That Hideous Strength Analysis
When C.S. Lewis wrote That Hideous Strength , the characters Mark and Jane show their differences
when it came to values and morals. Even though culture can be educational, in today s society it has
effects when it comes to the learned behaviors. I will show comparisons and contrast when it comes to
my culture and the culture that is portrayed in the book. Cultural behaviors shape who we are and
what we stand for. In the text I gathered Jane to be restricted and resentful while Mark on the other
hand has many friends, but always seems to fall short when communicating with other fellows at
Bracton College.
I suppose there are two views about everything, said Mark. (Lewis, pg 70). When we discuss culture
and values each generation has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They never warned you. No one has ever told you that obedience humility is an erotic necessity. You
are putting equality just where it ought to be (Lewis, pg. ) Humility to me meant a desire to stay
humble. Equality means to be equal when a person wants to increase status, equal right opportunities.
For example, the criminal justice system is truly unfair and unjust, making race the number one
priority in most cases. The values that we portray are learned such as respect. Power and control seem
to rule social positions and how people relate to others. The perspective of education has now been the
American Dream. In today s world you have to work hard to obtain equality among different
diversities and most importantly gender.
These values that I possess are different from the characters in the book. I am honest, trustworthy,
open minded, empathetic and patient when it comes to dealing with other people. In the text the
characters seemed to be fearful, dishonest, judgmental, treating people like a means to an end and bias
in different interactions. When comparing my values of the characters in the text one thing was very
similar GOD. Religion in the text whether good or evil existed between St. Anne s and N.I.C.E.
organization. These types of values and behaviors occur

Essay On Assimilation In Canada
Within the international community Canada is regarded as an ethnically diverse country. Conversely
having many cultures under one roof does not represent multiculturalism. Over the 150 years Canada
has existed, there have been many instances of persecution against immigrant and First Nation
populations. Thomas King s Totem and Wayson Choy The Jade Peony unveil how their cultures fight
to hold onto their heritage. This heritage which they regard very highly is stripped away by the
government to force an inclusion into Canadian Society. Canada s ethnic groups are forced to separate
into isolated islands or else they are coerced into assimilation.
Ever since white settlers landed on Canadian shores in the 1600 s, there have been conflicts with the
First Nations. From driving them off their land to exterminating them with European diseases, the
First Nation population has been struggling to keep their lineage and history from being erased. With
the struggle to keep themselves from being cut [off] close to the floor (Page 2) the First Nation society
has been confined to a small patch of land called a reservation , a small downsize from all of Canada.
The forced isolation that their population has endured has meant that the chances of the First Nations

The idea of an individual immigrating to a new country and picking up its heritage is a facade that is
placed upon the immigrants of Canada. To fit in as a Canadian, the public needs to see one as a born
Canadian and this is troublesome to many people. Many immigrants and non Canadians can relate to
the family in The Jade Peony who s new lives in Canada has left their family torn and confused in a
strange land [where] everything [is] so very foreign and scientific (Page 3). Although this seems to
exacerbate what it s like living in Canada as a minority, it is a reality for people like the family in The

A Explanation Of The Problem Of Homelessness
Explanation of the Variables
Homelessness is a temporary problem that people fall into when they cannot afford to pay their rent or
mortgage, or when their home becomes unsafe or unstable. Other factors, such as job loss, health and
psychological disabilities can accelerate people s slide into poverty, and for some, eventual
homelessness. The lack of housing, access to healthcare, and supportive services, then act as others
barriers that keep individuals from moving into a home.
There are a variety of different factors that can affect someone and potentially cause them to become
impoverished. These factors include: substance abuse (drugs or alcohol), mental illness, domestic
violence, job loss, eviction, army, natural disaster, no medical insurance, death of family member, and
health problems. We chose these factors because they are the leading causes of homelessness in both
men and women.
Explanation of the Hypothesis
Women s and men s homelessness is equally important in today s society, but women are often
overlooked. Our hypothesis is stating that women are not equally represented in terms of
homelessness.
Explanation of Research Methods
When planning a sociological study it is not easy to determine the most effective way to evaluate the
situation. With this study we determined that surveys and factual representations of homelessness
would be most effective for our quantitative research. Quantitative research is defined as, The use of
sampling techniques (such as

The Risks And Rewardss Of Auto Racing
Driving cars is a common activity that many people have experienced before, be it as the driver or as a
passenger. However, there are those who take driving to a whole new level, and push themselves and
their cars to the limit. Those who do so take part in the activity called auto racing . Auto Racing is a
popular and thrilling activity, which involves cars racing in competition. This activity is a thrill
seeking activity as it involves high speeds and having drivers placed in risky situations because of this
speed. This paper analyzes the risks and rewards of auto racing to see if it can be a viable recreational
activity for the general public.
Auto racing as a hobby, comes with both risks and rewards. Recreational auto racing, whether done on

In a motor show, 26 people got injured after a unprofessional driver lost control of his car sped off the
track and into a section of the crowd (Times of Malta, 2015). The danger is not restricted to those who
practice auto racing as a legal hobby, but those who do it illegally on the streets. Street racing is an
illegal and unsanctioned activity that can be spontaneous or well coordinated, often with modified cars
that race on public streets. The Los Angeles (LA) traffic police issued hundreds of citations and made
scores of arrests in 2014 regarding illegal street racing (Stevens, Shyong, Meija, 2016). Even with
police efforts, street racing is still reported to be on the rise. An illegal street race in LA resulted in
three deaths with several others injured in February this year (Stevens, Shyong, Meija, 2016) and a
passenger in a street racing car in California died just this month after the driver lost control of his car
and crashed into a light pole (Hamilton, 2016). Why do so many people still continue to take part in
such street races despite the obvious physical danger and risks of getting into trouble with the law?
Perhaps the reason lies in the

Shared Team Leadership Paper
Shared Team Leadership
For high performance team, shared leadership is important as a project moves through the phases of
initiation, early phase, later phase and close. Wu and Cormican (2016) found that managers should
focus on developing strong internal leadership patterns at the early stage to maximize team
effectiveness, where shared leadership is prominent with team members interacting, cooperating and
exchanging information. As the team advances into later phase, leadership would turn to focus on few
individuals who might consistently demonstrate greater leadership competence. In addition, the leader
would benefit from the effective use of the Hill model for team leadership ( A framework, 2013), in
making decision (to take action or to continue to monitor the situation) and assessing appropriate
actions (internal relation related, internal task related, or external action).
Technology Transfer
In technical product development, the team could benefit from partnership with a trusted academic
institution. An article ( Entrepreneurship meets innovation, 2012) reported on a successful technology
transfer collaboration between a research institution of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shared leadership is optimal during the initial stage of product development life cycle, but leadership
evolves to focus on key individuals whose leadership stands out as the team evolves. Team leadership
approach is important in problem solving (including conflicts) as the leader decides what to do and
how to do it. In the creation of innovative products, knowledge management within the organization,
information processing, and technology transfer collaboration with a research institution would be
helpful. In addition, as the product being developed is related to the well being of humanity, ethics is
important and the team leader and members need to consider the impact of their design on the safety
and the human ways of

Mojave Desert
Mojave Desert It s hard to imagine that global warming would have much effect on the world s
already hottest deserts. Global warming increases the area of deserts. Global warming increases the
incidence of drought, which dries up water holes. The temperatures may produce an increasing
number of wildfires that alter desert landscapes by slow growing trees and Mojave Desert shrubs and
replace them with grass. Grazing animals can destroy many desert plants and animals. The largest
threat to the Mojave region lies in the ways we use the 4.3 million acres of public land, including off
road vehicles, livestock grazing, and mining. Another major threat is an invasive species. Invasive
species take up all the resources that a plant needs to survive.

