Unethical Banana Commodity Chain
Bananas are a common household fruit in North American and European homes. However, by buying
bananas consumers are supporting an unethical banana commodity chain. Banana plantation workers
are paid unfair wages, prevented from unionizing, and are exposed to toxic pesticides in the
workplace. After examining the harmful aspects of labour in the banana commodity chain, consumers
ethical obligations towards buying bananas must be taken into account. Do consumers hold an ethical
duty to ensure that their produce is produced fairly? If yes, how can they act on these duties? Based on
Utilitarian ethics, Unger and Singer would argue that a banana consumer should make the decision
that does the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people ... Show more content on

I am glad to change the way I consume and to take steps to improve the lives of banana plantation
workers. After writing my commodity chain report I began to incorporate some of these obligations
into my life. I have stopped buying bananas and I am learning to grow my own produce to ensure that
the food I am eating is ethically produced. My actions however, do not fully respond to the analyzed
ethical actions as I do not have extra money to donate to charities, which the Utilitarian approach
would encourage me to do, nor do I have the time as a student to dedicate myself to positive duties
like petitioning or contacting elected officials like the rights based approach would encourage me to
do. However, I am proud to know that by growing my own produce instead of buying bananas that I

The Role of Team Process on Competitive Intelligence...
Teams in the organization are most important part of an organization . The most significant effect on
team success is team processes. The effectiveness of team process is obtained as most members in the
team are pioneers in every hard side or soft side of the team processes. This orientation shows
members corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility (CSR).
CSR is a value that organizations can use to build relationships among organizational members along
the organizational structural pyramid. Leaders of the organization will be more open for upward
influence and subordinates will be more inspired and motivated to exert upward influence.
On the basis of CSR and upward influence behavior, competitive intelligence plays not only a tactical
role but a strategic role as well. So, in this paper we are discussing the role of team process on
competitive intelligence scanning in hospitals in Vietnam.
For about half a century all the hospitals in Vietnam are state owned . The common scene then in the
hospitals was that the team processes are brand centered which affects the quality of service. then the
condition changes , domestic private hospitals emerged and the public become more educated and
more concerned about their health which demands high quality service provision which needs high
managerial attention.
CSR is an important factor between companies and their stakeholders . CSR is concerned with the
commitment of companies to contribute to

The Discount Travel Websites Of Kayak.com And Sidestep.com
With the country in the financial shape that it is presently in, consumers are looking for any and every
way to save a buck. Therefore, thoughts of a recession on the horizon makes travelers reconsider their
summer vacations. This brings up methods that families and the like can still have some form of
vacation. Enter the discount travel websites of Kayak.com and Sidestep.com. Before making a
comparison, it is best to take a look at both sites individually. Kayak Kayak.com is a website that
enables potential travelers the opportunity to search for flights, hotels, cars, and cruises from one
convenient site. This eliminates the need for a consumer to visit multiple sites to gather this
information. It also offers deals that are available for users to take advantage. One is able to look at
pricing for any flight available to a destination, and is able to check the price for it on several different
sites, including Orbitz, CheapTickets, and even the airline itself. This site offers a listing, a matrix, and
a chart in which to view the selected flights. For hotels it offers a listing, a map, or photos. The other
unique thing about the site it that it has sliders allow one to move them left or right to narrow the
options. One also can remove check marks to omit specific carriers or star rating from the search
results. The one downside of using this for flights is that it does not include Southwest Airlines in
search results. Sidestep Sidestep.com is another website that

A Cultural Analysis Of Reproduction By Emily Martin
Alyce Barner Professor: Dr. Towghi GWS 111.2 11 August 2016 The Woman in the Body: A Cultural
Analysis of Reproduction Emily Martin Anthropologist Emily Martins book The Woman in the Body:
A Cultural Analysis of Reproduction is an ethnographic study of male oriented metaphors for women s
reproductive processes and women s real thoughts about those processes through interviews. Martin
and her assistants interviewed 165 African American and white women, regarding three stages of life
starting with the earliest in woman s life being puberty, then childbearing, and final stages of
reproduction cessation being menopause. 57% of the interviewees were middle class, and 43% of her
interviewees were women from the working class. One of the dangers Martin found studying women
in American society, was women talking about and reading medical text that described uterine
contractions during childbirth as separate, as though contractions were outside of themselves and labor
is something women actively go through. Reading descriptions in medical texts, Martin wondered
how male oriented views from textbooks matched so cohesively with those of the interviewees. After
some research, Martin realized the thought process of woman during labor matched the text book
definitions due the definitions men witnessed during childbirth and illustrated in text books and
woman culturally internalized and learned through ideology as a description of contractions vs. giving
birth. Martin discovered

Being A Sex Worker, By George Bernard Shaw
Is morality really as clear cut and defined as we may perceive it to be? Most would agree that things
along the lines of murder and rape are clearly immoral and despicable, but what about prostitution? In
modern society, the word prostitute might understandably bring many negative connotations to one s
mind pimps... sexual abuse...slavery, even especially considering the vast options women in the
modern workforce have. One could also assume that no one would ever want to become willful sex
worker, but some may see it as a necessary evil to provide for themselves. In Victorian Society, being
a sex worker may have been one of the few options open to women of the lower or working class to
survive without being forced into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, after Vivie learns that her mother is still actively involved in her business, she refuses to
accept any more money and unsympathetically cut ties with her. She tells her mother We must part. It
will not make much difference to us: instead of meeting one another for perhaps a few months in
twenty years, we shall never meet: that s all (Shaw Act IV). To some degree, her opposition to living
off the money that is the product of prostitution is honorable and some might see her as an example of
the superior moral figure in the play. Vivie clearly has an outstanding moral issue with the business
her mother is involved in but is that really fair of her? She seems to suffer from what Jesse Prinz
describes in The Death of Morality, as a culturally conditioned response (Philosophy Now). Jesse
essentially states that morality is merely a response to the cultural mass point of view. He states,
people make moral judgments even when they cannot provide any justification for them (Philosophy
Now). It s interesting that Vivie feels so strongly about her mother s business practices considering
that she herself is a cultural outcast as a young, educated, woman that has no ambition to marry or
have children, and wants to make her own money. Without her mother s efforts to put her through
school, what other opportunities would Vivie

