Peter Quill And His Walkman Essay
Peter Quill and His Walkman. Guardians of the Galaxy.
*SPOILERS*
[Sorry]
HOW THE WALKMAN CAME TO HIM Peter Quill, aka Star lord, is a half human half
extraterrestrial hybrid that lived on planet earth circa the 1980 s just any other human [he didn t know
he was a hybrid until later on]. Just a young boy at the time, he was fond of the simple joys in life such
as family, friends, playing around and music just as any other young boy. Life went on. A grave
tragedy occurred during the beginning of the movie. His mother, terminally ill, was living in her final
moments while young peter quill was just outside in the hospital hallway, in despair and denial. The
only possession he had on him was a Sony Walkman with a cassette tape that his mother had given
him both earlier in life titled Awesome Mix Vol. 1 . While in the hallway he listened to I m not in love
by 10CC. He was called into his mother s room and the family gathered around while comforting
peter quill s mom. She had a present that she had made him before she had to venture on elsewhere.
She exchanged the gift with him and then a flat line is heard in the background. He doesn t open her
gift until the end of the movie which is around twenty years later. We ll get to the gift later.
What Does the Walkman Mean? Before we dive into matters such as analyzing and defining the
meaning behind the Walkman in the movie and to the audience, we have to set a foundation of
understanding. Representation: The

Gold Diggers Of 1933 Essay
Gold Diggers of 1933 is an example of the backstage musical where the principle characters are
themselves preparing to put on a musical. From the title it is possible to deduce what the film is about,
reflecting the struggle for Americans at the time. Set during the Great Depression Gold Diggers of
1933 expresses the differences in social classes as well as the representation of women at the time.
The women in this film essentially live up to male expectations and yet it becomes increasingly clear
that although the men hold the money in order to secure their sense of masculinity, it is the women
however who are seen to manipulate the men, whether that be by getting the men to buy them material
things such as the hats bought for the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, although money seems to be the main theme during the Great Depression especially, it is the
power in which the women hold over the men by their sensuality and prowess which eventually
allows them to move up a class by marrying these men. The opening number establishes an unusual
tone for the film with a close up of Ginger Rogers singing the chorus of We re in the Money in pig
latin. The chorus of this tune hints at the showgirls sex appeal as a way for earning income, an idea
easily supported by their costumes which feature large coins covering their bodies. This giddy, ecstatic
opening is soon interrupted by the authorities who begin seizing costumes and props from the show
because of unpaid debts. Although the number itself conveys that show producer Barney Hopkins, just
like the filmmakers, realizes that glitzy optimism is what troubled audiences want to see, this intrusion
of (onscreen) social reality tells the viewer that the film is not ignoring the present day economic
concerns in the pursuit of pure

Essay on All the Presidents Men
All the President s Men is a book by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. The book discussed what
happened to President Nixon in the Watergate Scandal from Bernstein and Woodward s point of view.
The Watergate Scandal was a significant part of presidential history. This even would result in Nixon s
resignation and what would have been his guaranteed impeachment. The Watergate Scandal took an
impact on politics as a whole. Politicians are known as liars and people who keep secrets from the
public. The Watergate Scandal is something Nixon can never make up for, but will always
beremembered for.
Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were the investigative reporters to the Watergate scandal.
Bernstein was a reporter at the Washington Post; he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nixon had seven men who had helped him the whole time. These men are known as the Watergate
Seven . The Watergate Seven involved John Mitchell, H.R. Haldeman, Kenneth Parkinson, Charles
Colson, Gordon Strachan, John Ehrlichman, and Robert Mardian. The Watergate Seven did many
different things in the Watergate Scandal. They broke into the Watergate hotel, wiretapped phones and
attempted burglaries. The Watergate Scandal was truly the biggest political scandal in United States
History. Over forty people where charged with crimes relating to the scandal. Bernstein and
Woodward were given a fantastic oppourtunity to uncover something truly significant in history. The
twenty one months of investigative reporting done by these two men would ruin Nixon s name and
make these two common everyday reporters lives change forever. Woodward first got his life
changing call on June 17th 1972 with his editor telling him about a small invasion of the Democratic
Party Headquarters. With being related to the scandal, two members of President Nixon s cabinet,
H.R. Hadlemen and John Ehrlichman, quickly resigned. When first thought of the president even
having something to do with the Watergate Scandal, he made every effort to possibly hide this career
ruining event. The break in was first found by a security guard by the name of, Frank Wills. Wills saw
a piece of tape covering a broken lock. Wills was

Gastrointestinal Illness Caused By The Species
Cryptosporidiosis is one of the most known gastrointestinal illness caused by the genus of
Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidiosis, according to the CDC, has become one of the most common
causes of waterborne diseases in the United States, with outbreaks increasing annually. An outbreak of
Cryptosporidiosis, in Milwaukee in 1993 affected around 400,000 people and was traced to the city s
water supply (NFID, 2008). The most common symptom associated with this disease is Diarrhea.
Pathophysiology
Cryptosporidiosis is an infection caused by the spore forming protozoan known as Cryptosporidia
(Jacqueline, 2015). Protozoa are a group of parasites that infect the human intestine. Parasites are
organisms that live within another organism and obtain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most known cause or reason that you can get Cryptosporidiosis is by digesting contaminated
water, but also it can be spread by humans through sexual behavior (Jacqueline, 2015). A person can
get infected with Cryptosporidiosis by digesting contaminated water, this can occur through drinking
or swimming in infected water, swallowing or putting something infected in the mouth (such as
fingers), being exposed to human feces through sexual contact , or by eating uncooked food (such as
salad greens) that has been contaminated (John et al. 2012). Most people who experience significant
symptoms from Cryptosporidiosis have an altered immune system, and suffer from diseases such as
AIDS and cancer (Jaqueline, 2015). Due to a protective outer shell, Cryptosporidium can live outside
of the body for several months and are very resistant to the chlorine based disinfectants that are often
used to treat water sources (GEEH, 2013).
Clinical Manifestation Cysts of Cryptosporidia mature in the intestine and bile ducts within three to
five days of ingestion. Many individuals are infected without any illness, but the major symptom of
Cryptosporidiosis is diarrhea, which is often watery. Also some other symptoms you may have with
this disease are Dehydration, low grade fever, nausea, and abdominal cramps (Jaqueline, 2015). The
people who contract Cryptosporidiosis and have a normal immune

