We all have some degree of fear – what does yours look like? A recent poll shows that our top current fears are rooted in COVID, gun violence, health and politics. This weekend’s Gospel of Jesus calming the waters is all about Jesus confronting his disciples about their fear. Why? Because fear has a way of controlling our emotions and leading us to actions that are unloving. For the opposite of fear is not bravery. The opposite of fear is love. Check it out and see what I mean…
Today we celebrate the Feast of All Saints and for some reason we get it stuck in our heads that saints are a completely different kind of human being - when instead, they are very ordinary people like you and I. So, while we may all take a moment to remember our favorite saints – what about all those who may have gone before us and are unrecognized as a saint? So, take a few minutes and see how people like Jessica Robles, Jimmy Willmert, Joe Shuba, and my friend Steve DiGregorio have helped open many eyes to what this Feast Day means. See what I mean…
This Sunday we hear the Gospel of the rich young man, who has followed all of the rules and regulations of his faith, asking Jesus what more does he need to do in order to gain Eternal Life. After all isn’t that what we are all seeking? But it is the wrong question any of us should be asking! What is the right question? And what is the one key word in the response that Jesus gives, that provides us guidance for our own lives? Check it out!
We hear this Sunday the story of Jesus healing the blind man Bartimaeus. On the surface this seems to be just an extraordinary story that attests to the divinity of Christ. But the Bible gives us so many stories of Jesus opening the eyes of those who are blind, there must be more – and there is. To see the deeper meaning of this Gospel will require us to have our eyes opened in a whole new way. What does that look like? Check it out…
On this Thanksgiving Day, as our country and our world continue to climb out of this pandemic, which has gone on far too long, what does “giving thanks” look like? St. Paul gave us all a model called the paradox of gratitude. Why a paradox? And how can a true and personal story of the actions of a small Mennonite Community, post Hurricane Agnes, shed some light on how we are called to actively live a life of gratitude? Check it out…
The Gospel tells us that the disciples had no idea what ‘risen from the dead’ even meant. Do we? Wisdom from Pope Francis…and from children in an African tribe may just open our eyes in a new way so that we can better see how we are connected in our call to make all things new. And that Easter tells us that through the life, death and resurrection of Christ, love wins out over death every time and therefore nothing dies forever and that all that has died in love will be reborn into an even larger love – into the Body of Christ. Check it out…

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.

Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.

The One Who is Not Against Us is For Us.
On Wednesday we celebrated our independence. In 1776, the patriot who is credited with
influencing revolution most was not celebrating. John Dickinson was a founding father of
this nation and his writings galvanized the colonies into action, resulting in revolution. He
was given the title “The Penman of the Revolution,” but you will not find his John Hancock
on the Declaration of Independence. He refused to sign.
How could the Penman of the Revolution refuse to use his pen to sign the very document
producing it? The week after Independence, we all go back to our routines and put our old
glory shorts and t-shirts back in their drawer. For Dickinson, the week following that day
was not a cheerful one and his routine was far from what it once was. The fame and influ-
ence he once had was tarnished and is felt 242 years later. You may not have known who he
was until now. Dickinson would have been considered a Tory, supporter of the tyrannical
crown. One phrase sums up this change in status for Dickinson: “If you’re not with us,
you’re against us.”
Today, the same phrase is touted when a social media user disagrees openly with a popu-
lar belief. One may have the inclination to become a penman of a revolution to annihilate
the tyrant who disagrees. We see mini-revolutions every day on Facebook, Twitter, and
other social media outlets. These outlets have often become antisocial vents for rage and
negativity.
The apostle John came to Jesus with a similar concern about one man who seemed to be a
contradiction to their cause.
“John said to him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we
tried to stop him, because he was not following us.’ But Jesus said, ‘Do not stop him, for no
one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of
me. For the one who is not against us is for us’” (Mark 9:38).
John Dickinson was not against the Founding Fathers – he was for them. A Patriot. In
1775, he wrote an Olive Branch Petition to the tyrant King George III. Dickinson wanted
peace, and he knew that to sign this declaration would mean war. He knew it could mean
war with the Spanish and French, and possibly cause a civil war between the divided colo-
nies (most of these came true). He was not willing to sign at that time. He did this because
of his religious convictions. He was a Quaker and espoused Peace at all costs.
When someone is not with you for whatever reason, stop and ask if they are truly against
you. Think before you click send. Perhaps that person has a background story you don’t un-
derstand. Make peace, because Peace will not just happen.
Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is the penman of our revolution against sin. Today, may we take
on His revolutionary idea when faced with someone who might not be with us.
The one who is not against us is for us.

Woodcutters through the Forrest – Part 2
How many more people were willing to tell the
story of Christ, because of what had happened to
Paul? True, Paul had been hindered to some extent.
He would be chained to one of these soldiers of the
Roman Praetorian Guard. The chain was short in
length. One end was around the wrist of the prisoner
(Paul) and the other end was around the wrist of the
soldier. But Paul also had new opportunities that he
would never have had otherwise. And because of his
limitations other were encouraged to preach.
Two new sources of people to spread the gospel
have become active in preaching the truth. Some of
the Christians, like Paul wanted to see the gospel car-
ried into all the world, but unlike Paul they lacked the
courage. They were timid about telling others about
Christ. But now seeing Paul in prison, are moved by
his example to get out of their comfort zone and have
become active in speaking the word of God without
fear.
Others were motivated by envy. With Paul in
prison they would see an opportunity to surpass
Paul’s work and perhaps gain a greater reputation for
themselves. Regardless of the motive for preaching,
Christ was being preached and people would be
saved as a result. For Paul that is reason for rejoicing,
because that is exactly what Paul desired to see.
Teachers can be woodcutter through the forest.
Teaching carries great responsibilities. James wrote of
this telling us, “My brethren, let not many of you
become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a
stricter judgment” (James 3:1). (NKJV) Literally: the
word means “stop becoming teachers.” All Christians,
as they are able, are to teach when and where they
can. Thus James is not trying to discourage them from
teaching. They are not to teach for notoriety. “Love the
work but strive not after the honor of a teacher.”
Teaching is basic to the continued existence of
Christianity. The early church depended upon the
teachers for edification. Paul told the young man
Timothy, “Till I come, give attention to reading, to
exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the gift
that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy
with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15
Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to
them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Con-
tinue in them, for in doing this you will save both
yourself and those who hear you” (II Timothy 4:13-
16). In his second letter to Timothy Paul reminded him
of this need when he wrote, “And the things that
you have heard from me among many witnesses,
commit these to faithful men who will be able to
teach others also” (II Tim. 2:2).
