Final Milestone Part 2
Final Milestone Part Two: Policy Research and More Sarah Harris Southern New Hampshire
University Economic Theories and Principles Every healthcare organization in our country relies on
financial and economic gains. In other words, without these two important factors, no healthcare
facility would ever survive. For example, healthcare facilities rely on supplies, staff and the proper
financial knowledge. In fact, the price and amount of healthcare supplies are rising, which in turn can
increase the cost of healthcare (Kabene et al.). Therefore, in non profits like Yale New Haven
Hospital, it is important to have an adequate balance of supplies in order to allow the healthcare
providers to practice efficiently. For instance, there needs to be enough supplies in order for the
doctors to keep up with the high demand of incoming patients. When there is a rise in the demand of
healthcare supplies such as shots, medication, vaccines etc., the more the market will produce,
allowing more money to be made. The healthcare markets will be producing financial gains and so
will the hospitals that are distributing these goods, which causes supply and demand to be at an all
time high. Either way, without the availability of healthcare staff and supplies, the financial well being
of any hospital would be non existent and so would the healthcare market and that is why there is a
strong relationship between the two. There are two main economic

Life In Hawaii
Life in paradise is fine; I like the ever present sun and strong sense of community. Yet for as long as I
can remember, I ve felt restless in Hawaii. I ve daydreamed of far away, fairytale kingdoms in
kindergarten and chased after passing airplanes during recess. I was beyond excited when I visited my
relatives in seventh grade, traveling nearly six thousand miles to their homes in China. Everything in
the foreign land fascinated me; my head twisting every which way to marvel at the sizzling street food
or the flash of red on a passing student s uniform. Everyone was buzzing with a frantic energy that
contrasted the laid back lifestyle of Hawaii and I loved the change of pace. I had to learn about a new

Racial Formation
The Racial Formations of the Model Minority and Assimilating Whites
We use the term racial formation to refer to the process by which social, economic and political forces
determine the content and importance of racial categories, and by which they are in turn shaped by
racial meanings. (Omi and Winant 14) Through observing certain events in the economy, politics, and
society, we can understand the unwanted ascribing of racial identities to the minorities that led to their
unfair treatment and discrimination. The underlying factors that led to this utilization of racial
formation were a scarcity of jobs, political policies to maintain power, and racial division through
class differences.
The Chinese migrants were a group of people who migrated to America roughly a year after the the
annexation of California. They were a people the leaders praised, would cultivate Californian land and
develop the railroads that would connect the Atlantic states to what the fathers envisioned as the great
emporium of commerce and trade. The turmoil on their native land was the biggest factor in their
emigration out of China.
They were initially referred to as guest up until there was a scarcity of jobs. Unfortunately for the
Chinese, the rapidly changing economic climate had molded their racial formation. Nativist began to
fight back against the Chinese once they realized that they working against these people for jobs.
America demanded disposable workers for their dangerous

Feed forward control is a reliable for rejecting fast and dynamic voltage disturbances in the phase grid.
Mainly in this scheme implemented in phase voltages of the Wyes connected configuration. Under this
unbalanced and distorted grid conditions, the online conversion of line to line values into the phase

appropriate modulator is needed. In this article the feed forward of grid line to line voltages is used in
phase voltages. The introduced feed forward method is implemented in Implicit Zero Sequence
Discontinuous Pulse Width Modulation (IZDPWM) technique that is compatible for grid connected
inverters. Regarding in the IZDPWM grid topologies distorted the harmonics of the grid voltages.
Hence, a sinusoidal current is injected to the grid. Moreover, the measuring grid line to line voltages

The King Of A Vast Empire
A Family s Nightmare in The King of a Vast Empire In Danielle Evans s collection of short stories
Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, the story The King of a Vast Empire talks about how
traumatic events affect a family s bond. The main trauma in this story is a car accident that haunts this
family. Liddie, Terrance, and their parents got in a car accident one night. The dad was driving the car
when he was going around a dark curve in the road and hit another car. The other car was stopped in
the middle on the road because there was a fallen lumber in the middle of the road that their dad was
trying to remove. The other car did not have their emergency lights on. When the dad hit the car, all of
the kids in the backseat was killed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The father s drinking and the mother s temper result from the emotional impact of the devastating
accident. The family eventually had to move to other city because they could not bear living their
anymore because of the car accident. Not only did the accident affect the mom and dad, it affected the
children. A traumatic event can have a serious impact of the children that were involved in the car
accident. It was not until a year after the car accident that Liddie started to talk again. The kids grew
closer together. The King of a Vast Empire perfectly captures what it s like to be a brother and sister
united by grief and misunderstanding (VanDerWerff). The siblings were united by the trauma of the
car accident and became better friends. They only paid attention to yell at them. Terrance would
confront Liddie when she would have nightmares from the car accident: Liddie brought her
nightmares to me; I did what I could to comfort her (Evans, The King of a Vast Empire. 128). Liddie
and Terrance grow closer to one another. When Liddie decided not to come home from Thanksgiving
when she was in college, Terrence s mom bought him a ticket and went to see her for the
Thanksgiving. When Liddie had a crazy idea or wanted to change her major, Terrance supported her
when her mom disapproved of the change of major. Even though the kids had a hard time after the
accident, they recovered and went on with their lives. The other family in the car lives where

Child Care For Single Mothers
Introduction In 2013, according to the U.S Census Bureau, approximately 46% of children in single
mother households were living in poverty and only 11% of children with married parents were living
in poverty (Luscombe, 2014). In 1997, the poverty rate among single mothers was 32.6% and for
those married couples in was only 5.6%, so as you can see the poverty rate among singe mothers has
increased over the years. Single mothers are the poorest and fastest growing family type in the United
States (London, 2000, p. 93). Recently, attitudes towards single mothers have changed dramatically,
and policymakers are being pressed to create reforms that will reduce welfare dependency (Kimmel,
1995, p. 271). Full time work is used as a mean to help poverty reduction among single mothers, but
then they face the challenges of child care costs, which is a significant employment barrier. (Kimmel,
1995, p. 271). On average, in 1995, child care costs were about sixty three dollars per week overall,
and about forty forty dollars per week if they were cared for by a relative, so for the typical single
mother, child care costs would range between 15% and 30% of the mothers earned income, depending
on the type of care and hourly wage (Kimmel, 1995, p. 271). Living in poverty with a single mother
can have an impact on the children in the household. Children from single mother households face the
highest risks of living in poverty and. As of 2009, 18.5% of white children, 25.7% of Hispanic