Wall Street Journal Analysis
Paper #3
The third paper is an analysis and my thoughts on The Wall Street Journal article by Bob Tita titled A
New Approach to New Products. The article focuses on open innovation and rapid prototyping as
characteristics of the innovative company FirstBuild. This paper discusses these two characteristics in
the context of DoD materiel acquisition. Prototyping has long been recognized as a low cost technique
to test initial concepts and ideas about a product meet user requirements. In some instances and over
time, the cost for building prototypes has not been low and the time has been unacceptable, which is
why 3D printing has become so popular. Prototyping has now regained its value in the development
cycle due to 3D printing. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of our meetings in DoD do not meet any standard metrics for productivity according to much of
the best practices of management so experimenting with them seems only an opportunity for
improvement. I have experimented with multiple aspects of meetings to include their duration, their
location, setting the agenda with one or two questions to drive discussion versus a straight transmittal
of information format, and with meeting attendees. The result has been a consistent push back to
changing such aspects of the meeting and very little desire for consideration of other ways of
accomplishing the purpose of the meeting. Some don t even want to spend the time thinking critically
about the purpose of a meeting in order to identify alternative solutions. This is worrisome to me
because if we cannot experiment with simple aspects of our daily business, the possibility of
experimenting with different equipment or organizational structures seems like a significant leap for
some of our

Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)
A recently graduated working paramedic is referred to as an Advanced Care Paramedic, or an ACP. An
ACP follows a clinical structure, the first aspect of the format is called a primary survey which
collects all emergency patient information. This compulsory technique aims to identify and control
catastrophic medical events to ensure patients have the best outcome possible (Hodegetts et al., 2011).
When conducting a primary survey of a patient an ACP would follow the basic structure of danger,
response, airway, breathing and circulation; usually shortened into the acronym DRABC (Woo, 2000).
To begin the primary survey, DRABC should be started as soon as possible (QAS reference). It is

Thus Paramedics Australasia devised an introduction to the clinical role of a paramedic, although
slight variations in differing jurisdictions. Under Paramedics Australasia a paramedic is a health
professional that provides emergency medical treatment and assessment, rapid patient response in an
out of hospital setting (Paramedics.org, 2016) It is important for paramedics not to exceed their scope
of practice as the patient outcome is significantly decreased, a multidisciplinary view on the care
being provided is negatively affected which in turn ensures non informed decisions are being made for
the patient unknowingly (Paramedics.org, 2011). If a graduated paramedic exceeds their scope of
practice, patient outcomes become substandard to the care they could provide within their scope of

Matthew And Quran Essay
The Gospel of Matthew and the Qur an describe Jesus in similar ways, but also in many different
ways. When talking about Jesus, the Qur an describes him as a prophet. what was given to Moses and
Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of
them... (2:136). Jesus is just like any other prophet. There s nothing extra special about him. He even
gets compared to the other prophets who are killed by Israel.
But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel]... you denied and
another party you killed (2:87). In contrast, while the Qur an denies Jesus of any special status,
including him being the Son of God (19:35), the Bible confirms he is the Son of God. In Matthew

First, Jesus did big miracles, even in the Qur an. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to
the dead (3:49). The Qur an doesn t go into detail of what Jesus did, but the Bible does. Matthew 9
alone, is full of so many miracles that Jesus performed. In Matthew 9, he heals a paralyzed man, heals
a sick woman, raises a girl from the dead, heals two blind men, and casts demons out of a possessed
man. Another similarity is Jesus being the light in the world. The Qur an talks about how he was sent
down to mankind a light (4:124) and it doesn t specifically say Jesus was the light in Matthew, but it
does say that at one point his face shined like the sun and his clothes became white as light (Matthew
17:2). The only other light that Matthew talks about is in Jesus sermon on the Mount, he preaches
about how the people are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14 16). Now, Jesus does claim to be the
light of the world in John 8 and 9, which could be where the writer of the Qur an got this idea from
since Islam is younger Christianity (this is speaking away from

The Cause And Effects Of Climate Change And Its Causes
Natural disasters have killed more than 600,000 people and left behind trillions of dollars in damages
in the last two decades, the United Nations said Monday. (Chan) Extreme weather has caused millions
of casualties and extreme damages over the years, but lately there has been an increase in severe
weather events. This is causing problems in the US, with the amount of tornadoes rising in tornado
alley Tennessee experienced a 67 percent increase in tornado activity in 1983 2013 compared to the
1954 1983 time period. Oklahoma experienced a nearly 35 percent decrease in tornadoes in 1983 2013
compared to 1954 1983.
Climate change is defined as a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change
apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of
atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. Climate change has happened as a
cycle throughout history, with ice ages occurring, and then warming. The earth naturally warms and
cools, but due to the burning of fossil fuels the rate is growing exponentially.
The climate changing was first suspected in the 19th century when scientists in britain debated
whether Europe was covered by ice in the past. Guy S Callender suggested that the warming trend
revealed in the 19th century had been caused by a 10% increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide from
the burning of fossil fuels. (Harding) The debate intensified by 2005 when a study was published

The Importance Of Feudalism In Europe
Real Draft Feudalism in Europe during the middle ages came out of the necessity for both order and
protection from the attacks and raids of the Vikings or Germanic warriors who traveled and pillaged
Europe around the 5th to the 11th century. The Roman Empire s destruction in the 5th century A.D.,
along with rulers failing to maintain their authority and rule allowed nobles and those in power to take
more power of the areas that were under them. The people s protections that were more common
under a centralized government, as in the times of the Roman Empire vanished. As such, the peasants
and the lower class found it necessary to negotiate with local rulers for security from enemy forces.
This system included lords and serfs. Now, the nobles were stark contrasts to the peasants. Nobles
exercised greater power economically, politically, and in other areas. Serfs could include servants, and
peasant farmers. A lord could give land to these people in exchange for protection. This process of
giving land as payment or reward was also known as a fief. In order to recognize the importance of
how the feudal system came to be, as well as analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, we must go back
in time to briefly see how the Roman Empire governed. In the Roman Empire, there were
opportunities for aspiring men to achieve a better life. A main example is seen through their governing
system. During this time, Curus Honorum was in effect. This was designed for Roman senators.

