3. The Power Of Master And Slaves In The Antebellum Period
Throughout the Antebellum Period, masters and slaves had a relationship similar to an owner and a
piece of equipment today. Society viewed slaves as objects and the legal system viewed slaves as
property of their owners. In State v. Mann, a case in which John Mann shot and injured Elizabeth
Jones slave, Lydia. Mann had hired Lydia for a year. Judge Ruffin wrote, The power of the master
must be absolute, render the submission of the slave perfect. This shows that planters believed that
violence and complete power was the key to maintaining slavery, but rather this ideology accelerated
slave resistance and Northern abolitionism, ultimately leading up to emancipation. The extent to
which slave owners oppressed their slaves made it inevitable that slaves would attempt an escape or
openly revolt against their masters, as well as spark abolitionist ideas in the North.
The legal system saw slaves as property, as opposed to human which made it easy for slave owners to
punish their slaves however they pleased. In State v. Mann, the North Carolina Supreme Court ruled
that owners had full ownership over a slave and couldn t be guilty of punishing them in any way. In
Judge Ruffin s quote, The power of the master must be absolute, to render the submission of the slave
perfect, we can see that white planters thought the solution to preserve slavery was by shifting the
power dynamic between slaves and masters completely to the masters side. Although John Mann
injured the slave beyond

5. My Personal Communication Philosophy
My personal communication philosophy includes two factors that will support improved
comprehension among those attempting to connect. The following paper will discuss these two
elements: merging communication styles to aid in understanding and communication intent vs.
perception.
Everybody, either knowingly or unknowingly, utilizes a preferred communication style. My style is
centered on merging my preferred communication techniques with the communication style of those
to which I am relating. We all have preferred methods to send and receive information. If you choose
not to communicate with someone utilizing a method that they appreciate and understand, your
message will not be understood, heard or valued.
I communicate in a very practical, concise way. Give me the facts, make it simple and I will happily
receive your communication. I once worked with an individual who did not appreciate facts or concise
conversations. She preferred large, sweeping hand gestures, flowery stories and lengthy conversation
to communicate a concept. She and I have very different communication styles. I quickly learned that
if I used my concise techniques, she did not understand nor appreciate the conversation. If I wanted to
effectively communicate with her, I had to adopt her style, tempo and verbosity. Once I adopted this
method, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The initiator typically has a clear vision of the intent of the message. The receiver will either decipher
the message as intended, or assign an alternate meaning to the message. It is the equal responsibility of
both parties to understand the intent of message and not rely on the perception of the receiver. Words
don t mean things, people mean things (Griffin, 2012, p.7). Words and the delivery of the message can
often be misconstrued, so we must be accountable for clear message delivery and committed to
understanding the message as intended. First perceptions are not always accurate

6. Frankenstein Commentary
In order to make the found poem as close to the original as possible, I intended to add in very few
words that were not in chapter five, the chapter I chose to use as the source for my poem. I also
intended to include Gothic elements which were included in the first few lines when I wrote: It was a
dreary night, Dismal and wet, The rain poured from a black and comfortless sky. I had worked hard. A
dark stormy night is a Gothic element as it exhibits the metonymy of gloom and horror that was
present throughout the chapter. The inclusion of this Gothic element is insightful because it sets the
stage for a dark gloomy event soon to occur. The poem was intended to side with Victor Frankenstein
and paint a scary picture of the monster. While I was compiling the words for the poem from the
chapter, I noticed that Victor Frankenstein used so many words to negatively describe the creature.
The words used to for the monster were perfect so I decided to side against the monster. I had the
preconception that in order to advocate for Victor, I had to use the harshest words to attack the
monster. I wrote It became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived, the demoniacal
corpse to which I had created. Using harsh words impressed upon the reader a negative view on the
monster. Towards the end of the poem I decided to integrate some drama, suspense, and fear. For
example, I wrote: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