My Father Was A Surveyor For The Us Army Corp Of Engineers
My father was a surveyor for the US Army Corp of Engineers, so we traveled quite a bit before we
moved to Arizona when I was ten. I remained in Arizona through college, where I pursued my degree
in engineering. While I was in my third year I realized I did not want to be an engineer, but I did want
to finish and earn my degree. After college I decided I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement,
so I moved to California and became an Orange County Deputy Sheriff. I did this for almost 15 years
and this is also where I met my wife, Diane, of over 23 years. Diane also moved to California, from
Minnesota, for her job as a flight attendant. At the time she worked for Northwest Airlines, but that
later merged with Delta Airlines. After being married for a few years we had our first of two children.
Our son who is about to start his third year in college and our daughter who is about to start her first.
Neither Diane, nor I, have family in California and we thought it was important to be near family, so
our plan had always been to move to Minnesota before our children started elementary school. Since I
traveled so much at an early age I thought it was important to move before our children started
elementary school. My wife is part of a large family and my parents were the only ones still in
Arizona, so Minnesota seemed like the logical place for us to select. I loved being a police officer,
most of the time, and thought about continuing in that profession when

Summary Of In The Penal Colony
For this unit, I decided to read Kafka s In the Penal Colony. The author, Franz Kafka, was an early
20th century middle class Jew who lived in Prague and wrote mostly in German. The present short
story, published in 1919, refers to an unnamed penal colony somewhere in the tropics and focuses on
four characters: the commander of the camp, an invited foreign dignitary, a guard, and a victim. The
story revolves a twisted idea of justice, where the punishment does not fit the crime, and the
condemned does not know neither the charge nor the nature of his punishment. Indeed, justice seems
completely irrelevant to the commander who is only fascinated with the torturing as an art and
science; the apotheosis of the latter represented with the torturing machine that resembles a CNC
router that inscribes the accusation on the skin of the condemned who then dies slowly from bleeding.
The first thing that impressed me what the prescience of the author, who almost anticipated the misery
of the Nazi and Communist concentration camps. Certainly, penal camps existed prior to his writing,
and these might have served as a model; in Czarist Russia, for example, criminals and political
radicals were sent to labor camps in Siberia with famous exiles being Dostoyevsky and Lenin. Yet,
despite the harsh conditions of these places, the idea remained that the punishment had to fit the crime
and there was a personal interaction between camp administration and inmates. Kafka s foresight

Should Books Be Taught In Schools
Throughout the course of education, certain books are an informative resource to develop and learn
new knowledge in progressing the brain ability to understand fundamental issue. The United States
educational school boards and professors have the responsibility for protecting their student s mind
and cover the appropriate material for their students decision. However, does this responsibility cover
the extreme act of no dignity from challenging certain books in the school library or public library?
The repetition of censoring books in school has been widespread due to the explicit content of
inappropriateness. Oftentimes books are challenged without literally understand the content by
judging the author s covers. When a book consists of offensive or sexual material, then parents would
challenge the schools to prevent their children from reading them. Certain kinds of books are being
challenged, challenge or banned books infringed upon the student s freedom to read what they want in
school which leads to ignorance on controversial topics.
First, the decision in which books should be restricted from children depends on the level in maturity
is not acceptable to their children rights. As a person grows and matures throughout their youth, they
will understand the logic of the message to help grow their intelligence in reading ... Show more

under the age of 18 needs their parent supervision to watch hardcore movies. However, since children

Jewish Living In Colonial America
Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. (Brainy Quote, 2016).
The inspiring pome that graces the Statue of Liberty was written by a Jewish poet Emma Lazarus, a
decedent of the first Jews to arrive in the North American colonies in the 1650s. For centuries Jewish
people have lived in a great deal of places far from their ancestral home in the Middle East, always
searching for a home. Like a lot of religious minorities, Jews saw America as a special place where
they could be a part of creating something new and embraced the opportunity. Today there are around
6 million Jews living in the United States, but three centuries ago in colonial America there were only
around 300. The fate of these early American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is that they were divided, just like the people of the colonies at the time. Numerous Jews in Colonial
America struggled and gained rights that were unheard of in Europe. Jews had won the rights of
economic opportunity, to own land, to learn in secular schools and universities, and in some colonies
to vote and serve in legislative bodies. There was great fear of losing these rights they had achieved.
Numerous Jews saw the Revolution as an opportunity to gain even more rights under a new country.
Of the 2,500 Jews there a hundred that enlisted in the war and fought on the battlefields for
independence. Other Jewish families helped to finance the war. A good deal of American Jews were
merchants and did not like the treatment and taxation imposed on them by the Stamp

Sign Music Personal Statement
I have wanted to study abroad since I was young, and will have the opportunity to do so next year at
the University of Quebec. There, I will study French and hopefully a bit of music in hopes to pursue
my lifelong goal of learning. I believe with education and willingness the world is without borders!
Originally from the area, I graduated from Shepherd High School in Isabella County in 2012, and was
honored to have been the Maple Syrup Queen my graduation year. In high school was very involved
with the choir program, and loved singing. I had a little exposure to French, but at the time I was more
curious about American Sign Language (ASL). When I went to Central Michigan University I decided
to pursue my greatest passion, vocal music, with a minor ASL. I am currently in my senior year in

How Investment Banking Is A Highly Regulated And Complex...
Investment banking is a highly regulated and complex sector that can be broken down into three main
principle businesses comprising of the Investment Banking Division, Trading Division and Asset
Management. First of all, the investment banking division can be sub divided into two basic groups
called product group and client coverage group. The primary focus of these two groups are to perform
mergers and acquisitions transaction advisory and financing arrangement for clients. The two main
groups in the product group are the mergers and acquisitions group and the capital markets group. In
the mergers and acquisitions group, there are five main products which is the sell side assignment, buy
side assignment, merger of equals joint venture, public market separation and hostile defense. The sell
side transaction involves the sale, merger or disposition of an entire company or any of its divisions
and assets. The buy side transaction involves the purchase of an entire company or any of its divisions
and assets. The sell side transaction typically have the highest priority due to its higher probability of
completion compared to the buy side transactions. Merger of equals joint ventures is the merging of
two companies of roughly equal assets that have a comparable market value. This allows the two
companies to form a new and stronger entity to initiate economic activity together with their shared
assets. Public market separation requires reorganization such as trading

