Question 2
1. Question 2. How effective is
the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
By Lewis Broughton

My A2 media studies coursework required me to make a film
trailer to go together with an ancillary task of making a film
poster and magazine cover for the film. I chose the action genre
with hybrid of romance and comedy, and so I put together the
unique selling point of my film into three different products. I
did this in order to make the film expand and attract and keep
the audience engaged and interested in the film. I designed
these to make the audience want to see more. I wanted there to
be anticipation for my film. This will increase the effectiveness
of the whole package. I will show how the combination of the
two products with the trailer are effective.

The purpose of a poster is to advertise the film through the title,
and the images portrayed. I used these elements to make the
poster attractive the human eye. As the actors in my film aren't
well know I decided that it wasn’t necessary for me to add their
names to the poster. Even if I added their names they aren't well
known and so it wouldn’t add to the sales. What was going to
sell the film for me was the images I used.

The main film title on my poster is clear and
stands out to the audience. It is easy to read and
the text is unique to my film. I have used the
same font in my magazine and in the trailer and
so this relates them as media products. The
yellow font represents the yellow lines on a road.
It also stands out form the black background.
Even though the film poster is simple, I believe its
quite effective because it attracts the audience
and is associated with the film trailer and
magazine cover. This is mainly done through the
font and the theme of cars. The main image on
this poster of a cars headlights stands out in the
poster as it is the central image and it’s the first
thing you see when you look at the poster. This
catches the eye of the audience, and it provides
synergy by being of the same theme of the image
on the magazine cover and featuring in the trailer.
I feel that my poster is very effective.

The dark bold magazine title going across the
magazine cover is black which stands out. The title
for my film uses the same font as the poster and
the trailer and this is at the middle of the
magazine. When researching magazine covers I
found that the title of the film is always in the
middle. The bold letters catch the attention of the
audience. I have also used advertisements at the
bottom of the magazine which is a convention for
magazines. I used a Spiderman advertisement to
fit in with my action film. The main image I used of
car tires relates to the car on the poster and also
relates to the whole of the trailer. Whilst the
image is subtle it is very effective on the magazine
and leaves the viewer wanting to no more about
the film. The image is the main focus on the page.
The words ‘The sequel to drive’ give the film an
immediate target audience as the audience of
drive would most probably want to see this film.
This gives my film a pre sold audience. I feel that
this magazine cover relates well in relationship to
the trailer and poster.

I feel that the synergy between the trailer, the magazine and the
poster are all very well done. I feel that all three mediums are
relatable to the theme of image and through the same font for
the film title. I feel that I have achieved this very well and I feel
that the film is instantly recognisable.