Self Habituation In Brave New World
Epicurus was a Greek philosopher born in 341 B.C., and he lived until 240 B.C. According to The
Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, He [Epicurus] claimed to be self taught, although tradition states
that he was schooled in the systems of Plato and Democritus by his father and various philosophers
(Columbia). These prior philosophers heavily influenced the ideals that Epicurus would popularize
later on in life. The ideals of Epicurus went on to be known as Epicureanism, which essentially was a
school of thought that recognized pleasure as the greatest virtue (James).
Epicurus grew up in the Athenian colony of Samos in the Mediterranean Sea. He began his
philosophical education at the age of 19 after the death of Aristotle (O Keefe). After this ... Show more

Primarily the Epicurean ideal of self habituation is exercised on a regular basis. In fact in the World
State, self habituation is so idealized that even young children are encouraged to satisfy themselves
sexually as they please. This is made evident in chapter 3, where the children are observed taking part
in a rudimentary sexual game (Huxley 32). Aside from physical habituation, mental satisfaction is
heavy practiced as individuals in the world state consume soma, a drug that elicits utter bliss, in any
occasion of mental stress. The quote Was and will make me ill, I take a gramme and only am (Huxley
111) exemplifies the extent to which citizens of the World State avoid troublesome thought and instead
turn to soma because it is pleasurable. Furthermore, the idea that God/s take second place to science is
another congruency between A Brave New World and Epicureanism. As stated by the quote Call it the
fault of civilization. God isn t compatible with machinery and scientific medicine and universal
happiness (Huxley 261) the ideals of both entities mandate that God/s must take second place the
sciences. For these reasons the ideals of the society in A Brave New World, and the ideals of
Epicureanism are incredibly

The movie poster for Thor is extraordinarily detailed and eye catching. This poster uses a different
combination of colors. The main colors are dull shades of blue and gray, but throughout the middle of

the poster that catches the viewer s eye is the couple standing directly in the middle of the action with
very serious facial expressions, looking off to the right of the poster. This image is clear as the viewer

will notice bright orange balls of fire shooting out of the sky, and the balls of fire come across as if
they are shooting from the tower. Finally, at the bottom of the poster, there is a clique of tiny figures

President Pierce And The Former President
Karolina and Anna approached the banquet table as fine ladies sat at the table and older men were
milling around the room puffing on their cigars and discussing politics.
Close to the table where Karolina and Anna sat down, several men were standing in a semicircle
around a short older bald headed man with only slight wisps of white hair. The older man was the
former president. Franz Sigil managed to include himself along with Anna s husband in the circle of
men surrounding the former president.

and he walked back into the center of the ballroom as all of the men followed the former president into
the ballroom and rejoined their ladies at the banquet table.
Young ladies and gentlemen began to dance and swirl around the center of the ball room while
Karolina and her friend were approached by two distinguished ladies. They made their introductions
and inquired about Karolina, for they recognized Anna and her husband. They observed Karolina s
simple hairstyle and lack of jewelry. Anna proudly explained to them she was a friend from the Grand
Duchy of Baden and described the wedding of Princess Marie both attended back in Mannheim. The
two women were suitably impressed as Anna described the members of royalty they had seen. After
they left, Anna squeezed Karolina s hand and mouthed the words Thank you to her as other women
slowly came up to both them.
Karolina turned her attention back to the orchestra playing in the room as Anna repeated her story to
more and more of New York City s Society women. She recognized the music being played and

constant clash between himself and his evil shadow. When a person is deprived of something, that
person can cross any borders to retrieve it and quench his thirst. Dr. Jekyll is regarded as a profound

The Structure Of Eukaryotic Chromosomes
Humans are all totally unique in one way. That one way is DNA. Human DNA is very complex and it
takes on a certain structure in order for it to function correctly. Understanding the structure of
eukaryotic chromosomes, or condensed forms of DNA, and how they function helps scientists
understand how human DNA is unique. These highly specialized cells help eukaryotic organisms,
such as humans, to sustain life.
What is a eukaryotic organism? A eukaryotic organism is any organism with complex cells, or a single
cell with a complex structure. These eukaryotic organisms cells genetic material is organized into
chromosomes found in a nucleus. These eukaryotic cells also have membrane bound organelles, which
distinguishes them from other types of organisms.
Structure of Eukaryotic Chromosomes Multi celled organisms like human beings require a large
amount of DNA. There are two meters of DNA in every human cell but the cell s nucleus diameter is
only 5 8 micrometers. So how does all that DNA fit into our cell s nucleus? Well the very long double
stranded DNA molecules are tightly packed into chromosomes, which are highly compacted.
Chromosome 22, for example, has 48 million nucleotide pairs which, if stretched out end to end the
DNA would extended 1.5 cm. Chromosome 22 during the stage of mitosis it measures at an
astonishing 2 micrometers. This is ten thousand times tighter then if the DNA was stretched out all the
way. DNA has the assistance of the chromosomal proteins, histones

