Analysis Of. Eliot s The Four Quartets And `` The...
I. Introduction to T.S Eliot
T.S. Eliot wrote poems that communicated his antagonistic perspectives of life, mankind, and his
general surroundings by exemplifying and escalating particular angles and analogies in his written
work.
T.S. Eliot was born in 1888 and lived during early 1900 s and was a part of Modernist Period. He lived
throughout two world wars and struggled with poverty and oppression which impacted his writings.
Eliot wrote The Four Quartets and The Waste Land which are important because they have
tremendously influential themes and catapulted him to the foreground of the Modernist Movement of
poetry.
II. Author Bio
Eliot carried on with an existence loaded with tension yet was resolved to conquer any deterrents to
accomplish a higher status in the literary world.
He and Vivien settled in London the same year, but they experienced a troubled relationship from the
start, due in a large part to Vivien s neurotic illnesses. (Journey of Magi).
These hardships lead Eliot into a condition of breakdown, which was filled by his wife Vivien s
ailment.
For his lifetime of poetic innovation, Eliot won the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize in Literature in
1948. (Biography.com Editors)
T.S. Eliot was awarded with Nobel Prize in Literature for his outstanding contribution to present day
poetry.
III. Literary Movement
T.S. Eliot is one of the most well known poets of the Antebellum Period, for his contributions and
impact in the Modernist Movement.

Essay about The Psychology of Robert Frost’s Nature Poetry
The Psychology of Robert Frost s Nature Poetry
Robert Frost s nature poetry occupies a significant place in the poetic arts; however, it is likely Frost s
use of nature is the most misunderstood aspect of his poetry. While nature is always present in Frost s
writing, it is primarily used in a pastoral sense (Lynen 1). This makes sense as Frost did consider
himself to be a shepherd.
Frost uses nature as an image that he wants us to see or a metaphor that he wants us to relate to on a
psychological level. To say that Frost is a nature poet is inaccurate.
His poetry is in the main psychologically oriented with emphasis on specific recurring themes, which
include, but are not limited to, loneliness, retreat, spirituality, darkness, ... Show more content on

The contrast between the humans and nature enables Frost to deal with and illustrate significant issues
affecting humans.
A very interesting point regarding Frost s relationship with nature is that he views it with ambiguity.
Most assume that Frost is a nature lover; however, while this is true in part, Frost also views nature as
having the capability of being destructive. Lynen speaks of this duality by saying, You cannot have
one without the other: love of natural beauty and horror at the remoteness and indifference of the
physical world are not opposites but different aspects of the same view (7). On speaking of Frost s
dualistic view of nature, Phillip L. Gerber states, For nature is hard as she is soft, she can destroy and
thwart, disappoint, frustrate, and batter (132). Robert Frost views nature as an alien force capable of
destroying man , but on the flip side, he also views man s struggle with nature as a heroic battle
(quoted in Thompson).
In his poem Our Hold on the Planet Frost illustrates this point by saying,
There is much in nature against us. But we forget:
Take nature altogether since time began Including human nature, in peace and war, And it must be a
little more in favor of man, Say a fraction of one percent at the very least,
Or our number living wouldn t be steadily more, Our hold on the planet wouldn t have so increased.
(Frost 317).

Murder Of Emmett Till Thesis
The Murder of Emmett Till is an incredible documentary about the harsh reality of life for African
Americans in the U.S. in the 1950 s. The documentary does an amazing job of shedding light onto this
terrible period of American history by showing it s audience a very graphic example of this time
period s prejudice against African America. The Murder of Emmett Till focuses on a case in 1955 in
which a 14 year old African American boy was ruthlessly murdered for supposedly flirting with a
white woman. The intention of this magnificent documentary are made fairly clear to its audience as
the video progresses; its intentions were to inform the audience about this gruesome case, the time
period in which it occurred along with suggestions on how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many of the interviews included in the film are those of friends, family, and witnesses. The most
impacting of those interviews were those that included friends and family. The film reached out to Till
s mother and was able to interview and she really tied the documentary together, often she would
speak about her deceased son and how his death impacted her and the rest of the African American
community. Moses Wright who was there when Bryant kidnapped Emmet was also very impactful, he
tried to convince the kidnappers to give the boy a whipping, instead of doing the unthinkable, of
course, they didn t listen and took the boy. Many other friends and family of Till were interviewed as
well, many of which described Till and his personality. This allowed the audience to build an image of
Emmet Till, which also something many documentaries fail to do. An ordinary documentary would
give the audience cold hard facts about the case, The Murder of Emmet Till, however; builds upon
emotion by building up these people like an author would build a character. The film uses the
audience s emotions to emphasize the importance and tragedy of this event, the use of emotion also
encourages the audience to care more about what happened. Instead of relying on pure facts, which
often only appeal to only some people, they use emotion which appeals to all and they, of course,
include facts to support their overall

How Did Japanese Anime Influence American Culture
Japan is a place where many of the objects we use come from. For example, DVD s, digital cameras,
and even the favorite food of an American college student, Ramen, are all Japanese inventions. Japan
has had more of an effect on America than first thought. However, there is a part of Japan that many
wouldn t expect to influence America. Japanese Animation influences American Culture majorly.
First off, certain Events are a big part of the major changes brought into America from Japan. Many
would never know that most of the major events are around on account of Japanese animation (Also
known as anime or, Japanimation ). A few examples are Comic Con, Anime Con, and Cosplay Proms.

Analysis of Bbc at the Time of Greg Dyke Essay

the time that Dyke took over. To what degree is it facilitating the success of the BBC? The BBC was
set up in 1922 as a public service broadcaster. The BBC quickly became a household name and played
a part in shaping British culture. Company culture is the values and beliefs shared by the members of a
group and the BBC is a group which has both internal (BBC employees) and external (general public)
members. The BBC is financed by a TV license fee paid by each household and represents the cultural

get to the grass roots of the business. He met with employees and asked How can I make a difference?
and he listened to what people had to say and did not express any opinions. He also quickly gained
respect at the top of the organisation using similar tactics and Mark Byford described what he really
liked about ...him and me is we talk a lot about the wider BBC together, not just World services. He
doesn t say everything he does is right, he asks, what do you think . On his appointment Dyke was not
a popular choice as Director General only gaining his position on a 7 5 vote so his ability to influence
at all levels was important. Those with symbolic power can change people s understanding of a
situation so that they adopt your goals as their own. Dyke s process power due to his formal status
held in the organisation hierarchy allows him to be able to stop/start or influence processes in order to
achieve a desired outcome. Immediately after starting, Dyke launched an organisational review of the
broadcast division and he later extended this to the whole of the BBC (Keys, 2006). Dyke s process
power is strong due to his position as Director General and his previous experience. Dyke s ability to

The Cause Of Slavery In Ancient Rome
The Romans partially met the common good. Some examples of a few things the did well was making
pipes and aqueducts to bring water to their cities. The problem was the pipes were made with lead, so
a lot of the people would get lead poisoning. One of the things that they could have done better with
was their entertainment because they would make slaves fight in gladiator fight and they would fight
to the death. If you owed a partition money, they could make you their slave as they had the write to
do so. However, slaves could earn money and buy their way out of slavery. If a slave had kids, their
kids would be free citizens. Most people in Rome were the plebeians, who were the workforce of the

