The Era Of Andrew Jackson
Sedona Swanner History 1301 Mr. Spence November 10, 2015 The Era of Andrew Jackson Andrew
Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, elected in eighteen twenty eight. Prior to his
presidency Andrew Jackson was well known and favored for his success against the British in the war
of eighteen twelve. Upon election, Andrew Jackson became known as the people s president gaining
the majority of electoral votes over his opponent John quincy Adams.Throughout his presidency many
events occurred that would shape America as a nation. During his time as President Andrew Jackson
was both favored and hated by many individuals. His actions pleased certain groups of people, but
would also cause for a loss of support amongst Americans. Jackson s legacy would leave behind a
strong willed group of supporters, known as the Democrat party, and the creation of opposed
individuals known as the Whig party as well. His presidency would be viewed as time of
improvements to some, but to others who strongly opposed his presidency, it would be seen as a time
for unjust tariffs and conflict. Jackson s presidency would be characterized by key events such as the
Indian removal act, the nullification crisis, and the dispute known as the war against the bank, that
would alter the nation forever. One of the many acts put into place during Andrew Jackson s time as
president includes the highly controversial Indian Removal Act. The Indian removal act was signed
and put into place by President

The Characteristics Of Sympathism In Bartleby, The Scrivener
Nothing is more patience trying than watching paint slowly dry, the one exception to this sentiment
however, maybe the patience of a wise kind man being tested to his absolute limit.
This is certainly apparent as you envelope yourself into the story of Bartleby, The Scrivener . It is for
several reasons that we have sympathised with the character Lawyer . For one, Bartleby, soon after
being hired, began refusing to do the duties required of him for his job. The Lawyer would let this
behaviour slip despite complaints from the other workers of the office. Secondly during the story there
is a point when the Lawyer realizes Bartleby has been squatting at his firm. He again chooses not to
punish or scold, but rather offer him a place to live. And for some reason Bartleby again says no.
Lastly we get to the point of Bartleby being placed in jail. At this point most people s sympathies
might have gone out the window, but The Lawyer is no ordinary man in this aspect. He still feels
guilty and even decides to go see Bartleby. It is in these following paragraphs that we will convey our
sympathies toward The Lawyer s relentless attempts to help Bartleby.
At first, the illusion of a good work ethic is put forth by Bartleby. Nevertheless this commitment is
short lived and he begins refusing to do his work stating I would prefer not to anytime he is asked to
review his copies documents. This is something that The Lawyer chooses not to condemn at first out
of some sort of

Brain Case Work Case Study
Case Study One: Anne
During the first case study, Anne uses many various brain areas and structures. I chose to focus on the
Occipital Lobe, the Hypothalamus, and the Frontal Lobe. The Occipital Lobe is used when Anne looks
outside and at the easel she is painting on. She must see the objects she is replicating as well as where
she is painting. Another brain area that Anne uses while painting is the Hypothalamus. This brain
structure motivates her to paint what she sees in her garden. The last brain area that I want to reference
is the Frontal Lobe. Anne s Frontal Lobe allows her to move her body from the window, to the easel,
and her hand from the paint, to the canvas.

Louis XIV Essay examples
Louis XIV
After being ruled by a prime minister for so long, France needed some changes. That is exactly what
Louis the XIV would bring to France. In an age of separation, Louis wanted to start a unification
process. He started this by giving himself sole power and also only having one religion for the
country. The king is always the center of attention good or bad. Louis was prepared to take the good
with the bad, and handled it well. He emphasized the king as the center of attention. While some see
him as egotistical and greedy, Louis was one king who knew how to make improvements.
At four years and eight months, Louis XIV became King. His mother, Anne of Austria, ruled until he

Many think he left France worse off than it started because of the way he left the treasury. It was
thought that he spent the money only on himself, leaving the peasants with no money. It is also said
that he spent the money on building his residences (Versailles and Marly) and supporting his luxurious
lifestyle. Another argument brought up is how he was so egotistical. One reason for his being
egotistical was the fact that he was thought of as God Given because the court was hoping that Louis
XIII would have a child before he died. People talk about how he compared himself to the sun. As
ruler Louis, thought of himself as the sun, which meant he was the center of the kingdom and his
subjects rotated around him. Some see this as incredibly egotistical and thought that made him less of
a ruler. One aspect of his being the sun was the fact that his bedroom was placed in the middle of the
castle; he was always center of attention, as the sun would be. The other reason people think he was a
negative influence on France was the fact that as soon as the last Prime minister died, Louis made
himself the ruler. He decided to make all the decisions by himself, with no help. Some think this was a
bad idea because he had no previous ruling experience by himself. These same people were angered
when Louis re established Catholicism, nullifying the Edict of Nantes. Some of the people of

Fantasy Football Discourse Community Essay
Fantasy Football as a Discourse Community
According to NFL.com, Fantasy football puts you and your friends in the front office and on the
sidelines as you play as the General Manager and Coach of your own hand picked team. You choose
your team through a draft system from a list of the best players in the National Football League and
they compete on a week by week basis for your team. You set your lineup each week during the
season and watch as touchdowns, field goals, yards gained, interceptions, sacks, blocked field goals,
and a lot more factors generate fantasy points for your team. A fantasy football league can t function

Which is why we believe that fantasy football functions effectively as a discourse community. Scholar
John Swales has done a lot of research and work to help others effectively understand the concepts of
discourse communities. John Swales proposes six defining characteristics that are necessary and
sufficient for identifying a group of individuals as a discourse community. Swales very first step says
a discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals (Swales 220) which are
achieved in a variety of ways including the mechanisms of intercommunications among its members
(Swales 221). A discourse community utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the
communicative furtherance of its aims (Swales 221). With these given characteristics we believe that
fantasy football functions as a discourse community among different men and woman. Although
fantasy football is not an academic discourse community, it can certainly help add to the question if

