Abstract The present study emphasizes on the survey and assessment of groundwater quality, sources of ground water contamination, variation of groundwater quality and which will be further purified with the use of nanomaterials. The bases for groundwater quality assessment are underground water (tube-well) and representative monitoring network enabling determination of chemical status of the underground water (tube-well). For this study, water samples were collected from 5 tube wells representing the area of 5 villages (Golaghati, Takarjala, Jampui, Mandwi, and Simna) of Tripura (India). The water samples were analyzed for physico -chemical parameters like Total Dissolved Solid, Total Hardness, Iron, Chloride, Calcium, Magnesium etc using standard techniques in the laboratory and compared with the standards. The results obtained in this study and the Association rules will be helpful for monitoring and managing presence of heavy metals in underground water in the modern research area in terms of water quality. The parameters: pH, TDS, Total hardness and content of Iron, Chloride, Calcium, Magnesium and BOD were studied and compared with the standard values prescribed by ICMR, WHO, APHA and ISU/BIS. The present investigation revealed that the quality of water of a source slightly varies from area to area tube wells but was found that the underground water samples are fit for drinking and utility purpose. Physico-chemical analysis of open well water samples was carried out from 10 sampling locations
in Bhimavaram town during three seasons namely summer, rainy and winter of 2012-‟13 are presented. The
quality analysis was made through the estimation of physico-chemical parameters such as pH,
Turbidity, EC, TDS, Cl–, SO4
2–, NO3
–, PO4
3–, D.O, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, F–, Na+, K+ and BOD. Each parameter was
compared with its standard permissible limit as prescribed by World Health Organization (WHO) and BIS
standard to assess the suitability of drinking and domestic purposes. The analytical results of groundwater
samples shows that that certain parameters namely PH, D.O and Fluoride were found within the desirable limits
by BIS. However, Turbidity, EC, TH, TDS, BOD, Chloride, Sulphate, Phosphate, Nitrate, Sodium, Potassium,
Calcium, were exceding the desirable limit throughout the investigation period in all locations.The results of
analysis reveal that the ground water of the area was not suitable for human consumption and domestic use due
to the influence saltwater intrusion, sewage, Industrial effluents and high urban concentration are the probable
sources for the variation of water quality in the study area

Assessment of Water Quality of Lakes for Drinking and Irrigation Purposes in ...IJERA Editor
Lake water is an important source for drinking, domestic and irrigation purposes in rural and urban India. The present study aims at evaluating the water quality of various lakes in Raipur city, Chhatisgarh. There existed 154 lakes in the city but it shrinked to 85 in number due to encroachment or drying up of lakes. Twenty seven prominent lakes are selected to study and evaluate the water quality for drinking and irrigation purposes. The water samples were collected and analysed for pH, Turbidity, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Alkalinity, Hardness, Sodium(Na+), Potassium(K+), Calcium(Ca2+), Magnesium(Mg2+), Bicarbonate(HCO3-), Sulphate (SO42-), Nitrate (NO3−),Phosphate(PO43-) Fluoride(F-), Chloride (Cl−), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Coliform (TC) and Fecal Coliform (FC). There are variations for pH (6.59-8.29), EC (382-2330μS/cm), Turbidity (1-232 NTU), TDS (244-1491 mg/L), Alkalinity (120-600 mg/L), Hardness (66-330mg/L), Na+(37-430 mg/L), K+ (8-253 mg/L), Ca2+ (9-90 mg/L), Mg2+(3-26 mg/L), SO42- (5-200 mg/L), NO3-(0-19 mg/L), PO43-(0.19-5.3 mg/L), F-(0.18-1.41 mg/L) and Cl- (46-388 mg/L), DO(1-8.6 mg/L), BOD (0.1-11.3 mg/L), COD (8-118 mg/L), Total Coliform( 15-3600 MPN/100ml) and Fecal Coliform (4-240 MPN/100 ml). The results have been compared with the drinking water standard prescribed by Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS). All the physiochemical parameters are within the prescribed limit except turbidity, fecal & total coliform. The Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) and salinity hazards are studied to classify the water for irrigation uses. It is found that lake water is suitable for irrigation purposes.