Great Expectations Social Class Analysis
Social status and money play a big role in our society today. This tends to affect how many are treated.
For example, the wealthy tend to get more recognition, due to their extreme amount of money and the
things they have. Whereas the lower class tends to get a bad reputation of being known as uneducated,
poor and common. This is well applied to many of the characters in the book Great Expectations. In
fact, social class and money determine how characters in Great Expectations interact amongst each
other. When some of these characters experience a class that they are unfamiliar with, expecting great
things, they are oblivious to how they treat their peers. In the beginning of the book, we meet Pip and
are introduced to his perspective of life. Pip lives with his older sister, Mrs. Joe, and her husband, Joe
Gargery. They could be described as belonging to the lower end of the social class. ...Mrs. Joe
Gargery, who married a blacksmith (Dickens 1). Later on, as Pip evolves, he is hurt when he gets
called common by Estella. This changes Pip s perspective of himself and leads him to wanting to be
known as uncommon. When Pip later becomes wealthy, he changes into someone he is not. He begins
to strongly mistreat others, based on the contrast of social class between the different characters.
Biddy is one of the many characters influenced by social class. Have you ever considered that he may
be proud (Dickens 116). Biddy becomes angered at the result of Pip s sudden change

Film4 Tariffs
Film4 looks for stories with a wide range of subject matters and budgets but are in favour of
contemporary pieces, usually non period, that can, and usually are made by British led talent. In
general they do not develop films for family audiences. Film4 does not operate on tariff prices but
rather aims to fund ten to twelve features films per year with a mix of licence fee and equity. Tariffs
are taxes imposed on imported goods. The reasons for these is to restrict trade increasing the price of
imports for costumers. Tariffs provide additional revenue for governments and domestic producers.

Option 2 was chosen as it was the only option which would improve service outcomes, meet the
Heathy Weight Strategy for Blackpool, meet NHS planning framework, National Skills Framework
and current NICE guidelines.
The expected outcomes for this service are a weight reduction of 5 10% weight per participant with
weight maintenance, reduced waiting times, reduced the high levels of high Did Not Attend (DNA),
reduce health inequalities in Blackpool and a reduction in obesity associated health condition. Overall
this will contribute to a reduction of cost and burden to the health social care. The programme costing
£82.5 per person is considered cost effective according to NICE (2014b) as it is less than £100 per
person.

Character Analysis Of Mark Watney In The Martian
Mark Watney in the book, The Martian by Andy Weir stayed on Mars for over a year and a half. Alone
and hopeless, from the day he was stranded to the day he left, it was a never ending struggle to survive
taking a deep toll on him mentally and physically. Mark Watney s personality and attitude never
changed, he took the worse of situations and lightened them up, while still understanding fully of the
seriousness of them. Traumatizing events and life threatening circumstances never even phased
Watney, he kept the same positive attitude throughout the entirety of the novel resulting in him being a
static character and making little change throughout the book. Mark Watney was brought onto Ares 3
(the mission to Mars) mostly because of his charisma. When put under pressure and tough situations,
he deals with this by cracking jokes, Yes, of course duct tape works in a near vacuum. Duct tape works
anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped. During high stress moments, Watney is
constantly making remarks like this quote. Being able to poke fun at a bad situation is Watney s way
of easing tension levels and making the best of bad situations. Having this charisma was crucial for
giving Watney hope to keep pushing on each day, which is why he never changed, having any other
personality would be counterproductive to his main goal of getting rescued. Being able to analysis
whatever problem is thrown at him then from there ease stress from cracking jokes was Watney s way

A Study Of Non Invasive Measurement Techniques
Abstract Diabetes is considered to be one of the major health care epidemics of modern era. The
determination of blood glucose concentration using the self monitoring blood glucose devices
involves the chemical analysis of blood samples taken by pricking the finger or extracting blood from
forearm. The pain, discomfort and inconvenience in the current invasive method have led to the
feasibility study of non invasive measurement techniques.
In this paper, an optical method using NIR technique based on occlusion spectroscopy is used which
shows that it can be possible to measure glucose concentration in blood non invasively.
Keywords: Non invasive, spectroscopy, euglycemia, hypoglycaemia.
By using the Monte Carlo method, Katsuhiko et al. (2003) has developed a non invasive system using
near infrared [4]. To detect the glucose level, fibre optic probes was developed that consist of a source
and detector optical fibres. Both source and detector are separated by 0.65 mm, placed on the skin
surface. They reported that the correlation coefficient of blood glucose predicted by near infrared and
finger prick was 0.928 with a standard error of prediction of 32.2 mg/dL [4]. Another research based
on near infrared has been done by Ilan Gabriely, MD et al. (1999) [5].
They were using transcutaneous near infrared spectroscopy system to monitor blood glucose levels
during euglycemia and hypoglycaemia. The results proved that near infrared can be used to predict the
glucose levels in