The Aryan National Liberation Front
Arthur Buzz Hirsch, a St. Joseph News Press reporter, conducted a background investigation on the
Aryan National Liberation Front (ANLF). This group is one of white supremacist and anti government
ideology. This group, according to confidential sources, is involved in harassment and tax evasion.
Two incidents, a bombing on February 12th (which two men have been arrested for) and a shooting
that took place on March 10th, are believed to be connected to the ANLF. However, a confidential
sources says the ANLF has nothing to do with the shooting. Recently, police and a member of the
prosecutor s office showed up at the News Press offices with a warrant, demanding Hirsch to turn over
all notes, research materials, and recordings relating to the ANLF. Also, he was urged to identify his
sources. Hirsch refused to do both. Whether or not the prosecuting office can demand Hirsch to turn
over any information depends on court precedents and current laws. In Branzburg v. Hayes (1972), the
Supreme Court decided the First Amendment did not grant reportorial privilege in the court. This
means journalists and other members of the press cannot use freedom of speech as a defense in order
to not testify. This includes if a source was meant to be confidential. Lower courts interpreted
Branzburg differently. In the case of Branzburg, reportorial privilege was unnecessary. Later with
Zerilli v. Smith (1981), the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that reportorial privilege existed.

Jane Eyre Development
Jane Eyre follows the moral development of a young scared girl to a strong and unwavering woman.
Through each stage of her development was an imperious male character. Jane first encounters John
Reed, a spoiled and obscene person. She shortly after encounters the intensely bitter Mr. Brocklehurst.
Mr. Brocklehurst seemed like a good man at first but proved to be far from that. Next was Edward
Rochester. While he was by no means as harsh as John Reed or Mr.Brocklehurst he was cruel in his
own way. Finally, the last strong male character was St. John Rivers. He is cold hearted and repressed.
The exact opposite of the fiery Rochester. These characters vary greatly and all had an immense

what love is. Up until that point in her life she never experienced love from anyone. During their
relationship, Jane learns about Edward s dark past with Bertha. She flees to Thornfield because she
realized she was too dependent on one person. This is the first time she was really ever alone in life.
During her other stages of life she had others to lean on however, for the first time she was finally

The first goal setting interview I had was with one of my students by the name of Skyler. Based off of
my interaction with Skyler these past few days, he is always looking for ways to get better with
academics as well as a become a better scholar. Not to mention, Skyler is a high performing student in
reading and math. When asked, What is something you would like to work on for the school year? , he
responded I would like to do better in math and cooperate. Skyler sometimes gives me a hard time
when it comes to cooperating in class. It is good to see that he also chose a behavior that I have

Argument in Favor of Oedipus Fate
Play: Oedipus Rex
Writter: Sophocles
No one can deny freewill of a person totally, so as fate. But as I m in favor of Oedipus, the protagonist
of ancient Greek play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. I think here in it, fate is more responsible for
Oedipus end.
Many questions were raised against Oedipus in class argument about his character flaws, running from
the fate, killing his father, marrying his mother, and insulting prophet etc. Here I would try to answer
as much I can.
Firstly it is important to mention that, it is the play which had great importance for ... Show more

If the fate is already been cast in iron, then what difference do his characteristics make! Teiresias
himself said that whatever is written in fate will be done;
Teiresias
Well, it will come what will, though I be mute.
Oedipus
Since come it must, thy duty is to tell me.
Teiresias
I have no more to say; storm as thou willst,
And give the rein to all thy pent up rage. (341 347)
If it is to be asked that why he was so aggressive? He should control his anger! Moreover why he
murdered four people, as murder is a sin. So it should be kept in mind that he was already upset by the
unexpected prophecy and servants became him angrier by attacking him, also he was the same
arrogant father s son, so he should not be blame only.
Names from the heroic age were of course often related to the man s nature or destiny or we can also
take it in other way that name effect person s life. Usually good and meaningful names are considered
important because they have some effect on human s whole life and personality. So we can say that
names did their work in this play as well. The name Oedipus is derived from a verb oida which means
know which connects to knowledge and pous means swollen foot . It can be meant like that, a person
who knows his feet, by which he was able to solve the riddle.
After solving the riddle, he got famous as the hero of Thebes, he became the new king as Laius was

Analysis Of Catcher In The Rye And The Secret Garden
What makes her coming of age narrative distinctive is that she does not set out as a naive or innocent
character. Instead, her entire life up until she arrives at Misselthwaite Manor has been a harsh reality: a
child abandoned and neglected by her mother as she is left under the care of servants, later losing
everything she has previously known due to an outbreak of cholera.
Narration
Despite the similarities between Catcher in the Rye and The Secret Garden, the narrators of the works
vastly differ. Holden Caulfield himself narrates his experiences leading up to the mental institution in
a colloquial first person. As a first person narrator, Holden s reliability has to be called into question.
Given that Holden is a narrator who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of alienating readers, it draws them even closer to Holden. Holden s voice and his coming of
age journey are inseparable. In contrast, the story of The Secret Garden is told through an opinionated
third person narrator. The narrator does not recount events passively, but instead inserts his or her own
voice and opinions such as how Mary was a tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived into the
narrative (Burnett 1). In a sense, the narrator serves as a guide in Mary s venture into adolescence
during a period when Mary herself may not fully comprehend her transformation. To contextualize
this change, the narrator often turns to physical descriptions as opposed to mental ones. As the
children mature and develop, their appearance and vitality heal as they progressively begin to
resemble regular, healthy children. As mentioned by the narrator, [Colin] was coming alive with the
garden (Burnett 202). Despite the reliability of the narrator, Mary s personal growth is omitted from
the narrative and readers are left with only the physical development and dialogue between characters.
Consequently, the information given by the narrator is the sole insight readers have into Mary s state
and her psychological state is left for interpretation.
Role of Caretakers In addition, the role of the caretaker is significant in both coming of age

