Civic culture In Yugoslavia Essay
One definition of ethnicity reads as followed identity with or membership in a particular racial,
national, or cultural group and observance of that group s customs, beliefs, or language . Ethnicity
defines many of us but a few want our definition to be cleansed and this is when civil conflict arises.
Ethnicity is frequently cited as an explanation for conflicts in the post cold war era. Yugoslavia, a
prime example of a system that encountered ethnic conflict that led to a violent civil war, consisted of
six republics and two autonomous districts. The government at the time wanted control of these
republics but the republics wanted to be free from government control. There was a push by several
ethnic groups to form their own sovereign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These congruities of blood, speech, custom, and so on, are seen to have an ineffable, and at times
overpowering, coerciveness in and of themselves. One is bound to one s kinsman, one s neighbor, one
s fellow believer, ipso facto; as a result not merely of personal affection, practical necessity, common
interest, or incurred obligation but at least in great part by virtue of some unaccountable absolute
import attributed to the very tie itself. The general strength of such primordial bonds, and the types of
them that are important, differ from person to person, from society to society, and from time to time.
But for virtually every person, in every society, at almost all times, some attachments seem to flow
more from a sense of natural some would say spiritual affinity than from social interaction. The
cultural primordialist is easier to accept in today s modern world. For primordialists, ethnic bonds and
hatreds are fundamental to one s identity, meaning that conflicts between ethnic groups are inevitable.
Conflicts will by definition be extremely brutal and violent because there is no room for compromise
on one s spiritual ties and cultural beliefs.
Instrumentalist, the second field of thought is when you can differentiate groups from tribes and
identity is situational. In modernization it changes the class system within society but does not
necessarily lead to conflict. Instrumentalism is when ethnic conflict occurs when it

Why Is Oprah Winfrey Important
The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams, Oprah Winfrey once stated
(Bodnick). Oprah started her immense adventure at a young age and is still on it. Even though there
were many hills and bumps on her adventure, she has so far succeeded in achieving anything she has
ever wanted. By always trying and never giving up, Winfrey is now an icon around the world, and she
lives the life that she dreamed about as a child. Oprah is an American legend because she overcame a
troublesome childhood, was successful in television shows, movies, and literature, and now influences
today s society in many ways.

My Experience At Panera Bread
Life teaches us lessons every day. Sometimes when we are in the midsts of frustration or confusion we
never see clearly or understand the lesson from the situations we are put in. It is only through
moments of reflection when a person can begin to see how certain situations have shaped their way of
thinking or doing things. For a little over half a year, I worked a part time job during my senior year of
high school at Panera Bread. During my time there i was able to observe and see all kinds of different
family dynamics and people walk through the door every day. It was strange, it was different, and it
was amazing all at the same time to see all of those different walks of life. A favorite memory of mine
there that I will never forget occurred on Super Bowl Sunday night. Looking back on my experience
from that frustrating night, I find that i learned the value of teamwork, work relationships, and I
learned how the most unpleasant situations can turn into great unexpected surprises. To start at the
very beginning, I have always had this certain manager that i could never really get along with
workwise. Her name was Melissa and she was a corporate trained manager, making her more official
and strict then the other managers and always going by the books . She was a short, long grey haired
women that always wore these glasses that made her look like an old scary librarian. She had the
nickname monster mo among the employees at the store for a reason. It was a fact known

Set It Off Themes
Set It Off (1996) is an action packed, star studded film focusing on the lives of four African American
female friends in a tough inner city environment who are willing to go to any length, including bank
robbery, to escape the limitations and struggles of their gender, race, and socioeconomic status.
According to director Gary Gray, the film is not so much about robbing banks as choices young sisters
make when their backs are against the wall (Gregory 1996, 56). While the film has similar urban
youth struggles found in many of the other ghettocentric films of the 1990s, Set It Off distinguishes
itself in the genre due to presenting a largely unique all star cast of blacktresses and also for portraying
themes concentrated on the plight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in contrast to the other exclusively male dominated and themed films also released in the
decade, when Set It Off was coauthored by Kate Lanier and Takashi Bufford in the early 1990s, it was
intentionally grounded in close observation of the harsh realities faced by four female friends living in
Los Angeles, California. In an opening scene, Frankie is fired for having a personal connection to a
man who robs the bank where she is a bank teller even though she clearly has no involvement in the
robbery. Stoney s younger brother is later that evening wrongfully gunned down by police at his own
high school graduation ceremony when he is mistakenly identified as being the same neighborhood
friend who had earlier robbed Frankie s bank. Because she is a single mother earning low wages and
has no means to pay for childcare, T.T. s young son is taken away by child protective services when
the child is injured at her janitorial job as soon as desperation forces her to bring him to work with her.
Each of these closely chronological events, most notably T.T. s necessity to obtain money for legal
fees in order to regain custody of her son, lead the foursome to form a pact to rob banks together. Cleo
is the only friend who appears to have no clear aspiration to leave their urban lifestyle.

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Literary Analysis
Romanticized stories are those that show an idyllic yet unrealistic view of reality. It s the picturesque
quality of romance that draws the reader in. One example of this is in An Occurence at Owl Creek
Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. In An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge, Bierce increases the impact of the
story s ending by romantically depicting Farquhar s escape and following the romantic portrayal with
a sudden snap back to reality. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge follows a man named Peyton
Farquhar before, during, and after his execution. The ending of the story is told to seem like Farquhar
heroically escapes the execution and makes it back to his loving wife, however, in the last paragraph it
is made clear that the romantically described escape was just what flashed before his eyes during his
death. The romantic depiction of his imagined escape is what makes the ending so powerful. It brings
the reader on a happy journey before harshly turning back to reality. ... Show more content on

strength, Farquhar also seems to gain immunity to death during his escape. When fired at after
escaping the noose, some of [the bullets] touched him on the face and hands, then fell away,
continuing their descent (2). Instead of killing him, bullets just fall away from him in a romantically

The Photograph, Two Beds
The photograph, Two Beds, Two Windows taken by Jack Leigh is a silver gelatin print from 1981. In
this era of color photography, a photograph like this with black, white and grey hues is a novelty,
especially for the younger generation. On first glance, the exhibit appears to be a simple photograph of
a cabin with two beds and two windows giving a view of a coastline and an ocean in the distance.
Even then it does manage to strike a chord and one can identify with The Conflict Within the human
mind. It is a perfect metaphorical representation of the two sides of the human mind. On seeing the
photo for the first time one can conclude that it shows the interior of a bedroom in a cabin and that it is
located on the coast. The room has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas outside the windows, one can see some shrubbery followed by a coastline and an endless
ocean stretching up to the horizon outside. Its vastness is compelling. There are two beds inside the
room. The bed to the left is covered with a ruffled bed sheet of indistinct and dull print. It even has a
pillow flung on top of it. The other is covered neatly with a bright bed sheet having a flower print
design. Here the pillow is tucked away beneath the sheet. Out of the two windows in the room, the one
on the left has the shutter half way down and the one to the right has the shutter wide open. But both
windows are shut and at the top, light can be seen streaming in mainly through the unshuttered
window. It helps brighten, mostly the right side of the room. Windows and beds are separated by
chasms of dark shadows. The walls are made of horizontal planks of wood. Outside the window, one
can see shrubs causing a barricade like appearance. This is followed by the coastline and the ocean
waves crashing against it. In the distance one can see the sky meeting the ocean at the horizon.
This photograph of a bedroom overlooking the coastline in grey hues immediately sets one in a
reflective mood. The use of sharp lines and the closed space in the cabin is strikingly similar to a
closed human mind. The bedroom, a place of leisure and rest can be considered a representation of the
subconscious mind. Here one s

Introduction:
In the field of public health, food borne illnesses are a major concern because it has been estimated
that each year 76 million cases occur in the United States causing 5,000 deaths (Suo et al., 2010). In
2008, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention s FoodNet surveillance program reported over 18
thousand cases of food borne illnesses occurred in 10 states (Center for Disease Control and
Prevention [CDC], 2008). According to estimates from the CDC (2011), the most common food borne
pathogens that maybe seen in the United States are Norvovirus (58%), Clostridium perfringens (10%),
Salmonella (11%), Campylobacter spp. (9%), and Staphylococcus aureus (3%). Among the other 9%

The emergence of DNA based technologies such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and
microarray analysis have been utilized in the rapid detection and identification of many pathogenic
bacteria (Mothershed Whitney, 2006; Versalovic Lupski, 2002). The expansion of these technologies
has significantly enhanced the sensitivity, specificity and the rapid detection of microorganisms (Suo
et al., 2010). Microarray technologies have the potential to perform high throughput detection of
multiple pathogens. Recent work with specific oligonucleotide probes suggests that pathogen
detection can be performed on a sample that contains a mixed culture of bacteria (Kim et al., 2008).

