INTRODUCTION
 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN TODAYS
AUTOMOBILES IS VERY A COMPLICATED ONE
 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTAINS
1. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS,
2. HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS,
3. ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AND
4. COMPUTER SYSTEMS.
WHAT IS TRANSMISSION
 Transmission is the device that is connected
to the back of the engine and send the
power from the engine to the drive wheel.
 Purpose of the transmission is to provide
high torque at the time of starting and
moving the vehicle, at the time of hill
climbing.
TYPES OF AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
 REAR WHEEL DRIVE
 FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
REAR WHEEL DRIVE
 In most of the vehicles transmission is
mounted on the rear wheels
POWER FLOW ON THIS SYSTEM IS SIMPLE AND
STRAIGHT FORWARD GOING FROM THE ENGINE,
THROUGH THE TORQUE CONVERTER, THEN ALSO
THROUGH THE DRIVE SHAFT UNTIL IT REACH THE
FINAL DRIVE WHERE IT SPLIT AND SENT TO THE
TWO REAR WHEEL.
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
 On a front wheel car, the transmission is
combined with engine itself and is called as
transaxle.
TRANSAXIL
 Transaxil is a device setup in the
transmission gear box, clutch, finaldrive,
which all are into a single unit.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
COMPONENTS
 Planetary gear sets
 Hydraulic systems
1. Oil pump
2. Valve body
3. Clutches
4. Band
 Seals and gaskets
 Torque converters
 Governor
 Computer controls
PLANETARY GEAR SETS
 All gear set in which all of the
gears are in one planet.
 The control gear is called as sun
gear, in mesh with the circular
grouping of gears called planet
gears
SIDE VIEW OF THE PLANETARY
GEARS
CLUTCH PACKS
 A clutch is a machanical device for the
transmission power from one component to
another.
BANDS
 A band is a steel strap with friction material
bonded to the inside surface
 A flexible metal ring fits around the outside of the
clutch hosing. It tichtends to engage the gears,
and loosens to release them.
TORQUE CONVERTOR
TORQUE CONVERTOR
A torque convertor is
a fluid coupling that is
used to transfer
rotating power from a
prime mover, such as
an internal
combustion engine or
electric motor to a
rotating driven load
COMPUTER CONTROLS
The computer uses sensor on the
engine and transmission to detect
such things as throttle position ,vehicle
speed, engine load, break pedal
position, etc…
Once the computer receives this
information then it will sends signal to
a solenoid pack inside the
transmission
AFTER FITTING ALL AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS,
ORDINARY CAR’S GEAR
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
CAR’S GEAR
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN
FOUR WHEEL DRIVE
CONCLUSION
All the cars in india are changing
to automatic transmission. They
are better than the manual
transmission both in performance
and pickup in normal roads and in
hill climbing…
