Analysis Of The Novel The Absolutely True Diary Of A...
The novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, fits some of the
most important criteria that makes a good book. The three criteria that makes a good book is a
hook that draws you in, a good conflict, and a relatable topic for the reader. The Absolutely True
Diary of a Part Time Indian has an excellent hook that wants you to read on. The first sentence in
the novelis, I was born with water on the brain (p.1). From here on, this hook makes you want to
find out who this person is and why he or she was born with water on their brain. This was an
interesting hook because it s not normal to be born with water on your brain, which made me
want to read to find out why. The second criteria that makes a good book is a good conflict. In
this novel, there are many conflicts, but the biggest one was when Junior leaves his school on
his Indian Reservation for a school that is in a mostly white town. Junior was telling his friend
Rowdy, that he was transferring schools, Man, I was scared of those Reardan kids, but Rowdy
absolutely hated all of it (p.51). Transferring schools was such a big conflict because he decided
to leave his only friend Rowdy, from his Indian reservation, leaving his friend Rowdy to hate
him. Reardan was mostly an all white school, so Junior felt he was going to be out of place. The
final criteria is being able to relate to the book in some way. There are many topics that the reader
can relate to from this book, but one that

Techniques Used to Create Tension in Iв
Ђ™m the King of the...
Question 1(a)
What technique does Susan Hill use to create tension in I m the King of the Castle. Refer closely to
the two incidents in the novel to illustrate your answer.
Susan Hill implements a couple of writing techniques to create tension in the novel. Tension n this
sense simply means mental strain or excitement in the readers. One of the techniques used is shown
when she uses a third person narration to narrate the story. This narrator is omniscient and implies
that he/ she is not one of the characters in the novel and at the same time know everything that is
running through the characters minds. Hill uses this technique to bring the readers on a journey of
moving freely in time and space to allow them to know

This leaves the readers clueless and anxious to know about his plans because they know that
Hooper has something scarier than the spider in mind to frighten
Kingshaw. The readers are then told that Hooper stroked it and
lifted the thing up carefully because it was very large thinking that it might disintegrate . This
arouses feelings of suspense and excitement to know what that thing might be because Hooper
was a little afraid of it himself and he did not dare to hold it near to his body. The readers were
only allowed to know what that thing was when Kingshaw turns on his bedroom light and sees the
stuffed crow.
Due to the lack of knowledge and understanding about Hooper, readers tend to share Kingshaw s
confusion and fears about the mysterious
Hooper.
Another technique used by Susan Hill is that of triggering the five senses in the readers. A very
good example was when Kingshaw runs away to the tin shed in despair, Hooper jumps at the
chance to lock him in the shed and lead him on to hallucinating about his surroundings causing the
atmosphere to be intensely frightening. The shed was
airless and very dark and it smelled faintly of pig muck, and old, dried hen pellets . With no
window, no light at all , the readers have an increased awareness of Kingshaw s predicament and
when he
stuffed his fist into his mouth, in terror , the readers begin to place themselves in his

Enslavement Of African Americans And Slavery
Enslavement of African Americans was a common and legal practice in the United States from the
18th to the 19th century. Slavery of African Americans began in the American colonies when the
British colonies in America bought slaves from Africa. It was a practice that was used as well as
legal in all 13 colonies. It lasted in many states up until the end of the American Civil War. Slavery
lasted longer in some states then it did in others. In the north slavery was abolished earlier then it
was in the south. Reason being is in the south, there was more plantations and farms that needed
tending to. Many young slaves were exposed to harsh conditions, having to pick cotton on farms or
work in the plantations for their owners who treated them poorly.

The Theory And The Psychoanalytic Theory
Although used predominantly to explain the varying characteristics each individual possesses,
personality is also a term often coined to define and explain the reasons behind an individual s
motivations and reactions to certain events, entities and decisions. Defined by Larson Buss, 2005,
personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that are organised
and relatively enduring, and that influence his or her interaction with, and adaptions to, the
intrapsychic, physical and social environments. As personality encompasses such a wide array of
concepts, there are many competitive theories battling to explain these dynamic ideas. Of these
theories, is the unorthodox Psychoanalytic theory, developed by... Show more content on

In contrast, the humanistic approach emphasised the conscious awareness of needs, choices and
personal responsibilities of the individual (Lahey, 2009). They believed that the personal worth of
the particular individual, the centrality of human values, and the creative and active nature of
human beings was what defined the person (McLeod, 2007). Basically, the humanistic approach,
according to Abraham Maslow, was that humans are born good and that human nature is
compassionate and positive (Larsen Buss, 2012).
Both the psychoanalytic and humanistic theories differ from one another in multiple ways. One of
the most prominent differences is their view on human nature. As mentioned above, Freud and his
psychoanalytic concept, viewed humans as inherently bad. The id, he defined, operated solely on
the pleasure principle, craving immediate gratification without consideration about moral values
and the harm it could cause (McLeod, 2008). He also believed that the ego and the superego was
the minds way of controlling the id ((Lahey, 2009; Larsen Buss, 2012; McLeod, 2008).
In contrast, humanistic psychologists viewed human nature as fundamentally good. Maslow had a
positive view on men, believing that each had the ability to grow and mature into proper beings,
and make use of their full potential (Boeree, 2000 Larsen Buss, 2012). The main emphasis of the
humanistic approach, was that an individual has free will and this plays an important role in shaping

Pedro Almodovar s Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) and Live...
Pedro Almodovar, in his recent films Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) (2002) and
Live Flesh (Carne TrГ©mula) (1997), has brought a thoroughly modern interpretation to the genre
of melodrama. These fresh illustrations of human love, loneliness, frustration and individuality
explore the complexity of human interaction and interestingly, in Talkto Her, the interactions of the
sentient in relation to the insentient. Nothing is simple, Alicia s ballet teacher muses in Talk to Her,
this statement accurately captures the essential Pedro
Almodovar style.
Both of the works selected for analysis in this essay are melodramas. The word
melodrama originated from the Greek root which directly translated means
music drama . These films do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No coldness, no bluish tones I told Javier (the director of photography for Talk to Her). It s like
their [the characters ] home. I didn t want the spectator to be faced with an atmosphere of pain or
illness. What I wanted to show was the everyday life of some people who live there.
The use of colour is also instrumental in Pedro Almodovar s pop art style. The incorporation of
classical Catholic themed oil paintings in Elena s bedroom and also the images Lydia s sister is
arranging in the hotel before the bull fight are examples of the pop art movement. Almodovar
was a significant influence on the emerging culture of Spanish youth since the 1980 s.
Almodovar s exploration of issues such as the drug culture in a non traditional manner is
evident in both movies. The narrative does not directly comment on Elena s addiction to
freebase cocaine and gratuitously Sancho asks David if he has any cocaine because coke dries
your tears . The film s ideology seems to condone David s cannabis smoking as a healthier
alternative to Sancho s drug of choice, namely, alcohol. Marco can be seen to be smoking a joint
while he looks on at Benigno,
Alicia and Alicia s ballet teacher on their balcony, in Talk to Her too.
This is significant in that it is an example of the liberalisation of Spanish culture since the death of
Franco and the emergence of Spain from that dictatorial, repressive regime. The exploration of the

My Graduate Career At Florida State University
On September 24, 2014, I attended the first multicultural event of my graduate career at Florida
State University. The Japanese Tea Ceremony was held in the Center for Global Engagement
Auditorium from 5 7pm on a Wednesday. Upon entering the auditorium, I was handed a program
detailing the ceremony format (Usu cha Tana temae). The program had three different types of
languages displayed: English, Hiragana/ Katakana and Kanji. Having no prior knowledge of what a
teaceremony entails, I was excited to be a part of the experience. Prior to the formal ceremony
beginning, the auditorium was alive with quiet chattering amongst the 50 patrons in attendance.
The entire theater went quiet upon the dimming of the lights. The hostess, Mikiko Tanaka,
entered the stage with a silent gentleness I have never seen before. Her stature was proper and
she was dressed in authentic Japanese attire. Her formal guest, Genzo Tanaka was seated at a table
on the left of the stage. For the next 30 minutes I watched, in complete silence save for a few short
dialogue responses in Japanese between the hostess and guest, amazed at the grace and preciseness
of the ritual. That silence, grace and preciseness was the first step outside of my cultural comfort
zone during this experience. In American culture, rarely is anything quiet, delicate and precise.
Observing Mikiko s defined movements whilst folding her napkin, wiping the edges of the bowl,
stirring the tea and turning it the three required