Maximum Security Prisons
When I think of a prison the first thing that comes to my mind is a secure facility where criminals are
taken to. A facility where people are rehabilitated and punish by imprisonment for doing wrong to or
against society. Prisons are a facility for criminals that have committed crimes such as felonies and
usually the prisoners there have to serve long sentences. There are different types of prison, based in
different aspects to protect the prisoners. An example could be Juvenile prisons, which is a prison
usually for minors that are not 18 years old yet. This prison offers educational programs and also it
segregates the adults from the minors which prevents them from interacting with more dangerous
prisoners. All prisons have security, however there are some prison that are a Minimum security

others said that it s fine the way it is. Some people argue that the system should only focus in
punishment while others argue that it should only be focus on rehabilitation. I personally think that the
system is not working because neither the punishments of the rehabilitation are working. The crimes
rates are not getting any lower, and prison are costing more and more. There is a lot of programs for
prisoners to engage in that could potentially help them change, however must of the prisoners take it
for granted. In a lot of cases, minors who were in a Juvenile prison when they turn 18 they are transfer
to a regular prison in which the young adult now is most likely to be recruited by gangs members and
become a more dangerous criminal. Most inmate s continue their criminal activity inside of prison.

Cause Of Plastic Pollution
The following poem illustrates the problem of pollution, focusing on plastic, in the marine
environment.
The best place to be is next to the sea where tired feet gladly greet, sand so soft and white.
The taste of salty air, a cool breeze blowing through untied hair,
Warmth all around, from the sun beaming down, against a backdrop of majestic blue.
Hear the birds sing, the waves crashing,
And know one thing is true.
The ocean is drowning in a sea of plastic,
Before long marine life will be in a casket.
The beauty of the beach will be no more
Once plastic covers the shore.
Birds are entangled, turtles are endangered, trash litters the ocean floor.
A plan of action needs to be taken with all humans participating.
Oceans are water, water is life, and right now life is suffocating.
Plastics currently represent the vast majority of human made debris present in the oceans (Reisser,
Shaw, Wilcox, Hardersty, Proietti, Thums, Pattiaratchi, n.d., p.1). According to Sigler (2014), the
magnitude of plastic pollution carried to sea has significantly multiplied over the past several decades
(p. 2). Due to this increase in plastic pollution, oceans are becoming increasingly dangerous to marine
wildlife, the environment and human health; which is why policies that ban plastic bags and single
use, disposable dishes are crucial to the sustainability of Earth s water supply. Besides being unsightly,
plastic in the oceans cause major detrimental effects to marine life. Animals can get entangled or even
die from ingestion. Globally, at least 23% of marine mammal species, 36% of seabird species, and
86% of sea turtle species are known to be affected by plastic debris (Sigler, 2014, p. 3). Some plastic
in the ocean gets broken down into smaller pieces that become increasingly toxic, which then get
eaten by fish, and following the food chain end up effecting human health (Reisser et al., n.d., p. 2).
Multiple studies have proven that single use, disposable plastic is the most common type of litter
found in the oceans. Annually almost 280 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, the majority
of consumer products used today are comprised of some form of plastic (Sigler, 2014, p. 1). Plastic
was made to last, it

Eusebius s Expository Essay
Eusebius emphasizes the importance of academic study for effective pastoral care and defense of the
community both within, and outside of the community. I wonder if this may have been a response to
widespread suspicion among other Christians of the philosophical and esoteric brand of Christianity
that seems to have been quite prevalent in 4th century Alexandria and Caesarea. His insistence on the
concrete value of intellectual pursuits is in part to rehabilitate his heritage and connection to Origen. It
may also be a response in part due to what Eusebius would call elite prejudice against the isolated
philosopher. However, as Origen s attitude toward the leadership of the church had evolved from that
of Clement of Rome, Eusebius attempts to take a step or two beyond Origen. Eusebius both does
justice to his heritage in Origen, while shaping it into his 4th century rhetoric and ideology of
legitimate authority. For Origen, the free obedience of the student to the teacher was vital, and

discussion of the first Christian school, revealing the school s ultimate role in his ideological model of

Symptoms And Treatment Of Alzheimer s Disease
There are many diseases and disorders in the world that can attack a human s body and destroy certain
organ systems in the process. In this paper, you will learn about a particular disease that has been
studied by many scientists and doctors for decades. Research hospitals such as Mayo Clinic and John
Hopkins University have studied Alzheimer s disease in order to come to conclusions on what the
disease is and what can cure the disease. This disease can cause critical damage to a human s body
from the symptoms to the treatment that is followed by the diagnosis. In the following paper, we will
discover the symptoms, the organs affected, and the treatment for Parkinson s disease.

In the early stages of the disease the symptoms usually begin to occur when the patient has more
memory loss and confusion than what is considered normal for their age. Also, the beginning stages
tend to show milder symptom behaviors and can typically be overlooked causing later discovery of the
disease. As previously stated, memory loss is the first sign of dementia and an example would be not
remembering where you placed your keys or how to properly get dressed. It begins with the easier
tasks that become difficult for everyday functioning. Mild Alzheimer s disease involves increased
memory loss, wandering or getting lost, repeating questions, taking longer to complete daily tasks, and
changes in personality. In the mild stage a patient is commonly diagnosed. Moderate Alzheimer s
disease occurs when the disease begins to progress. In this stage, the brain has a hard time with
controlling language, forming reasoning, sensory process, and conscious thoughts. In the moderate
stage it becomes tougher on the ones close to the patients due to the fact that it becomes harder and
harder for the patient to recognize and learn new things. Severe Alzheimer s disease is when plaques
and tangles spread through the patient s brain, brain tissue shrinks tremendously, communication is
eliminated, and care is necessary. At this stage of Alzheimer s the patient becomes bed ridden and is at
the end stage. As a result of the symptoms, functioning as a normal person becomes impossible and a

Reaching the Cape of Good Hope in 1487, they were led by the navigator, Vasco da Gama, across the
Indian Ocean to discover the sea route to the Far East in 1497. They knew of the existence of lands
across the Atlantic and they had made several expeditions to the West before Columbus discovered the
Antilles in 1492, but they had kept the knowledge to themselves in order to forestall the ambitions of
Spain, England, and France. For a small nation, secrecy was the only available method of
safeguarding the rewards of bold and successful exploration against exploitation by more powerful
maritime rivals.
The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) settled the question of possession of the new lands between Spain
and Portugal. It was agreed that territories lying east of a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde
Islands should belong to Portugal, the lands to the west to Spain. This imaginary line, from pole to
pole, cut through the eastern most part of the South American continent and constituted Brazil s first
frontier, although the formal discovery by Pedro Alvares Cabral did not take place until six years later
in 1500.
First Settlements (1530 1549)
Cabral s voyage was soon followed by other Portuguese expeditions. The most exploitable wealth they
found was a wood that produced red and purples dyes, pau brasil (from which the country derived its
name). Organized occupation only began in 1530,