My Experience At The Grocery Store
There was once a time in my life where everything was perfect. There were smiles, toys, good times,
friendships and playgrounds. This period of time was my early childhood when the only time I
became sick was when I fell during my joyous playtimes. However, as I grew older, the world and my
environment changed. I always tried to keep healthy by maintaining the right diet and taking vitamins.
Despite this, something terrible happened to me on December 12th, 2015.
December 12th, 2015 was just another regular day for me. I was working at my part time job at the
grocery store. I did the same routine tasks as any other day: said my prayers, had breakfast, showered
and got prepared to go to work. That morning was a beautiful morning. The sun was shining brightly,
the birds were chirping sweetly and a warm Christmas spirit was in my home. My parents were jovial
as on any other day, and they both encouraged me to have a wonderful day. Work began at 8am. It was
7:16 am when I left home to go to work. I was energetic and excited.
I arrived at work at 7:45 am to begin my shift. The sun was extremely hot and I began to sweat as I
unlocked the outdoor trolleys. However, I did not let this deter me, as I was in an energetic mood and
eager to spread the Christmas spirit to all the customers whom I would encounter. At 8am when the
supermarket doors opened, there was a huge rush. This was expected as the Christmas period was
always busy. I greeted the customers warmly and performed my task

Comparison Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Prompt 1: An Exploration of Self Self is a definition of who we are, and that definition can come from
two sources: ourselves and those we are close to. The resulting person is usually some combination of
the two perceptions of self. In the works The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert
Louis Stevenson and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, this idea of self is explored.
We see how a pair of characters meddle with their own definition of themselves and the eventual
ramifications of the changes made. Interestingly, although the results are very different, the two pairs
follow the same rules when it comes to the definition of self: the truth will always show itself, no
matter how hard one tries to suppress it. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jekyll is a weak, decent man by nature. Hyde is a strong, evil man by nature. Thus Hyde overpowers
and destroys Jekyll, and then himself, having nothing more to consume than the soul of his alter ego.
They were true to their natures, and the rest is just simple math. The calculations for Jack and
Algernon are a little more complicated, but follow the same basic equation. Take what is true about
them from their various influences and add it all up. In Jack s case, his name turns out to actually be
Ernest, he comes from the same family as Algernon (he s even Gwendolyn s cousin but we don t like
to dwell on that), and he loves Gwendolen. These things are true about him. The double life and
falsehood fades away in the face of his true self. Algernon has a bit less luck when it comes to what is
true in his nature, but he gets the girl, so it s still a happy ending. Algernon s name doesn t end up
being Ernest, and he gets caught in his fake persona, but Cecily loves him regardless. And then, of
course, it is revealed that Jack is actually Algernon s elder brother, so his city character is actually real,
without him even knowing

The Therapeutic Benefits Of Yoga And Mindfulness Meditation
The Therapeutic Benefits of Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation We live in a world today in which we
are continuously looking for the new thing. With the speed of technological advances in our society,
individuals have become accustomed to reading up on the newest, most innovative to date jet plane,
new shoes with new technology for speed and agility, and, of course, new iPhones coming out twice a
year with cool new applications. The common word here is new and it is a simple syllable that has the
power to make any novel thing be perceived as appealing. As modern medicines continue to develop,
the public is also in demand for new age therapies, and thus we have seen an increase in attention
being directed toward the use of holistic medicines. Naturalistic and holistic methods are receiving
positive criticisms leading to an increase in the attention it is being granted them from multiple fields
of study. Due to the positive effects often observed as a result of such therapies, as well as their lack of
negative side effects, therapies that exclude the use of chemical medicines and focus on natural
healing are gaining international popularity. With media s current emphasis on physical fitness, society
is showing in an increased interest in keeping up with the trend a constructive trend when compared to
other subjects emphasized by the media. Furthermore, there have been countless reports stating the

Politics And The English Language By George Orwell
The topics of the declining of the English language and political writing are frequently discussed
amongst several people. The English language is constantly being altered with the introduction of new
phrases, through generations and social media. These phrases are looked at as bad habits, sometimes
referred to as poor writing in comparison to good traditional English. Political leaders typically give
speeches containing vague language to justify actions taken in places around the world. These
speeches are believed to use poor writing simply moving away from the truth of what is being
discussed. In his essay titled Politics and the English Language , George Orwell uses examples to
explain what he believes to be poor writing habits, and the common mistakes made by many in
modern writing during his era. In Orwell s essay, five samples of writing are given. These examples
are each what George believes illustrates the mental vices from which we suffer . On page 10 of his
essay Orwell uses a sample from Ecclesiastes. In the first sample by Ecclesiastes, zero words deriving
from Latin roots are used. Orwell believes that this allows the writers message to be clear to the
reader. In the last sentence he states, I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift
nor the battle to the strong neither yet bread to the wise. From this sentence alone most can understand
that Ecclesiastes is discussing In terms of modern writing Orwell predicts that

Love Revealed In The Two Lovers By Marie De France
The Two Lovers by Marie de France is about a father and a daughter and the many issues that they
have. For one, the King believed that his daughter could not marry just anyone. He comes up with a
plan where the one who wants to marry his beautiful daughter would have to carry her up a very high
mountain. Right away, we begin to see the problem with this idea. Every man who tried to accomplish
the task did not succeed. I feel like most of the men that volunteered to do this were just doing it to
prove that they were the greatest and strongest. This is where I believe that the King was trying to
force love that didn t exist. The King s daughter also had a lot of love for her father. We see this when

The odds were not in her favor because many men had tried and no one had succeeded. If the father

think that this man would do anything for her. Perhaps she was looking for a lot of things in a man and

would ve had a completely different ending. Of course, she would ve still had her father s approval in
mind, but at least she could ve had a say in her love life. Maybe seeing the man die was the last straw
from a lot of distress. I think Marie de France was trying to show how such a controlled life could end

Canadian Landfills
Canadians create a lot of waste. In 2008, Canadians produced over 1,031 kilograms of waste per
person and overall sent approximately 26 million tons of waste for disposal to landfills or incinerators.
The good news is the amount of materials diverted, using recycling and other diversion methods,
increased by about 10% to almost 8.5 million tons during the last decade compared to an increase of
3% for total solid waste. Total current expenditures on solid waste management by local governments
in Canada cost us approximately$2.6 billion in 2008. The majority, around $1.1 billion, was related to
collection and transportation. Aside from using less, there are a number of reasons to process what we
do use in different ways that are more economical and often profitable.
There is the present issue of contamination from existing landfills in soil, groundwater and air.

