Slides for a First Year introduction to aesthetics focusing on the problems of Donald Judd's dictum. The slides relate to my chapter entitled "Art Worlds" in Exploring Visual Culture: Definitions, Concepts, Contexts, edited by Matthew Rampley. Published University of Edinburgh Press, 2005
This article, written by Anindya Kundu, Visual Designer at Kuliza, was published in issue 08 of the Social Technology Quarterly.
Summary: When analysing the importance of functionality and aesthetics in design, we notice that it is the context that determines which of the two takes a dominant role in a
particular instance. But in the larger picture both need to complement and balance each other.

Use of ergonomics risk assessment tools on construction sitevivatechijri
Construction industry is one of the 7th industry with high risk exposure. The prevalent problem with construction industry in recent years is the health of construction workers. In residential construction sites workers daily activities includes Material handling, prolonged standing, bending, etc. this leads to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s). Some techniques are required to identify and control WRMSDs. Ergonomics involves the interaction between human, technology and organization in the purpose of optimizing well-being, health and performance. The aim of research is performing ergonomics risk assessment based on which ergonomics risk factors in building construction site is obtained and to give an overview of ergonomic risks at workplace by some of the observational methods that can be used for assessment. Through ergonomics risk assessment tools such as checklist (questionnaire), REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) and QEC (Quick Exposure Check) data is collected. Risk rank order for activities are determined by RII (Relative Importance Index). Comparison of tool QEC and REBA is done and analysis is done in SPSS. The result showed that most workers are at higher and medium risk on residential construction site. Based on the analysis and findings task need to redesigned and reassessed so that it can be safely carried out. In an appendix we have included a brief presentation of these methods together with the work sheet (if available) and the reference source of the observational method.

Engineering design
Engineering design is the process where by one devises a system, module, or
process to meet desired requirements. Engineering design involves the use of basic science
and mathematics and engineering sciences among others for the new things. Engineering
design has great importance in the history of industry. For good engineering design to occur
there need to be understanding between the client and the designer. There is the designer
user triangle which consists of clients, the user of designed device and the designer. This
triangle helps us to know that the three participants might differ in their interests and these
results in monetary problems when the client demands are not accomplished.
There are different devices which have been made in the past and are very important
for they are used up to date. There are detailed and conceptual forms of designs. The
devices like airplane have been made to ferry goods and humans in air and wheelchairs for
carrying the disabled among other devices. There are vital vocabularies which need to be
defined in engineering design. The terminologies are; design, Engineering design, form,
function, means, objective and constraints which makes the understanding of engineering
design better understood. There are various assumptions which have been made in the
definition of engineering design, with form and function mostly being used.
The designer has some questioning process which derives certain benchmarks
during engineering design. The questioning process has the; clients objectives, metrics to
be used, the function of what will be designed and establishing the requirements of what’s
needed. Engineering designs faces some challenges which are ill regulated and open ended.
In the real sense, for one to have the best design he or she needs to learn it better. Exercise
and paying close attention is the main driving force which makes designers makes
perfection in their work. In early days, for engineering design to occur when had to think
of it and how it should be done.
In conclusion, during the evolution of the engineering design, one had to make the
drawings first of what he or she needed to make, one could have blue prints or flow chart
as it was the case in Kansas City. Designs for manufacturing and concurrent engineering
are very important in the engineering designing. For excellent designs to be made, one
needs to be excellent in their management.
Product design
For businesses to remain active and having market, it needs to design new products every
time to attract and maintain customers. There are some companies which have been involved in
the product designing of various things. The likes of companies like; The Ford Motor Company,
the Raychem Corporation, the Microsoft Corporation and the Xerox corporation among others.
During the product design, there are some of the product development task which needs to ...

Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
Traditionally, dealing with real-time data pipelines has involved significant overhead, even for straightforward tasks like data transformation or masking. However, in this talk, we’ll venture into the dynamic realm of WebAssembly (WASM) and discover how it can revolutionize the creation of stateless streaming pipelines within a Kafka (Redpanda) broker. These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
Water billing management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Our project entitled “Water Billing Management System” aims is to generate Water bill with all the charges and penalty. Manual system that is employed is extremely laborious and quite inadequate. It only makes the process more difficult and hard.
The aim of our project is to develop a system that is meant to partially computerize the work performed in the Water Board like generating monthly Water bill, record of consuming unit of water, store record of the customer and previous unpaid record.
We used HTML/PHP as front end and MYSQL as back end for developing our project. HTML is primarily a visual design environment. We can create a android application by designing the form and that make up the user interface. Adding android application code to the form and the objects such as buttons and text boxes on them and adding any required support code in additional modular.

Online aptitude test management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
The purpose of on-line aptitude test system is to take online test in an efficient manner and no time wasting for checking the paper. The main objective of on-line aptitude test system is to efficiently evaluate the candidate thoroughly through a fully automated system that not only saves lot of time but also gives fast results. For students they give papers according to their convenience and time and there is no need of using extra thing like paper, pen etc. This can be used in educational institutions as well as in corporate world. Can be used anywhere any time as it is a web based application (user Location doesn’t matter). No restriction that examiner has to be present when the candidate takes the test.
Every time when lecturers/professors need to conduct examinations they have to sit down think about the questions and then create a whole new set of questions for each and every exam. In some cases the professor may want to give an open book online exam that is the student can take the exam any time anywhere, but the student might have to answer the questions in a limited time period. The professor may want to change the sequence of questions for every student. The problem that a student has is whenever a date for the exam is declared the student has to take it and there is no way he can take it at some other time. This project will create an interface for the examiner to create and store questions in a repository. It will also create an interface for the student to take examinations at his convenience and the questions and/or exams may be timed. Thereby creating an application which can be used by examiners and examinee’s simultaneously.
Examination System is very useful for Teachers/Professors. As in the teaching profession, you are responsible for writing question papers. In the conventional method, you write the question paper on paper, keep question papers separate from answers and all this information you have to keep in a locker to avoid unauthorized access. Using the Examination System you can create a question paper and everything will be written to a single exam file in encrypted format. You can set the General and Administrator password to avoid unauthorized access to your question paper. Every time you start the examination, the program shuffles all the questions and selects them randomly from the database, which reduces the chances of memorizing the questions.

1. Aesthetic Considerations in Design
Each product has a definite purpose. It has to perform specific functions to the satisfaction
of customer. The contact between the product and the people arises due to the sheer necessity of
this functional requirement.
However, when there are number of products in the market, having the same qualities of
efficiency, durability and cost, the customer is attracted towards the most appealing product. The
external appearance is an important feature.
The growing realization of the need of aesthetic consideration has given rise to a separate
discipline, known as ‘industrial design’. The job of the industrial designer is to create new forms and
shape, which are aesthetically pleasing. The industrial designer has, therefore, become the fashion
maker in hardware.
Selection of the proper colour is an important consideration in product aesthetics. The
choice of colour should be compatible with the conventional ideas of the operator. The external
appearance of the product is a cumulative effect of number of factors such as rigidity and resilience,
tolerances and surface finish, motion of individual components, materials, manufacturing methods
and noise.
Ergonomic Considerations in Design
Ergonomics is defined as the relationship between man and machine and the application of
anatomical, physiological and psychological principles to solve the problems arising from man-
machine relationship. The word ‘ergonomics’ is coined from two Greek words – ‘ergon’, which
means ‘work’ and ‘nomos’, which means ‘natural laws’. Ergonomics means natural laws of work.
From design considerations, the topics of ergonomic studies are as follows:
1. Anatomical factors in design of driver’s seat.
2. Layout of instrumental dials and display panels for accurate perception by the operators.
3. Design of hand levers and hand wheels.
4. Energy expenditure in hand and foot operations.
5. Lighting, noise and climatic conditions in machine environment.
The aim of ergonomics is to reduce the operational difficulties present in man-machine joint
system and thereby, reduce the resulting physical and mental stress.