Genetically Modified Organisms Or Gmos
The world is an ever changing place, full of people with constantly evolving ideas and innovations.
Humans have been designed to create and innovate; to explore the world around them and to solve
problems. One of these innovation scientists have been working with are genetically modified
organisms, or GMOs for short. The topic of GMOs is extremely controversial. There are those who
back it one hundred percent, and those who seek to see it destroyed. While much of GMOs fame
comes from the field of genetically modified foods, it is most certainly not limited to it. A quieter, and
perhaps more imaginary field of GMOs has to do with genetically modified pigs. Scientists have been
reworking the genes of some swine in order to make their tissue and organs usable for humans. In
other words, scientists have been trying develop a breed of pigs who can be used as tissue and organ
donors for people. While many people have expressed concerns for GMOs, genetically modified pigs,
as tissue donors for humans, may prove beneficial in the near future. Before being able to understand
genetically modified pigs and their benefits, it is vital to understand what GMOs are and how they
work. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, genetically modified organisms are organism[s]

Stan Lee Research Paper

man is the mastermind behind the phrase. In Stan Lee s case he may have created the catchy line as a

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon briefly decide to leave the company. This gives Stan Lee free range to
create characters and story lines as he pleases. After a long gray period of watered down comics that
people were not enjoying reading or creating Lee makes a bold move based on the opinion of his wife,
Joan Lee, who sees how much they are struggling. He pushes his higher ups to allow him to start
producing comics outside the CCA. They hesitantly allow him to try this risky business move. This
turns out to be just the step Timely needed as it saved them from bankruptcy. Fantastic Four is
published pushing them out in front of their only leading competitor DC for the first time in history.
The success of Fantastic Four brings upon the X Men, Hulk, Iron Man, and the rise of multi
cultural/ethnic characters to the comic world. Timely promptly rebrands to Marvel Comics, and the
Silver Age of Comics comes to a close and the Bronze Age begins. The Bronze Age (1970 s/1985 )
restored the comic culture to America and slowly began spreading around the globe as well. As they
evolved Stan Lee pushed boundaries right along with it. Lee is largely credited for being the person
who re envisioned the very structure of how heroes are portrayed and wrote. He strongly believed the
character under the mask is just as or more important than the hero itself. This shift in direction
changed the entire way visual story telling was perceived at the time. Now characters weren t just
super, they were human too. Relatable people with struggles, relationships, and even everyday jobs.
He also strived to set the majority of Marvels stories in the real world and not in fictional settings.
This allowed for relatable fathomable individuals and the creation of Marvels biggest triumph

It also proves that because of the new things we have found out, we can begin to look even deeper to
uncover more of the unknown about our universe. By the Hubble Telescope getting images of the
Butterfly Nebula, we can truly see how stars are formed. This helps support the theory of the Nebular
Hypothesis because now that we have images of a nebula and how stars form from it, we can prove
that that was the way our star, the Sun, was formed. The discovery of dark matter helps us realize how
much mass there truly is in the universe and can help us determine the future of the universe. Hubble
discovering the age of the universe helps us to date when certain events have occurred and have an
understanding of how long it took for it to form. It has also proved the Big Bang Theory because it
discovered distant galaxies using redshift and shows how the universe came from a small area and
started expanding, which is still continuing today. Overall, Hubble s discoveries have opened up the

How Did Josef Mengele Contribute To The Holocaust
The more we do to you, the less you seem to believe we are doing it. This quote by Josef Mengele
speaks to his time spent as part of the Holocaust. Historically, many may also know him as the Angel
of Death. He is infamous for the inhumane experiments he did on the Jewish children during the
Holocaust. Mengele was cruel and unapologetic. What he did, he believed he did in the name of
Germany and science. Perhaps this lack of remorse and guilt is what is most intriguing about him.
Mengele had an eventful life from his early years, to what he did in the Holocaust, to the time after the
Holocaust was over.
According to Wikipedia, On March 16th, 1911 Josef Mengele, one of the cruelest men on earth, was
born. He was born in Günzburg, Germany and he was the oldest of three children. His father s name
was Karl Mengele a prosperous manufacturer of farming implements. In 1935, the younger Mengele
studied at the University of Munich and earned a Ph.D. in physical anthropology. Josef Mengele
became an assistant of Dr. Otmar von Verschuer at the Institute for Hereditary Biology in 1937. Dr.
Otmar von Verschuer was a scientist who was widely known for his research on twins.

The Theory Of Mind ( Tom )
Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to differentiate one s own mental state from others and therefore,
influence the behaviour accordingly. Mental states comprise of the individual s desires, beliefs and
intentions. ToM is considered to be a milestone in psychosocial development as pre schoolers at the
age of 4 or 5 tend to be able to recognise that not everyone perceive the same reality as they do
(Wellman, Cross Watson, 2001). This is known as false belief and is an important skill in

lag considerably behind in ToM compared to normally hearing peers. The outcomes of a delayed ToM
do not occur in a particular order nor should they be considered as distinct features. Rather, the
consequences are intertwined whereby one particular aspect can affect the other. For a deaf child, their
natural language is signing (Mayer Leigh, 2010). Auslan or other variations of signing is instinctive to
a deaf individual because it is the language that they can form coherent sentences and explicit
semantics to engage in a discourse. Although language is predominately symbols rather than verbal or
written compared to a deaf child s normally hearing peers, it still allows the child to apprehend mental
states in their cognition and conceive others around. Therefore, studies have shown that these children
can do just as well, or even better, on false belief tests than hearing children (Marschark Clark, 1998).
In other words, despite being diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing, native signers typically show no
delayed ToM and the implication is higher control of behaviours, or executive functioning, and

Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation
Social Media has a massive impact on a person s self presentation because of the different trends
where everyone wants to fit in with society s expectations of what we should look like. Celebrities are
made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more toned and a lot
slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs. This then leads to the
modern generation becoming self conscious because they feel they have to fit in and achieve an ideal
self that fits in with those around them.
Erving Goffman sees self presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a
drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a persona is
when someone wears various personality masks depending on which roles they are undertaking, for
example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them as a kind, friendly
person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their personality will
change. I wear a mask when I m with my friends and this portrays me as a friendly, outgoing
character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive.
Alongside Goffman s idea of the masks , he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self
presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we set out our self presentation, this
includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. When I m at

The Causes Of The Cold War
The Cold War was an important phase in the history of international relations. In accordance with one
of the etymological theories, the term Cold War was coined by a Spanish medieval writer Juan Manuel
in the 14th century. However, he could not predict that the Cold War era would have largely affected
the region, which was hugely influenced by his future descendants of Hispanic origin. The Cold War
was an indirect confrontation between the two superpowers the United States of America and the
Soviet Union in the period of 1945 to 1991. Moreover, it was a struggle between two world systems:
liberal capitalism and communism. The conflict never escalated into a direct war between the
superpowers but both countries have been involved in numerous proxy wars throughout the globe. In
Latin America, as in other Third World regions (Africa and Asia) the Cold War was occasionally very
hot.
In this paper, I will argue that the nature of Latin American socialist movement significantly varied.
Some movements were truly socialist and communist, notwithstanding, some of the revolutionary
forces have manipulated the Cold War rhetoric in their national interests. Moreover, I will analyze the
relationship of those movements with the USSR, which, from case to case, had its distinguish features.
My essay will be structured in the following way. The first section will be devoted to the causes of
Soviet involvement in Latin America and the USSR s strategies disposable in the region. Secondly,

