
an encounter with a snake as a moment of shock and fear. He mentions on how he had tighter
breathing from the panic. Most people who has encountered with a snake has felt the fear and the
panic. In the final line he describes the feeling with the metaphor zero at the bone referring to the bone
chilling terror. The end suggest that the snake which is referred as harmless might possible be
deceptive. The speaker, which suggest that he loves all animals, cannot love dangerous trickster the
snake in the grass. The speaker reacts to the snake as if it were a living terror of the unknown, for it is
both chilling and startling. Dickinson wrote several riddle type poems, where she uses metaphor to
compare her subject to something, without letting you know. Each stanza has clues in the form of

Dichotomy Of Rejection
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not

Jesus preached that we should walk with the sinner, invite them to eat at our table, love them
unconditionally, because we all sin, He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at
her. John 8:7. Christians live in a dichotomy of shunning what we view as unacceptable and
participating in it, and no one wants to discuss what that means in relation to Jesus, or God. The time
has come to invite everyone to our table with a humble heart, to show the world the love of the Lord

Both studies and experience shows that rejection causes emotional distress on the recipients, and
eventually begins to have negative emotional effects on the rejector. Those who are ostracized and
outcast from society feel the pain of rejection in a way that is similar to physical pain. Rejection also
has serious implications for an individual s psychological state and for society in general. Social
rejection can influence emotion, cognition and even physical health. Ostracized people sometimes

The Characteristics Of The Monarch Butterfly
The monarch population has decreased up to about 22 million from last year to this year. (Rice) The
monarch butterfly is an insect that is beneficial to the ecosystem ;however, their population has
decreased over the years. Poaching and farming have caused this declination ,but there are solutions
we can work with that may help the population increase once again. The monarch butterfly is known
by scientists as Danaus plexippus, which in Greek literally means sleepy transformation. The name
evokes the species ability to hibernate and metamorphize.(Schafer) Monarch butterflies are indicator
species just like they are pollinators as well ,and their characteristics all serve different purposes to

females are a little smaller in size. Additionally, they live up to about two to six weeks as they grow
from a caterpillar to becoming an adult monarch butterfly. Their life cycle is made up of four stages:
egg, the larvae, the pupa, and the adult butterfly. It lasts about 28 to 38 days to be able to complete the

Vietnam s History and the Twentieth Century
It is both necessary and helpful to study the context of prior history because it reveals who we are in
relation to other people, cultures, and countries. Exploring the history of different peoples and cultures
experiences provides a clearer picture of their views, beliefs, feelings, and opinions. History is a story
told from a political and educational style. Learning how the past shaped a country and the leaders that
had a part in it helps us understand that country s ways and interactions with other countries.
The study of history influences our understanding of others and their culture. Like the quote If we don
t know from where we came, we don t know where we are going . Envisage a world where no one
knew anything about history; no documentation of any event, place or person. How would anyone be
able to 1) avoid repeating past mistakes. 2) know anything of those who came before and all of their
struggles, successes, and failures. By learning about history s participants and events, we can find a
source of inspiration from their courage, diligence and leadership styles.
One of the main reasons to study world history is to learn from and guard against past mistakes. Today
s military leaders should study not only their current enemy s war tactics and maneuvers but also those
of any others that took place in the area to provide context that helps equip an agile mind to make
informed decisions. Using the past actions, military leaders could anticipate their moves and

Environmental Impacts Of Hurricane Sandy
When Hurricanes Attack
Colby Tibbitts
Natural Disasters
02/25/16
During the last few months of 2012, the world was in shock when Hurricane Sandy formed and
disrupted the lives of many people. Hurricane Sandy began on October 22 as a tropical storm in the
Caribbean, then a couple days later developed into a hurricane in the Jamaican area. On October 29,
Hurricane Sandy made its way into New Jersey as a category 2 storm, but eventually started effecting
the northeastern region of The United States. States like Florida, Maine, and New York were greatly
affected. Hurricane Sandy was recorded as the largest Atlantic hurricane. The wind diameter was up
1100 miles. (Trento and Allen, 2014). The way Hurricane Sandy formed was a very rare climate event,
according to Yuval Neria and James M. Shultz. Sandy merged with a polar jet stream and formed a