Prohibition Of Marijuana, Heroin, And Other Drugs
It is also possible that drug users are irrational decision makers and might not understand the adverse
long term effects and addictive properties. Prohibition should reduce demand through legal penalties;
however, since not all drug users are rational choice makers, demand can increase by creating a
forbidden fruit effect. The consequences of increased use add to the complexity and costs of
enforcement on both drug users and the general population. Drug users, trying to avoid the legal
consequences of their use, often times interact with non users in ways that are harmful and costly.
Additionally, non users are also impacted by increased taxes to pay for the enforcement, by
regulations to check for drugs that take time and are inconvenient, and by becoming innocent
bystanders that can get caught in the middle of attempted arrests, often with deadly affects.
The long federal experiment in prohibition of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs has given us
unprecedented crime and corruption combined with a manifest failure to stop the use of drugs or
reduce their availability to children. The factor that determines the amount of violence created by
prohibition is the level of enforcement. There are two main reasons for this. One, black markets only
form when the enforcement is very strict and, two, increasingly strict enforcement leads to violence
both in making arrests and as competing suppliers seek to capture market share. The violence not only

The Sadness of Poverty in Frank McCourt s Angela s Ashes
It is not the rich man you should properly call happy, but him who knows how to use with wisdom the
blessings of the gods, to endure hard poverty, and who fears dishonor worse than death, and is not
afraid to die for cherished friends or fatherland.
In the novel Angela s Ashes, (1996) by Frank McCourt, a life of poverty is the only life this family
knows. It is a memoir about a young boy born in New York City. Frank, born ten months prior to his
brother Malachy, was raised in a small apartment with his parents, Angela and Malachy McCourt.

Soon after that, she had a little girl named Margaret. Margaret lived for a month and then she died.
That was the only month that Malachy never drank the whole paycheck and he never once came home
late singing any songs. Angela loved her little girl more than anything, especially because of the way it
reformed Malachy. After Margaret died, they moved to Ireland, hoping to get away from the poor
streets of New York and back to their families.
They found a home in Limerick, if you could call it a home. It was a room with a fireplace, a table,
three chairs and a big bed. With a family of six, it was a tight fit, but after nights on boats and trains, it
was heaven. Then came the fleas, which fed upon their slender bodies night after night.
Frank McCourt has a subtle yet striking way of telling his story like it was; miserable. The way he
described how little food they had and how close their family came to being homeless is amazing.
When telling about the twins deaths he states it so simply, I know Oliver is dead and Malachy knows
Oliver is dead but Eugene is too small to know anything. When he wakes in the morning he says,
Ollie, Ollie, and toddles around the room looking under beds. . . . Dad says Eugene is lucky to have

Similarities Of Mice And Rats
Rats and mice habitat and life cycles Rodents can be found everywhere on earth. Among the several
different types of rodents, the ones that mostly prefer to live near humans, being the most numerous,
are the mice and rats. They live in colonies which comprise of complex hierarchies, wherein they form
deep bonds, often putting their own lives at risk to save family and friends. Their best habitats are
cavities, holes inside walls, in sewer pipes, in stores where foodstuffs are kept, in the fields and in

them to put up a nest. In addition, they can easily adjust to any kind of climate and even wipe out

his career and spent his free time learning and teaching pilots about flight safety and how to prepare
for the worst. Chesley spent hours learning the anatomy of a plane, as well as various crashes and
famous pilots learning exactly what needed to happen if such an occasion were to occur. Of course we
all know that every crash is different and no matter how much you study you will never be truly
prepared for such an event. Sullenberger has two daughters one of sixteen and the other of fourteen
and a wife. Thursday morning, before the crash Sullenberger woke up early, he drove to San Francisco

Fahrenheit 451 Analysis
My eyes widen as my dad hurtles past me in his neon green skis. I cringe as he accelerates towards the
end of the slope I know he s going to wipe out. My dad couldn t seem to make his skis face inwards in
a triangle to slow down. Like I expected, his arms fly through the air, and he plunges into the snow. I
can t resist laughing as I make my way down the slope and help my dad up. At the time, I only thought
about how funny it was, but looking back, I realize it contains an important lesson. When I was
younger, I believed adults were always right, that they always knew what to say and do. Thinking
about this memory, I realized that wasn t true adults are just as human as kids are. This knowledge has
helped me understand that I can t expect adults to succeed at everything just because they are adults.
In Fahrenheit 451,
Ray Bradbury foreshadows Montag s failure as an adult, similar to my foreshadow of my dad s
inability to ski. Through the use of a memory and a tough question, Bradbury hints that Montag will
try and fail to be as exceptional and admirable as kids assume adults ... Show more content on

