Main Features Of Oligopoly
Oligopoly:
Oligopoly is a type of imperfect competition, wherein there are few sellers dealing either in
homogeneous or differentiated products. The term oligopoly has been derived from the two Greek
words, oligoi means few and poly means control. Thus, it means the control of the few organisations
in the market.
For example, oligopoly in India exists in the aviation industry where there are just a few players, such
as Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, etc. All these airlines depend on each other for setting their
pricing policies. This is because the prices are effected by the price of the competitors products.
Features and Pricing Strategy among oligopolistic firms: o Existence of few sellers:
One of the primary features of oligopoly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This implies that organisations may either produce homogeneous products, such as cement, asphalt,
concrete and bricks, or differentiated products such as an automobile. If organisations produce
homogeneous products, it is said to be pure oligopoly.
o Impediments in entry:
Other important characteristics of oligopolistic competition is that neither organisations cannot easily
enter the market; nor they can make an exit from the market. The reasons for difficult entry in the
market are various legal, social and technological barriers. This also implies that the existing
organisations have a complete control over the market.
o Enhanced role of government:
Under oligopolistic market structure, the government has a greater role as it acts as a guard to anti
competitive behaviours of the oligopolists. It is often observed that oligopolists may engage in the
illegal practice of collusion, where they together make production and pricing decisions. Oligopolists
may start acting as a single organisation and further increase prices and profits. Thus, in such
environment, the government requires to keep a watch on such activities to curb the illegal

Arab Uprising Essay
How has the rise of social media technologies affected political stabilities in the Middle East?
Background of the study
Middle East countries have been faced by a challenge where leaders lock information. Locking
information has resulted to limitation on the flow of information inside Middle East and to the
external world. Out of this challenge, democracy in the Middle East has been suppressed and citizens
left to suffer. Leaders refuse to listen to the people they rule and dictatorship followed course. This
reached to a situation whereby citizens organize themselves with an objective to protest in their
countries. This has resulted to not less than two dictators being overthrown. Two dictators from Egypt
and Tunisia have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New technologies and ideas have been developing and the benefits of these developments have been
coordinated with the world systems thoroughly. Some changes that have been taking place such as
social media advancement have fully impacted the way lives and the world operates.
The growth of the social mass media, the new developments of mass communications that have been
welcomed into the world have thoroughly brought about restructuring the perspectives of human
beings especially in the Middle East. The rise of the mass media; magazines, books, motion pictures,
television and newspapers have affected most aspects of human life especially in the Middle East
countries (Kamlipour 1997). United States media coverage of activities in the countries of the Middle

scholars from different parts of the world have been carrying out studies and analysis on the subject
(Kamlipour 1997). Many scholars have specialized in writing books and articles with the aim of
informing people concerning the coups, conflicts, terrorism activities, uprisings and disasters that have
been taking place in the Middle East. Many people have been able to access information on the wild

Mterials Used for Turbine Blades in Jet Engines
Turbine blades used in jet engines can be made from such materials as nickel based superalloys. We
can, in principle, even use ceramic materials such as zirconia or other alloys based on steels. In some
cases, the blades may have to be coated with a thermal barrier coating
(TBC) to minimize exposure of the blade material to high temperatures. What design parameters
would you consider in selecting a material for the turbine blade and for the coating that would work
successfully in a turbine engine? Note that different parts of the engine are exposed to different
temperatures, and not all blades are exposed to relatively high operating temperatures.

Media s Promotion of Consumerism
Media s Promotion of Consumerism Demian Estrada The advertising industry spends $12 billion per
year on ads targeted to children, bombarding young audiences with persuasive messages through
media such as television and the Internet. The average child is exposed to more than 40,000 TV
commercials a year, according to studies. And ads are reaching children through new media
technologies and even in schools with corporate sponsored educational materials and product
placements in students textbooks. American Psychological Association(APA) From the moment you

To explain this problematic issue the media entities have come up with some questions like; What do
consumers need? Is it a real or false need? Can we come up with a common and definitive set of
universal human needs? What is it that consumers really need? Is it perhaps in order to stay alive?
These questions can lead to different answers that in essence come down to particular human
behaviors. (Colin Campbell 282). One example of human behavior with regards to the food we eat is
that most of the world s population eats more that they really need to maintain proper nutrition and
healthy lives. Another is shown in the types of vehicles we drive. Is it really necessary to drive a huge
4 wheel drive, fuel inefficient SUV around the city or on a commute to work? Furthermore, is it really
necessary to have 50 pairs of shoes? In order to specify some one s needs it is essential to have a
comprehensive knowledge of that person s background and ambitions and their needs and desires. The
media is creating desires that we confuse with needs. (Colin Campbell 280 283). The most effective
ads are ones that we don t even recognize as advertisements. Like ads we see in television series,
news, movies and even on clothing. We are manipulated quickly by common objects, characters, or
ideas that are transformed into things that all Americans desire, hope for, fear, believe the most. (Jack

Kennedy’s New Frontier Program Essay
As the President elect of the United States in 1960, John F. Kennedy aspired, to accomplish much
during his presidency. Kennedy confidently called his initiative The New Frontier comprised of
numerous major challenges. Some of the challenges were boosting the United States economy by
ending a recession and promote growth in the economy, promote aid to third world countries by
establishing the Peace Corps, and then transport men and women overseas to assist emerging countries
in acquiring their own necessities. Additional challenges for the Kennedy administration were to build

Nevertheless, President Kennedy, felt very strong about his most profound New Frontier vision
Project Apollo in which the United States would send human beings specifically to leave American
footprints on the moon. The President secured funding for NASA and challenged the United States to
place an astronaut on the Moon by 1970, after the Soviet Union launched a cosmonaut into outer
space in 1961. In the forefront, of Kennedy s initiative was the prospect of first time co operation
between the United States and the Soviet Union beginning in space literally. Ultimately, designed to
spread around this world and ending the Cold War (Hoagland, 2008).