At one time JCPenney was considered the pentacle of discount shopping and was consistently
growing. A heavy recession in 1974 was the first major obstacle for JCPenney and from there on
forward it seemed difficult for the retailer to make progress in the magnitude it had the previous
years; however the retailer continued to make profits. In 1998 JCPenney introduced its online
catalog service; in the beginnings JCPenney s catalog was strictly paper and a major player in
its business strategy and profits. The introduction of the online shopping proved extremely
beneficial for the company due to the online boom of the late 90 s and early 2000 s. Today
JCPenney finds itself at a very interesting cross roads. In the summer of 2011 JCPenney
welcomed new CEO Ron Johnson, a former Apple executive. This was a major move for
JCPenney considering the recent years showed a steady decline in profits and Market share. Store
closings were becoming a regular thing and the Executive committee saw Ron Johnson, who has
had major success in retail, as a chance to turn the company around. On February 1, 2012 the
company launched its new strategy centered on Fair and Square Pricing. This is the first stage of
many changes to come according to Ron Johnson. The company also has a

Disruptive Technologies: How the Email Disrupted Snail Mail and the Way in Which We
Communicate
Introduction Although emails can feel less formal and at times include the use of poorly used
grammar resulting in the message not exactly as clear as we would like it, the email
revolutionized the way in which we communicate. In the following essay we will touch on how
and why the email is creating a new culture within the way we communicate with people. A few of
the key points we will touch on are how the speed of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As time and society evolved, religious orders and universities developed a mail system to
exchange current events, information, and any other significant news that was taking place. As
the postal service and society continued to progress, private individuals were able to utilize this
relay of messengers delivering mail. By the 18th century international postal service was
commonly exchanged between countries that agreed to participate in international postal service.
During the year 1840 the international postal service was growing so complex that reform was
needed to simplify it. Sir Rowland Hill was credited with introducing the system where postage
for mail was prepaid in the form of a postage stamps to fund this ever increasing delivery system.
(Universal Postal Union) The definition of email, or electronic mail, is a system for sending
messages from one individual to another via telecommunication links between computers or
terminals using dedicated software. (Dictionary.com) Among the people I commonly communicate
with, having an email is just as common if not more common as having an actual physical mailing
address. For example, a student attending Temple University can use a different postal address for
each year of their academic studies due to moving to different locations, but throughout each
semester the student is usually using the same exact email address. According to an article by
Mashable, email can be traced back to 1971, if you

Dr. Bruce Tuckman s Model Of Group Work
Our group was brought together for a purpose of making a presentation. We were strangers to each
other but expected commitment in terms of attendance, communication, meetings and quality of
work. It can be argued that individuals can be demotivated by group project if they feel their
success depends on others who do not share this views and which might lead to discrimination and
oppression (CMU, 2015). However this might be resolved by a professional organisation of
working process, high motivation and personal responsibility of each groupmember indicating a
successful group development. This project was a valuable experience for developing our
teamwork skills and in this essay, I will discuss our group process and theories which can apply...

By projecting the JOHARI window (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) on our group at the first
stage when we met it can be said that the Arena window representing facts about the members,
their feelings, desires, and emotions was very small. We had personal awareness towards each
other and probably unconsciously we behaved in a discriminatory way towards assessing each
other as we did not know professional qualities and how far we can trust each other in
completing a reliable presentation. As suggested by some research that group members can
project their experience of oppression and feeling of mistrust from their previous life experience
(Lindsay and Orton, 2009). This probably was the case with our group at the beginning of our
project as we all wanted to achieve good outcomes but had some mistrust in group work as a
result of stereotyping the low level of the communal responsibility. With time the Arena windows
(West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) of our group members expanded as we explored each other s
ability to concentrate on the task, meet a deadline and by giving each other feedback which was
appreciated and increased our trust in each other. The group members admitted that the turning
point was a self disclosing process as described by Whitaker s group focal conflict theory. There
were only four group members out of five present at this time and through

Small Ensembles Concert Report
On April 26th, I attended the College of Liberal Arts Department of Performance Studies
presenting there Small Ensembles Concert. The performance began at 7:30 at Our Saviour s
Lutheran Church and the ensemble was coached by David Wilborn. The ensemble included a
variety of brass including; a horn trio, a brass trio, a trombone and tape, and a trombone choir.
The performers were talented, but I did not care for the pieces that were chosen for the concert.
The first piece is called Trio in E Flat Major Op. 40 originally by Johannes Brahms and it is
performed by the horn trio. The three instruments played are violin played by Hector Vera, horn
played by Megan Simmons, and paint played by David Wilborn the conductor. This piece begins

The ten person trombone choir stays on the stage to perform this piece, and the inspiration
behind this piece is for his mother. The seventh and final piece is called Now The Powers of
Heaven by Alexander Sheremetiev. This piece is performed once again by the ten person
trombone choir. There is another piece on the program titled San Gabriel by David Wilborn the
conductor but it is never played, making Now The Powers of Heaven under the pressure of a
finale piece. This concert overall was interesting and entertaining. The way that the ensemble is
split into trios and groups and the short and plentiful songs provide a refreshing change
continuously giving the audience a chance to hear different play styles. The only critique I have
of the pieces is that at times they had a disorganized sound that I did not recognize as pleasant to
listen to. The emotion I was able to leave with was a lightened mood, but I did not have any deep
emotional connection to the music. My favorite piece of the night was The Obstinate because of
the amazing french horn solo that is played halfway through and leads into the conclusion of the
song. The style of this concert was new to me and I enjoyed becoming a part of a musical era and
style that is not something that I would typically indulge in. The art behind these pieces was shown
through the passion of the performers

Biblical Explanations Regarding A Global Flood
The biblical passages regarding the flood make it clear that it was global. Genesis 7:11 states
that all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.
Genesis 1:6 7 and 2:6 tell us that the pre flood environment was much different from that which
we experience today. Based on these and other biblical descriptions, it is reasonably speculated
that at one time the earth was covered by some kind of water canopy. This canopy could have
been a vapor canopy, or it might have consisted of rings, somewhat like Saturn s ice rings. This,
in combination with a layer of water underground, released upon the land (Genesis 2:6) would
have resulted in a global flood. The clearest verses that show the extent of the flood are Genesis
7:19 23. Regarding the waters, They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the
entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than
twenty feet. Every living thing that moved on the earth perished birds, livestock, wild animals, all
the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the
breath of life in its nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and

The Gilded Six Bits
When many aspects of a woman life are controlled for her and she can no longer make decisions
for herself, she becomes a slave to her oppressor. Throughout the class, the theme of women being
controlled by other oppressing forces, can be seen in many texts. Women have their decisions made
for them in terms of their, foodintake, appearances, and lifestyle choices. These ideas are seen in
Beyond the Lights, where Noni s mother Macy both what Noni eats as well as how she looks.
Again in The Gilded Six Bits, Missie May s hunger and food intake are controlled and judged by
Joe, who believes because he is a working man, his hunger is more important. In Color Stories:
Black Women and Colorism in the 21st Century, society controls women s appearances by
pressuring them to look a certain way to be considered beautiful. In both Not That Kind of Girl
and Borderlands: La Frontera, women s decisions about their bodies in a sexual manner are
controlled by the pressures of men. Oppressing forces play such a strong role in so many of the
texts covered in class this semester, it makes one wonder if this oppression and forceful control is
an accurate representation of our society today. A womans figure and weight can be a major cause
of stress. Society already places such strong pressure on women to have a certain body type that
women do not needadditional pressures about watching what they eat. The idea of women s food
intake being controlled by other people is a prominent theme in