Water is essential to sustain the life. Water samples have collected from a different urban area of H. D. Kote
town of Mysore district from different sources such as hand pump, public taps, and stored household drinking
water. Physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water samples were analysed following the
standard methods to evaluate the quality of drinking water. All physic-chemical parameters are within the
permissible limit to WHO. The microbiological analysis shows that that t nearly 53 % of the samples were
observed with coliform contamination. The significant difference among water sources regarding total plate
count was observed, where stored household water has relatively higher compared to tap and borewell water
exceeding the standard limit. Both hand pump and the tap water were not detected with any E. coli
contamination whereas 80% of the household stored water samples have shown E. coli contamination. The
presence of significant counts of coliforms in stored household water indicates post poor sanitation and
existence of human activities. Attention should be given to the collection, storage, and management by
additional treatment to maintain and prevent excessive microbial growth

Mula-Mutha River in pune (India) is one of the most vulnerable water bodies to pollution because of their
role in carrying municipal and industrial wastes and run-offs from agricultural lands in their vast drainage basins. Despite of the various standards and laws made by government many industries were discharging their waste directly into the river making its quality poor day by day. The restoration of river water quality has been a major challenge to the environmental managers. Detailed research and analysis is needed to evaluate different process and mechanism involved in polluting water. The aim of the work under the title is to analyze the river by dividing it into various sampling station. The present study also identifies the critical pollutants affecting the river water quality during its course through the city. The
indices have been computed for pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon season at four locations, Khadakwasla , Sangamwadi, Vithalwadi &Bund Garden. It was found that the water quality ranged from satisfactory to marginal category at Khadakwasla and fell under very poor category at all other locations.This research have a vast future scope as the rapid industrialization results in formation of toxic contaminants leading to enormous damages to environment directly putting the lives at risk. Thus, this
gathered information would be handy and helpful for preventing or at-least reducing the hazardous impacts.

Water quality is an important criterion used for evaluating the suitability of water for drinking, irrigation and recreation.
During present investigation, water quality variables of ground water were assessed from Peerwadi open well of Uran Beach, Dist
– Raigad, Navi Mumbai from October 2010 to August 2013. Various physico-chemical parameters assessed includes pH, Temperature, Total solids (TS), Total dissolved solids (TDS), Total suspended solids (TSS), Conductance, Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Salinity, Chloride, Alkalinity, Total hardness, Calcium hardness and Magnesium
hardness. This study reveals that except the high values of chlorides and salinity, values of other physico-chemical variables are within the guideline values of WHO Standard for potable water. The quality of water from Peerwadi open well of Uran Beach was found to be safe and utilizable for drinking and other purposes.

ABSTRACT- For every life form, water is an essential natural element. Ever increasing growth of population, especially
in developing country like India, have affected not only surface but also ground water quality and is main cause for
environmental pollution. The most possible sources of soil, water and plant pollutions are sewage sludge, residues of
industrial factories and intensive fertilization. Increased organic matter (from the sewage) breaking down in the river
reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water body as the decomposition process uses up the available dissolved
oxygen. Microbial pathogens introduced by sewage into surface or groundwater can threaten public health, as well as
affect ecosystem health and function. Today as demand for fresh water intensifies, the use of municipal or sewage
wastewater as alternative source of water for irrigation purpose is also a common practice. The present study was
conducted to assess the physicochemical parameters of the Rispana river where sewage is dumped and also effect of this
sewage wastewater on selected plant Vigna radiata. The findings of the study indicated a direct influence of sewage
wastewater on the plantlets and decrease in overall growth of plant with increase in concentration of wastewater.

The Effluent Quality Discharged and Its Impacts on the Receiving Environment ...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
The study evaluates the performance of Kacyiru Sewage Treatment Plant and its effluent impacts on the receiving wetland. Influent and effluent wastewaters as well as receiving wetland water qualities were measured from April to September 2019, at Kacyiru estate. The average removal efficiency (%) of the parameters such as TN, TP, COD, BOD 5 were recorded as 46.57; 61.49; 50.51; 66.79 respectively. The parameters such as pH, TDS, temperature value, were recorded within the prescribed limit of Rwanda standards for domestic wastewater discharge. The other parameters such as NTU, TN, TP, TSS, BOD 5 and Fecal coliforms were not complying with National standards requirements for domestic wastewater discharge. The finding showed that the excess nutrient observed may present potential sources of pollution in wetland and decrease the oxygen levels which affect the water living organisms. The discharged effluents contain microbes which can negatively devastate the receiving environment, thus the effect of discharged wastewater on environment is significant.
An Assessment of Water Quality of Gomati River Particular Relevant To Physico...IJERA Editor
The study was carried out to determine physicochemical characteristics, residues of pesticide and heavy metals in water of Gomati River in Lucknow to understand its ecology. In this study the water samples were collected from 5 different locations from upstream to downstream of Lucknow from all three sites i.e, right, middle and left. Analyte including organochlorine pesticide (OCP’s) and herbicides (H) α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, op-DDT, pp-DDT, pp-DDE, op-DDE, op-DDD, pp-DDD, α- endosulfan, β-endosulfan, endosulfan SO4, dicofol, heptachlor, alachlor, atrazine, butachlor, pendimethalin and heavy metals Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni were analysed. The method for pesticide residues was based on d-SPE. The quantification was done by GC-ECD and confirmation by GC-MS/MS. Heavy metals were analysed by AAS.The results revealed that river water was contaminated with HCH, DDT, alachlor, heptachlor and butachlor at hanuman sethu and gomati bairaj which may contribute to toxicity in the ecosystem of the river. The recovery ranged from 76.6 to 96.2 %, with relative standard deviations below 14%. The results revealed that river water was contaminated with ∑HCH (ND - 0.024 μg/ml), endosulfan (ND - 0.127 μg/ml), dicofol (ND - 0.041 μg/ml), alachlor (ND - 0.035 μg/ml), heptachlor (ND - 0.107 μg/ml) and butachlor (ND - 0.135 μg/ml) which may contribute to toxicity in the ecosystem of river. The heavy metals found in river water were in range: Cu (0.004 - 0.016 μg/ml); Fe (0.554 - 1.179 μg/ml); Mn (0.044 - 0.112 μg/ml); Pb (0.167 - 0.327 μg/ml) and Zn (0.046 - 0.168 μg/ml). The physicochemical parameter; pH (6.8 - 7.5), electrical conductivity (0.533 - 0.764 ms/cm), total dissolved solids (202 - 388 mg/l), chloride (17.99 - 35.98 mg/l) were recorded. The water quality has been found unsafe for civil consumption. The higher level of pollutants polluting water quality of river are disturbing the ecology of river and affecting human health directly and indirectly.A

water. Physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water samples were analysed following the
standard methods to evaluate the quality of drinking water. All physic-chemical parameters are within the
permissible limit to WHO. The microbiological analysis shows that that t nearly 53 % of the samples were
observed with coliform contamination. The significant difference among water sources regarding total plate
count was observed, where stored household water has relatively higher compared to tap and borewell water
exceeding the standard limit. Both hand pump and the tap water were not detected with any E. coli
contamination whereas 80% of the household stored water samples have shown E. coli contamination. The
presence of significant counts of coliforms in stored household water indicates post poor sanitation and
existence of human activities. Attention should be given to the collection, storage, and management by
additional treatment to maintain and prevent excessive microbial growth

Mula-Mutha River in pune (India) is one of the most vulnerable water bodies to pollution because of their
role in carrying municipal and industrial wastes and run-offs from agricultural lands in their vast drainage basins. Despite of the various standards and laws made by government many industries were discharging their waste directly into the river making its quality poor day by day. The restoration of river water quality has been a major challenge to the environmental managers. Detailed research and analysis is needed to evaluate different process and mechanism involved in polluting water. The aim of the work under the title is to analyze the river by dividing it into various sampling station. The present study also identifies the critical pollutants affecting the river water quality during its course through the city. The
indices have been computed for pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon season at four locations, Khadakwasla , Sangamwadi, Vithalwadi &Bund Garden. It was found that the water quality ranged from satisfactory to marginal category at Khadakwasla and fell under very poor category at all other locations.This research have a vast future scope as the rapid industrialization results in formation of toxic contaminants leading to enormous damages to environment directly putting the lives at risk. Thus, this
gathered information would be handy and helpful for preventing or at-least reducing the hazardous impacts.

Physico-chemical characteristics of water are of vital concern to human as it is directly related to human health.
Water quality is an important criterion used for evaluating the suitability of water for drinking, irrigation and recreation.
During present investigation, water quality variables of ground water were assessed from Peerwadi open well of Uran Beach, Dist
– Raigad, Navi Mumbai from October 2010 to August 2013. Various physico-chemical parameters assessed includes pH, Temperature, Total solids (TS), Total dissolved solids (TDS), Total suspended solids (TSS), Conductance, Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Salinity, Chloride, Alkalinity, Total hardness, Calcium hardness and Magnesium
hardness. This study reveals that except the high values of chlorides and salinity, values of other physico-chemical variables are within the guideline values of WHO Standard for potable water. The quality of water from Peerwadi open well of Uran Beach was found to be safe and utilizable for drinking and other purposes.

ABSTRACT- For every life form, water is an essential natural element. Ever increasing growth of population, especially
in developing country like India, have affected not only surface but also ground water quality and is main cause for
environmental pollution. The most possible sources of soil, water and plant pollutions are sewage sludge, residues of
industrial factories and intensive fertilization. Increased organic matter (from the sewage) breaking down in the river
reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water body as the decomposition process uses up the available dissolved
oxygen. Microbial pathogens introduced by sewage into surface or groundwater can threaten public health, as well as
affect ecosystem health and function. Today as demand for fresh water intensifies, the use of municipal or sewage
wastewater as alternative source of water for irrigation purpose is also a common practice. The present study was
conducted to assess the physicochemical parameters of the Rispana river where sewage is dumped and also effect of this
sewage wastewater on selected plant Vigna radiata. The findings of the study indicated a direct influence of sewage
wastewater on the plantlets and decrease in overall growth of plant with increase in concentration of wastewater.