Cultural Barriers In Society
Most children of immigrant parents are living a double life: American citizen by day and citizen of
their homeland at night. The expectation from these children is to assimilate into a new culture and
still hold on to their native roots. In theory they should be getting the best of both worlds. However, in
reality many of these children will grow up in the American society with a confused, unhealthy
mindset and not progress as they should. Above all, not being able to fit into one culture can
desensitize someone, cause cultural barriers, and affect an individual s mental health. First, An
individual who does not fit into a single culture can be desensitized to a topic, because they cannot
make the same emotional connections. The soccer scene in the movie Battleship is a good example.
Members of the American and Japanese military are having a soccer match in Honolulu Hawaii, and
the score is two to zero in favor of the Japanese. As the game progresses the American team is starting
to become nervous and anxious. Suddenly just before the end of the game Alex Hopper one of the
main characters suffers an accident rewarding him with a penalty. The crowd goes silent as they hope
that Alex can make a goal and end the game with a point. Sadly, Alex miss the goal, and the sound of a
whistle can be heard signaling the end of the match. The American military team lost and the audience

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Abrasive Jet Machining
Sapphire 0.2 0.8 300
Abrasive:
The most common abrasive materials used for Abrasive jet machining are aluminum oxide, silicon
carbide. Sodium bicarbonates, glass beads of small grain size and dolomite are used for cleaning and
polishing purpose. The selection of abrasive material depends on the work material, machining
operation and required material removal rate.
The size of the material is also important. The material removal rate (MRR) depends on the grain size.
The coarse grains give high MRR, and they are recommended for cutting. The finer grains are useful
in finishing operation. However, the finer grain tends to stick together and cause a clog in the nozzle.
The grain must be sharp edged, but fine enough to remain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thin sections of brittle and hard material like ceramic, glass, and germanium can be machined.
Disadvantages of Abrasive Jet Machining: The material removal rate is low. The process tends to
environmental pollution. A dust collection system must be provided to avoid air pollution and health
hazards. This can be eliminated by using abrasive water jet machining. The abrasive powder cannot be
reused because its cutting ability decrease and it may clog on orifice of the nozzle. Higher chance of
stray cutting*. Tapering may occur during drilling. AJM not suited for machining of soft material
because the abrasive may get embedded in the work material. Nozzle life is low (300hr), and short
standoff distance causes frequent damages on the nozzle. The air used for abrasive jet must be moister
and oil free.
* Stray cutting is an over cutting of material during machining process. It results in a non uniform
cutting surface. Stray cutting is unavoidable if cutting operation not properly controlled.
Applications:
AJM is suitable for machining heat sensitive material like silicon, gallium because the heat generation
during the machining is very

Effect Of Sleep On Declarative Memory
Article Interrogation on Exploring the effect of sleep and reduced interference on different forms of
declarative memory In this article, researchers used three studies to attempt to determine if sleep
affects declarative memory (Schönauer, Pawlizki, Köck, Gais, 2014). The study seems to test an
association between the variables of sleep and declarative memory, and the study attempts to make the
casual claim that Sleep does not preferentially consolidate a specific kind of declarative memory, but
consistently promotes overall declarative memory formation (Schönauer et al., 2014, para. 5). The
overall validity of this experiments appears to be quite strong, as the researchers appeared to carefully
measure their variables and prioritized the different validities in order to achieve an accurate result.

Fall Of The Mayan Empire Essay
Fall of the Maya Empire
From the late eighth through the end of the ninth century, something unknown happened to shake the
Maya civilization to its foundations. One city after another, cities starting from the southern lowlands
to the Yucatan Peninsula were abandoned, and by 900 A.D., Maya civilization in that region had
collapsed. Countless scholars have combed through the Maya ruins for clues to help drive their own
theories to what caused this massive empire to vanish. The fall of the Maya empire has been
hypothesized to three main scenarios, exhaustion of resources, feuding city states and rulers, and an
extreme period of drought which contributed to the Maya demise.
Some believe that by the ninth century the Maya had exhausted the environment around them to the
point that it could no longer sustain an exponentially growing population. Other Maya scholars argue
that constant warfare among competing city states led the complicated military, family (by marriage)
and trade alliances between them led to the breakdown, along with the traditional system of divine
power. Finally, some catastrophic environmental climate change, like an extremely long, intense
period of drought, may have wiped out the Maya civilization. By the time the Spanish explorers

Economic Policies Of El Salvador And Other Nations Essay
Dollarization: A Comparison of Economic Policies in El Salvador and Other Nations Dollarization is
the process in which nations replace their domestic currencies [with foreign legal tender] ...to obtain
economic growth and stability (Rivera Solis 330). The US dollar is the most common choice of
exchange in this practice, though the adoption of other first world states currencies may be entertained
as well. Though its effects are not instant, US dollarization has brought many gradual benefits to the
economic statuses of several countries. There are two types of dollarization: official and unofficial. In
the process of official dollarization, a state gives complete monetary control to a foreign nation,
ceding its right to both create a central bank and issue a domestic form of currency. Where as a nation
loses its sovereignty to make decisions concerning its money supply in official dollarization, unofficial
dollarization allows states to keep most of its control in place. Nations who implement dollarization
unofficially keep their ability to own a central bank to fall back on, in cases of economic emergency,
and regulate their own currency. Some studies encourage the promotion of official dollarization, while
other scorn it s outcome and option for its slighter counterpart, partial dollarization, instead. This
paper explores the differences in both policies and the effects of dollarization on four separate nations:

strong they are, this method makes scientific things to be easily understand by readers and raise

Unlike a computer which must be controlled at the mouse and keyboard which is usually located at a

allows the instructor to control the computer in the corner of the room remotely, leaving them to stay

How Lanthanum Play A Role Within My Everyday Life
You might ask yourself, How does lanthanum play a role within my everyday life ? Rare earth
elements like lanthanum play an abundant part in our daily lives. In particular, lanthanum is used in
many ways such as improving our water supply, technology and health. This paper will define these
uses and also elaborate on its history and properties. To begin, the discovery of ceria was made in
1803 by Jons J. Berzelius in 1803 from the mineral cerite. His apprentice, Carl G. Mosander, took this
discovery further suggesting that other rare earth metals might exist within ceria. By infusing nitric
acid to cerium nitrate, Mosander, tested his belief. Consequently, some of the cerium nitrates bonded
with the acid providing the results that he was looking for. Mosander separated the results using both
sodium oxalate and heat, thus, making the first discovery of lanthanum in 1839. Lanthanum was first
created in the pure metal form by H. Kremers and R. Stevens in 1923. The element is mined from a
variety of ore minerals and deposits in the USA, China, Russia, Australia, and India. (1) The term
lanthanum comes from the Greek word lanthano , meaning hidden or concealed. It is grouped on the
periodic table with fifteen other rare earth elements being called lanthanides. It has an atomic number

NDP) have been compared to one another in an attempt to understand their choices made to persuade
audiences to take part in actively addressing and supporting their campaigns. Concepts discussed
throughout this course have been applied to the three varying campaigns, including attention, earned
media, branding, spreadability, intended audience, tone, navigation, and participation. These aspects
have been prominent in all three social media campaigns and thus, have been chosen for this case
analysis. Repurposing All three Political Parties post statuses and advertisements in English and
French. This dualism that they demonstrate is done to target both, Anglophones and Francophones and
reach a wider audience. This choice of theirs plays on the concept of repurposing for different
cultures. Another aspect of repurposing focuses on altering the campaign to match different seasons,
time periods as holidays and events differ. Keeping this element of repurposing in mind, the Liberal
party posted an image in the celebration of International Women s Day. The image consists of many
women holding their hands and giving the Liberals a thumbs up to support this cause and a quote
saying, Canada needs more women from diverse backgrounds making decisions in Ottawa. Because
when women succeed, we all succeed. The Conservatives did not use repurposing in any way to
support this event.

