Understanding the Bible
Part Two
By: Tim Shoemaker
As we were discussing in the previous article the apos-
tle Paul told the church at Ephesus, “when you read,
you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of
Christ” (3:4). To “understand” is to clearly see, or to get
the sense of the passage. Just a few verses further down
Paul said, “And to make all men see what is the fel-
lowship of the mystery” (3:9). We see this same con-
cept when the people who had returned to Jerusalem to
rebuild the walls were gathered to hear Ezra read the
Law of God to them. In Nehemiah 8:8 we read, “So they
read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and
they gave the sense, and helped them to understand
the reading.” God wanted His people to understand the
law He had given them at that time, and He wants His
people today to understand the gospel He has given to
us. So in this same letter to the Ephesians Paul com-
manded, “Therefore do not be unwise, but under-
stand what the will of the Lord is” (Eph. 5:17).
Thus we know that God wants us to read to un-
derstand His will but how do we go about doing that? I
hear people say sometimes, “I just don’t understand what
I have read.” First of all if we are going to understand the
Bible, there must be a desire to know God’s will. One
must love God’s truth. Paul told the brethren at Thessalo-
nica, “And with all deceivableness of unrighteous-
ness in them that perish; because they received not
the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” Such
desire will open the eyes, ears and heart of the individ-
ual. Mt. 13:15 – “For this people's heart is waxed
gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their
eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should
see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and
should understand with their heart, and should be
converted, and I should heal them.”
Secondly, there must be an honest heart. Jesus
said, “If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know
of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I
speak from myself” (Jn. 7:17). In studying give consid-
eration to the “W’s” of Bible wisdom. Ask yourself these
questions: (1) “Who is speaking?” Is it God, the devil, an
inspired person or an uninspired person? (2) “To whom
is the passage speaking.” In what dispensation and to
what group is the passage given?” For example the com-
mand to build an ark (Genesis 6:14) was given to Noah
at a time when God was planning to destroy the world by
a flood. The command to repent and pray to God for the
forgiveness of sins was addressed to an erring believer
and not to an alien sinner.