An Autumn Sunset By William J. Long
William J. Long wrote in his book Outlines of English and American Literature, a book divulging the
(then) modern literature of the late 1800s and early 1900s, that Edith Wharton s works were a little
snobbish: she deals with society, and confines herself to that corner of society which complacently
regards itself as best. In consequence, there are no wide horizons in her books, which are distinctly of
the indoor variety (Long 570). He also stated that every novel is marred (or improved, as some think)
by analytical details that seldom repay a reader for the lack of action. (Long 570) The criticisms raised
by Long are fallacious, and it s proved by Wharton s poem An Autumn Sunset, written in 1895.
Universality, the daily grind, and the human experience were major facets of American Realism, and,
in contrast to Long s criticisms, were shown in An Autumn Summer through its focus on war, its
imagery of a commonplace setting, and its melancholic tone. Edith Wharton was born in a wealthy
home where she was sheltered to such an extent that she didn t even know there was a civil war. In her
autobiography, A Backwards Glance, she called her youth safe, guarded monotonous (Wharton 7).
This upbringing caused a haughty tone to seep in to many of her works, one of which stated, What can
you expect of a girl who was allowed to wear black satin to her coming out ball? (Turkington 69).
Even though her early life was sheltered from the effects of the Civil War, Wharton

Environmental Conservation Unit 511
Throughout Wilderness 511 the class learns to grasp the aspects between conservation and
preservation. The terms in general seem to be quite similar and closely related, but once the examples
are brought to the table the two terms are easily understood. When talking about conservation and
preservation the end conclusion talks about saving the wilderness and nature around us. Conservation
can be defined as a careful preservation and protection of something; especially: planned management
of a natural resource to prevent exploitation, destruction, or neglect (dictionary.com). In other words,
conservation is taking the action of preserving. Preservation can be defined as to keep alive or in
existence; make lasting (dictionary.com). A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In class we learned about Yellowstone National Park and the battle to preserve it. Yellowstone
National Park was established in 1872 as the first national park, and was made up of two million acres
(Class notes). In the early stages of this becoming a National Park it was not done so to save the parks
nature and animals, it was done so to show how useless to civilization this land was. This process
overcame many challenges, the biggest one being the railroads and the private industries (Class notes).
Adirondack State Park was also a major topic when speaking about preservation. In 1885 Adirondack
Forest was chose to be preserved due to its high demand of water supply for New York. Not only was
this important because it was a major water source but it was also the first state park to be named as
so! It was made up of over 3 million acres and was preserved as protected wilderness in 1894 (Class
notes). At this point in time it was shown that preservation was becoming worth it. Preservation was
gaining political support all over the United States. Adirondack State Park started being recognized as
utilitarian benefits because it was preserving the water supply, and being preserved for recreational use
(Class notes). Today, there

How Did Jaycee Lee Dugard Changed Life
Jaycee Lee Dugard s Changed Life
Jaycee Lee Dugard was a nine year old girl who was kidnapped by a stranger at age eleven. Phillip
Garrido was the mans name. She was kept captive for eighteen years, kept in a backyard moving from
a barn, to a house, different rooms. Being so young and taken would be the worst, not getting to be
with her family. Phillip had a wife named Nancy, they treated Jaycee like their daughter. Jaycee later
on got pregnant two times. She now has two beautiful baby girls that are growing up with her. While
Jaycee was taken she has been thinking about her old family, if they still were looking for her, if they
still cared about her. John 1:1, wisdom was created before everything , means God is living in our

Phillip took the girls with him to go see the officers and he thought nothing would happen. A little bit
after, Jaycee was at home with Nancy at the house and Phillip came back afterwards handcuffed. They
let him go in front of Nancy, while the girls and Jaycee were inside. Nancy ran up to him and was
relieved. All of them thought everything was ok. It was the same day Phillip got released that his
parole officer came back concerned that something was wrong. The officers started looking into it way
more and they found out that was Jaycee. After all that she has been through she finally got the
moment to speak to the police officers of what happened. Her mom was waiting for her in another
room while she was talking to the officers, Jaycee thought it was weird that she didn t get to be with
her mom right away. They said it was for precaution they need to know that she is alright. Jaycee
finally got to see her mom it was a great feeling getting to be in her arms, the only wrong thing was
that 18 years without seeing her mom was kind of weird and heartbreaking. They both have changed
very much, all her family has changed. Jaycee Lee Dugard took back her name on August 26, 2009.
She thought she would go straight to her mom but she had to go to therapeutic healing. They knew she
wasn t ready to go back home right away, they wanted to hear everything that happened to her. She

Buddha s Five Precepts
Along with the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, the Five Precepts are the core
principles that guide one along the path of Buddhism. These Five Precepts being: not to cause harm to
any living being, not to take anything not freely given, not to give into central overindulgence or
misconduct, not to lie, and to avoid intoxicants. Like all other religions, there are followers who
adhere to these precepts and there are those who do not. In the case of Buddhism, monks who commit
to the monastery or more inclined to follow these principles. On the other hand, there are those who
are Buddhist, even months, who strayed from these principles
Buddhism is not truly non theistic, as Buddha refers to Devas, or gods, although not as superior
beings. Buddha does refute the idea of a creator being, so this does plays it in a non theistic religion,
as opposed to an atheistic religion, where there would be no Devas. According to Molloy, all sects,
Vajrayana, Mahayana, and even Theravada follow this principle. While Theravadas tend to be stricter
than the rest, the others 10 to incorporate local customs into their Buddhist practices. ... Show more

the xenophobic behaviors displayed in all societies. There is the irrational part of human nature that
can be filled by that of our neighbors fear. The main tenets of Buddhism or designed to combat this
irrational predisposition for suffering, but we are only human. As for Burma, just because someone is

Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying
I agree with the statement, At the end of A Lesson Before Dying, desolation prevails over consolation,
because the last chapters of A Lesson Before Dying had a negative and depressing tone. According to
Sidney deRogers, He didn t pay any close attention to the black truck with the gray tarpaulin cover,
but he would tell the people at the Rainbow Club that he did feel a cold chill when the truck went by.
Basically, Sidney is saying that he felt that something was awry, or that something wrong or evil was
in that truck. The whole town knew what was happening that day and everyone had an opinion,
whether that opinion was indifferent, uneasy, or disgusted/sickened by what was going to happen on
that day. Grant says that It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud, but there was an overlying notion of
sorrow and fear that laid over everyone in the quarter. One could argue that the end of A Lesson
Before Dying prevailed with consolation rather than desolation since according to Paul, He was the
strongest man in that crowded room, Grant Wiggins. Paul s point is that Jefferson died a man as a
result of Grant. Despite what someone might say, I still consider this argument to be wrong
considering that Grant is still upset because Jefferson did not have a Jury of his peers; everyone on
that jury was white and had no concern for Jefferson s life. At the end, it seems to me that Grant feels
alone since he has spent much of the past six months with Jefferson. He developed a strong

During these times of economic difficulty, the government has reduced the amount of funding given to
the Irish Sports Council. This has a huge consequence on the Irish Sports Council and it restricts the
development of the programmes they intend to start to increase participation in sport. Lack of funding
means that the Irish Sports Council can only use a limited amount of resources and provide a limited
amount of programmes to ensure that they remain within the budget provided. Similarly, the lowered
budget means that less people can be employed to grow the programmes and raise awareness of the
initiatives of the Irish Sports Council. The implementation of the strategic plans the Irish Sports
Council has set out will encounter many difficulties. One difficulty they will encounter will be trying
to get feedback from all of the Local Sports Partnerships and from people who participate in the