The Effluent Quality Discharged and Its Impacts on the Receiving Environment ...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
The study evaluates the performance of Kacyiru Sewage Treatment Plant and its effluent impacts on the receiving wetland. Influent and effluent wastewaters as well as receiving wetland water qualities were measured from April to September 2019, at Kacyiru estate. The average removal efficiency (%) of the parameters such as TN, TP, COD, BOD 5 were recorded as 46.57; 61.49; 50.51; 66.79 respectively. The parameters such as pH, TDS, temperature value, were recorded within the prescribed limit of Rwanda standards for domestic wastewater discharge. The other parameters such as NTU, TN, TP, TSS, BOD 5 and Fecal coliforms were not complying with National standards requirements for domestic wastewater discharge. The finding showed that the excess nutrient observed may present potential sources of pollution in wetland and decrease the oxygen levels which affect the water living organisms. The discharged effluents contain microbes which can negatively devastate the receiving environment, thus the effect of discharged wastewater on environment is significant.

The study was carried out to determine physicochemical characteristics, residues of pesticide and heavy metals in water of Gomati River in Lucknow to understand its ecology. In this study the water samples were collected from 5 different locations from upstream to downstream of Lucknow from all three sites i.e, right, middle and left. Analyte including organochlorine pesticide (OCP’s) and herbicides (H) α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, op-DDT, pp-DDT, pp-DDE, op-DDE, op-DDD, pp-DDD, α- endosulfan, β-endosulfan, endosulfan SO4, dicofol, heptachlor, alachlor, atrazine, butachlor, pendimethalin and heavy metals Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni were analysed. The method for pesticide residues was based on d-SPE. The quantification was done by GC-ECD and confirmation by GC-MS/MS. Heavy metals were analysed by AAS.The results revealed that river water was contaminated with HCH, DDT, alachlor, heptachlor and butachlor at hanuman sethu and gomati bairaj which may contribute to toxicity in the ecosystem of the river. The recovery ranged from 76.6 to 96.2 %, with relative standard deviations below 14%. The results revealed that river water was contaminated with ∑HCH (ND - 0.024 μg/ml), endosulfan (ND - 0.127 μg/ml), dicofol (ND - 0.041 μg/ml), alachlor (ND - 0.035 μg/ml), heptachlor (ND - 0.107 μg/ml) and butachlor (ND - 0.135 μg/ml) which may contribute to toxicity in the ecosystem of river. The heavy metals found in river water were in range: Cu (0.004 - 0.016 μg/ml); Fe (0.554 - 1.179 μg/ml); Mn (0.044 - 0.112 μg/ml); Pb (0.167 - 0.327 μg/ml) and Zn (0.046 - 0.168 μg/ml). The physicochemical parameter; pH (6.8 - 7.5), electrical conductivity (0.533 - 0.764 ms/cm), total dissolved solids (202 - 388 mg/l), chloride (17.99 - 35.98 mg/l) were recorded. The water quality has been found unsafe for civil consumption. The higher level of pollutants polluting water quality of river are disturbing the ecology of river and affecting human health directly and indirectly.A

Water pollution is one of the major global environmental problems. It is an acute problem almost in all major rivers and water reservoirs in India. Water pollution is increasing and becoming severe day by day and posing a great risk to human health and other living organisms. There is growing concern on the deterioration of ground water quality due to geogenic and anthropogenic activities. Present investigation aims at insight about the level of contaminants of surface water, groundwater and sediment analysis of selected rivers of Krishna River located in Mahuli and Urmodi river located in Nagthane, Satara district. An attempt has been made to assess the water quality, sediment analysis of the samples. Dissolved oxygen content of the water samples was observed quite well in limits such as in Krishna river Mahuli DO was 27.68mg L and in Urmodi river Nagthane was13.68mg .In the present study, COD value was observed by 720mg l at surface water of Krishna River Mahuliand 1320 mg l at surface water sample of Urmodi river Nagthane. As expected groundwater samples showed values of hardness within a limit. There is an urgent need for more representative samples to be used to go beyond preliminary assessment as reported in the present study for making appropriate recommendations. Abstract River environment is one of the highly water yielding place for present generation. It is influenced by geomorphic processes like shoreline erosion, siltation, sedimentation, flooding etc. Modification in river ecology is also influenced by the estuaries and sea. Most of the population will be alongside the river basin fetching river water for daily use. In this project work, Udyavara river basin is taken into consideration which is also prevailing at the coastal belt of Karnataka in Udupi district. Udyavara River incorporates the catchment that feed into the estuaries, coastlines and the groundwater that underlies the river basin. Increasing population, industrialization, solid waste dumping and improper sanitary conditions may contaminate the river water for future use. This study considers implementing of measures aimed at maintaining and improving the aquatic environment by restriction to adverse anthropogenic activities. Recently environmental problems have arisen in the river basin which is leading to monitoring and settling environmental objectives for groundwater and surface water pollution. The overall objective of the present study is to prevent deterioration and achieve environmental improvement. It can be concluded based on the results that environmental problems can be solved in this stage and sustainability can be achieved. Geologically, it is underlain mainly by Peninsular gneisses of Archean age followed by Gulcheru and Vemapalli
formations comprising quartzites, conglomerates, dolomites and shales. Major geomorphic units are
denudational hills, residual hills, pediments, pediplains, structural hills and valleys. The study area experiences a
semiarid climate. Physicochemical parameters viz., pH, total hardness, calcium, chloride, total dissolved solids,
fluoride were analyzed. Most of parameter show higher value than permissible limit in pre and post monsoon.
Further, a moderation in water quality was observed after the monsoon season, which can be attributed to a
possible dilution due to groundwater recharge People dependent on this water may prone to health hazard.
Therefore some effective measures are urgently required to enhance the quality of water in these areas