In signing the Alliance of Progress, in 1961, Kennedy allocated $20 billion in funds to Latin America
for a ten year foreign aid plan. Latin America s exchange involved legislation revising unfair tax
policies, and agricultural land reforms, in hopes to avoid a political Castro style revolution outlook.

Waitakere Range Research Paper
The Waitakere Ranges are home to many flora and fauna. These plants and animals make up the
communities within their ecosystem. They interact with each other through competition and various
relationships. In the Waitakere Ranges, there are several habitats organisms live in:
Forests and shrub lands
Freshwater wetlands, lakes and streams
Coastal wetlands, dunes, and estuarine tidal flats and channels
Urban area
The populations of each habitat vary, as they would be dependent on abiotic factors such as: light,
temperature, water and soil.
Within communities, organisms compete for limited resources (food, space, mates, shelter). 613 of our
native species (plants, birds, fish), compete with 240 introduced plant species, 19 introduced bird
species, 9 introduced mammals and 2 amphibians. It is estimated that we have lost 30 native bird
species due to this competition. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next, primary consumers such as snails and weta eat producers, consuming their nutrients. Secondary
consumers, such as Kereru, Tui and Long Tailed Bats then consume these insects, with energy passing
through the food chain to them. Tertiary consumers such as stoats and possums are pests to our native
species as they are threats to populations of our native birds.
Pests in the Waitakere ranges include wasps, mould, rats, goats and pigs. These species are considered
predators and parasites, these species benefit while their prey species is harmed. Wasps and mould kill
native trees for shelter and food. Rats, goats and pigs prey on native species of birds, insects and
fauna. Predation by introduced species of native species both threatens native populations, but also the
balance of the ecosystem. With predatory niches being taken, these pests not only threaten their prey,
but also native

Geography’s Impact on Culture and Society Essays
Geography s Impact on Culture and Society When studying ancient civilizations and the beginning
societies in the world, the geography has shaped its story significantly. Depending on the location of
the civilization society, whether or not water was nearby was crucial for its survival. With trade
networks, metals, foods, and languages were spread. Weapons were able to be formed from these
metals which led to a stronger military. Mountain ranges formed the boundaries of civilizations.
Geography greatly impacted Asia, Africa and Europe.

Even though these urban city dwellers were more advanced technologically and socially, they were
not prepared in a military aspect to defend against the mounted hordes of the steppe. The lowlands did
not have enough grassland to support a large herd of horsemen, so the nomadic people ended up
adapting to the culture of China, the Middle East, and India, which they conquered. 1
Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia was home to some of the earliest known civilizations. The name Mesopotamia comes
from two Greek words meaning the land between two rivers , referring to the Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers. These rivers brought a large amount of freshwater to the region and by getting access to this
water provided a new way of life: agriculture. Irrigation led to harvesting crops of barley, wheat, and
peas. This then increased the food supplies and was able to support a quickly growing population .
Because the land between the rivers was fertile, this provided sufficient soil and crop growing.
Because of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, travel was made easier by travelling by boat rather than on
land. Trade routes became much more useful for trading agriculture and communication and language.
With trading in place, societies began to join together for the common goal of living life. Importing
and exporting goods was a common occurrence in

Interpretation Of Love In Songs Of Solomon By William...
Introduction
Take all my loves, my love, yea, take them all: What hast thou then more than thou hadst before? No
love, my love, that thou mayst true love call All mine was thine before thou hadst this more. The
preceding poem, written by William Shakespeare, tells of a lover wanting to give all their love to their
lover. Similarly, the writer of Songs of Solomon tells of giving all the love to their lover. Through this
writing, different aspects of the Songs will be addressed, along with the defense of the various forms
of the Songs. Finality will show how the Songs fit with the church of today.
Song of Solomon Brief list of the different ways the Song is Interpreted
Kathryn Harding, Biblical Interpretation, I sought him but I did not find him : The Elusive Lover in

insight into their interpretation of the Songs. One source focuses on the male lead of the Song and the
aspect of power from Cheryl Exum who discussed, the male protagonist s concerns about the power
dynamics between himself and his lover in the Song; in her totality he finds her overwhelming, even
intimidating, and so he fragments her, considers her little by little, piece by piece, in his waṣfs.
Subsequently, another source emphasizes how can one have sexual intimacy if they are apart from one
another. This is referenced from the writing by Edward Burne Jones who states:

A Look at Orson Scott Card s Famous
Ender s Game by Anna Colby
Don t grow up too fast, a mother might have once cooed to her little one. Not anymore. Children are
tested. If they re worth anything, they re taken to Battle School, where they train for war. Nearly a
century ago, the Buggers attacked Earth. Now humans thirst for revenge. Their goal: to exterminate
the race, no matter how many little kids minds they have to break in the process. When Ender Wiggin
is pulled into this conflict, he finds potential in himself to become a great commander. But is really the
life he wants?

When I first read this book, I had several reactions. Gee, that was depressing, was the first. The second
was, I ll bet that son of a gun, Card, put some symbolism up in that book. I wonder where it is? It s
taken me a while, but I think I ve figured it out. First, I want you to ask yourself: what is a game? In
some cases, a game is another place for people to go to escape the bores of everyday life. In other
cases, a game is the problem. The latter is the case for poor Ender. Games play a major part in this
story. So what is the author trying to portray here? There is a fine line between games and reality, and
the moment the line disappears, things get super screwy. This game knows too much about me. This
game tells filthy lies (page 119). Games played throughout the story include Buggers and astronauts
and the Battle School competitions, but I just want to focus on the last game Ender plays: the actual
war. Spoiler alert! I tried to avoid spoilers, I really did, but you can kill me after you finish reading this
article. During this last game, Ender leads his team in what appears to be an ordinary battle

