Organizational Change In Eastman Kodak
1. Introduction Organizational change is the movement of an organization away from its current state
and toward some desired future state to increase its effectiveness (Lunenburg, 2010). Changes in the
environment often require changes within the organization driving within that environment. Change
fatigue is one of the challenges organization face.
Change may occur in order to remain competitive in response to new competition. Change fatigue is
rampant, and its aggravated by a natural tendency to distrust change that is imposed from above
(Morgan, 2001). This report will discuss about Eastman Kodak Company as the organization that
failed because it did not go through some organizational change or resistance to change.

Organizational Culture Organizational Culture is a pattern of shared basic assumptions that was
learned by a group as it solved its problems of external adaption and internal integration, that has
worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct
way to recognize, think, and feel in relation to those problems (Schein, 2004). Historically, Kodak was
a business built on a culture of innovation and change, which made them very successful, but as
achievement grew so did their complacency.
The deep rooted source of Kodak s problem was a culture of self satisfaction . Kodak was critically
destroyed by its culture, although it was the quick progress of digital photo technology that is
commonly blamed for Kodak s demise (Riley, 2015). On the other hand, Kodak s new leadership has
not clearly addressed what are Kodak s essential features and neglected the need to transform the
Kodak s culture destinies, which may be any possibility of Kodak future succeed. Therefore, the
culture of Kodak was unable to operationalize and launch the ideas that would eventually force their
demise (Simonelli,

As Artie wrote it in the book, in 1968 my mother killed herself ... she left no note! , shows absence of
a note, which might have explained why she killed herself, made not only Artie, but also Vladek were
put into the misery. Vladek and Artie could not support each other in the crucial moment. Comic
expresses the Artie s anger at Anja and his pain left to dealt alone with the overwhelming feeling of
losing mother.
Another form of guilt I see is from the Vladek toward Anja. In 1944, he and Anja left Srodula and
moved to Sosnowiec. After they left Srodula, all their hiding places were temporary and unreliable.
Vladek realized if Germany occupies the country there is nothing left for him and Anja in Poland and
there will be no chance for them to live without fear. so Vladek tells Mrs. Kawka he would do
anything to get out of Poland and Mrs. Kawka tells him about smugglers, taking people to Hungary.
But as the comic expresses she was clearly involved. However, Vladek so eager to get to Hungary, he
could not see that. Meeting with the smugglers, he meets Mr. Mandelbaum, an Spiegelmans who
owned a sweets shop once along with his wife, and his nephew, Abraham. Vladek is not sure whether
to trust the smugglers so, Abraham volunteers to go with the smugglers first, then to write if
everything is safe.
Anja, on the other hand felt leaving is too dangerous and insists she will never go with the smugglers
to Hungary. But Vladek refuses to change his mind. He

Holden Caulfield s The Catcher s The Rye
Are 50 s teens able to survive the hurtful but unavoidable transition of becoming a grown up as they
struggle with the changes that come along with it?
JD. Salinger s 1951 book, The Catcher in the Rye, shows us how society treated their confused and
changing teenagers during their transition into adulthood. The book s main character Holden Caulfield
is being pressured into growing up even though he doesn t feel ready, to lead an adult life. He is still
struggling socially and mourning for his deceased brother whose death turned Holden upside down
and into a negative, hopeless person from a young age, which causes him to be distracted, indifferent
and to flunk every school he goes to.
Therefore, Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with a world that is forcing him to change his ways
and grow up because of his age while he struggles with his past, present and future, in this JD Salinger
classic.
Thesis Statement Brainstorm:
1 Salinger s main character Holden, is seen to be struggling with his past, present and future in The
Catcher in the Rye.
2 Holden is seen to be having unspecified negative thoughts about growing up throughout JD Salinger
s famous The Catcher in the Rye.
3 JD Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye s main character Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with a
world that forces him to change his ways because of his age and what it s expected from him while he
is struggling with his past, present and future.

Celebrities Are Bad Role Models
Celebrities are bad role models
Do celebrities make bad role models? I believe they do. Kids see celebrities in the news everyday and
mimic what they do, thinking that they should be like them. But that is wrong. Most celebrities don t
know what they are doing in their life because they have a hard time telling reality from fantasy. They
are like you and me, but people think that they are more than that. Most magazines and movies have
pictures/videos of airbrushed celebrities and when teenager look at these they start believing that
looking like how celebrities do is the only way to be popular and loved.
When girls look at people like Selena Gomez and Taylor swift, they see extremely skinny women that
they think are perfect, therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pop culture icons need to support a drug free program instead of using harmful substances. Programs
like Above the Influence, run by the Office of National Drug Protection, use the media for good
instead of making drugs and alcohol seems acceptable to use. Stars should make it a goal to refrain
from using drugs and drinking excessive amounts of booze because it sends a message to fans that a
life of drugs and alcohol is a satisfactory way to live.
Teenagers believe everything they do is never good enough, They feel as though if they re not star
footballers/world famous singers/A list celebrities, then they ve failed at life. Instead of working to
better the world or focus on their studies to get a good, well paying job, they concentrate on their far
fetched dreams that they probably won t ever succeed at. Teenagers get distracted from their studies
and start believing superficial dreams and therefore ruin their career
They worship them as gods, therefore the bad things they do (drink driving, fighting, hard drugs etc.)

How Is The Roman Republic Democratic
The Roman Republic (509 B.C. 27 B.C.) lasted 482 years, and was a democracy, but exactly how
democratic was it? A democracy is a type of government where the main power is given to the people.
In a democracy, fair elections are held, the people are active, and the same laws apply equally to all
people of the democracy. The Roman Republic was fairly democratic because, all men could vote, and
the people had the final say in the government and military, however, there were fairly undemocratic
parts of the Roman Republic; one being the fact that the voters were disenfranchised due to the people
with more power s votes counted more.
One aspect of the Roman Republic that made it truly democratic was that all men could vote. That
included the poor and freed slaves. Furthermore, as stated by Professor Fergus Miller, Every adult
male citizen, unless, specifically disqualified, had a vote, and there was no formal exclusion of the
poor. Free slaves could also vote... This clearly shows that the Roman Republic was, in fact,
democratic because voting rights are extremely important in a democracy and everyone (with the
exception of women) could vote. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated in The Histories by Polybius, There is, however, a part left to the people (the Assemblies),
and it is a most important one. It is the people in the Assemblies who grant office to those who deserve
it through elections. The Assemblies also have the final say in passing or repealing laws, and most
important of all is that they make the final decision on the question of peace or war. This suggests that
the Roman Republic was very democratic because the people, do, in our modern day society, what a
president would. In summary, people had the final say in the government, making the Roman
Republic exceedingly

