Estimation of the infiltration/natural recharge to groundwater from rainfall is an important issue in hydrology, particularly in arid regions. This paper proposes the application of The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) mass balance model to develop infiltration (F)–rainfall (P) relationship from flash flood events. Moreover, the NRCS method is compared with the rational and the Ф-index methods to investigate the discrepancies between these methods. The methods have been applied to five gauged basins and their 19 sub-basins (representative basins with detailed measurements) in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia with 161 storms recorded in 4 years. The F–P relationships developed in this study based on NRCS method are: F = 39% P with R2 = 0.932 for the initial abstraction factor, λ = 0.2. However, F = 77% P with R2 = 0.986 for λ = 0.01. The model at λ = 0.01 is the best to fit the data, therefore, it is recommended to use the formula at λ = 0.01. The results show that the NRCS model is appropriate for the estimation of the F–P relationships in arid regions when compared with the rational and the Ф index methods. The latter overestimates the infiltration because they do not take λ into account. There is no significant difference between F–P relationships at different time scales. This helps the prediction of infiltration rates for aquifer recharge at ungauged basins from monthly and annual rainfall data with a single formula.

The aim of this study is to determine homogenous region in the Tensift basin within which the hydrological behavior is similar. In order to do this we used two methods: The Principal components analysis on the monthly precipitation registered at the 23 rainfall stations. This resulted in setting apart 4 groups of stations. The second method is analysis of land use map, geological map, pedagogical map, vegetation map and slope map of the studied area. This method allowed us to delineate 4 homogenous areas. The two methods yielded complementary results and the superposition of groups and regions obtained allowed us to retain 4 homogenous regions corresponding to 3 groups of stations.

ABSTRACT:- In arid regions, extreme rainfall event frequency predictions are still a challenging problem, because of the rain gauge stations scarcity and the record length limitation, which are usually short to insure reliable quantile estimates. Regional frequency analysis is one of the popular approaches used to compensate the data limitation. In this paper, regional frequency analysis of maximum daily rainfall is investigated for Madinah province in the Western Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The observed maximum daily rainfall records of 20 rainfall stations are selected from 1968 to 2015. The rainfall data is evaluated using four tests, namely, Discordance test (Di), Homogeneity test (H), Goodness of fit test (Zdist) and L-moment ratios diagram (LMRD). The Di of L-moments shows that all the sites belong to one group (Di <3.0).><1). Finally, the Zdist is used to evaluate five probability distribution functions (PDFs) including generalized logistic (GLO), generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized normal (GNO), generalized Pareto (GPA), and Pearson Type III (PE3). Zdist and LMRD both showed that PE3 distribution is the best among the other PDFs. The regional parameters of the candidate PDF are computed using L-moments approach and accordingly the regional dimensionless growth curve is developed. The results enhance the accuracy of extreme rainfall prediction at-sites and also they can be used for ungauged catchment in the region.

ICLR conducted a Friday Forum webinar on June 18, 2021 titled 'Floodplain mapping over Canada: Investigating performance at inundation level and understanding dynamics of population flood exposure', led by Dr. Slobodan Simonovic, Director of Engineering Studies, ICLR/Professor Emeritus, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Western University.
Surface runoff estimates from atmospheric re-analysis datasets are increasingly preferred by hydrologists for modelling floods in regions where traditional observations are not sufficiently available. This presentation explores the fidelity of four widely used re-analyses runoff products as hydraulic forcings to a flood inundation model in describing inundation dynamics over Canada. The re-analysis obtained runoff is used with the Catchment-based Macroscale Floodplain (CaMa-Flood) global hydrodynamic model, to derive high-resolution floodplain maps for 100 and 200-yr return periods. The floodplain maps derived from each reanalysis dataset are compared with the regional developed or ‘benchmark floodplain maps’ over six selected flood-prone basins (test basins) in Canada through a set of performance statistics. Using the superior reanalysis runoff dataset, a few historic flood events over the test basins are simulated and subsequently compared with MODIS satellite-derived floodplain information. We notice that more than 75% of the inundation is precisely captured for these events.
The second part of the presentation will focus on the use of four global population datasets (together with census data from Statistics Canada as the reference), their performances and skill in flood exposure assessment across Canada. The flood exposure is quantified based on a set of floodplain maps for Canada derived from the CaMa-Flood global flood model. To obtain further insights at the regional level, the methodology is implemented over six flood-prone River Basins in Canada. We find that about 9% (3.31 million) and 11% (3.90 million) of the Canadian population resides within 1 in 100-yr and 1 in 200-yr floodplains.
This work (i) strongly supports the need for careful selection of a re-analysis dataset while performing inundation modelling for large regions: and (ii) also highlights the need for careful selection of population datasets for preventing further amplification of uncertainties in flood risk. The results derived from this study may be useful for flood risk management and contribute to understanding other disaster impacts on human-environment interrelationships.