Tetralogy Of Fallot Research Paper
Introduction
Tetralogy of fallot is a complicated and rare congenital heart disease. It happens in 5 out of 10000
babies where males and females are equally affected. Children with Down syndrome or DiGeorge
syndrome are more common. It involves four types of heart abnormalities and malformations. The
four defects are overriding aorta, pulmonary stenosis, ventricular septal defect and right ventricular
hypertrophy. As a result, blood flow is significantly changed where the blood is not fully oxygenated
in the lungs and the tissues in the body receive poor oxygenated blood. This causes severe
complications and problems to the patients.
History
In 1671, Niels Stenson who was a Danish scientist found out tetralogy of fallot. After more than a ...

It occurs when the muscles have to work harder to pump the blood through the narrowed pulmonary
valve resulting increased in right ventricle pressure. This defect is closely associated with pulmonary
stenosis.
These defects cause blue baby syndrome. Blue baby syndrome occurs when babies have cyanosis
because deficiency of oxygenated blood to the body. Blood from right ventricle flows into aorta
through the shunt created by ventricular septal defect and causes less amount of blood to be
oxygenated in the lungs. As a result, some body parts will receive less or no oxygen at all. Therefore,
the colour of the skin turns to blue.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms usually occur during the first week of life. Cyanosis is the main signs of this
disease. Cyanosis is defined as the appearance of blue or purple colouration on skin, lip and nails. It is
caused by low amount of oxygen in the blood. Normally, TOF is diagnosed in the early stage of life.
Babies develop bluish or purplish skin intermittently especially after crying or feeding due to sudden
decrease of oxygen. These events are known as Tet spell . Other symptoms include shortness of
breath, loss of consciousness, clubbing of fingers, may not gain sufficient weight, prolong crying and
getting tired easily. Heart murmur can be heard because of abnormal blood flow through the heart.
When the baby becomes cyanotic, lay the baby on a comfortable position and pull his or her knees up
to the chest. This will increase the blood circulation to the lungs which will alleviate and relieve the

The Death Of The Volcano
The molten lava bubbled and hissed at the bottom of the volcano. Everyone bowed their heads, all that
could be heard was the crying of the grief stricken families . Then came a splash, as the dead body was
thrown over the edge and into the lava below. Our leader, Régle, stepped out of the shadows, her long
blonde hair swaying back and forth. She had a small frown on her face. She looked at the family
members and bowed her head in respect before walking out of sight. She had died at the age ten from
an unknown disease , but we didn t have the right resources, or the medicine to save her. We were just
lucky the disease hadn t spread.
After a moment of silence everyone went back to work. The tunnelers went back to their jobs, to

cleaners, they cleaned the clothes, the food, and the small rooms the people occupied. I worked as a
cleaner, if you didn t do your job, well then you wouldn t get lune déjeuner. Food was what people
negotiated with in the volcano. There was two meals, repas which was served when the sun was
directly above the volcano and lune déjeuner when the sun comes down and the moon is up. If you
missed even one of them you were doomed to be hungry for the next twelve hours. Clean water was a
royalty, we would drink rain water sometimes if the tunnelers hadn t found water in a few weeks. The
tunnelers cleaned the water they had in the miner jar, by placing them on straw and tying the rope to
the bridge for three days and then cooling them down by placing them on the entrance of the volcano
and buried in mud. The Régle kept water hidden from us, she said she was keeping if it we couldn t
find water anymore. No one really cared anyway, without her here there would be chaos. I didn t know
much about how we had gotten here, not many people did. This was a way of life though, and the only
time people left the volcano was when they either skipped their job for more than seven days, or they
committed a crime that could not be undone.
I walked into the cleaners corner, where we store our cleaning supplies. One of the older ladies that

Ethical and Legal Dilemmas of Surrogacy Essay
Ethical and Legal Dilemmas of Surrogacy
Christie Blackwell

Dr. Nine Bell
June 17, 2013
Ethical and Legal Dilemmas of Surrogacy Many individuals have a life plan consisting of college,
marriage, and then children. After numerous methods of conception, many couples are still unable to
conceive a child. A woman who enters into a contract with a couple, agreeing to carry and birth a
child, then hand that child over to the contracted couple, who is often unable to conceive own their
own naturally is considered surrogacy (Pozgar, 2012). Surrogacy raises many ethical and legal issues
for all parties involved. Is it moral or immoral to enter into an agreement with a woman to birth a child
for money? What are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the flipside on the issue, can it not also be viewed that allowing these women to do as they see fit
with their bodies as economic empowerment? The money provided to these women can used for
various financial means outside of taking care of medical heath care for themselves and the child. The
amount provided to each female varies depending on what she and the couple feel is sufficient,
therefore any extra monetary compensation can used to help the women relieve themselves from other
debts. Autonomy does provide the right that women get to choose their reproductive rights and that
includes bearing children for those who cannot do so or for monetary stability. Suggesting that
surrogacy dehumanizes her is another form of paternalism. Paternalism limits one s autonomy for their
own good (Pozgar, 2012). Some view altruistic surrogacy as a form of exploiting the surrogate. There
is no monetary compensation to woman placing her health and well being on the line for another s
benefit. However, it can also be held that the woman knowingly entered into the agreement with full
disclosure of the risks and benefits to her health and body. Again, autonomy and justice are extremely
prevalent ethical principles to explore when discussing the topic of surrogacy. Same sex marriage has

Essay On Millard David Erikson
Person of God the Son
You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God, Peter pronounces in Matthew 16:16. Jesus is the
Messiah, the promised deliverer to set God s people free. Jesus is the Son of the living God. Jesus is
one with God. Jesus was fully God and fully man. Through His death on the cross and resurrection
from the grave, the way was made open for a redeemed relationship between God the Father and His
people. Jesus is the Savior of the world.
Millard J. Erikson
Jesus was born of a virgin. God demonstrated His sovereignty over all, as a gift of grace, in Jesus
supernatural birth. Jesus was fully human. The Word of God became flesh. His humanity made Him
one of us, the only way in which He could redeem us. He came to us and lived amongst us, therefore
He knows our pain. Through His sinless human existence, Jesus could fully atone for the sins of all
mankind. Jesus is also fully God. In seeing Jesus, we see the Father. Jesus died and rose from the
grave, demonstrating His power over death, and His right standing as the Son of God. He is the giver
and sustainer of life. Jesus made the way for redemption to occur. He is worthy to be praised.