The Death Of Trotsky By David Ives
Violence has been a part of plays for centuries. It keeps the play interesting and intriguing, but
however, most of the time there is a greater purpose of violence. When looking for it in plays one
would automatically look for weapons or signs of physically harming someone like. However,
verbiage can be an act of violence as well. The phrase, sticks and stones may break my bones, but
words will never hurt me is false. Your tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to hurt another
person. Like in the play The Stronger by August Strindberg where Miss Y is verbally insulted
countless of times. Whereas in the play Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives one can see
the physical violence by the tragic murder that occurred. After distinguishing where the violence is
coming from one can then analyze the true role of the violence and compare how the violence affect
the dramas.
When looking at The Stronger you can see just how Miss Y in verbally insulted over and over again
by Mrs. X. While Miss Y is just sitting at a table by herself minding her own business when Mrs. X
shows up. During the entire play Miss Y does not say one word while Mrs. X insults her and says rude
things like, Poor Amelia, I pity you, nevertheless, because I knew you are unhappy, unhappy like one
who has been wounded, and angry because you are wounded. () She just assumes that she is unhappy
because she is in a café by herself on a holiday. She does not even ask her if she is unhappy or give

The Challenge For Property Qualifications For Voting
One basis of political democracy in this period was the challenge to property qualifications for voting.
It began in the American Revolution but culminated in the early nineteenth century. After the
Revolution, no new state required property ownership to vote, and in older states, constitutional
conventions in the 1820s and 1830s abolished property qualifications, partly because the growing
number of wage earners who did not own much property demanded the vote. In the South, however,
where large slave owners dominated politics and distrusted mass democracy, property requirements
were eliminated only gradually and disappeared quite late, by 1860. The personal independence
required of the citizen was henceforth located not in owning property but in owning one s self, a
reflection of this period s individualism.
The single exception to this democratizing trend was Rhode Island, which required voters to own
considerable real estate or rental property. The state was a center of factory production, and many
wage earners could not vote. In 1841, reformers met at a People s Convention and drafted a new state
constitution that gave the vote to all adult men and stripped it from blacks. When the convention
illegally ratified the constitution and inaugurated lawyer Thomas Dorr as governor, president John
Tyler dispatched federal troops to the state, and the movement collapsed.
By 1840, more than 90 percent of adult white men could vote. By then, America had a vibrant
democratic system

How Did The Light Bulb Impact Society
What do you think had the biggest impact on society? In my opinion I strongly believe that the light
bulb has had the greatest impact on society. Some people say that the light bulb does not last that long
for the price it costs yeah but, the light bulb was a long history of impact on society and it also affects
us today. Most importantly the light bulb makes society better in many ways. Like it uses less energy
here s an example in the average home light bulbs and small appliances use anywhere between 15 20
amps of electricity. That s not that much cause the dishwasher uses about 1400 amps that s insane and
lights are almost always on.
First of all the light bulb has a long history first it was created in 1879 that was 138 years ago! The ...

First of all city s started to buy light bulbs helped people see late at night so they can stay outside later
or they can see where they are going so they do not get lost and it helped people with work and just
being inside like it helped people see what they were doing inside so they did not eat raw meat and die
or like old food like bread or meat. That really helped them also the lightbulb helped people see when
they were working late like you couldn t goo and sell or buy groceries late at night because no one can
see anything inside the sun wasn t giving the light because it was the night time. Lightbulbs are also
used in cars like the headlights in you re car or you re parents cars and if lightbulbs were never
invented the cars would not have lights on the so they would only have to drive during the day in clear
weather like if there is really thick fog they wouldn t be able to drive because without the lights in the
car they could only drive in clear days like if there was no fog or it was really dark outside if it was
dark they would not see where they were going and then they could crash into something without the
lights on the front of their car. And also the lights on the back that show when they are reversing or
stooping cause the other cars might not know that you are backing up or stopping so they could keep
going and then they would run into the back of your car.
So that s why in my opinion I strongly believe that the lightbulb had the greatest impact on society.

Organizational Culture:
Business dictionary defines Organizational Culture as the values and behaviors that contribute to the
unique social and psychological environment of an organization . It can also be seen as the values that

Lincoln Electric:
Founded in 1865 by John C. Lincoln, the company is known in today s world for its high worker
productivity. The secret behind this extra ordinary success lies in the company s founding philosophies
and established policies over the year. The term Organizational Culture was not even in practice when
the company established its unique policies like reducing working hours, paid up life insurance, health

My First Surfboard Research Paper
How to choose my first surfboard? A common misconception, when you acquire your first board, you
choose a smaller than indicated, with the nose (tip) too much sharp board because we bought second
hand to someone who already knows surfing or because they are the more they resemble those worn
by the pros in surfing videos!!! This is a problem that greatly delay our learning in the surf, sport, and
in itself complicated, and that can make us desist at the first change. The problem with these boards do
not provide us with two essential aspect, you have to have a board when we are starting to surf, the
volume and width. A board with lots of volume and width give us two very important things: sculling
and stability, if we paddle with a board with insufficient volume for our weight and our level we will
be almost impossible to catch the wave, or we will take too late, hampering subsequent steps. here we
present the different types of surfboards that we can find: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pompei Essay
Are the remains in Pompeii and indication of how the Ancient Romans lived? The city of Pompeii has
been frozen in time since the early afternoon of 24th August 79CE. A gigantic time capsule,
illustrating the everyday life of ancient Romans, has captured the last moments of at least two
thousand people. Pompeii had remained mostly untouched up until 1594 when building an aqueduct,
upon uncovering the ashes that worked as a preservative, they found the ruins of a once great town.
Casts of people showed their dying moments, gold and precious household items littered the streets.
(Staff, 2010) From the ruins of the city, it is reasonable to assume that the rest of Roman society was
much the same as Pompeii was at the time of the eruption. (Whipps, 2007) The 24th August began just
as every other day for the citizens of Pompeii. However the warning of an earthquake sixteen years
earlier did not warn them of the incoming danger. Mount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pompeii s amphitheatre was built shortly after 80 BCE; this causes it to become the oldest known
example of its kind in the Roman world. Any event hosted in the amphitheatre was strongly publicised
and well attended. These attendee s were not just the citizens of Pompeii, but many of the spectators
were from the surrounding villages. (Western Australian Museum, n/d) It is recorded at in 59 CE, a
riot broke out between Pompeian fans and the citizens of the nearby town of Nuceria, and as a result,
the amphitheatre was closed for a decade. A gentler form of entertainment, with less gore, was that of
theatrical performances. Pompeii s theatre was old, built originally in the second century BCE in the
traditional Greek Style, this was later enlarged and modernised to look similar to the Roman theatre.