Finance and Funding in United States Refugee Resettlement: A System Evaluation
The United States resettles thousands of refugees every year from all over the globe. Once a refugee
goes through an application process and is approved to be resettled in the United States, the
official process of resettlement can begin. How does the United States fund refugee resettlement?
Are the allocated funds being used in an effective way that allow for long term success of
individuals who have been resettled? These or common questions and concerns regarding US
refugee resettlement. This evaluation seeks to expose the reality of the financial and funding
process involved in the resettlement of refugees in the United States and explore ways in which it
could potentially be improved upon.
It is important to note that this study solely focuses on refugees and does not cover other migrant
populations such as asylum seekers. Both refugees and asylees are individuals who are unable or
unwilling to return to their country of origin or nationality because of persecution or a well
founded fear of persecution ( Refugees and Asylees in the United States ). The key difference
between the two populations is location and admission process to the United States. Refugees are
screened and vetted for resettlement outside of the US. Therefore, they arrive with a pre approved

Suspense
Suspense The Signal Man
The author of The Signal Man immediately creates suspense by using anonymous quotes, which
gives a sense of mystery. Dickens begins by avoiding using terms that identify ownership, i.e. When
he heard a voice thus calling to him .
The 2nd person in the story is the signal man, who at this point is acting in a very peculiar manner.
This produces suspicion amongst the reader and thus generates interest or suspense.
Throughout the entire novel, Charles Dickens is using language that is very obviously
uncomfortable, i.e. Angry sunset , or Violent pulsation . The characters are not described as very
ordinary. The signal man is poor and not very knowledgeable whereas the visitor is wealthy,...

The signal man s post is dark, dismal, and isolated. It is dark below, and light above. The exit up the
rock walls is slimy, slippery, and difficult to traverse.
The scene greatly resembles hell.
When the protagonist begins to approach the signal man, the signal man acts as if he was expecting
this visit. This generates anticipation within the reader.
Dickens uses repetition to great effect, causing alertness and confusion amongst the reader, and also
draws attention to particular quotes, Halloa, below there , Don t call out .
The signal man anticipates supernatural activity by use of foreshadowing, telling the visitor that he
believes they have met in the past. At the same time, the signal man is being rather vague, which
creates suspense and encourages the reader to learn more about the story.
Because the narrator is so vague, it causes the reader to use his or her imagination. This connects
with the reader, which in turn makes the reader feel as though he or she is part of the story.
The reader does eventually discover the history, but not till some way into the tale. This delay is
purposely used to keep the reader in suspense. A great notice should be made to the rational
character. In most tales involving the supernatural, there will always be an entity that has rational
explanations for everything. This seems to ruin the atmosphere by spoiling the mystery. However,
in most tales involving

In the United Kingdom, the Upper House the House of Lords is currently an unelected chamber. It

The Parliament Acts mitigated the affront of democracy in the hands of unelected chamber and
lessen the opportunity to frustrate the will of elected chamber which is accountable to the electorate.
To make the house more democratic and representative, Life Peerages Act 1958 was passed to
transform the House of Lords. The original intention behind the legislation was to improve the
party political balance in the House. For the first time, this Act allowed the holders of life
peerages other than those appointed as Law Lords to sit in the House. It also allowed women
awarded life peerages to sit in the House. This appointment of awards allowed the House to fill
with people with more diverse background and expertise.
To further transform the House, the Peerages Act 1963 was passed. It allowed female hereditary
peers and all members of the Scottish peerage to sit in the House. It also enabled hereditary
peerages to be disclaimed for life following the consequence of the Stansgate case of 1960 1961.
The Act allowed the individual to stand for election to the House of Commons and also entitled
them to vote.
Attempts at reforming the House did not stop. It was until 1999, the government introduced the
House of Lords Act 1999, it was the first measure to abolish the voting rights of hereditary peers
including Royals and only 92 hereditary peers were exempted. This change was made by the

A reason America disliked immigrants was because anarchism and socialism was associated with
them, especially those from countries with failing governments. Stereotypes were common even
then. Now, the KKK, which had become very popular in the late 1800 s, found itself with an influx
of new members. They called for 100 percent Americanism, which I am sure appealed to many
Americans at the time and only allowed white Protestants to join (794). It is known that the KKK

Fundamentalism and Modernists were butting heads at the time, especially with the Scopes Trial

guarantee the laws we want being approved, such as a liberal democrat who support same sex

Essay about The Results of Children in Fatherless Homes
Divorce and out of wedlock childbearing are now epidemic in American society. Both forms of
disrupted families are harmful to children and to society. The children of single parents are more
likely to do poorly in school, commit crimes, and become single parents themselves. In addition, the
increase in single parent families contributes to such social problems as poverty, crime, and a
decline in the quality of public education.
Divorce and out of wedlock childbirth are transforming the lives of American children. In the
postwar generation more than 80 percent of children grew up in a family with two biological
parents who were married to each other. By 1980 only 50 percent could expect to spend their entire
childhood in an intact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, they help to explain why family structure is such an explosive issue for Americans. The
debate about it is not simply about the social scientific evidence, although that is surely an
important part of the discussion. It is also a debate over deeply held and often conflicting values.
How do we begin to reconcile our long standing belief in equality and diversity with an impressive
body of evidence that suggests that not all family structures produce equal outcomes for children?
How can we square traditional notions of public support for dependent women and children with a
belief in women s right to pursue autonomy and independence in childbearing and child rearing?
How do we uphold the freedom of adults to pursue individual happiness in their private
relationships and at the same time respond to the needs of children for stability, security, and
permanence in their family lives? What do we do when the interests of adults and children conflict?
These are the difficult issues at stake in the debate over family structure.
Past discussions on families
In the past these issues have turned out to be too difficult and too politically risky for debate. In
the mid 1960s Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then an assistant secretary of labor, was

Understanding Of Mpm And Measuring Improvement Essay
RESEARCH PROPOSAL Study objective: Understanding of MPM and measuring improvement in
store sales . INTRODUCTION Retail enterprise is a kind of commercial enterprise with high level
of competition. The success of retail business depends on how fast can a retailer recognize
consumer behavior and buying pattern. Retail business must focus on the factor affecting consumer
buying pattern and elements that shifts customers buying decision. Store atmospheric attributes
(which include shade, lighting fixtures, income personnel, music and so on) shape the general
context within which shoppers make decisions of store selection and patronage. Many of the
previous research on retail environment suggests that such attributes affect the image of the store.
Retailers comprehend the significance of such attributes and systematically attempt to avail of an
atmosphere, inclusive of suitable colors, music and so on that will attract their target customers.
Further, purchase decision making has emerge as complicated task due to the inseparability of
product and services offered in retail outlets. Retail store floor planning is a complicated task. The
essential objective is to maximize sales with customer satisfaction and minimize overall prices.
Many factors affect the store floor planning, like the arrival pattern of clients, design of the
building, required service level, merchandise mix, adjacency requirements and lot more. Store
layout can have an effect on client s perceptions of a

Exploring Morality in Measure for Measure Essay
Exploring Morality in Measure for Measure
In Measure for Measure, Shakespeare is able to examine the concept of right and wrong through
the characters of Mistress Overdone and Mariana. Throughout the play, by using characters that
most people would find morally reprehensible, Shakespeare is able to give the audience a
different view of these people and, hopefully, show his audience that people aren t always what
they appear to be. Through the character of Mistress Overdone, Shakespeare is able to bring a
jovial side to the oldest job known to man prostitution. Through the character of Mariana,
Shakespeare allows the audience to decide if two wrongs do, in fact, make a right. While the
concepts of right and wrong are given a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, who gives the right to one man, or a group of people, to determine what is right and
wrong for everyone? This question allows Shakespeare to challenge the general notion of
something always being right or wrong. Through this scene with Mistress Overdone, Shakespeare
wants his audience to consider if something can be always right or always wrong. However, what
he does prove is that a person determining morality for everyone else is always wrong. By not
allowing individuals to determine what they want to do for themselves, no society will ever be able
to become right.
In lines 244 253 of act five, scene one, Angelo explains to the Duke why he could not marry
Mariana. Shakespeare, by showing a petty reason like her dowry was lost at sea, is able to have
his audience believe that the actions of Mariana were right. However, even though these actions
seem right, the audience has to wonder if, in fact, they are right. Is it right to lie to someone you
are in love with in order for you to sleep with them? By putting that spin on it, most people would
assume that not on is this wrong, but also immoral as well. By challenging people s general
conceptions about what is right and wrong, Shakespeare is able to have his audience look at the
situation in two different ways, and, in the end, make a decision for themselves.
In Measure for Measure, Shakespeare uses the audience s general conceptions of