Comparing Social Class in Baby of the Family and Black...
Social Class in Baby of the Family and Black Girl Lost
Socioeconomic indicators such as education, income, and occupation are measures of social class
(Social World). The novels Baby of the Family (Ansa, 1989), and Black Girl Lost (Goines, 1973) are
examined to determine the intricate role one s environment plays in dictating the type of life one leads.
The class you are born into and raised in, class is your understanding of the world and where you fit

Lena comes home from school to find someone waiting for her. In contrast, Sandra arrived home . .
.The house was deserted (Lost 21). Class is not only a measure of money, but also security which is
lacking in Sandra s home environment.
The more one relents to assimilating into mainstream society, the better one s class ranking becomes.
Assimilation to the white societal ideals is the key to class advancement. Not all ethnic groups
assimilate in exactly the same way or at the same speed. In Assimilation in American Life (1964),
Milton Gordon suggested that there is a typology, or hierarchy, of assimilation, thus capturing some of
the key steps ethnic groups go through . . . (Reason 1997). The absence of education keeps people
from being economically and socially integrated into the larger society and breeds alienation and
resentment of their dependence (Reason 1997).
According to the article in Reason Magazine, the absence of civic responsibility keeps them from
being involved in many crucial decisions that affect their lives and further contributes to their
alienation (Reason 1997). In the case of Sandra, she is in little control over outcomes after she
becomes involved with the dope. Events become circumstantial. She and Chink are attempting
assimilation through selling drugs. Because this is illegal, the author inflicts natural consequences

Lord Of The Flies Critical Analysis
The novel, Lord of the Flies, was written by William Golding in 1954. The novel tells the story of
what a horrible and disturbing world looks like when things go wrong. Sigmund Freud was a
psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the
unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego (CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack
represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest brain
part is the Id. Freud believed that the Id was the location of our pleasure principle. This is the area that
tells us to seek instant gratification from the things we do (CommonLit Staff). It doesn t know things
like right or wrong and justs acts like an animal doing whatever it wants and whenever it wants. The
boy named Jack is the Id part of the brain. One example is when Jack decides to leave his job doing
the fire to go hunting with the hunting party. Jack, obsessed with the idea of killing a pig, camouflages
his face with clay and charcoal and enters the jungle to hunt, accompanied by several other boys. On
the beach, Ralph and Piggy see a ship on the horizon but they also see that the signal fire has gone out
(Chapter 4). The Jack Id wants to go and have fun hunting on not be bored with the job of the fire. He
acts impulsive and doesn t do what is right. Second example is when Jack has had too much of Ralph