Connections Between The Legend Of Echo And Narcissus
An African proverb once said If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. In
today s society, the need to belong, or to feel as though you have people to turn to is so basic yet so
critical to mental and physical health we may as well put it right up there with thirst and hunger. Just
as we drink to quench our thirst and eat to soothe a growling stomach, we can also starve from social
isolation. I believe that meaningful connections are relationships in which people bond on a whole
other level than just friendship, they connect the missing pieces in one another s lives. However, some
opinions may differ on this topic, for example Mark Bauerlein composes a novel about the
disadvantages of select connections as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, he believes to be worthy for non and worshiped by all. He enjoyed attention, praise and
envy. In Narcissus s eyes nobody matched him Living in the mindset that you are superior to others
can leave you not only lonely but also drowned in regret. People will grow tired of your behaviour and
pull away, stretching your friendship further and further apart only until one day, it snaps. They
wanted him to know what it felt like to love and never be loved Echo is not just the female counterpart
of Narcissus, as it is not a series of opposed elements, the most important of which is that she loves
him and he did not. Echo is the equivalent of the reflection that captivates Narcissus eyes He cried in
frustration. As he did so Echo also cried. This statement is an example that true friends will always be
by your side, through thick and thin with you. Even if you have not treated them necessarily right. It
also refers to a sense of uniqueness, the belief that few others have anything in common with oneself
and that one can only be understood by a few or very special people, in this case it is Echo. This myth
seeks to explain that without bonds and connections, you can become miserable and mourn the

Essay on Merchant of Venice
Mercy v. Justice Old Testament v. New Testament
While the conflict between justice and mercy plays a key role in determining the outcome of The
Merchant of Venice, this conflict is even more important because it provides a setting for the contrast
between the rigid law and rules of the Old Testament and the concepts of mercy and forgiveness as
taught by Christ in the New Testament. It is in the climactic trial scene that The Duke, hoping Shylock
will excuse Antonio s penalty, asks him, How shall thou hope for mercy rend ring none? He is
referring to expectations of judgment in the afterlife. However, so is Shylock, when he counters, What
judgment shall I dread doing no wrong? This exchange perfectly presents this conflict between ...

Shylock, for his part, has indeed become fierce in his desire to extract vengeance by forcing the death
of Antonio.
The trial scene is constructed from a Christian perspective, and it highlights the dichotomy of Old
Testament legalism as opposed to the New Testament gospel of grace and forgiveness. The Duke,
Bassanio and finally Portia, all plead with Shylock to show mercy, but Shylock s hate has made him
immune to reason, as he is totally absorbed by a passion for revenge.
The Merchant of Venice draws upon laws and rules of Venice and those stipulated in contracts and
wills. Two things are emphasized when the trial begins. Firstly, it is clear that Shylock will not show
any mercy and relinquish his right to a pound of Antonio s flesh as stipulated in the bond, and
secondly, that Shylock has the rule of law on his side. Antonio himself says, The Duke cannot deny
the course of law: For the commoditie that strangers have / With us in Venice, if it be denied, Will
much impeach the justice of the State, Since that the trade and profit of the city / Consisteth of all
Nations. Shylock demands the strict interpretation of those laws, and seeks justice in its most severe
and uncompromised form. He demands Antonio s death for forfeiting his bond. quot; The pound of
flesh which I demand of him / Is dearly bought, tis mine and I will have it quot;.
In response to Shylock s Old Testament cry for bloody justice Portia answers with a speech that rivals

Charge Decay Of A Powder Surface Will Partly Decay
3.5. Storage
Over time, the charge accumulated on a powder surface will partly decay (dissipate) (Malave Lopez
and Peleg, 1985). Charge decay is a complex phenomenon that has been measured by different
techniques (Paasi et al., 2001). The timescale for electrostatic charge decay is an important factor. For
example, there will be a higher probability of considerable charge build up on the material when
charge decay occurs slowly. The charge decay rate is a measure of the rate at which the electrostatic
charge present on the surface of a material can migrate away (Chubb, 2002). The charge decay rate is
dependent on many factors, including material s electrical resistivity, the resistivity of the other
material on contact, RH of the surrounding air and hold time (Bailey, 1993; Sharma et al., 2001a). The
lower the material electron conductivity the longer the time needed for charge decay. A powder in
contact with a conductive material will dissipate the charge quicker than the same powder in contact
with an insulator. It is anticipated that moisture adsorption will make the material more conductive.
(Paasi et al., 2001) showed the charge decay rate to increase with increasing RH due to a concurrent
decrease in surface resistivity. The hold time (defined as the time passed between the end of
processing and dispensing the sample into the Faraday cup for charge measurement) was shown as the
most effective option of dissipating charge following blending (Engers et al., 2006).

Quoting Paraphrasing Vs Summarizing
What is the difference between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing?
What type of citation is required for each? Why is properly citing sources important?
What are the possible consequences of improperly citing references?
In most writing the content and ideas are not always your own.
There for it is important to give credit to the original source of your writing.
You can do this by quoting, paraphrasing or summarizing the original text in which you obtained the
ideas for your writing. Properly citing you re source is necessary when using one of these three ways
of incorporation.
Failing to cite the original text is a dishonest writing technique and can result in discipline. Quoting is

Paraphrasing can be described as using another s ideas and putting it in your own words. Often a
shorter version still including most details. When summarizing you are taking a lot of information
from a source using the main ideas and putting in less words , by leaving out more of the detail. To
properly cite a source you must follow one of several formats. Purdue online writing lab says(1995
2018) APA format is the most common in U.S social science. There are two citations that must be
made, an in text reference and a reference page at the end of your work that includes all resources. In
text citing needs to include the author and year of publication, when quoting work also include the
page number of the quote. An additional page at the end of your work titled references must include
all sources. This should have the title and or website of the text, the author and publication year as
well. Always put the authors last name first and in the case that there is more than one author out then
in alphabetical order. It is important to do your research to properly cite the sources to give credit to