Purpose of Research:
Previous work with DNA based technologies to accurately detect and identify human pathogens has
been demonstrated. Furthermore, three methods have been utilized: 1) amplification of one or more
universal genes (16S rRNA and 23S rRNA) through PCR, 2) amplification of pathogen specific
markers (toxins, virulence factors) using multi plex PCR and 3) amplification of random DNA
fragments (Kim et al., 2008). Kim et al. (2008) state that the first two methods is flawed due to the
limited number of probes utilized and that the amplification of universal genes would not discriminate
below species level due to the fact that these genes are highly conserved within the genus. On the
other hand, Kim et al. (2008) reported that

the New England Patriots in 2010, where he became the youngest active player on any roster in the
NFL (Aaron Hernandez Essay). He was only one of two tight end players on one of the leading teams
in the National Football League. During his 2010 season, he was named Rookie of the Week by Pepsi;

Hernandez not only imitated his father s sports star status playing for the Patriots, but also became
involved with criminals and took on the role of his father s gang type lifestyle and began using drugs.
His lifestyle choices almost prevented him from gaining his success as an athlete in the NFL. Despite
his obvious talents, NFL teams were wary of drafting Hernandez due to his admitted flunking of a
drug test. Privately, many teams also worried about his association with gang types from his home
neighborhood. He fell to the fourth round in the 2010 NFL draft before the New England Patriots
selected him with the 113th overall pick (Bio, 2015). Once he was drafted, Hernandez quickly proved
his professionalism as a football player. He had 45 catches in his first year, which was a Patriots team
record for the tight ends, helping the team secure the AFC Championship. In his second year, playing
alongside with Rob Gronkowski, he led the Patriots offense with 24 touchdowns and 2,237 receiving
yards, helping secure the team s position in the Super Bowl XLVI. Then in his third year he was
injured, but was still positioned to become a leader of the team, which was recognized by the Patriots
with his sizable signing bonus (A E, 2015). Although Hernandez would not be indicted for murder
until 2013, his legal problems began in early 2007, while still attending the University of Florida.

Modernism Essay
Modernism is characterized by the rejection of tradition. Creatives of the Modernist era questioned
what came before, looking for fresh ways to interpret familiar subjects, rejecting historical themes
while searching for a means to understand and communicate the present (Medina 1995). Furthermore,
Belting (2003, 17) states Modernism embraced all the crises and schisms of the modern world . The
key points of this paper will be ascertained through the evaluation of four European Modernist
artworks produced between 1860 and 1935. These artworks include La Montagne Saint Victoire by
Paul Cézanne displaying angular lines, color modulation, and geometricized forms; a classic example
of Divisionism and Pointillism by Georges Seurat Sunday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modernism s quest for creative possibilities encouraged artists to produce visually distorted depictions
of standard subjects, whilst others began exploring subject matter devoid of any relationship with
observable surroundings, resulting in abstraction. (Nicholls 2009).
A discernible example of Modernism s rejection of earlier artistic tradition is La Montagne Saint
Victoire (figure 2) by Paul Cézanne (1902 4). Cézanne produced over thirty oil paintings and
numerous watercolors on the topic of Mont Sainte Victoire, portraying nature as geometrized shapes
and pronounced colour sequences (Courchia et al. 2011). In La Montagne Saint Victoire, Cézanne
created a streamlined, structured landscape, using angular territories of pigment and elementary
shapes of ...cylinder, sphere and the cone (De La Croix, Gardner, and Tansey 1975, 701). Cézanne s
unblended fields of color, and vibrant to cool modulation, created spatial dimension enhanced by
prismatic and lustrous qualities. Rather than imitate the visual experience of the physical world as
observed in prior traditions such as Neoclassicism and Realism, Cézanne embraced the confines of the
two dimensional surface, placing colorful fragments in harmonious arrangements to realize the
essence of the motif (Miller 2017; Loran 1970), consequently, Cézanne s new pictorial imagery
inspired ground breaking art trends such as Cubism and Symbolism (Lichtenstein 1964;

Digestion Reactions Lab Report
Gas Production in Relation to Combustion Reactions
Introduction
Chew, swallow, digest, and pass: these may not seem like anything other than simple functions, but
they are very important when it comes to the process of digestion, as well as, the environment. This is
because all of these actions relate to the subject of gas production. Reactions in which gasses are
formed take place in many aspects of the natural world. Whether it is within the atmosphere or within
the body. A gas that is a perfect example for both of these situations is CO2. In relation to biological
function, CO2 is produced by internal combustion reactions. Combustion reactions are, simply put, the

In this case, digestion is left to bacteria living within the digestive tract (Health and Science Pipeline
Initiative, n.d.). An important example of this bacteria is Lactobacillus Acidophilus, commonly
referred to as L. acidophilus (Robertson, 2017). It is of the Gram positive species and the
Lactobacillus genus (Hammes, n.d.). It can be located in large amounts in the small intestine, where it
assists in the fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates and the production of lactic acid (Williams,
n.d.). Another microbial bacteria that produces lactic acid is Bifidobacterium longum. This bacteria is
of the Bifidobacterium genus and the Gram positive species (Dority, 2017). It is most densely found in
the large intestine. Without regulation of these bacteria, problems can arise, such as difficulty properly
digesting dairy (Williams, n.d.). This is why it is common to be prescribed probiotic supplements after
taking antibiotics, which can kill off this helpful bacteria (Health and Science Pipeline Initiative, n.d.).
Another bacteria, still important but found in less quantity, is Escherichia coli, commonly referred to
as E. coli. It is of the Escherichia species and the Gram negative species (UWLAX , n.d.). Its
functionality in the human body is essential for the absorption of vitamins in the large intestine such

Compare and contrast essay: In person communication vs Email.
Technology developments made us able to fasten our daily activities, to reach people in every
part of the globe and communicate rapidly, everywhere and instantly. Although this is
advantageous in terms of time and convenience, it could be not the best choice in terms of human
communication. In fact, according to recent researches, human communication works in a
complicate way and involves more than a mere exchange of information. The lack of direct
contact can undermine an effective communication and cause misunderstandings. It is important
to realize when email communication should be set aside in favor of in person communication in ...

To illustrate this, communication studies affirm that 38 percent of a
message is expressed by voice intonation, 55 percent by body language and facial expressions,
and only 7 percent is derived from the words. All these aspects that constitute communication,
of course, cannot be perceived by the addressee of a simple Email. This makes more clear why
we communicate more effectively in face to face conversations. There are also neurological
reason that affect our perceptions when we communicate in person: during in person
communication the thoughts and feelings of the communicator resound in the brain of the
receiver, neurological responses are sharp and the message is understood in a more rounded and
detailed way. In a sense, in face to face communication occurs a sort of synchronization between
the communicator`s and the receiver`s minds. Empathy is another key factor that plays a great
rule in this regard. Empathy activates our mirror neurons making us able to connect with our
interlocutor, understand his feelings and detect other messages hidden in his tone of voice and
body language. Facial expression cannot be substituted by emoji and shades in the tone of

Coming of Age in The Man Who was Almost a Man by Richard...
The Man Who Was Almost a Man
What does it mean for someone to become a man? How does one get the key or password to becoming
a man? Some believe that becoming a man is just referring to a coming of age, and it somewhat is,
however there is more. In the short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man by Richard white, Dave,
the main character is a young boy trying to become a man and is searching for the key. However, there
are certain ways to do things in society, and there are ways to not, and both of these ways have their
benefits and consequences. In this short story Dave sees the gun as a symbol of manhood, and it will
set him free of his childhood.

Dave still shows thoughts pertaining to the attainable manliness of having a gun by thoughts of
shooting at Mr. Hawkins s house. It seems as if Dave s thoughts are blurred and all he sees is the key
to becoming a man is having a gun and using it so he is doing this as much as he can along with his
crave for power, even though it is just causing others to have even less respect for a reckless
irresponsible child with a gun. However, Dave s wishes were still granted when he is forced to start
maturing into being a man more rapidly than others and having to take responsibility for his actions.
Every choice has its benefits and its consequences, unluckily, with Dave s choices the consequences
greatly outweighed the benefits that were being received. Dave had the wrong idea and believed that a
gun could symbolize becoming a man whenever all it actually did is rush him into something that he is
not ready for, and cause him to do wrong in the eyes of his family and the society. Back to the
question, What does it mean for someone to become a man? One could say that Dave eventually
learned his lesson by the end of the short story that you cannot push respect upon yourself by others
with force. Becoming a man is by definition when a person with the qualities often associated with
males such as bravery, spirit, or toughness grows out of their childhood and matures into adulthood.

Examples Of The Crucible And The Columbine Shootings
We Cannot (E)scapegoat What Happened The mainstream media is constantly being blamed for
crimes that people themselves commit. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing in the
woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly religious
society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine shooting was a tragic
event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors committing the crime killed
themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified public to blame the incident on the
media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and the Columbine shootings are similar in
people standing up for incoherent children and deaths for selfish reasons, they are also very different.
Children in high school were killed in the Columbine shooting while adults were killed in The
Crucible and the who was targeted. A scapegoat, by definition is, A person who is blamed for the
wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency (Oxford dictionary).
The Crucible is easily one of the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town was completely prepared
to blame witches for the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed Marilyn Manson, a man
known for his outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students murdered 12 teachers and
students in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed suicide before
incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public standing up for incoherent
children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these stories. People were killed
because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these kids were calling out. The two
criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts. Dylan Klebold, one of the two
seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit suicide. They had gotten arrested
previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that year trying to convince everyone they
were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as well. Eric Harris wrote in his journal, You

Chili Con Carne Research Paper
Chili con carne or Texas Red chili has been declared the official state dish of Texas. Texans are well
known for their strong opposition to chili made with beans. While some regional varieties of chili
include and even focus on beans, Texas chili is made from stewed meat and chili peppers, giving the
dish its Spanish name, chili con carne (literally: chili peppers with meat).
Chili con carne is said to have been created by immigrants from the Canary Islands as far back as
1723. They incorporated the native peppers, onions, garlic, and spices like oregano to create a dish
similar to one from their homeland, where a similar chili pepper grew. The dish evolved when cattle
drivers began to add fresh meat they hunted along the way, which was anything