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States. He held office from
January 1961 until his assassination November 1963. He served in United States Naval Reserve in
World War II. After his military service he was in the United States House of Representatives by
representing Massachusetts s 11th congressional district as a Democrat. He then served in the United
States Senate. In the 1960s Presidential Election he defeated the Republican candidate Richard Nixon.
He was the youngest president, at the age of forty three, in the United States to have been elected. On
April 1961, Kennedy sent one thousand four hundred Cuban exiles to the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. He
wanted to start a rebellion that would overthrow the communist leader Fidel Castro. However, the
mission did not succeed and most of the exiles were captured or killed (1). In 1962, the Kennedy

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Adaptive E-Learning
Introduction
Learning is the process of acquiring a new, modifying or reinforcing knowledge. In traditional
classroom setting, learning is the process of knowledge transfer from the teacher to the students. The
process, it can be done usually by oral techniques, note taking, and using less technology. The
traditional school usually requires students to attend classes in person, and there is a fixed amount of
time for interaction.
In the information and communication age, the learning process can be relies using a personal
computer and internet connection as a channel. The students should not in the same place and the
same time as the teacher. Nevertheless, the students can acquire the knowledge as well as it obtains in
the traditional classroom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition material is presented in a similar content to all users as well. However there are limitations
with this approach. As we can see, each students have their own pace and learning behavior. Thus
students should be treated as individuals rather than as a homogeneous group in E Learning. In order
to address that problem, it needs such kind of system that takes into account the different student s
preferences.
Adaptive E Learning helps students to be able to learn according to the learning style and level of
ability. Adaptive E Learning will display and navigate material in accordance with the student s
learning style and knowledge level. By using Adaptive E Learning, is expected to improve the
efficiency and effectiveness of the learning process. Student s satisfaction can be reached as well.
The objective of this paper is to propose an architectural model for an adaptive e learning system
based on the student s learning style and knowledge level. The system will present different navigation
and particular material to the learner s preferred style and appropriated knowledge state.

The Effect Of Flicker Paradigm On Visual Perception
Discussion The purpose of the study was to measure the effect that the Flicker Paradigm had on visual
perception. The Flicker Paradigm causes a distraction while there is a change made in the image. It
was designed to test how long the groups took to react to a change in the visual field. The test is meant
to show that the disturbance in the visual field made it much more challenging for the viewer to notice
any changes that were made in the image. The hypothesis stated that the experimental group, the
group using the Flicker Paradigm, would take longer to notice the change in the visual field than the
control group, which had no flicker between the altered images. This is because the disturbance in the
visual field caused the brain to miss the change that was made to the image because the information
was deemed as unimportant. The majority of the perceived changes occurred in the background of the
scene, and were considered minor in reference to the whole scene. This was proven true from the data
collected, and coincided with previous tests. (Rensink, R. A. 2000). The data in tables 1.1 and 1.3
shows the individual participant data for the test with a flicker for both tests one and two. Tables 1.2

Stereotypes In Paul Theroux sBeing A Man
There are two types of men portrayed by the media. There is the lazy dad who spends all day sitting in
the recliner eating potato chips and watching television. This man always has his wife taking care of
everything while he is a bumbling fool who can do nothing right. This man is harmless and
unintelligent. Then there is the action hero man. This man has a rugged, muscular build and is usually
very attractive. He can accomplish any task using his fist, but struggles to think through things
logically. Every man sees these two stereotypes and begins to try to fit one of them. This leads the
man to ask himself the question What is a Man? . Being a man is not letting stereotypes define him,
standing firm in his convictions, but being accepting of others at the same time, knowing when or
when not to take action, and having a dream. If asked what does it mean to be a man? the most
common responses would be answers like protector, provider, and taking charge. While there is
inherently nothing wrong with these answers the real problem lies in the fact which all men cannot
live up to these standards. These men are left questioning themselves on their masculinity. A man
should not let stereotypes define him. Paul Theroux addresses many of the common stereotypes in his
essay Being a Man , I was told to take up a sport, get more fresh air, join the Boy Scouts, and I was
urged not to read so much. and
Being a drunkard is another assertion, if misplaced, of manliness... A man proves his manhood in
America in old fashioned ways. He kills lions, like Hemingway; or he hunts ducks. like Nathanael
West; or he makes pronouncements like, A man should carry enough knife to defend himself with, as
James Jones once said to a Life interviewer (Theroux). Theroux addresses these common stereotypes
to prove how futile they are. A man should not let other people s idea of how a man should be
influence them. Many of the stereotypes listed by Theroux are unfeasible and hard for any man to
accomplish, further adding to the futility of them. Scott Russell Sanders compares two common
stereotypes of men in his essay The Men We Carry in Our Minds . Sanders address the stereotype of
the rugged muscular man who works all of his life

Father And Son Historians, Arthur M. Schlesinger Essay
Father and son historians, Arthur M. Schlesinger and Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., asked some of the top
historians in the country to rank each president in the categories Great, Near Great, Average, Below
Average, and Failure based on their time in the White House (Schlesinger Jr. 179). The official
ranking lists Andrew Jackson as the fifth best president overall, which landed him a comfortable spot
in the Near Great category. Andrew Jackson s presidency belongs in a much lower category due to his
immoral character, unilateral decision making, and his unimpressive presidency relative to that of
other presidents. Before expanding on the specifics of why Andrew Jackson does not belong in the
Near Great category, the criteria that Andrew Jackson along with other presidents will be analyzed
against needs to be outlined. First, the qualifications of each president are of the utmost importance
when determining presidential greatness. The qualifications of the president are delineated in Article II
of the U.S. Constitution. The president s established qualifications outlined in Article II are as follows:
to be eligible, one must be a natural born citizen of the United States, must have lived in the United
States for at least 14 years, and must be at least 35 years of age (Cornell). Though important, these
qualifications alone would allow almost anyone over the age of 35 to be qualified enough to become
president.

feminism because the movie takes place in 1960 and is about women anticipating and defending
themselves against horny men. It s victim is lured into a room full of guys not seeing what is about to
happen and says that actions are often not perceived correctly and this is where the different
sexualities are noticed (84). This point can be argued because the media blows things out of
proportion and this evidence isn t really evidence because it 3 lacks reality and is an opinion of Paglia
s. Paglia s final assumption in her essay is geared toward both sexes and how we must prevent rape as
a society. Men and women must come to certain identities, which are somewhat similar but are easily
distinguished according to Paglia in my point of view. When a man has sex with a girl it is said that he
is entering manhood. When a woman menstruates she is becoming a real woman and she wants