Exploring How Peter Medak Gains the Viewer’s Sympathy for...
Exploring How Peter Medak Gains the Viewer s Sympathy for Derek Bentley in the Film Let Him
Have It! Peter Medak (Medak) chose to make this film because it had an interesting story line. Medak
might have wanted to prove that the justice system makes mistake and sometimes those mistakes
cannot be fixed, like the mistake or the Derek Bentley (Bentley) and Christopher Craig (Craig) case,
where someone was hanged for a miss interpretation of evidence. Film directors like Medak use bias
as their strong point; it keeps the viewers attention on the movie and begins to get the viewers to
imagine what they would do in the situation. The film is set in the 1950 s Britain. Bentley and Craig,

Craig was more in the blame for killing the officer and should have got death penalty, as he pulled the
trigger. Bentley s life should have been spared as a lot of evidence given was bias and did not see
Bentley s point of view. Bentley was also epileptic and could never think for himself and always
followed someone. Medak gains our sympathy for Derek by basing the movie around the misfortunes
of his life. The opening scene of the blitz during world war II where Bentley is trapped under rubble,
as soon as they lift the rubble of the see Bentley having an epileptic fit, we already sympathise for
Bentley, during this scene Medak zooms in onto Bentley during the fit and reduces the volume of the
background and concentrates on the sound of Bentley. This opening scene is very effective; at this
point Medak has already gained our sympathy for Bentley as we he is a child who suffers from
epilepsy. In our minds we see a stereotype of a child being innocent. This scene is bias as it features on
Bentley only and not on any other characters so we straightaway feel sorry for him. We see no one
else s troubles apart from Bentley s, he emphasises on Bentley s innocence. This automatically makes
you question why it had to be him and not someone without an illness. During the blitz is not the only
time we feel sorry for Bentley.

Socrates’ Speech in Apology
Aristophanes Clouds, if read hastily, can be interpreted as a mindless satyr play written in 419 BCE.
Yet the chorus warns the reader not to expect the play to have farcical ploys like a hanging phallus
stitched on the actors to evoke a laugh, but has underlying seriousness as she [the play] comes in
trusting only her words (Clouds 538 44). Even if the play does use some low devices, the play s
message is sophisticated and can be read as a warning to Socrates. Aristophanes is a friendly critic of
Socrates and warns Socrates to change his ways for Athens and for the good of himself (Whidden).

They are referred to as a voice that Socrates hears, not unlike a conscience, that turns me [Socrates]
away from whatever I am about to do, but never turns me forward (Apology 31d). Socrates uses that
as the reason why he never got into politics, as the majority rule is usually against his own code of
morals (31d). Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of
prisoners without trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed
(32d). Socrates may have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the
charge that he corrupts the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Athenians acted
out of fear of heavenly retribution, not morals (Whidden). Those youth found it acceptable to do
whatever they wanted because of the apparent lack of gods and thunderbolts coming down from the
heavens to smite those who deserve justice. Clouds Socrates argues, If in fact he [Zeus] strikes
perjurers, then how is it that he did not burn up Simon, or Cleonymus or Theorus? Yet they are
vehement perjurers. But he strikes his own temple and Sunium, the cape of Athens, and tall oak trees.
Why? (Clouds 398 402).
Those youths have mimicked Socrates style of rhetoric and argument. Pheidippides is an extreme
satiric version of these sophists, as he uses the weaker speech to justify why he has beaten his father
and why he

The Role Of Social Darwinism In The Call Of The Wild
Jack London s The Call of the Wild is a novel written during the literary era of Naturalism. It is about
a pampered dog, Buck, who was thrown into the Alaskan wilderness and becomes part of a team of
sled dogs. Eventually, he becomes the leader of a wolf pack. Naturalism takes place during a time in
America known as the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, the ideas of Social Darwinism take hold.
Social Darwinism is a term scholars use to describe the practice of misapplying the biological
evolutionary language of Charles Darwin to politics, the economy, and society ( Social Darwinism in
the Gilded Age ). But how is London s novel a zeitgeist of Naturalism? Jack London s The Call of the

It is during this time that call of the wild strengthens in Buck, and he goes into the forest and befriends
a wolf. When Buck returns, he finds out that Yeehat Indians have killed everyone at the campsite. As a

the leader of a wolf pack.
According to the article American Naturalism: A Webliography and E Anthology, determinism is a
common theme in Naturalism. It is the belief that actions and events are determined by outside forces.
Atavism can arguably be one of these forces, as it is the tendency to revert back to the primitive (

of their beliefs is in laissez faire capitalism, which is a type of economy in which the government does

Warning Signs Of The Sandy Hook Massacre
Screaming, shuffling, and urging... teachers ushered students to safety inside bathrooms and
classrooms after Adam Lanza shot the first bullet with his semi automatic, AR 15 assault rifle. Lanza
shot 20 students that day, after killing his mother earlier. Imagine if Lanza s community had known
the signs to look for. That massacre could have been prevented. Moved by the event, a non profit
appropriately named, Sandy Hook Promise, arose to educate the populous on the warning signs of gun

Climate Change in Peru Essay
Peru is a nation composed of heterogeneous ecosystems including the coastline of the Pacific Ocean,
deserts, the Andes Mountains including the glacial regions, and the second largest portion of the
Amazon Forest Basin (US AID, 2011). Its heterogeneity creates such a dire situation for Peru in terms
of climate change and the effects it has on each individual system as well as the effects on wildlife and
human occupants that live in these regions. In Peru, the climate changes that have been taking place
have led to several disastrous outcomes that include not only draught, but have also led to depletion of
the Amazon Rain Forest, an increase in disease, extreme temperature changes, glacial ablation,

