1. Audience Profile – Genre: Rap Target Audience: 15 – 30 years old
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why
My main target audience is denoted as being 15-30. I am looking at the
demographic of teenage years following into young adults. By being
able to identify my target market I will have the ability to focus on
appeals to them when it comes buying a music magazine. This can be
from who is in the issue to promotional offers such as free downloads.
As well as this age range I don’t want my magazine to be pinned to one
gender because I am looking to appeal to wider audience. Although at
the moment due to the genre of the music being rap, I am feeling that
this magazine will be leaning to a more masculine audience. This is due
to the constant house style being of a more male oriented layout colors
such as blues, blacks, reds and greys.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
I tend to lean towards that my magazine will be aimed at the people in
the categories E,D and C2 in the Socio-Economic Needs spectrum. This
is due to magazines being normally aimed at the working class
community. It is done by covering artists that have come from the same
background as the working class so they relate to the position the artist
was in, at one stage.
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy
of needs
In accordance with Katz’ Uses and Gratifications Theory, the ability of
the audience to connect with the main image on magazine front cover
is important, as well as being able to ‘personally identify’ with the
image from their situation they are in (Working Class). They could also
be ‘explorers’ (Maslow) because the magazine might teach the reader
about the genre, which therefore ‘educates’ (Katz) the audience. ‘Social
Climbers’ (Maslow) are represented with an inspiration in the rap genre
because of their desire to improve their status in society like their idols
Jay-Z and Drake (gold chains , money and muscle cars)
Stereotype(s):
Mix of Ethnic groups (Mainly Black/Mixed Race), male, group
gatherings/parties, teenage to young adults.
