Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems capable of performing complex tasks that historically only a human could do, such as reasoning, making decisions, or solving problems.
Today, the term “AI” describes a wide range of technologies that power many of the services and goods we use every day – from apps that recommend tv shows to chatbots that provide customer support in real time. But do all of these really constitute artificial intelligence as most of us envision it? And if not, then why do we use the term so often?
In this article, you’ll learn more about artificial intelligence, what it actually does, and different types of it. In the end, you’ll also learn about some of its benefits and dangers and explore flexible courses that can help you expand your knowledge of AI even further.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

3. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the
intelligence of machines and the
branch of computer science that
aims to create it. AI textbooks
define the field as "the study
and design of intelligent agents"
where an intelligent agent is a
system that perceives its
environment and takes actions
that maximize its chances of
success.

•NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING
•SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE
•MOTION AND MANIPULATION
5. APPROACHES
•CYBERNETICS AND BRAIN SIMULATION
•SYMBOLIC
When access to digital computers became
possible in the middle 1950s, AI research
began to explore the possibility that human
intelligence could be reduced to symbol
manipulation.
6. TOOLS
•SEARCH AND OPTIMIZATION
Many problems in AI can be solved in theory
by intelligently searching through many
possible solutions. Planning algorithms
search through trees of goals and subgoals,
attempting to find a path to a target goal, a
process called means-ends analysis.
7. LOGIC
Logic is used for knowledge representation and
problem solving, but it can be applied to other
problems as well. AI researchers have devised a
number of powerful tools to solve these problems
using methods from probability theory and
economics.
8. •CONTROL THEORY
Control theory, the grandchild of cybernetics, has
many important applications, especially in robotics.
•LANGUAGES
AI researchers have developed several specialized
languages for AI research, including Lisp and Prolog.