Changing Health Care Policy Changes
Running head: CHANGES IN HEALTH POLICY Changes in Health Policy Terri Obey Kaplan
University Unit 6 August 12, 2015 Abstract When contemplating health care policy changes, several
economic issues in health care must be considered. These include the financial issues affecting the
health sector and have an impact on health policies. Policy makers face unending challenges due to the
health sector revenues that are always rising. Another challenge is decreased funding and failure of the
health insurance services. Cost One of the issues is the increasing cost of healthcare which is
dominating the health policy in U.S. this is accompanied by an increase in spending on healthcare.
According to projections by the government, the spending on medical care will continue to rise. U.S
spends more money on health care than any other nation globally (Holtz, 2013). The increase in the
spending is as a result of improved tools for disease diagnosis, better surgical interventions among
others. This raises an issue for the policy makers on the maximum GDP percentage that a country has
to spend on healthcare, and whether the nation will afford the cost that is continually growing. In
contemplating any change in the health policy, policy makers should consider the cost of the
healthcare and the ability of the nation to support that high cost. Funding Decrease in funding is
another economic challenge in health care. The amount of finances coming from various sources not

Taking a Look at Veganism
For this assignment, I volunteered at the Earthstock celebration on April 25th. Earthstock is a week
long, campus wide event that is used to educate students, alumni, and the general public about
sustainable practices that help the environment. During the final Earthstock celebration, exhibitors
from many different organizations, such as EmPower Solar and Vegan Outreach, set up tables
displaying information regarding healthy lifestyle practices, alternative diets, and sustainable forms of
energy. For this event, I was unfortunately assigned the task of helping other student volunteers and
exhibitors check in and set up their tables. However, after volunteering, I was able to observe and
learn about many of the organizations that had attended the event.
One of the most notable parts of Earthstock for me was the reciting of the Green Pledge. Just by

Characteristics Of Successful Business Leader
There is no perfect skill set for a successful business owner and the cookie cutter approach some
people take is wrong. Businesses vary, and as a result, the skills needed to own and run them vary
also. With that, there are some general traits that successful business leader should have.
1. Optimism:
You must be an optimist because, at some point, you have to see beyond the hard times to see the
better times. Optimism and confidence tend to go together. You, as the business owner, must be able to
make it through the tough times because you have hope on getting better.
2. Able To Sacrifice:
Being in the bottom spot on the totem pole is something that you are going to encounter as owner.
Your business takes precedence over just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most people start a business for self employment as they can t get along with their boss.
5. Common Sense:
As a successful business leader, you need to have the ability to anticipate problems and take steps to
prevent them. Successful businesses look to outsiders like there are rarely any problems. What they
don t see is a business owner that is keeping his/her finger on the pulse of the business and the
industry. When they anticipate changes coming, they take steps to prepare their business in case it
comes about. That preparation and willingness to change can make the difference between success and
failure. Done well and it s just about invisible to anyone except the business owner.
6. Be Organized:
Being organized is a major problem to most of the business leaders. In case you can not handle
various things at the same time, then you shouldn t go into business for yourself. There is NEVER just
one thing going on when you own business. There are customer problems; there are vendor/supplier
problems, and there are competition problems. As a business owner, you have to be able to quickly
know and understand which problems need attention first. You have to be able to prioritize your
problems and know that those same priorities may change on a moments notice.
7. Be a Leader:
People, especially your employees will always be looking to you for answers. Answers about your
products, your market, your competition and just about everything else. As the

The Documentary Whale Rider By Witi Ihimaera
Nikki Caro Whale Rider Speech
Hello Year 8, my name is Nikki Caro and today I am going to talk to you about the film Whale Rider. I
directed Whale Rider in 2002. I did not write the plot by I was adapting he book Whale Rider written
by Witi Ihimaera. When I was directing the film I wanted to keep the traditional Maori culture as a
main feature of the film and also represent the changes to the culture through generational differences.
Today I will be talking to you about how I used filmic techniques to represent the strong sense of
Maori culture and to show the generational differences between the Maori elders and the modern
world. I will show the use of filmic techniques through two short film extracts from Whale Rider

I then showed Nanny Flowers talking to Koro saying No good to you, you reckon? , Koro then shh s
her. This scene shows how Nanny flowers sees Pai potential and how she can adapt to the modern
world of women s leadership. This is the first time we can see the changing cultural traditions in this
clip.
When the children are performing, we can see how they have less respect for the culture by mucking
up and not concentrating. I showed this disrespect by doing a full length shot on all the kids and then
zooming in on Pai s face showing her in shock. I also added in a scene showing the community
laughing. This scene shows how the whole community isn t committed to their culture. Pai is the only
child who doesn t find this disrespect funny. This scene shows how Pai is fully committed to her
culture and the generational differences between the elders and the new generation. The new
generation in the film do care about their culture which is the complete opposite to the elder
generations who show full respect to their ancestors.
When Pai s father, Porourangi arrives, the mise en scene of their surroundings is important because it
connects them with their culture. Their surroundings include carvings and cultures of their ancestors
and their Gods .
In the second film extract, I started the scene by doing an establishing shot on the whale rider, Paikea

Artists intentions are sometimes difficult to pinpoint. Other times, they are clearly and expansively

Essay Tsarism in Russia
Tsarism in Russia
Although the 1905 Revolution did not bring Tsarism to its demise, it had important consequences on
Tsarism. It illuminates the problems of Russian society and exposed the government s weaknesses.
Nevertheless, the Tsar managed to suppress his opponents and appeased the masses, saving his
regimes from collapse. However, this security was only temporarily as the root of Russia s problems
were not solved and WWI in 1914 was the last straw for the decaying regime. Hence, I agree with the
statement to a large extent.

By the October Manifesto, the Tsar allowed the formation of an elected legislative assembly, the
Duma. Technically, this would mean that the Tsar had to share his autocratic power with his people
and by inviting opposition into the government, he may be endangering his status. However, this was
not the case. Ironically, it helped strengthened the Tsar s power. The forming of the Duma appeased
the liberals and satisfied their appetite for reforms, hence they are willing to cooperate with the Tsar
rather than confront Tsarism directly. In addition, the Duma did not reduce the Tsar s power. Not only
did the Duma had limited powers to begin with, it was subjected to the whims and fancy if the Tsar.
The Tsar could dissolve the Duma should he not like their proposals and they could only give
suggestions to the Tsar. The Fundamental Laws passed in April 1906 decreed theta the Tsar had
absolute power and the last say in all matters, hence, the Tsar had not lose any of his power and with

Essay Use Caution When Accommodating Scripture
Use Caution when Accommodating Scripture with Current Scientific Theory (Word Count:229)
In writing on the 24 hour view of Creation in The Genesis Debate, J. Ligon Duncan III and David W.
Hall make the excellent point that we should always be cautious when attempting to harmonize
Scripture with the latest scientific theories. They write, we should be wary of those who accommodate
Scripture to current scientific theory, because he who marries the spirit of the age will be a widower in
the next. This is important to keep in mind, regardless of the issue, or your position on it. If we are too
quick to interpret Scripture based on what the scientific community is currently espousing, we will
seem foolish should that theory be later disproven.

Archer point something out which is commonly overlooked regarding the possibility of death prior to
the Fall. Young earth creationists commonly advocate that the sin of Adam brought about animal
death, and prior to the Fall there was no death whatsoever (with the possible exclusion of insect or
plant death). Much of this position is based on God s proclamation that the creation He had made was
very good. They then use this to support the idea of a young earth. Ross and Archer explain why this
fails:
Many Christians seem to forget that Adam and Eve were not the first creatures to sin. According to
Scripture, Satan committed the first sin. When Satan sinned, he brought about his own spiritual death
and the spiritual death of all the angels who joined him in his rebellion against God. Through Adam
and Eve, Satan infected the human race with sin, but even that seeming disaster fits into God s plan for
conquering evil and revealing His grace and

The Causes Of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a big problem in the United States today. Domestic violence is anything from
sibling abuse to elder abuse. Domestic violence has many names. Spouse abuse talks about abuse from
a husband/wife or a boyfriend/girlfriend. Domestic violence is not just physical, but is behavior that is
intended to control another person through the use of verbal assaults.
One big cause of domestic violence is stress. Things such as being unemployed, drugs, alcohol, or
little money can cause a person a lot of stress. Also, it can sometimes be due to the abuser being
abused themselves in their childhood. Statistics show that many people who are abused in their
childhood become abusers themselves.
When domestic violence occurs there are many types of abuse that can happen. The first kind is
physical violence. Physical violence includes anything that is intended to physically injure the person.
The second type of abuse is emotional abuse which is consistently doing or saying things to
emotionally harm another person.
The third kind is sexual abuse. Just because someone is married to someone doesn t mean that they
have to have sex with them. Even though these are different kinds of abuse, all of them are harming in
their own ways.
People who have been abused think that there is no way out. They continue to put up with the abuse
and eventually learn to deal with it. Also due to the history of domestic violence, it is still seen as
acceptable in some ways and not a large threat

When discussing the greatest poetic minds to ever put their genius to use, it is nearly impossible to not

morals by writing complex themes and descriptive scenes that are all based on simple situations that
either Eliot himself had lived through, or that someone he knew closely had. By doing so, Eliot was

Rhetorical Analysis Of Black Power
Stokely Carmichael (aka Kwame Ture), was the first person to coin the slogan Black Power in
reaction to a shooting of a civil rights activist provocatively on June 16th, 1966. Ture originally
brandished the term in an unclear way, so both his supporters and critics can find their own
interpretation of the meaning. Black Power was described as a way for black people in this country to
unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to get to
define their own goals, to lead their own organizations to resist the racist institutions and values of this
society, said by Ture and Charles V. Hamilton in a book called, Black Power: The Politics of