Essay on Discourse in A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man
Authoritative Discourse in A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man
In James Joyce s A Portrait of An Artist As A Young Man, the main character, Stephen Dedalus,
struggles between his natural instincts, or what Bakhtin calls the internally persuasive discourse
that [is not] backed up by [an] authority at all , and his learned response, reinforced by the
authoritative discourse of religion. To Stephen s internally persuasive discourse , his natural sex
drive is not wrong . It is only after he succumbs to the authoritative discourse of religion that he
learns that such a natural human drive is bad . Thus, he learns that it is wrong to succumb to sex:
he does not think that it is bad on his own. In this case, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This struggle also causes Stephen to realize the futility of the fight between his internally persuasive
discourse of natural drives and the authoritative discourse of religion. His awareness of being
fallible to his sense of touch causes Stephen to realize that his natural drives take a stronger hold of
him than do the constraining norms of religion.
But it was to the mortification of touch that he brought the most assiduous ingenuity of
inventiveness (163).
It is the most difficult task for Stephen to deny his sense of touch. His sense of touch requires
him to come up with the most [...] inventiveness . This is shown in Stephen s forcing himself to
endure the raw morning wind on his way to the Mass: the cold air scorches him and, thus, by
feeling the raw air, Stephen wishes he did not have to feel at all. He also punishes himself for such
a strong sense of touch when he attempts to sleep without movement in his bed. It is not surprising,
however, that Stephen does these masochistic things to himself: he does it because he has been
taught that any expression of a natural inclination is labeled wrong by the society, or by the
authoritative discourse of religion. By restricting his senses, Stephen does not only lose his identity,
since his reliance on his senses constructs his personality, but he also imprisons himself in a world,
which he needs eventually to escape.

Age Related Positivity Effect On Children
Age Related Positivity Effect What is age related positivity effect? Is it a hearty personality that
fosters this age related positivity effect? Does the wisdom of life, and the many lessons, tears and
triumphs, teach some individuals the skills needed to obtain this positivity effect as they age?
Andrew Reed and Laura Carstensen completed a research paper entitled; The theory behind the
age related positivity effect, published in frontiers in psychology, September 27, 2012 (Reed
Carstensen, 2012). In this study age related positivity effect is defined the trend wherein age

My hypothesis suggests that the largest impact on age related positivity effect is an individual that
encountered more challenges throughout their lives. When individuals work for their successes,
overcome obstacles and learn to cope with adversity, they have an opportunity to learn invaluable
lessons of perseverance. Aware of attentionrestoration theory (ART) that theorizes cognitively,
individuals naturally are stimulated by either negative or positive stimuli (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan,
2008). ART is based on research, examining the separation of attention into two fundamental areas:
involuntary attention, where ones attention is drawn to their natural positive or negative stimuli
(Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008). The secondary occurs when your attention is captured by
something intriguing to your personal sensibilities, some stimuli that challenges your natural
cognitive thought pattern (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008). Therefore, theorizing individuals that
encounter few adversities within the first one third of their lives, lack the opportunity to learn
challenging coping skills, thus, leaving these individuals with a personal deficit when forced to
endure hardships and calamities in the later stages of their lives (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008).
Once again, these factors have the possibility of influencing cognitive

Transmission Replacement Research Paper
The short answer to this is no, almost certainly not. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that a
busted transmission will inevitably be expensive, regardless of how you decide to handle it.
Transmissions are complicated but essential. Repairing or replacing one is always pricey, buying a
new car would be expensive as well but just because your transmissionis damaged doesn t mean
you should discard the entire car. The situation may not be as bad as you think.
On average, replacing a car s transmission can range from $1800 to $3500, which makes it one of
the most expensive things your car could possible require. However, it s still probably cheaper than
an entirely new car. If your price estimate for a transmission replacement falls on the upper end of
that scale, it s either because you drive a high end car, or you need a total rebuild following a
massive mechanical breakdown. If neither of those situations applies to you, the cost to replace
your transmission will likely be on the lower end of the scale, which makes buying a replacement
a more sound financial decision than buying a new car. If you drive a car with a manual transmission
, you may be able to fix the problem by replacing your clutch, which will probably cost you $1000
to $1500. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lactic Acid Energy System
How much should you rest between sets? In my free weight training program for body building I
will show you how long to rest and why.
Believe it or not, the amount of time that you rest between sets has an effect on your training results.
When you are resting less than two minutes between your sets, you are using the lactic acid
energy system. This is a medium duration energy source and is the primary energy source used in
most body building workouts. If you rest longer than 3 minutes between sets, you are using more
of the ATP PC energy system. This is the most powerful energy system for short bursts of exercise
.
There is one more energy system called the Aerobic Energy System. Generally, this energy system
is used for long duration, low ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The body does not switch from the Lactic Acid Energy System to the ATP PC system at exactly 2
minutes rest between sets. For some people it will be sooner and for some it will be later. Either
way, it is not a sudden change, but rather a gradual changing of the guard with the Aerobic Energy
System helping to bridge the gap between the two.
So what is the best way to manipulate these energy systems for maximum muscle growth? The
answer depends partly on your weight lifting plan, but generally speaking, bodybuilders should
spend most of their training time using the Lactic Acid Energy System. A significant amount of
time should be spent doing heavy weight training with 3 or 4 minutes rest to increase your
strength, and the rest of the time (maybe 70 percent of your training) should be done with rest
periods of 90 to 150 seconds rest between sets.
By training like this, you can build your strength levels during the heavy training with longer rest
periods, and then use that new strength to lift more weight for more reps when you train using the
Lactic Acid Energy System. This will maximize the benefits of each energy system and keep your
body from adapting, which will result in amazing muscle

My Middle School Self And Growing Up
Growing up is a journey we all have to travel. We all make our own paths on our adventure of
change. Along the way the path will be beautiful and smooth sailing, bumpy and rough, and
sometimes conflict will appear out of the blue. At times forks in the road will show up and
decisions must be made. Change is inevitable. Throughout a lifetime decisions made will be small
and slight, or huge and major. It does not matter because one decision can change one s path
completely. Even the slightest change can make the difference. The decision could even be a
change of hairstyle. A change in hairstyle could lead to a new fashion sense, to a new genre of
music, to a completely new person. I myself have noticed many differences and similarities between
my middle schoolself and now; and it is only the beginning. One similarity between my middle
school self and my current self is my personality. Throughout middle school I was always upbeat
and very outgoing. I loved talking to new kids and making people feel welcome. Positive
reinforcement was definitely my forte. At any sporting event I was the girl cheering the loudest
and usually losing her voice. In middle school I would express being outgoing by performing
ballet and doing forensics. I also would sing at my church. I am proud to say that I am still like
this today. It is such a pleasure to be able to brighten someone s day, which is why I am so happy
that, in this case, I have not changed since middle school. Besides my

Ewell is a drunkard and an abuser who is despised throughout the community
Struggle for Power in Society
This struggle for power is most pointedly brought out in the case of Tom Robinson and the Ewells.
Because the Ewells are at the bottom of the class structure along with the African Americans, and
are constantly sneered and despised by their higher ranking white peers, Bob Ewell tries to seem
better than his current situation of utter poverty by trying to appear as morally superior to Tom
Robinson, an African American. In accusing Tom Robinson, he sees what he believes is a way for
advancement in society. Not only does he i) clear his daughter of the crime she has committed of
tempting a black man, he also ii) elevates his societal status. In his mind, the town should think him

People still find the need to mint more and more pennies every year, costing taxpayers and the

but more generally also to other university teachers, in the face of what Allan Bloom saw as the
waning of a literary culture. It is argued that, although some of Bloom s suggestions regarding the
successful engagement of students interest against overwhelming odds are didactically valuable, he