The Ideals And Goals Of Humanism During The Renaissance
The ideals and goals of humanism in the Renaissance period are apparent in different pieces of
literature. More importantly, the scholars acknowledge the contribution of Italy around the fourteenth
century to have flickered the developments that followed this period. The rebirth of knowledge that
began in Italy spread to the north with the greater renewal of the interests of classical antiquity, and
this is what is known in history as the Renaissance. The period was associated with greater discoveries
within the geographical and intellectual realms. The discoveries played a greater role in the western
civilization in different areas, including sciences, such as the contributions of Copernicus in the
cosmic view that it is the sun, and not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It activated the concept of an active life as opposed to the contemplated life. During the medieval
period, people were living in contemplation, but with the rebirth of knowledge, people were obligated
to take the active measure in making life worth living, while also taking care of other social beings.
The man in the renaissance perspective should promote the cultural life with positive and active
engagement with the public life. In doing so, human beings should seek and acquire significant
knowledge in different areas to make it great. The human person should check his or her moral,
military and political actions while undertaking the service to the state. While doing so, they should
take into consideration the individual achievements, personal aspiration and the breadth of knowledge.
In conclusion, it is inferential that the Renaissance period gave a greater measure of attention to
human growth with proper significance to human action. More importantly, the human person was to
take an active role in making everything worth it and not living in contemplation. In that dictum, the
emphasis was on human positive interaction to make sure that people live harmoniously not only with
one another but also for one another. Therefore, the ideals and goals of humanism in the renaissance
period sought to make the world a better place for the human

Creating Text Essay
Creating Text
The process of creating text without using technology appeared to be a simple task that would allow
the students to be a creator of his or her unique technology free masterpiece. I just had to come up
with a creative, natural way to write text instead of using modern technologies that society takes for
granted. How hard and restrictive could this assignment be? I soon found out everything would not go
exactly as planned. It took me two attempts and failures before I finally achieved some level of
success.
My first idea came to me while I was getting ready one morning. Why not use hair to create text! It is

I could use the juice form smashing up raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries to
create natural paint. I purchased all the berries but I still needed something to create my text on. I was
looking for a piece of fruit big enough to display my text when I discovered the honeydew melon. The
surface of the melon was hard and smooth which would operate as a perfect canvas for my fruit paint.
The only part of my creation that would not be completely natural would be the paintbrush, I would
have to use this tool since my finger or a stick wouldn t work. After I smashed up all the fruit, I used a
paintbrush and dabbed it into the juice then wrote what was supposed to be an A on the surface of the
honeydew melon. Once again, I reached another failure. The juice form the smashed up fruit barely
showed up on the melon, even though the melon was light in color, the juice wasn t thick and dark
enough to be legible. After two failures my motivation and enthusiasm was depleting. I was becoming
frustrated and annoyed with the assignment and all the ideas I had up until this point.
My third attempt turned out to be successful but was more restrictive than I thought it would be. After
racking my brain trying to develop creative ideas I realized I needed to focus on completing the
assignment, meeting the requirements, and keeping the already complicated task as simple as possible.

Disadvantages Of Americanization
Although America was able to gain much political power through its ever growing economy there
were many social costs during the process of growth and wealth creation, which are the negative and
undesirable effects of large US corporations (Galambos, 933). One disadvantage of the American
corporate system is the tendency towards monopolization within the market (Galambos, 933). This, in
turn, will create oligopolies within industries and thus there will be little chance or incentive for
competition (Galambos, 937 38). Little plurality of firms dominating the economy is problematic as
economic power is so closely tied to political power (Galambos, 937 38). Now, in an international
framework, as a nation, it is quite arguable why this would be ... Show more content on

The author describes the adaptation of European countries to this new American challenge of
increased efficiency to promote growth and profit within their economy (44). The incentive has been
to catch up with American prosperity by adopting certain features that characterize huge profit
generating corporate firms that are the ones responsible for the ever increasing growth of the US
economy (44). However, he highlights that in actual times, although the European corporate system
has successfully adopted parts of the American style corporate structure, it has hybridized them with
socialist values and features (44). European states have been selective in the process of doing so in
order for the system to work successfully within national preconditions and at the same time ensuring
it would not undermine the social welfare that characterizes European economies

Analysis Of Jean Ginsberg Sunflower Sutra
Poets in the 1950 s began writing about Asiatic poetics in an ancient style called a Sutra. This was
different than the poets incorporating Eastern philosophy of Zen Buddhism. Zen Buddhism can be
defined as the cohesive harmony of the mind and body through the practice of meditation and spiritual
connection to nature (Britannica). A Sutra can be defined as a teaching that is part of an ancient
religious tradition (Britannica). It is a Buddhist manuscript that teaches a moral. Allen Ginsberg and
Gary Snyder both incorporated both of these styles into their writings Sunflower Sutra and Smokey
the Bear Sutra respectfully. By analyzing these poetry styles of Ginsberg, and Snyder there are
different themes that reflect their historic and social consciousness. Zen Buddhism was an inspiration
for Ginsberg s Sunflower Sutra. Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey. He was
born the son of a poet and then he became a major poet during the Beat era. He wrote his poem
Sunflower Sutra during his inspirational period late 1955 to the end of 1956 (Charters 288). During
this period he spent time in a cottage in Berkley, California with his lover Peter Orlovsky. In this
cottage he wrote Sunflower Sutra which shows some of his themes in writing. Themes that show up in
this poem are the social normal, the natural world, Moloch, and religion (Gradesaver). The theme of a
social normal is something that all poets during the Beat era and the Romanticism period like to

A Research Project On Inuit Of Arctic Canada
Throughout the course of human history epidemic spurts of self destructive behaviour have posed both
pertinent philosophical and medical problems for societies all across the globe. Presently, in various
ethnic communities spread across the world, rates of suicide, substance abuse, and other detrimental
actions towards oneself display their highest rates among young people (CITE THIS). While much
research has been facilitated on the vast degree and distribution of self destructive behaviour, there
continues to remain a vast disparity in the academic literature that focuses on the underlying causes of
such action (CITE). My research will attempt to effectively contribute to this general lack of research

