In Mark Twain s novel The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, the symbolism of the Mississippi
River is evident as Jim and Huckleberry Finn escape down the river. Mark Twain grew up near
the river and in the time period of slavery. In his novel, Twain uses his knowledge from his
childhood, slavery was the largest national issue during Twain s teenage years. The North and the

In The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry shows that he is escaping from everything

Traveling in the river allows Huck to be free from society and laws and to go anywhere that he
pleases to. Huckleberry Finn and Jim relate being on the raft in the Mississippi River to having
freedom, this is shown when Huck states So, in two seconds, away we went, a sliding down the
river, and it did seem so good to be free again and all by ourselves on the big river and nobody to
bother us (Twain 259). When on the river, Huck and Jim are alone, but have each other s
companionship. There is no one with them to make them follow laws or the rules of society.
The raft has become their safe place, Huck shows this when he says we said there warn t no
home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don t.
You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft (Twain 155). On the raft, Jim and Huck
have no worries and feel safe. They can be free with no restrictions on

Tourette s Syndrome is a disease of the nervous system in which people have uncontrollable tics.1
Tics are sudden movements that occur repeatedly and are the major symptom of Tourette s. There
are two types of tics, motor and vocal. Motor tics are body movements and vocal tics are sounds.2
Common examples of tics are excessive eye blinking, movements of the neck, shoulder or limbs,
throat clearing and grunting.3 These tics are extremely difficult to control and worsen during times
