2. Size of aircraft.
3. MinimumTurning Radius.
4. Minimum Circling Radius.
5. Speed ofAircraft.
6. Capacity of Aircraft.
7. AircraftWeight & Wheel Configuration.
8. Jet Blast.
9. Fuel Spillage.
10. Noise.
Types Of Propulsion
The size of aircraft, circling radius,
noise nuisance, speed, weight carrying
capacity etc., depend upon the
Type of Propulsion of an aircraft
The performance characteristics of
aircraft determines the basic
runway length also depends on this
 Size of Aircraft
It involves:
1. Wing Span.
2. Fuselage length.
3. Height.
4. Gear Tread.
5. Wheel Base.
6. Tail Width.
MinimumTurning Radius
• In order to turn an aircraft in loading aprons &
hangars the study of geometry of the turning
moment of aircraft is required.
 Minimum Circling Radius
The minimum radius with
which the aircraft can turn
in space.
 Speed of Aircraft
It is defined in two ways viz., Cruising speed (or) Ground speed and Air speed
•Air speed is speed of aircraft relative to the wind
• Cruising speed is the speed of aircraft w.r.t ground when the aircraft is flying in air at
maximum speed.
 Aircraft Capacity
The number Of passengers, baggage's, cargo & fuel that can be accommodated in
aircrafts depends upon the capacity of aircraft.This in-turn has an effect in designing
the runway systems & terminal facilities.
Weight Of Aircraft & Wheel Configuration
Weight of aircraft directly influences the length of runway & structural requirements.
It determines many other aspects like:-
•Passenger baggage
•Cargo
•Fuel
•Structural Weight etc.,
 Jet Blast
• At high velocities the aircraft exhausts high gasses.
It can be as high as 300kmph.
• Blast fences (or) deflectors are
used to divert the smoke ejected by
engine.
•CementConcrete pavement is provided on
bituminous layer of pavement to resist the blast.
 Fuel Spillage
At aprons & hangars, it is difficult to avoid
spillage, but the spillage can be reduced.
The bituminous pavement is seriously
affected by the fuel spillage.
 Noise
Noise generated by aircrafts creates
problem for peoples.
It also creates problem in making
decisions on layout & capacity.

Aircraft Characteristics

  • 2. The Characteristics are as follows:- 1. Types of Propulsion. 2. Size of aircraft. 3. MinimumTurning Radius. 4. Minimum Circling Radius. 5. Speed ofAircraft. 6. Capacity of Aircraft. 7. AircraftWeight & Wheel Configuration. 8. Jet Blast. 9. Fuel Spillage. 10. Noise.
  • 3. Types Of Propulsion The size of aircraft, circling radius, noise nuisance, speed, weight carrying capacity etc., depend upon the Type of Propulsion of an aircraft The performance characteristics of aircraft determines the basic runway length also depends on this
  • 4.  Size of Aircraft It involves: 1. Wing Span. 2. Fuselage length. 3. Height. 4. Gear Tread. 5. Wheel Base. 6. Tail Width.
  • 5. MinimumTurning Radius • In order to turn an aircraft in loading aprons & hangars the study of geometry of the turning moment of aircraft is required.
  • 6.  Minimum Circling Radius The minimum radius with which the aircraft can turn in space.
  • 7.  Speed of Aircraft It is defined in two ways viz., Cruising speed (or) Ground speed and Air speed •Air speed is speed of aircraft relative to the wind • Cruising speed is the speed of aircraft w.r.t ground when the aircraft is flying in air at maximum speed.
  • 8.  Aircraft Capacity The number Of passengers, baggage's, cargo & fuel that can be accommodated in aircrafts depends upon the capacity of aircraft.This in-turn has an effect in designing the runway systems & terminal facilities.
  • 9. Weight Of Aircraft & Wheel Configuration Weight of aircraft directly influences the length of runway & structural requirements. It determines many other aspects like:- •Passenger baggage •Cargo •Fuel •Structural Weight etc.,
  • 10.  Jet Blast • At high velocities the aircraft exhausts high gasses. It can be as high as 300kmph. • Blast fences (or) deflectors are used to divert the smoke ejected by engine. •CementConcrete pavement is provided on bituminous layer of pavement to resist the blast.
  • 11.  Fuel Spillage At aprons & hangars, it is difficult to avoid spillage, but the spillage can be reduced. The bituminous pavement is seriously affected by the fuel spillage.
  • 12.  Noise Noise generated by aircrafts creates problem for peoples. It also creates problem in making decisions on layout & capacity.