because of the contaminated inflows and surrounding influence. There is a serious need for appropriate water
quality monitoring for future planning and management of Lake and other type of water resources. Quality of
water in Rudrasagar Lake, Tripura, India has been investigated in this paper. Water Quality Index (WQI) was
applied in Rudrasagar Lake India using water quality parameters like pH, Turbidity, Conductivity, Hardness,
Alkalinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand and Nitrate. Based on the importance of the
parameter for aquatic life the relative weight is assigned to each water quality parameter ranged from 1 to 4.
Tests were performed on site using electronic measuring device as well as on Laboratory with samples of water
collected from different locations of Rudrasagar Lake. It shows that water quality of Rudrasagar Lake falls
within the ‗good water‘ category but marginally. Continuous monitoring of Rudrasagar lake is suggested for
proper management.

The study examined the physicochemical and heavy metal analysis of municipal water supply along
the distribution channels from source (raw water) to end user points of Kaduna metropolis. Water samples were
collected from the raw water sources of the treatment plants in the metropolis (Malali and Barnawa water
works), treated water from the treatment plant reservoirs, the three booster stations (Kawo, Lugard Hall and
Tudun Wada) and randomly from residential areas which includes; Malali, Barnawa, Tudun Wada, Marafa,
Kabala costain, Badiko, Kurmin Mashi and UnguwanSunusi area of the metropolis. The samples were analyzed
for pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium
hardness, alkalinity, sulphate, nitrate, DO, BOD, COD, iron and free CO2 using standard procedure described
by American public Health Association(APHA),heavy metals such as chromium, lead, nickel, copper and
cadmium were analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy, The result obtained was compared with the
WHO and the Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water set by the Standard Organization of Nigeria(SON). pH and
turbidity of all samples from raw water to treated water delivered to end users with mean values of pH of 5.67
for raw water and a range of 4.48-4.60 for treated water all falls above the permissible limit of 6.5-8.5, turbidity
values of 1883NTU for raw water and a range of 11.60-41.36NTU for treated water all falls above the
permissible limit of 5NTU for portable water other parameters were all within the standard limit, copper and
iron were detected in all samples but within the permissible limit ,lead ,chromium, nickel and cadmium were
above maximum permissible in all samples analyzed

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing

Abstract
Assessment of physicochemical characteristics of drinking water have numerous and severe implication for public health. Ground
water as well as the stream water is the main source of drinking water in rural area of Chawmanu R.D. Block, Tripura, India. In
the present study water is collected from different locations of 3 Gaon Panchayat of the said area. Physicochemical parameters
are analysed in March, 2014. Results of the study reveals the fact that the water sources are very much polluted and is not
suitable for drinking. Almost in all of the locations, Turbidity (TU), BOD, COD and iron value is found above the standard limit
according to BIS. To overcome such problems Government authority as well as other public organization should come forward to
cope up this problem and provided safe drinking water for the rural residents of Tripura state particularly at Chawmanu.