The reason behind this assumption is my belief that, even if Rorty were right that philosophy is
just one voice in the conversation of humankind or one language game among others and even if
it does not occupy a hierarchically superior position in relation to other conversation partners, it
is not one that we could blithely give up whenever we felt like it, as his own continued practice
of it demonstrates. To give up philosophizing would require that we first cease to be self
conscious beings not just conscious beings, but beings conscious of being conscious, or reflective
beings, homo sapiens sapiens. And the day we are no longer such beings, we would no longer be
human, and I could well imagine that philosophy would have no place in a world populated by
such unreflective creatures. Jean Francois Lyotard (1991) has hinted and I agree with him that our
humanity is at present being threatened by an inhuman system of global development, but also that
the resources exist within us to resist the dehumanizing effects of such a system, even if, in the
process, we have to draw on something within us which is inhuman in a different sense: the sense
of that which will always escape the various processes of rationalization (or normalization ,
Foucault would say) typical of an

Fencing is , in technical terms , the sport of fighting with rapiers (swords) in order to score points

I and some of my fencingclass entered a tournament called The Golden Gate International which

tournament took place on the indoor basketball court ( which got divided into several sections
for multiple matches ) was massive, almost twice the size of my high school gym. There were rows

the inner Slavs of the Russian people, others glorify their endurance, and others still are
accepting of the new lack of strength in the modern Russian. As Russia reevaluates it s past,
each voice acts as a foothold on which Russia regains it s balance. For bands like Alisa and
Arkona, the Russian pride and identity lies in battles and folktales. Their performances speak to
the earliest Russian character; the tough, brutish, fur covered, god worshiping Slav. Their lyrics
often claim a genetic, or spiritually intrinsic drive in the Russian people, singing phrases like
But there is a sky of the Slavs boiling in our veins , But Russian speech clanks by chain armor
(Alisa), You have been a victim of crazy waters in a death battle with wind. You put your hands
in the sky and wait for Rod s (the Slavic deity of Fate) answer Hey, hey, cheer up! Hoy, hoy, go in
fight again! If you are brave you are stronger. (Arkona). These Slavic remembrances claim a basic
native strength in the people of Russia, and argue against the acceptance of national failure. They
call the people to fight together against the

Sampling and Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion
Sampling and Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion
Introduction: Overall Job Satisfaction (OJS) was the variable selected for this exercise because it
lends itself to measures of central tendency and dispersion. The data are quantitative and continuous
in nature.
Data Selected: The instructions for the exercise suggested a sample of approximately 30
individuals from one of eight variables. There were 288 measures of OJS. Every ninth individual
was selected resulting in thirty two (32) unique scores. The data was sorted by gender (17 males,
15 females) as shown in the following table:

If the results were normally distributed and the satisfied employee scores mirrored the dissatisfied
employee scores, the mean would be 3.5. This is further supported by the fact that the median score
is greater than the mean. This suggests that some extreme scores on the dissatisfied side are
lowering the mean (4.56) when compared with the median (4.6). Males are slightly more satisfied
than females (4.8, 4.2).

Personal Objectives Of A Portfolio
Introduction
As an investor looking toward retirement, my goals is to have a well diversified portfolio. While
$100,000 may be allocated solely to mutual funds in this scenario, in the future, I would hope to
include some property as part of my overall portfolio. The goal is to seek mutual funds which are
stable in nature, considered stable, and may have some risk involved. While risk is an adverse
subject for some, I believe that taking on some or half of a risky portfolio and mixing the riskier
funds with a portion of less risky funds, the portfolio would perform to my liking. From the
beginning, I knew I was going to be selecting sector based funds, as it is easier to develop a
thought process that s based from instinct.
Personal Objectives
As a person that studies economics, I want to invest in funds that support companies that will
potentially boost our economy. Additionally, the strategy I took on was based on trends and
common knowledge. Technology is known to have longer term effects on economic expansion,
parallel, my mutual fund is set for 30 years. Therefore, I felt it important to support and investigate
funds that were heavily weighted with technological company stocks, such as Apple, Google,
Facebook, Qualcomm, etc. Technology is the face of our future because as soon as you buy it
something better always comes out the next day.
For my last focus, I wanted to focus on healthcare. With Obama care rolling out and modern
medicine on an ever

Childhood Is Seen As A Horror Experience
Childhood is often seen as a carefree time where children are able to grow and learn from the world
around them. Many people have fond memories of their time as a child and would do anything
to get it back. However, in Barrie s Peter Pan, childhood is seen as a horror experience. This novel
is read in stark contrast to Walt Disney s popular movie version of Peter Pan. Disney s version
shows three children on the adventure of their life. But, Barrie s Peter Pan is the exemplar of the
childhood horror experience because of the actions of the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling, the
actions of the character Captain James Hook, and the dangers inherent of being a child in this
anarchistic place called Neverland. With a name like Darling one may assume that the holder of
that name would be an inherently good person. However, this is not the case with the characters
of Mr. and Mrs. Darling in Barrie s Peter Pan. The behavior of these two characters toward their
own children allows the true childhood horror experience to be shown. For example, when
Wendy Darling was born, Mr. Darling s first action as a father was to calculate whether or not he
and his wife could afford to keep their infant daughter. With his wife still in bed, Mr. Darling . . .
sat on the edge of Mrs. Darling s bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked
at him imploringly (Barrie 8). This action from Mr. Darling expressed the horrible truth that he
valued any wealth that he and his wife

Taking a Look at Crohn s Disease
Crohn s Diseases is a idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, of the gastro intestinal tract from
the mouth to the anus. Crohns has an effect on people in many different forms and fashion from
physiological to psychological. Depression is a major factor that comes into play with this
(IBD). Patients live on the edge from day to day when dealing with spontaneous episodes of
diarrhea and chronic abdominal pains. Clients may show a lack of interest in the social aspect
of life due to illness, and may demonstrate these traits to avoid embarrassment. Jobs and work life
have to be comprised, for example patients need to have bathroom timeouts as well as always
have emergency bag ready. Nutritional aspects have to comprise due to the illness. There will
need to be a high intake of fruits and vegetables for adequate nutritional intake. Certain fruits and
vegetables like strawberries due to the small seeds and apples because of the skin can be
difficult to digest. Weight loss will occur due to lack of nutrients being absorbed because of
inflamed intestinal wall. Medication compliance at first can be a hassle facing the fact that
most clients have to take between 8 15 pills a day. Patients may also experience physical side
effects, moon face for example from large doses of prednisone. This illness will cause for a
strong support group and possibly the need for finical assistance; due to medical bills. Crohn s

Reflection For A Student, Erosionle Ationure, And Bronle...
The students will write erosion in the center circle. In the upper left circle, the student will write
water . The student will write details about water erosion. The next day, the student will write wind
in the upper right corner. The student will write details about wind erosion. The student will write
glacierin the bottom left corner. The student will write details about glacier erosion. The bottom
right corner will not have anything in it.
Read to OR access to audio materials (books on tape): There is not any reading assigned during
this lesson. This lesson is strictly hands on and collecting data. Therefore, the students will not need
to have access to audio materials. Modifications
How would you modify this lesson for a student on AAA standards who will participate in your
class during this lesson? The student who is on AAA standards will follow the AAA standards
necessary for this lesson. The student will participate in the experiment will the other students. I
would pair the student who requires AAA standards with a group of students who are strong in
science and math. The student will be assigned the least difficult task to participate in with the
group. (Day 1 hold the ruler. Day 2 blow. Day 3 touch the clay.) The student will be assessed by
participation with the group. The student will explain if the group participated in water erosion,
wind erosion, and glacier erosion. I will accept the verbal answer of water for day one, wind for
day two, and glacier or ice for day three. I want the student to participate with the group as much as
every other student does.
Assessment
What is one alternate testing method that you could employ to provide students with high incidence
disabilities a better opportunity to demonstrate their understanding? The students are being assessed
by comparing fractions by creating a bar graph comparing the effects of wind and water erosion. An
alternate testing method can be to ask the student which form of erosion made the mountain look
smaller. Depending on how severe the student s disability is, I would ask the student why the
mountain looked smaller compared to the other one.

