The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an exam administered by the GATE Committee on behalf of the MHRD. It is used for admissions to postgraduate programs in IITs, IISc, and other institutes. Scores are also used for recruitment by PSUs. The exam tests comprehension in undergraduate engineering subjects. Scores are valid for 3 years. The GATE paper contains both multiple choice and numerical answer questions over 3 hours. Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s

Human Resources Development.
The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME,
M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance

with attractive remuneration.
GATE exam primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate in

The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numerical

questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

a total of 15 marks will be on General Aptitude (GA).
In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS,

Pattern of Question Papers
(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks

objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four
answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the
correct answer(s).

Negative Marking