1. INTRODUCTION
Access to the reliable source of safe water is essential for the
sustainable development which is depends upon the
chemical and physical characteristics of water [1]. Ground
water is the main source of drinking water in both rural and
urban areas along with supply of water for agriculture and
industrial needs [2-3]. Presently more than 1 billion people
worldwide are lacking to the access of safe drinking water
[4]. Same is true for the Tripura state where 330 habitations
are still uncovered for purified potable water sources, in
addition with no good health care facilities in more than
1276 distant location of the state. Therefore hill people, who
live in remote rural areas, are suffering from water crisis due
to drying up of regular water sources during dry season. As
a result they are compelled to use contaminated water
sources (streams/hand-dug well, ring well etc.) for drinking
and domestic purposes, that consequently leads to the
breakout of water borne diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea etc.
As a consequence the quality of drinking water sources is a
vital concern because of its limited availability for human
welfare [5]. Though water cycle is a dynamic system quality
of fresh water is mainly controlled by natural as well as
anthropogenic factors [1, 6]. The physicochemical
contaminants that adversely degrade the water quality is
from a variety of sources, including land application of
agricultural chemicals and organic wastes, infiltration of
irrigation water, septic tanks and infiltration of effluent from
sewage treatment plants, pits, lagoons and ponds used for
storage [7]. So the quality of potable water from various
sources is likely to change on temporal and spatial basis and
the change in the natural equilibrium restrains the usefulness
of the water for its designated use [5]. In recent times
because of rapid urbanization and growth of population, an
enormous demand for fresh water is raising day by day in
developing countries like India. Due to the massive needs of
freshwater both in rural and urban areas for domestic and
industrial purposes, it is essential that its quality should be
maintained [8], specially for the state of Tripura where the
people of rural areas are greatly depended upon the
underground water, stream water or other surface water
sources for drinking and other domestic purposes. So, it is
become crucial to monitor the quality of water which is used
for drinking and domestic purposes and also to find out the
remedial measures to protect freshwater sources. Because,
whenever the fresh water sources are infected their quality
cannot be renovated by stopping the pollutants from the
source [9-12].
The present study was focused to asses the physicochemical
characteristics of drinking water sources viz. hand-dug well,
ring well and stream water, of the Chawmanu R.D. Block of
Dhalai district of Tripura state. Because of limited study
very little is known about the physicochemical
characteristics of water resources of Tripura. Regular study
of water quality monitoring may be considered as reference
for the society to get cautious about the coming decline of
their environmental health. So from the health point of view
the water quality of this state should be assessed
scientifically and continuous monitoring of the water quality
might be helpful to contrivance ways to protect the drinking
water sources of the state [13].

2. MATERIALS AND METHODS
Water samples were collected during the month of March,
2014 (dry season) from different locations of the Chawmanu
R.D. Block. For this purpose a reconnaissance survey was
conducted in the block to identified water sources viz. hand-
dug wells, ring wells and hilly streams to collect sample,
which has been exclusively used as a main water source for
drinking and domestic purposes. Physicochemical
characteristics of water samples are analysed for 14 standard
parameters.
2.1 Study Area
Chawmanu R.D. Block lies between latitude 23o
51'07.91''N
and longitude 91°59'.35.53'' is located in the Dhalai district
of Tripura state, India. The study area comprised of 17
different locations of the Block spreading in 3 Gaon
Panchayat namely, Manik Pur Gaon Pachayat (MPGP),
Makar Cherra Gaon Panchayat (MCGP) and Purba
Chawmanu Gaon Panchayat (PCGP). Study areas are
selected on the basis of population or by intensity of water
use. 10 sampling locations were fixed up for sampling in
MPGP (Table 1), where 5 ring wells, a hand-dug well and 4
streams were considered for sampling. Whereas, 4 sampling
locations in MCGP (2 hand-dug wells, a ring well and a
stream) and 3 sampling locations in PCGP (2 ring wells and
a hand-dug well) was selected. Details of sampling sites
with particular name of sampling location, source of water
etc. are presented in Table 1.
2.2 Sample Collection
Samples are collected in cleaned plastic polyethylene bottles
and brought to the laboratory in an icebox jar to avoid
unusual change in water quality. All the samples were
collected during the extreme hours of water extraction by
the local peoples. Prior to the sampling all the bottles are
washed and rinsed thoroughly with distilled water. Standard
methods [14] were followed for sample collection and
preservation.
2.3 Analysis
Each of the collected water samples are analysed for 14
physicochemical parameters followed by standard
methodologies by [14], which includes 4 physical and 10
chemical parameters viz. pH, turbidity (TU), Electrical
conductivity (EC), total dissolve solids (TDS), dissolve
oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical
oxygen demand (COD), alkalinity (AL),total hardness (TH),
calcium (Ca+2
), magnesium (Mg+2
), iron (Fe), sulphate
(SO4) and chloride (Cl-
).
3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The results of physicochemical parameters obtained from
water samples collected from different sites of studied area
are presented in Table.2. The results of the samples
collected from different sites vary with different values
because of the different nature of soil contamination [15].
Studied ground water sources (ring well and hand-dug well)
are devoid of any covering which allows the surface runoff
into the wells and also direct contamination of various
polluting agents. Results of the physicochemical parameters
obtained from this study are discussed bellow-
3.1 pH
The pH is a measure of free hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ions
which maintain acidic and basic property in the water
system. pH is an important indicator of water which is
altering chemically because it can be affected by chemicals
in the water [16]. The standard value of pH for drinking is
6.5- 8.5 according to BIS. In this study highest value of pH
is measured 9.01 in KK2 (S16), from source hand-dug well
whereas, the lowest value of is measured 6.00 in MP (S2),
from source ring well (Table. 2). The result of pH for all
water samples however, is agreement with the range given
in BIS except in MP, MPUC2 and KK2.
3.2 Turbidity (TU)
TU is the optical property of water by which light is
scattered due to colloidal and extremely fine dispersion [16].
TU in drinking-water may be due to the presence of
inorganic particulate matter in some groundwater or
sloughing of bio film within the distribution system [17]. TU
of the studied samples is measured by the Hanna Turbidity
meter and is recorded between minimum 10 NTU in
MPUC2 (S5) to maximum 86 NTU in AMKP1 (S11).
Obtained turbidity is very high in all the studied ground
water and found above the limits prescribed by BIS (10500-
91) which is 5 NTU.
3.3 Electrical conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolve
Solids (TDS)
EC is the measure of the ability of an aqueous solution to
convey an electric current which is used an indicator of total
concentration of ion in water solution [18]. There is a high
degree of correlation between EC and TDS as both signify
the amount of dissolved solid [19]. The highest value of EC
(265 mho/cm) is obtained at HPKP (S13) from hand-dug
well whereas the lowest value (89 mho/cm) is obtained at
RDC1 (S8) from stream. Total dissolved solids is the
measure of constitute concentration which indicate the
salinity behaviour of groundwater. Water containing more
than 500 mg/L of TDS is not considered desirable for
drinking water supplies, but in unavoidable cases 1500 mg/L
is also allowed [20]. TDS of the studied samples are found
to be in the range (70 to 170 mg/lit).
3.4 Dissolve Oxygen (DO)
DO is measure of dissolve oxygen it the water which play an
important role in water quality monitoring. DO is important
because it is absolutely essential for the survival of aquatic
organisms and also affects a vast number of other
parameters. Not only the physicochemical parameters but
aesthetic ones like the odour, clarity and taste.
Consequently, oxygen is perhaps the most important and
established indicator of water quality. Contamination of

