pallet
Shipping pallets pictured. Another, older meaning for "pallet" is a simple,
straw-filled mattress.
palette
A traditional piece of artist's equipment, a piece of shaped wood with a thumb-hole
cradled against the body and holding the pigments an artist requires for the day's
work, with an open area for mixing.
palate
Part of the anatomy of the human mouth, it is also used metaphorically to
indicate "taste." Example: The wine connoisseur had a refined palate.

In this image, palette, pose/gesture, and costume are carefully controlled.
Each visual element ( or signifier) is selected to contribute to an overall
meaning (set of signifieds). The image works autonomously—on its own—it
does not depend upon the truth or falsehood of what it represents. If
consistent, the message will still communicate its meanings, even if the reality
does not match.
