Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

FOUR WISE THINGS – PART 4
As we continue our study on the locust, from which
we learn the importance of cooperation, let us learn the
importance of working together as a group. The locust,
when working alone, is weak but becomes a powerful
force in nature when they all work together. The Lord has
used them to punish those who were living in rebellion to
His will. The church needs to learn this lesson and realize
the need for working together for when we are divided we
cannot succeed. Division keeps people from obeying the
gospel. Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthian breth-
ren to correct the beginning of division when some were
claiming “I am of Paul,” “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of
Apollos.” Paul told them, “I planted, Apollos watered,
but God gave the increase” (1 Cor. 3:6). Paul gives
himself and Apollos as an example of how by their coop-
erating in their work together with God they were able to
accomplish a great work. The church here at Deerfoot by
continuing to work together with one another and with
God can accomplish great things.
The final of the four creatures mention in Proverbs
30:28 (in the King James Version) is the spider. “The
spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings'
palaces.” From the spider there are two valuable lessons
we Christians need to learn. First is the simple fact that
spiders are found in kings’ houses. They are found every-
where, from the humblest hut of the poor to the greatest
mansions of kings. Like the spider we need to go into
every home from the king’s palace to the peasant’s hut
with the gospel of Christ. Jesus has commanded us to
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to
every creature” (Mk. 16:15). Every individual has the
right and the need to hear the gospel and we have the
responsibility to see that this happens.
A second lesson we need to learn from the spider
is the fact that it is not easily discouraged. Have you ever
taken a broom and destroyed the web in a corner of your
house? If so you probably noticed that in a day or two the
spider rebuilds it. It matters not how often you may de-
stroy the web the spider will rebuild it. The only way to
prevent the spider from rebuilding it is to kill the spider. It
ought to be the same with Christians. The only way for
the world to stop us is to kill us.
When the apostles began preaching the gospel
they began to be persecuted. Initially they were arrested
(Acts 4:3); they were threatened (4:17, 21); they were
put into prison but without violence to them (Acts 5:17,
18, 26); and they were beaten (Acts 5:40). The action of
their enemies escalated from threats to beatings but with-
out affect. But finally, the Jews who opposed them sought
their death. In Acts the sixth chapter Stephan was ar-
rested and brought before the council. After a lengthy
testimony of the history of the Jews and God’s dealings
with them, Stephan concluded by charging them with re-
sisting the Holy Spirit. The result was that Stephan was
cast out of the city and stoned to death (Acts 7:58-60).
After this a great persecution arose against the church.
The Christians learned from the spider to is to persevere
and not given up and the world learned that the only way
to stop Christians from proclaiming the gospel was to kill
them.