sewage water and organic waste consumes oxygen and is
often concentrated in summer. Precise monitoring of DO is
essential for documenting changes to the environment
caused by natural phenomena as well as human activities.
Many chemical and biological reactions in ground water and
surface water depend directly or indirectly on the amount of
oxygen present.
In this study DO is measured between 1.02 mg/lit to 6.05
mg/lit. Water samples from groundwater sources are found
relatively low in concentration except few locations (HPKP,
KK2 and KK3. Surface water sources are found to be high
concentration of DO except two location (RDC1 and
KMRP) where DO is found 2.24 mg/lit and 1.66 mg/lit
respectively.
3.5 Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
BOD measures the quantity of oxygen consumption by
microorganisms during decomposition of organic matter
[21]. Though it is not a precise quantitative test, it is widely
used as an indicator of organic quality of water [22]. The
high BOD may indicate fecal and organic waste
contamination from human and animal sources and restricts
the use of water for drinking and domestic use. An increase
BOD asserts a potential health threat to the people those
who are using the water with high BOD for drinking. Thus it
is important to monitor BOD to identify areas posing a
threat to health, to identify sources of contamination and
ensure adequate action for remedial measures.
In this study BOD is found high in almost the entire studied
sample which is measured between 0.28 to 14.25 mg/l. .
BOD level of water samples collected from HPKP, KK3 are
only found within standard level otherwise all are ahead of
margins.
3.6 Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
COD determines indirect measure of the amount of organic
compounds present in water. This is a very good indicator of
water quality and a check commonly used by Municipalities
and governing bodies to assess water quality. High COD
may be a consequence of sewage contamination. Dissolve
oxygen is consumed in the oxidation-reduction reactions of
introduced compounds such as nitrate (NO3
1ˉ
), ammonium
(NH4
1+
), sulphate(SO4
2ˉ
), sulphite(SO3
1ˉ
), ferrous(Fe2+
) and
ferric(Fe3+
) ions. In this study we observed only sulphate
and ferrous ion concentration as because high iron
concentration in ground water is reported here in Tripura
[13].
COD value is found high in all of the studied samples which
are measured between minimum 12 mg/l in KK3 and
maximum 41 mg/l in KMRP.
3.7 Alkalinity (AL)
Alkalinity of the water has the capacity to neutralize the
strong acids due to presence of carbonate, bicarbonate
compounds of calcium, magnesium etc. [20]. It is expressed
in terms of parts per million or mg/litre. Total alkalinity
values for the investigated samples were found to be within
the BIS limits of 250 mg/l except KMP (264.37 mg/lit).
3.8 Total Hardness (TH)
Hardness is the property of water which prevents the lather
formation with soap by formation of complex with calcium,
magnesium present on water [20]. So hardness depends
upon calcium or magnesium or both. The water quality
analysis shows that all water samples were within
permissible limit for total hardness where maximum is
found at MPUC1 (169.32 mg/lit) and minimum at MPUC2
(39.61 mg/lit).
3.9 Calcium (Ca+2
) and Magnesium (Mg+2
)
Multivalent cations, particularly calcium and magnesium are
often present at a considerable concentration in natural
waters as a carbonates and bicarbonates and are directly
related to hardness [23]. Insufficient amount of calcium may
induce adverse physiological effects as well as excess
amount of calcium in body results in formation of urinary
bladder stone and irritation in urinary passage. The Calcium
concentration in water of the study area ranged between 3.97
to 51.59 mg/l. which was found within the BIS limit of 75
mg/lit.On the other hand Magnesium acts as an activator of
many enzyme systems. Magnesium is an important
component of basic igneous, volcanic and metamorphic and
sedimentary rocks. The high concentration of magnesium
ion may cause laxative effect, while deficiency may cause
structural and functional changes. The concentration of
magnesium ion measured between 1.21 to 21.65 mg/l. and
was found within the limit prescribed by BIS. [24]
3.10 Iron (Fe2+
)
The main sources of iron in natural water are as a
mineral from sediment and rocks or from mining, industrial
waste and oxidize metal. It is present in ground water at very
low concentration as ferrous bicarbonate, Ferric hydroxide,
organic complex iron or corrosion product such as Fe3O4.
But in Tripura condition iron concentration is reports as high
as 28.55 mg/l [13]. Iron is essential metal to all organisms
and present in haemoglobin system. The high concentration
causes a harsh taste to water and a brownish colour to sluice
clothing. The shortage of iron causes a disease called
anaemia and continues consumption of drinking water with
high concentration of iron for a long time can lead to liver
disease called as haermosiderosis [25-26]. The entire sample
analyzed has the iron content within the tolerance limits
except sample no. S3, S6, S7, S10, S11, S15 which were
higher than the standard given by BIS (Table. 2) which is
0.3 mg/lit.
3.11 Sulphate (SO42ˉ
)
Sulphates originate from several sources including natural as
well as industrial effluents; however, naturally occur in
groundwater are from leaching of natural mineral sources.
Higher concentration sulphates are likely to react with

