We understand clearly that salvation is by grace through faith Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus saying, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Eph. 2:8, 9). But while salvation is by grace, it is not by grace alone; it is not wholly by grace. If it were unconditional, “wholly by grace” then all would be saved. Paul also affirmed in his letter to Titus, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (NKJV). The American Standard Version translates this verse as follows, “For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men.” However, the Bible clearly teaches that not all men will be saved. In fact our Lord taught that the majority of people would be lost. “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 "Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Mt. 7:13, 14). Salvation is by grace “through faith.” God’s grace has been made available for all men but to have the benefits of that grace one must have faith in Jesus. Without that faith it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). However, while faith is necessary faith alone is not sufficient. James tells us, “You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only” (Js. 2:24). For faith to save an individual it must act in obedience to the will of God. When the write of the letter to the Hebrews dis- cusses the kind of faith that avails he tells us that “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days” (Heb. 11:30).The walls of Jericho fell “by faith” but it was not until that faith manifested itself in obedience to the will of God who had commanded that the city be circled once each day for six days and then seven times on the seventh day. Men must obey the teaching of grace in or- der to be saved by grace. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, right- eously, and godly in the present age” (Titus 2:11, 12). -To be continued GUESTS Deerfoot Church of Christ THANK YOU Just a note to say thanks so much.