Information Storage And Management System
Introduction
With the development of technology, information storage and management have been vital of
importance. Information effectiveness and efficiency are determined by how well data is organised
and processed. The term data have been widely employed in different human activities, including
science, business, education, law and the like. Here, data is a means for representation of facts,
concepts, and instructions in order to communicate (Sumathi Esakkirajan 2007). Nevertheless, if data
management is ineffective, and relevant information cannot be found quickly, a large amount data will

the development of data models. Secondly, it will discuss DBMS products based on the relational data
model. Following that, DBMS products based on logical models will be illustrated. Lastly, strengths
and weaknesses between different data models will be demonstrated.
1. Overview of DBMSs and the development of data models
1.1 Overview of DBMSs
A DBMS contains four parts, the data model, the data definition language (DDL), the data
manipulation language (DML), and the data dictionary. To begin with, the data model describes how
data are logically constructed. Next, programmers use DDL to specify the types of information and
structure of the database, which is the important connection between the logical (how to perceive data)
and physical views (how data are stored and processed) of the database. Thirdly, DML is used to
manipulate the data, where end users or programmers are allowed to extract data in order to satisfy
information requests and develop applications. Manipulative verbs are included in DML, such as
modify, delete or select . In addition, the data dictionary is used for the storage of data elements and
data characteristics, including ownership, physical representation, authorization, and security
(technology guide). The use of a DBMS

Solvolysis of t Butyl Bromide: The Effect of Solvent Polarity on Reaction Rates
Katherine Lee
Georgetown University
Introduction
The solvolysis of t butyl bromide is an SN1 reaction, or a first order nucleophilic substitution reaction.
An SN1 reaction involves a nucleophilic attack on an electrophilic substrate. The reaction is SN1
because there is steric obstruction on the electrophile, bromine is a good leaving group due to its large
size and low electronegativity, a stable tertiary carbocation is formed, and a weak nucleophile is
formed. Since a strong acid, HBr, is formed as a byproduct of this reaction, SN1 dominates over E1.
The first step in an SN1 reaction is the formation of a highly reactive carbocation, in which a leaving
group is ejected. The ionization to form a carbocation is the rate limiting step of an SN1 reaction, as it
is highly endothermic and has a large activation energy. The subsequent nucleophilic attack by solvent
and deprotonation is fast and does not contribute to the rate law for the reaction. The Hammond
Postulate predicts that the transition state for any process is most similar to the higher energy species,
and is more affected by changes to the free energy of the higher energy species. Thus, the reaction rate
for the solvolysis of t butyl bromide is unimolecular and entirely dependent on the initial
concentration of t butyl bromide. Mechanism 1. The Solvolysis of t Butyl Bromide
The reaction shown above is the reaction mechanism for t butyl

Science I Term Paper
The research paper that this term paper is based on is Interactions Among Plant Transcription Factors
Regulating Expression of Stress responsive Genes, Sony Malhotra and R. Sowdhamini, National
Center for Biological Sciences, June 2014, Bioinformatics and Biology Insights.
Abstract:
Plants are known to respond to abiotic stress by up or down regulating their genes. This is done by
activating transcription factors. It is known that these transcription factors, though they have DNA
binding domains, interact amongst each other for the regulation of gene production. In order to find
out which transcription factors interact and how, the research uses genetic and molecular structure
information available in databases and computationally analyses the data. The factors that lead to the
conclusion of interaction between transcription factors includes spatial proximity and possible
interaction poses. Molecular docking is used to predict the interaction poses and DockScore is a
scoring system used to rank the interaction poses.
Introduction:
Plants are immobile and therefore need mechanisms to counteract stresses that they face from their
environment. Cold, high light, drought, salinity, abscisic acid, rehydration and combination of stresses
like cold drought salt stress are common abiotic stresses that plants encounter. In order to deal with
these stresses, plants either up regulate or down regulate their genes; that is, they increase the

Second Great Awakening Research Paper
Introduction
The First Great Awakening was a religious revival that was associated with Jonathan Edwards an
American evangelical preacher and Methodist evangelist George Whitfield. The revivals renewed
interest in the Christian faith. During the revivals, it was believed that people experienced
conversions, salvation, regeneration or spiritual rebirth. It was a time of restructuring and re evaluating
political social and religions ideas. The movement sparked the American Revolution with was fueled
by the growing religious alienation between the Revivalist and the established religion of England.
According to Alister E. McGrath, The dominant theme was the desire to break free from the
oppressive and exploitative influence of England . Gusto L. Gonzalez noted that, The Great
Awakening was the first movement to unite the thirteen colonies, which would become the United

Short-Term Synthesis
Within the hippocampus, long term potentiation (LTP) results due to the increased activity between a
presynaptic and a postsynaptic neuron. The stimulation and subsequent depolarisation of a presynaptic
CA3 pyramidal neuron results in the opening of voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC). Thus, an
influx in Ca2+ occurs, and glutamate vesicles are fused via synaptotagmin. The fusing of these
vesicles allows the release of glutamate, a neurotransmitter which will bind to AMPA receptors and
induce the influx of Na+ into the postsynaptic CA1 pyramidal neuron. This will result in the
depolarisation of the postsynaptic neuron, which is one of the requirements for the opening and
consequent induction of Ca2+ through the NMDA receptor. Through a cascade ... Show more content

The test groups that wrote out the content 10x showed a significant increase in short term memory
versus test groups that utilised no writing. These results indicate that repetition increases neural
activity and thereby increases the levels of short term synaptic plasticity (STP). The effects of STP can
last between a few millisecond to minutes, whilst long term synaptic plasticity can last from minutes
to years (Pinar et al., 2017). The short term memory results are therefore not a strong indicator of the
strength of LTP occurring. In order to analyse this, long term memory was measured three weeks later.
The test group that viewed a relatable movie before writing out the content 10x, displayed a
significantly higher long term memory recall, and therefore showed an increase in LTP. Students
within the other groups showed lower levels of LTP which may have being caused by the LTD.
LTD is the opposing mechanism of LTP, resulting in a decreased synaptic strength and therefore
eliminating the formation of the memory. It occurs when Ca2+ flows through a voltage gated calcium
channels within the postsynaptic neuron, resulting in an alternative Ca2+ encoding. This different
encoding activates a protein phosphatase which induces a protein cascade that will dephosphorylate
and remove APMA receptors from the neural membrane. This deregulation of AMPA receptors
weakens the neural synapse and thereby results in the elimination of the

The Great Famine Of Irish Nationalism
French political leader Charles de Gaulle said that nationalism is when hate for people other than your
own comes first, by this definition turning points in Irish Nationalism can be seen not as what changed
as in regards love for Ireland, but what changed hatred for the English withinin Ireland. There are
numerous significant turning points in Irish Nationalism; it could be argued that The Great Famine is
the largest turning point in Irish Nationalism as it encouraged independence through means of
violence as well as cementing a deep rooted hatred of the English in Ireland. Equally, the failure of the
First Home Rule Bill can be maintained as the largest turning point as it led to the decline of the
liberals, Charles Stuart Parnell and constitutional nationalism. Alternatively, The First World War can
be judged as the prime turning point, mainly due to its short term affects. It split the nationalists,
which led to the Easter rising, and increased agitation over Home Rule.
It could be argued that The Great Famine was the utmost turning point in Irish Nationalism due to the
lack of action of the British Government, which left deep rooted hatred for the English within Ireland.
Government expenditure for the famine equaled a total of £8 million, 3% of the total government
budget. The British Government stuck closer to a laissez faire economic policy, which is echoed
through Charles Trevelyan who claimed that through relief people grow worse instead of better. The

The Tale Of Othello By William Shakespeare
The tale of Othello written by William Shakespeare is about several things; love, heroism, military,
isolation and sadness. The contrasts of characters within in this play are almost as remarkable as the
themes presented and evoked. Within this piece each character is balanced by another of similar or
contrasting characteristics. Desdemona is balanced by her opposite, Iago. Her love and concern for
others is at one end of the spectrum versus his hatred and concern for self at the other end. All of the
characters present a range and variety as striking and different as that produced by the opposite.
Othello and Iago are two opposites that balance each other s personality and action throughout this
piece. Their distinguishing qualities stand out to the mind s eye therefore when we are not thinking of
their actions or characterstics, the idea of them is still as present as ever.
Prior to the opening scene it can be assumed that Othello and Iago had a great relationship. There is
evidence throughout the play that prior to this point there had be confidence between the two men and
they were both looked at as men of excellent ability and character. Othello was known as a noble
Moor obtaining the highest military position. People also saw Iago as an upright and noble man as he
earned the nickname honest Iago. However as portrayed in the first scene and throughout the
remainder of the play, honest Iago becomes the mortal enemy of the noble Othello. We can tell that the
play is