7. The Portrayal Of Women Of Contemporary Rap Videos
The aim of this study is examine the portrayal of women in contemporary rap videos, and to see if it
could be potentially harmful. Unfortunately within the music industry like many industries sex sells,
and the media has brought to light this fixation. Hip hop has persuaded a large portion of society that
this is how women should be treated, but new times call for new measures and it is time that people
realise this and give women the respect and dignity that many believe they surly deserve. In the rap
world, women are a status of success, and they are treated almost as trophies: a way for rappers to
show that they have made it to the top of their game. It is not that rappers feel that women are inferior,
but they feel treating women like a collector s item is how they should go about flaunting their new
found success. Rappers always try to have the best looking girls in their videos, which make other
people, predominantly young men, think how they are living the high life, being able to get the best
looking girls, girls they could only dream of getting. The intent of this faƧade is to simply make
money, but rappers do not realise how much of an impact their music is having on the younger
generations. When the younger generation watch television and see artists throw money in the air,
with expensive cars and women, that image is stored in their minds as the definition of success. They
begin to believe the idea that in order to accomplish success, you must have beautiful

Healthcare Disparity among the Hispanics
Overview of the Population The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (2015) provided an overview of
the Hispanic population, in which they reported the Office of Management and Budget s (OMB)
categorization of the population. Specifically, OMB defines Hispanics as a population which
comprises of Cubans, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, South and Central Americans as well as people from
other Spanish cultures (CDC, 2015). According to a report compiled by the CNN Library (2015),
Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States. In fact, the size of the Hispanic group in
the United States is only second to the size of the Hispanic group in Mexico. The report further
explained that there were approximately 54 million Hispanic people in the United States by 2013. The
number showed a 2.1% increase in the Hispanic population between 2012 and 2013 (CNN Library,
2015). The total Hispanic population in 2013 constituted about 17% of the United States total
population. Gonzalez Barrera and Lopez (2013) inferred that people of Mexican origin constituted the
largest number of Hispanics in the United States. They maintained that there were approximately 33.7
million Hispanics from Mexico in the United States by 2012 (Gonzalez Barrera Lopez, 2013). The
Mexican Hispanics population is represented by people who are born in the United States and
immigrants from Mexico.

9. Introduction To Poetry By Billy Collins
Billy Collins, born and raised in Manhattan, New York, is one of America s most successful poets.
Known for very famous poems such as The Art of Drowning and Introduction to Poetry, Billy Collins
has succeeded in the department of English Literature for much of his life. With a bachelors degree
from the College of Holy Cross and a Masters and PHD from the University of California, Riverside,
Billy Collins went on to become a college English professor at Lehman College in the Bronx. He is
and for a long time has been a strong advocate for encouraging young people to get into poetry and
even created the program Poetry 180 where he made a collection of 180 poems for schools to read one
poem every school day. Setting him apart from the average poet, Collins received the utmost honor
from the Library of Congress when he was declared the U.S. poet Laureate in 2001, serving for two
years. Following the September 11th terror attacks, Collins wrote and read a poem entitled The Names
that was dedicated to the victims. Unlike many poets who write extremely emotional poems, drawing
from their traumatic backgrounds, Collins keeps it simple and rights about relatable, average, middle
class lifestyle topics; both of his poems Introduction to Poetry and Embrace are emblematic of that.
The poem Introduction to Poetry is one of Collins most famous works of literature. The poem begins
with Collins using similes such as I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a

10. The Argument Of Emotions, Perception, And Moral Judgment

Title
INTRO SENTENCE. In this essay, I will begin by explaining Robert Roberts core argument in
Emotions, perception, and moral judgment. Next I wi *** finish this Roberts argues that emotions are
concern based construals, which provide the perceptual basis for evaluative judgments and are
accompanied by affective coloring. Now, I will consider each component of this core focus
individually.
As you go about your daily life, you see situations, hear stories, and consume edible creations. Each
one of these experiences entails the opportunity for individual perception, as your perception need not
align fully with that of your arch nemesis, nor your closest peer. If you share a pizza with a friend, he
or she might be nauseated by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The duck rabbit example portrays that perceptual states are not entirely sensory, because this example
provides a single sensory image, but can result in two distinctly different interpretive outcomes.
Roberts states: The main contrast between construals and other perceptual states is that construals
have their impression content by way of structure, the organization of the parts of something complex
into a whole, whereas sensory perceptual states have their impression content by way of sensory
impressions (Roberts 42).
This example demonstrates key features of construal: structural character and non sensory reliant
character. Through these features, a construal yields three potential epistemic goods: understanding,
acquaintance, and justification (Roberts 46).
We can place the framework of a construal with the notion of emotion. Emotions are formed due to
the structure of a situation and are not reliant strictly what is seen. Emotions are formed based upon
how an individual internalizes the situation, thus permitting variation in interpretation.
Why then, do we not have emotions about every single situation witnessed? If an emotion is a mere
construal, why do I not experience an emotion when I see a cross walk sign change from stop to safe
to cross ? Why do I not experience an emotion when my water is room temperature as opposed to
chilled with ice? Personally, I do not care about either of those things. A cross walk that is not utilized