How to Teach a Dyslexic Child
Dyslexia is now a widely accepted condition that is prevalent in many classrooms. However,
defining dyslexia is difficult as it can be described as a continuum. Although experts largely agree
that dyslexia is identifiable as a developmental difficulty of language learning and cognition (Rose,
2009). Dyslexiacan pose a host of difficulties for the child and can make daily activities and school
life very challenging. The NCLD (2013) states children with dyslexia may have difficulties with
accurate and fluent spelling, accurate and fluent written expression, phonological awareness,
memory, verbal processing speed and information processing. As teachers it is vital that we are

Therefore, the teacher should ensure the child is focused before giving instructions and the tasks
should be broken down into small easily remembered pieces of information (Hodge, 2000). The
child should be seated where communication can be made easier and information should be
repeated if needed. Visual cues may need to be provided along with the verbal to aid the child in
processing the verbal information. The child with dyslexia can have difficulty with perseverance
to task so providing them with diagrams and flow charts depicting the task structure and posters
reminding the child of steps to follow to complete the task can help. The teacher should ensure
activities are not information overload for the child making the task impossible (DENI, 2011;
Gathercole and Alloway, 2008). Also ensure that tasks are not lengthy sequences but meaningful
chunks (DENI, 2011, p.100). Distractions should be reduced whilst the child is working for if a
child is distracted or interrupted while using working memory the process is lost and the child
cannot resume from where they were interrupted (Gathercole and Alloway, 2008).The plenary
should also be used to summarise main teaching points so that the learning is more likely to go
from short term to long term memory.
Within the Primary School setting the teaching of phonics is a significant part of the curriculum
(PMBNI, 2009).

Comparison Of The Structure Of Coca Cola And Pepsi

These two firms are doing the same business. Soft drinks are generally known as refreshers
because people feel the needs for refreshing drinks in order to quench their thirst. People consume
soft drinks like Coca colaand Pepsi cola not only to quench the thirst but because of the taste and the

The two firms can use several strategies to increase their performance in the oligopoly market

attention to their numbers by offering further reduction on wholesale prices as well as offer more

How Change Is A Essential Part Of Life
Change is a vital part of life, it allows us to grow and mature overtime. Whether you want to
believe it or not, we go through changes. We find different outlooks, styles and sometimes we
may even change our personality, or maturity level. My choices over the course of this semester
have changed me for the better. I started this class oblivious to the norms and traditions of a
college English class. I must admit that for the first few weeks I was shocked at how different
college is from my simple high schoolEnglish course.
I now have a different outlook on life. At the beginning of the semester I wasn t sure whether or
not I wanted to further my education at a four year university, or successfully complete my AA
degree and then enter a police academy. I can now say that I know my path and I can t wait to
walk it, I m glad that this change has happened in my life. Additionally, the next thing that has
changed is my maturity level. I didn t take this class as serious as I should have in the beginning
and my grade reflected that. I changed my attitude toward the course by concentrating more on the
instructions and making sure that I followed them to the best of my ability.
I wrote about the emotion desire in an essay earlier this semester, while I do feel this emotion daily
there is another emotion that stays prevalent in my mind. Pride is something that is a big part of
my personality, it is both a positive and a negative. Everyone needs at least some pride or else they

Chicano Gangs And The Los Angeles
Chicano gangs have been a prominent part of the Los Angeles community since the early 1900s.
These Chicano gangs consisted of young Mexican Americans, another name used for Chicanos,
which were formed as a way for some youth to identify with something. The behavior of gang
members was a way of adapting to the social and economic living situation that was upon them.
There was a large migration of Chicano immigrants to the Los Angelesarea that resulted in several
changes directly related to the larger and present Chicano presence. The most notable being the
prominent presence of Chicano specific gangs. This is likely due to the fact that many people of
Chicano descent are immigrants who came to America with little to nothing. This resulted in large
groups of Chicanos being located in some of the poorest areas. Such areas became known as barrios
, a Spanish term for neighborhood that became specifically in reference to the poor neighborhoods
with a high Latino population. The people living in them were often working the lowest paid and
hardest jobs needed by those of a higher class in society. It is commonly found that when poverty is
heavy throughout a community, many youth will feel the need to act out in some way, and band
together in their mutual discontent with their surrounding environment and society. In addition,
many youth were also dealing with trying to identify themselves as something and weren t sure if to
identify themselves as latino, chicano, or something

The French Revolution And The Revolution Of The Bastille
In 1789, an event would take place that would shake a nation. This event further altered the country
of France s history and drastically changed its future. This event was known as the Storming of the
Bastille, the first violent instance to instigate the French Revolution and the formation of a rebel
alliance to overthrow French monarchy. However the motives of the renegades is far and wide.
The question must be asked; What were the major reasons for the French Revolution? Many
elements of France s infrastructure were created to suppress the qualms of the people. However, the
major influences that caused the French Revolution were the new ideas of the enlightened thinkers,
powerlessness of the Third Estate, and famine crises. Without these factors within French society, a
governmental collapse may not have occurred. Firstly, the French Revolution came directly after
the American Revolution. On the foundations of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as
Thomas Jefferson said on an adaptation of John Locke s famous quote, America was founded with
new values unlike any other country at the time. Many of these values were inspired by enlightened
thinkers and philosophers from Europe, including France. In fact, it can be argued that the
Declaration of Independence was just a mouthpiece of Baron de Montesquieu and John Locke s
concepts. Lord Acton, an English historian claims that the spark that changed thought [of the
French people] into action was supplied by the

Film Analysis Of Two Cars One Night
The films Two cars one night and Boy directed by Taika Waititi are based in New Zealand. Two
cars one night is a short film and the idea for the movie Boy was derived from it. Taika Waititi
uses the film aspects of light and dark lighting and symbolism to portray the themes and his style of
directing through his movie Boy and his short filmtwo cars one night. Waititi uses the lens of a
child to portray what is happening throughout the movie plot to show the lasting moments in
childhood. As a director Taika Waititi expresses his concerns of viewing through the lens of
innocence or a child. He explains that what being creative is about having fun and looking at life

The lighting in this point in the film almost camouflages the car as it is pitch black at nighttime.
It enables the audience to only see the car s window and the faces inside the car. This gives the
audience a feeling of mystery as they re trying to work out who is inside the car. Waititi uses this
aspect as well in his other film, Two Cars One Night. He uses the lightning to control the audience s
emotions around who in what cars. By weaving the dark lightning around.
Set in 1984 The short film, Two cars one night utilizes the filming aspect of lightand dark lighting
to the contrast between the two cars with children in a pub car park. The long shot exhibited in
the scene gives the picture of the two cars in the car parking lot while the adults are inside the
pub. It shows the aspect of safety and danger for the children as they wait for their parents to
come out from inside of the bar and pub. It also signifies the familiar and unknown as the
children explore with their eyes what is around them. Taika uses the aspect of light and dark light
to symbolize danger and create tension within this scene because as an audience we associate
nighttime with being unsafe for children, and he uses the dark light and children in this scene to
create a sense of danger. An example of this is when the car the two Boys are in is captured sitting
still while the surrounding everything is moving, such as the people and the dark night sky. It
portrays the darkness