With specific regards to anthropology, many highly regarded scholars have done, and continue to do,
ethnographic work within Inuit communities. This research, generally ethnographic in nature, focuses
on a plethora of different anthropological issues and attempts to address the growing level of cultural
adversity the people of the Arctic currently face. Interestingly, even the renowned French
anthropologist Marcel Mauss has had a seemingly profound influence on anthropological research
among the Inuit, even though he never in fact visited the Canadian arctic himself during his lifetime
(Inuit Studies 2006).
Although social researchers have done a significant amount of work with the Inuit, a large amount of
said research with communities has in fact resulted in more harm than good (Thomas et el 2011, 165).
Due to this detrimental nature, many groups of both Inuit and First nations people alike have grown
increasingly sceptical of researchers who come to facilitate research within their respective societies.
To avoid such negative research impacts, many studies with Native American groups have adopted a
community based participatory research approach. Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
has been presented as an effective way to help alleviate the dichotomous divide between researchers
and communities (Golberg Freeman et al 2007, in Thomas et al 2011, 167). In addition to this, the
reality that in

the Problem or Question How does the consumption of caffeine affect the reaction time of the nervous
system? 2) Introduction Purpose of the experiment: To identify the whether or not caffeine increases
or decreases the reaction time of the nervous system. In our experiment, we have decided to use all the
cases which will test how fast a signal from our brain will be sent to our muscles in order to click the
mouse when we see an object or directions on the screen. We know that the commonly used drug,
caffeine, increases the heart rate, thus the increase in blood flow. The question in our experiment is,

When he consumed the 12 oz of coffee, his average reaction time decreased to 344+ 60 milliseconds.
It is quite apparent from the graphs that the average reaction time for every case for each test subject
decreased when absorbing caffeine into their system. Test subjects also consumed the right amount of
caffine, 160mg, which allowed the subject to shorten their reaction time, while the wrong dosage
could impair it. We can also draw from the graphs the relation that the younger the test subjects are,
the quicker their reaction time will be. Also, we can also conclude from the results that males tend to
have a quicker reaction time than females (Daniel s reaction times were faster than Jazmine s, and
Keon s were faster than Mi s). 8) State the conclusion The hypothesis was correct. The effects of
caffeine shortened the reaction time in all of our test subjects. 9) Summary Paragraph The reason why
we were able to correctly devise a hypothesis for the experiment was because of the prior knowledge
we had of the drug, caffeine. Caffeine increases the heart rate, which allows for faster muscle
contractions. Caffeine does not really affect the actual reaction of the nervous system, but rather the
actual contractions of the muscles themselves. This known fact of caffeine is reflected in the
experiment. It shortened the reaction time of our test subjects in every

Portugal And Brazil Essay
Both Brazil and Portugal share an intense bond with Africa. Portugal held African colonies since the
era of overseas exploration. The first violent occupation from the Portuguese took place in Ceuta in
1415, in the north of the African continent, however, the real discovery of the continent took place
little over the 15th century, expanding also to the Latin America (Brazil) and Asia (China and India).
In the 17th century, the British, French and Deutsch expelled the Portuguese from the best coastal
areas in order to pursue the slave trade. Portugal and Spain kept some of the old colonies like Angola,
Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe. Portugal sent Portuguese families

With the end of the war and the independence of these countries in 1975, the white Portuguese
colonizers, who had built their life in African territory, had to return. This exodus was called The

people returning from the African colonies, had not been in Portugal for many years or were second,
third generation, so the term Returned is not as well accepted for those who had never stepped foot in
Portuguese soil. However, what many people may not know, is that the first wave of the Returned
were in fact black Portuguese, who were looking for a new way of life, many of them who had never

Abstract
Centuries ago, ancient civilizations learned how to take plants that they found flourishing in nearby
areas and grow them conveniently for their own use. The advancement of technology, and the
evolution of farming practices has created a great variance from the simplistic idea of putting a seed in
the ground, adding some water, and hoping it will grow. Currently, a debate amongst the farming
community has caught the attention of people even living hundreds of miles from the nearest ... Show

By rotating crops, studies have shown that it can increase the yield, lower the cost of crop production,
and decrease the amount of additives needed to make a strong crop. Rotation has also been known to
benefit physical properties of the soil like tilts, and bulk density, and also contribute to efficient use of
plant nutrients found in soil.
The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide
micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic
bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive in
the soil. For centuries farmers have used green manure, but in recent times it has been replaced by the
use of herbicides and fertilizers. This practice has multiple benefits for the soil including soil tilth,
water infiltration, and reduction of sealing. It provides erosion control, adds to the fertility of
5
the soil, suppresses the growth of weeds, and encourages the growth of beneficial insects.
There are two main types of green manure, legumes and non legumes. Legumes benefit the soil by
adding much needed Nitrogen, it does this by fixing atmospheric Nitrogen into a form plants can use.
Non legumes recycle excess Nitrogen into Phosphorus and
Potassium, two other highly need nutrients for the success of crops. The use of a cover crop does
require a little planning

Susan Minot Summary
LUST.
Having read the story written by Susan Minot we come across a rather complicated character, to be
precise the narrator herself. The girl in the story has been studying in the boarding school. It is the
educational establishment of close type, so the process of growing proceeds differently. For example if
we compare the girls from public schools and the girls from boarding schools the latest will be more
dissolute. The main reason for this is the closed social environment which fluencies the young girls
minds. So let us look closer at the narrator she was ...good at such things like math or painting or even
sports, but the second a boy put his arm around her, she forgot about wanting to do anything else...
This phrase indicates the author s real attitude towards men and studying. She loved being in
relationships with young boys. Moreover, while being in the boarding school she had at least 5 or 6
partners. At the same time the narrator stresses that: Lots of boys, but never two at the same time. One
was plenty to keep you in a state. So for her a man is a tool, which can keep her in shape. To our way
of thinking it is a rather thoughtless attitude towards the relationship. Furthermore, from the
conversation with the headmistress Mrs. Gunther it becomes obvious that the narrator is astonished
having known that she has had only the one man for her life. But to be honest the headmistress has her
own understanding of the relations between the man and the woman, and it is