11. A Comprehensive Analysis Of Davidson s Article,...
In Mark Davidson s article, Displacement, Space and Dwelling: Placing Gentrification Debate , he
cites several contemporary case studies where certain deteriorated areas have been targeted for
redevelopment and subsequent evictions have taken place. Using several philosophical authors, such
as Heidegger and Lefebvre, Davidson s focuses on the effect spatial metaphors have on displacement,
and how these concepts tie into the conceptualization of space. In this paper I will compile a thorough
summary of the article and formulate a comprehensive analysis of Davidson s arguments as well as his
sources. Davidson begins his article with arguably one of the most notable and recent subjects of
gentrification, 1520 Sedgwick, the birthplace of Hip Hop. This dilapidated apartment building s
owners announced they planned to leave New York State s Mitchell Lama programe (pg. 2), which
would result in the current residents evictions. Essentially the program offered tax incentives to
building owners who limit equity to maintain low cost units. However, in lieu of tax incentives many
building owners have elected to leave the program in order to make more profit via higher costing
units, which current residents cannot afford. In the case of 1520 Sedgwick current and former
residents, such as the credited father of Hip Hop Kool Herc, have veiled their mission to prevent the
gentrification process from consuming their building by petitioning for a historic listing as well as
offering to

17. A Comparison Of The Hobbit And The Story Of Sigurd
As the English poet Robert Graves said One gets to the heart of the matter by a series of experiences
in the same pattern, but in different colors. This quote is exemplified in the stories of The Hobbit and
The Story of Sigurd when they have action and use the same hero s journey pattern to create a great
story. Both authors of the stories use strong and resilient characters in their stories to take down the
monsters. In this case, there are two heroes taking down a greedy dragon. Based on the stories and
characters, authors are also able to show their own opinions in the stories. Concluding that, both the
scene with Smaug and Fafnir have similarities in characteristics and outcomes in the story, showing
that authors follow the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This asking of questions shows that the dragons can use that information to manipulate the character
into thinking about something in a different way. However, in both stories, the character doesn t give in
to the persuasiveness, but Bilbo from The Hobbit does give Smaug just the slightest of information of
where he came from and Smaug used it to cause destruction. From finding all the similarities in the
two stories there is enough information to conclude that Tolkien used The Story of Sigurd to gain
ideas to create The Hobbit, however both stories are also very different. Of course in every adventure
story, you need a protagonist, and in The Hobbit and The Story of Sigurd both show great examples of
heroic protagonists. Plus, both of the heroes kill the huge dragon similarly. A main thing that the two
heroes have in common is that they use a special weapon to kill the enemy. In The Hobbit, Bard uses a
rare arrow called a black arrow ; Arrow! said the bowman. Black arrow! I have saved you to the last.
You have never failed me and always I have recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of
old. (Tolkien 251). Sigurd also uses a special sword to kill the dragon Fafnir; Then Sigurd went to his
mother, and asked for the broken pieces of his father s blade, and gave them to Regin. And he
hammered and wrought them into a new sword, so sharp that fire seemed to burn along its edges.

Chapter 7 ...or the Bible In Araby, the beginning of the story starts off with a description of the house
in which the boy lives in which includes the mentioning of an apple tree alone in the middle of the
yard. The apple tree is a direct allusion to the apple tree in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve where
they lived in a garden and could not eat from the apple tree. When the narrator says, I bore my chalice
safely through a throng of foes , the chalice represents a holy cup and him carrying it through a throng
off foes symbolizes him overcoming a challenge. Substitution atonement is when someone sacrifices
themselves so that others do not have to sacrifice themselves or suffer, like how Jesus sacrificed
himself to save all of us from our sins. The narrator sacrifices his time to go to the bazaar for a girl
that he has never even talked to and probably doesn t even like him. Yet, he sacrifices his feelings and
time anyway just for her. When the narrator sees the woman in the bazaar with the two men he realizes
his mistake in going there and feels betrayed by himself that he could let himself think that going there
for the girl would change anything or make her like him. Chapter 8 Hanseldee and Greteldum Fairy

issues. The issue categories are:
Change Request: a formal request to change an approved (Baseline) product or aspect of the project.
Off Specification: a non forecasted discrepancy between a product or aspect of the project from their
planned description
Problem/Question: any other event that impacts the project Although issues can be managed in both a
formal or informal way (depending on their nature, impact, and level of authority delegated to the PM)
there are some instances where a formal procedure must be applied (Change Requests impacting

