Speaking Today: Graham McDonald I was born in Scotland and grew up in East Kilbride, a town to the south of Glasgow, Scot- land’s largest city. In 1988, I became a Christian after hearing the Gospel preached by the late Rod Carroll of Oklahoma. Rod used book, chapter and verse in every one of his ser- mons and it impressed me that this was the way the Gospel was intended: hearing what the Bible actually said and doing it. The following year I moved to Florida and studied the Bible there for two years (Florida School of Preaching). After graduation in 1991, I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, and in 1994 I moved to Cumbernauld where I cur- rently serve the Lord. Beth and I married in 1995 and we have four children, three of whom have obeyed the gospel. I have preached throughout Scotland as well as Northern Ireland, England, The Netherlands, Italy, Malawi and America. Graham McDonald: Cumbernauld, Scotland Graham McDonald is a missionary in Cumbernauld, Scotland. He attended the Florida School of Preaching in Lakeland, Florida (1989-1991). Graham has preached the Gospel in various places in the U.S. as well as in his native Scotland. He formerly did mission work at the Sighthill Church of Christ in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is presently doing mission work in Cumbernauld, a city with a population of over 60,000. 11 Woodhead Court Westfield, Cumbernauld, G68 9DB SCOTLAND graham@gmcd.net

Because of his imprisonment Paul was able to preach the gospel to those he might never have been able to teach if he were a free man. The Greek word praitorion can be and often was used of the residence of the governor of a province or of the Emperor’s palace in Rome. For example we see this word used in reference to the trial of Jesus. Mt. 27:27 – “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.” John 18:28 – “Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they them- selves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the pass- over.” It could and was used of people, namely the Praetorian Guard, and this is what many scholars believe that Paul was speaking of in this context. Php. 1:13 – “so that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest.” (ASV) It is not likely that Paul would have had the opportunity to preach to this elite group of Roman sol- diers IF he had not been arrested and carried to Rome. So the gospel has advanced instead of being hindered. There were those brethren that had been em- boldened by Paul’s imprisonment to preach the gospel! Prior to this time these same people had been fearful to preach the gospel. Have you ever felt fear at speaking out for the truth about any matter? Have you been fearful that you might be hated, ridiculed, or attacked verbally or physically? Then maybe you were encouraged by some- one taking a stand for the truth unafraid or ashamed at how others might react toward them. Brother Jack Exum told the story of an atheist who ridiculed the belief in a God who was all powerful, all knowing and all loving. Af- ter a scorching speech against such a belief he chal- lenged his audience to stand and defend their belief if there were any present. At first no one moved or uttered a word in challenge. Finally two young girls stood up and began to sin, “stand up, stand up for Jesus ye soldiers of the cross lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss.” Soon a few others joined them, then others and others until the entire audience was standing and sing- ing. Those who had been too timid to say a word were emboldened to finally take a stand for the truth. -to be continued NOVEMBER 3 All ages are invited Class @ 9:30 every Tuesday Invite a friend MENS RETREAT Wyndham Garden Lake Guntersville November 1-2 Sign up sheet in the foyer See David Skelton for cost of events & rooms Opportunities for our Ladies Ladies, we have will do sheets in the foyer for 2020.