Cirilo Quispe Latorre, the mayor of Cachimayo district recalls how the climate has change just since
he was younger: The rains used to start in October, and we would plant broad beans, wheat, and
potatoes. Now the rains begin around mid December, and we lose more than a month and a half of
growing time. (Hufstader, 2009). Latorre goes on to say that the rains, which once ended in April now
end in March. This significantly diminishes the amount of time that farmers have to produce crops
which in turn has led to decreases in the output of crops in the last twelve years (Hufstader, 2009).
However, according to the USAID report on Peru, annual rainfall percentages have not changed
drastically over the last 40 years. There has been an increase in the coastal regions and highlands
(where most of farming takes place), a decrease in the jungle areas, and little change anywhere else
(US AID, 2011).What has changed though, is the extent of the drought periods which cannot be
alleviated by the intense periods of rain (US AID, 2011). This issue could be helped in the long term
by utilizing more advanced irrigation methods that could store water during the intense rains to help
alleviate some of the burden of the long droughts.
One of the most significant effects of climate change in the region has been the devastating effects of
the melting glaciers. These glaciers often provide an extra source of water for farming regions, storing
water in the rainy season and

The Great Depression Of The 1930s
The Great Depression of the 1930s is notably one of the greatest crises of American history. During
this time frame the American economy collapsed in great part because of factors such as the existence
of massive wealth inequality, the dust bowl that started in the Great Plains, and the rampant business
speculation of the 1920 s. These factors helped turn an awful economic depression into what would be
called an all out social crisis. Bread lines and soup kitchens became a common occurrence in
American cities. Thousands of families were evicted from their homes everyday, and took to the
streets hoping for some type of assistance. Throughout this time of struggle many American citizens
took to writing the white house and its officials in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The men of the family were less likely to write the white house because of their fear of being looked
at as weak or incapable of providing for their family. This fear is shown in several of the letters,
including a letter written by a mother to President Roosevelt. In the letter the mother asks for money
to help feed her family and concludes the letter with stating, if my husban new this he could Kill me.
In chapter three of the text by McElvaine there is a letter that stands as an example of a female
American citizen pleading to the first lady for clothes. However, what differentiates this letter from the
majority is that this individual is not asking for her family, but asking of a spring coat for herself. In
this letter the woman by the name of Mrs. J.T. addresses the first lady at the time, Eleanor Roosevelt,
as My Dear Friend . This intimate greeting supports the idea that the American population at the time
felt as though the Roosevelt s understood the daily struggle of living through the depression. These
citizens were comfortable confiding in them and sharing their hardships. A belief that the government
including the Roosevelt s would provide much needed relief to the country came with this sense of
comfort and intimacy. Not all American citizens, however, wrote to the white house in need of clothes
or money. The Works

The Life Of A Seaman During The Stuart Age
THE LIFE OF A SEAMAN DURING THE STUART AGE
Gregory Leatherman
Course Title
March 31, 2015 The Stuart Age was a tumultuous time for the men of the Navy Royal. Seamen had to
endure to austere conditions that heretofore were unknown to men in service of the crown. The men
were cut off the common life ashore for months, having to deal with cramped quarters, disease,
repetitive and salty foods, and low pay. On top of all of this sailors had to face the danger of weather
at sea and the constant threat of attack by enemy ships. This paper will attempt to give the reader a
real sense of the experience of the 17th century English sailor. I would be remiss if I did not mention

Once a man had signed on and come aboard, the officers were supposed to decide if the man was an
able or ordinary seaman. Able seamen were more advanced than ordinary and would be given
positions of increased responsibility. Able seamen would helm the ship or control the sails and rigging,
positions that required considerable skill. Taking the helm of a ship meant controlling the movements
of the ship. While an officer would oversee this position, the helmsman may have to make a decision
in an emergency to ensure that wind stayed in the sails. An ordinary seaman was not one that was
unskilled, many times working above the deck and learning the rigging or manning a gun such as a
musket. The pay of a navy man was decent; after 1693 ordinary seamen were given 19 shillings per
month and able seamen were given 24. This pay was about the same as a land laborer, but was less
than could be paid for service in the merchant service. Men expected to be paid a lump sum at the end
of each trip, but naval administration of the time usually did not have the money to do so. Crews could
accumulate massive running debts owed to them by the administration, sometimes up to 3 or 4 years
of pay. In such cases, families of sailors had to use credit or charity from friends and family to afford
life. Samuel Pepys noted in his diary that this put undue stress on the sailors and their families,

Abstract The discovery of free fetal DNA circulating in maternal blood during pregnancy
revolutionized noninvasive prenatal diagnosis. Advancements in prenatal diagnosis in the past decade
have enabled clinicians to accurately diagnose genetic abnormalities in the fetus earlier and without

Poverty In Memphis

Memphis is also known for its high unemployment rates and its low availability of a skilled workforce

Memphis has one of the highest crime rates in the country (Memphis TN: Crime Data and Crime

Voltaire s Views Toward English And French Religion,...
Voltaire s Views Toward English French Religion, Government, and Scientific Advancements
After 1688, England became a constitutional monarchy under the rule of Mary and William. English
society evolved from embracing the absolute monarchy to one that introduces new thought processes
and beliefs. In Voltaire s Letters on England, he contributes the development of England to its
respectable regards toward religion, governmental systems, and scientific advancements. He contrasts
these practices with those of the less respectable Frenchmen, and reveals the different outcomes of the
two nations. Following the Reformation, there was a great division within the Church between the
Catholics and Protestants. This tension was eased during the reign of Queen Elizabeth with the
passing of the Act of Supremacy in 1559, which created the Church of England and consequently the
Anglican Church. Eventually Anglicanism became known as the New Catholicism . While the pope
was no longer recognized, bishops, and many aspects of medieval heritage was retained under the
Anglican Church. It was highly supported by many elites due to its powerful expression of culture. In
Voltaire s letters, he acknowledges that even though everyone is allowed to practice their own religion,
the true religion that in which a man makes his fortune is the Church of England. It was very difficult
for people to obtain jobs in England and Ireland unless they were proclaimed followers. This