24. Vulnerable Liability Case Study
The vision of change is the roadmap of the company desires to guide the initiative for the future. The
advice is to allow the vision statement to direct the realization of change. The technique is to direct the
change of various circumstances with perception and objectivity of the organization. Consequently,
the misuse of the vision declaration is to surrender the direction and focus (Palmer, Dunford, Akin,
2009). Therefore, the declaration of the navigator is desperate because different interpretations exist
among various employees.
Vulnerable Capabilities The vision of the six philosophies strengthens the company for the moment,
although issues emerge in the distant future (Palmer, et al., 2009). Meaning, the inessential vision

The inefficient significance disrupts the original vision statement of the organization. In addition,
failure to believe the loyalty of staff confuses the objective of business (Eccles, New Quist, Schatz,
2007). Consequently, the attribute is of the heroic staff to reveal the inefficient authorities for
orchestrating a prosperous business. Therefore, from my personal experience, the authority of
knowledge proposes to uncover his self regard to embody his faithful conduct to influence the people
of the association.
Appearance
The director is the image of authority, which is essential to a productive organization. The image of
the caretaker is the relentless force to capture the vision of the organization. The coach empowers as
the interpreter transforms the vocabulary to elevate the perception of the organization. In addition, the
analytical approach of the nurturer executes the vision to achieve the support of consumers.
Furthermore, the navigator guides the operation through the release of the vision statement. The
morale, provides the essential frame point of analysis to secure the reputation of the organization for
the future.

An integrated approach will allow for this writer to incorporate concepts and techniques from multiple
therapies. This writer s integrated approach consists of Choice Theory as primary while techniques are
used for Adlerian Therapy, Behavior Therapy, and Reality Therapy. The Behavior Therapy technique
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and Adlerian Therapy technique Phase 2: Explore the

primary theory because of personal beliefs that everyone is born with distinct needs that help to
motivate them. The Choice Theory mentions five needs which include: survival, love and belonging,
power, freedom, and fun. An individual display certain behaviors to help them in satisfying their

28. The Tasks And Traditions Of Interpretation Of The Quran
The Qur an is one of the most interpreted religious books in existence. The two articles, The Tasks and
Traditions of Interpretation and Western Scholarship and The Qur an , interpret the Qur an from two
distinct points of view. The first article, The Tasks and Traditions of Interpretation by Jane McAuliffe
introduces a famous commentator named Ali Ibn al Jawzī and explains his analysis on the different
SurÄs within the Qur an. McAuliffe also introduces other famous commentators and compares them to
Ibn al Jawzī s view. In the article Western Scholarship and the Qur an by Andrew Rippin, the author

Asabi al nuzūl is the term for occasions or reasons for the revelations and Succinctly put, it captures
the historical and contextual investigations that various verses and suras of the Quran provoked ().
Some of the verses may have been revealed by Muhammad in response to a question he was asked,
but for many of the verses there is no specific reason for their revelations. In Q109 some grammatical
peculiarities can be observed and are questioned. One profound objection is the objective pronoun
used in the third verse of Q 109, what I worship . Should not, the grammarians asked, the correct
expression be You do not worship whom I worship? After all, God is a who , not a what (). This
question is answered by Al TÅ«si by saying the what in this phrase is referring to an Idol. The next
question regarding the repetition in the verses is answered simply as repetition is used as a rhetorical
device to provide emphasis on a statement. This article provides a strong secular disposition and does
answer many common fundamental questions in understanding the verses of the Qur an. It provides a
better understanding of the setting when these verses were written and why they were written in such a
way. Since Islam is one of the oldest religions, with plenty of interpretations, it faces opposition when
analyzed from a 21st century mind. A weakness I find in this article is that it doesn t provide a basis
for what Islam or the Qur an represent. It just analyzes the