  • 2. Analysis Of. Eliot s The Four Quartets And `` The... I. Introduction to T.S Eliot T.S. Eliot wrote poems that communicated his antagonistic perspectives of life, mankind, and his general surroundings by exemplifying and escalating particular angles and analogies in his written work. T.S. Eliot was born in 1888 and lived during early 1900 s and was a part of Modernist Period. He lived throughout two world wars and struggled with poverty and oppression which impacted his writings. Eliot wrote The Four Quartets and The Waste Land which are important because they have tremendously influential themes and catapulted him to the foreground of the Modernist Movement of poetry. II. Author Bio Eliot carried on with an existence loaded with tension yet was resolved to conquer any deterrents to accomplish a higher status in the literary world. He and Vivien settled in London the same year, but they experienced a troubled relationship from the start, due in a large part to Vivien s neurotic illnesses. (Journey of Magi). These hardships lead Eliot into a condition of breakdown, which was filled by his wife Vivien s ailment. For his lifetime of poetic innovation, Eliot won the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. (Biography.com Editors) T.S. Eliot was awarded with Nobel Prize in Literature for his outstanding contribution to present day poetry. III. Literary Movement T.S. Eliot is one of the most well known poets of the Antebellum Period, for his contributions and impact in the Modernist Movement. ... Gave ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about The Psychology of Robert Frost’s Nature Poetry The Psychology of Robert Frost s Nature Poetry Robert Frost s nature poetry occupies a significant place in the poetic arts; however, it is likely Frost s use of nature is the most misunderstood aspect of his poetry. While nature is always present in Frost s writing, it is primarily used in a pastoral sense (Lynen 1). This makes sense as Frost did consider himself to be a shepherd. Frost uses nature as an image that he wants us to see or a metaphor that he wants us to relate to on a psychological level. To say that Frost is a nature poet is inaccurate. His poetry is in the main psychologically oriented with emphasis on specific recurring themes, which include, but are not limited to, loneliness, retreat, spirituality, darkness, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The contrast between the humans and nature enables Frost to deal with and illustrate significant issues affecting humans. A very interesting point regarding Frost s relationship with nature is that he views it with ambiguity. Most assume that Frost is a nature lover; however, while this is true in part, Frost also views nature as having the capability of being destructive. Lynen speaks of this duality by saying, You cannot have one without the other: love of natural beauty and horror at the remoteness and indifference of the physical world are not opposites but different aspects of the same view (7). On speaking of Frost s dualistic view of nature, Phillip L. Gerber states, For nature is hard as she is soft, she can destroy and thwart, disappoint, frustrate, and batter (132). Robert Frost views nature as an alien force capable of destroying man , but on the flip side, he also views man s struggle with nature as a heroic battle (quoted in Thompson). In his poem Our Hold on the Planet Frost illustrates this point by saying, There is much in nature against us. But we forget: Take nature altogether since time began Including human nature, in peace and war, And it must be a little more in favor of man, Say a fraction of one percent at the very least, Or our number living wouldn t be steadily more, Our hold on the planet wouldn t have so increased. • 4. Murder Of Emmett Till Thesis The Murder of Emmett Till is an incredible documentary about the harsh reality of life for African Americans in the U.S. in the 1950 s. The documentary does an amazing job of shedding light onto this terrible period of American history by showing it s audience a very graphic example of this time period s prejudice against African America. The Murder of Emmett Till focuses on a case in 1955 in which a 14 year old African American boy was ruthlessly murdered for supposedly flirting with a white woman. The intention of this magnificent documentary are made fairly clear to its audience as the video progresses; its intentions were to inform the audience about this gruesome case, the time period in which it occurred along with suggestions on how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the interviews included in the film are those of friends, family, and witnesses. The most impacting of those interviews were those that included friends and family. The film reached out to Till s mother and was able to interview and she really tied the documentary together, often she would speak about her deceased son and how his death impacted her and the rest of the African American community. Moses Wright who was there when Bryant kidnapped Emmet was also very impactful, he tried to convince the kidnappers to give the boy a whipping, instead of doing the unthinkable, of course, they didn t listen and took the boy. Many other friends and family of Till were interviewed as well, many of which described Till and his personality. This allowed the audience to build an image of Emmet Till, which also something many documentaries fail to do. An ordinary documentary would give the audience cold hard facts about the case, The Murder of Emmet Till, however; builds upon emotion by building up these people like an author would build a character. The film uses the audience s emotions to emphasize the importance and tragedy of this event, the use of emotion also encourages the audience to care more about what happened. Instead of relying on pure facts, which often only appeal to only some people, they use emotion which appeals to all and they, of course, include facts to support their overall ... To what degree is it facilitating the success of the BBC? The BBC was set up in 1922 as a public service broadcaster. The BBC quickly became a household name and played a part in shaping British culture. Company culture is the values and beliefs shared by the members of a group and the BBC is a group which has both internal (BBC employees) and external (general public) members. Those with symbolic power can change people s understanding of a situation so that they adopt your goals as their own. Dyke s process power due to his formal status held in the organisation hierarchy allows him to be able to stop/start or influence processes in order to achieve a desired outcome. Immediately after starting, Dyke launched an organisational review of the broadcast division and he later extended this to the whole of the BBC (Keys, 2006). One of the things that they could have done better with was their entertainment because they would make slaves fight in gladiator fight and they would fight to the death. There are different types of prison, based in different aspects to protect the prisoners. • 10. Cause Of Plastic Pollution The following poem illustrates the problem of pollution, focusing on plastic, in the marine environment. The best place to be is next to the sea where tired feet gladly greet, sand so soft and white. The taste of salty air, a cool breeze blowing through untied hair, Warmth all around, from the sun beaming down, against a backdrop of majestic blue. Hear the birds sing, the waves crashing, And know one thing is true. The ocean is drowning in a sea of plastic, Before long marine life will be in a casket. The beauty of the beach will be no more Once plastic covers the shore. Birds are entangled, turtles are endangered, trash litters the ocean floor. A plan of action needs to be taken with all humans participating. Oceans are water, water is life, and right now life is suffocating. Plastics currently represent the vast majority of human made debris present in the oceans (Reisser, Shaw, Wilcox, Hardersty, Proietti, Thums, Pattiaratchi, n.d., p.1). According to Sigler (2014), the magnitude of plastic pollution carried to sea has significantly multiplied over the past several decades (p. 2). Due to this increase in plastic pollution, oceans are becoming increasingly dangerous to marine wildlife, the environment and human health; which is why policies that ban plastic bags and single use, disposable dishes are crucial to the sustainability of Earth s water supply. Besides being unsightly, plastic in the oceans cause major detrimental effects to marine life. Animals can get entangled or even die from ingestion. Globally, at least 23% of marine mammal species, 36% of seabird species, and 86% of sea turtle species are known to be affected by plastic debris (Sigler, 2014, p. 3). Some plastic in the ocean gets broken down into smaller pieces that become increasingly toxic, which then get eaten by fish, and following the food chain end up effecting human health (Reisser et al., n.d., p. 2). Multiple studies have proven that single use, disposable plastic is the most common type of litter found in the oceans. Annually almost 280 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, the majority of consumer products used today are comprised of some form of plastic (Sigler, 2014, p. 1). Plastic was made to last, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Eusebius s Expository Essay Eusebius emphasizes the importance of academic study for effective pastoral care and defense of the community both within, and outside of the community. I wonder if this may have been a response to widespread suspicion among other Christians of the philosophical and esoteric brand of Christianity that seems to have been quite prevalent in 4th century Alexandria and Caesarea. His insistence on the concrete value of intellectual pursuits is in part to rehabilitate his heritage and connection to Origen. It may also be a response in part due to what Eusebius would call elite prejudice against the isolated philosopher. However, as Origen s attitude toward the leadership of the church had evolved from that of Clement of Rome, Eusebius attempts to take a step or two beyond Origen. Eusebius both does justice to his heritage in Origen, while shaping it into his 4th century rhetoric and ideology of legitimate authority. In this paper, you will learn about a particular disease that has been studied by many scientists and doctors for decades. Research hospitals such as Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins University have studied Alzheimer s disease in order to come to conclusions on what the disease is and what can cure the disease. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early stages of the disease the symptoms usually begin to occur when the patient has more memory loss and confusion than what is considered normal for their age. Also, the beginning stages tend to show milder symptom behaviors and can typically be overlooked causing later discovery of the disease. As previously stated, memory loss is the first sign of dementia and an example would be not remembering where you placed your keys or how to properly get dressed. It begins with the easier tasks that become difficult for everyday functioning. Mild Alzheimer s disease involves increased memory loss, wandering or getting lost, repeating questions, taking longer to complete daily tasks, and changes in personality. In the mild stage a patient is commonly diagnosed. Moderate Alzheimer s disease occurs when the disease begins to progress. In this stage, the brain has a hard time with controlling language, forming reasoning, sensory process, and conscious thoughts. In the moderate stage it becomes tougher on the ones close to the patients due to the fact that it becomes harder and harder for the patient to recognize and learn new things. Severe Alzheimer s disease is when plaques and tangles spread through the patient s brain, brain tissue shrinks tremendously, communication is eliminated, and care is necessary. At this stage of Alzheimer s the patient becomes bed ridden and is at the end stage. As a result of the symptoms, functioning as a normal person becomes impossible and a ... Reaching the Cape of Good Hope in 1487, they were led by the navigator, Vasco da Gama, across the Indian Ocean to discover the sea route to the Far East in 1497. They knew of the existence of lands across the Atlantic and they had made several expeditions to the West before Columbus discovered the Antilles in 1492, but they had kept the knowledge to themselves in order to forestall the ambitions of Spain, England, and France. For a small nation, secrecy was the only available method of safeguarding the rewards of bold and successful exploration against exploitation by more powerful maritime rivals. The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) settled the question of possession of the new lands between Spain and Portugal. It was agreed that territories lying east of a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands should belong to Portugal, the lands to the west to Spain. This imaginary line, from pole to pole, cut through the eastern most part of the South American continent and constituted Brazil s first frontier, although the formal discovery by Pedro Alvares Cabral did not take place until six years later in 1500. First Settlements (1530 1549) Cabral s voyage was soon followed by other Portuguese expeditions. The most exploitable wealth they