A Comparison Of Love In Great Expectations
The Lovely and the Loveless
People as well as writers often mistake infatuation with love. As a result, love at first sight is a
common trope in film and literature. Love is something that takes time and effort; people must choose
to put in the care and understanding into a relationship for it to be considered love. While the two are
similar, infatuation is attraction to someone based on their appearance; love is mutual affection and the
act of looking beyond someone s problems and flaws. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the
main characters all indulge in infatuation, but never love. Because Pip and Estella s lives are built off
of appearances rather than character, they cannot form healthy relationships and thus cannot
experience true love.
Because Pip is obsessed with Estella s beauty and treats her as an object, he can never love her while
he is forcing himself to love someone who will only hurt him. To illustrate, when Pip is out walking
by the piers with Joe, he begins to think of Miss Havisham, an eccentric, miserable old woman, and
Estella, a beautiful but cold hearted girl, pondering to himself, It was pleasant and quiet... whenever I
watched the vessels standing out to sea with their white sails spread, I somehow thought of Miss
Havisham and Estella; whenever the light struck aslant, afar off, upon a cloud or sail or green hill or
waterline, it was just the same (124; ch 15). This reveals how Pip is no longer able to think about
beautiful objects without thinking of Estella. He is connecting symbols of purity and peacefulness to
the ever chaotic and manipulative Miss Havisham and Estella. Because he idealizes them and puts
them on a pedestal, he is unable to care about them as equals or as human beings. In addition, while
Pip is waiting with Joe by the door for Mrs. Joe to come home, he looked at the stars, and considered
how awful it would be for a man to turn his face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or
pity in all the glittering multitude (59; ch 7); this illustrates how Pip views the stars the same way he
views Estella: as cold and pitiless. While they are beautiful, they are completely out of reach. And
despite the fact that stars, by nature, are fiery and warm,

Education Is The Most Powerful Weapon
Nelson Mandela one said, Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.
Education is not just a term to explain a process of getting instructions. Instead, education is extremely
essential procedure in one s life to have this weapon as explained by Mandela. As individuals we tend
to learn from life experiences and events that go on around us. We not only learn about how to become
successful in life instead we learn how to make a living as we encounter new individuals and new life
lessons that teach us whether how to cook, clean, or even how to do math. A person cannot only be
educated if they have a degree instead we all are educated in some unique manner whether it is to sew,
draw, sing, or even as a doctor which helps us complete our given task. School is an institution created
to discipline and educate students in order to become more knowledgeable. Many individuals in
history and even people now attend school as it has become a crucial part in our society just like how
other places such as hospitals and stores have in order to meet the needs of the society s members.
Many individuals believe that school is not an essential aspect in life that helps one grow because of
how they are being educated, in which John Gatto is one of them as well. Even though no school is the
best for everyone, it is still needed to help an individual grow emotionally, intellectual, and socially
into a contributing member of society.

Effects of missing a doctors appointment
Effects of missing a Doctors appointment
No shows are a problem for both doctors and patients.
When a patient misses a doctor/nurse appointment, a follow up or specialist appointment they are not
receiving the care recommended by their doctor/nurse. This could result in the patient becoming more
ill and requiring additional time off work, laying an extra burden on colleagues and bosses, there is
also the risk of infecting others thus carrying additional burdens as more staff may require time of
work or extra appointments. All of this holds a risk of missing deadlines, looking unprofessional and
potentially disrupting the training of personnel on unit.

As the population ever increases doctors are being over stretched more than ever meaning every
appointment slot is valuable, GP s are then forced to discharged patients that repeatedly offend for
missing appointments which leads to complaints, thus creating more work for the surgery staff and
doctors! Then when the said patient applies to re register at the surgery or applies to register at a
different surgery more man hours are consumed.
On researching and writing about this subject it has become apparent that for the sake of one missed
appointment the effects are detrimental to a lot of factors and services. I do feel that within the NHS a
system should be in place to remind patients of an appointment like a txting service as it would be a
lot more cost effective than a missed appointment, however in the military this is very unlikely to
happen because of restrictions and budgets. A missed appointment in the military is down to bad
administration, deploying last minute, compassionate leave or work/training commitments, all I feel
are sufficient excuses with the exception of bad administration this is a personal issue that you as an
individual should take steps to prevent, by the use of a diary, setting an alarm on your phone or

How Did Mythology Influence Greek Culture
Mythology contributes to the culture of many societies. More specifically, Greek mythology severely
influenced Greek society. Monuments, buildings, and statues were built in honor of the Greek gods.
What s unique about Greek mythology, according to my book, states The Greeks made their gods in
their own image (Hamilton). This is different than most religions because the people created their own
gods/goddesses and made them relatable. The concept of gods/goddesses having human like features
and performing emotion driven actions is what makes Greek mythology unique. Compared to
monotheistic religions such as Christianity, it vastly differs since in Christianity God is
incomprehensible while in Greek mythology the gods/goddesses are human like. Some might ask if

My reasoning is that in the end, mythology and religion accomplish the same goal of providing
something to believe in. Lastly, there are also many aspects of mythology that overlaps with religion
such as the concept of gods/goddesses, traditions, and places of worship.
Within the book it also states Greek Mythology is largely made up of stories about gods and
goddesses, but it must not be read as a kind of Greek bible, an account of the Greek religion.
According to the most modern idea, a real myth has nothing to do with religion. It is an explanation of
something (Hamilton). This illustrates that there are two viewpoints of Greek mythology. One is the
past view where Greek mythology is considered a religion. While the other is the present view and
views mythology as stories explaining phenomenons. There are many schools of thought about the
subject, but I personally can understand both viewpoints. From my perspective I believe the purpose
of mythology is to provide explanations of events and is used as a platform to teach a lesson or moral
values. My key concept was folklore. I chose folklore because

Natural Camouflage Essay
Have you ever wondered how to blend into the background? Of the dozens of people you may come
into contact, how many do you remember clearly? It is a scientific fact that the brain tends to focus in
key details in favor of remembering all of them. So how can a person harness this ability as a natural
camouflage? First off, you should understand that multiple paths exist to achieve this goal. Secondly,
only a basic comprehension of these steps is needed to achieve the desired goal of being unseen in a
public setting. These methods have all been proven to work, but the results may vary depending on the
age or general rowdiness of the crowd you are or will be working with. There are three basic methods
to keep in mind at all times. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First and foremost, a certain mindset should be adopted. Clearing the mind is very helpful in this
regard. Afterwards, focusing in on the components of what you need to accomplish the job is crucial.
Consequently, this leads to the ultimate fate of your social disguise. The hardest part of this entire
ordeal is morphing your mindset into what is needed. Luckily, the most common mindset is akin to
something of a hive mind, and you need only to be seen as a mindless drone. Finally, an intricate web