Guy Montag, a fireman whose job is to burn books, has a memory Once as a child, he had sat upon a
yellow dune by the sea in the middle of the blue and hot summer day, trying to fill a sieve with sand,
because some cruel cousin had said, Fill this sieve and you ll get a dime! And the faster he poured, the
faster it sifted through with a hot whispering (74). In the memory, Montag wanted to fill the sieve with
sand, but like his failure to memorize the book, it was impossible to fill a sieve with sand. Because the
sand was so small, it slipped through the holes in the sieve. The memory gave him the idea to try and
memorize the book by reading the whole book quickly, and even though he fails to fill a sieve with
sand as a child, he believes he can memorize the book as an

she said mother dear, could I go out marching with the other children. I turned from the stove and said
sweetie that isn t a place for children your age to be going, there are too many clubs, guns firing, and
many more things. Instead you are going to the Children Church to sang in the children s choir. Mary
Jane replied Yes Ma am and she went into her room to get dressed. Mary Jane walked out her room

Essay On Multiscale Basis
2.2 Modeling the solution using multiscale basis
Selecting the dominant scale corresponding to the small eigen values gives rise to a fixed basis sets
and using fixed basis to solve the weak form produces the fixed solution un,fixed(x,t) = ‫ﰄ‬ n n,ωj n H
n,ωj i,j βi,j φi (x,t), where βi,j s are defined in each computational time interval and φi (x,t) are fixed
basis functions. Fixed solution at n + 1 th time point is computed by solving equation
(3) by setting un as the fixed solution at n th time point and writing un+1 in the space of HH

The true solution is assumed to be normal around the fixed solution with small variance. Finally, this
structure enables us to compute the posterior or conditional distribution of the basis selection
probability and conditional solution of the system given the observation and the pde model.
Residual and selection probability on the subregion and basis
From equation (3), the residual is defined as
Rn(un+1,un+1 ,un
) =
‫ﰆ‬
Ω fn+1v − ‫ﰆ‬
‫ﰆ‬ un+1+un+1−un
+ fixed fixed v v + fixed fixed
Ω n+1

For any fixed basis φn,ωj s this equation is zero as the fixed solution is constructed by setting the k
n,ωj equation zero for each fixed basis. Using φk,+ s ∀k, j in the residual function one can compute
the residual for additional basis and writing down the residual as a long vector over subregions and
basis the following quantity is defined. Let αωk = ∥Rnωk ∥/∥Rn∥, where Rn is the global residual
vector and Rnωk is the local residual vector in ωk (as mentioned earlier) and L1 norm is used .
Let Nω be the average number of subregions where additional basis will added. Furthermore, αωj α‫ﰇ‬ j
= ‫ﰄ‬j αωj Nω, (5) ω With probability proportional to α‫ﰇ‬ j ∧ 1, the region ωj , is selected and Jj = 1 if
the region is ω selected and zero otherwise. Given subregion j is selected the k th extra basis is

Dog Vs Pig As A Pet
Dog vs Pig as a Pet
Choosing a pet should never be a snap decision; as one of the airmen from my old squadron learned
after he bought a potbellied pig. The airmen come into the section with a bandage across his nose and
bruising below his eyes. When I asked him what happened, he proceeded to tell me about his morning.
His pig was an incredibly busy little pig during the night; he piled the area rugs from the house into
the hallway, which had been laid out to prevent the pig from sliding on the laminate floor. The next
morning the pig stood by his dish and squealed like he was in trouble or dying. The airmen came
running down the hallway in a half asleep daze, tripping over the pile of area rugs landing on his face.
The airmen said the pig stopped squealing and walked up to him and sat down; as if to say I m
hungry! The airmen said he looked at the pig and said Why did I pay $2300 for you; all you are is a
miserable little turd. I think, I should have stuck with a dog. Both dogs and pigs can make a great pet,
but the proper selection rests on the owner s lifestyle, finances, and living arrangements.
Dogs can make a minimal impact on an owner s lifestyle, once trained, they can be very obedient and
shows unconditional love for their owners, such as greeting them at the door. Most can be left for the
day without worry as to what they are going to do while the owners are gone. Then, if a person travels
and can t take the dog, they can be boarded at a kennel for a week or

Essay about The Cuban Missile Crisis
When President John F. Kennedy failed with the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961, the United
States started placing fifteen Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missiles (IRBM) near Izmir, Turkey.
Even though President Kennedy said that these missiles might have questionable strategic value the
Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, made America aware of his anger and distain regarding Kennedy s
decision. Khrushchev believed that these missiles were not only an offense to him, but to his country
as well. However, the United States also possessed nuclear submarines which posed an even greater
threat than the IRBM s. The Soviet Union came to realize that they were extremely outmatched in the
area of nuclear weapons and the decision by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The EX COMM committee was unaware of Khrushchev s intentions if an invasion were to take place.
Kennedy was, however, determined to take such drastic measures this early on in the conflict and talk
of a blockade was in the air. No matter what the United States would do, officials believed that
retaliation from the Soviets was inevitable. However, anything other than the use of nuclear weapons
was deemed as a smart decision at the time. The decision to invade Cuba was finally thrown out ,
leaving only two decisions left. An air raid on Cuba could be used which would kill many people and
possibly risk nuclear missile launch. The other decision was for a blockade or quarantine to be set up
around Cuba to keep incoming missiles and supplies from reaching the coast. A quarantine of Cuba
would be carried out and seemed to be the best possible choice, under the circumstances. The decision
made by President Kennedy, saved America from nuclear war that day. If the United States had
invaded Cuba then the Soviet Union would have a launched an attack, which in turn would have
caused America to launch their missiles at Cuba and the Soviet Union. This ultimately would have led
to global nuclear warfare and the loss of life would have been substantial. The significance of the
decision not to invade Cuba was a life saving one but, other issues during the short thirteen day
timeframe would

