The document discusses how the magazine represents social groups. It aims its content at a younger, exploratory audience. While the topics of fashion and gossip suggest a female target audience, the images may appeal to males as well. Some images portray female artists in a positive light, showing strength and success, while another image challenges stereotypes by depicting the less glamorous side of celebrity.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
1. How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
2. My Magazine
O Aimed at a younger demographic model,
an audience of young adults that would fit
into the ‘explorers’ category
3. Social Groups
O Upon observation, the information
featured on my magazine is suitable for a
female audience, with stereotypically
female topics such as fashion and gossip.
The obscene images might catch a male
gaze but the content doesn’t immediately
appeal to an audience that is
stereotypically masculine, but doesn’t
portray females in a positive way within
the media. However, the colour scheme is
not typically feminine or masculine, which
is a positive feature of my magazine,
raising the chances of a male audience
purchasing it.
4. Social Groups
O The images displayed offer a
positive connotation of female
strength and individuality. The
pose the artist is in
demonstrates her success and
her confidence, and the pull
quote is situated next to the
image to display how successful
she is. Buzz words include the
word romance in this genre of
music magazine as readers of
this audience will be compelled
to read about an artist’s social
and romantic life
5. Social Groups
O A challenging aspect is perhaps
the other image on the double
page spread. It depicts a whole
other personality of the artist and
suggests that life isn’t as
glamorous as initially
represented. This offers new
ideas about the stereotypical
female artist and the celebrity
persona, suggesting that they
aren’t as elegant as they seem.