The Locked Door Gladwell Summary
In the second chapter The Locked Door: The Secret Life of Snap Decisions . Gladwell delivered a
story about a retired tennis player. The player realized that every time he watch a tennis game, he can
predict when the server about to double fault. Gladwell explains that the tennis story proves how
important snap judgment is; he believes those snap judgments are extremely quick so that it can use
the smallest slice of experience. But at the same time they are unconscious. Because snap judgments
are unconscious, people often cannot rationalize them and thus do not trust them. It s one thing to
acknowledge the enormous power of snap judgments and thin slices but quite another to place our
trust in something so seemingly mysterious . Gladwell states that the Getty ... Show more content on

Another section in this chapter describes how we rarely understand why our unconscious works the
way it does. Gladwell illustrates with an example of Ted William, the greatest hitter of all time, when
he asked about the secret of his success he answered that he could track the ball right onto the bat.
Later on, when he confronted with the fact that human beings cannot track the ball onto the bat. He
said, Well, I guess it just seemed like I could do that . The author continues with the conclusion that
we have the tendency to explain almost everything, even when we do not have real explanation.
According to Gladwell, this is known as storytelling problem , and therefore we are better off by
saying I do not know more often. In the third chapter The Warren Harding Error: Why We Fall For
Tall, Dark, and Handsome Men . Gladwell uses Warren Harding, America s 29th President, as an
example of the disadvantages of thin slicing. He continues to describe how handsome and elegant
Harding was, and how he was elected president based on

We Will Pay You Langston Hughes Analysis
Langston Hughes, a writer during the Harlem Renaissance, argued that the Negro artist works against
an undertow of sharp criticism and misunderstanding from his own group and unintentional bribes
from the whites. Oh, be respectable, write about nice people, show how good we are, say the Negroes.
Be stereotyped, don t go too far, don t shatter our illusions about you, don t amuse us too seriously. We
will pay you, say the whites. Hughes then writes in response to these pressures that ... it is the duty of
the younger Negro artist ... to change through the force of his art that old whispering I want to be
white, hidden in the aspirations of his people, to Why should I want to be white? I am a Negro and

However, Hurston s writing also creates a positive perspective on black culture. Hurston describes the
town in the Everglades through the eyes of Janie, writing that no matter how rough [joking and
teasing] was, people seldom got mad, because everything was done for a laugh , and everybody loved
to hear Ed Dockery, Bootyny, and Sop de Bottom in a skin game (134). Rather than showing the town
s lack of seriousness in a negative way, Hurston depicts the town as full of laughter, love, and
lighthearted games. The characters of Ed Dockery, Bootyny, and Sop de Bottom live in the Everglades
with Janie and Tea Cake and are a central part of the community. Even though the Everglades town is
stereotypically black, Hurston presents this town and its blackness in a positive light. In addition,
Janie is accepted quickly by the town; she can listen and laugh and even talk some if she wanted to
and can tell big stories herself from listening to the rest (134). In Eatonville, whose African American
residents act less stereotypically black and pretentiously try to emulate white people, Janie is unable to
assimilate in such a community. However, the more stereotypically black town in the Everglades is
much more accepting towards Janie. By presenting the culture of the Everglades in a favorable way
from Janie s point of view, Hurston shows pride for conventional black culture. The town in the
Everglades is also illustrated as lively and jubilant; specifically, nights in the town have pianos living
three lifetimes in one , blues made and used right on the spot , dancing, fighting, singing, crying,
laughing, winning and losing love every hour . The town s residents work all day for money, fight all
night for love , and the rich black earth cling[s] to bodies and bit[es]

The Removal Of The Screening Current Induced Field
This paper presents the details of a recent study on the removal of the screening current induced field
(SCIF) in a pancake type noninsulated high temperature superconductor (HTS) coil (NI coil). To
determine the SCIF in the NI coil, the magnetic flux density (Bz) was calculated using the equivalent
circuit model of the coil and compared to Bz obtained empirically. The experimental results exhibited
that the SCIF elimination in the NI coil enhanced upon increasing the amplitude and frequency of the
AC current being supplied to the background coil. Moreover, the SCIF in the NI coil could be
successfully removed by applying the appropriate intensity of an external AC magnetic field. This is
because the magnetization direction of SCIF completely changed from radial to spiral, and the
phenomenon is termed the vortex shaking effect. Overall, this study confirmed that the SCIF in a
pancake type NI coil can be effectively removed by exposing the coil to an external AC magnetic
field.
1. Introduction
The second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductor (CC) is
regarded as a promising material for the development of ultrahigh field magnets for use in nuclear
magnetic resonance (NMR) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. This is because the
dependence of the critical current (Ic) in the CC on external magnetic fields is lower than those in its
low temperature counterparts [1 4]. However, in the case of a quench, the 2G HTS magnet is

The Narrative Paradigm By Scott Stroud
Scott Stroud in his article Multivalent narratives: Extending the Narrative Paradigm with Insights from
Ancient Indian Philosophical Texts critiques the narrative paradigm by pointing out its weaknesses
and proposing revisions to the existing paradigm using ancient Indian philosophical narratives. Stroud
claims that Fisher s paradigm is too limiting and conservative when dealing with foreign concepts and
texts. The narrative paradigm does not allow people to experience new stories that may differ from
their traditional stories challenging their values and/ or accepting new ones (Stroud, p. 372). Our
judgment of a narrative is based on what we believe is just or true. New ideas or thoughts or values are

Knowing that man is separate from Dattatreya will lead to the mind being cleansed and salvation. This
narrative also says that Dattatreya is of this world, residing in everything of earth. The story argues
against the separation of the subordinate and the deity, saying, There is no Shepard, no flock (as cited
in Stroud, 2002). The deity tells man in order to achieve salvation he must meditate and work, but man
should do neither in order to gain reward, taking care to chose actions wisely as those choices will
impact future salvation (Stroud, 2002, p. 382). This text is full of contradictions; the deity is separate
from man, the deity is with man and of the world, meditate and work to gain salvation, meditation and
work are not important and will not gain man salvation. The second text is equally confusing and
contradictory within itself and to the first text. The Devi Gita is a goddess of divine power who urges
the reader to be devout only to her. She says she is also separate from the world, only later in the text
to claim she is of this world and with man. Meditation is important to achieve salvation however
meditating in hopes of salvation or to please the ego is not pleasing to her. Stroud claims that the
narrative paradigm as it is now is not efficient in rendering an outcome for the western reader of these
texts, which involve incoherence