Acetylation of Ferrocene
Acetylation of Ferrocene 17. October 1996 Experiment #7 Introduction In this lab we will be utilizing
the Friedel Crafts process of acetylation of ferrocene. Ferrocene is an atom of iron bounded by two
aromatic rings. We will use some reagents that will cause the ferrocene to add either one acetyl group
to an aromatic ring or add two acetyl groups to each of the aromatic rings. In order to determine how
well this process had worked we employed: IR spectra analysis, column chromatography, and a little
TLC. This experiment is relevant in today s highly industrialized world. By utilizing many of the
techniques we employ in this lab, a company can synthesize new types of materials or composites that
could revolutionize an industry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Negative Connotation In My Papa s Waltz
While it is true that My Papa s Waltz uses what would be perceived as negative connotation, it does
not necessarily define the story. As much as the average reader would think that this story is about
abuse, that was not the author s intention. Theodore Roethke wrote this poem with nothing but
fondness for his father; however, many still believe that as uninspired as that message of abuse may
be, there could still be a reason for it to be there. Being a poem gives it that pull that allows it to be
interpreted both ways. You could say that both sides of the poem were meant to be present but that s
just not as satisfying. It seems that with My Papa s Waltz people are one way or the other, no in
between. Even if somebody were to know the history of the author which involves his much praised
father, it s possible that they might still think the story is of abuse. While the subject of My Papa s
Waltz by Theodore Roethke has spurred passionate academic debate from professors, scholars, and
students alike, the imagery, syntax, and diction of the poem clearly support the interpretation that
Roethke writes My Papa s Waltz as a nostalgic ode to his father. Roethke wanted to express the
fondness he had for his father as a child even though his dad was not perfect.
While one researches Roethke s past for the poem they might learn some interesting information in
regards to his father and how the time period might change the context for lines that may have been

Lab Report On Injection Molding
2.1 Introduction
In this lab, we are requiring to observe the effect of injection molding process variables to the tensile
strength of Polypropylene (PP). As the outcome of this change, the specimen will be measure as to
determine its change of properties based on different variables. The process variables that will be
changes is injection pressure, and the material that be used as the specimen is PP. The scope of this
study is focusing on the simulation of tensile strength on the raw materials including determination of
the effective parameters that contribute to the response.
2.2 History of Injection Molding
The injection molding has grown since its beginnings in the late 1800 s. In 1868, John Wesley Hyatt
has created a way to make billiard balls by injecting celluloid into a mold. Thus, in 1872, both John
and his brother Isaiah Hyatt patented the injection molding machine. The machine was primitive and it
is suitable for their purposes, where it contained a basic plunger that used to inject the plastic into a
mold through a heated cylinder. In 1946, James Hendry has built the first screw injection molding
machine to replace Hyatt s plunger with an auger design, where the auger built is placed inside the
cylinder and mixes the injection material, before it pushing forward and injecting the material into the
mold. Nowadays, almost all injection molding machines use the same technique as before. [2]

The Invention Of Skateboard In The 1940 s
Around the time of the 1940 s was when the first ever skateboard was made. In the early 1940 s and
1950 s many surfers in California wanted something to do when the waves were flat which mean, they
weren t able to surf. The people who supposedly came up with the idea were a few surfers who wanted
to be able to do something similar as they did in the water. Skateboarding history still has a mysterious
origin. No one to this day knows who actually invented the skate board. Several people have claimed
to have made the skateboard but nothing has been proven. In 1965 skate boarding s popularity began
to reach its s top. First skateboarders started with wooden boxes or boards with roller skate wheels

Some skateboarders also own longboards, and love longboarding just as much as skateboarding. Some
skaters even believe that longboarding is the best way to earn how to ride. This makes sense to me
because longboards are usually more stable and secure because of their length. And not only can they
be used for enjoyment, but they also help you save gas when you commute. An old school skateboard
is extremely different from the skateboards of today. Old school skateboards normally are talking
about skateboards that were popular in the past and are not really used today. They are sometimes
known as classic skateboards. The term Old school skateboards is usually used to talk about any
skateboard that goes back to the 1980 s. No matter what skateboards have been around sense the 1930

When Can Babies Eat Honey?
Honey is a natural substance produced by bees and popularly consumed by humans for health reasons.
Aside from being useful as a remedy for asthma, cough, hay fever, stomach problems and diarrhea,
honey is also delightful to the taste. Parents may want to allow their babies to experience new tastes,
such as that of honey, but health experts warn that the proper time to introduce honey to young babies
must be considered because serious side effects may occur when it is given too early.
When Can Babies Eat Honey?
Many cultures believe in the health benefits of honey and allow their babies to eat it early in their
lives. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents not to give their babies
raw or unpasteurized honey if they are younger than 12 months old. It should not be added to water,
formula or food, including processed or baked goods. This also includes beverages, bread or cereals
that may be sweetened with honey. This may be a conservative guideline but it is worth considering
and discussing with your baby s doctor (pediatrician).
Why Is Honey Unsafe for Your Babies?
1. Why is honey unsafe for your babies?
The main reason for delaying the introduction of honey to a baby s diet is that it can cause infant
botulism. This condition is caused by the ingestion of Clostridium botulinum spores. This type of
bacteria produces toxins inside the digestive tract and can lead to serious side effects. These include
paralysis of the baby s muscles, which can also

Financial Position of Tesco PLC
Introduction The relevance of evaluating both the financial performance as well as position of Tesco
PLC cannot be overstated. This is more so the case given the need to determine the stability and
viability of the company going forward. This text seeks to evaluate the financial performance as well
as position of Tesco PLC by amongst other things analyzing the entity s financial statements. In this
case, the evaluation will be based on the company s recently published annual accounts.
Tesco PLC: Company Background Yahoo! Finance (2012) describes Tesco PLC as a company that
operates stores that primarily offer food products, as well as general merchandise, clothing products,
and electrical products. In addition to that, Tesco PLC is also involved in the provision of insurance,
financial as well as banking (retail) services (Yahoo! Finance, 2012). Taking into consideration the
number of branches it has in various parts of the world, Tesco PLC can be regarded one of the largest
retailers around the globe. Having been established sometimes in the year 1919 by Jack Cohen, the
company has surely come a long way (Tesco, 2012). The phenomenal growth of Tesco PLC over time
can largely be attributed to both the unwavering vision of the founder and the selection of a competent
team of managers to run the company s operations during its growth phase. Currently, the company
top management team comprises of its CEO Andrew Clarke, its Chief Financial Officer Laurie

Motivation Students With Learning Disabilities
Motivation in Students with Learning Disabilities
Rizka Puspitarani (3490616)
What is Learning Disability?
Learning disabilities (LD), or in some clinical cases called specific learning disorder, is a
neurodevelopmental disorder which the individual is experiencing difficulties in learning and using
academic skills (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Person with LD usually shows at least one
difficulty in literacy (i.e.: inaccurate or slow and takes effort to read, difficult to understand the
meaning of what he/she reads, difficult to spell words, or difficult with written expression) or in
numerical reasoning (i.e.: number sense, calculation, or mathematical reasoning). Dyslexia and
dyscalculia are the examples of specific cases in LD. The prevalence of school age children with LD is
5% 15% of the population across different language and cultures with males have higher risk than
females (2:1 to 3:1); while the prevalence of adults with LD is approximately 4%. The prognostic
factors of LD might because of genetic factors or environmental factors (i.e.: premature, low birth
weight, or nicotine exposure during prenatal).
How is motivation in students with LD?
Number of studies had examined motivation in students with LD. The results show that motivation
score is lower in children with LD (Grolnick Ryan, 1990; Lincoln Chazan, 1979). In Grolnick and
Ryan study (1990), both teacher and students themselves reported significantly less autonomous and

