At times it seems that the world is winning in the battle for men’s souls. Because of that many will never become Christians and many who are Christians become discouraged and give up. Many battles may be lost be- fore the war is won. So it was in World War Two and so it will be in the life of the Christian. Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States said, “I would rather lose in a cause that will some day win, than win in a cause that will some day lose.” In chapter 13 of the book of Revelation we read of the great beast that came up out of the sea and “it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to over come them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues and nations” (Rev. 13:7). The picture looks bleak at that point but what helps the Chris- tians to persevere is to remember that the book of Reve- lation does not end with chapter 13. In fact in the very next chapter of that great book one finds this encourage- ment. “This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and re- main faithful to Jesus” (Rev. 14:12. NIV). When one understands that eventually the Chris- tian cause will win and the world will lose, it changes the whole outlook we have on life and what is happening. The Christian needs to maintain a “patient endurance”. Just previous to this statement, John had written, “And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name” (Rev. 14:11). We need to realize the cause of the world will lose and those following that way will suffer torment forever and ever, while the Chris- tian will be victorious and will enjoy the comfort and joy of heaven for ever and ever. In the very next verse John tells us, “Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, ‘they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them’” (Rev. 14:13). The cause of God and His Christ will eventually win and His followers will be blessed, and they will have rest forever. Therefore, let us all maintain our determination to persevere through all that Satan and this world can heap upon us until the end when the faith- ful will be rewarded with an eternity of blessedness with God and His Son Jesus.