Taking a Look at Domestic Violence Essays
Domestic violence is when an intimate partner, such as a spouse or a person you cohabit with;
physical, sexually or psychologically abuses you. Abusers come from all different types of
backgrounds. Domestic Violence affects all races, ethnicities and genders. It occurs in dating
relationships, in marriages, in heterosexual relationships, and in homosexual relationships. However, it
is more common among women, 1of 50 women ages 16 to 24 are victims of intimate violence, and 10
times as many women are seriously hurt by current or former lovers. (Gelles and Cornell 1990;

The entire cycle may happen in one day or it may take weeks or months. It is different for every
relationship and not all relationships follow the cycle many report a constant state of siege with little
relief.
This cycle has three parts:
1. Tension building phase Tension builds over common domestic issues like money, children or jobs.
Verbal abuse begins. The victim tries to control the situation by pleasing the abuser, giving in or
avoiding the abuse. None of these will stop the violence. Eventually, the tension reaches a boiling
point and physical abuse begins.
2. Acute Battering episode when the tension peaks, the physical violence begins. It is usually triggered
by the presence of an external event or by the abuser s emotional state but not by the victim s
behavior. This means the start of the battering episode is unpredictable and beyond the victim s
control. However, some experts believe that in some cases victims may unconsciously provoke the
abuse so they can release the tension, and move on to the honeymoon phase.
3. The Honeymoon Phase first, the abuser is ashamed of his behavior. He expresses remorse, tries to
minimize the abuse and might even blame it on the partner. He may then exhibit loving, kind behavior
followed by apologies, generosity and helpfulness. He will genuinely attempt to convince the partner
that the abuse will not happen

Cosimo De Medici s Influence On Florence
The Medici family earned their status by commerce rather than warfare, marriage or inheritance, and
they were the first princely dynasty to do so. Cosimo de Medici never held office, but ran Florence
through his wealth and strategic mind from 1434 1537. He played a large part in the patronage of the
arts and the political development of the city. His patronage allowed men to achieve such impressive
architecture. Brunelleschi, for example, who restored the church at San Lorenzo. Cosimo centered the
city around cultural and creative achievements. He allowed Florence to enter the age of the
Renaissance by proving himself and his policies to the people, and making the citizens of Florence
proud.
Cosimo de Medici was born on September 27, 1389 in the city of Florence, Italy. He was also known
as Cosimo the Elder, Cosimo il Vecchio (Italian), and Pater Patriae (Latin), meaning Father of his
country (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). Cosimo received the best education available during the

Homeland Security Vs Homeland Security
Much has been discussed about homeland security and homeland defense regarding their differences
and similarities, but regardless of how the two are related, the fact remains that they both serve the
purpose of protecting and defending America, making our citizens safe, and to protect the integrity of
our infrastructure, rendering our nation a safe place to live and build family traditions. The ultimate
purpose of both Homeland Defense and Homeland Security is to protect, defend, and assist with the
safety and security of the citizens of the United States. One purpose specifically caters to the
protection of our citizens in land and the other focuses on the protection of citizens from overseas.
Homeland Defense operates within the United States and outside the United States to provide critical
protection to the country against terrorism. Homeland defense is the task the military is handed
outside of the United States. For the purpose of defending and protecting our nation, the reason why
military personnel are sent all over the world to fight radical extremists who pose a threat to our
nation. They also monitor any other entity who can potentially become a threat to our country.
Homeland defense represents the protection of our territory, population, and critical infrastructure by
deterring and defending against foreign and domestic threats, supporting civil authorities for crisis and
consequence management, and helping to ensure the continuance of critical national assets
(Department of the Army 1999, 1). (Noftsinger, 2007)
The Department of Defense main objective is to provide the military forces necessary to protect the
security of our country. To protect our natural resources, installations, and facilities by discouraging
and preventing acts of terror against the American public. To support the overall mission by fighting
radical extremist who plan and carry out attacks on American soil claiming the lives of innocent
citizens. Our military servicemembers operate from overseas and within our states protecting our
borders, skies, ports, and shores from terrorist who wish to plant fear and create chaos in our nation.

Lean Manufacturing Is Not Just A Production Method
Introduction
Lean manufacturing is not just a production method. It is a way of life. One could say that it is simply
a way of providing customers what they want, at a price they can afford, when they want it (Leaning
Forward). However, it is much more than just satisfying the customer s needs.
Lean manufacturing originated after WWII in Japan to help revitalize their manufacturing industry.
The industry was booming in the United States because of the revolutionary invention of Henry Ford s
Model T and the creation of the flow production, but the lack of variety created demand and Toyota
answered that demand (Lean).
Kiichiro Toyoda and his team at Toyota realized by modifying the system they could make the process

Pull Flow is the concept of a continuous flow of production and enables operators to identify and pull
defective products from the production line. Kaizen is the approach used by employees to implement
continuous improvements to a manufacturing process (Gembutsu).
Muda is the concept of wasting resources to create something with no value. The types of wasted
include over production time, inventory, transportation, process inefficiency, defects, and unnecessary
motion (Vorne Industries).
Jidoka is the process of identifying a defect before getting to the finished product and is accomplished
by automation. It is carried out by the automation knowing what a product defect is and alerting an
operator (Gembutsu).
Takt is the method used to align the customers demand with the production and is paced by using Takt
Time. Takt Time is the pace of production and is calculated by dividing production time by customer
demand (Gembutsu).
Procedures
The Spartan Assembly Line involved several processes. To start the assembly process the orders or the
colors of the cars were called out to the paint process. After the paint was applied to the car, the body
went to glass and then onto accessories, where the parts like the front grill were added.
While these processes were going on, two other processes were also going on. When the orders or
paint colors were called out, the chassis

Imperialism In Nigeria
The history of Nigeria has been reshaped and affected by the presence of external sources interfering
with Nigerian culture and tradition. Europeans often colonized Nigeria for its central role in the slave
trade, as well as for land and valuable resources. In particular, British occupation and Imperialization
has had a significant impact on the country s history. Colonization benefited the Nigerian people
considerably, allowing the British to then likewise benefit. The British did manage to create for
themselves a hefty profit, and the Nigerian people did also reap the benefits of British colonization.
However, the British did not always rule justly and fairly, eventually leading to the collapse of British
influence in Nigeria.