29. The Possiblities of Genetically Engineered Food
Genetically engineering food could be a viable possibility to ending the problem world hunger. There
are many advantages to this solution but there are also disadvantages. This paper will aim to show
both the advantages and disadvantages. I also hope to show the environmental impact that it could
have. What is genetically engineered food? Genetically engineered foods are created when genes from
plant and non plant species are modified and transferred to create a food species that has certain
desired effects such as being drought or pest resistant (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). When food is
genetically engineered in a lab the traits that are desired from the species can be obtained with great
accuracy (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Genes can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another threat to crop growth is herbicides, this is because it is sometimes more conventional for a
farmer to use them for weed control versus hand picking weeds (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Through
genetic engineering, scientists can develop crops that are herbicide resistant allowing farmers to use
herbicides to kill weeds and not damage the crops they are trying to grow (Whitman, Deborah, 2000).
This not only prevents crop loss due to herbicides, but it also reduces the amount of herbicides that are
needed which benefits the environment due to less agricultural waste being generated (Whitman,
Deborah, 2000). This is also beneficial economically because the farmer has less production costs and
these savings can also be passed down to the consumer (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). Genetic
modification of food can also boost the nutritional value of food (Whitman, Deborah, 2000). In many
third world countries there is a rise in malnutrition, by boosting the nutritional value of crops this
could benefit these countries in that the people living there will have access to adequate nutrition
(Whitman, Deborah, 2000). It is also important to note that malnutrition can also be a problem in
developed countries as well, though there may be an abundance of food, the food often may lack
enough nutritional value to support optimum health (Health Worldnet, 2008). One example is rice,

30. Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky Research Paper
Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia in 1882. He was the son of Fyodor
Ignat evich Stravinsky. Igor Stravinsky is known as one of the best composers that Russia has ever
produced because of works such as Firebird, Rite of spring, and Petrushka. Stravinsky Career was
very interesting in that he was trained by one of the best composer of Russia, he was taken to Paris,
and he revolutionized music in his time.
Igor Stravinsky was introduce to music at an early age. His father was a bass singer in the local opera
house (White 3). He loved music since he was a baby. According to white he could frequently hear his
father, two room from his nursery practicing for a role (white). Even though his father made a career

His first performance of Firebird was what put Stravinsky in the musical map. Even though the ballet
went well with the public, Stravinsky knew that he still needed to improve (Huizenga). After the
success of firebird, Diaghilev wanted Stravinsky to immediately start working on another ballet. To
his surprise, Stravinsky had already started working on a piece himself. This piece would be unveiled
in Paris France in 1911 as Petrushka. Petrushka in some ways shows Stravinsky finally reaching the
musical sound he desired. According to Teachout Stravinsky s Petrushka, Herald a Complete change
in the way musicians, and in particular creative musicians, thought about music. It freed rhythm once
and for all from old regularities, the old four bar schemes, and allowed it to react directly to variations
in the melodic phrase (Teachout 59). This is what Stravinsky had been working towards all along.
After his great success with Petrushka, Stravinsky started working in what probable became his best
known work Rite of spring. The concept of Rite of Spring had been in Stravinsky s mind for a long
time. He had this idea of making a ballet about the pagan sacrifices that would occur during the
beginning of spring. To show this barbaric tradition, Stravinsky assembled an orchestra that went
completely outside of the traditional tonality and intensify the essence of dissonance (Vlad 31). Vlad

31. Analysis Of Trouble With Harry Thhaw And Queer Theory
The article of my topic is Trouble With Harry Thaw and Queer Theory : Under Construction. Harry
Thaw is the son of a William Thaw and Mary Sibbet. Harry was born in Pittsburgh. He was born in
February 12th 1871 and died in February 22nd 1947. Thaw had 5 siblings which are Margaret, Alice
Cornelia, Edward, and Josiah. Thaw was discovered to have severe mental illness. This could be
genetics as his mother herself was known for the abuse she did to her servants and uncontrollable
temper. In this article, it is mentioned that he murdered an architect named Stanford White over
jealousy because White was having an affair with his wife which is Evelyn Nesbit. However, I would
say there is a reason of why Nesbit was not faithful to him. Nesbit wrote a book called Autobiography
Prodigal Days and mentioned a lot of negative habits about her husband. For instance, she stated in
her book that her husband is a sadist. This is because Thaw have sex very roughly in a punishing way
and he relates slaves to his wife while they were together. Nesbit mentioned that the sex was more of
an attack than actual love. Besides that, Nesbit says that he has cocaine addiction and thinks that his
masturbating routine might be one of the causes for his insanity. According to Nesbit, Thaw often
wants to feel superior and control around objects that he desires. Other than that, he gets excessively
jealous especially when Nesbit is around men. His excessive jealousy is abnormal as he murdered

