Question 2
By Harley Golder
How effective is the
combination of your
main product and
ancillary texts?
Introduction
In order for all 3 of my media texts to be recognised by the audience as the same film and genre, meant a lot of research
in the pre-production stage, after looking at several posters and magazine front covers from a real film, it was clear that
all three had synergy and a continuous style throughout. I feel that my media texts all interlink/connect very well in all if
not all aspects, as clearly stated by the following slides
; having the same filter on the magazine front cover, the poster and even during the film when the character is walking
away from the same location as the main image was taken for the poster and front cover. This results in a link being
made and a style which can be easily recognisable. Another positive is also to do with the way in which all my media texts
were linked, for instance; by having a
Font
Font plays a huge part in ensuring that my
media texts are easily recognisable to the film. I
feel that the way in which i used the fonts in all
three media texts were very similar… However
one difficulty that i came across was the font
that i used on my film poster and magazine
front cover was unavailable to use in Final Cut
Pro meaning that i had to change the font, but i
did leave the colour scheme of the red and blue
visible! Evidence of the above is shown!

Colour Scheme
As i talked about in the other slide i feel the colour scheme has
followed suit in all productions font wise. However i also feel that
the colour scheme played a big part in all three due to the main
image on my poster and front cover because i decided to use the
same image and effects on them both meaning that it ensured
that the audience can easily identify the film and genre just by
looking at the images. But i also aimed to try and replicate the
images filter (blue) and the affects (the static feel) resulting in a
chnage of filter ¾ of the way through my trailer whereby the
character is having a flashback and i chose to change the filter to
show this and more importantly create the link to the poster and
magazine front cover. Also by having the same location at which
the poster and front cover images were captured it allows another
connection to be made! Evidence shown:

Mise En Scene Including Costume
I personally do not feel that much of this category was used as i did not feel it was needed, but some mise en scene was
used for instance; Characters clothing- i feel this was key to show the characters “way of life” of being a football hooligan
by using brands that are associated with hooliganism it allowed my target audience to notice the brands and make the
link to hooliganism. In all 3 media texts at one point the main character is seen to be wearing the same outfit once again
this helps to make a link between all the texts. A iphone was used as a prop as it helped to show that it is set in the
modern 21st century showing that football hooliganism is alive and well and not set back in the 80’s. Another prop that
was used was a binbag although the shot is very short it helps to show that a character is coming out of prison and
leaves a sense of mystery of who that character is. Although most of these props have no link between the media texts
some are and can be related in real media texts such as the mirror used in my production is due to the fact that
AwayDays also used a mirror to show the characters sense of style. Location is very key, by using locations that are
normally used in this genre it enables the link to be made. For example the location that the poster and front cover was
taken is at a train station and in the trailer a train is passing clearly indicating that it is a way of transport for most
hooligans. Evidence will follow on the next slide:
Mise En Scene Including Costume-Evidence

Character
In order to relate all 3 media texts i chose to use the same character in all 3 texts… I felt this would create a very strong
link with the film and the help to identify who is the main character. Comments on the characters clothing has been made
in the previous slides.
Social Media and Websites
I chose to include URL’s to the films social media pages and website, this was because i felt that it was necessary due to
the fact after doing lots of research on all 3 types of media text it was clear this was some of the content included.
However these were not consistent in all 3 types of media text, due to being forgetful to include such a small little thing i
have not included the websites url in my trailer credits which i am deeply disappointed in myself for however one thing
that was linked were the titles at the end of my trailer this informed the audience of the films release date, as shown
below and the reason why it was not included in my front cover is because it’s not a common convention in order for
them to be present.
Idents
My ident was present in both my poster and trailer this is due to the fact that it added another way in which my product
could be linked, the reason for it not to be included on my front cover was because it was not common for them to be
included on the front cover, this would have broke the convention and perhaps have caused a loss in popularity.
Genre
I personally believe that i have achieved my goal of making all 3 media texts represent my genre of Football Crime Drama.
This has been achieved in numerous ways for instance: The clothing used are made by iconic brands that are
recognisably linked with terrace wear. Another is the ambient sound (chanting) that is present throughout my trailer. Also
by having non-digetic amplified police sirens it allows attention to be drawn to the sound of danger and a chase. Danger
can be linked to all three of my products due to the clothing the character is wearing and the locations he is at. I feel that i
aimed to make the poster very minimalist and achieve the opposite with the magazine front cover by making it very
cluttered, this could be seen as a link as it’s the opposite. All of the above help reinforce the genre in the ways mentioned.
My media texts can be located on my evaluation website.
Tagline
My tagline is located on my poster for an obvious reason; due to doing lots of research of the content on all three media
texts it was clear that it was very unconventional for a tagline to be present on the front cover likewise with the date of
release. The same reasons apply with relation to the tagline and trailer.
Conclusion
Overall i feel that there has been many links between all three of my media texts, making the film very easily reciognised
due to the texts. I regret not having having included the Social media and website url in my trailer credits as this could
have caused a loss of potential viewers who may have watched the film. All other aspects were very stongly linked and
overall it has lead to very successful media texts that i am very happy with myself.