Christian Leadership Philosophy
The word leadership is defined as a person who directs or guides someone and has the ability to
influence or have an impact on their lives. Christian leadership is distinctively different from other
major leadership conceptions such as instructional, transactional, and transformational leadership
conceptions. Those who live as humble servants of Christ, should assume the position of leadership in
any given community such as CBU s International Service Program (ISP), because you can turn
someone s life around just by your actions and you will be setting an example for believers. In Mark
16:15 Jesus said, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Doing ISP plays a role in
leadership and you would be doing what God s calling all believers to do. In John 10:11 Jesus
declares, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Within this
verse, we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. Jesus is referring to us as sheep, He was not
speaking in affectionate terms. In the bible, sheep rank among the dumbest animals in creation. The
shepherd is the leader of the herd, without him, the sheep are lost, confused, and disoriented. The
shepherd leads, feeds, nurtures, comforts, corrects, and protects his heard. The shepherd of the Lord s
flocks leads by modeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Q: The theory of evolution by natural selection requires variability of a given trait. Why is variability

Darwin s theory of evolution and natural selection came about when he visited the Galapagos Island
and discovered that there were animals of all different types living there. While he was on the island,
he seen a variety of Finches that contained a wide range of phenotypes which happened to be linked to
their survival. On a certain part of the island he found a finche specie that adapted to their

Examples Of Discrimination In Philadelphia
Discrimination is the action of treating people unequally or harassing people mostly based on

nationality, region or as shown in Philadelphia movie sexual orientation and people with disease. This
paper focusses on sexual oriented discrimination and discrimination against people with diseases like
AIDS with the example out of the Philadelphia movie.
Since society is apt to exclude different people than usual, because of their sexual orientations,
homosexuals are discriminated in society. They get fired from their jobs, got attacked and even they
can get killed just for being homosexual. In Philadelphia movie, Andrew Beckett the gay lawyer keeps

Job Enrichment and Job Enlargement
Job enrichment and job enlargement
Job Enrichment should be distinguished from enlargement job enlargement attempts to make a job
more varied by removing the dullness associated with performing repetitive operations. In job
enrichment, the attempt is to build in to jobs a higher sense of challenge and achievement. The
accumulation of achievement must lead to a felling of personal growth accompanied by a sense of
responsibility.
The goal of job enrichment is not merely to make the more varied but I the words of M.Scoot myers

2. Cost: Thought a great many companies appear to be interested in job enrichment programs, the
extra cost may seem high if a company is not convinced that the return will at least offset the increase
expenditure. General Motors tried six man and three man teams in the assembly line but from that
they found the work shoed and cost increased. At Saab Volvo and motors India. It was found that
increase cost is compensated by reduced absenteeism and labour turnover. Yet the cost of the
programme is formidable factor.
3. Attitude of managers: Another problem is the tendency of top managers and personal specialist to
apply their own scale people s personalities. As a result a few companies have abandoned or modified
their programs. M.Scott Myers belives that the failures have occurred because the manager were not
really committed to theory Y and in most cases job enrichment is usually imposed on people . They
are told about it rather than consulted.
4. Attitude of Workers: The attitude of some employers also represent obstacles. Various surveys of

Literary Analysis: The Red Tent The author and her times Anita Diamant, author of the historic fiction
novel, The Red Tent, is a devout Jewish American living in Newtonville, Massachusetts with her
husband and daughter, Emilia. She has written five books about contemporary Jewish life, The Red
Tent being her first novel. Diamant may have been influenced by the recent resurgence of creating
Midrashim, or stories that attempt to explain the Torah by examining its subtexts. Modern women
have taken a keen interest in this practice, hoping to expand on the minute biblical mentions of women
like Dinah. Form, structure and plot The Red Tent is organized in a seemingly complicated yet

The only physical description of Dinah is quite vague: #8216; #8230;the dark eyed girl with the curly
hair and the fine hands #8230; #8217; (Diamant 189). She was a mid eastern girl, but little else is said
of her appearance. Dinah #8217;s character is essential to the novel, as it is a chronicle of her life. She
is the heart and soul of the story. Through her the reader experiences one of the oldest stories of all
time, Genesis, through the eyes of someone who was painfully obscure for thousands of years. A
simple description of her own name best describes Dinah #8217;s character: Maybe you heard it in the
music of my name: the first vowel high and clear, as when a mother calls to her child at dusk; the
second sound soft, for whispering secrets on pillows (Diamant 1). Even so early in the novel, before
the actual story begins, Diamant establishes a maternal element in Dinah. Whispering secrets proves to
be an important element in Dinah #8217;s life, as the secrets of women are passed from mother to
daughter in a never ending cycle of life and love. In concordance with the importance placed on
mothers in The Red Tent, Dinah #8217;s most prominent mother figures, Leah and Rachel, are
instrumental to the plot. When the story begins (i.e. when Jacob arrives), the sisters are fourteen and
twelve. They are followed to their deaths, which, although unsaid, would be thought to be in