For instance, directly after the British took control of Nigeria they split it up into two territories, the
Protectorate of Northern Nigeria and the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. This creates a country that
is literally divided, increasing political and ethnic tensions. This system of governing Nigeria had built
in contradictions, forcing the Nigerian government into a sophisticated form of local government.
While colonization encouraged industry in Nigeria it also forced many people in the country to
migrate to work elsewhere (Falola 17), away from their tribes and culture into more industrialized
cities. The British were constantly paranoid of a possible revolt from the Nigerian peoples, so to
prevent any united opposition to its authority, the British adopted a divide and conquer policy (Falola
40), keeping Nigerian groups separate from one another as much as possible. This only increased the
amount of tribal and cultural diversity, which during this time period usually resulted in disagreements
leading to war. Western culture and education by Christian missionaries was not always accepted, it
often was strongly resisted by Muslim leaders (Falola 67), again only creating additional problems
among the peoples. Because Western education and Christianity spread rapidly in the south and not

Road Pricing Necessary, Unhealthy Rhetorical Analysis
In Daniel Wood s article Road Pricing Necessary, Contentious and coming to Vancouver, he provides a
glimpse into the possible uproar that will come of introducing road pricing to the city of Vancouver.
The masses of people who commute by transit have to pay for it while drivers on the other hand, pay
nothing to use the roads. Woods goes on to describe examples of how drivers get charged for using the
roads in other parts of the world and how it helps to reduce congestion and encourage the use of public
transit. Woods states that in Vancouver, the roads have been free since the beginning of time.
Consequentially, the public does not really comprehend the concept of road pricing let alone have any
experience with it and without the proper education,

An Excerpt From The Story Of Anne Frank
Screeech! The sound of a car from below freezes all eight people living in a hidden annex, as they
look to each other for comfort. The best theme from the story of Anne Frank is that everyone needs
someone with whom to share life s experiences, although others may believe that a better theme is that
people need a sense of direction in their lives. Everybody needs someone to lean on, and no one can
get through the trials of life alone. The first piece of evidence to support the theme everyone needs
someone with whom to share life s experiences can be found on page 488 in the Anne Frank play. Mr.
Frank has just returned from his time in concentration camp during the war and he is talking to his
friend Miep Gies. His entire family was killed during the second world war. So now Miep is one of the

The Importance Of Sovereignty In Canada
How is the arctic important to Canada and what does this entail? The north contains multiple
resources that are only continuing to grow with the melting of the northwest passage. With this
opening can this be used as an economic adventure in Canada, like the Suez Canal. Or, does the
opening of the passage turn this into a dispute of sovereignty between states? Canadians are known
around the world for being polite, apologetic and of course they re known as, We The North. Canada
has the second largest land mass in the world, at almost ten million kilometers squared, where three
and a half million kilometers, are that of the north(1). There is a wide variety of resources that any of
the other states would like to be a part of. Ranging from forestry, to fishery, natural water, and mining.
Mining being the largest of all these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For that, what must be done by Canada to keep their sovereignty over their land, and not have other
states intrude and take the north as their own. If sovereignty is up for grabs, it needs to be discussed,
what is sovereignty, and how does a state have complete sovereignty over itself. Sovereignty is
defined as the supremacy of authority exercised by a state over its population and its territory. (4)
However, this can be done in many ways, and Canada is dealing with this in three different teirs
within the north. Canada will continue to have the north inhabited and have employment for those
living there. Secondly, it will endorse the north as a tourist area, for those of other countries to visit
and enjoy the natural beauties that are held there. Lastly, it will deploy its military in multiple ways.
The military will be used to hold operations within the northern territories, employ rangers
throughout, conduct fly past using the Air Force, and maintain bases at its most northern point on a
continual basis.

Mine Okubo Summary
In 1942 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued an order to create Internment Camps for people of
Japanese descent living in the USA. Sixty two percent of these people were US Citizens and some of
them had only 1/16th Japanese Ancestry. One hundred and thirty thousand people were relocated to
these camps without any proof of wrongdoing or just trial. Mine Okubo was one of these people and
despite the inhumane conditions and unjustness of her imprisonment, she made sketches and wrote
about her experience in the camps. Later she released a graphic novel titled Citizen 13660. The way
that Japanese Americans Behaved and Experienced the Interment Camp programs reveals elements of
their culture and community. Interestingly, the style of writing in this book is filled with some blunt
comedy, along with detailed black and white sketches. The timeline of the book starts from when she
was living in Europe, then migrates the USA and thereafter is inducted into the camps. The whole
reason that the Internment Camps were created was because of irrational fears of the US public and
government towards Japanese people. Some of the earlier lines in here book show the attitude of
Caucasians toward her and her people. She talks about the events before she went to the camps with
people and the media using slurs and the initial voluntary migration ... Show more content on

For these people who stayed, they valued their community over everything. They could move
somewhere else, they could abandon everything but the US at the time was still full of racism. After
the deportation order, Okubo talks about people having to sell or give away most of her belongings
and property, along with the predators who took advantage of this. On her way to the camps she
mentions a group of Japanese university students singing on the bus, showing a sense of community
while uncertain about their

sector which employed 280,000 people and generated $25 billion per year. Hotel occupancy fell below
40% and 3,000 employees were laid off in the week following the attacks. (Wiki Economics,
History.com) Health effects of the September 11, 2001 attacks were almost non existent at first, but
years and years of study showed that people who worked around the debris from long periods of time
are much more likely to develop PTSD. Some heart conditions and respiratory disease have been
linked to the September 11, 2001 attacks, but nothing has been proven. Some mental illness exists as a
result of the attacks, but 80% of the mental illness was caused from being hit in the head with debris
or from actually falling with the tower. (NYC Health) As a result of the September 11, 2001 attacks
we invaded Afghanistan and started a war with Iraq as well. These wars affected the culture of our
nation greatly! Families were split as loved ones were lost in that war. Roughly 3.1 million Americans
entered military service between 2001 and 2011. Nearly 2 million soldiers were deployed in that time
and more than 6,000 American troops were killed. Roughly 44,000 were wounded. Of the wounded,

Exothermic Reaction Lab Report
An Exothermic reaction releases heat which causes the temperature of the surroundings to increase.
An endothermic reaction absorbs heat and cools the surrounding. (UC DAVIS CHEM WIKI
organisation, 2015) W Reactants in exothermic reactions covert chemical energy to heat energy which
causes the temperature to rise. Reactants gain energy in the endothermic process which comes from
the substances used in the reaction and the reaction gets cold. Eventually, heat is absorbed from the
surroundings and the mixture returns to room temperature. These reactions can be divided by chemical
reaction and physical reaction. Chemical reactions are chemicals or substances which change to one or
more other substances. While, physical reaction includes a change ... Show more content on