Mise En Scene Including Costume I personally do not feel that much of this category was used as i did not feel it was needed, but some mise en scene was used for instance; Characters clothing- i feel this was key to show the characters “way of life” of being a football hooligan by using brands that are associated with hooliganism it allowed my target audience to notice the brands and make the link to hooliganism. In all 3 media texts at one point the main character is seen to be wearing the same outfit once again this helps to make a link between all the texts. A iphone was used as a prop as it helped to show that it is set in the modern 21st century showing that football hooliganism is alive and well and not set back in the 80’s. Another prop that was used was a binbag although the shot is very short it helps to show that a character is coming out of prison and leaves a sense of mystery of who that character is. Although most of these props have no link between the media texts some are and can be related in real media texts such as the mirror used in my production is due to the fact that AwayDays also used a mirror to show the characters sense of style. Location is very key, by using locations that are normally used in this genre it enables the link to be made. For example the location that the poster and front cover was taken is at a train station and in the trailer a train is passing clearly indicating that it is a way of transport for most hooligans. Evidence will follow on the next slide:
  • 7. Mise En Scene Including Costume-Evidence Trailer: Real Text Poster: Front Cover:
  • 8. Character In order to relate all 3 media texts i chose to use the same character in all 3 texts… I felt this would create a very strong link with the film and the help to identify who is the main character. Comments on the characters clothing has been made in the previous slides.
  • 9. Social Media and Websites I chose to include URL’s to the films social media pages and website, this was because i felt that it was necessary due to the fact after doing lots of research on all 3 types of media text it was clear this was some of the content included. However these were not consistent in all 3 types of media text, due to being forgetful to include such a small little thing i have not included the websites url in my trailer credits which i am deeply disappointed in myself for however one thing that was linked were the titles at the end of my trailer this informed the audience of the films release date, as shown below and the reason why it was not included in my front cover is because it’s not a common convention in order for them to be present.
  • 10. Idents My ident was present in both my poster and trailer this is due to the fact that it added another way in which my product could be linked, the reason for it not to be included on my front cover was because it was not common for them to be included on the front cover, this would have broke the convention and perhaps have caused a loss in popularity.
  • 11. Genre I personally believe that i have achieved my goal of making all 3 media texts represent my genre of Football Crime Drama. This has been achieved in numerous ways for instance: The clothing used are made by iconic brands that are recognisably linked with terrace wear. Another is the ambient sound (chanting) that is present throughout my trailer. Also by having non-digetic amplified police sirens it allows attention to be drawn to the sound of danger and a chase. Danger can be linked to all three of my products due to the clothing the character is wearing and the locations he is at. I feel that i aimed to make the poster very minimalist and achieve the opposite with the magazine front cover by making it very cluttered, this could be seen as a link as it’s the opposite. All of the above help reinforce the genre in the ways mentioned. My media texts can be located on my evaluation website.
  • 12. Tagline My tagline is located on my poster for an obvious reason; due to doing lots of research of the content on all three media texts it was clear that it was very unconventional for a tagline to be present on the front cover likewise with the date of release. The same reasons apply with relation to the tagline and trailer.
  • 13. Conclusion Overall i feel that there has been many links between all three of my media texts, making the film very easily reciognised due to the texts. I regret not having having included the Social media and website url in my trailer credits as this could have caused a loss of potential viewers who may have watched the film. All other aspects were very stongly linked and overall it has lead to very successful media texts that i am very happy with myself.