The Successes of Progressive Era Reformers
The Progressive movement was very influential in many ways to early twentieth century America.
Businesses became safer, and much more respectful towards their employees. Society accepted moral
changes, and became safer communities. The government was affected by the Progressive movement
becoming much more democratic, and caring more for the needs of its people. The Progressive

Progressives knew of the terrible conditions that many laborers were going through in factories and
workplaces across America, and they rose up to the challenge of fighting against them. While
Progressives reformers worked for change in many different areas, the improvement of society was
one of their most important goals. In terms of society, Progressive reformers wanted to focus on three
specific areas. These areas were education, sanitation in tenements or housing, and conservation of the
environment (heritage.org). Progressives wanted education to be based on hands on learning, and that
experience is the best teacher (Hayes). John Dewey and some others created a form of Progressive
education that was based on teaching young kids how to live along with other knowledge (Hayes).
Sanitation for many of the crowded tenements in urban areas was lacking (Caswell). Muckraker Jacob
Riis looked to change this and with the publishing of his book How the Other Half Lives (1890), New
York and some other states began to pass building safety codes such as the New York State Tenement

The Old Testament Essay
Introduction
The Old Testament can be very hard for many people to look to for guidance. The difficulty often
comes because the questions they have in today s society may not relate to the Old Testament. Much
biblical scholarship is narrowly historical critical and does not seek to draw out the ethical theological
dimensions of the text. (297) Pastors have the task of relating the Old Testament to today s problems
and it can be quite a challenge. Addressing moral issues is a difficult issue that pastors are faced with
when addressing them through the Old Testament. This article addresses many factors that contribute
to pastors not effectively addressing morals because of the complexity of relating them to Old
Testament context.
Article Summary
Terence E. Fretheim speaks from a perspective that shows the challenges that pastors face in regard to
morality in today s society and how it compares to the Old Testament. He points out that pastors often
overlook these aspects:
1. Our world raises many ethical issues that the Bible does not reference. 2. Scripture works with
many perspectives that have little if any pertinence to today s world, from the treatment of women and
slaves to serve punishments. 3. The Old Testament especially is thought to be problematic ethically
and hence is less helpful than the New Testament, through New Testament violence finally exceeds
that of the Old Testament. 4. Questions arise about the authority and consequent use of the Bible.

Psychological Factors Affecting Social Isolation
Social Isolation Social isolation may be defined as the absence of social interaction, contacts, and
relationships with family and friends, with neighbors on an individual level, and with society at large
on a broader level. Social isolation is considered a risk factor in the development of disease and the
disabilities that can occur in the course of an existing disease. Social support may be defined as the
resources provided by other persons including emotional social, physical, financial, and other types of
care (Institute of Medicine, 1992). Social isolation may be measured by the strength of an older person
s existing social network. The absence or weakness of the social support network forms the basis for
identifying individuals who are socially isolated. According to Krishnamoorthi (2011) social isolation
of the chronically ill and elderly is a costly problem. When the unmanaged chronic illness of the
socially isolated becomes acutely worsened, mortality rates are higher and serious functional and
mental debilitation requires total care from the system. Data indicates there is an increased risk that
social isolation silently has for acute and chronic disease. Researchers have found that the absence of
social relationships or those of low quality are independent predictors of all cause mortality, even
when controlling for baseline health status. Animal studies have found that social isolation lead to
stressful biochemistry, through elevation of the

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
In Technology, Inequality, and Underdevelopment: The case of Latin America Rodrigo Arocena and
Peter Senker lay out the realities of why there is economic inequality and thus a lack of technological
advancement in Latin America. Arocena and Senker argue that economic inequality is the main
driving factor behind underdevelopment and a lack of technological change in Latin America. One of
the major factors for the lack of technological change in Latin America is the lack of research and
development (R D). While globally R D decreased between the mid 1980 s ... Show more content on

They explain that during the last half of the nineteenth century, an outward oriented period of growth
started in Latin America, based on the export of raw materials to emerging industrial nations. Unlike
the ruling classes in other parts of the world, the so called oligarchic order in Latin America
concentrated the resulting large surplus in the hands of small traditional elites who imitated the
consumption patterns of European upper classes, rather than seeking to enhance their countries
education, technology and production infrastructure (Arocena and Senker 2003). In the late 1950s and
early 1960s, industrialization failed to reach a point at which it was self sustaining. While there were
plants and factories in Latin America that could produce consumer goods, only a comparatively small
wealthy segment of the population could afford to purchase these consumer goods as opposed to the
large segment of the United States and West Europe populations. This restricted expansion of the
internal market for manufactured consumer durables, and the expansion of manufacturing
employment. Accordingly this did little or nothing to reduce inequality. Industrialization produced by
inward investment and by internal consumption of expensive products could only be sustained in
Latin America in a period when external funding was easy to obtain. This came to an end with the debt
crisis of the 1980s. Latin

according to the rankings of the top food producers in the world. Looking at specific countries and

The countries are ranked on how well their nation is doing with each specific development index. The

the key aspects of Human Development listed above. Although the three indicators of development are
an effective way of seeing the true development of a country the one important thing that it doesn t
cover is the gross domestic product which really shows a countries social well being and economic
development. While the GDP has its strengths it also has its weakness because its quality is not
computed and distributive aspects are ignored. Social well being can often be described as the GDP of
a country but even though the U.S is ranked number one in the world in GDP it is still not the top

Eastern and Western Religions Essay
The Soul According to Eastern amp; Western Religions The idea of the soul varies widely in religious
tradition. While these variations exist, its basic definition is unvarying. The soul can be described as
the ultimate internal principle by which we think, feel, and will, and by which our bodies are
animated. The soul is seen as the core principle of life or as the essence of a being 1. Views on the
permanence of the soul vary throughout religious tradition as well. While some view it as a mortal
entity in flux others believe the soul is an immortal and permanent unit. These interpretations vary