Argumentative Essay On Animal Rights
Animal rights has always been conversional subject, what rights do they have, what type of treatment
they may endure, and what is wildlife versus what are pets. Society as it a whole as always had used
animals as form entertainment for example like zoos, circuses, aquariums, rodeos, animal fighting and
hunting. Though these types of entertainments project as innocent forms of fun for all ages when it s
enslavement for the animals. These animals are taken from their homes to be forced behind cages,
glass and concert walls to perform for the paying customer. The animals see millions of human faces
pressed against these walls staring in hoping to see them do tricks or just move in general. These
animals are also forced to perform and train for hours on in just to be a meal ticket for the right buyer.
The advertisement above illustrates how animals are used like puppets for entertainment. When you
think of puppets, you think of a puppet master pulling the strings, to make the puppet dance, sing and
entertain you. Now just picture a wild animal having invisible strings attached to them with a puppet
master giving orders. Instead of strings they use actual force and punishment to get what they want.
While in the picture it states, The show must go on , when you hear this phrase you know meaning
that regardless of what happens, whatever show has been planned still must be performed for the
paying guests, the same goes for animals too. Which suggest no matter how much force, pain

Surrealism In Sweetheart Of The Song Tra Bong
In many war stories, people become intrigued with the events that happened during the war and are
very curious what happened. They become interested in it because the storyteller gives a very deep
description about everything, whether it s from violence or gory happenings. However, not all war
stories are all true. The stories that some storytellers explain becomes surrealism. Surrealism is a
mixture of fact and fantasy, where it will become unreal or bizarre. Some parts of the story will be
real, and some will be unreal and over the top. Usually, surrealism is added to the story, because if

Different soldiers tell the story of what happened during the war, but sometimes, we don t know if it is

the rest of her vacation there, but then her curiosity of Vietnam got to her. Mary Anne was curious of
what Vietnam was like, so she goes out of the campsite and explores the country. When Mark Fossie
realizes that she was gone, he searches for her, but he couldn t find her. One day, once he found her, he
realized that she was the Greenies and that she was practicing Vietnam s tradition. But the grotesque
part, he said, was her jewelry. At the girl s throat was a necklace of human tongues. Elongated and
narrow, like pieces of blackened leather, the tongues were threaded along a length of copper wire, one
tongue overlapping the next, the tips curled upwards if caught in a final shrill syllable (105 106). She
wore a necklace that had tongues on it, which was the tradition of the Vietnamese people. In the end of
the story, she became part of that

The Freedom Of Speech And Worship Essay
During the Second World War, there was a change in equality within the United States of America.
These changes did not take place until after Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote a famous speech that closely
looked at the essential freedoms and rights of each person in the world, the Four Freedoms. Freedom
of speech and worship, along with freedom from want and fear, were the topics of this great speech.
People compared Roosevelt s speech to some of the other more influential and well known
proclamations known during that era: including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Magna Carta, and
even the Ten Commandments. The power and confidence this address held spread beyond the United
States just as Roosevelt hoped, giving other nations an example of what could be if there was peace.
The Four Freedoms speech became a universal proclamation that granted and encouraged freedom
everywhere, even while denying those same human rights to American citizens.
Freedom of speech and worship are two rights in which most people are accustomed to. As they are
laid out in the first amendment of the Constitution, any citizen has the right to speak their mind and
worship how they would like. Freedom from want describes the desire to be economically secure in
every nation which was an important factor coming out the Great Depression. The last essential right
is the freedom of fear, in which one can live their life without fear of violence or hatred against them.

Comparing Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac
I. Introduction
It has never been an uncommon thing for one to retreat to nature in an attempt to find one s self, and
somewhat cliché these days is the retreat to nature to find God. Hundreds of books, essays, seminars,
and retreats devote themselves to helping one understand how to find enlightenment and healing
through connecting with nature. It is a phenomenon that transcends religious boundaries everyone,
from Buddhists to Christian Mystics to Quakers, seems to think that the key (or, at least, one of the
keys) to enlightenment lies in nature. As one may suppose, this is not a new concept. Throughout
literary history, there is a distinct trend of authors praising the virtues of nature, ... Show more content

(ibid.) In 1923, Miller met and married June Mansfield after divorcing his first wife. While this
marriage proved to be faithless, he found in her inspiration. She encouraged him to put his energy into
writing, and the passion and madness of their marriage further fuelled him ( Henry Miller 2).
Eventually, problems with June drove him to Paris without her (despite the fact that it was funded by
her), where he spent many years writing what is now considered to be the opuses of his repertoire (
Henry Miller 1). While in Paris, he wrote Tropic of Cancer which is still his most famous work which,
along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicles his life in Paris. Both books were banned in the United
States, which spawned a thirty year censorship debate that was eventually won by Miller ( Henry

The war on terror has changed how our country sees many things from travel, privacy rights, security