This can be divided in a single and double displacement reaction. (Anne Marie Helmenstine, 2015)
Potassium equation contains four elements: K, Cl, H and O. On the products side CI is reacting with
the H and the K with an OH. Thus, there has been switching between the compounds. This is a double
displacement reaction. If we compare that to Mg+ HCl where you get MgCl2 +H2 which is a single
displacement reaction because only the Cl has switched between the compounds.
CONCLUSION
The aim was to conduct, observe and record whether chemical reactions are exothermic or
endothermic. It was hypothesized that experiment 1 and 2 will be exothermic because each experiment
involves a chemical element and water reacting, which means giving off heat. On the other hand,
experiment 3 and 4 will be endothermic since cold reaction products start to gain heat from the
surroundings, eventually coming back to room temperature. This was supported by the changes in
temperature as shown in the results. This also determined that experiments 1 and 2 were exothermic
and experiments 3 and 4 were endothermic. Therefore, my hypothesis was

Natchez Trace History
The Natchez Trace was the overland coffle that led slave caravans, from Virginia, Maryland,
Kentucky, and Tennessee to the Forks of the Road market of Natchez. Delaney arrived in Mississippi
through the second middle passage. We also believe he traveled with other slaves down the Old
Natchez Trace . According to the National Park Service the Trace as it is known greatly supported the
slave trade of the second middle passage. The Natchez Trace was possibly the most recent legal slave
route in North America. From the 1830s through the Civil War, many thousands of bondspeople were
transported from the southeast (Maryland to Florida) to the new lands of the old southwest
(Mississippi and Alabama). The most efficient route for this was often the Natchez Trace where, at the
end of their journey, they would be sold at the Forks of the Road slave market. ... Show more content

We are certain that the stories of the dangers that lurked on the Trace during the days of slavery were
relayed from generation to generation. Today, The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444 mile recreational

corridor used by American Indians, Kaintucks, European settlers, slave traders, soldiers, and future
presidents.

Cranberry contains high levels of nutrients and bioactive molecules that have health‐promoting
properties. The purpose of the present studies was to determine if cranberry extracts (CEs) contain
phytochemicals that exert anti‐inflammatory effects. The human monocytic cell line THP‐1 was
treated with two CEs (CE and 90MX) and subsequently challenged with Lipopolysaccharides (LPS).
Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF α) expression was decreased in the CE‐treated cells, indicative of an
anti‐inflammatory effect. Gene expression microarrays identified several immune‐related genes that

urinary tract infections (Wang et al. 2012; Blumberg et al. 2013; Foxman et al. 2015), oxidative stress
and cardiometabolic risk factors such as reducing C‐reactive protein and lowering blood pressure
(Basu et al. 2011; Dohadwala et al. 2011; Novotny et al. 2015). As cranberry is a natural food product
and not a drug, the effect seen is often mild but that is consistent with the recommendation for a food
with health components that is consumed as part of a healthy balanced lifestyle.
In vitro evidence has shown the antioxidant potential of cranberry phenolic compounds including
protection of human microvascular endothelial cells against ROS, and HepG2 cells from inflammatory
insults and reduced glycation (Caton et al. 2010; Crozier et al. 2010; Liu et al. 2011; Watson et al.
2014; MartĂn et al. 2015). A recent publication also showed the bioavailability and bioactivity of
cranberry phenolics and metabolites from consuming cranberry juice beverage (McKay et al. 2015).
The protective effect of these compounds may be related to their function in sequestering ROS and/or
maintaining the cell components in their correct redox state, but

Ideal Gas Formula Lab Report
Abstract: This experiment was performed to determine the molar mass of an unknown using the ideal
gas equation. The measurements needed to determine the molar mass were obtained by heating the
unknown to 90 degrees Celsius while recording the required measures such as the mass, volume, and
temperature as the unknown became a gas. Then the measurements were inserted into the ideal gas
equation PV=nRT. Using the ideal gas formula and measurements determined the molar mass was
found by rearranging the formula leaving the unknown s molar mass of ethylene glycol.
Procedure: In preparation 600mL of water was added to a beaker then an Erlenmeyer flask was placed

How common is acne vulgaris, also know as basically acne, in the human population? Simply put, it is
extremely common. It is unlikely an individual goes about life without experiencing or witnessing
acne. Acne is an incessant skin condition that influences several individuals sooner or later within
their life. Particularly it is the event of septic or swollen sebaceous glands in the skin; specifically, an
ailment portrayed by red blemishes on the face, predominant essentially among young individuals
(Galderma, 2013). It causes spots to create on the skin, for the most part on the face, back and mid

Acne vulgaris, ordinarily alluded to as pimples, is created by obstructed pores as a consequence of
sebum development and microorganisms like bacteria. It is important that individuals be informed
about acne vulgaris because the skin condition can result in scarring and spread of infection and the
first step to avoiding these things is awareness of the skin condition itself. Despite the regularity,
several individuals don t understand the basic principles of how acne vulgaris is formed and false
guidance leads to an increase of severity for the skin condition. Overall, advisement of the skin
condition can result in the diminishment of the countless struggles and obstacles individuals face

water is fundamental to human health, the environment and the economy. Canada is a water rich
country and with an estimated 7% of the world s renewable freshwater supply. overall national
freshwater quality is fair and Good. However, due to about 60% of the supply flows northward, while
most of the population is located in the southern regions. This change in temperature, rainfall and
snowfall can cause water quantities in rivers, lakes and reservoirs rise and fall throughout the year,
resulting in flooding or water shortages(Canada, 2015). 4. Are there disputes, violence or wars over

Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing...
Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle
Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle .
To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New
Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the
Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of
time unnoticeable. Other Godard ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the
viewer that despite the protagonist s fixation on the past, time continues to move on and that moments
in the present are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wears the same type of cloths, has the same hair do and her rather eccentric attitude to life also
corresponds to that of her French counterpart.
The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the
general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry
was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Express was clearly
not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and
appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel
against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both
of the film directors have something in common with each other.
Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every
material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but
it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong
Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist
government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of
a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive.

Magical Realism In Like Water For Chocolate
The title of this novel, Like Water for Chocolate, is also a simile for the burning passion Tita and
Pedro had for each other. In Latin countries, like water for chocolate mean to boil water to the right
temperature in order to make chocolate milk. Figuratively it is a metaphor for state of sexual arousal.
Despite their true love for each other, Tita and Pedro had to restrain their feelings under the eyes of
society. Their love is like the boiling point of water.
As the famous endorser for magical realism, Like Water for Chocolate is filled with mystical elements
camouflaged into the mundane setting. Magical realism has brought this forbidden love to its greatest
extent by using lust to explain the reasons behind their thoughts and actions.