Casual Wear By James Merrill
As humans in order to connect and relate to those around us we tend to judge other people and what
they believe in. If we agree with them about a topic then we are able to connect with them by
discussing the similar opinions we have on that specific topic. If we disagree with them on a topic then
we can examine why and look at the topic from a different perspective. Often though, if we do not
agree with someone else s beliefs or opinions, we will criticize them without making much of an effort
to understand where they are coming from. Along with having a closed mind to others opinions, we do
not look at our own opinions to see how they could be flawed or be seen as absurde. In James Merrill
s poem Casual Wear the author uses contrasting images to drive a point across to the reader about how
we are hypocrites when we criticize others values and what they will do to make their opinion known
and standing up for what they believe in, instead believing that we are innocent when we make our
own opinions known. Merrill can see that we are hypocrites in thinking that we are innocent when
standing up for our values, but when others stand up for their own they just cause damage, and he tries
to make this known to us through his poem. In the first stanza of Merrill s poem we are given a
description of an average tourist. Someone you would see on any day walking down the street. Merrill
makes it so we can relate to this tourist by making the character someone we have all been at

perfectly. The vast sea of knowledge mastered by
Internists and the multiple different diseases they were exposed to simply astonished me. I found that

I believe that my mind is somehow programmed towards Internal
Medicine; as I found myself thinking as an Internist no matter what rotation I was in. I always viewed
the patient s problem from an Internist s point of view. The view that deals with the patient as a whole
entity, rather than focusing on one aspect of the patient s concern, or viewing it from a single or
narrow angle.
My love for Internal Medicine was no secret and I will never forget the moment when one of my
colleagues told me during my first Internal Medicine rotation that I appeared as if I was living the best
days of my life. She was not exaggerating when she said that to me, because I literally was. My
relationship with Internal Medicine is a very unique and special one; I don t think there are words that
can truly describe my love and passion for this fascinating, unique and noble specialty. Internal
Medicine is my territory, it is where I am most comfortable, it is where I speak most fluently.
Many experiences I have been through had a tremendous impact on reinforcing my decision to enter

Act Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism
1. Utilitarians believe that one should so act as to promote the greatest happiness (pleasure) of the
greatest number of people (Angeles 326). However, within the utilitarian community there are major
splits in how we are to determine which action brings us the greatest amounts of pleasure. Today I will
be focusing on two ways to determine which actions bring the greatest amount of pleasure to a
situation: act and rule utilitarianism. I will define both act and rule utilitarianism, give a situation
where both can be applied, and respond to an objection of utilitarianism. I will also be discussing why
I believe act utilitarianism helps more people than rule utilitarianism, in turn, becoming superior to
rule utilitarianism.
2. To begin, I will be defining both act and rule utilitarianism. In act utilitarianism, you determine the
morality of an act by measuring the pleasures and pains for a specific situation Angeles 326). Act
utilitarians take into consideration only those affected in the specific situation. However, rule
utilitarianism determines the morality of an act according to the good or bad consequences that ensue
from following a general moral rule of conduct... (Angeles 326). Good examples of those general
moral rules are phrases like, never steal or never tell a lie. In any situation, people can use either act or
rule utilitarianism to determine the correct course of action.
3. Now, I will use a hypothetical situation to describe both act and rule

Analysis Of sleepless On Seattle, The Communication...
In applying the above theories to the movie Sleepless in Seattle, the communication privacy
management theory appears several times throughout the film. Annie has two contrasting experiences
with privacy boundaries. Annie is engaged Walter, a wonderfully kind and gentle man, who absolutely
adores her, but has an obvious character flaw with his constant talk of allergies. Annie gives the
impression that she is incredibly happy with Walter when in reality she is quite bored with him. While
Annie loves Walter s tenderness, she can t disclose her deep dark secrets with him, especially her
doubts about their engagement and feelings of she s just settling for what s good for her and not the
magic that Sam describes during his radio interview. She cannot stop thinking of Sam and Jonah after
listening in on a talk show radio broadcast as she s driving one evening. Sam s words are constantly
on Annie s mind and she begins to wonder if Sam is possibly her soul mate. With Walter she has a
thick, impenetrable wall that is holding in her deep secrets. At one point, she hides in a closet one
night while Walter is sleeping so she can listen to Sam speaking on the radio. When Walter catches her
in the closet, she lies to him instead of confessing her apprehensions and obsession. Throughout the
entire film, she struggles with herself for withholding this important information from Walter, but she
has total ownership of that private information and does not feel the need to

challenges since the company opened their doors to the public and government contract work. The

America And Its Homeland Security Online Essay
America and Its Homeland Security Online
Abstract: Everyday security is provided by the states and federal government. These tasks get more
difficult as new technology introduces itself. Cybersecurity is one of the most popular security sectors
in today s world. There is not only cyberbullying going on in the world. Terrorism can be planned and
sent from person to person over the internet. People s identities are being stole to help carry out these
terrorist acts and this is just the being of it. The United States created the Department of Homeland
Security as a result of the 9/11 attacks. This was an effort to prevent future terrorist attacks on our
nation. Along with that department, laws have been enacted, such as the USA PATRIOT Act. This law
was introduced and passed to provide Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies with better
resources to fight and stand up against terrorism. The way to successfully providing security against
domestic and international terrorists is to understand the mentality of a terrorist. Critical assessments,
more efficient alert systems, and physical security standards must improve in order to solidify our
current security posture if the United States wants to deter future terrorist attacks against its culture
and economy. So let us all start at the very beginning. What is the major threat behind cyber terrorism
and cyber vandalism? Once you take a major look at the early years, the internet and websites were

Depiction Of Gladiator
A True Depiction of a Gladiator
There have been many movies that try to demonstrate how gladiators trained for their violent combat
against other gladiators, in hope to win and keep their lives at the end of their gruesome battles.
Although, the 1960 s movie Spartacus, with Kirk Douglas, had a few differences demonstrating how
actual gladiators trained in Rome, it still contains more accurate scenes displaying their intense
training. The movie showed the kind of training schools they were in, the armor used, and the styles of
fighting that they practiced to prepare these men, as they did hundreds of years ago in Rome.
To begin with, around 264 BC the gladiator games were introduced in Rome, called Munera. These
games were initially hosted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Rome, there were around 30 different gladiators that were experts with the different shields,
weapons, and armor. There were the elite gladiators, who were freed and decided to remain as
gladiators. Then there were heavily armed gladiators that had a lot of armor and were protected, but
had very little movement when fighting. Finally, there were the lightly armed gladiators, they had little
to no armor, but had the ability to move more freely when fighting. The armor used during their
practices was wooden swords and shields instead of real equipment, for the protection of the
gladiators, the soldiers, and trainers who worked there. When it was time for a match the gladiators
would use real swords, shields, and sometimes armor to battle (Types of Gladiators). The gladiators
also were used to represent strong gods by the way they were dressed and the weapons they used. For
instance, there were unusual weapons, such as a trident, used by the god Neptune, and the use of a net
to follow the water god theme (Retiarri). Unlike in actual gladiator schools, in the movie, it did not
seem to have the men separated by their specialty but they all train together. Spartacus, and the other
gladiators did train using wooden swords and shields. There was a scene were Spartacus had to
actually fight till the death with another gladiator from the school, because some wealthy government
men and their wives came to Ludi Gladiatorium and wanted to see a fight. They paid a high
percentage of money to make this happen, since it was not allowed to fight these gladiators till death
in the schools. Spartacus was given a short sword and a shield, while his opponent was given a fish net
and a trident to battle. Although, Spartacus did not win that fight because his opponent spared his life,
the man did unfortunately get murdered on