  • 2. Analysis Of The Novel The Absolutely True Diary Of A... The novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, fits some of the most important criteria that makes a good book. The three criteria that makes a good book is a hook that draws you in, a good conflict, and a relatable topic for the reader. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian has an excellent hook that wants you to read on. The first sentence in the novelis, I was born with water on the brain (p.1). From here on, this hook makes you want to find out who this person is and why he or she was born with water on their brain. This was an interesting hook because it s not normal to be born with water on your brain, which made me want to read to find out why. The second criteria that makes a good book is a good conflict. In this novel, there are many conflicts, but the biggest one was when Junior leaves his school on his Indian Reservation for a school that is in a mostly white town. Junior was telling his friend Rowdy, that he was transferring schools, Man, I was scared of those Reardan kids, but Rowdy absolutely hated all of it (p.51). Transferring schools was such a big conflict because he decided to leave his only friend Rowdy, from his Indian reservation, leaving his friend Rowdy to hate him. Reardan was mostly an all white school, so Junior felt he was going to be out of place. The final criteria is being able to relate to the book in some way. There are many topics that the reader can relate to from this book, but one that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Techniques Used to Create Tension in Iв Ђ™m the King of the... Question 1(a) What technique does Susan Hill use to create tension in I m the King of the Castle. Refer closely to the two incidents in the novel to illustrate your answer. Susan Hill implements a couple of writing techniques to create tension in the novel. Tension n this sense simply means mental strain or excitement in the readers. One of the techniques used is shown when she uses a third person narration to narrate the story. This narrator is omniscient and implies that he/ she is not one of the characters in the novel and at the same time know everything that is running through the characters minds. Hill uses this technique to bring the readers on a journey of moving freely in time and space to allow them to know what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leaves the readers clueless and anxious to know about his plans because they know that Hooper has something scarier than the spider in mind to frighten Kingshaw. The readers are then told that Hooper stroked it and lifted the thing up carefully because it was very large thinking that it might disintegrate . This arouses feelings of suspense and excitement to know what that thing might be because Hooper was a little afraid of it himself and he did not dare to hold it near to his body. The readers were only allowed to know what that thing was when Kingshaw turns on his bedroom light and sees the stuffed crow. Due to the lack of knowledge and understanding about Hooper, readers tend to share Kingshaw s confusion and fears about the mysterious Hooper. Another technique used by Susan Hill is that of triggering the five senses in the readers. A very good example was when Kingshaw runs away to the tin shed in despair, Hooper jumps at the chance to lock him in the shed and lead him on to hallucinating about his surroundings causing the atmosphere to be intensely frightening. The shed was airless and very dark and it smelled faintly of pig muck, and old, dried hen pellets . With no window, no light at all , the readers have an increased awareness of Kingshaw s predicament and when he stuffed his fist into his mouth, in terror , the readers begin to place themselves in his ... • 4. Enslavement Of African Americans And Slavery Enslavement of African Americans was a common and legal practice in the United States from the 18th to the 19th century. Slavery of African Americans began in the American colonies when the British colonies in America bought slaves from Africa. It was a practice that was used as well as legal in all 13 colonies. It lasted in many states up until the end of the American Civil War. Slavery lasted longer in some states then it did in others. In the north slavery was abolished earlier then it was in the south. Reason being is in the south, there was more plantations and farms that needed tending to. Many young slaves were exposed to harsh conditions, having to pick cotton on farms or work in the plantations for their owners who treated them poorly. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Theory And The Psychoanalytic Theory Although used predominantly to explain the varying characteristics each individual possesses, personality is also a term often coined to define and explain the reasons behind an individual s motivations and reactions to certain events, entities and decisions. Defined by Larson Buss, 2005, personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that are organised and relatively enduring, and that influence his or her interaction with, and adaptions to, the intrapsychic, physical and social environments. As personality encompasses such a wide array of concepts, there are many competitive theories battling to explain these dynamic ideas. Of these theories, is the unorthodox Psychoanalytic theory, developed by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, the humanistic approach emphasised the conscious awareness of needs, choices and personal responsibilities of the individual (Lahey, 2009). They believed that the personal worth of the particular individual, the centrality of human values, and the creative and active nature of human beings was what defined the person (McLeod, 2007). Basically, the humanistic approach, according to Abraham Maslow, was that humans are born good and that human nature is compassionate and positive (Larsen Buss, 2012). Both the psychoanalytic and humanistic theories differ from one another in multiple ways. One of the most prominent differences is their view on human nature. As mentioned above, Freud and his psychoanalytic concept, viewed humans as inherently bad. The id, he defined, operated solely on the pleasure principle, craving immediate gratification without consideration about moral values and the harm it could cause (McLeod, 2008). He also believed that the ego and the superego was the minds way of controlling the id ((Lahey, 2009; Larsen Buss, 2012; McLeod, 2008). In contrast, humanistic psychologists viewed human nature as fundamentally good. Maslow had a positive view on men, believing that each had the ability to grow and mature into proper beings, and make use of their full potential (Boeree, 2000 Larsen Buss, 2012). The main emphasis of the humanistic approach, was that an individual has free will and this plays an important role in shaping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Pedro Almodovar s Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) and Live... Pedro Almodovar, in his recent films Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) (2002) and Live Flesh (Carne TrГ©mula) (1997), has brought a thoroughly modern interpretation to the genre of melodrama. These fresh illustrations of human love, loneliness, frustration and individuality explore the complexity of human interaction and interestingly, in Talkto Her, the interactions of the sentient in relation to the insentient. Nothing is simple, Alicia s ballet teacher muses in Talk to Her, this statement accurately captures the essential Pedro Almodovar style. Both of the works selected for analysis in this essay are melodramas. The word melodrama originated from the Greek root which directly translated means music drama . These films do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No coldness, no bluish tones I told Javier (the director of photography for Talk to Her). It s like their [the characters ] home. I didn t want the spectator to be faced with an atmosphere of pain or illness. What I wanted to show was the everyday life of some people who live there. The use of colour is also instrumental in Pedro Almodovar s pop art style. The incorporation of classical Catholic themed oil paintings in Elena s bedroom and also the images Lydia s sister is arranging in the hotel before the bull fight are examples of the pop art movement. Almodovar was a significant influence on the emerging culture of Spanish youth since the 1980 s. Almodovar s exploration of issues such as the drug culture in a non traditional manner is evident in both movies. The narrative does not directly comment on Elena s addiction to freebase cocaine and gratuitously Sancho asks David if he has any cocaine because coke dries your tears . The film s ideology seems to condone David s cannabis smoking as a healthier alternative to Sancho s drug of choice, namely, alcohol. Marco can be seen to be smoking a joint while he looks on at Benigno, Alicia and Alicia s ballet teacher on their balcony, in Talk to Her too. This is significant in that it is an example of the liberalisation of Spanish culture since the death of Franco and the emergence of Spain from that dictatorial, repressive regime. • 7. My Graduate Career At Florida State University On September 24, 2014, I attended the first multicultural event of my graduate career at Florida State University. The Japanese Tea Ceremony was held in the Center for Global Engagement Auditorium from 5 7pm on a Wednesday. Upon entering the auditorium, I was handed a program detailing the ceremony format (Usu cha Tana temae). The program had three different types of languages displayed: English, Hiragana/ Katakana and Kanji. Having no prior knowledge of what a teaceremony entails, I was excited to be a part of the experience. Prior to the formal ceremony beginning, the auditorium was alive with quiet chattering amongst the 50 patrons in attendance. The entire theater went quiet upon the dimming of the lights. The hostess, Mikiko Tanaka, entered the stage with a silent gentleness I have never seen before. Her stature was proper and she was dressed in authentic Japanese attire. Her formal guest, Genzo Tanaka was seated at a table on the left of the stage. For the next 30 minutes I watched, in complete silence save for a few short dialogue responses in Japanese between the hostess and guest, amazed at the grace and preciseness of the ritual. That silence, grace and preciseness was the first step outside of my cultural comfort zone during this experience. In American culture, rarely is anything quiet, delicate and precise. Observing Mikiko s defined movements whilst folding her napkin, wiping the edges of the bowl, stirring the tea and turning it the three required ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A heavy recession in 1974 was the first major obstacle for JCPenney and from there on forward it seemed difficult for the retailer to make progress in the magnitude it had the previous years; however the retailer continued to make profits. In 1998 JCPenney introduced its online catalog service; in the beginnings JCPenney s catalog was strictly paper and a major player in its business strategy and profits. The introduction of the online shopping proved extremely beneficial for the company due to the online boom of the late 90 s and early 2000 s. Today JCPenney finds itself at a very interesting cross roads. In the summer of 2011 JCPenney welcomed new CEO Ron Johnson, a former Apple executive. This was a major move for JCPenney considering the recent years showed a steady decline in profits and Market share. Store closings were becoming a regular thing and the Executive committee saw Ron Johnson, who has had major success in retail, as a chance to turn the company around. On February 1, 2012 the company launched its new strategy centered on Fair and Square Pricing. This is the first stage of many changes to come according to Ron Johnson. The company also has a ... As time and society evolved, religious orders and universities developed a mail system to exchange current events, information, and any other significant news that was taking place. As the postal service and society continued to progress, private individuals were able to utilize this relay of messengers delivering mail. By the 18th century international postal service was commonly exchanged between countries that agreed to participate in international postal service. During the year 1840 the international postal service was growing so complex that reform was needed to simplify it. Sir Rowland Hill was credited with introducing the system where postage for mail was prepaid in the form of a postage stamps to fund this ever increasing delivery system. (Universal Postal Union) The definition of email, or electronic mail, is a system for sending messages from one individual to another via telecommunication links between computers or terminals using dedicated software. (Dictionary.com) Among the people I commonly communicate with, having an email is just as common if not more common as having an actual physical mailing address. For example, a student attending Temple University can use a different postal address for each year of their academic studies due to moving to different locations, but throughout each semester the student is usually using the same exact email address. According to an article by Mashable, email can be traced back to 1971, if you