The Soviet Prison Labor Camp System
Solzhenitsyn envisioned and captured the persona of the Soviet prison labor camp system by
describing as a chain of hidden islands amongst the USSR landscape. Solzhenitsyn sees himself lifting
the shroud that the Soviet regime tried to hide the gulags behind by telling his story of his time in the
gulags. Reading his book gave the reader the sense of reading a forbidden text, something surrounded
in secrecy. Solzhenitsyn develops themes throughout the book. These fetid and morbid islands would
see millions of unfortunate visitors forced to slave away at one of the world s largest and fastest
infrastructure and industrialization builds in the history of mankind perpetuated by the will of Stalin
and his secret police the NKVD. In this beautifully and treacherously written story, Alexander
Solzhenitsyn goes from his glory filled days as a distinguished officer to just an exhausted instrument
of the Soviet state. Solzhenitsyn describes early on in the book about the cryptic nature of the gulag.
No one knows and no one asks about the gulags. The only way to get to the fabled islands is to be a
member within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a conscripted guard, or one of the millions sent to their
doom. This same mysticism is projected well into his work, as the Gulag Archipelago was a banned
piece of work by the communist party. The reader can feel a risky nature to reading the novel.

Essay An Analysis Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair
In the early 1900 s life for America s new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry
was explored by Upton Sinclair s novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a serial piece in
the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair s novel was initially found too graphic and
shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form until 1906. In this
paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and on what I feel Sinclair s
purpose was for this novel. In the early 1900 s a newly arrived immigrant worker faced numerous
challenges that had to be overcome. Often times literally arriving with the clothes on their back and a
few meager dollars, it was crucial for these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with
them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions outside
the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new immigrants was acquiring and
then keeping steady work. Although the Packingtown in Chicago was in a constant state of activity,
the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply and demand made it difficult for some to
find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to stand at the plant doors for weeks before being
selected. And once a person was chosen to be a worker, they had to labor at a fever pitch to make sure
they were retained. That being said, the worker s problems did not end once they found steady
employment. Employers were harsh and unforgiving in how they treated their employees. For
example, if an employee was one minute late they were penalized an hours pay. If they were 20
minutes late they forfeited their employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the
company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay

  • 2. Organizational Change In Eastman Kodak 1. Introduction Organizational change is the movement of an organization away from its current state and toward some desired future state to increase its effectiveness (Lunenburg, 2010). Changes in the environment often require changes within the organization driving within that environment. Change fatigue is one of the challenges organization face. Change may occur in order to remain competitive in response to new competition. Change fatigue is rampant, and its aggravated by a natural tendency to distrust change that is imposed from above (Morgan, 2001). This report will discuss about Eastman Kodak Company as the organization that failed because it did not go through some organizational change or resistance to change. 2. Overview of ... Organizational Culture Organizational Culture is a pattern of shared basic assumptions that was learned by a group as it solved its problems of external adaption and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to recognize, think, and feel in relation to those problems (Schein, 2004). Historically, Kodak was a business built on a culture of innovation and change, which made them very successful, but as achievement grew so did their complacency. The deep rooted source of Kodak s problem was a culture of self satisfaction . Kodak was critically destroyed by its culture, although it was the quick progress of digital photo technology that is commonly blamed for Kodak s demise (Riley, 2015). On the other hand, Kodak s new leadership has not clearly addressed what are Kodak s essential features and neglected the need to transform the Kodak s culture destinies, which may be any possibility of Kodak future succeed. Therefore, the culture of Kodak was unable to operationalize and launch the ideas that would eventually force their demise (Simonelli, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Maus trigger me more than Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Half of a Yellow Sun since my country has been through similar experience. My country is the Republic of Korea, also called South Korea. It is small country located between powerful countries like China, Russia, and Japan. Thus, it is a place where war never stopped even till now. Too many times, we were too close to losing our country and one time, in 1910 we actually did. Lasted for Thirty five years, it is called the Korea under Japanese rule (or Japanese colonization). Just like the Germans did to the Jews, Japan did the same thing to the Korea maybe worse. Vladek and Artie could not support each other in the crucial moment. Comic expresses the Artie s anger at Anja and his pain left to dealt alone with the overwhelming feeling of losing mother. Another form of guilt I see is from the Vladek toward Anja. In 1944, he and Anja left Srodula and moved to Sosnowiec. After they left Srodula, all their hiding places were temporary and unreliable. Vladek realized if Germany occupies the country there is nothing left for him and Anja in Poland and there will be no chance for them to live without fear. so Vladek tells Mrs. Kawka he would do anything to get out of Poland and Mrs. Kawka tells him about smugglers, taking people to Hungary. But as the comic expresses she was clearly involved. However, Vladek so eager to get to Hungary, he could not see that. Meeting with the smugglers, he meets Mr. Mandelbaum, an Spiegelmans who owned a sweets shop once along with his wife, and his nephew, Abraham. Vladek is not sure whether to trust the smugglers so, Abraham volunteers to go with the smugglers first, then to write if everything is safe. • 4. Holden Caulfield s The Catcher s The Rye Are 50 s teens able to survive the hurtful but unavoidable transition of becoming a grown up as they struggle with the changes that come along with it? JD. Salinger s 1951 book, The Catcher in the Rye, shows us how society treated their confused and changing teenagers during their transition into adulthood. The book s main character Holden Caulfield is being pressured into growing up even though he doesn t feel ready, to lead an adult life. He is still struggling socially and mourning for his deceased brother whose death turned Holden upside down and into a negative, hopeless person from a young age, which causes him to be distracted, indifferent and to flunk every school he goes to. Therefore, Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with a world that is forcing him to change his ways and grow up because of his age while he struggles with his past, present and future, in this JD Salinger classic. Thesis Statement Brainstorm: 1 Salinger s main character Holden, is seen to be struggling with his past, present and future in The Catcher in the Rye. 2 Holden is seen to be having unspecified negative thoughts about growing up throughout JD Salinger s famous The Catcher in the Rye. 3 JD Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye s main character Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with a world that forces him to change his ways because of his age and what it s expected from him while he is struggling with his past, present and future. Kids see celebrities in the news everyday and mimic what they do, thinking that they should be like them. But that is wrong. Most celebrities don t know what they are doing in their life because they have a hard time telling reality from fantasy. They are like you and me, but people think that they are more than that. Most magazines and movies have pictures/videos of airbrushed celebrities and when teenager look at these they start believing that looking like how celebrities do is the only way to be popular and loved. • 6. How Is The Roman Republic Democratic The Roman Republic (509 B.C. 27 B.C.) lasted 482 years, and was a democracy, but exactly how democratic was it? A democracy is a type of government where the main power is given to the people. In a democracy, fair elections are held, the people are active, and the same laws apply equally to all people of the democracy. The Roman Republic was fairly democratic because, all men could vote, and the people had the final say in the government and military, however, there were fairly undemocratic parts of the Roman Republic; one being the fact that the voters were disenfranchised due to the people with more power s votes counted more. One aspect of the Roman Republic that made it truly democratic was that all men could vote. That included the poor and freed slaves. Furthermore, as stated by Professor Fergus Miller, Every adult male citizen, unless, specifically disqualified, had a vote, and there was no formal exclusion of the poor. Free slaves could also vote... This clearly shows that the Roman Republic was, in fact, democratic because voting rights are extremely important in a democracy and everyone (with the exception of women) could vote. ... The player realized that every time he watch a tennis game, he can predict when the server about to double fault. Gladwell explains that the tennis story proves how important snap judgment is; he believes those snap judgments are extremely quick so that it can use the smallest slice of experience. But at the same time they are unconscious. Because snap judgments are unconscious, people often cannot rationalize them and thus do not trust them. It s one thing to acknowledge the enormous power of snap judgments and thin slices but quite another to place our trust in something so seemingly mysterious . Gladwell states that the Getty ... Hurston describes the town in the Everglades through the eyes of Janie, writing that no matter how rough [joking and teasing] was, people seldom got mad, because everything was done for a laugh , and everybody loved to hear Ed Dockery, Bootyny, and Sop de Bottom in a skin game (134). Rather than showing the town s lack of seriousness in a negative way, Hurston depicts the town as full of laughter, love, and lighthearted games. The characters of Ed Dockery, Bootyny, and Sop de Bottom live in the Everglades with Janie and Tea Cake and are a central part of the community. Even though the Everglades town is stereotypically black, Hurston presents this town and its blackness in a positive light. In addition, Janie is accepted quickly by the town; she can listen and laugh and even talk some if she wanted to and can tell big stories herself from listening to the rest (134). In Eatonville, whose African American residents act less stereotypically black and pretentiously try to emulate white people, Janie is unable to assimilate in such a community. However, the more stereotypically black town in the Everglades is much more accepting towards Janie. By presenting the culture of the Everglades in a favorable way from Janie s point of view, Hurston shows pride for conventional black culture. The town in the Everglades is also illustrated as lively and jubilant; specifically, nights in the town have pianos living three lifetimes in one , blues made and used right on the spot , dancing, fighting, singing, crying, laughing, winning and losing love every hour . The town s residents work all day for money, fight all night for love , and the rich black earth cling[s] to bodies and bit[es] ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Removal Of The Screening Current Induced Field This paper presents the details of a recent study on the removal of the screening current induced field (SCIF) in a pancake type noninsulated high temperature superconductor (HTS) coil (NI coil). To determine the SCIF in the NI coil, the magnetic flux density (Bz) was calculated using the equivalent circuit model of the coil and compared to Bz obtained empirically. The experimental results exhibited that the SCIF elimination in the NI coil enhanced upon increasing the amplitude and frequency of the AC current being supplied to the background coil. Moreover, the SCIF in the NI coil could be successfully removed by applying the appropriate intensity of an external AC magnetic field. This is because the magnetization direction of SCIF completely changed from radial to spiral, and the phenomenon is termed the vortex shaking effect. Overall, this study confirmed that the SCIF in a pancake type NI coil can be effectively removed by exposing the coil to an external AC magnetic field. 