Weapons developed in this century were primarily used for defense of a structure or infantry and
cavalry. The first firearms were matchlock guns developed in this century. Matchlock guns were fuse
ignited and lit by a match. When the fuse burned down it ignited gun powder and fired projectiles.
Matchlock guns were widely used for up to a century before the Wheelock is invented.
16th 17th century weapons.
The wheel lock gun is invented. Similar to the matchlock in every way, except its ignited by a

  • 3. The Major Causes And Effects Of Overcrowding In Cities Overcrowding in cities Many countries of the world are currently experiencing problems caused by rapidly growing populations in urban areas, and both governments and individuals have a duty to find ways to overcome these problems. Overpopulation can lead to overcrowding and poor quality housing in many large cities. Poorly heated or damp housing could cause significant health problems, resulting in illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Another serious consequence of overcrowding is a rising crime rate as poor living conditions may lead young people in particular to take desperate measures and turn to crime or drugs. There are some effects of overcrowding. The first one is loss of fresh water. According to UN Water, 75% of planet Earth is covered in water. 97.5% of that is ocean and 2.5% is freshwater. 70% of freshwater is divided into glaciers and ice caps and the remaining 30% into land surface water, such as rivers, lakes, ponds and groundwater. Most of the freshwater resources are either unreachable or too polluted, leaving less than 1% of the world s freshwater, or about 0.003% of all water on Earth, readily accessible for direct human use. According to the Global Outlook for Water Resources to the Year 2025, it is estimated that by 2025, more than half of the world population will be facing water based vulnerability and human demand for water will account for 70% of all available freshwater. Furthermore, a report in November 2009 by the 2030 Water Resources Group suggests that by 2030, in some developing Saigal 2 regions in the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50% and a report jointly produced by more than two dozen U.N. bodies states that, By 2030, nearly half of the world s people will be living in areas of acute water shortage. The planet is in the midst of what the United Nations is calling a Global Water Crisis. Freshwater is the most fundamental finite resource with no substitutes for most uses, yet we are consuming fresh water at least 10 times faster than it is being replenished in regions of northern Africa, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, China, and the U.S.. If a person is motivated to interact with the environment, this interaction would stimulate a cognitive response. In the retailing literature, there is some support for the view that store environment can induce cognitive responses which in turn may affect shopping behavior (Marzuky and Jacoby, 1986; Ward, 1992; Sirgy et al., 2000). The Third And Last Pillar Of The German Banking System Essay Commercial Banks The third and last pillar of the German banking system consists of commercial banks also known in the third pillar as the market discipline. The third pillar gives out more public disclosure and reporting requirements, compared to the other two pillars, with its increased transparency. The amount of this increased disclosure is for giving the public and also the global market a more comprehensible vision of where the bank stands in terms of risk. (Feig) With Universal banks being the more common type, responsible for about 75 % of all transactions carried out in the banking sector, these banks offer a greater amount of financial services and are more varied than services of the specialized banks. Throughout the story were vast representations of the things the soldiers carried both mentally and physically. The things they carried symbolized their individual roles internally and externally. In addition to the symbolism, imagination was a focal theme that stood out amongst the characters. This particular theme played a role as the silent killer amongst Lt. Cross and the platoon both individually and collectively as a group. The theme of imagination created an in depth look of how the war was perceived through each character which helped emphasize their thoughts from an emotional standpoint of being young men out at war. Imagination hindered the platoon which clouded their judgment and decision making. Instead of remaining focused their wandering mind lacked what was necessary, assessing the task at hand. In some respects, though not many, the waiting was worse than the tunnel itself. Imagination was a killer. M is an early transition metal, A is an A group element, which is mostly 13 and 14 groups and X is carbon or nitrogen. MAX phases exhibit a unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1 6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and readily machinable (due to weak M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace industry[2, 3, 5]. The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers. Socially everyone thinks that kids that listen to rap music are more prone to violence and abuse towards women and that is how it has been looked at in our culture, when really it s not the actually listening of the music than it is the rap videos themselves that portray the misogynistic views and create misogynistic attitudes within the audience that lead to a more accepting view of violence against women. Violent music lyrics have been shown to increase aggressive thoughts and feelings.... This creation of culture through popular media was sadly exemplified recently when radio personality Don Imus referred to a college women s basketball team as nappy headed ho s. Sadder still, many responded that the racist and sexist language was acceptable because that type of language is used by minorities