The Miracle Of Jesus Research Paper
In Exodus 3:29, the Lord God called the nation of Israel a stiff necked people; thus considering Israel
s obstinacy, and history of rejecting many of God s chosen, it becomes of no surprise that Israel would
also reject Jesus. According to the New Testament Scriptures, Jesus performed many signs and
wonders to authenticate being the Son of God and Israel s Messiah, however, and as recorded by the
gospel writers Matthew and Mark (Matthew 12:22 37; Mark 3:20 30), Jesus miracle of casting a
demon out of deaf and blind man was attributed to Beelzebub or Satan by the Pharisees (Pentecost,
1981). Hence, the miracle not only caused dismay amongst the Pharisees but the people who
witnessed the miracle as well (Pentecost, 1981). Unfortunately, the people of Israel were taught
through the law by the Pharisees that the sheep should follow the shepherd; therefore, the people of
Israel were unwilling to accept Christ unless the Pharisees accepted Christ. Regrettably, the Pharisees
as shepherds quickly convinced the sheep that the miracle performed in Matthew and ... Show more

Unfortunately for Israel, Jesus had other ideas about what constituted a relationship to the Messiah.
Thus, in Matthew 12:46 50, it is recorded that Jesus rejected the idea of a blood relationship to the
Messiah when Jesus refused to acknowledge the blood relationship that existed between Jesus and
Jesus mother and brothers (Pentecost, 1981). Pointing to the disciples, Jesus Words indicated that any
relationship to the Messiah must be spiritual and based on faith; furthermore, any relationship to the
Messiah must also consist of wanting to do the Will of God (Pentecost, 1981). Jesus Words in
Matthew s narrative ran counterculture to what the Israelites believed; therefore, Israel continued to
reject Jesus as the

High School Football Research Paper
High school football is an experience. Everyone should be able to go to friday night lights. This can be
the most important part of the high schoolers life, this is what they look forward to. Seeing your
friends, watching your favorite player, and overpriced concessions. The school district I was in before
I was in GCISD I lived in Ennis. The ennis lions are 5 time state champs. The last time they won was
in 2014. The panther pride is a close second to how good they are. High school football is something
you can t describe and once you graduate you wish you could be that high schooler in the student
section one more time playing for the championship game.
All girls have something they love that boys don t like as much, and most likely this is shopping. I
love to shop, this is what the shopping bags represent from my mandala. I don t care how long i m
shopping or where i m shopping i love to shop. Me and my mom go shopping at least once a week and
this is how we relax and have down time. Shopping is something that i love to do and could not live
without.
Me and my sister are extremely close and i could not live without her. She is my other half. ... Show

place of them all. I wish i would have never come back and i want to move there and live in my dad s
beach house. A couple places i want to go are africa, bora bora, and italy. When i graduate high school
i plan to take a year off before going to college and moving to another country. This way i can learn
another country s culture and live and work how they do in that country. I really would like to be an