Hinduism believes that realizing the soul is the embodiment of Brahman is essential to being released
from the cycle of rebirth, Samsara. Hindus understand that the soul, atman, is permanent and only
inhabits a physical shell which dies and passes the soul on to the next mortal shell, which can be better
or worse than the previous depending on karma. With that said, Hindus believe in rebirth until one
realizes the ultimate divine at which point they would be free from the punarjanma, the transmigration
of the soul, liberating their souls to achieve moksha. Buddhism, on the other hand, challenges Atman
with the belief in Anatman, which is non self. Buddhists believe that the world is constantly changing,
nullifying the concept of the permanent soul, Atman. There is no reason the soul remains unchanged
in a perpetually changing environment. Anatman is the idea of no permanent soul 3. A common
misconception is that Anatman means people have no soul. In reality it describes the constant change
of the soul during its time on earth. Buddhism holds that while there is no soul, the five elements that
make up an individual orient themselves to form a new individual. With each cycle of rebirth, these
aggregates, which include mind, consciousness, body, impulse, and feeling, will combine differently
to form distinct individuals 4. While Buddhists believe in karma, a summation of positive and
negative actions, they

Railway Labor Act Essay
Railway Labor Act and Impact on Modern Day Airlines For decades, the railroad industry was in a
period of great economic political, and industrial changes in the United States. The industrial boom
was taking its toll on the United States, and the widespread violent work stoppages were detrimental
to the railroad industry due to tensions escalating between unions and workers. President Calvin
Coolidge was strongly vocal about the issue and urged railroads and unions to recommend legislation
to improve relations and ultimately reduce the threat of any railroad shutdowns. As a response,
railroads and unions immediately drafted legislation, which in hopes would improve labor and union
relations. On May 20, 1029, President Coolidge signed and designated the new law as the Railway
Labor Act of 1926. Coined one of the most significant and longest lasting pieces of legislation, the
Railway Labor Act provides a mechanism through which labor disputes between railroads and
currently airlines, could be handled in a peaceful, non disruptive manner. The Railway Labor Act of
1926 is unique unlike other legislations because it ensures no interruption to commerce, provides an
unhindered right of employees to join a labor union, guarantees independence of an organization to
enact the RLA, assists in work rules and working conditions, and assists in a prompt and orderly
settlement of disputes. The Railway Labor Act is certainly different due to the relationship of labor

I ll never let go, Jack. I promise. One of the greatest movies of all time stars the best actor ever,
Leonardo DiCaprio. He has obsessive compulsive disorder, but is still one of the greatest actors. If
something was hard, he worked even harder to do it perfectly. Even if his disorder disrupted him and
his fellow co workers, he worked through those difficult times to get the job done. Obsessive
compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, is an anxiety disorder which involves obsessions,
compulsions, and can also consume a person s everyday life (Steketee 1). Compulsions are obsessions
performed into ritualistic behaviors (Parks 11). They can lead a person to have very vicious cycles in
which they are powerless to stop. Obsessions most of the time revolves around fears of germs in
which they avoid using public toilets and touching items. This can get so extreme to where they will
wash their hands so many times their skin will be raw, and they will shower so much their bodies will
start bleeding or chapping (12). There are many symptoms of having OCD. For example, sufferers can
avoid situations that involve obsessions, overestimating harm, and worrying excessively. Sufferers of
OCD can have multiple fears such as hurting loved ones, using sharp objects near people, not counting
high enough which would cause a natural disaster, and throwing items away (12).

Throughout the American History, Americans had constantly settled on agreements on how slavery

Marked Woman Deborah Tannen Summary
Marked Women
In Deborah Tannen s article There is No Unmarked Woman she focuses on how women are being
misconceived and prejudged on solely the way they re dressed. The main point in the article is that
there is no such thing as an unmarked woman men have the option and women simply do not. To be
marked in the way Tannen states it is changing the meaning of a word by simply adding a participle,
but that participle has no meaning on its own. Deborah Tannen points out that even in the English
language marked is a staple of linguistic theory. By simply adding a linguistic participle to a word that
already has no meaning by itself can change the meaning of a word. As Tannen states in her article
that women must make a decision on how they wish to appear on a day to day basis through their
makeup, hair style, shoes, clothes, etc. When women are choosing how to appear everyday they re
trying to escape the preconceptions that men never really have to face due to more narrow decisions.
Tannen makes a good statement when she refers to the research of Ralph Fasold in which men are
actually marked. Fasold points out that girls are born with fully female bodies, while boys are born
with modified female bodies. Tannen writes. In conclusion Tannen says how she s upset the ... Show

Summary Of Rhetorical Strategies
Many authors have found that persuading an audience is sometimes the easiest way to grasp the

based around personal opinions, understanding the initial reasons for using these strategies can explain
why they are used. Based on my research these rhetorical strategies can be found throughout all three

Value Proposition Of Fedex
Logistics services in the supply chain can be considered as a service offering, with numerous logistics
companies competing to offer comparable services to many of the same consumers. As consumers
hunt for potential providers in this extremely competitive marketplace, logistics service suppliers
should discover approaches to distinguish themselves and their service offerings so as to help them
compete. One established method for companies to differentiate themselves is by building strong
brands. For instance, FedEx has evidently distinguished itself through successful brand management.
The brand value to consumers is usually signify as consumer based equity which happens when
consumers possess a high level of familiarity and awareness with the brand and retains some strong,
constructive and inimitable brand associations in memory (Davis, 2003). Brand awareness is referred

as a brand that is strongly linked with that value proposition. Other brands such as Airborne Express

they do not possess levels of brand equity equivalent to FedEx because their brands are not as

The Human Eye Is A Perfect Well Designed Optical System
Abstract
According to the report for the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, at least 1.5 million Americans
weakened their vision due to use of technology. However, thanks to advanced technology and
innovation people can choose between glasses and contacts as a therapy for improving their eyesight.
Contact lenses have become the fastest progressing medical devices in optometry and have seen a
number of significant improvements and developments since its existence (Schaeffer, 2011).
According to Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, the first plastic contact lenses were
produced between 1938 1940 in the United States and the first soft lenses came later in the 70s.