Habeas corpus refers to the right to get direct access ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the Constitution the federal government can unquestionably suspend the privilege of the writ of
habeas corpus if the public safety requires it during times of rebellion or invasion. The issue is
whether Congress or the president holds this power. Historical perspective on that issue in the context
of the Civil War requires a study of the actions of Congress and the president, Lincoln s defense of his
suspensions of the writ, and presidential and congressional dealings with and reactions to each other.
The relationship between Lincoln and Congress, like the power of suspension, has received limited
historical attention, with the only extensive treatment a 1907 article by University of Wisconsin
professor George Sellery.
The writ of habeas corpus provides individuals with protection against arbitrary and wrongful
imprisonment. But it does not necessarily protect other rights, such as the entitlement to a fair trial. In
our country anyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This seems to be the
case unless you are accused of terrorism, then you are held outside of the US and are not subject to the

Potsdam Student Organizational Fair Report
The Student Organizational Fair at SUNY Potsdam is essentially where a=organization clubs at

decided to check out the student organizational fair to see if there was any clubs that I would be
interested in. I didn t expect too much out of it in all honesty but I m glad that I checked it out. There
is one club in particular that I will definitely join and I wouldn t have known about it if it wasn t for

was running the table for Sigma Lambda Gamma went to my high school three years ago. I ve never

The Natural Development Of Banana Ripening Essay
Introduction Banana ripening is characterized as the process in which starch breaks down into sugar,
acid is neutralized, aromatic compounds are formed from larger organic molecules, softening occurs
due to a decrease in pectin concentration, and, finally, a change in color from the loss of chlorophyll
and its green pigment. This natural development is due to a single organic gas: ethylene. As this
hydrocarbon is produced by the fruit various enzymes are produced, catalyzing the previously stated
reactions and ripening the banana.1 Qualitatively, banana ripening can be measured by the color of the
peel, degree of hardness, and aromatic properties for this is an indicator of the level of ethylene
exposure and state of ripeness A banana unexposed to a significant amount of ethylene has a green
peel. This is due to the high concentration of chlorophyll; however, as this banana comes in contact
with more ethylene enzymes break down chlorophyll into other various compounds (carotenoids,
anthocyanin, etc.) with different pigments.2 Likewise, as ripening continues, pectin is broken down by
pectinase, softening the banana. Finally, banana ripeness can be determined by the aroma, for an
unripe banana is lacking the fragrant esters associated with a banana that has been exposed to
sufficient amounts of ethylene.1 These methods are general recognized as reliable indicators of banana
maturity; however, scientific analysis can also be conducted on the banana to determine the degree of

Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to find out if an adults could pass a middle school science test.
My hypothesis was that the 20 39 year old age group would have the highest average test score. To
determine this I had adults, in the age ranges of 20 39, 40 59, and 60+, take a 12 question middle
school science test. The results proved my hypothesis right because the 20 39 year olds age group had
the highest average test score. The 60+ age group had the second highest average test score and the 40
59 year old age group had the lowest average test score. The independent variables are the ages of the
adults, which are (20 39), (40 59), (60+). The dependent variable is the grade the participant gets on
the test based on the answer sheet for the test. The controlled variable is the 12 question middle school
science test based on middle school curriculum. If I were to do something to make the data more
accurate I would to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Artists And Creators Of Violence
The artists and creators of violence in various forms of media have the ability to shape how people
perceive violence as an art. While most people that art is used as a form of aestheticism, often the
creators attempt to send a message through their work. Maggie Nelson explains in her work, Great to
Watch, that the art of cruelty aestheticizes violence in order to invoke a feeling of guilt as they watch
others suffering. People use violence as an art of expression to create a moral or idea of through their
story. Nelson points out that violence is complex and she demonstrates this with her mentioning of
Abu Ghraib which she implies that she wishes violence was true and simple. She also mentions that
the reason violence is used to send messages is because people often find that being bad and
committing malice acts is an easy way of life. She explains that people find that the dark side and dark
emotions take over and being good is difficult. She explains that there is a pleasure and desire through
violence. Nelson reflects on the idea that people admire the idea of violence and its explicitness and its
ability to show that not everything is as perfect as seems. In her quote, The moral of this dichotomoy
is that distraction by banal obviates a necessary focus on the all too real calamitous , she explains that
the beauty of violence that people create in their stories shows that the duality of people when dealing
with moral issues, shows that people have both a dark and

The Prisoner s Dilemma is an example of game theory; a game of cooperation in which an individual
ends up considering that the best way to maximize their payoff is through non cooperation. The
Prisoner s dilemma is structured in a way that both parties decide to protect themselves from the
players; As a result of following a purely logical thought process to help oneself, both participants find
themselves in a worse state than if they had cooperated with each other in the decision making process
(Investopedia). Through the process of Prisoner s Dilemma, people can predict and understand some
of the possible actions of both parties in an agreement as well as the consequences of their possible
decisions. One example of Prisoner s Dilemma is the hostage massacre incident in 2010 that greatly
affected the international relation of the Philippine and Hong Kong government.
The Manila Hostage Crisis was a massacre incident that took place on August 23, 2010. It occurred
when Rolando Mendoza, a dismissed former national inspector in the Philippine National Police,