  • 2. Main Features Of Oligopoly Oligopoly: Oligopoly is a type of imperfect competition, wherein there are few sellers dealing either in homogeneous or differentiated products. The term oligopoly has been derived from the two Greek words, oligoi means few and poly means control. Thus, it means the control of the few organisations in the market. For example, oligopoly in India exists in the aviation industry where there are just a few players, such as Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, etc. All these airlines depend on each other for setting their pricing policies. This is because the prices are effected by the price of the competitors products. This implies that organisations may either produce homogeneous products, such as cement, asphalt, concrete and bricks, or differentiated products such as an automobile. If organisations produce homogeneous products, it is said to be pure oligopoly. o Impediments in entry: Other important characteristics of oligopolistic competition is that neither organisations cannot easily enter the market; nor they can make an exit from the market. The reasons for difficult entry in the market are various legal, social and technological barriers. This also implies that the existing organisations have a complete control over the market. o Enhanced role of government: Under oligopolistic market structure, the government has a greater role as it acts as a guard to anti competitive behaviours of the oligopolists. It is often observed that oligopolists may engage in the illegal practice of collusion, where they together make production and pricing decisions. Oligopolists may start acting as a single organisation and further increase prices and profits. Thus, in such environment, the government requires to keep a watch on such activities to curb the illegal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These questions can lead to different answers that in essence come down to particular human behaviors. (Colin Campbell 282). One example of human behavior with regards to the food we eat is that most of the world s population eats more that they really need to maintain proper nutrition and healthy lives. • 14. Charge Decay Of A Powder Surface Will Partly Decay 3.5. Storage Over time, the charge accumulated on a powder surface will partly decay (dissipate) (Malave Lopez and Peleg, 1985). Charge decay is a complex phenomenon that has been measured by different techniques (Paasi et al., 2001). The timescale for electrostatic charge decay is an important factor. For example, there will be a higher probability of considerable charge build up on the material when charge decay occurs slowly. The charge decay rate is a measure of the rate at which the electrostatic charge present on the surface of a material can migrate away (Chubb, 2002). The charge decay rate is dependent on many factors, including material s electrical resistivity, the resistivity of the other material on contact, RH of the surrounding air and hold time (Bailey, 1993; Sharma et al., 2001a). The lower the material electron conductivity the longer the time needed for charge decay. A powder in contact with a conductive material will dissipate the charge quicker than the same powder in contact with an insulator. It is anticipated that moisture adsorption will make the material more conductive. (Paasi et al., 2001) showed the charge decay rate to increase with increasing RH due to a concurrent decrease in surface resistivity. The hold time (defined as the time passed between the end of processing and dispensing the sample into the Faraday cup for charge measurement) was shown as the most effective option of dissipating charge following blending (Engers et al., 2006). ... Socrates is not exactly godless or immoral for he would not condemn a group of prisoners without trying them separately. His whole care is to commit no unjust or impious deed (32d). Socrates may have moral standards, but perhaps his followers would not. This leads into the charge that he corrupts the youth, for if Socrates can question the gods, they can too. Cirilo Quispe Latorre, the mayor of Cachimayo district recalls how the climate has change just since he was younger: The rains used to start in October, and we would plant broad beans, wheat, and potatoes. Now the rains begin around mid December, and we lose more than a month and a half of growing time. (Hufstader, 2009). Latorre goes on to say that the rains, which once ended in April now end in March. This significantly diminishes the amount of time that farmers have to produce crops which in turn has led to decreases in the output of crops in the last twelve years (Hufstader, 2009). However, according to the USAID report on Peru, annual rainfall percentages have not changed drastically over the last 40 years. There has been an increase in the coastal regions and highlands (where most of farming takes place), a decrease in the jungle areas, and little change anywhere else (US AID, 2011).What has changed though, is the extent of the drought periods which cannot be alleviated by the intense periods of rain (US AID, 2011). This issue could be helped in the long term by utilizing more advanced irrigation methods that could store water during the intense rains to help alleviate some of the burden of the long droughts. One of the most significant effects of climate change in the region has been the devastating effects of the melting glaciers. During this time frame the American economy collapsed in great part because of factors such as the existence of massive wealth inequality, the dust bowl that started in the Great Plains, and the rampant business speculation of the 1920 s. These factors helped turn an awful economic depression into what would be called an all out social crisis. Bread lines and soup kitchens became a common occurrence in American cities. Thousands of families were evicted from their homes everyday, and took to the streets hoping for some type of assistance. Throughout this time of struggle many American citizens took to writing the white house and its officials in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In chapter three of the text by McElvaine there is a letter that stands as an example of a female American citizen pleading to the first lady for clothes. However, what differentiates this letter from the majority is that this individual is not asking for her family, but asking of a spring coat for herself. In this letter the woman by the name of Mrs. J.T. addresses the first lady at the time, Eleanor Roosevelt, as My Dear Friend . This intimate greeting supports the idea that the American population at the time felt as though the Roosevelt s understood the daily struggle of living through the depression. These citizens were comfortable confiding in them and sharing their hardships. A belief that the government including the Roosevelt s would provide much needed relief to the country came with this sense of comfort and intimacy. Seamen had to endure to austere conditions that heretofore were unknown to men in service of the crown. The men were cut off the common life ashore for months, having to deal with cramped quarters, disease, repetitive and salty foods, and low pay. On top of all of this sailors had to face the danger of weather at sea and the constant threat of attack by enemy ships. Able seamen were more advanced than ordinary and would be given positions of increased responsibility. Able seamen would helm the ship or control the sails and rigging, positions that required considerable skill. Taking the helm of a ship meant controlling the movements of the ship. While an officer would oversee this position, the helmsman may have to make a decision in an emergency to ensure that wind stayed in the sails. An ordinary seaman was not one that was unskilled, many times working above the deck and learning the rigging or manning a gun such as a musket. The pay of a navy man was decent; after 1693 ordinary seamen were given 19 shillings per month and able seamen were given 24. This pay was about the same as a land laborer, but was less than could be paid for service in the merchant service. Men expected to be paid a lump sum at the end of each trip, but naval administration of the time usually did not have the money to do so. Crews could accumulate massive running debts owed to them by the administration, sometimes up to 3 or 4 years of pay. In such cases, families of sailors had to use credit or charity from friends and family to afford life. Voltaire s Views Toward English French Religion, Government, and Scientific Advancements After 1688, England became a constitutional monarchy under the rule of Mary and William. English society evolved from embracing the absolute monarchy to one that introduces new thought processes and beliefs. In Voltaire s Letters on England, he contributes the development of England to its respectable regards toward religion, governmental systems, and scientific advancements. He contrasts these practices with those of the less respectable Frenchmen, and reveals the different outcomes of the two nations. Following the Reformation, there was a great division within the Church between the Catholics and Protestants. • 28. A Comparison Of Love In Great Expectations The Lovely and the Loveless People as well as writers often mistake infatuation with love. As a result, love at first sight is a common trope in film and literature. Love is something that takes time and effort; people must choose to put in the care and understanding into a relationship for it to be considered love. While the two are similar, infatuation is attraction to someone based on their appearance; love is mutual affection and the act of looking beyond someone s problems and flaws. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the main characters all indulge in infatuation, but never love. Because Pip and Estella s lives are built off of appearances rather than character, they cannot form healthy relationships and thus cannot experience true love. Because Pip is obsessed with Estella s beauty and treats her as an object, he can never love her while he is forcing himself to love someone who will only hurt him. To illustrate, when Pip is out walking by the piers with Joe, he begins to think of Miss Havisham, an eccentric, miserable old woman, and Estella, a beautiful but cold hearted girl, pondering to himself, It was pleasant and quiet... whenever I watched the vessels standing out to sea with their white sails spread, I somehow thought of Miss Havisham and Estella; whenever the light struck aslant, afar off, upon a cloud or sail or green hill or waterline, it was just the same (124; ch 15). This reveals how Pip is no longer able to think about beautiful objects without thinking of Estella. He is connecting symbols of purity and peacefulness to the ever chaotic and manipulative Miss Havisham and Estella. Because he idealizes them and puts them on a pedestal, he is unable to care about them as equals or as human beings. In addition, while Pip is waiting with Joe by the door for Mrs. Joe to come home, he looked at the stars, and considered how awful it would be for a man to turn his face up to them as he froze to death, and see no help or pity in all the glittering multitude (59; ch 7); this illustrates how Pip views the stars the same way he views Estella: as cold and pitiless. While they are beautiful, they are completely out of reach. And despite the fact that stars, by nature, are fiery and warm, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
