Target Audience:
Gender and Age (Hartleyās 7 Subjectivities) and why
The denotation of the target audience for my rock music magazine is
that the magazine is mainly aimed at the male gender as the majority
(54.7% - KERRANG! figures) of people who purchase the magazine are
male. This is because it follows the stereotypical profile of a rock fan,
which is more likely to be male. Also the age group that this magazine
is mainly aimed at are from the ages of 15-24.The age group is this
specific group because if you like rock music it depends on the taste of
the person, therefore being brought up with the genreās era does not
matter.
Socio-Economic Needs and why:
The denotation of the socio ā economic needs of the magazineās
readership demographic is going to be class D and class E. This is
because from a stereotypical view people who enjoy indie/rock music
or have the life style associated with ārockersā can not afford expensive
magazines and are often quite rebellious due to their youth and
inexperience.
Katzā Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslowās Hierarchy of needs
In accordance with Katzā theory I would aim to āinform and educateā
because wherever the reader is, or whatever they are doing, I am
trying to make the magazine as interesting and factual as I can, while
keeping them engaged at the same time.
The magazine would also therefore aspire to appeal to āsurvivorsā
(Maslow) because I would like to ensure security and routine for the
readers, meaning that they will receive up to date information about
artists on and bands/acts they are interested in and reflect the current
zeitgeist.
Stereotype(s):
The reader of this magazine will look scruffy, wear dark colored
clothes, but still designer.