Midterm 1
1. Compare and contrast the primordialist with the instrumentalist/circumstantialist approaches that
provide an understanding of the concept of Ethnicity? What is the constructionist perspective?
According to constructionism, how do the elites view ethnicity? (Use Introduction from Hutchinson
and Smith book Ethnicity and the excerpt of chapters from Cornell and Hartmann that will be posted
on blackboard. NB: I used Cornell and Hartmann s book Ethnicity and Race for my class lecture on
approaches to ethnicity.)
In Ethnicity by John Hutchinson and Anthony Smith identify two existing camps of ethnicity:
primordialist and instrumentalist/circumstantialist. The term priomordialist in terms of ethnicity was
fathered by Edward Shils, a notable sociologist. Shils sought to differentiate various social bonds
personal, primordial, sacred and civil ties and to demonstrate how even in contemporary, civic
societies other types of social bonding existed (Hutchinson and Smith ). After Shils coined the concept
of primordialist, late anthropologist, Clifford Greetz advanced the subject and spoke of the
overpowering and ineffable quality attaching to certain kinds of tie, which the participants tended to
see as exterior, coercive, and given. Greetz further emphasized that the catalyst to an effective and
successful modern state is the drive for personal identity a fundamental basis of primordial ties. By

The Food Guide Pyramid Is Good
The food guide pyramid plays an important role in the health education of the majority of people in
the United States. It is meant to guide the general healthy public in how to eat healthy to stay healthy.
It includes a wide variety of foods to provide a healthy range of nutrients that are needed daily. The
food guide pyramid is an excellent way to educate the public on how to eat healthy. The new food
guide pyramid also includes exercise. This is a way to universally educate people. The food guide

people to understand what they should be eating. The food guide pyramid is meant for people without

(Davis and Saltos, 1999, p37) The first edition of these guidelines came out in 1980. The Dietary

the vegetable group the fruit group; the milk, yogurt, and the cheese group; and the meat. Poultry, fish,
dry beans, eggs, and nuts group, and recommends sparing use of a sixth food group fats, oils, and
sweets. (Davis and Saltos, 1999, p37) This is very close to what has been used since then. In 1988 the
groups were formed into a picture that could show what they were trying to say. A pyramid was chose
with the smallest amount of foods in a group at the top of the pyramid and the largest group at the
bottom of the pyramid. The second editions of the dietary guidelines came out in 1985, the third in
1990, and the fourth in 1995. After 1995 there was a mandate that required that a new edition came
out every 5 years. The guidelines have not changed drastically over the years. (Davis and Saltos,
1999) Furthermore, scientists had found little evidence that a high intake of carbohydrates is
beneficial, since 1992 more and more research has shown that the USDA pyramid is grossly flawed.
By promoting the consumption of all complex carbohydrates and eschewing all fats and oils, the
pyramid provides misleading guidance. In short, not all fats are bad for you, and by no means are all

Virus detection software must be updated on a regular basis to help protect honesty of systems.
Hardware and passwords have to be changed sporadically and carefully to protect from unapproved

established for systems having delicate and/or confidential information. With accurate execution, anti
fraud hotlines can be very helpful in preventing and detecting fraud and removing inadequacies in
your business. It prompts your employees that even though management is not everywhere, employees
and stakeholders function as the eyes and ears of management, giving your company an added layer of
protection. The first step to implementing a fraud hotline is marketing. When marketing the hotline
first one needs to sit down with employees to discuss the prpgram. Employees do not want to feel like
someone is out to get them. Using posters with the hotline number can be very helpful. Employees
should be reminded of the purpose of the hotline and when they should call. The second step is stress
confidentiality. It is very important to let employees know that the information given to the hotline
will remain confidential. The hotline should be staffed with live operators who have been trained in
these types of calls.

Dumb Jeocks Stereotypes
When a young person develops into a somewhat defined personality, they are certain to meet a person
or few who re eccentric about sports. These eccentrics are dubbed jocks ; more specifically, dumb
jocks . These jocks are defined as sports enthusiasts; people who participate in vigorous activities to a
high degree but lack the interest and/or capabilities of intellectual activities and comprehension.
Basically, this stereotype arbors the love to play the game but are dumb as wood. But isn t the
stereotype s definition a bit much?
Many would think that the stereotype of the jock is either the buffed up sport enthusiasts that are close
to weight lifters or the overconfident (insert sport) player that only knows how to play the game. In

For example, a student for his/her senior year has been recognized as the MVP (most valuable player).
Upon being recognized he has been chosen for a certain amount of money for college/university. Most
college/universities (not including community college) cost a lot of money to pay, so the student must
do well in school to get the awards and/or sign up for financial aid so that they can pay for tuition
(along with a few other things). Jocks know this, and they must play well, as a team, to get the

The Rise Of The Mid Size Farmer Essay
In an increasingly globalized world, productivity and efficiency is crucial to the survival of
agricultural businesses. Today, a smaller number of farms produce an increasingly larger amount of
produce. Since 1920, the average farm size has grown over 300 percent (Ikred). Productivity is at an
all time high, and in recent years the U.S. has had a tremendous increase in international agricultural
trade (Brown, 2011, p. 168). For consumers around the world, this means cheaper, more accessible
food, which is crucial for a rising world population with limited resources. However, the mid size
farmer is diminishing in number. We will look at what trends are causing the downfall of the mid size
farmer. What this means for rural communities, and whether or not these trends are inevitable.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 3.2 million farmers operate the nation s 2.1
million farms. Although only 2 percent of the farms in America are operated by large corporations
(2012 Census Highlights), they produce a considerable amount of the nation s food supply. Large
scale operation enables these major corporations to cut production cost, allowing these businesses to
sell their product a lower market price. These low prices make it very difficult for smaller farm
operations to compete. Inability to compete causes many traditional farmers and farm families to look
for additional means of income, or even completely different means of employment.
Another trend driving

Bear Sterns Rise and Fall
The rise and fall of Bear Stearns
Introduction
Bear Stearns, the fifth largest investment bank in US, was established as an equity trading house in
1923 by Joseph Bear, Robert Stearns, and Harold Mayer. Its headquarters was located in New York
City with offices in the major US cities, South America, Europe, and Asia, employing more than
13,500 people around the world. The firm survived every major crisis like the Great Depression,
World War II, the 1987 market crash, and the 9/11 terrorists attack and never had a losing quarter in its
history until December 2007, when Bear Stearns announced the first loss for about $854 million.