We were strangers to each other but expected commitment in terms of attendance, communication, meetings and quality of work. It can be argued that individuals can be demotivated by group project if they feel their success depends on others who do not share this views and which might lead to discrimination and oppression (CMU, 2015). By projecting the JOHARI window (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) on our group at the first stage when we met it can be said that the Arena window representing facts about the members, their feelings, desires, and emotions was very small. We had personal awareness towards each other and probably unconsciously we behaved in a discriminatory way towards assessing each other as we did not know professional qualities and how far we can trust each other in completing a reliable presentation. As suggested by some research that group members can project their experience of oppression and feeling of mistrust from their previous life experience (Lindsay and Orton, 2009). This probably was the case with our group at the beginning of our project as we all wanted to achieve good outcomes but had some mistrust in group work as a result of stereotyping the low level of the communal responsibility. With time the Arena windows (West, R. and Turner, L., 2009) of our group members expanded as we explored each other s ability to concentrate on the task, meet a deadline and by giving each other feedback which was appreciated and increased our trust in each other. The way that the ensemble is split into trios and groups and the short and plentiful songs provide a refreshing change continuously giving the audience a chance to hear different play styles. The only critique I have of the pieces is that at times they had a disorganized sound that I did not recognize as pleasant to listen to. The emotion I was able to leave with was a lightened mood, but I did not have any deep emotional connection to the music. My favorite piece of the night was The Obstinate because of the amazing french horn solo that is played halfway through and leads into the conclusion of the song. • 14. Biblical Explanations Regarding A Global Flood The biblical passages regarding the flood make it clear that it was global. Genesis 7:11 states that all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. Genesis 1:6 7 and 2:6 tell us that the pre flood environment was much different from that which we experience today. Based on these and other biblical descriptions, it is reasonably speculated that at one time the earth was covered by some kind of water canopy. This canopy could have been a vapor canopy, or it might have consisted of rings, somewhat like Saturn s ice rings. This, in combination with a layer of water underground, released upon the land (Genesis 2:6) would have resulted in a global flood. The clearest verses that show the extent of the flood are Genesis 7:19 23. Regarding the waters, They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. Throughout the class, the theme of women being controlled by other oppressing forces, can be seen in many texts. Women have their decisions made for them in terms of their, foodintake, appearances, and lifestyle choices. These ideas are seen in Beyond the Lights, where Noni s mother Macy both what Noni eats as well as how she looks. Again in The Gilded Six Bits, Missie May s hunger and food intake are controlled and judged by Joe, who believes because he is a working man, his hunger is more important. In both Not That Kind of Girl and Borderlands: La Frontera, women s decisions about their bodies in a sexual manner are controlled by the pressures of men. Dickens uses repetition to great effect, causing alertness and confusion amongst the reader, and also draws attention to particular quotes, Halloa, below there , Don t call out . The signal man anticipates supernatural activity by use of foreshadowing, telling the visitor that he believes they have met in the past. At the same time, the signal man is being rather vague, which creates suspense and encourages the reader to learn more about the story. Because the narrator is so vague, it causes the reader to use his or her imagination. This connects with the reader, which in turn makes the reader feel as though he or she is part of the story. The reader does eventually discover the history, but not till some way into the tale. This delay is purposely used to keep the reader in suspense. This question allows Shakespeare to challenge the general notion of something always being right or wrong. Through this scene with Mistress Overdone, Shakespeare wants his audience to consider if something can be always right or always wrong. However, what he does prove is that a person determining morality for everyone else is always wrong. By not allowing individuals to determine what they want to do for themselves, no society will ever be able to become right. In lines 244 253 of act five, scene one, Angelo explains to the Duke why he could not marry Mariana. Political Female Serial Killers Famous Historical and Political Female Serial Killers A serial killer is traditionally defined as an individual who commits separate killings of three or more people over a certain period of time, generally with breaks between the murders, at the same time leaving a similar sign on all their victims. Serial killersare not a new phenomenon to our society. They are violent, brutal monsters and have an abnormal urge to kill. One of them was the Queen of England and Ireland Mary I whose executions of Protestants in the 16th century led to creating a worldwide famous metaphor and modern alcohol drink cocktail called Bloody Mary . Mary s motives were completely political as it was usual for those times to rush to throne sweeping everything on their way. Mary is remembered for her restoration of Roman Catholicism after the short lived Protestant reign of her brother. During her five year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the so called Marian Persecutions . Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Teaching and Student Experience ABSTRACT: This paper focuses on novel approaches open to teachers of philosophy in particular, but more generally also to other university teachers, in the face of what Allan Bloom saw as the waning of a literary culture. It is argued that, although some of Bloom s suggestions regarding the successful engagement of students interest against overwhelming odds are didactically valuable, he neglects precisely those avenues from which students could benefit most on the basis of their own experience in a world largely devoid of literary attachments but saturated with audiovisual ones. These options are explored in some detail from various perspectives, including the difference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason behind this assumption is my belief that, even if Rorty were right that philosophy is just one voice in the conversation of humankind or one language game among others and even if it does not occupy a hierarchically superior position in relation to other conversation partners, it is not one that we could blithely give up whenever we felt like it, as his own continued practice of it demonstrates. To give up philosophizing would require that we first cease to be self conscious beings not just conscious beings, but beings conscious of being conscious, or reflective beings, homo sapiens sapiens. And the day we are no longer such beings, we would no longer be human, and I could well imagine that philosophy would have no place in a world populated by such unreflective creatures. Jean Francois Lyotard (1991) has hinted and I agree with him that our humanity is at present being threatened by an inhuman system of global development, but also that the resources exist within us to resist the dehumanizing effects of such a system, even if, in the process, we have to draw on something within us which is inhuman in a different sense: the sense of that which will always escape the various processes of rationalization (or normalization , Foucault would say) typical of an ... There were rows of seats on both side of the gym, and even stairs and a elevator that led to a balcony like, second floor where you could get a bird s eye view of the whole gym. I had six matches that day, and surprising the match where I lost is the not the most memorable. Many people have fond memories of their time as a child and would do anything to get it back. However, in Barrie s Peter Pan, childhood is seen as a horror experience. This novel is read in stark contrast to Walt Disney s popular movie version of Peter Pan. Disney s version shows three children on the adventure of their life. But, Barrie s Peter Pan is the exemplar of the childhood horror experience because of the actions of the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling, the actions of the character Captain James Hook, and the dangers inherent of being a child in this anarchistic place called Neverland. With a name like Darling one may assume that the holder of that name would be an inherently good person. However, this is not the case with the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling in Barrie s Peter Pan. The behavior of these two characters toward their own children allows the true childhood horror experience to be shown. For example, when Wendy Darling was born, Mr. Darling s first action as a father was to calculate whether or not he and his wife could afford to keep their infant daughter. With his wife still in bed, Mr. Darling . . . sat on the edge of Mrs. Darling s bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked at him imploringly (Barrie 8).