Relationship Between Child Support And Child Relationship
Parent to Child Relationship Analyzed by Child Support and Disconnection
I am writing about the topic of how child support can affect the relationship a parent feels towards
their child. In a sense that it can make the parent feel as if the child is an expense. As something they
have to constantly keep up with like a phone bill or water bill. I chose this topic because I feel that
there is a disconnection between parents that are required to pay child support toward their child.
Those parents paying child support in most instances are only allowed to see their child for a certain
period of time. That being a weekend or every other weekend. If not at all in the most extreme cases.
This disconnection in turn can lead to a broken relationship between the parent and the child. The
parent is seen as a negative figure by the child whereas the parent sees the child as an expense. Which
can lead to other negative impacts between the family. The parent with full custody or majority
custody is a better able to raise the child and instill negative feelings about the other parent into the
child. What is significant and interesting about this particular field of inquiry that this is constantly
happening in modern time. As seen through high levels of divorce, custody battles, and parents that
are required to pay child support on a monthly basis. At times the other parent with majority custody
can even be better off as they are receiving another check while the parent required to pay child
support is at times struggling to get by. Needless to say that the parent required to pay child support is
at fault and put themselves in the situation in the first place. The challenges I expect to face while
researching are unscholarly resources in which frustrated parents post on online websites. Even
though these experiences may be first hand insights they are most likely posted to unscholarly
websites which cannot be used for this essay. A possible thesis is, child support leads to a broken
relationship between a parent and a child with the cause of future disconnection. The research question
being, Does child support make a parent feel like their child is an expense that leads to disconnection?

All year long there will be some bass that hold up in the deep waters. No one knows why but some
bass just don t move around very much. With that said, nowhere does it say cold weather days are the
only time bass hang out in the deep. For my deep water I use mainly soft plastics. Worms to be
precise. Not that long ago the Senko worm came out and they have been hot ever since. There are so
many ways to fish with worms. Just to name a few you have the classic Texas rig, wacky worm and
the Neko rig. I am a firm believer in the Texas Rig. I am going to give let you know how to fish with
the Texas and Neko rig.
Got to Love some deep water worms!
The Texas rig is my favorite worm rig and most commonly used. I am pretty sure the Texas rig was
created around the time Texas became a state. As far as I know the Texas rig Is the oldest technique for
fishing with worms.