The result was a private bailout by the major financial firms and supervised by the Federal Reserve.
Bankers Trust, Barclays, Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Merrill
Lynch, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Salomon Smith Barney, and UBS agreed to contribute with $ 300
million each one, while Société Générale invested $125 million and Lehman Brothers and Paribas did
the same thing with $100 million.
The only bank that refused the join the syndicate was Bear Stearns. In the Bear Stearns case, the
sudden collapse of the firm and the impossibility to calculate the risk of taking Bear s mortgage
holdings forced the Federal Reserve to be involved actively into the bailout instead of the advisory
role it took in the LTCM case 10 years earlier.
1.4 What could Bear Stearns have done differently to avoid this fate?
In the early 2000 s, after the Federal Reserve dropped the interest rate and raised the money supply
trying to control the crisis produced by 9/11 terrorist attacks, the firm s directors should have been
more disciplined with the financial strategies, especially the ones related with hedge funds who made
poor quality investments. Furthermore, the failure to evaluate the risk, to diversify the portfolio, and to
control the use of high leveraging was driven by the need to justify the enormous

  • 2. The Era Of Andrew Jackson Sedona Swanner History 1301 Mr. Spence November 10, 2015 The Era of Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, elected in eighteen twenty eight. Prior to his presidency Andrew Jackson was well known and favored for his success against the British in the war of eighteen twelve. Upon election, Andrew Jackson became known as the people s president gaining the majority of electoral votes over his opponent John quincy Adams.Throughout his presidency many events occurred that would shape America as a nation. During his time as President Andrew Jackson was both favored and hated by many individuals. His actions pleased certain groups of people, but would also cause for a loss of support amongst Americans. Jackson s legacy would leave behind a strong willed group of supporters, known as the Democrat party, and the creation of opposed individuals known as the Whig party as well. His presidency would be viewed as time of improvements to some, but to others who strongly opposed his presidency, it would be seen as a time for unjust tariffs and conflict. Jackson s presidency would be characterized by key events such as the Indian removal act, the nullification crisis, and the dispute known as the war against the bank, that would alter the nation forever. One of the many acts put into place during Andrew Jackson s time as president includes the highly controversial Indian Removal Act. The Indian removal act was signed and put into place by President ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Characteristics Of Sympathism In Bartleby, The Scrivener Nothing is more patience trying than watching paint slowly dry, the one exception to this sentiment however, maybe the patience of a wise kind man being tested to his absolute limit. This is certainly apparent as you envelope yourself into the story of Bartleby, The Scrivener . It is for several reasons that we have sympathised with the character Lawyer . For one, Bartleby, soon after being hired, began refusing to do the duties required of him for his job. The Lawyer would let this behaviour slip despite complaints from the other workers of the office. Secondly during the story there is a point when the Lawyer realizes Bartleby has been squatting at his firm. He again chooses not to punish or scold, but rather offer him a place to live. And for some reason Bartleby again says no. Lastly we get to the point of Bartleby being placed in jail. At this point most people s sympathies might have gone out the window, but The Lawyer is no ordinary man in this aspect. He still feels guilty and even decides to go see Bartleby. It is in these following paragraphs that we will convey our sympathies toward The Lawyer s relentless attempts to help Bartleby. At first, the illusion of a good work ethic is put forth by Bartleby. Nevertheless this commitment is short lived and he begins refusing to do his work stating I would prefer not to anytime he is asked to review his copies documents. This is something that The Lawyer chooses not to condemn at first out of some sort of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Brain Case Work Case Study Case Study One: Anne During the first case study, Anne uses many various brain areas and structures. I chose to focus on the Occipital Lobe, the Hypothalamus, and the Frontal Lobe. The Occipital Lobe is used when Anne looks outside and at the easel she is painting on. She must see the objects she is replicating as well as where she is painting. Another brain area that Anne uses while painting is the Hypothalamus. This brain structure motivates her to paint what she sees in her garden. The last brain area that I want to reference is the Frontal Lobe. Anne s Frontal Lobe allows her to move her body from the window, to the easel, and her hand from the paint, to the canvas. Case Study Two: Eddie During Eddie s wrestling match he uses his brain ... • 5. Louis XIV Essay examples Louis XIV After being ruled by a prime minister for so long, France needed some changes. That is exactly what Louis the XIV would bring to France. In an age of separation, Louis wanted to start a unification process. He started this by giving himself sole power and also only having one religion for the country. The king is always the center of attention good or bad. Louis was prepared to take the good with the bad, and handled it well. He emphasized the king as the center of attention. While some see him as egotistical and greedy, Louis was one king who knew how to make improvements. At four years and eight months, Louis XIV became King. His mother, Anne of Austria, ruled until he could take the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many think he left France worse off than it started because of the way he left the treasury. It was thought that he spent the money only on himself, leaving the peasants with no money. It is also said that he spent the money on building his residences (Versailles and Marly) and supporting his luxurious lifestyle. Another argument brought up is how he was so egotistical. One reason for his being egotistical was the fact that he was thought of as God Given because the court was hoping that Louis XIII would have a child before he died. People talk about how he compared himself to the sun. As ruler Louis, thought of himself as the sun, which meant he was the center of the kingdom and his subjects rotated around him. Some see this as incredibly egotistical and thought that made him less of a ruler. One aspect of his being the sun was the fact that his bedroom was placed in the middle of the castle; he was always center of attention, as the sun would be. The other reason people think he was a negative influence on France was the fact that as soon as the last Prime minister died, Louis made himself the ruler. He decided to make all the decisions by himself, with no help. Some think this was a bad idea because he had no