in rap music. Unfortunately racist and sexist slurs influence real people, for example sending the message to girls that this is how our society views them and causing issues with self esteem and identity. (Karen Dill, 2013) As she said above the radio host described college basketball girls nappy headed ho s which would get any radio host now fired immediately without a second thought. Later on in her article she explains how people believe that the media does not affect them, when in saying that it still does. Karen list s five reasons why people misperceive that the media affects them: Person s natural tendency to reject the notion that our habits are harmful, a mistaken view of how media effects work, that media are produced primarily to entertain us, that media do not affect the viewer. • 27. Reasons For The French Revolution There were many causes that led to the French Revolution. Class, money, and philosophes were three major factors that contributed to the French Revolution. The most important cause was money. These factors resulted in Louis The Sixteenth and Marie Antoinette being executed, and the reign of Napoleon to begin. Class conflicts are a huge component of the French Revolution. The French Revolution began as a result of the lack of the people s happiness over how they were told to live their lives. There were three estates. The first estate being the clergy, the second estate being the nobility, and the third estate being the bourgeoisie (commoners). As the first and second estate voted that the bourgeoisie should pay all the taxes, the bourgeoisies was outvoted and was forced to keep paying all of the taxes. The nobility and clergy were very greedy, especially the clergy. Their morals were supposed to be more focused on the word of god, instead of being focused on the material aspects of life on Earth. The clergy was supposed to be kind and helpful, instead of selfish. Since the clergy was greedy, it lead France to be in even more debt and have more conflicts. There were many privileges only given to the upper classes, which made it unfair. At the beginning of the French Revolution, the bourgeoisie became very fed up with the inequalities within the classes. To deal with the inequalities, the estates decided to gather in the tennis courts and take an oath called the Tennis court Oath. The Tennis court Oath stated that they would not leave until a new constitution was created. In the end, a new constitution was created and a new form of government was put into place. The new government was called the national assembly. The national assembly lasted from 1789 1799 but was then abolished as it upset many people in France because the priorities of the National Assemblies decisions did not meet the people s needs. Money was also a major factor to the French Revolution. Once Louis The Sixteenth and Marie Antoinette became absolute monarchs in 1774, they lavishly spent money. The couple ... The Effects Of Language On Language Influences One of the greatest influential pieces of research within this area of cognitive psychology originates from Whorf (1956), whom proposed that language influences or determines the way in which an individual thinks (Whorfian Hypothesis). For example, Whorf suggested that Hopi speakers, think about time and space in a very different way than English speakers, who have a very linear Newtonian perspective on the topic; very unlike the Hopi speakers who have a very natural physicist relativistic perspective. The research here, brings forward the idea that the language we speak does have an influence on the way in which we think, especially in more abstract topics as time and space Slobin, D. I. (1996). On the other hand, some psychologist argue that Whorf s study suffers from methodological problems, which could have an effect on the reliability and validity of the results. Malotki (1983) stated that when the Hopi speakers talk about time, it may not be as different from the English speakers as Whorf made it to appear. If there are no actual differences between the languages, then there should be no intention to posit differences in the thoughts of their speakers, such as Whorf did with the Hopi people. On 2 April 1982, the British political system was rocked by news of an extraordinary event eight thousand miles away in the South Atlantic. A long standing and thorny dispute with Argentina over sovereignty of the Falkland Islands a tiny relic of empire proximate to the South American mainland had erupted with a sudden and unprovoked invasion of British territory by Argentine forces. By the 1960s, the territory had all but outlived its commercial and strategic usefulness; its defence was financially untenable; and they caused a tremendous strain on British Argentine relations. Relinquishing this imperial hangover to the nation that so passionately demanded its sovereignty seemed a perfect solution and, indeed, successive British governments have indicated a willingness to oblige (Jenkins, 2007). The difficulty, however, was that this most obvious of remedies has always contravened the expressed wishes of the local population, who consider themselves wholly British. This clash of interests hatched a string of dilatory and rather confused policy initiatives, on the one hand assuring British rule to the Islanders whilst, at the same time, discussing a future transfer of sovereignty with Argentina (Sharp, 1999). Hence, by the time Thatcher came to power in 1979, Argentina s patience had worn thin, indeed, its national press were signalling dire consequences for Britain s continued filibustering. To break this uneasy deadlock, Thatcher s new Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, proposed a compromise termed leaseback , which asserted Britain would concede sovereignty to Argentina on the condition that a British administration then be permitted to govern the Islands hence protecting the lifestyles and freedoms of the local inhabitants (Freedman, 1988).