Precipitation within a river basin varies spatially and temporally and hence, is the most relevant input for
hydrologic modelling. Various interpolation methods exist to distribute rainfall spatially within a basin.
The sparse distribution of raingauge stations within a river basin and the differences in interpolation
methods can potentially impact the streamflow simulated using a hydrologic model. The present study
focuses on assessing the effect of spatial interpolation of rainfall using Theissen polygon, Inverse distance
weighted (IDW) method and Ordinary Kriging on the streamflow simulated using a physically based
spatially distributed model-SHETRAN in Vamanapuram river basin in Southern Kerala, India. The
SHETRAN model in the present study utilises rainfall data from the available rain gauge stations within the
basin and potential evapo-transpiration calculated using Penman-Monteith method, along with other input
parameters like soil and landuse. Four years of rainfall and evapo-transpiration data on a daily scale is
used for model calibration and one year data for validation. The performance of the different spatial
interpolation methods were assessed based on the Mean Annual flow and statistical parameters like NashSutcliffe
Efficiency, coefficient of determination. The ordinary kriging and IDW methods were found to be
satisfactory in the spatial interpolation of rainfall.

This paper describes the application of a spatially distributed hydrological model WetSpa (Water and Energy Transfer between Soil, Plants and Atmosphere) using radar-based rainfall data provide by the United States Hydrology Laboratory of NOAA's National Weather Service for a distributed model intercomparison project. The model is applied to the
river basin above Tahlequah hydrometry station with 30-m spatial resolution and one hour time--step for a total simulation period of 6 years. Rainfall inputs are derived from radar. The distributed model parameters are based on an extensive database of watershed characteristics available for the region, including digital maps of DEM, soil type, and land use. The model is calibrated and validated on part of the river flow records. The simulated hydrograph shows a good correspondence with observation (Nash efficiency coeffiecient >80%, indicating that the model is able to simulate the relevant hydrologic processes in the basin accurately.

ABSTRACT: This study uses different interpolation techniques to predict rainfall intensity at locationsthat are not directly located near a rainfall gauges. The goal of being able to interpolate the rainfall intensity is to study its impact on traffic crashes. To perform the study, a collection of rainfall gauges in Alabama were used as subject locations where rainfall intensity was predicted from surrounding gauges, while also providing validation data to compare the predictions. Essentially, the actual rainfall intensities at existing gauges were interpolated using nearby gauges and the results were analyzed.The interpolation techniques used in the study included proximal, averaging and a distance weighted average. The results of the study indicated that none of the interpolation methodologies were sufficient to accurately predict the rainfall intensity values any significant distance from the actual gauges.

This research presents a two-dimensional flood inundation modelling in urbanized areas when some features such as roads, buildings, and fences have great effect on flood propagation. Wadi Qows located in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia was chosen as case study area because of the flood occurrence of 2009 causing lots of losses either economic or loss of life. The WMS and HEC-RAS program were used for a hydraulic simulation based on channel geometry built by incorporating urban features into DEM using GIS effectively. A resampling method of DEM 90 × 90 m become 10 × 10 m grid cell sizes was conducted to produce a higher resolution DEM suitable for urban flood inundation modelling. The results show that a higher resolution leads to increasing the average flood depth and decreasing the flood extent. Although the change of the grid cell sizes does not affect its elevation values, this approach is helpful to perform flood simulations in urban areas when high resolution DEM availability is limited. In addition, the integration of WMS, HEC-RAS and GIS are powerful tools for flood modelling in rural, mountainous and urban areas.