  • 2. Peter Quill And His Walkman Essay Peter Quill and His Walkman. Guardians of the Galaxy. *SPOILERS* [Sorry] HOW THE WALKMAN CAME TO HIM Peter Quill, aka Star lord, is a half human half extraterrestrial hybrid that lived on planet earth circa the 1980 s just any other human [he didn t know he was a hybrid until later on]. Just a young boy at the time, he was fond of the simple joys in life such as family, friends, playing around and music just as any other young boy. Life went on. A grave tragedy occurred during the beginning of the movie. His mother, terminally ill, was living in her final moments while young peter quill was just outside in the hospital hallway, in despair and denial. • 3. Gold Diggers Of 1933 Essay Gold Diggers of 1933 is an example of the backstage musical where the principle characters are themselves preparing to put on a musical. From the title it is possible to deduce what the film is about, reflecting the struggle for Americans at the time. Set during the Great Depression Gold Diggers of 1933 expresses the differences in social classes as well as the representation of women at the time. The women in this film essentially live up to male expectations and yet it becomes increasingly clear that although the men hold the money in order to secure their sense of masculinity, it is the women however who are seen to manipulate the men, whether that be by getting the men to buy them material things such as the hats bought for the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, although money seems to be the main theme during the Great Depression especially, it is the power in which the women hold over the men by their sensuality and prowess which eventually allows them to move up a class by marrying these men. The opening number establishes an unusual tone for the film with a close up of Ginger Rogers singing the chorus of We re in the Money in pig latin. The chorus of this tune hints at the showgirls sex appeal as a way for earning income, an idea easily supported by their costumes which feature large coins covering their bodies. This giddy, ecstatic opening is soon interrupted by the authorities who begin seizing costumes and props from the show because of unpaid debts. Although the number itself conveys that show producer Barney Hopkins, just like the filmmakers, realizes that glitzy optimism is what troubled audiences want to see, this intrusion of (onscreen) social reality tells the viewer that the film is not ignoring the present day economic concerns in the pursuit of pure ... In fact in the World State, self habituation is so idealized that even young children are encouraged to satisfy themselves sexually as they please. This is made evident in chapter 3, where the children are observed taking part in a rudimentary sexual game (Huxley 32). Aside from physical habituation, mental satisfaction is heavy practiced as individuals in the world state consume soma, a drug that elicits utter bliss, in any occasion of mental stress. The quote Was and will make me ill, I take a gramme and only am (Huxley 111) exemplifies the extent to which citizens of the World State avoid troublesome thought and instead turn to soma because it is pleasurable. Furthermore, the idea that God/s take second place to science is another congruency between A Brave New World and Epicureanism. As stated by the quote Call it the fault of civilization. Alone and hopeless, from the day he was stranded to the day he left, it was a never ending struggle to survive taking a deep toll on him mentally and physically. Mark Watney s personality and attitude never changed, he took the worse of situations and lightened them up, while still understanding fully of the seriousness of them. Traumatizing events and life threatening circumstances never even phased Watney, he kept the same positive attitude throughout the entirety of the novel resulting in him being a static character and making little change throughout the book. Mark Watney was brought onto Ares 3 (the mission to Mars) mostly because of his charisma. When put under pressure and tough situations, he deals with this by cracking jokes, Yes, of course duct tape works in a near vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped. During high stress moments, Watney is constantly making remarks like this quote. Being able to poke fun at a bad situation is Watney s way of easing tension levels and making the best of bad situations. • 27. A Study Of Non Invasive Measurement Techniques Abstract Diabetes is considered to be one of the major health care epidemics of modern era. The determination of blood glucose concentration using the self monitoring blood glucose devices involves the chemical analysis of blood samples taken by pricking the finger or extracting blood from forearm. The pain, discomfort and inconvenience in the current invasive method have led to the feasibility study of non invasive measurement techniques. In this paper, an optical method using NIR technique based on occlusion spectroscopy is used which shows that it can be possible to measure glucose concentration in blood non invasively. Keywords: Non invasive, spectroscopy, euglycemia, hypoglycaemia. By using the Monte Carlo method, Katsuhiko et al. (2003) has developed a non invasive system using near infrared [4]. To detect the glucose level, fibre optic probes was developed that consist of a source and detector optical fibres. Both source and detector are separated by 0.65 mm, placed on the skin surface. They reported that the correlation coefficient of blood glucose predicted by near infrared and finger prick was 0.928 with a standard error of prediction of 32.2 mg/dL [4]. Another research based on near infrared has been done by Ilan Gabriely, MD et al. (1999) [5]. They were using transcutaneous near infrared spectroscopy system to monitor blood glucose levels during euglycemia and hypoglycaemia. The results proved that near infrared can be used to predict the glucose levels in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This period of time was my early childhood when the only time I became sick was when I fell during my joyous playtimes. However, as I grew older, the world and my environment changed. I always tried to keep healthy by maintaining the right diet and taking vitamins. Despite this, something terrible happened to me on December 12th, 2015. December 12th, 2015 was just another regular day for me. I was working at my part time job at the grocery store. I did the same routine tasks as any other day: said my prayers, had breakfast, showered and got prepared to go to work. That morning was a beautiful morning. The sun was shining brightly, the birds were chirping sweetly and a warm Christmas spirit was in my home. My parents were jovial as on any other day, and they both encouraged me to have a wonderful day. Work began at 8am. It was 7:16 am when I left home to go to work. I was energetic and excited. I arrived at work at 7:45 am to begin my shift. The sun was extremely hot and I began to sweat as I unlocked the outdoor trolleys. However, I did not let this deter me, as I was in an energetic mood and eager to spread the Christmas spirit to all the customers whom