The Control Variables For Investment Derivatives Use
The control variables used in this thesis were selected based on previous literature.
Including the variables that previous researchers have shown to influence firm derivatives use will
improve the explanatory power of the model (Knopf et al., 2002).
3.4.1 Control variable for CDS model
Drawing upon the existing literature in derivatives use, CDS use is modeled as a function of CEOs
risk taking incentives generated by stock options compensation (vega) and the following control
variables: growth opportunities, financial distress (leverage), firm focus (diversification), managers
risk aversion, delta, bank size, and other derivatives.
Growth opportunities are considered by previous studies to affect derivatives use (Smith and Stulz, ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Smith and Stulz (1985), firms that face higher expected costs of financial distress have
larger incentives to use derivatives because derivatives can reduce the present value of bankruptcy and
the probability of financial distress. Firms can use derivatives to reduce the variance of a firm s cash
flow or earnings which enable firm to have sufficient cash flow to fulfill its fixed payment obligations
and reduce the probability of financial distress (Aretz and Bartram, 2010; Supanvanij and Strauss,
2010). Similarly to previous studies, I have used leverage as a proxy for financial distress (e.g.,
Tufano, 1996; Rogers, 2002; Aretz and Bartram, 2010). Leverage is measured with the ratio of total
debt to book value of assets (e.g., Coles et al; 2006).
I include diversification as a control variable for firm focus. Earlier empirical studies (e.g., Tufano,
1996; Géczy et al., 2007) suggest a negative relationship between the degree of diversification and
derivatives use. Firms can choose to reduce firm risk through changing the level of diversification
(Coles et al., 2006; Bartram et al., 2011). For all the banks in the sample, I collect information on the
degree of diversification which is measured by the number of geographical segments of the firm at the
end of each year (Géczy et al., 1997; Fung et al., 2012). The primary source of data on the number of
segments is Datastream

