Audience Profile – 
Genre: Rock Music Target Audience: 
Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and 
why 
The gender of my target audience is both males and 
females, In terms of Hartley, men have motives for 
action and movements- so rock music has 
performances related to lots of actions. But I can also 
say that females would be appealed too, because the 
genre of the music is open and varied compared to 
others. Age-wise, stereotypically teenagers (17/18) 
likes fast, high tempo’d music but also those aged 
40 plus for example, would like the old Rock music 
associated with their childhood, and sense 
worthiness of themselves too. 
Socio-Economic Needs and why: 
Socio-Economic needs that my target audiences 
would go through may include economic problems, 
such as debts and lack of savings. This will affect my 
magazine, as it reduces the chances of them buying 
it. Therefore the audiences (especially those who are 
in their teens) would appreciate cheap prices. 
However, the magazine can cover some other social 
needs, as people can interact and relate (Katz) with 
the magazine, as it creates an atmosphere that lifts 
people’s spirits up, or that they can talk about with 
other people.

Audience Profile – Genre: Rock Music 
Target Audience: 
Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs 
In terms of Katz- uses and Gratifications, Rock music magazine are able to entertain the audiences by 
including information that they would be pleased to know, such as something that they never knew 
before (thus news). Rock genre magazines can educate the readers about what the world of Rock music 
profession is like, giving them insight to finding it out themselves. Social interaction can be triggered as 
well, because if there are people who can relate with each other on the topic of Rock music, they can have 
a connection and have a sense of belong to something. In terms of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, I think 
Survivors will like this genre, as it consists of a regular issue release, with almost the same or similar 
bands being presented for a particular publication. As each publication mentions different bands 
(although some are similar), with audience preference, they are most likely to pick one publication and 
stick to it (wanting routine: Maslow). Furthermore, Explorers (Maslow) may be fulfilled because they seek 
for personal growth and social change. Personal growth can be achieved through reading information that 
they didn’t know before, and perhaps the feeling of influencing social change can be achieved through, 
reading a rock music genre magazine in the society where Pop and electronic music is rising in 
popularity. 
Stereotype(s): 
A Stereotypical target audience for my magazine would be someone who is a traditional and new man, as 
in contemporary society they will have the money and time to buy and read a magazine. Stereotypically, 
middle aged people are unaware of popular culture, therefore they are able to read something that they 
personally like. For women, someone who are traditional would most likely not read this genre of 
magazine, because it may be too active, not feminine and perhaps impolite. However, women who likes 
Rock genre is perhaps stereotypically less dominant than the women who will like Pop genre magazines, 
for example. This is because they don’t go with the top music in the society nowadays, but have 
individuality and can find their identity through the magazine because it is unique (Katz). However, these 
are just assumptions and because of this, my target audiences are a range, to fit as many individual as 
possible.

Audience Profile – Genre: Rock Music Target Audience: Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and why The gender of my target audience is both males and females, In terms of Hartley, men have motives for action and movements- so rock music has performances related to lots of actions. But I can also say that females would be appealed too, because the genre of the music is open and varied compared to others. Age-wise, stereotypically teenagers (17/18) likes fast, high tempo’d music but also those aged 40 plus for example, would like the old Rock music associated with their childhood, and sense worthiness of themselves too. Socio-Economic Needs and why: Socio-Economic needs that my target audiences would go through may include economic problems, such as debts and lack of savings. This will affect my magazine, as it reduces the chances of them buying it. Therefore the audiences (especially those who are in their teens) would appreciate cheap prices. However, the magazine can cover some other social needs, as people can interact and relate (Katz) with the magazine, as it creates an atmosphere that lifts people’s spirits up, or that they can talk about with other people.   • 2. 2 Audience Profile – Genre: Rock Music Target Audience: Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs In terms of Katz- uses and Gratifications, Rock music magazine are able to entertain the audiences by including information that they would be pleased to know, such as something that they never knew before (thus news). Rock genre magazines can educate the readers about what the world of Rock music profession is like, giving them insight to finding it out themselves. Social interaction can be triggered as well, because if there are people who can relate with each other on the topic of Rock music, they can have a connection and have a sense of belong to something. In terms of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, I think Survivors will like this genre, as it consists of a regular issue release, with almost the same or similar bands being presented for a particular publication. As each publication mentions different bands (although some are similar), with audience preference, they are most likely to pick one publication and stick to it (wanting routine: Maslow). Furthermore, Explorers (Maslow) may be fulfilled because they seek for personal growth and social change. Personal growth can be achieved through reading information that they didn’t know before, and perhaps the feeling of influencing social change can be achieved through, reading a rock music genre magazine in the society where Pop and electronic music is rising in popularity. Stereotype(s): A Stereotypical target audience for my magazine would be someone who is a traditional and new man, as in contemporary society they will have the money and time to buy and read a magazine. Stereotypically, middle aged people are unaware of popular culture, therefore they are able to read something that they personally like. For women, someone who are traditional would most likely not read this genre of magazine, because it may be too active, not feminine and perhaps impolite. However, women who likes Rock genre is perhaps stereotypically less dominant than the women who will like Pop genre magazines, for example. This is because they don’t go with the top music in the society nowadays, but have individuality and can find their identity through the magazine because it is unique (Katz). However, these are just assumptions and because of this, my target audiences are a range, to fit as many individual as possible. Wednesday, 15 October 14
