J.J. & Nia Lest We Forget When the Bible records the giving of the Ten Com- mandments a second time in the book of Deuteron- omy, Moses gathered the people of Israel together to instruct them about how they were to behave when God brought them into the land of promise. In Deuter- onomy 8 and beginning at verse 7 he told them “For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills; 8 "a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; 9 "a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 "When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you. 11 "Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today.” Among his instructions was this important command to “beware that you do not forget the Lord your God.” Man is often prone to forgetfulness. Research done at John Hopkins showed that 83% of us have a hard time remembering names; 60% where something is; 57% forget phone numbers and 53% forget words. Forgetting some things can be embarrassing, frustrat- ing and troublesome. However there are some things that we might forget that have far greater conse- quences than frustration or embarrassment. Israel was commanded to be careful lest they forget God but in spite of that warning they did forget. God through His prophet Jeremiah told Israel, “Can a virgin forget her ornaments, Or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number” (Jer. 2:32). The prophet Hosea recorded this same problem when he wrote, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have for- gotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children” (Hosea 4:6). This is the reason that God has given memori- als to His people. There are many such memorials that God had in the past. Some were for His people Israel and some were for all people. The Passover, the twelve stones of memorial and the Ebenezer were for Israel. The rainbow is a memorial for all people to remember God’s promise not to destroy all mankind again by a flood of waters. Today the Lord’s Supper is a memorial for Christians to remember their Lord and what He did in dying for us to provide the way of sal- vation. Thank You Thank you to CIA and all who brought food to the memorial of DeNette Vigil. Her family and friends were very grateful for the out pouring of love shown to them.