  • 2. Final Milestone Part 2 Final Milestone Part Two: Policy Research and More Sarah Harris Southern New Hampshire University Economic Theories and Principles Every healthcare organization in our country relies on financial and economic gains. In other words, without these two important factors, no healthcare facility would ever survive. For example, healthcare facilities rely on supplies, staff and the proper financial knowledge. In fact, the price and amount of healthcare supplies are rising, which in turn can increase the cost of healthcare (Kabene et al.). Therefore, in non profits like Yale New Haven Hospital, it is important to have an adequate balance of supplies in order to allow the healthcare providers to practice efficiently. For instance, there needs to be enough supplies in order for the doctors to keep up with the high demand of incoming patients. When there is a rise in the demand of healthcare supplies such as shots, medication, vaccines etc., the more the market will produce, allowing more money to be made. The healthcare markets will be producing financial gains and so will the hospitals that are distributing these goods, which causes supply and demand to be at an all time high. Either way, without the availability of healthcare staff and supplies, the financial well being of any hospital would be non existent and so would the healthcare market and that is why there is a strong relationship between the two. There are two main economic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I ve daydreamed of far away, fairytale kingdoms in kindergarten and chased after passing airplanes during recess. I was beyond excited when I visited my relatives in seventh grade, traveling nearly six thousand miles to their homes in China. Everything in the foreign land fascinated me; my head twisting every which way to marvel at the sizzling street food or the flash of red on a passing student s uniform. Everyone was buzzing with a frantic energy that contrasted the laid back lifestyle of Hawaii and I loved the change of pace. I had to learn about a new culture: how to hustle instead of simply ... • 4. Racial Formation The Racial Formations of the Model Minority and Assimilating Whites We use the term racial formation to refer to the process by which social, economic and political forces determine the content and importance of racial categories, and by which they are in turn shaped by racial meanings. (Omi and Winant 14) Through observing certain events in the economy, politics, and society, we can understand the unwanted ascribing of racial identities to the minorities that led to their unfair treatment and discrimination. The underlying factors that led to this utilization of racial formation were a scarcity of jobs, political policies to maintain power, and racial division through class differences. The Chinese migrants were a group of people who migrated to America roughly a year after the the annexation of California. They were a people the leaders praised, would cultivate Californian land and develop the railroads that would connect the Atlantic states to what the fathers envisioned as the great emporium of commerce and trade. The turmoil on their native land was the biggest factor in their emigration out of China. They were initially referred to as guest up until there was a scarcity of jobs. Unfortunately for the Chinese, the rapidly changing economic climate had molded their racial formation. Nativist began to fight back against the Chinese once they realized that they working against these people for jobs. America demanded disposable workers for their dangerous ... Abstract: Feed forward control is a reliable for rejecting fast and dynamic voltage disturbances in the phase grid. Mainly in this scheme implemented in phase voltages of the Wyes connected configuration. Under this unbalanced and distorted grid conditions, the online conversion of line to line values into the phase value is unworkable. In order to an exploit full advantages of feed forward controller is a most appropriate modulator is needed. In this article the feed forward of grid line to line voltages is used in phase voltages. The introduced feed forward method is implemented in Implicit Zero Sequence Discontinuous Pulse Width Modulation (IZDPWM) technique that is compatible for grid connected inverters. Regarding in the IZDPWM grid topologies distorted the harmonics of the grid voltages. Hence, a sinusoidal current is injected to the grid. Moreover, the measuring grid line to line voltages two sensors are required; hence an overall system costs is reduced and control system reliability is increased. • 6. The King Of A Vast Empire A Family s Nightmare in The King of a Vast Empire In Danielle Evans s collection of short stories Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, the story The King of a Vast Empire talks about how traumatic events affect a family s bond. The main trauma in this story is a car accident that haunts this family. Liddie, Terrance, and their parents got in a car accident one night. The dad was driving the car when he was going around a dark curve in the road and hit another car. The other car was stopped in the middle on the road because there was a fallen lumber in the middle of the road that their dad was trying to remove. The other car did not have their emergency lights on. When the dad hit the car, all of the kids in the backseat was killed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The father s drinking and the mother s temper result from the emotional impact of the devastating accident. The family eventually had to move to other city because they could not bear living their anymore because of the car accident. Not only did the accident affect the mom and dad, it affected the children. A traumatic event can have a serious impact of the children that were involved in the car accident. It was not until a year after the car accident that Liddie started to talk again. The kids grew closer together. The King of a Vast Empire perfectly captures what it s like to be a brother and sister united by grief and misunderstanding (VanDerWerff). The siblings were united by the trauma of the car accident and became better friends. They only paid attention to yell at them. Terrance would confront Liddie when she would have nightmares from the car accident: Liddie brought her nightmares to me; I did what I could to comfort her (Evans, The King of a Vast Empire. 128). Liddie and Terrance grow closer to one another. When Liddie decided not to come home from Thanksgiving when she was in college, Terrence s mom bought him a ticket and went to see her for the Thanksgiving. When Liddie had a crazy idea or wanted to change her major, Terrance supported her when her mom disapproved of the change of major. Even though the kids had a hard time after the accident, they recovered and went on with their lives. The other family in the car lives where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Child Care For Single Mothers Introduction In 2013, according to the U.S Census Bureau, approximately 46% of children in single mother households were living in poverty and only 11% of children with married parents were living in poverty (Luscombe, 2014). In 1997, the poverty rate among single mothers was 32.6% and for those married couples in was only 5.6%, so as you can see the poverty rate among singe mothers has increased over the years. Single mothers are the poorest and fastest growing family type in the United States (London, 2000, p. 93). Recently, attitudes towards single mothers have changed dramatically, and policymakers are being pressed to create reforms that will reduce welfare dependency (Kimmel, 1995, p. 271). Full time work is used as a mean to help poverty reduction among single mothers, but then they face the challenges of child care costs, which is a significant employment barrier. (Kimmel, 1995, p. 271). On average, in 1995, child care costs were about sixty three dollars per week overall, and about forty forty dollars per week if they were cared for by a relative, so for the typical single mother, child care costs would range between 15% and 30% of the mothers earned income, depending on the type of care and hourly wage (Kimmel, 1995, p. 271). Living in poverty with a single mother can have an impact on the children in the household. Children from single mother households face the highest risks of living in poverty and. • 8. My Father Was A Surveyor For The Us Army Corp Of Engineers My father was a surveyor for the US Army Corp of Engineers, so we traveled quite a bit before we moved to Arizona when I was ten. I remained in Arizona through college, where I pursued my degree in engineering. While I was in my third year I realized I did not want to be an engineer, but I did want to finish and earn my degree. After college I decided I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement, so I moved to California and became an Orange County Deputy Sheriff. I did this for almost 15 years and this is also where I met my wife, Diane, of over 23 years. Diane also moved to California, from Minnesota, for her job as a flight attendant. At the time she worked for Northwest Airlines, but that later merged with Delta Airlines. After being married for a few years we had our first of two children. Our son who is about to start his third year in college and our daughter who is about to start her first. Neither Diane, nor I, have family in California and we thought it was important to be near family, so our plan had always been to move to Minnesota before our children started elementary school. Since I traveled so much at an early age I thought it was important to move before our children started elementary school. My wife is part of a large family and my parents were the only ones still in Arizona, so Minnesota seemed like the logical place for us to select. • 9. Summary Of In The Penal Colony For this unit, I decided to read Kafka s In the Penal Colony. The author, Franz Kafka, was an early 20th century middle class Jew who lived in Prague and wrote mostly in German. The present short story, published in 1919, refers to an unnamed penal colony somewhere in the tropics and focuses on four characters: the commander of the camp, an invited foreign dignitary, a guard, and a victim. The story revolves a twisted idea of justice, where the punishment does not fit the crime, and the condemned does not know neither the charge nor the nature of his punishment. Indeed, justice seems completely irrelevant to the commander who is only fascinated with the torturing as an art and science; the apotheosis of the latter represented with the torturing machine that resembles a CNC router that inscribes the accusation on the skin of the condemned who then dies slowly from bleeding. The first thing that impressed me what the prescience of the author, who almost anticipated the misery of the Nazi and Communist concentration camps. Certainly, penal camps existed prior to his writing, and these might have served as a model; in Czarist Russia, for example, criminals and political radicals were sent to labor camps in Siberia with famous exiles being Dostoyevsky and Lenin. Yet, despite the harsh conditions of these places, the idea remained that the punishment had to fit the crime and there was a personal interaction between camp administration and inmates. • 10. Should Books Be Taught In Schools Throughout the course of education, certain books are an informative resource to develop and learn new knowledge in progressing the brain ability to understand fundamental issue. The United States educational school boards and professors have the responsibility for protecting their student s mind and cover the appropriate material for their students decision. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of no dignity from challenging certain books in the school library or public library? The repetition of censoring books in school has been widespread due to the explicit content of inappropriateness. Oftentimes books are challenged without literally understand the content by judging the author s covers. When a book consists of offensive or sexual material, then parents would challenge the schools to prevent their children from reading them. Certain kinds of books are being challenged, challenge or banned books infringed upon the student s freedom to read what they want in school which leads to ignorance on controversial topics. First, the decision in which books should be restricted from children depends on the level in maturity is not acceptable to their children rights. The inspiring pome that graces the Statue of Liberty was written by a Jewish poet Emma Lazarus, a decedent of the first Jews to arrive in the North American colonies in the 1650s. For centuries Jewish people have lived in a great deal of places far from their ancestral home in the Middle East, always searching for a home. Like a lot of religious minorities, Jews saw America as a special place where they could be a part of creating something new and embraced the opportunity. Today there are around 6 million Jews living in the United States, but three centuries ago in colonial America there were only around 300. The fate of these early American ... • 15. The Death Of Trotsky By David Ives Violence has been a part of plays for centuries. It keeps the play interesting and intriguing, but however, most of the time there is a greater purpose of violence. When looking for it in plays one would automatically look for weapons or signs of physically harming someone like. However, verbiage can be an act of violence as well. The phrase, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me is false. Your tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to hurt another person. Like in the play The Stronger by August Strindberg where Miss Y is verbally insulted countless of times. Whereas in the play Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives one can see the physical violence by the tragic murder that occurred. After distinguishing where the violence is coming from one can then analyze the true role of the violence and compare how the violence affect the dramas. When looking at The Stronger you can see just how Miss Y in verbally insulted over and over again by Mrs. X. While Miss Y is just sitting at a table by herself minding her own business when Mrs. X shows up. During the entire play Miss Y does not say one word while Mrs. X insults her and says rude things like, Poor Amelia, I pity you, nevertheless, because I knew you are unhappy, unhappy like one who has been wounded, and angry because you are wounded. • 16. The Challenge For Property Qualifications For Voting One basis of political democracy in this period was the challenge to property qualifications for voting. It began in the American Revolution but culminated in the early nineteenth century. After the Revolution, no new state required property ownership to vote, and in older states, constitutional conventions in the 1820s and 1830s abolished property qualifications, partly because the growing number of wage earners who did not own much property demanded the vote. In the South, however, where large slave owners dominated politics and distrusted mass democracy, property requirements were eliminated only gradually and disappeared quite late, by 1860. The personal independence required of the citizen was henceforth located not in owning property but in owning one s self, a reflection of this period s individualism. The single exception to this democratizing trend was Rhode Island, which required voters to own considerable real estate or rental property. The state was a center of factory production, and many wage earners could not vote. In 1841, reformers met at a People s Convention and drafted a new state constitution that gave the vote to all adult men and stripped it from blacks. When the convention illegally ratified the constitution and inaugurated lawyer Thomas Dorr as governor, president John Tyler dispatched federal troops to the state, and the movement collapsed. By 1840, more than 90 percent of adult white men could vote. By then, America had a vibrant democratic system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The effects of caffeine shortened the reaction time in all of our test subjects. 9) Summary Paragraph The reason why we were able to correctly devise a hypothesis for the experiment was because of the prior knowledge we had of the drug, caffeine. Caffeine increases the heart rate, which allows for faster muscle contractions. Caffeine does not really affect the actual reaction of the nervous system, but rather the actual contractions of the muscles themselves. This known fact of caffeine is reflected in the experiment. It shortened the reaction time of our test subjects in every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Portugal And Brazil Essay Both Brazil and Portugal share an intense bond with Africa. Portugal held African colonies since the era of overseas exploration. The first violent occupation from the Portuguese took place in Ceuta in 1415, in the north of the African continent, however, the real discovery of the continent took place little over the 15th century, expanding also to the Latin America (Brazil) and Asia (China and India). In the 17th century, the British, French and Deutsch expelled the Portuguese from the best coastal areas in order to pursue the slave trade. Portugal and Spain kept some of the old colonies like Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe. Portugal sent Portuguese families to stablish colonies in African soil, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the end of the war and the independence of these countries in 1975, the white Portuguese colonizers, who had built their life in African territory, had to return. This exodus was called The Returned although, this word was received with discontent, being a taboo to this day. Some of the people returning from the African colonies, had not been in Portugal for many years or were second, third generation, so the term Returned is not as well accepted for those who had never stepped foot in Portuguese soil. However, what many people may not know, is that the first wave of the Returned were in fact black Portuguese, who were looking for a new way of life, many of them who had never seen Portugal ... The advancement of technology, and the evolution of farming practices has created a great variance from the simplistic idea of putting a seed in the ground, adding some water, and hoping it will grow. Currently, a debate amongst the farming community has caught the attention of people even living hundreds of miles from the nearest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By rotating crops, studies have shown that it can increase the yield, lower the cost of crop production, and decrease the amount of additives needed to make a strong crop. Rotation has also been known to benefit physical properties of the soil like tilts, and bulk density, and also contribute to efficient use of plant nutrients found in soil. The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive in the soil. For centuries farmers have used green manure, but in recent times it has been replaced by the use of herbicides and fertilizers. This practice has multiple benefits for the soil including soil tilth, water infiltration, and reduction of sealing. It provides erosion control, adds to the fertility of 5 the soil, suppresses the growth of weeds, and encourages the growth of beneficial insects. There are two main types of green manure, legumes and non legumes. Legumes benefit the soil by adding much needed Nitrogen, it does this by fixing atmospheric Nitrogen into a form plants can use. Non legumes recycle excess Nitrogen into Phosphorus and Potassium, two other highly need nutrients for the success of crops. The use of a cover crop does require a little planning