previous ruling experience by himself. These same people were angered when Louis re established Catholicism, nullifying the Edict of Nantes. Some of the people of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fantasy Football Discourse Community Essay Fantasy Football as a Discourse Community According to NFL.com, Fantasy football puts you and your friends in the front office and on the sidelines as you play as the General Manager and Coach of your own hand picked team. You choose your team through a draft system from a list of the best players in the National Football League and they compete on a week by week basis for your team. You set your lineup each week during the season and watch as touchdowns, field goals, yards gained, interceptions, sacks, blocked field goals, and a lot more factors generate fantasy points for your team. A fantasy football league can t function effectively without all of the different forms of communication. The quick access emailing, vigorous texting, calling, face to face video communication and the open message boards are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Which is why we believe that fantasy football functions effectively as a discourse community. Scholar John Swales has done a lot of research and work to help others effectively understand the concepts of discourse communities. John Swales proposes six defining characteristics that are necessary and sufficient for identifying a group of individuals as a discourse community. Swales very first step says a discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals (Swales 220) which are achieved in a variety of ways including the mechanisms of intercommunications among its members (Swales 221). A discourse community utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims (Swales 221). With these given characteristics we believe that fantasy football functions as a discourse community among different men and woman. Although fantasy football is not an academic discourse community, it can certainly help add to the question if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Aryan National Liberation Front Arthur Buzz Hirsch, a St. Joseph News Press reporter, conducted a background investigation on the Aryan National Liberation Front (ANLF). This group is one of white supremacist and anti government ideology. This group, according to confidential sources, is involved in harassment and tax evasion. Two incidents, a bombing on February 12th (which two men have been arrested for) and a shooting that took place on March 10th, are believed to be connected to the ANLF. However, a confidential sources says the ANLF has nothing to do with the shooting. Recently, police and a member of the prosecutor s office showed up at the News Press offices with a warrant, demanding Hirsch to turn over all notes, research materials, and recordings relating to the ANLF. Also, he was urged to identify his sources. Hirsch refused to do both. Whether or not the prosecuting office can demand Hirsch to turn over any information depends on court precedents and current laws. In Branzburg v. Hayes (1972), the Supreme Court decided the First Amendment did not grant reportorial privilege in the court. This means journalists and other members of the press cannot use freedom of speech as a defense in order to not testify. This includes if a source was meant to be confidential. Lower courts interpreted Branzburg differently. In the case of Branzburg, reportorial privilege was unnecessary. Later with Zerilli v. Smith (1981), the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that reportorial privilege existed. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Jane Eyre Development Jane Eyre follows the moral development of a young scared girl to a strong and unwavering woman. Through each stage of her development was an imperious male character. Jane first encounters John Reed, a spoiled and obscene person. She shortly after encounters the intensely bitter Mr. Brocklehurst. Mr. Brocklehurst seemed like a good man at first but proved to be far from that. Next was Edward Rochester. While he was by no means as harsh as John Reed or Mr.Brocklehurst he was cruel in his own way. Finally, the last strong male character was St. John Rivers. He is cold hearted and repressed. The exact opposite of the fiery Rochester. These characters vary greatly and all had an immense impact on Eyre s development along with BrontĂ« s construction ... Instead, her entire life up until she arrives at Misselthwaite Manor has been a harsh reality: a child abandoned and neglected by her mother as she is left under the care of servants, later losing everything she has previously known due to an outbreak of cholera. Narration Despite the similarities between Catcher in the Rye and The Secret Garden, the narrators of the works vastly differ. The narrator does not recount events passively, but instead inserts his or her own voice and opinions such as how Mary was a tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived into the narrative (Burnett 1). In a sense, the narrator serves as a guide in Mary s venture into adolescence during a period when Mary herself may not fully comprehend her transformation. To contextualize this change, the narrator often turns to physical descriptions as opposed to mental ones. As the children mature and develop, their appearance and vitality heal as they progressively begin to resemble regular, healthy children. As mentioned by the narrator, [Colin] was coming alive with the garden (Burnett 202). Despite the reliability of the narrator, Mary s personal growth is omitted from the narrative and readers are left with only the physical development and dialogue between characters. These changes did not take place until after Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote a famous speech that closely looked at the essential freedoms and rights of each person in the world, the Four Freedoms. Freedom of speech and worship, along with freedom from want and fear, were the topics of this great speech. People compared Roosevelt s speech to some of the other more influential and well known proclamations known during that era: including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Magna Carta, and even the Ten Commandments. The power and confidence this address held spread beyond the United States just as Roosevelt hoped, giving other nations an example of what could be if there was peace. The Four Freedoms speech became a universal proclamation that granted and encouraged freedom everywhere, even while denying those same human rights to American citizens. Freedom of speech and worship are two rights in which most people are accustomed to. As they are laid out in the first amendment of the Constitution, any citizen has the right to speak their mind and worship how they would like. Freedom from want describes the desire to be economically secure in every nation which was an important factor coming out the Great Depression. The last essential right is the freedom of fear, in which one can live their life without fear of violence or hatred against them. Roosevelt s Four Freedoms speech ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1923, Miller met and married June Mansfield after