  • 2. That Hideous Strength Analysis When C.S. Lewis wrote That Hideous Strength , the characters Mark and Jane show their differences when it came to values and morals. Even though culture can be educational, in today s society it has effects when it comes to the learned behaviors. I will show comparisons and contrast when it comes to my culture and the culture that is portrayed in the book. Cultural behaviors shape who we are and what we stand for. In the text I gathered Jane to be restricted and resentful while Mark on the other hand has many friends, but always seems to fall short when communicating with other fellows at Bracton College. I suppose there are two views about everything, said Mark. (Lewis, pg 70). When we discuss culture and values each generation has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They never warned you. No one has ever told you that obedience humility is an erotic necessity. You are putting equality just where it ought to be (Lewis, pg. ) Humility to me meant a desire to stay humble. Equality means to be equal when a person wants to increase status, equal right opportunities. For example, the criminal justice system is truly unfair and unjust, making race the number one priority in most cases. The values that we portray are learned such as respect. Power and control seem to rule social positions and how people relate to others. The perspective of education has now been the American Dream. In today s world you have to work hard to obtain equality among different diversities and most importantly gender. These values that I possess are different from the characters in the book. I am honest, trustworthy, open minded, empathetic and patient when it comes to dealing with other people. In the text the characters seemed to be fearful, dishonest, judgmental, treating people like a means to an end and bias in different interactions. When comparing my values of the characters in the text one thing was very similar GOD. Religion in the text whether good or evil existed between St. Anne s and N.I.C.E. organization. • 3. Essay On Assimilation In Canada Within the international community Canada is regarded as an ethnically diverse country. Conversely having many cultures under one roof does not represent multiculturalism. Over the 150 years Canada has existed, there have been many instances of persecution against immigrant and First Nation populations. Thomas King s Totem and Wayson Choy The Jade Peony unveil how their cultures fight to hold onto their heritage. This heritage which they regard very highly is stripped away by the government to force an inclusion into Canadian Society. Canada s ethnic groups are forced to separate into isolated islands or else they are coerced into assimilation. Ever since white settlers landed on Canadian shores in the 1600 s, there have been conflicts with the First Nations. From driving them off their land to exterminating them with European diseases, the First Nation population has been struggling to keep their lineage and history from being erased. With the struggle to keep themselves from being cut [off] close to the floor (Page 2) the First Nation society has been confined to a small patch of land called a reservation , a small downsize from all of Canada. The forced isolation that their population has endured has meant that the chances of the First Nations integrating into modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. A Explanation Of The Problem Of Homelessness Explanation of the Variables Homelessness is a temporary problem that people fall into when they cannot afford to pay their rent or mortgage, or when their home becomes unsafe or unstable. Other factors, such as job loss, health and psychological disabilities can accelerate people s slide into poverty, and for some, eventual homelessness. The lack of housing, access to healthcare, and supportive services, then act as others barriers that keep individuals from moving into a home. There are a variety of different factors that can affect someone and potentially cause them to become impoverished. These factors include: substance abuse (drugs or alcohol), mental illness, domestic violence, job loss, eviction, army, natural disaster, no medical insurance, death of family member, and health problems. We chose these factors because they are the leading causes of homelessness in both men and women. Explanation of the Hypothesis Women s and men s homelessness is equally important in today s society, but women are often overlooked. Our hypothesis is stating that women are not equally represented in terms of homelessness. Explanation of Research Methods When planning a sociological study it is not easy to determine the most effective way to evaluate the situation. With this study we determined that surveys and factual representations of homelessness would be most effective for our quantitative research. Quantitative research is defined as, The use of sampling techniques (such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Auto Racing is a popular and thrilling activity, which involves cars racing in competition. This activity is a thrill seeking activity as it involves high speeds and having drivers placed in risky situations because of this speed. In a motor show, 26 people got injured after a unprofessional driver lost control of his car sped off the track and into a section of the crowd (Times of Malta, 2015). The danger is not restricted to those who practice auto racing as a legal hobby, but those who do it illegally on the streets. Street racing is an illegal and unsanctioned activity that can be spontaneous or well coordinated, often with modified cars that race on public streets. The Los Angeles (LA) traffic police issued hundreds of citations and made scores of arrests in 2014 regarding illegal street racing (Stevens, Shyong, Meija, 2016). Even with police efforts, street racing is still reported to be on the rise. An illegal street race in LA resulted in three deaths with several others injured in February this year (Stevens, Shyong, Meija, 2016) and a passenger in a street racing car in California died just this month after the driver lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole (Hamilton, 2016). Why do so many people still continue to take part in such street races despite the obvious physical danger and risks of getting into trouble with the law? Perhaps the reason lies in the ... Shared Team Leadership Paper Shared Team Leadership For high performance team, shared leadership is important as a project moves through the phases of initiation, early phase, later phase and close. Wu and Cormican (2016) found that managers should focus on developing strong internal leadership patterns at the early stage to maximize team effectiveness, where shared leadership is prominent with team members interacting, cooperating and exchanging information. As the team advances into later phase, leadership would turn to focus on few individuals who might consistently demonstrate greater leadership competence. In addition, the leader would benefit from the effective use of the Hill model for team leadership ( A framework, 2013), in making decision (to take action or to continue to monitor the situation) and assessing appropriate actions (internal relation related, internal task related, or external action). • 8. An Autumn Sunset By William J. Long William J. Long wrote in his book Outlines of English and American Literature, a book divulging the (then) modern literature of the late 1800s and early 1900s, that Edith Wharton s works were a little snobbish: she deals with society, and confines herself to that corner of society which complacently regards itself as best. In consequence, there are no wide horizons in her books, which are distinctly of the indoor variety (Long 570). He also stated that every novel is marred (or improved, as some think) by analytical details that seldom repay a reader for the lack of action. (Long 570) The criticisms raised by Long are fallacious, and it s proved by Wharton s poem An Autumn Sunset, written in 1895. Universality, the daily grind, and the human experience were major facets of American Realism, and, in contrast to Long s criticisms, were shown in An Autumn Summer through its focus on war, its imagery of a commonplace setting, and its melancholic tone. Edith Wharton was born in a wealthy home where she was sheltered to such an extent that she didn t even know there was a civil war. In her autobiography, A Backwards Glance, she called her youth safe, guarded monotonous (Wharton 7). This upbringing caused a haughty tone to seep in to many of her works, one of which stated, What can you expect of a girl who was allowed to wear black satin to her coming out ball? (Turkington 69). The terms in general seem to be quite similar and closely related, but once the examples are brought to the table the two terms are easily understood. Conservation can be defined as a careful preservation and protection of something; especially: planned management of a natural resource to prevent exploitation, destruction, or neglect (dictionary.com). Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 as the first national park, and was made up of two million acres (Class notes). In the early stages of this becoming a National Park it was not done so to save the parks nature and animals, it was done so to show how useless to civilization this land was. This process overcame many challenges, the biggest one being the railroads and the private industries (Class notes). Adirondack State Park was also a major topic when speaking about preservation. In 1885 Adirondack Forest was chose to be preserved due to its high demand of water supply for New York. Not only was this important because it was a major water source but it was also the first state park to be named as so! It was made up of over 3 million acres and was preserved as protected wilderness in 1894 (Class notes). At this point in time it was shown that preservation was becoming worth it. • 14. Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying I agree with the statement, At the end of A Lesson Before Dying, desolation prevails over consolation, because the last chapters of A Lesson Before Dying had a negative and depressing tone. According to Sidney deRogers, He didn t pay any close attention to the black truck with the gray tarpaulin cover, but he would tell the people at the Rainbow Club that he did feel a cold chill when the truck went by. Basically, Sidney is saying that he felt that something was awry, or that something wrong or evil was in that truck. The whole town knew what was happening that day and everyone had an opinion, whether that opinion was indifferent, uneasy, or disgusted/sickened by what was going to happen on that day. Grant says that It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud, but there was an overlying notion of sorrow and fear that laid over everyone in the quarter. One could argue that the end of A Lesson Before Dying prevailed with consolation rather than desolation since according to Paul, He was the strongest man in that crowded room, Grant Wiggins. Paul s point is that Jefferson died a man as a result of Grant. Despite what someone might say, I still consider this argument to be wrong considering that Grant is still upset because Jefferson did not have a Jury of his peers; everyone on that jury was white and had no concern for Jefferson s life. At the end, it seems to me that Grant feels alone since he has spent much of the past six months with Jefferson. He developed a strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Effect Of Flicker Paradigm On Visual Perception Discussion The purpose of the study was to measure the effect that the Flicker Paradigm had on visual perception. The Flicker Paradigm causes a distraction while there is a change made in the image. It was designed to test how long the groups took to react to a change in the visual field. The test is meant to show that the disturbance in the visual field made it much more challenging for the viewer to notice any changes that were made in the image. The hypothesis stated that the experimental group, the group using the Flicker Paradigm, would take longer to notice the change in the visual field than the control group, which had no flicker between the altered images. This is because the disturbance in the visual field caused the brain to miss the change that was made to the image because the information was deemed as unimportant. The majority of the perceived changes occurred in the background of the scene, and were considered minor in reference to the whole scene. This was proven true from the data collected, and coincided with previous tests. (Rensink, R. A. 2000). The data in tables 1.1 and 1.3 shows the individual participant data for the test with a flicker for both tests one and two. Tables 1.2 and 1.4 represent the individual results for the tests with no flicker, or the control group. • 19. Stereotypes In Paul Theroux sBeing A Man There are two types of men portrayed by the media. There is the lazy dad who spends all day sitting in the recliner eating potato chips and watching television. This man always has his wife taking care of everything while he is a bumbling fool who can do nothing right. This man is harmless and unintelligent. Then there is the action hero man. This man has a rugged, muscular build and is usually very attractive. He can accomplish any task using his fist, but struggles to think through things logically. Every man sees these two stereotypes and begins to try to fit one of them. This leads the man to ask himself the question What is a Man? . Being a man is not letting stereotypes define him, standing firm in his convictions, but being accepting of others at the same time, knowing when or when not to take action, and having a dream. If asked what does it mean to be a man? the most common responses would be answers like protector, provider, and taking charge. While there is inherently nothing wrong with these