Vivendi Vs Gameloft Case Study
4.2 Vivendi vs Gameloft
4.2.1 Overview
Vivendi is known for aggressively acquiring companies through financial pressure for some time now,
as observed with Havas (Vivendi, 2017), Dailymotion (Lunden, 2015) and buying CanalPlus s joint
owner s stakes (Keslassy, 2013). So as the trend goes, Vivendi wanted to return to the video game
industry and chose the largest mobile games developer, Gameloft, acquiring it through a hostile
takeover in 2016. The structure of the takeover as well as what caused it are detailed in further
sections.
4.2.2 The Process
In the October of 2015, Vivendi bought 6% shares in Gameloft and immediately within a week
increased it 10%, causing a small panic in Gameloft s upper management, issuing a public declaration
from Gameloft as well as its sister company Ubisoft, saying that Vivendi s involvement was quite
unwelcome (Morris, 2016) (cited in Nutt, 2016).
On February 2016, Vivendi again upped its share to 30%, forcing them to make a formal bid for
ownership of Gameloft according to the French Mergers and Acquisitions Law (Kerr, 2016), detailed
description of the law can be found in Appendix C. Although, proposition of the offer was mandatory
for Vivendi, Gameloft had no such reservations about accepting and it was made clear with their
statement, The offer launched by Vivendi has no strategic interest for Gameloft (cited from Nutt,
2016). After the initial rejection, Vivendi proposed to purchase all of Gameloft s share for a rate of €6
per share as opposed to the market price of €4, this was a fifty percent premium profit for all of
Gameloft s shareholders, but as bargaining goes the shareholders upped the offer to a rate of €8/share
which was double the stock price (Keslassy, 2016), ultimately leading Vivendi to reject the Michel
Guillemot s plea and acquiring Gameloft under its banner.
4.2.3 Causes of the Takeover
Moving on, to dissecting the acquisition, there are a few circumstances which were not directly in
Gameloft s yet were directly responsible for Vivendi s hostile takeover of Gameloft. They are detailed
below as follows:
Not So Big Fish In A Small Pond. Gameloft was a leading mobile developer with massive yearly
revenues, but this was only restricted to the video games

Essay about Matching Dell
MATCHING DELL CASE ANALYSIS
This analysis describes the case of computer and peripherals industry especially the successful
management of Dell Computer Corporation which grew twice as fast as its major rivals like Compaq,
Gateway, Hewlett Packard and IBM. The main reason for the success of Dell was their Direct Model
of selling computers which eliminated all traditional channels like distributors, resellers and retailers.
Traditionally all its competitors like IBM, HP, and Compaq etc. used reseller, retailers and distributors
to sell their computers to end users. IBM was the first company to launch its PC in 1981 and soon held
42% of the market. But the growth of IBM proved to be short ... Show more content on

Another important aspect of the logistics strategy adopted by Dell was that suppliers were encouraged
to locate warehouses and production facilities close to its assembly operations to ensure smooth flow
of materials across the value chain. This ensured that its value chain was capable enough to handle the
largest of orders in smallest possible time frame. Through this value chain the company was able to
introduce a wide range of products. All the above stated resources and capabilities decreased operating
costs with enhanced customer service and thus helped maintain substantial profit margins through
relatively low inventory and capital expenditures in comparison to the revenues. Thus if we talk in
terms of the strategy triangle we can say that Dell had the resources and capabilities such as highly
integrated sales forces, efficient supplier relations, a able leadership in Michael Dell, cross functional
excellence and outstanding corporate culture, which eventually led the company to achieve its core
strategy of direct distribution and selling and hence maintain a relatively high growth rate. I would
also like to mention that to improve its systems and processes, Dell hired management experience
from other companies like Motorola, Apple computer and Intel who focused especially on operations
and manufacturing and thus focused on return on invested

Professional Ethics In The Military
Professionals are not professionals simply because they say they are. Their clients, society as a whole,
have to accept their claims and trust the professions with jurisdiction over important areas of human
endeavor. Colonel Matthew Moten
To begin with, the profession of the Arms requires four key attributable codes of ethics; expertise,
trust, development, values and service. With these key professional ethics, a Soldier will be prepared
to discharge his duties through the use of the skills, trust, and character to the general public as a
servant of the Nation. That is why an American Professional Soldier is a specialist, a volunteer

The Human Resource (HR) Sergeant secures the rights and interests of the American People by

The preeminent military task, and what separates the military profession from all other occupations, is
that soldiers are routinely prepared to kill...in addition to killing and preparing to kill, the soldier has
two other principal duties some soldiers die and, when they are not dying, they must be preparing to
die. James H. Toner
The Profession of Arms calling is unique because of the lethality of our weapons and operations day to
day. We as Soldiers are tasked to do many things but the core purpose and reason the Army exist is to
apply lethal force. The moral implications of being a professional Soldier could not be greater and
compel us to be diligent in our examination of what it means to be a profession, and a professional
Soldier. Some believe that only officers were professional but while rebuilding the hollow Army,
professional status was extended beyond the officer corps and was earned through the professional
development by Warrant Officers, Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs) and Army

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder ( Asd )
Understanding Autism in Children
Sreedevi S Kamath
Cerro Coso Community College Abstract
This paper explains what Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is and how it manifests in children. It
explores the different symptoms of autism, treatments and intervention options. The paper examines
eight published works that research autism and possible intervention services applicable to help
children cope with the disorder. It explores the work of Harrop, Mcconachie, Emsley, Leadbitter and
Green (2013) to understand the symptoms of repetitive and restricted behaviors (RRBs) in children
with autism. It lists the various screening options like Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS),
Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT), Autism Screening Questionnaire, and Screening Tests for
Autism in Two Year Olds available for checking the presence of autism. It discusses treatment options
available and how and why early intervention services should be sought. It explores the Quality of
Life (QOL) that will be available to these children.

Feeling Small Art
Feeling Small: Scale and Proportion in Art As I walk on the grounds of the Nelson Atkins Museum of
Art in Kansas City, I encounter one of the Oldenburg and van Bruggen s giant shuttlecocks.
Additionally, as I view and walk around this giant shuttlecock, I cannot help but think of how this
object is disproportional, especially in comparison to it s surroundings. The shuttlecock is huge and
unbelievably larger than the average size of a shuttlecock, which would fit within the palm of my
hand. An altered view is created by the use of the visual principles of scale and proportion in order to
create this sculpture. Distinguishing between scale and proportion is significant in depicting a specific
image in which the size is questionable and cannot be visualized accurately. According to the
textbook, scale is the size relation of one thing to another. However, Proportion is ... Show more

The image is also funny because of the proportion of the objects within the piece of art. According to
the text, it is appeared that the badminton game was being played on the grass and it appears that the
shuttlecock fell during a game between two giants who used the museum as the net for the game. I
find this to be hilarious when I picture it in my head because the falsehood of the museum is amazing.
Normally a museum would be much larger than the individuals playing badminton and the objects
used to play the game. However, in this piece of art, it is the complete opposite and it makes me laugh
when thinking about the game of badminton. Although I am unsure if the artists intended to make the
artwork funny, I believe that it provides a sense of relief for the individuals viewing the pieces. The
artists deserve to be respected for the intelligent idea to create something that can be misinterpreted

The History Of The Universe From The Big Bang
Religions and cultures have their own versions of the origin stories, which are general anecdotes or
narratives in order to explain the existence and mysteries of the universe and the human beings. And
big history is also an origin story, attempting to examine the history of the Universe from the Big
Bang, explain the present and predict the future of the universe as well as the human beings. One of
the most important theme found in the Big history is the idea of increasing complexity and the term of
Goldilocks conditions , Christian suggests that the universe creates complexity when these conditions
require a favorable environment, which is neither too hot nor too cold, thus providing just the required
environment necessary for complexity to take place. These conditions found in the dissimilar
thresholds including the creation of the universe and the formation of the stars, the early human life
and the modern epoch.
The creation of the universe and the formation of the stars
To understand the history of the Universe, it is inevitable to conduct a thorough analysis that involves
a survey of the origin of the universe. As complex creatures, we are driven by a desire to understand
how the universe advances in complexity (Grinin, 2013). Understanding the universe also requires an
understanding why complexity results in vulnerability and fragility. To have an understanding of the
universe, it is required that we go back to the beginning of time, an estimated 13.8 billion