divorcing his first wife. While this marriage proved to be faithless, he found in her inspiration. She encouraged him to put his energy into writing, and the passion and madness of their marriage further fuelled him ( Henry Miller 2). Eventually, problems with June drove him to Paris without her (despite the fact that it was funded by her), where he spent many years writing what is now considered to be the opuses of his repertoire ( Henry Miller 1). While in Paris, he wrote Tropic of Cancer which is still his most famous work which, along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicles his life in Paris. Both books were banned in the United States, which spawned a thirty year censorship debate that was eventually won by Miller ( Henry Miller 1). • 24. The Natural Development Of Banana Ripening Essay Introduction Banana ripening is characterized as the process in which starch breaks down into sugar, acid is neutralized, aromatic compounds are formed from larger organic molecules, softening occurs due to a decrease in pectin concentration, and, finally, a change in color from the loss of chlorophyll and its green pigment. This natural development is due to a single organic gas: ethylene. As this hydrocarbon is produced by the fruit various enzymes are produced, catalyzing the previously stated reactions and ripening the banana.1 Qualitatively, banana ripening can be measured by the color of the peel, degree of hardness, and aromatic properties for this is an indicator of the level of ethylene exposure and state of ripeness A banana unexposed to a significant amount of ethylene has a green peel. This is due to the high concentration of chlorophyll; however, as this banana comes in contact with more ethylene enzymes break down chlorophyll into other various compounds (carotenoids, anthocyanin, etc.) with different pigments.2 Likewise, as ripening continues, pectin is broken down by pectinase, softening the banana. Finally, banana ripeness can be determined by the aroma, for an unripe banana is lacking the fragrant esters associated with a banana that has been exposed to sufficient amounts of ethylene.1 These methods are general recognized as reliable indicators of banana maturity; however, scientific analysis can also be conducted on the banana to determine the degree of ... While most people that art is used as a form of aestheticism, often the creators attempt to send a message through their work. People use violence as an art of expression to create a moral or idea of through their story. Nelson points out that violence is complex and she demonstrates this with her mentioning of Abu Ghraib which she implies that she wishes violence was true and simple. She explains that people find that the dark side and dark emotions take over and being good is difficult. She explains that there is a pleasure and desire through violence. Shils sought to differentiate various social bonds personal, primordial, sacred and civil ties and to demonstrate how even in contemporary, civic societies other types of social bonding existed (Hutchinson and Smith ). After Shils coined the concept of primordialist, late anthropologist, Clifford Greetz advanced the subject and spoke of the overpowering and ineffable quality attaching to certain kinds of tie, which the participants tended to see as exterior, coercive, and given. Poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts group, and recommends sparing use of a sixth food group fats, oils, and sweets. (Davis and Saltos, 1999, p37) This is very close to what has been used since then. In 1988 the groups were formed into a picture that could show what they were trying to say. A pyramid was chose with the smallest amount of foods in a group at the top of the pyramid and the largest group at the bottom of the pyramid. The second editions of the dietary guidelines came out in 1985, the third in 1990, and the fourth in 1995. After 1995 there was a mandate that required that a new edition came out every 5 years. The guidelines have not changed drastically over the years. (Davis and Saltos, 1999) Furthermore, scientists had found little evidence that a high intake of carbohydrates is beneficial, since 1992 more and more research has shown that the USDA pyramid is grossly flawed. By promoting the consumption of all complex carbohydrates and eschewing all fats and oils, the pyramid provides misleading guidance. • 35. The Rise Of The Mid Size Farmer Essay In an increasingly globalized world, productivity and efficiency is crucial to the survival of agricultural businesses. Today, a smaller number of farms produce an increasingly larger amount of produce. Since 1920, the average farm size has grown over 300 percent (Ikred). Productivity is at an all time high, and in recent years the U.S. has had a tremendous increase in international agricultural trade (Brown, 2011, p. 168). For consumers around the world, this means cheaper, more accessible food, which is crucial for a rising world population with limited resources. However, the mid size farmer is diminishing in number. We will look at what trends are causing the downfall of the mid size farmer. What this means for rural communities, and whether or not these trends are inevitable. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 3.2 million farmers operate the nation s 2.1 million farms. Although only 2 percent of the farms in America are operated by large corporations (2012 Census Highlights), they produce a considerable amount of the nation s food supply. Large scale operation enables these major corporations to cut production cost, allowing these businesses to sell their product a lower market price. These low prices make it very difficult for smaller farm operations to compete. Inability to compete causes many traditional farmers and farm families to look for additional means of income, or even completely different means of employment. Another trend driving ... The result was a private bailout by the major financial firms and supervised by the Federal Reserve. Bankers Trust, Barclays, Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Salomon Smith Barney, and UBS agreed to contribute with $ 300 million each one, while SociĂ©tĂ© GĂ©nĂ©rale invested $125 million and Lehman Brothers and Paribas did the same thing with $100 million. The only bank that refused the join the syndicate was Bear Stearns. In the Bear Stearns case, the sudden collapse of the firm and the impossibility to calculate the risk of taking Bear s mortgage holdings forced the Federal Reserve to be involved actively into the bailout instead of the advisory role it took in the LTCM case 10 years earlier. 1.4 What could Bear Stearns have done differently to avoid this fate? In the early 2000 s, after the Federal Reserve dropped the interest rate and raised the money supply trying to control the crisis produced by 9/11 terrorist attacks, the firm s directors should have been more disciplined with the financial strategies, especially the ones related with hedge funds who made poor quality investments. Furthermore, the failure to evaluate the risk, to diversify the portfolio, and to control the use of high leveraging was driven by the need to justify the enormous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