  • 16. Genetically Modified Organisms Or Gmos The world is an ever changing place, full of people with constantly evolving ideas and innovations. Humans have been designed to create and innovate; to explore the world around them and to solve problems. One of these innovation scientists have been working with are genetically modified organisms, or GMOs for short. The topic of GMOs is extremely controversial. There are those who back it one hundred percent, and those who seek to see it destroyed. While much of GMOs fame comes from the field of genetically modified foods, it is most certainly not limited to it. A quieter, and perhaps more imaginary field of GMOs has to do with genetically modified pigs. Scientists have been reworking the genes of some swine in order to make their tissue and organs usable for humans. In other words, scientists have been trying develop a breed of pigs who can be used as tissue and organ donors for people. While many people have expressed concerns for GMOs, genetically modified pigs, as tissue donors for humans, may prove beneficial in the near future. Before being able to understand genetically modified pigs and their benefits, it is vital to understand what GMOs are and how they work. The Bronze Age (1970 s/1985 ) restored the comic culture to America and slowly began spreading around the globe as well. As they evolved Stan Lee pushed boundaries right along with it. Lee is largely credited for being the person who re envisioned the very structure of how heroes are portrayed and wrote. He strongly believed the character under the mask is just as or more important than the hero itself. This shift in direction changed the entire way visual story telling was perceived at the time. Now characters weren t just super, they were human too. Relatable people with struggles, relationships, and even everyday jobs. He is infamous for the inhumane experiments he did on the Jewish children during the Holocaust. Mengele was cruel and unapologetic. What he did, he believed he did in the name of Germany and science. • 21. The Theory Of Mind ( Tom ) Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to differentiate one s own mental state from others and therefore, influence the behaviour accordingly. Mental states comprise of the individual s desires, beliefs and intentions. ToM is considered to be a milestone in psychosocial development as pre schoolers at the age of 4 or 5 tend to be able to recognise that not everyone perceive the same reality as they do (Wellman, Cross Watson, 2001). This is known as false belief and is an important skill in comprehending and predicting people s emotions and actions to construct a meaningful relationship. Moreover, a cochlear implant can improve a hearing impaired child s communication skills, which benefits social functioning, but still lag considerably behind in ToM compared to normally hearing peers. The outcomes of a delayed ToM do not occur in a particular order nor should they be considered as distinct features. Rather, the consequences are intertwined whereby one particular aspect can affect the other. For a deaf child, their natural language is signing (Mayer Leigh, 2010). Auslan or other variations of signing is instinctive to a deaf individual because it is the language that they can form coherent sentences and explicit semantics to engage in a discourse. Although language is predominately symbols rather than verbal or written compared to a deaf child s normally hearing peers, it still allows the child to apprehend mental states in their cognition and conceive others around. Therefore, studies have shown that these children can do just as well, or even better, on false belief tests than hearing children (Marschark Clark, 1998). In other words, despite being diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing, native signers typically show no delayed ToM and the implication is higher control of behaviours, or executive functioning, and ... Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation Social Media has a massive impact on a person s self presentation because of the different trends where everyone wants to fit in with society s expectations of what we should look like. Celebrities are made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more toned and a lot slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs. This then leads to the modern generation becoming self conscious because they feel they have to fit in and achieve an ideal self that fits in with those around them. Erving Goffman sees self presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a persona is when someone wears various personality masks depending on which roles they are undertaking, for example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them as a kind, friendly person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their personality will change. I wear a mask when I m with my friends and this portrays me as a friendly, outgoing character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive. Alongside Goffman s idea of the masks , he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we set out our self presentation, this includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. The Cold War was an indirect confrontation between the two superpowers the United States of America and the Soviet Union in the period of 1945 to 1991. Moreover, it was a struggle between two world systems: liberal capitalism and communism. The conflict never escalated into a direct war between the superpowers but both countries have been involved in numerous proxy wars throughout the globe. One city after another, cities starting from the southern lowlands to the Yucatan Peninsula were abandoned, and by 900 A.D., Maya civilization in that region had collapsed. Countless scholars have combed through the Maya ruins for clues to help drive their own theories to what caused this massive empire to vanish. The fall of the Maya empire has been hypothesized to three main scenarios, exhaustion of resources, feuding city states and rulers, and an extreme period of drought which contributed to the Maya demise. Some believe that by the ninth century the Maya had exhausted the environment around them to the point that it could no longer sustain an exponentially growing population. Other Maya scholars argue that constant warfare among competing city states led the complicated military, family (by marriage) and trade alliances between them led to the breakdown, along with the traditional system of divine power. Economic Policies Of El Salvador And Other Nations Essay Dollarization: A Comparison of Economic Policies in El Salvador and Other Nations Dollarization is the process in which nations replace their domestic currencies [with foreign legal tender] ...to obtain economic growth and stability (Rivera Solis 330). The US dollar is the most common choice of exchange in this practice, though the adoption of other first world states currencies may be entertained as well. Though its effects are not instant, US dollarization has brought many gradual benefits to the economic statuses of several countries. There are two types of dollarization: official and unofficial. In the process of official dollarization, a state gives complete monetary control to a foreign nation, ceding its right to both create a central bank and issue a domestic form of currency. Where as a nation loses its sovereignty to make decisions concerning its money supply in official dollarization, unofficial dollarization allows states to keep most of its control in place. Nations who implement dollarization unofficially keep their ability to own a central bank to fall back on, in cases of economic emergency, and regulate their own currency. Rare earth elements like lanthanum play an abundant part in our daily lives. In particular, lanthanum is used in many ways such as improving our water supply, technology and health. This paper will define these uses and also elaborate on its history and properties. To begin, the discovery of ceria was made in 1803 by Jons J. Berzelius in 1803 from the mineral cerite. His apprentice, Carl G. Mosander, took this discovery further suggesting that other rare earth metals might exist within ceria. By infusing nitric acid to cerium nitrate, Mosander, tested his belief. Consequently, some of the cerium nitrates bonded with the acid providing the results that he was looking for. Mosander separated the results using both sodium oxalate and heat, thus, making the first discovery of lanthanum in 1839. Lanthanum was first created in the pure metal form by H. Kremers and R. Stevens in 1923. The element is mined from a variety of ore minerals and deposits in the USA, China, Russia, Australia, and India. (1) The term lanthanum comes from the Greek word lanthano , meaning hidden or concealed. It is grouped on the periodic table with fifteen other rare earth elements being called lanthanides. It has an atomic number of 57 on the elements table and an atomic mass of 138.91g.mol 1. In pure metal form it is silvery white in color. Comparing Canadian Federal Political Parties The social media campaigns of the Canadian Federal Political Parties (Liberal, Conservative, and NDP) have been compared to one another in an attempt to understand their choices made to persuade audiences to take part in actively addressing and supporting their campaigns. Concepts discussed throughout this course have been applied to the three varying campaigns, including attention, earned media, branding, spreadability, intended audience, tone, navigation, and participation. These aspects have been prominent in all three social media campaigns and thus, have been chosen for this case analysis. Repurposing All three Political Parties post statuses and advertisements in English and French. This dualism that they demonstrate is done to target both, Anglophones and Francophones and reach a wider audience. This choice of theirs plays on the concept of repurposing for different cultures. Another aspect of repurposing focuses on altering the campaign to match different seasons, time periods as holidays and events differ. Keeping this element of repurposing in mind, the Liberal party posted an image in the celebration of International Women s Day. The image consists of many women holding their hands and giving the Liberals a thumbs up to support this cause and a quote saying, Canada needs more women from diverse backgrounds making decisions in Ottawa. The money provided to these women can used for various financial means outside of taking care of medical heath care for themselves and the child. The amount provided to each female varies depending on what she and the couple feel is sufficient, therefore any extra monetary compensation can used to help the women relieve themselves from other debts. Autonomy does provide the right that women get to choose their reproductive rights and that includes bearing children for those who cannot do so or for monetary stability. Suggesting that surrogacy dehumanizes her is another form of paternalism. Paternalism limits one s autonomy for their own good (Pozgar, 2012). Some view altruistic surrogacy as a form of exploiting the surrogate. There is no monetary compensation to woman placing her health and well being on the line for another s benefit. However, it can also be held that the woman knowingly entered into the agreement with full disclosure of the risks and benefits to her health and body. Again, autonomy and justice are extremely prevalent ethical principles to explore when discussing the topic of surrogacy. Sigmund Freud was a psychologist that studied how humans minds work and our controlled by basic impulses in the unconscious brain called the Id, Superego, and the Ego (CommonLit Staff). In the book, Jack represents the Id, Ralph represents Ego, and Piggy is the Superego. The most basic and oldest brain part is the Id.