  • 2. Civic culture In Yugoslavia Essay One definition of ethnicity reads as followed identity with or membership in a particular racial, national, or cultural group and observance of that group s customs, beliefs, or language . Ethnicity defines many of us but a few want our definition to be cleansed and this is when civil conflict arises. Ethnicity is frequently cited as an explanation for conflicts in the post cold war era. Yugoslavia, a prime example of a system that encountered ethnic conflict that led to a violent civil war, consisted of six republics and two autonomous districts. The government at the time wanted control of these republics but the republics wanted to be free from government control. There was a push by several ethnic groups to form their own sovereign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These congruities of blood, speech, custom, and so on, are seen to have an ineffable, and at times overpowering, coerciveness in and of themselves. One is bound to one s kinsman, one s neighbor, one s fellow believer, ipso facto; as a result not merely of personal affection, practical necessity, common interest, or incurred obligation but at least in great part by virtue of some unaccountable absolute import attributed to the very tie itself. The general strength of such primordial bonds, and the types of them that are important, differ from person to person, from society to society, and from time to time. But for virtually every person, in every society, at almost all times, some attachments seem to flow more from a sense of natural some would say spiritual affinity than from social interaction. The cultural primordialist is easier to accept in today s modern world. For primordialists, ethnic bonds and hatreds are fundamental to one s identity, meaning that conflicts between ethnic groups are inevitable. Conflicts will by definition be extremely brutal and violent because there is no room for compromise on one s spiritual ties and cultural beliefs. Instrumentalist, the second field of thought is when you can differentiate groups from tribes and identity is situational. Sometimes when we are in the midsts of frustration or confusion we never see clearly or understand the lesson from the situations we are put in. It is only through moments of reflection when a person can begin to see how certain situations have shaped their way of thinking or doing things. For a little over half a year, I worked a part time job during my senior year of high school at Panera Bread. During my time there i was able to observe and see all kinds of different family dynamics and people walk through the door every day. It was strange, it was different, and it was amazing all at the same time to see all of those different walks of life. A favorite memory of mine there that I will never forget occurred on Super Bowl Sunday night. Looking back on my experience from that frustrating night, I find that i learned the value of teamwork, work relationships, and I learned how the most unpleasant situations can turn into great unexpected surprises. To start at the very beginning, I have always had this certain manager that i could never really get along with workwise. Her name was Melissa and she was a corporate trained manager, making her more official and strict then the other managers and always going by the books . She was a short, long grey haired women that always wore these glasses that made her look like an old scary librarian. She had the nickname monster mo among the employees at the store for a reason. • 5. Set It Off Themes Set It Off (1996) is an action packed, star studded film focusing on the lives of four African American female friends in a tough inner city environment who are willing to go to any length, including bank robbery, to escape the limitations and struggles of their gender, race, and socioeconomic status. According to director Gary Gray, the film is not so much about robbing banks as choices young sisters make when their backs are against the wall (Gregory 1996, 56). While the film has similar urban youth struggles found in many of the other ghettocentric films of the 1990s, Set It Off distinguishes itself in the genre due to presenting a largely unique all star cast of blacktresses and also for portraying themes concentrated on the plight ... However, in contrast to the other exclusively male dominated and themed films also released in the decade, when Set It Off was coauthored by Kate Lanier and Takashi Bufford in the early 1990s, it was intentionally grounded in close observation of the harsh realities faced by four female friends living in Los Angeles, California. In an opening scene, Frankie is fired for having a personal connection to a man who robs the bank where she is a bank teller even though she clearly has no involvement in the robbery. Stoney s younger brother is later that evening wrongfully gunned down by police at his own high school graduation ceremony when he is mistakenly identified as being the same neighborhood friend who had earlier robbed Frankie s bank. Because she is a single mother earning low wages and has no means to pay for childcare, T.T. s young son is taken away by child protective services when the child is injured at her janitorial job as soon as desperation forces her to bring him to work with her. Each of these closely chronological events, most notably T.T. s necessity to obtain money for legal fees in order to regain custody of her son, lead the foursome to form a pact to rob banks together. Cleo is the only friend who appears to have no clear aspiration to leave their urban lifestyle. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Literary Analysis Romanticized stories are those that show an idyllic yet unrealistic view of reality. It s the picturesque quality of romance that draws the reader in. One example of this is in An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. In An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge, Bierce increases the impact of the story s ending by romantically depicting Farquhar s escape and following the romantic portrayal with a sudden snap back to reality. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge follows a man named Peyton Farquhar before, during, and after his execution. The ending of the story is told to seem like Farquhar heroically escapes the execution and makes it back to his loving wife, however, in the last paragraph it is made clear that the romantically described escape was just what flashed before his eyes during his death. The romantic depiction of his imagined escape is what makes the ending so powerful. It brings the reader on a happy journey before harshly turning back to reality. ... In this era of color photography, a photograph like this with black, white and grey hues is a novelty, especially for the younger generation. On first glance, the exhibit appears to be a simple photograph of a cabin with two beds and two windows giving a view of a coastline and an ocean in the distance. Even then it does manage to strike a chord and one can identify with The Conflict Within the human mind. It is a perfect metaphorical representation of the two sides of the human mind. Its vastness is compelling. There are two beds inside the room. The bed to the left is covered with a ruffled bed sheet of indistinct and dull print. It even has a pillow flung on top of it. The other is covered neatly with a bright bed sheet having a flower print design. Here the pillow is tucked away beneath the sheet. Out of the two windows in the room, the one on the left has the shutter half way down and the one to the right has the shutter wide open. But both windows are shut and at the top, light can be seen streaming in mainly through the unshuttered window. It helps brighten, mostly the right side of the room. Windows and beds are separated by chasms of dark shadows. The walls are made of horizontal planks of wood. Outside the window, one can see shrubs causing a barricade like appearance. This is followed by the coastline and the ocean waves crashing against it. In the distance one can see the sky meeting the ocean at the horizon. This photograph of a bedroom overlooking the coastline in grey hues immediately sets one in a reflective mood. The emergence of DNA based technologies such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and microarray analysis have been utilized in the rapid detection and identification of many pathogenic bacteria (Mothershed Whitney, 2006; Versalovic Lupski, 2002). The expansion of these technologies has significantly enhanced the sensitivity, specificity and the rapid detection of microorganisms (Suo et al., 2010). Microarray technologies have the potential to perform high throughput detection of multiple pathogens. Recent work with specific oligonucleotide probes suggests that pathogen detection can be performed on a sample that contains a mixed culture of bacteria (Kim et al., 2008). This paper will Purpose of Research: Previous work with DNA based technologies to accurately detect and identify human pathogens has been demonstrated. Furthermore, three methods have been utilized: 1) amplification of one or more universal genes (16S rRNA and 23S rRNA) through PCR, 2) amplification of pathogen specific markers (toxins, virulence factors) using multi plex PCR and 3) amplification of random DNA fragments (Kim et al., 2008). Kim et al. (2008) state that the first two methods is flawed due to the limited number of probes utilized and that the amplification of universal genes would not discriminate below species level due to the fact that these genes are highly conserved within the genus. Privately, many teams also worried about his association with gang types from his home neighborhood. He fell to the fourth round in the 2010 NFL draft before the New England Patriots selected him with the 113th overall pick (Bio, 2015). Creatives of the Modernist era questioned what came before, looking for fresh ways to interpret familiar subjects, rejecting historical themes while searching for a means to understand and communicate the present (Medina 1995). Furthermore, Belting (2003, 17) states Modernism embraced all the crises and schisms of the modern world . Modernism s quest for creative possibilities encouraged artists to produce visually distorted depictions of standard subjects, whilst others began exploring subject matter devoid of any relationship with observable surroundings, resulting in abstraction. Cézanne produced over thirty oil paintings and numerous watercolors on the topic of Mont Sainte Victoire, portraying nature as geometrized shapes and pronounced colour sequences (Courchia et al. 2011). Cézanne s unblended fields of color, and vibrant to cool modulation, created spatial dimension enhanced by prismatic and lustrous qualities. Rather than imitate the visual experience of the physical world as observed in prior traditions such as Neoclassicism and Realism, Cézanne embraced the confines of the two dimensional surface, placing colorful fragments in harmonious arrangements to realize the essence of the motif (Miller 2017; Loran 1970), consequently, Cézanne s new pictorial imagery inspired ground breaking art trends such as Cubism and Symbolism (Lichtenstein 1964; ... Digestion Reactions Lab Report Gas Production in Relation to Combustion Reactions Introduction Chew, swallow, digest, and pass: these may not seem like anything other than simple functions, but they are very important when it comes to the process of digestion, as well as, the environment. This is because all of these actions relate to the subject of gas production. Reactions in which gasses are formed take place in many aspects of the natural world. Whether it is within the atmosphere or within the body. A gas that is a perfect example for both of these situations is CO2. It is of the Gram positive species and the Lactobacillus genus (Hammes, n.d.). It can be located in large amounts in the small intestine, where it assists in the fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates and the production of lactic acid (Williams, n.d.). Another microbial bacteria that produces lactic acid is Bifidobacterium longum. This bacteria is of the Bifidobacterium genus and the Gram positive species (Dority, 2017). It is most densely found in the large intestine. Without regulation of these bacteria, problems can arise, such as difficulty properly digesting dairy (Williams, n.d.). This is why it is common to be prescribed probiotic supplements after taking antibiotics, which can kill off this helpful bacteria (Health and Science Pipeline Initiative, n.d.). Technology developments made us able to fasten our daily activities, to reach people in every part of the globe and communicate rapidly, everywhere and instantly. Although this is advantageous in terms of time and convenience, it could be not the best choice in terms of human communication. In fact, according to recent researches, human communication works in a complicate way and involves more than a mere exchange of information. The lack of direct contact can undermine an effective communication and cause misunderstandings. All these aspects that constitute communication, of course, cannot be perceived by the addressee of a simple Email. This makes more clear why we communicate more effectively in face to face conversations. There are also neurological reason that affect our perceptions when we communicate in person: during in person communication the thoughts and feelings of the communicator resound in the brain of the receiver, neurological responses are sharp and the message is understood in a more rounded and detailed way. In a sense, in face to face communication occurs a sort of synchronization between the communicator`s and the receiver`s minds. Empathy is another key factor that plays a great rule in this regard. Some believe that becoming a man is just referring to a coming of age, and it somewhat is, however there is more. In the short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man by Richard white, Dave, the main character is a young boy trying to become a man and is searching for the key. However, there are certain ways to do things in society, and there are ways to not, and both of these ways have their benefits and consequences. In this short story Dave sees the gun as a symbol of manhood, and it will set him free of his childhood. Throughout the short story the reader can tell that Dave is eager to leave his childhood ... It seems as if Dave s thoughts are blurred and all he sees is the key to becoming a man is having a gun and using it so he is doing this as much as he can along with his crave for power, even though it is just causing others to have even less respect for a reckless irresponsible child with a gun. However, Dave s wishes were still granted when he is forced to start maturing into being a man more rapidly than others and having to take responsibility for his actions. Every choice has its benefits and its consequences, unluckily, with Dave s choices the consequences greatly outweighed the benefits that were being received. Dave had the wrong idea and believed that a gun could symbolize becoming a man whenever all it actually did is rush him into something that he is not ready for, and cause him to do wrong in the eyes of his family and the society. Back to the question, What does it mean for someone to become a man? One could say that Dave eventually learned his lesson by the end of the short story that you cannot push respect upon yourself by others with force. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly religious society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine shooting was a tragic event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors committing the crime killed themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified public to blame the incident on the media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and the Columbine shootings are similar in people standing up for incoherent children and deaths for selfish reasons, they are also very different. Children in high school were killed in the Columbine shooting while adults were killed in The Crucible and the who was targeted. A scapegoat, by definition is, A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency (Oxford dictionary). The Crucible is easily one of the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town was completely prepared to blame witches for the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed Marilyn Manson, a man known for his outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students murdered 12 teachers and students in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed suicide before incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public standing up for incoherent children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these stories. People were killed because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these kids were calling out. The two criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts. Dylan Klebold, one of the two seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit suicide. They had gotten arrested previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that year trying to convince everyone they were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as well. • 17. Chili Con Carne Research Paper Chili con carne or Texas Red chili has been declared the official state dish of Texas. Texans are well known for their strong opposition to chili made with beans. While some regional varieties of chili include and even focus on beans, Texas chili is made from stewed meat and chili peppers, giving the dish its Spanish name, chili con carne (literally: chili peppers with meat). Chili con carne is said to have been created by immigrants from the Canary Islands as far back as 1723. They incorporated the native peppers, onions, garlic, and spices like oregano to create a dish similar to one from their homeland, where a similar chili pepper grew. The dish evolved when cattle drivers began to add fresh meat they hunted along the way, which was anything ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Changing Health Care Policy Changes Running head: CHANGES IN HEALTH POLICY Changes in Health Policy Terri Obey Kaplan University Unit 6 August 12, 2015 Abstract When contemplating health care policy changes, several economic issues in health care must be considered. These include the financial issues affecting the health sector and have an impact on health policies. Policy makers face unending challenges due to the health sector revenues that are always rising. Another challenge is decreased funding and failure of the health insurance services. Cost One of the issues is the increasing cost of healthcare which is dominating the health policy in U.S. this is accompanied by an increase in spending on healthcare. According to projections by the government, the spending on medical care will continue to rise. U.S spends more money on health care than any other nation globally (Holtz, 2013). The increase in the spending is as a result of improved tools for disease diagnosis, better surgical interventions among others. This raises an issue for the policy makers on the maximum GDP percentage that a country has to spend on healthcare, and whether the nation will afford the cost that is continually growing. In contemplating any change in the health policy, policy makers should consider the cost of the healthcare and the ability of the nation to support that high cost. Funding Decrease in funding is another economic challenge in health care. The amount of finances coming from various sources not just the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Earthstock is a week long, campus wide event that is used to educate students, alumni, and the general public about sustainable practices that help the environment. During the final Earthstock celebration, exhibitors from many different organizations, such as EmPower Solar and Vegan Outreach, set up tables displaying information regarding healthy lifestyle practices, alternative diets, and sustainable forms of energy. For this event, I was unfortunately assigned the task of helping other student volunteers and exhibitors check in and set up their tables. However, after volunteering, I was able to observe and learn about many of the organizations that had attended the event. One of the most notable parts of Earthstock for me was the reciting of the Green Pledge. Just by reciting the pledge, I realized that there were many other ways to promote environmental sustainability other than just recycling. For example, by registering to vote you are helping the environment because it gives you a say in environmental policy decisions. I learned about groups such as Pride Patrol, and I learned about the impacts that certain events, such as Recyclemania, have on our campus and the environment as a whole. Another notable moment for me was learning about the benefits of a vegan diet from the Vegan Outreach organization. Businesses vary, and as a result, the skills needed to own and run them vary also. With that, there are some general traits that successful business leader should have. 1. Optimism: You must be an optimist because, at some point, you have to see beyond the hard times to see the better times. Optimism and confidence tend to go together. You, as the business owner, must be able to make it through the tough times because you have hope on getting better. 2. Successful businesses look to outsiders like there are rarely any problems. What they don t see is a business owner that is keeping his/her finger on the pulse of the business and the industry. When they anticipate changes coming, they take steps to prepare their business in case it comes about. That preparation and willingness to change can make the difference between success and failure. Done well and it s just about invisible to anyone except the business owner. 6. Be Organized: Being organized is a major problem to most of the business leaders. In case you can not handle various things at the same time, then you shouldn t go into business for yourself. There is NEVER just one thing going on when you own business. There are customer problems; there are vendor/supplier problems, and there are competition problems. You have to be able to prioritize your problems and know that those same priorities may change on a moments notice. 7. The second, final frame story scene follows the end of the original plot, upon which the viewer is returned to the bench within the asylum where Francis concludes his story. Francis and his companion return to the asylum proper, where other lunatics are observed in their antics, with Cesare and Jane among them. They write, we should be wary of those who accommodate Scripture to current scientific theory, because he who marries the spirit of the age will be a widower in the next. This is important to keep in mind, regardless of the issue, or your position on it. Young earth creationists commonly advocate that the sin of Adam brought about animal death, and prior to the Fall there was no death whatsoever (with the possible exclusion of insect or plant death). Much of this position is based on God s proclamation that the creation He had made was very good. They then use this to support the idea of a young earth. Ross and Archer explain why this fails: Many Christians seem to forget that Adam and Eve were not the first creatures to sin. According to Scripture, Satan committed the first sin. Domestic violence has many names. Spouse abuse talks about abuse from a husband/wife or a boyfriend/girlfriend. Domestic violence is not just physical, but is behavior that is intended to control another person through the use of verbal assaults. One big cause of domestic violence is stress. Things such as being unemployed, drugs, alcohol, or little money can cause a person a lot of stress. Also, it can sometimes be due to the abuser being abused themselves in their childhood. Statistics show that many people who are abused in their childhood become abusers themselves. When domestic violence occurs there are many types of abuse that can happen. The first kind is physical violence. Physical violence includes anything that is intended to physically injure the person. The second type of abuse is emotional abuse which is consistently doing or saying things to emotionally harm another person. The third kind is sexual abuse. Just because someone is married to someone doesn t mean that they have to have sex with them. Even though these are different kinds of abuse, all of them are harming in their own ways. Overview of DBMSs and the development of data models 1.1 Overview of DBMSs A DBMS contains four parts, the data model, the data definition language (DDL), the data manipulation language (DML), and the data dictionary. To begin with, the data model describes how data are logically constructed. Next, programmers use DDL to specify the types of information and structure of the database, which is the important connection between the logical (how to perceive data) and physical views (how data are stored and processed) of the database. Thirdly, DML is used to manipulate the data, where end users or programmers are allowed to extract data in order to satisfy information requests and develop applications. Manipulative verbs are included in DML, such as modify, delete or select . In addition, the data dictionary is used for the storage of data elements and data characteristics, including ownership, physical representation, authorization, and security (technology guide). • 36. Solvolysis Of T-Butyl Brromide Lab Report Solvolysis of t Butyl Bromide: The Effect of Solvent Polarity on Reaction Rates Katherine Lee Georgetown University Introduction The solvolysis of t butyl bromide is an SN1 reaction, or a first order nucleophilic substitution reaction. An SN1 reaction involves a nucleophilic attack on an electrophilic substrate. The reaction is SN1 because there is steric obstruction on the electrophile, bromine is a good leaving group due to its large size and low electronegativity, a stable tertiary carbocation is formed, and a weak nucleophile is formed. Since a strong acid, HBr, is formed as a byproduct of this reaction, SN1 dominates over E1. The first step in an SN1 reaction is the formation of a highly reactive carbocation, in which a leaving group is ejected. The ionization to form a carbocation is the rate limiting step of an SN1 reaction, as it is highly endothermic and has a large activation energy. The subsequent nucleophilic attack by solvent and deprotonation is fast and does not contribute to the rate law for the reaction. The Hammond Postulate predicts that the transition state for any process is most similar to the higher energy species, and is more affected by changes to the free energy of the higher energy species. Thus, the reaction rate for the solvolysis of t butyl bromide is unimolecular and entirely dependent on the initial concentration of t butyl bromide. Mechanism 1. Science I Term Paper The research paper that this term paper is based on is Interactions Among Plant Transcription Factors Regulating Expression of Stress responsive Genes, Sony Malhotra and R. Sowdhamini, National Center for Biological Sciences, June 2014, Bioinformatics and Biology Insights. Abstract: Plants are known to respond to abiotic stress by up or down regulating their genes. This is done by activating transcription factors. It is known that these transcription factors, though they have DNA binding domains, interact amongst each other for the regulation of gene production. In order to find out which transcription factors interact and how, the research uses genetic and molecular structure information available in databases and computationally analyses the data. The factors that lead to the conclusion of interaction between transcription factors includes spatial proximity and possible interaction poses. Molecular docking is used to predict the interaction poses and DockScore is a scoring system used to rank the interaction poses. Introduction: Plants are immobile and therefore need mechanisms to counteract stresses