human organs and may cause gastrointestinal irritation
mainly when drinking water resources also contains Mg and
Na. People consuming drinking water containing sulphate
concentration more than 600 mg/l are also experiences
Carthartic effects [1,23]. The sulphate concentration of the
studied area varied between 6.53 mg/L and 13.07 mg/L. and
found within the prescribed limit of 200 mg/lit given by BIS
[24].
3.12 Chloride (Cl-
)
The concentration of chloride is the indicator of sewage
pollution and also imparts laxative effect. Atmospheric
sources or sea water contamination is reason for bulk of the
chloride concentration in groundwater which may exceed
due to base- exchange phenomena, high temperature,
domestic effluents, septic tanks and low rainfall [20].
Porosity soil and permeability also plays a key role in
building up the chlorides concentration [27]. The chloride
content of studied water samples were within permissible
limit of 250 mg/lit prescribed by BIS [24].
4. CONCLUSIONS
The study investigated physicochemical properties of the
ground water (open ring well and hand-dug well) as well as
the surface water (stream) as a main drinking water source.
From the analytical result (Table-2), it was found that the
water quality of studied water samples is not suitable for
drinking purpose. All the samples were found highly turbid
and the observed values are beyond standard value
prescribed by BIS. High turbidity of water samples
suggested that water sources are contaminated by inorganic
particulate materials. High BOD of almost all studied
samples indicates fecal contamination in the water which is
very unsafe for health point of view which may lead fatal
breakout of water born diseases. Along with high BOD,
COD also found very high in all of the studied locations.
High COD is found might be due to high concentration of
iron present in the soil of the state. Amount of Iron in seven
locations at chawmanu is found higher than the standard
value. All the studied ground water was found open during
sample collection.All the ground water sources which are
visited for this study purpose were found open. As all the
sources have the direct access, rate of contamination gets
high during monsoon period as well as due to human
activities. Surrounding surface runoff directly discharged
into the dug wells which cause degradation of the ground
water quality.
So, from this study it may be concluded the water sources of
chawmanu R.D block are not at al safe for drinking and
domestic function .Particularly in the state like Tripura were
the health care facilities are not so good, drinking of
contaminated water could cause serious health problem. To
resolve such problems government should assign local
authorities for proper remedial action to restore proper water
quality as early as possible to provide safe drinking water to
the rural residents of Tripura state.