Risk indices and risk matrix have been used among governmental agencies for assessing risks and ranking alternatives protection measures. The popularity of risk matrices can be associated with its characteristics to quick assessing risk and providing inexpensive solutions. The risk assessment is associated with flood protection as: economic, environmental, and life-safety. Economic risks are reasonably well dealt with by the well-known traditional cost-benefit analysis, insurance, and financial markets. Environmental risks are difficult to assess by traditional methods in flood project evaluation. Environmental consequences cannot be directly measured, while social risks represent the most challenge to quantify. It may be possible to estimate the number of fatalities, and cost of damaged infrastructures, while the social aspects cannot be measured. This paper is proposing a flood risk matrix technique for assessing risks in urban arid and extreme arid regions demonstrated through case-study application on the catchment of Taibah University (TU) and Islamic University (IU) in Medina, KSA. The study focused on assessing the geographical impacts of the flash flood inundated depths for different frequencies from 5 to 100 years return periods leading to identification of the flood channels, and its floodplains that may be vulnerable to different degrees of flood hazards.

Abstract:
Most studies on unit hydrograph theory is developed for temperate regions and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no studies on this topic in arid regions because of the lack of runoff measurements. This paper presents the derivation of a unit hydrograph of a Allith basin and its S-curve in the south western part of Saudi Arabia to be used to predict flash flood more accurately in this region. The derivation is based on the method of stream flow data that has been collected from measured rainfall and runoff storms in the region. The study resulted in the unit hydrograph of 1 hr duration and the S-curve that is used to transfer the hydrograph to any other durations. This unit hydrograph can be used to predict flash floods in Allith basin and similar watersheds.

Transmission losses is caused by infiltration into the streambed in ephemeral streams. The conventional methods for flood routing in wadis is impossible to achieve due to transmission losses. The Muskingum routing procedure in its basic form has two parameters, the channel time lag, Km, and the weighting parameter, x. However, both parameters do not consider transmission losses of floods in channels. O’Donnell 1985 introduced a third parameter, α, in the continuity equation to allow for the lateral movement of floodwater. Elfeki et. Al (2014) carry some modifications of the assumptions such that the negative sign of the parameter α represents transmission losses. In this research, the third-parameter α has been investigated as a tool for estimation of transmission losses using data from Yiba catchment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A spreadsheet model will be developed to deduce the equations.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

5. Problem Statement
It is very well-known that arid and semi-arid regions are lacking hydrological
measurements worldwide since the rare occurrence of rainfall events.
Moreover, there is always a limitation on the validity of rainfall-runoff models
in these regions.
In Saudi Arabia, a few research studies were undertaken for studying transmission
losses and infiltration rates from rainfall.
Therefore, any attempt to analyze the available data based on field
measurements in these regions will help the hydrological studies in the arid
region in general and the hydrological studies in SA in particular.

The current study proposes two mass balance
approaches namely: the NRCS and the rational
methods to estimate the infiltration–rainfall
relationship.

The NRCS mass balance model is appropriate for the
estimation of the infiltration-rainfall relationship at
catchment scale in arid regions when compared with
the rational method balance model or the Ф-index
method
Appropriate results of NRCS
The infiltration-rainfall relationships developed in this
study are: F = 39% P with R2 = 0.932 for λ =0.2,
whereas, F = 77% P with R2 = 0.986 for λ =0.01. The
NRCS mass balance model at λ = 0.01 exhibits a better
fit to the data when compared with λ = 0.2.

The main issue with the rational mass balance
model and Ф-index method that they do not take
the initial abstraction into account and therefore
they overestimate the infiltration rates.

There is no significant difference between infiltration-
rainfall relationships at different time scales. This helps
the prediction of infiltration rates for aquifer recharge at
ungauged basins from monthly and annual rainfall data
with one formula