answers the real problem lies in the fact which all men cannot live up to these standards. These men are left questioning themselves on their masculinity. A man should not let stereotypes define him. Paul Theroux addresses many of the common stereotypes in his essay Being a Man , I was told to take up a sport, get more fresh air, join the Boy Scouts, and I was urged not to read so much. and Being a drunkard is another assertion, if misplaced, of manliness... A man proves his manhood in America in old fashioned ways. He kills lions, like Hemingway; or he hunts ducks. like Nathanael West; or he makes pronouncements like, A man should carry enough knife to defend himself with, as James Jones once said to a Life interviewer (Theroux). Theroux addresses these common stereotypes to prove how futile they are. A man should not let other people s idea of how a man should be influence them. Many of the stereotypes listed by Theroux are unfeasible and hard for any man to accomplish, further adding to the futility of them. Schlesinger Jr., asked some of the top historians in the country to rank each president in the categories Great, Near Great, Average, Below Average, and Failure based on their time in the White House (Schlesinger Jr. 179). The official ranking lists Andrew Jackson as the fifth best president overall, which landed him a comfortable spot in the Near Great category. Andrew Jackson s presidency belongs in a much lower category due to his immoral character, unilateral decision making, and his unimpressive presidency relative to that of other presidents. Before expanding on the specifics of why Andrew Jackson does not belong in the Near Great category, the criteria that Andrew Jackson along with other presidents will be analyzed against needs to be outlined. First, the qualifications of each president are of the utmost importance when determining presidential greatness. The qualifications of the president are delineated in Article II of the U.S. Constitution. The president s established qualifications outlined in Article II are as follows: to be eligible, one must be a natural born citizen of the United States, must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years, and must be at least 35 years of age (Cornell). Though important, these qualifications alone would allow almost anyone over the age of 35 to be qualified enough to become president. To go above and beyond the baseline criterion, a person needs ... As much as the average reader would think that this story is about abuse, that was not the author s intention. Theodore Roethke wrote this poem with nothing but fondness for his father; however, many still believe that as uninspired as that message of abuse may be, there could still be a reason for it to be there. Being a poem gives it that pull that allows it to be interpreted both ways. You could say that both sides of the poem were meant to be present but that s just not as satisfying. • 32. Casual Wear By James Merrill As humans in order to connect and relate to those around us we tend to judge other people and what they believe in. If we agree with them about a topic then we are able to connect with them by discussing the similar opinions we have on that specific topic. If we disagree with them on a topic then we can examine why and look at the topic from a different perspective. Often though, if we do not agree with someone else s beliefs or opinions, we will criticize them without making much of an effort to understand where they are coming from. Along with having a closed mind to others opinions, we do not look at our own opinions to see how they could be flawed or be seen as absurde. In James Merrill s poem Casual Wear the author uses contrasting images to drive a point across to the reader about how we are hypocrites when we criticize others values and what they will do to make their opinion known and standing up for what they believe in, instead believing that we are innocent when we make our own opinions known. Merrill can see that we are hypocrites in thinking that we are innocent when standing up for our values, but when others stand up for their own they just cause damage, and he tries to make this known to us through his poem. In the first stanza of Merrill s poem we are given a description of an average tourist. Someone you would see on any day walking down the street. Merrill makes it so we can relate to this tourist by making the character someone we have all been at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Essay Personal Statement For Internal Medicine Personal Statement Tuqa Al Khalaf I write to explore the opportunity of securing a position in your prestigious Internal Medicine residency program. My passion for Internal Medicine started during my very first Internal Medicine rotation when I was a fourth year medical student. I immediately knew that I was meant to be an Internist. I fitted in perfectly. The vast sea of knowledge mastered by Internists and the multiple different diseases they were exposed to simply astonished me. I found that Internal Medicine was, in fact, the essence of medicine. I truly believe there is no other specialty that is more comprehensive and more representative of the art of medicine. There was nothing more pleasurable and rewarding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that my mind is somehow programmed towards Internal Medicine; as I found myself thinking as an Internist no matter what rotation I was in. I always viewed the patient s problem from an Internist s point of view. The view that deals with the patient as a whole entity, rather than focusing on one aspect of the patient s concern, or viewing it from a single or narrow angle. My love for Internal Medicine was no secret and I will never forget the moment when one of my colleagues told me during my first Internal Medicine rotation that I appeared as if I was living the best days of my life. She was not exaggerating when she said that to me, because I literally was. My relationship with Internal Medicine is a very unique and special one; I don t think there are words that can truly describe my love and passion for this fascinating, unique and noble specialty. Internal Medicine is my territory, it is where I am most comfortable, it is where I speak most fluently. Many experiences I have been through had a tremendous impact on reinforcing my decision to enter this marvelous field. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Act Utilitarianism And Rule Utilitarianism 1. Utilitarians believe that one should so act as to promote the greatest happiness (pleasure) of the greatest number of people (Angeles 326). However, within the utilitarian community there are major splits in how we are to determine which action brings us the greatest amounts of pleasure. Today I will be focusing on two ways to determine which actions bring the greatest amount of pleasure to a situation: act and rule utilitarianism. I will define both act and rule utilitarianism, give a situation where both can be applied, and respond to an objection of utilitarianism. I will also be discussing why I believe act utilitarianism helps more people than rule utilitarianism, in turn, becoming superior to rule utilitarianism. 2. To begin, I will be defining both act and rule utilitarianism. In act utilitarianism, you determine the morality of an act by measuring the pleasures and pains for a specific situation Angeles 326). Act utilitarians take into consideration only those affected in the specific situation. However, rule utilitarianism determines the morality of an act according to the good or bad consequences that ensue from following a general moral rule of conduct... (Angeles 326). Good examples of those general moral rules are phrases like, never steal or never tell a lie. In any situation, people can use either act or rule utilitarianism to determine the correct course of action. 3. Now, I will use a hypothetical situation to describe both act and rule ... In applying the above theories to the movie Sleepless in Seattle, the communication privacy management theory appears several times throughout the film. Sam s words are constantly on Annie s mind and she begins to wonder if Sam is possibly her soul mate. With Walter she has a thick, impenetrable wall that is holding in her deep secrets. At one point, she hides in a closet one night while Walter is sleeping so she can listen to Sam speaking on the radio. • 36. Boeing Company Case Study For centuries, companies have faced many diversity problems. Boeing is a prime example of how a company faces diversity and how the company handles the situation. Boeing has been facing diversity challenges since the company opened their doors to the public and government contract work. The discrimination of African Americans and women drove Boeing to a couple lawsuits. Diversity can either destroy a company if the situation is not handled correctly, or it can make a company stronger and the business can thrive from past mistakes. • 41. Depiction Of Gladiator A True Depiction of a Gladiator There have been many movies that try to demonstrate how gladiators trained for their violent combat against other gladiators, in hope to win and keep their lives at the end of their gruesome battles. Although, the 1960 s movie Spartacus, with Kirk Douglas, had a few differences demonstrating how actual gladiators trained in Rome, it still contains more accurate scenes displaying their intense training. The movie showed the kind of training schools they were in, the armor used, and the styles of fighting that they practiced to prepare these men, as they did hundreds of years ago in Rome. To begin with, around 264 BC the gladiator games were introduced in Rome, called Munera. These games were initially hosted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Rome, there were around 30 different gladiators that were experts with the different shields, weapons, and armor. There were the elite gladiators, who were freed and decided to remain as gladiators. Then there were heavily armed gladiators that had a lot of armor and were protected, but had very little movement when fighting. Finally, there were the lightly armed gladiators, they had little to no armor, but had the ability to move more freely when fighting. The armor used during their practices was wooden swords and shields instead of real equipment, for the protection of the gladiators, the soldiers, and trainers who worked there. When it was time for a match the gladiators would use real swords, shields, and sometimes armor to battle (Types of Gladiators). The gladiators also were used to represent strong gods by the way they were dressed and the weapons they used. For instance, there were unusual weapons, such as a trident, used by the god Neptune, and the use of a net to follow the water god theme (Retiarri). Unlike in actual gladiator schools, in the movie, it did not seem to have the men separated by their specialty but they all train together. Spartacus, and the other gladiators did train using wooden swords and shields. There was a scene were Spartacus had to actually fight till the death with another gladiator from the school, because some wealthy government men and their wives came to Ludi Gladiatorium and wanted to see a fight. They paid a high percentage of money to make this happen, since it was not allowed to fight these gladiators till death in the schools. Spartacus was given a short sword and a shield, while his opponent was given a fish net and a trident to battle. Although, Spartacus did not win that fight because his opponent spared his life, the man did unfortunately get murdered on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Relationship Between Child Support And Child Relationship Parent to Child Relationship Analyzed by Child Support and Disconnection I am writing about the topic of how child support can affect the relationship a parent feels towards their child. In a sense that it can make the parent feel as if the child is an expense. As something they have to constantly keep up with like a phone bill or water bill. I chose this topic because I feel that there is a disconnection between parents that are required to pay child support toward their child. Those parents paying child support in most instances are only allowed to see their child for a certain period of time. That being a weekend or every other weekend. If not at all in the most extreme cases. This disconnection in turn can lead to a broken relationship between the parent and the child. The parent is seen as a negative figure by the child whereas the parent sees the child as an expense. Which can lead to other negative impacts between the family. The parent with full custody or majority custody is a better able to raise the child and instill negative feelings about the other parent into the child. What is significant and interesting about this particular field of inquiry that this is constantly happening in modern time. As seen through high levels of divorce, custody battles, and parents that are required to pay child support on a monthly basis. At times the other parent with majority custody can even be better off as they are receiving another check while the parent required to pay child support is at times struggling to get by. Needless to say that the parent required to pay child support is at fault and put themselves in the situation in the first place. The challenges I expect to face while researching are unscholarly resources in which frustrated parents post on online websites. Even though these experiences may be first hand insights they are most likely posted to unscholarly websites which cannot be used for this essay. A possible thesis is, child support leads to a broken relationship between a parent and a child with the cause of future disconnection. The research question being, Does child support make a parent feel like their child is an expense that leads to disconnection? With many answers surrounding this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