I would encounter. • 29. Comparison Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Prompt 1: An Exploration of Self Self is a definition of who we are, and that definition can come from two sources: ourselves and those we are close to. The resulting person is usually some combination of the two perceptions of self. In the works The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, this idea of self is explored. We see how a pair of characters meddle with their own definition of themselves and the eventual ramifications of the changes made. Interestingly, although the results are very different, the two pairs follow the same rules when it comes to the definition of self: the truth will always show itself, no matter how hard one tries to suppress it. These things are true about him. The double life and falsehood fades away in the face of his true self. Algernon has a bit less luck when it comes to what is true in his nature, but he gets the girl, so it s still a happy ending. • 35. Prohibition Of Marijuana, Heroin, And Other Drugs It is also possible that drug users are irrational decision makers and might not understand the adverse long term effects and addictive properties. Prohibition should reduce demand through legal penalties; however, since not all drug users are rational choice makers, demand can increase by creating a forbidden fruit effect. The consequences of increased use add to the complexity and costs of enforcement on both drug users and the general population. Drug users, trying to avoid the legal consequences of their use, often times interact with non users in ways that are harmful and costly. Additionally, non users are also impacted by increased taxes to pay for the enforcement, by regulations to check for drugs that take time and are inconvenient, and by becoming innocent bystanders that can get caught in the middle of attempted arrests, often with deadly affects. The long federal experiment in prohibition of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs has given us unprecedented crime and corruption combined with a manifest failure to stop the use of drugs or reduce their availability to children. The factor that determines the amount of violence created by prohibition is the level of enforcement. There are two main reasons for this. One, black markets only form when the enforcement is very strict and, two, increasingly strict enforcement leads to violence both in making arrests and as competing suppliers seek to capture market share. Finally, this structure enables us to compute the posterior or conditional distribution of the basis selection probability and conditional solution of the system given the observation and the pde model. Using φk,+ s ∀k, j in the residual function one can compute the residual for additional basis and writing down the residual as a long vector over subregions and basis the following quantity is defined. Let αωk = ∥Rnωk ∥/∥Rn∥, where Rn is the global residual vector and Rnωk is the local residual vector in ωk (as mentioned earlier) and L1 norm is used . Let Nω be the average number of subregions where additional basis will added. Furthermore, αωj α‫ﰇ‬ j = ‫ﰄ‬j αωj Nω, (5) ω With probability proportional to α‫ﰇ‬ j ∧ 1, the region ωj , is selected and Jj = 1 if the region is ω selected and zero otherwise. • 46. Dog Vs Pig As A Pet Dog vs Pig as a Pet Choosing a pet should never be a snap decision; as one of the airmen from my old squadron learned after he bought a potbellied pig. The airmen come into the section with a bandage across his nose and bruising below his eyes. When I asked him what happened, he proceeded to tell me about his morning. His pig was an incredibly busy little pig during the night; he piled the area rugs from the house into the hallway, which had been laid out to prevent the pig from sliding on the laminate floor. The next morning the pig stood by his dish and squealed like he was in trouble or dying. The airmen came running down the hallway in a half asleep daze, tripping over the pile of area rugs landing on his face. The airmen said the pig stopped squealing and walked up to him and sat down; as if to say I m hungry! The airmen said he looked at the pig and said Why did I pay $2300 for you; all you are is a miserable little turd. I think, I should have stuck with a dog. Both dogs and pigs can make a great pet, but the proper selection rests on the owner s lifestyle, finances, and living arrangements. Dogs can make a minimal impact on an owner s lifestyle, once trained, they can be very obedient and shows unconditional love for their owners, such as greeting them at the door. Most can be left for the day without worry as to what they are going to do while the owners are gone. Then, if a person travels and can t take the dog, they can be boarded at a kennel for a week or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Essay about The Cuban Missile Crisis When President John F. Kennedy failed with the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961, the United States started placing fifteen Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missiles (IRBM) near Izmir, Turkey. Even though President Kennedy said that these missiles might have questionable strategic value the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, made America aware of his anger and distain regarding Kennedy s decision. Khrushchev believed that these missiles were not only an offense to him, but to his country as well. However, the United States also possessed nuclear submarines which posed an even greater threat than the IRBM s. The Soviet Union came to realize that they were extremely outmatched in the area of nuclear weapons and the decision by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The EX COMM committee was unaware of Khrushchev s intentions if an invasion were to take place. Kennedy was, however, determined to take such drastic measures this early on in the conflict and talk of a blockade was in the air. No matter what the United States would do, officials believed that retaliation from the Soviets was inevitable. However, anything other than the use of nuclear weapons was deemed as a smart decision at the time. The decision to invade Cuba was finally thrown out , leaving only two decisions left. An air raid on Cuba could be used which would kill many people and possibly risk nuclear missile launch. The other decision was for a blockade or quarantine to be set up around Cuba to keep incoming missiles and supplies from reaching the coast. A quarantine of Cuba would be carried out and seemed to be the best possible choice, under the circumstances. The decision made by President Kennedy, saved America from nuclear war that day. If the United States had invaded Cuba then the Soviet Union would have a launched an attack, which in turn would have caused America to launch their missiles at Cuba and the Soviet Union. This ultimately would have led to global nuclear warfare and the loss of life would have been substantial. The significance of the decision not to invade Cuba was a life saving one but, other issues during the short thirteen day timeframe would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