  • 35. Susan Minot Summary LUST. Having read the story written by Susan Minot we come across a rather complicated character, to be precise the narrator herself. The girl in the story has been studying in the boarding school. It is the educational establishment of close type, so the process of growing proceeds differently. For example if we compare the girls from public schools and the girls from boarding schools the latest will be more dissolute. The main reason for this is the closed social environment which fluencies the young girls minds. So let us look closer at the narrator she was ...good at such things like math or painting or even sports, but the second a boy put his arm around her, she forgot about wanting to do anything else... This phrase indicates the author s real attitude towards men and studying. She loved being in relationships with young boys. Moreover, while being in the boarding school she had at least 5 or 6 partners. At the same time the narrator stresses that: Lots of boys, but never two at the same time. One was plenty to keep you in a state. So for her a man is a tool, which can keep her in shape. To our way of thinking it is a rather thoughtless attitude towards the relationship. Furthermore, from the conversation with the headmistress Mrs. Gunther it becomes obvious that the narrator is astonished having known that she has had only the one man for her life. But to be honest the headmistress has her own understanding of the relations between the man and the woman, and it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Control Variables For Investment Derivatives Use The control variables used in this thesis were selected based on previous literature. Including the variables that previous researchers have shown to influence firm derivatives use will improve the explanatory power of the model (Knopf et al., 2002). 3.4.1 Control variable for CDS model Drawing upon the existing literature in derivatives use, CDS use is modeled as a function of CEOs risk taking incentives generated by stock options compensation (vega) and the following control variables: growth opportunities, financial distress (leverage), firm focus (diversification), managers risk aversion, delta, bank size, and other derivatives. Growth opportunities are considered by previous studies to affect derivatives use (Smith and Stulz, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Smith and Stulz (1985), firms that face higher expected costs of financial distress have larger incentives to use derivatives because derivatives can reduce the present value of bankruptcy and the probability of financial distress. Firms can use derivatives to reduce the variance of a firm s cash flow or earnings which enable firm to have sufficient cash flow to fulfill its fixed payment obligations and reduce the probability of financial distress (Aretz and Bartram, 2010; Supanvanij and Strauss, 2010). Similarly to previous studies, I have used leverage as a proxy for financial distress (e.g., Tufano, 1996; Rogers, 2002; Aretz and Bartram, 2010). Leverage is measured with the ratio of total debt to book value of assets (e.g., Coles et al; 2006). I include diversification as a control variable for firm focus. Earlier empirical studies (e.g., Tufano, 1996; Géczy et al., 2007) suggest a negative relationship between the degree of diversification and derivatives use. Firms can choose to reduce firm risk through changing the level of diversification (Coles et al., 2006; Bartram et al., 2011). For all the banks in the sample, I collect information on the degree of diversification which is measured by the number of geographical segments of the firm at the end of each year (Géczy et al., 1997; Fung et al., 2012). The primary source of data on the number of segments is Datastream ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