Perovic had. I did not want to look anything like her! First day of school was right around the corner
and as I was getting ready for it questions kept circulating in my mind. What would my friends think?
I was the only one with glasses. How would I play sports with glasses? Would I still get invited to
birthday parties? Will boys like me? Some of my friends thought my glasses were cool, but deep
inside I knew they were just trying to make me feel good. I still got invited to the parties, but boys did
not like me. But all of that did not bother me as much. What bothered me the most is that I could not
play sports with my glasses. They kept slipping from my nose or falling off my face on the ground
whenever I tried jumping or doing cartwheels. I thought my life would never be the same.
¬ Loss of vision can happen at any age, even at birth, it is not only geriatric condition. With increased
use of technology people s eyesight gets worse causing eyestrain, loss of vision and other problems.
More than 30 million people in the U.S. wear contact lenses due to eye conditions such as myopia,
hyperopia, keratoconus, astigmatism, or presbyopia (Ţălu et al., 2011). Though contact lenses seem to
be a recent phenomenon, the famous Italian architect, mathematician and inventor Leonardo da Vinci
(1452 1519) produced the first known sketches for it five hundred years ago (Siviglia, 2010). This

The Mexica Empire against Hernan Cortes Essay
The Totonacs joined forces with Cortes against the emperor and his allies. Other neighboring towns
that resented the deplorable Aztec hegemony stopped paying tribute as a gesture of support for the
Spanish. As a response, those in power at Tenochtitlán sent forces to Cempoala to punish the defiance
but the Spanish with newly acquired allies defeated the advancing army (Castillo). It was here at
Cempoala that the Spanish would meet the Tlaxcalans for the very first time, prompting a standoff
between the two. Openly opposing the Mexica empire, the Tlaxcalans were a force to be reckoned
with since they had twice prevented Aztec domination (Portilla) and were suspicious of the Spanish at
first especially when the conquistadors accepted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conquistadors defeated the warriors of the Mexica empire due to a number of reasons that not
only pertain to the weapons they possessed. Interestingly enough, all the steel and horses contributed
to the physical aspect of war but on a psycho social level, it was the Aztecs varying conception of
warfare that led to Spanish victory. Conquistadors were taught to fight to the death and move on to the
next one while the Aztecs would focus a large amount of energy to capturing and taking prisoners
(Brandt). Whether it was for personal reasons or the desire for human sacrifice, this concept impeded
their chances of winning battles. Isolation can be noted as a small factor as well since the Aztecs kept
their empire confined to the continent and never branched out to discover new technology.
The Spanish on the other hand had a very strong background in exploration with ties to naval and
advanced military tactics. These men were cogs in a powerful war machine that was the reason
Charles V had so much land and power. With exploration comes new discovery such as new weapons
and advancements in warfare. In every way possible, Spanish military dominance consisting of steel,
cavalry, and gunpowder was underlying reason the natives never stood a chance.
Toledo steel fashioned into swords, spears, and pikes were the bread and butter of the

Essay On The Role Of Coach Winning In Sports
What drives a coach winning or the development of players? We as coaches have taken on a role of
responsibility that means a lot to athletes, families and communities. Playing athletics of any sort will
teach you many life lessons. But within any work force, you have to produce or make some form of
progress. With that being said a major factor when it comes to coaching is, what do you value more?
The development of your players or winning games to look good or satisfy some internal drive? Since
I have been enrolled in graduate school and taking classes on how to become a better coach. The first
step a coach should take to prepare themselves is developing a coaching philosophy. A coaching
philosophy will help put ideas and thoughts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an ideal topic when talking about coaching and what is valued more
In the clash of coaching philosophies in youth soccer winning vs development they talk about how the
majority of the time the pressure to win comes from the parents and coaches that have limited
knowledge. They stated that focusing too much on winning will hurt younger athletes as they get
older. In our culture today they will praise the winners and no one remembers the losers. The article
ultimately sums up that the coach s main goal should be the development of their players and winning
later.
After reading this article I find it very helpful on how it pertains to the topic of this paper. The point of
this research is to find the drive that a coach has. This article mainly pointed out younger children in
the sport of soccer and the concepts could clearly be used for any sport.
As time has progressed the legal and ethical responsibilities of a coach can be tied into their title and
how it affects their position. Rich Engelhorn of Iowa State University touched on many ideas that a
coach has to take into consideration. He states a coach s legal duties are being knowledgeable,
providing a safe environment, adequate supervision of athletes, etc. The ethical responsibilities of
coach are but not limited to, encouraging development, participation, and most importantly; the goal is
to win, but to win the correct way. Never sacrifice character for the win.
He then goes on to say A program should