1. Introduction The second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductor (CC) is regarded as a promising material for the development of ultrahigh field magnets for use in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. This is because the dependence of the critical current (Ic) in the CC on external magnetic fields is lower than those in its low temperature counterparts [1 4]. However, in the case of a quench, the 2G HTS magnet is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Narrative Paradigm By Scott Stroud Scott Stroud in his article Multivalent narratives: Extending the Narrative Paradigm with Insights from Ancient Indian Philosophical Texts critiques the narrative paradigm by pointing out its weaknesses and proposing revisions to the existing paradigm using ancient Indian philosophical narratives. Stroud claims that Fisher s paradigm is too limiting and conservative when dealing with foreign concepts and texts. The narrative paradigm does not allow people to experience new stories that may differ from their traditional stories challenging their values and/ or accepting new ones (Stroud, p. 372). Our judgment of a narrative is based on what we believe is just or true. New ideas or thoughts or values are not given a chance using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Knowing that man is separate from Dattatreya will lead to the mind being cleansed and salvation. This narrative also says that Dattatreya is of this world, residing in everything of earth. The story argues against the separation of the subordinate and the deity, saying, There is no Shepard, no flock (as cited in Stroud, 2002). The deity tells man in order to achieve salvation he must meditate and work, but man should do neither in order to gain reward, taking care to chose actions wisely as those choices will impact future salvation (Stroud, 2002, p. 382). This text is full of contradictions; the deity is separate from man, the deity is with man and of the world, meditate and work to gain salvation, meditation and work are not important and will not gain man salvation. The second text is equally confusing and contradictory within itself and to the first text. The Devi Gita is a goddess of divine power who urges the reader to be devout only to her. She says she is also separate from the world, only later in the text to claim she is of this world and with man. Meditation is important to achieve salvation however meditating in hopes of salvation or to please the ego is not pleasing to her. Stroud claims that the narrative paradigm as it is now is not efficient in rendering an outcome for the western reader of these texts, which involve incoherence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Taking a Look at Domestic Violence Essays Domestic violence is when an intimate partner, such as a spouse or a person you cohabit with; physical, sexually or psychologically abuses you. Abusers come from all different types of backgrounds. Domestic Violence affects all races, ethnicities and genders. It occurs in dating relationships, in marriages, in heterosexual relationships, and in homosexual relationships. However, it is more common among women, 1of 50 women ages 16 to 24 are victims of intimate violence, and 10 times as many women are seriously hurt by current or former lovers. The entire cycle may happen in one day or it may take weeks or months. It is different for every relationship and not all relationships follow the cycle many report a constant state of siege with little relief. This cycle has three parts: 1. Tension building phase Tension builds over common domestic issues like money, children or jobs. Verbal abuse begins. The victim tries to control the situation by pleasing the abuser, giving in or avoiding the abuse. None of these will stop the violence. Eventually, the tension reaches a boiling point and physical abuse begins. 2. Acute Battering episode when the tension peaks, the physical violence begins. It is usually triggered by the presence of an external event or by the abuser s emotional state but not by the victim s behavior. This means the start of the battering episode is unpredictable and beyond the victim s control. However, some experts believe that in some cases victims may unconsciously provoke the abuse so they can release the tension, and move on to the honeymoon phase. 3. The Honeymoon Phase first, the abuser is ashamed of his behavior. He expresses remorse, tries to minimize the abuse and might even blame it on the partner. He may then exhibit loving, kind behavior followed by apologies, generosity and helpfulness. He will genuinely attempt to convince the partner that the abuse will not happen ... One could say that it is simply a way of providing customers what they want, at a price they can afford, when they want it (Leaning Forward). However, it is much more than just satisfying the customer s needs. Lean manufacturing originated after WWII in Japan to help revitalize their manufacturing industry. The industry was booming in the United States because of the revolutionary invention of Henry Ford s Model T and the creation of the flow production, but the lack of variety created demand and Toyota answered that demand (Lean). Colonization benefited the Nigerian people considerably, allowing the British to then likewise benefit. While colonization encouraged industry in Nigeria it also forced many people in the country to migrate to work elsewhere (Falola 17), away from their tribes and culture into more industrialized cities. The British were constantly paranoid of a possible revolt from the Nigerian peoples, so to prevent any united opposition to its authority, the British adopted a divide and conquer policy (Falola 40), keeping Nigerian groups separate from one another as much as possible. This only increased the amount of tribal and cultural diversity, which during this time period usually resulted in disagreements leading to war. Sixty two percent of these people were US Citizens and some of them had only 1/16th Japanese Ancestry. One hundred and thirty thousand people were relocated to these camps without any proof of wrongdoing or just trial. Matheny. We only have access to the reports to the Depart of the Interior that were published by the Weber State College Department of Sociology and Anthropology in March 1969 and January 1970. • 31. Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing... Comparing the Narrative and Formal Devices of ChungKing Express and A Bout de Souffle Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A Bout de Souffle . To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques, obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump cut which is evidently taken from Godard s film. His use of the Godard ian jump cut seamlessly blends temporally exclusive scenes together, making the passage of time unnoticeable. Other Godard ian touches include the many shots of clocks, which remind the viewer that despite the protagonist s fixation on the past, time continues to move on and that moments in the present are ... The primary function of the traditional Hong Kong film industry was to churn out movies aimed at the general public and make sure that they bring in a profit. This is much like the French film industry was before the emergence of the French New Wave. However Wai s ChungKing Express was clearly not aimed at the masses, but rather only at the people who have developed a real understanding and appreciation for the art of film. Godard s A Bout de Souffle was also a film which was made to rebel against the old style of French cinema and break the conventions of the film industry. In this way, both of the film directors have something in common with each other. Much of Wai s work has included themes of time passing and how every human emotion, every material object or specifically tinned food expires. This reoccurring matter isn t simply an accident but it carries a very significant political message. At the time that Wai made ChungKing Express , Hong Kong was pending to be handed over from the British democratic powers, to the Chinese communist government. This period was very turbulent for the Hong Kong people as they were in anticipation of a great change, but they didn t know whether it would be negative or positive. ... • 32. Magical Realism In Like Water For Chocolate The title of this novel, Like Water for Chocolate, is also a simile for the burning passion Tita and Pedro had for each other. In Latin countries, like water for chocolate mean to boil water to the right temperature in order to make chocolate milk. Figuratively it is a metaphor for state of sexual arousal. Despite their true love for each other, Tita and Pedro had to restrain their feelings under the eyes of society. Their love is like the boiling point of water. As the famous endorser for magical realism, Like Water for Chocolate is filled with mystical elements camouflaged into the mundane setting. Magical realism has brought this forbidden love to its greatest extent by using lust to explain the reasons behind their thoughts and actions. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. The Soviet Prison Labor Camp System Solzhenitsyn envisioned and captured the persona of the Soviet prison labor camp system by describing as a chain of hidden islands amongst the USSR landscape. Solzhenitsyn sees himself lifting the shroud that the Soviet regime tried to hide the gulags behind by telling his story of his time in the gulags. Reading his book gave the reader the sense of reading a forbidden text, something surrounded in secrecy. Solzhenitsyn develops themes throughout the book. These fetid and morbid islands would see millions of unfortunate visitors forced to slave away at one of the world s largest and fastest infrastructure and industrialization builds in the history of mankind perpetuated by the will of Stalin and his secret police the NKVD. In this beautifully and treacherously written story, Alexander Solzhenitsyn goes from his glory filled days as a distinguished officer to just an exhausted instrument of the Soviet state. Solzhenitsyn describes early on in the book about the cryptic nature of the gulag. No one knows and no one asks about the gulags. The only way to get to the fabled islands is to be a member within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a conscripted guard, or one of the millions sent to their doom. This same mysticism is projected well into his work, as the Gulag Archipelago was a banned piece of work by the communist party. The reader can feel a risky nature to reading the novel. Solzhenitsyn was a very decorated and successful Red Army officer. No prestige can protect a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Essay An Analysis Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair In the early 1900 s life for America s new Chicago immigrant workers in the meat packing industry was explored by Upton Sinclair s novel The Jungle. Originally published in 1904 as a serial piece in the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, Sinclair s novel was initially found too graphic and shocking by publishing firms and therefore was not published in its complete form until 1906. In this paper, I will focus on the challenges faced by a newly immigrated worker and on what I feel Sinclair s purpose was for this novel. In the early 1900 s a newly arrived immigrant worker faced numerous challenges that had to be overcome. Often times literally arriving with the clothes on their back and a few meager dollars, it was crucial for these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While not all of these examples have a direct monetary impact, each of the dealings associated with them does which in turn motivates the parties involved to make decisions and perform actions outside the normal scope for their character. The third challenge faced by new immigrants was acquiring and then keeping steady work. Although the Packingtown in Chicago was in a constant state of activity, the sheer number of available workers and the rule of supply and demand made it difficult for some to find work. It was not uncommon for some workers to stand at the plant doors for weeks before being selected. And once a person was chosen to be a worker, they had to labor at a fever pitch to make sure they were retained. That being said, the worker s problems did not end once they found steady employment. Employers were harsh and unforgiving in how they treated their employees. For example, if an employee was one minute late they were penalized an hours pay. If they were 20 minutes late they forfeited their employment. Worse yet, if they were injured or hurt on the job the company takes no responsibility and the worker is forced to recuperate on their own time without pay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