32. The Ocean Of The Sky
Most often when a person gazez into the sky, during broad daylight, they see a whole array of
wonders. They see clouds; the faint wisp of the newly formed cloud, gently finding substance within
itself, or maybe the long lived cloud, traveling miles with the wind. They see the sun; either on its
own, glaringly bringing light to an entire half of our planet, or through the trees, peeking through
every single direct pathway to the eye it can find. They see blue; the ocean reflecting with immense
entirety onto the atmosphere. Most see much, much more than that, and I know this because for the
larger half of my life I was a part of this creative, insightful majority. But then the tiny, insignificant
half of my life suddenly began on one random day. On that day, when gazing into the day sky, I could
see nothing. Nothing at all. Not the fantastically shaped clouds. Not the enormous light of the sun. Not
the ocean in the sky. I saw in the abyss above me a suffocating reality of what would soon be me; a
very large and undeniable nothing. When asking the average person how they feel about doctors,
hospitals, nurses, basically any person or thing even remotely associated with the medical field, they
will likely use words closely related to the word nightmare. Most people have this judgment based on
small fears or bad experiences, but I now understand why it is such a hated field. You enter the
hospital and all you see is sickness. Everything is sick, horrifyingly sick. The doors

The biggest trial and misfortune for Ernst Von Bergmann came with the death of Crown Prince and
Kaiser, Frederick. Crwon Prince and Kaiser suffered from hoarseness which means having a vocal
tone characterized by weakness of intensity and excessive breathiness, the hoarse voice of the
auctioneer . It began when The Crown Prince was diagnosed by another Doctor, named Gerhardt.
Gerhardt saw that the Prince had an irregular projection of the left vocal cord and diagnosed him with
Polypoid (nonmalignant growth or tumor protruding from the mucous lining of an organ such as the
nose, bladder, or intestine, often causing obstruction) which continued to grow. A few months later, on
May of 1887, The Prince was diagnosed with Epithelioma (benign or malignant tumor derived from
epithelial cells. Bergmann came to see the Prince and recommend laryngofissure and also removal of
the affected cord, and possibly part of the thyroid cartilage if it was affected. Since a well known
Doctor name Hahn in Berlin had successfully operated for the same disease.
A couple of days later, another Doctor confirmed the diagnosys of Bergmann, a Doctor name Tobold.
They brought it to the Crown Prince and the Prince also agreed with to have the surgery performed.
The complete laryngectomy had been specifically excluded but on request of Queen Victoria Doctor
Morrell Mackenzie was called

34. Psychoactive Drugs Can Have On An Individual s Brain
To fully understand the affects that psychoactive drugs can have on an individual s brain, one has to
first define the term, dissect the history and use, know what factors cause addiction, and what leads to
drug dependency. What is a psychoactive drug? A psychoactive drug, psycho pharmaceutical, or
psychotropic is a chemical substance that changes brain function and results in alterations in
perception, mood, or consciousness (drug, n.d). Typically the term drug alone can be seen or
associated with a positive or negative view. For example, when an individual is under the weather
suffering from cold like symptoms, they may take cough syrup to aid them into recovery sooner.
Whereas an individual who is perfectly healthy may take this same ... Show more content on

Opioids have long been valued for their effect on the gastrointestinal system due their ability to
quieting coughing (codeine) and counteracting diarrhea. One of the most popular forms of opium used
today medically is morphine. Although opioids are the most effective medication in aiding chronic
pain and many other issues, it has been given a bad rap as a very addictive substance when not
monitored correctly or taken in moderation.
What causes addiction? .No one single factor can determine why psychoactive drugs have a tendency
to become addictive. On the contrary the more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance that
taking drugs will lead to abuse and addiction. Learned behavior such as classical learning is one factor
that can lead to addiction and later abuse. Through classical conditioning one can pair the pleasure of
addictive substances or activities with environmental cues. For example, suppose someone smokes a
cigarette in their car after work. The enjoyment of smoking a cigarette forms a paired association with
riding in the car, as well as the time frame after work . By repeatedly pairing cigarettes with car, and
cigarettes after work, both the car and after work will become cues to smoke cigarettes. Then these
cues (getting into the car, getting off work) may create powerful cravings for nicotine.