Literary Devices In Medea
When Love Backfires
Euripides Medea is a tragic play that takes place in Corinth, Greece. It was first produced in 431 BC.
It was during this time that Corinth and Athens were rivals, fighting to have the upper hand. In fact,
Corinth and Sparta teamed together against Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. Like
most literature, Euripides Medea incorporates the period in which it was written along with a timeless
theme. Euripdes uses the literary devices of setting, irony, and symbolism to depict the theme of
identity in relation to marriage.
The play Medea uses the setting to help the audience better understand the meaning of the text. What
is said depends greatly on who is around and where the character(s) are. For example, when Medea is
by herself or with the chorus, she is speaking freely of her evil plans, however, when she was in the
presences of Creon or Jason, she lied to their faces. The audience knows what her true thoughts and
feelings are due to the setting. They are not tricked into thinking she has changed her mind but
instead, they know when she is lying based on who she is around. After Medea devised a plan, she
sent for Jason and pleades to him, Jason, I ask you to forgive me for the things I said before. You re
used to putting up with my temper, since so many acts of love have passed between us... (Medea,
870). This quote is a perfect example of how the setting changes the meaning of the words. This helps
portray the overall them of identity. Medea is now full of rage and anger due to her husband leaving
her for another woman. She has lost her sense of identity which was found in her husband. She is a
refugee in Corinth and has no friends or family. She feels completely alone with nowhere else to turn
but to anger and rage.
The literary device of irony is strategically used throughout the entire play. The irony within the text
works in Medea because the audience understands Medea s thoughts and plans while the characters
within the play do not. For instance, Jason says, I will not carry on this quarrel any longer. But if you
want to take me up on my offer of money for the children or your own exile say so, I am ready to be
generous to you... (Medea, 610). What Jason does not

Essay On New Orleans
New Orleans is located in Southeastern Louisiana. The last recording of the population in New
Orleans was in 2013. The population was 378,715. But before that, the population was at 495,080. The
massive decrease in population just one effect of the devastating flood that occurred in 2005. In 2005
the population was 208,508. At that time New Orleans was 287 years old. It was founded in 1718.
New orleans is a subtropical climate with nice year round weather. The weather changes from the mid
50 s in the winter to the mid 90 s in the winter. Rain in New orleans is normal and the monthly
average is about 4 to 5 inches of precipitation. One of the biggest businesses in New Orleans is
Entergy Corporation. That company s assets is $38.69 billion. ... Show more content on

It has housing, hospitals, and school, etc. We have a lot of abandoned buildings in New Orleans
because of the flood, the population dropped so a lot of people didn t go shopping so store owners had
to close their shop. So we decided to renovate them into modern things. Like the Charity Hospital. It is
a million square feet in the middle of the city. We can renovate that into a more modern Charity
Hospital. A Charity Hospital would be best because there are a lot of people that don t have insurance
or a health care provider so they depend on Charity Hospitals. Either that or let there be free health
insurance. Anyway, there are also a lot of residential places in New Orleans so the population is
average. If there is a lot of residentials that means there is a decent amount of children in the city. So
that means there is a lot of schools. But, because of the flood the schools drop with the population. So
lots of kids education was getting messed with. So some of the other abandoned places like the
Lalaurie Mansion can be turned into a kindergarten through 5th grade school. There are a lot more
abandoned buildings and we can fix them or completely changed into something better and more

