When Doubt Waves
As a boy, I lived in New Zealand until age seven. We stayed within a mile or so of the
beach and traveled there often. My sisters and I would dig for pippies (small mussels) for our
lunch and climb into the rock pools to find creatures the tide left for us to discover. The sea
anemones lined these volcanic rock aquariums and always left us in wonder of the vast ocean.
Our family had a chance to visit the beach recently. I got to watch my boys (ages 6 and
4) experience the ocean for the first time. On a very calm day, we played a game in the surf
called “Crack the Egg.” We sat with our legs crossed on the shore line holding our feet. The first
to let go and succumb to the waves “cracks” the egg. The boys and I were jostled every time even
the smallest surge crashed into us. We had a blast and laughed at every topsy-turvy position the
tide left us in. It made me see just how vulnerable and weak we are in the broad scheme of things.
I sat holding my feet while the waves did what they wanted with the rest of me. We rolled and
tumbled in every direction.
This is a great reminder of when doubt waves.
James tells persecuted Christians “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who
gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with
no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the
wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a dou-
ble-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:5-8).
One in doubt experiences the same elements as one sitting in the sea. The foundation is
sand, and a person with this foundation cannot stand when the waves hit. Jesus explains this at
the end of His powerful and sobering sermon on the mountain.
“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish
man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew
and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:26-27).
When experiencing doubt, do everything you can to journey away from the sand and
onto the Rock of our Lord Jesus. There, you are sure to find solid footing and are a lot less likely
to crack under pressure.
How do we stand on the solid rock as opposed to sand? By hearing His words and obey-
ing, especially when doubt waves.

A Mountain Top Moment – Part 2
The challenge to the prophets of Baal was
made. A true test was needed and such a test was
a rare thing indeed. When Jesus was tried by Satan
to cast Himself off the pinnacle of the temple He
replied, “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt
the Lord thy God” (Mt. 4:7). The word
“tempt” (ekpeiraseis) is an intensive form meaning
“to try, or, put to trial, or, proof”. It may have
seemed that the question was already answered.
After all there were 450 prophets of Baal and only
one prophet of Jehovah. However truth is not deter-
mined by counting noses. This would be a test of
both Jehovah and Baal. Each side would be given a
bullock to prepare and each would be given the op-
portunity to call upon their God to see which one
would respond. “And all the people answered
and said, ‘That is a good idea.’”(1 Kgs.18:24b
NASB). Elijah allowed the prophets of Baal to go
first. When there was no response by noon, Elijah
began to mock them, and the prophets of Baal be-
gan to cut themselves so that their blood flowed
freely, but there was no answer.
Then Elijah took his turn. He repaired the altar
of God that had been torn down! There had been
an altar there that was called, even by the hea-
thens, “the altar of Carmel”. This was possibly built
in the time of the judges though some of the rabbis
believed it was built by Saul. Elijah then built a
trench around the altar, laid wood on the altar and
then the bullock, cut in several pieces, was placed
on top of the wood. Next he had water from four
barrels poured over the sacrifice. This was done
three times so that the sacrifice was soaked and the
excess water ran off and filled the trench.
The question is, “Why this use of water?” It
was not used by the prophets of Baal on their bul-
lock. Possibly this was done so there could be no
doubt that this was the act of God in sending fire to
consume it all. Some have pointed out that the
practice of some of the heathen priests was to con-
ceal an opening where a fire was kept to ignite their
sacrifices. The pouring of all this water prevented
any such possibility.
Then Elijah prayed. He prayed for God to an-
swer by fire that the people might know that the
Lord was God and that Elijah was His prophet. The
fire of God then fell and consumed the burnt offer-
ing, the wood, the stones, the dust and the water in
the trench. Evidence has thus been given to prove
beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jehovah is God! It
was the evidence that all had agreed upon in ad-
vance. Immediately the people fell upon their faces
crying, “The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is
God.” With the contest settled, Elijah calls for obe-
dience to God’s will.