that they face from their environment. Cold, high light, drought, salinity, abscisic acid, rehydration and combination of stresses like cold drought salt stress are common abiotic stresses that plants encounter. Second Great Awakening Research Paper Introduction The First Great Awakening was a religious revival that was associated with Jonathan Edwards an American evangelical preacher and Methodist evangelist George Whitfield. The revivals renewed interest in the Christian faith. During the revivals, it was believed that people experienced conversions, salvation, regeneration or spiritual rebirth. It was a time of restructuring and re evaluating political social and religions ideas. The movement sparked the American Revolution with was fueled by the growing religious alienation between the Revivalist and the established religion of England. According to Alister E. McGrath, The dominant theme was the desire to break free from the oppressive and exploitative influence of England . Gusto L. Gonzalez noted that, The Great Awakening was the first movement to unite the thirteen colonies, which would become the United States . Moreover, the independence of the thirteen colonies and the wealth created by the industrial revolution inspired new religious, political and social ideas. Finding Dory In Disney Pixar Beloved talk show host Ellen DeGeneres would be reprising her role as the charming yet forgetful fish Dory in Disney Pixar s Finding Dory animated film, and if there s one thing DeGeneres wants fans to learn when watching the long awaited sequel to Finding Nemo, then it would have to be the importance of ocean preservation and valuing the creatures that live in it. This was what DeGeneres discussed when talking to Yahoo! Movies during the D23 Exposition event held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. I think that fish should be in the ocean. It s what this whole sequel is about: It s about rehabilitation and putting them back in the ocean ... And we have to protect our oceans. Hopefully that discussion starts with ... In the sequel, the story will focus on Dory and her family as the forgetful fish struggles to find her roots. Dory is searching for her parents she realizes she has parents and comes across some characters who are somewhat helpful, DeGeneres shared. Some of these characters include Bailey the beluga whale, to be voiced by Modern Family star Ty Burrell, an angry octopus named Hank voiced by another Modern Family star Ed O Neill. Then there is a kind hearted whale shark named Destiny, who is the adopted sister of Dory, and she will be voiced by It s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actress Kaitlin Olson. Meanwhile, Nemo and his dad Marlin, voiced by Albert Brooks will also return in the sequel, and other stars who will lend their voices in the animated film include Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, and Idris Elba. • 40. Short-Term Synthesis Within the hippocampus, long term potentiation (LTP) results due to the increased activity between a presynaptic and a postsynaptic neuron. The stimulation and subsequent depolarisation of a presynaptic CA3 pyramidal neuron results in the opening of voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC). Thus, an influx in Ca2+ occurs, and glutamate vesicles are fused via synaptotagmin. The fusing of these vesicles allows the release of glutamate, a neurotransmitter which will bind to AMPA receptors and induce the influx of Na+ into the postsynaptic CA1 pyramidal neuron. This will result in the depolarisation of the postsynaptic neuron, which is one of the requirements for the opening and consequent induction of Ca2+ through the NMDA receptor. Through a cascade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The test groups that wrote out the content 10x showed a significant increase in short term memory versus test groups that utilised no writing. These results indicate that repetition increases neural activity and thereby increases the levels of short term synaptic plasticity (STP). The effects of STP can last between a few millisecond to minutes, whilst long term synaptic plasticity can last from minutes to years (Pinar et al., 2017). The short term memory results are therefore not a strong indicator of the strength of LTP occurring. In order to analyse this, long term memory was measured three weeks later. The test group that viewed a relatable movie before writing out the content 10x, displayed a significantly higher long term memory recall, and therefore showed an increase in LTP. Students within the other groups showed lower levels of LTP which may have being caused by the LTD. LTD is the opposing mechanism of LTP, resulting in a decreased synaptic strength and therefore eliminating the formation of the memory. It occurs when Ca2+ flows through a voltage gated calcium channels within the postsynaptic neuron, resulting in an alternative Ca2+ encoding. This different encoding activates a protein phosphatase which induces a protein cascade that will dephosphorylate and remove APMA receptors from the neural membrane. This deregulation of AMPA receptors weakens the neural synapse and thereby results in the elimination of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Great Famine Of Irish Nationalism French political leader Charles de Gaulle said that nationalism is when hate for people other than your own comes first, by this definition turning points in Irish Nationalism can be seen not as what changed as in regards love for Ireland, but what changed hatred for the English withinin Ireland. There are numerous significant turning points in Irish Nationalism; it could be argued that The Great Famine is the largest turning point in Irish Nationalism as it encouraged independence through means of violence as well as cementing a deep rooted hatred of the English in Ireland. Equally, the failure of the First Home Rule Bill can be maintained as the largest turning point as it led to the decline of the liberals, Charles Stuart Parnell and constitutional nationalism. Alternatively, The First World War can be judged as the prime turning point, mainly due to its short term affects. It split the nationalists, which led to the Easter rising, and increased agitation over Home Rule. It could be argued that The Great Famine was the utmost turning point in Irish Nationalism due to the lack of action of the British Government, which left deep rooted hatred for the English within Ireland. Government expenditure for the famine equaled a total of £8 million, 3% of the total government budget. The British Government stuck closer to a laissez faire economic policy, which is echoed through Charles Trevelyan who claimed that through relief people grow worse instead of better. The Irish ... • 42. The Tale Of Othello By William Shakespeare The tale of Othello written by William Shakespeare is about several things; love, heroism, military, isolation and sadness. The contrasts of characters within in this play are almost as remarkable as the themes presented and evoked. Within this piece each character is balanced by another of similar or contrasting characteristics. Desdemona is balanced by her opposite, Iago. Her love and concern for others is at one end of the spectrum versus his hatred and concern for self at the other end. All of the characters present a range and variety as striking and different as that produced by the opposite. Othello and Iago are two opposites that balance each other s personality and action throughout this piece. Their distinguishing qualities stand out to the mind s eye therefore when we are not thinking of their actions or characterstics, the idea of them is still as present as ever. Prior to the opening scene it can be assumed that Othello and Iago had a great relationship. There is evidence throughout the play that prior to this point there had be confidence between the two men and they were both looked at as men of excellent ability and character. Othello was known as a noble Moor obtaining the highest military position. People also saw Iago as an upright and noble man as he earned the nickname honest Iago. However as portrayed in the first scene and throughout the remainder of the play, honest Iago becomes the mortal enemy of the noble Othello. We can tell that the play is ... • 44. Vivendi Vs Gameloft Case Study 4.2 Vivendi vs Gameloft 4.2.1 Overview Vivendi is known for aggressively acquiring companies through financial pressure for some time now, as observed with Havas (Vivendi, 2017), Dailymotion (Lunden, 2015) and buying CanalPlus s joint owner s stakes (Keslassy, 2013). So as the trend goes, Vivendi wanted to return to the video game industry and chose the largest mobile games developer, Gameloft, acquiring it through a hostile takeover in 2016. The structure of the takeover as well as what caused it are detailed in further sections. 4.2.2 The Process In the October of 2015, Vivendi bought 6% shares in Gameloft and immediately within a week increased it 10%, causing a small panic in Gameloft s upper management, issuing a public declaration from Gameloft as well as its sister company Ubisoft, saying that Vivendi s involvement was quite unwelcome (Morris, 2016) (cited in Nutt, 2016). On February 2016, Vivendi again upped its share to 30%, forcing them to make a formal bid for ownership of Gameloft according to the French Mergers and Acquisitions Law (Kerr, 2016), detailed description of the law can be found in Appendix C. Although, proposition of the offer was mandatory for Vivendi, Gameloft had no such reservations about accepting and it was made clear with their statement, The offer launched by Vivendi has no strategic interest for Gameloft (cited from Nutt, 2016). After the initial rejection, Vivendi proposed to purchase all of Gameloft s share for a rate of €6 per share as opposed to the market price of €4, this was a fifty percent premium profit for all of Gameloft s shareholders, but as bargaining goes the shareholders upped the offer to a rate of €8/share which was double the stock price (Keslassy, 2016), ultimately leading Vivendi to reject the Michel Guillemot s plea and acquiring Gameloft under its banner. 4.2.3 Causes of the Takeover Moving on, to dissecting the acquisition, there are a few circumstances which were not directly in Gameloft s yet were directly responsible for Vivendi s hostile takeover of Gameloft. They are detailed below as follows: Not So Big Fish In A Small Pond. Gameloft was a leading mobile developer with massive yearly revenues, but this was only restricted to the video games ... Essay about Matching Dell MATCHING DELL CASE ANALYSIS This analysis describes the case of computer and peripherals industry especially the successful management of Dell Computer Corporation which grew twice as fast as its major rivals like Compaq, Gateway, Hewlett Packard and IBM. The main reason for the success of Dell was their Direct Model of selling computers which eliminated all traditional channels like distributors, resellers and retailers. Traditionally all its competitors like IBM, HP, and Compaq etc. used reseller, retailers and distributors to sell their computers to end users. IBM was the first company to launch its PC in 1981 and soon held 42% of the market. But the growth of IBM proved to be short ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another important aspect of the logistics strategy adopted by Dell was that suppliers were encouraged to locate warehouses and production facilities close to its assembly operations to ensure smooth flow of materials across the value chain. This ensured that its value chain was capable enough to handle the largest of orders in smallest possible time frame. Through this value chain the company was able to introduce a wide range of products. All the above stated resources and capabilities decreased operating costs with enhanced customer service and thus helped maintain substantial profit margins through relatively low inventory and capital expenditures in comparison to the revenues. Thus if we talk in terms of the strategy triangle we can say that Dell had the resources and capabilities such as highly integrated sales forces, efficient supplier relations, a able leadership in Michael Dell, cross functional excellence and outstanding corporate culture, which eventually led the company to achieve its core strategy of direct distribution and selling and hence maintain a relatively high growth rate. I would also like to mention that to improve its systems and processes, Dell hired management experience from other companies like Motorola, Apple computer and Intel who focused especially on operations and manufacturing and thus focused on return on invested ... The History Of The Universe From The Big Bang Religions and cultures have their own versions of the origin stories, which are general anecdotes or narratives in order to explain the existence and mysteries of the universe and the human beings. And big history is also an origin story, attempting to examine the history of the Universe from the Big Bang, explain the present and predict the future of the universe as well as the human beings. One of the most important theme found in the Big history is the idea of increasing complexity and the term of Goldilocks conditions , Christian suggests that the universe creates complexity when these conditions require a favorable environment, which is neither too hot nor too cold, thus providing just the required environment necessary for complexity to take place. These conditions found in the dissimilar thresholds including the creation of the universe and the formation of the stars, the early human life and the modern epoch. The creation of the universe and the formation of the stars To understand the history of the Universe, it is inevitable to conduct a thorough analysis that involves a survey of the origin of the universe. As complex creatures, we are driven by a desire to understand how the universe advances in complexity (Grinin, 2013). Understanding the universe also requires an understanding why complexity results in vulnerability and fragility.