A Cultural Analysis Of Reproduction By Emily Martin Alyce Barner Professor: Dr. Towghi GWS 111.2 11 August 2016 The Woman in the Body: A Cultural Analysis of Reproduction Emily Martin Anthropologist Emily Martins book The Woman in the Body: A Cultural Analysis of Reproduction is an ethnographic study of male oriented metaphors for women s reproductive processes and women s real thoughts about those processes through interviews. Martin and her assistants interviewed 165 African American and white women, regarding three stages of life starting with the earliest in woman s life being puberty, then childbearing, and final stages of reproduction cessation being menopause. 57% of the interviewees were middle class, and 43% of her interviewees were women from the working class. One of the dangers Martin found studying women in American society, was women talking about and reading medical text that described uterine contractions during childbirth as separate, as though contractions were outside of themselves and labor is something women actively go through. Reading descriptions in medical texts, Martin wondered how male oriented views from textbooks matched so cohesively with those of the interviewees. After some research, Martin realized the thought process of woman during labor matched the text book definitions due the definitions men witnessed during childbirth and illustrated in text books and woman culturally internalized and learned through ideology as a description of contractions vs. giving birth. The result has been a consistent push back to changing such aspects of the meeting and very little desire for consideration of other ways of accomplishing the purpose of the meeting. The Cause And Effects Of Climate Change And Its Causes Natural disasters have killed more than 600,000 people and left behind trillions of dollars in damages in the last two decades, the United Nations said Monday. (Chan) Extreme weather has caused millions of casualties and extreme damages over the years, but lately there has been an increase in severe weather events. This is causing problems in the US, with the amount of tornadoes rising in tornado alley Tennessee experienced a 67 percent increase in tornado activity in 1983 2013 compared to the 1954 1983 time period. Oklahoma experienced a nearly 35 percent decrease in tornadoes in 1983 2013 compared to 1954 1983. Climate change is defined as a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. Climate change has happened as a cycle throughout history, with ice ages occurring, and then warming. The earth naturally warms and cools, but due to the burning of fossil fuels the rate is growing exponentially. The climate changing was first suspected in the 19th century when scientists in britain debated whether Europe was covered by ice in the past. Guy S Callender suggested that the warming trend revealed in the 19th century had been caused by a 10% increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. The Importance Of Feudalism In Europe Real Draft Feudalism in Europe during the middle ages came out of the necessity for both order and protection from the attacks and raids of the Vikings or Germanic warriors who traveled and pillaged Europe around the 5th to the 11th century. The Roman Empire s destruction in the 5th century A.D., along with rulers failing to maintain their authority and rule allowed nobles and those in power to take more power of the areas that were under them. The people s protections that were more common under a centralized government, as in the times of the Roman Empire vanished. As such, the peasants and the lower class found it necessary to negotiate with local rulers for security from enemy forces. This system included lords and serfs. Now, the nobles were stark contrasts to the peasants. Nobles exercised greater power economically, politically, and in other areas. Serfs could include servants, and peasant farmers. A lord could give land to these people in exchange for protection. This process of giving land as payment or reward was also known as a fief. In order to recognize the importance of how the feudal system came to be, as well as analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, we must go back in time to briefly see how the Roman Empire governed. In the Roman Empire, there were opportunities for aspiring men to achieve a better life. A main example is seen through their governing system. During this time, Curus Honorum was in effect. Christian leadership is distinctively different from other major leadership conceptions such as instructional, transactional, and transformational leadership conceptions. Those who live as humble servants of Christ, should assume the position of leadership in any given community such as CBU s International Service Program (ISP), because you can turn someone s life around just by your actions and you will be setting an example for believers. He points out that pastors often overlook these aspects: 1. Our world raises many ethical issues that the Bible does not reference. 2. Scripture works with many perspectives that have little if any pertinence to today s world, from the treatment of women and slaves to serve punishments. 3. The Old Testament especially is thought to be problematic ethically and hence is less helpful than the New Testament, through New Testament violence finally exceeds that of the Old Testament. 4. Psychological Factors Affecting Social Isolation Social Isolation Social isolation may be defined as the absence of social interaction, contacts, and relationships with family and friends, with neighbors on an individual level, and with society at large on a broader level. Social isolation is considered a risk factor in the development of disease and the disabilities that can occur in the course of an existing disease. Social support may be defined as the resources provided by other persons including emotional social, physical, financial, and other types of care (Institute of Medicine, 1992). Social isolation may be measured by the strength of an older person s existing social network. The absence or weakness of the social support network forms the basis for identifying individuals who are socially isolated. According to Krishnamoorthi (2011) social isolation of the chronically ill and elderly is a costly problem. When the unmanaged chronic illness of the socially isolated becomes acutely worsened, mortality rates are higher and serious functional and mental debilitation requires total care from the system. Latin America SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY, INEQUALITY, AND UNDERDEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF LATIN AMERICA AUTHORED BY RODRIGO AROCENA AND PETER SENKER By SEAN PHILLIPS ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY In Technology, Inequality, and Underdevelopment: The case of Latin America Rodrigo Arocena and Peter Senker lay out the realities of why there is economic inequality and thus a lack of technological advancement in Latin America. Arocena and Senker argue that economic inequality is the main driving factor behind underdevelopment and a lack of technological change in Latin America. One of the major factors for the lack of technological change in Latin America is the lack of research and development (R D). While globally R D decreased between the mid 1980 s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They explain that during the last half of the nineteenth century, an outward oriented period of growth started in Latin America, based on the export of raw materials to emerging industrial nations. Unlike the ruling classes in other parts of the world, the so called oligarchic order in Latin America concentrated the resulting large surplus in the hands of small traditional elites who imitated the consumption patterns of European upper classes, rather than seeking to enhance their countries education, technology and production infrastructure (Arocena and Senker 2003). In the late 1950s and early 1960s, industrialization failed to reach a point at which it was self sustaining. While there were plants and factories in Latin America that could produce consumer goods, only a comparatively small wealthy segment of the population could afford to purchase these consumer goods as opposed to the large segment of the United States and West Europe populations. This restricted expansion of the internal market for manufactured consumer durables, and the expansion of manufacturing employment. Accordingly this did little or nothing to reduce inequality. Industrialization produced by inward investment and by internal consumption of expensive products could only be sustained in Latin America in a period when external funding was easy to obtain. This came to an end with the debt crisis of the 1980s. Latin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the GDP has its strengths it also has its weakness because its quality is not computed and distributive aspects are ignored. Social well being can often be described as the GDP of a country but even though the U.S is ranked number one in the world in GDP it is still not the top country when it comes to social well being. With that said, Hindus believe in rebirth until one realizes the ultimate divine at which point they would be free from the punarjanma, the transmigration of the soul, liberating their souls to achieve moksha. Railway Labor Act Essay Railway Labor Act and Impact on Modern Day Airlines For decades, the railroad industry was in a period of great economic political, and industrial changes in the United States. The industrial boom was taking its toll on the United States, and the widespread violent work stoppages were detrimental to the railroad industry due to tensions escalating between unions and workers. President Calvin Coolidge was strongly vocal about the issue and urged railroads and unions to recommend legislation to improve relations and ultimately reduce the threat of any railroad shutdowns. As a response, railroads and unions immediately drafted legislation, which in hopes would improve labor and union relations. • 47. Literary Devices In Medea When Love Backfires Euripides Medea is a tragic play that takes place in Corinth, Greece. It was first produced in 431 BC. It was during this time that Corinth and Athens were rivals, fighting to have the upper hand. In fact, Corinth and Sparta teamed together against Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. Like most literature, Euripides Medea incorporates the period in which it was written along with a timeless theme. Euripdes uses the literary devices of setting, irony, and symbolism to depict the theme of identity in relation to marriage. The play Medea uses the setting to help the audience better understand the meaning of the text. What is said depends greatly on who is around and where the character(s) are. For example, when Medea is by herself or with the chorus, she is speaking freely of her evil plans, however, when she was in the presences of Creon or Jason, she lied to their faces. The audience knows what her true thoughts and feelings are due to the setting. They are not tricked into thinking she has changed her mind but instead, they know when she is lying based on who she is around. After Medea devised a plan, she sent for Jason and pleades to him, Jason, I ask you to forgive me for the things I said before. You re used to putting up with my temper, since so many acts of love have passed between us... (Medea, 870). This quote is a perfect example of how the setting changes the meaning of the words. This helps portray the overall them of identity. Medea is now full of rage and anger due to her husband leaving her for another woman. She has lost her sense of identity which was found in her husband. She is a refugee in Corinth and has no friends or family. She feels completely alone with nowhere else to turn but to anger and rage. The literary device of irony is strategically used throughout the entire play. The irony within the text works in Medea because the audience understands Medea s thoughts and plans while the characters within the play do not. For instance, Jason says, I will not carry on this quarrel any longer. But if you want to take me up on my offer of money for the children or your own exile say so, I am ready to be generous to you... (Medea, 610). What Jason does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
