Certainty.
This week on Plant & Water a question was asked that Dennis Washington and I
spent 30 minutes answering. To say the question was powerful is an understatement. This
question came from a young man named Joshua Henry. Joshua asked, “"If the Bible is
our only rule of faith and practice, how do we prove that we have the right 66 books?"
In essence, we spent half the show placing the Bible on trial. Does it hold up to
scrutiny or not? Do we have certainty? If you are interested in the answer, please go to
deerfootcoc.com, click on “podcast” and look for episode 029, “Start With Why.” I do
not mean to leave you with a cliffhanger, but this question gets us to the heart of today’s
focus: certainty.
Paul emphasized to the Corinthian congregation the topic of utmost certainty.
Paul was a very educated man and had access to great wisdom and insight. He said this to
a crowd of Jews, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, edu-
cated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, be-
ing zealous for God as all of you are this day” (Acts 22:3). Paul was a tentmaker by
trade, and we know that he was successful in his work efforts. His missionary journeys
would have been costly endeavors, yet he travelled thousands of miles over land and sea.
Why? For what reason did Paul put himself in harm’s way? Why did he endure eight
beatings almost to death, one stoning with large rocks, and three shipwrecks? “On fre-
quent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people,
danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger
from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and
thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure” (2 Cor. 11:24-27).
Paul took his right and authority as an apostle of the Lord and submitted himself
to Christ. Paul decided to represent to the Corinthian congregation the topic of utmost
certainty. “And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the tes-
timony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you
except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 1:1, 2).
In our lives, we all have our own understandings and perspectives. As a nation,
the recent political race showed us that we are divided almost in half on many different
issues. While we have different perspectives and views as a country, we must share the
same certainty at the foot of the cross. “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in
heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10 -11).
May we be ever more certain of the unity we find in Christ and His word. May
we also choose to know nothing among ourselves except Christ and Him crucified. The
only cause for certainty.

An Invitation to Give and a Prayer of Thanksgiving
David was an old man and he knew that his death
was drawing near. He had hoped to build a house for
God but he was not allowed to do so. But while he would
not be allowed to build it, he could provide money and
materials for the building of it. David had set aside gold
for the things of gold, silver for the things of silver, bronze
for the things of bronze iron for the things of iron, wood
for the things of wood plus all sorts of precious stones
and marble. From his own personal treasures David
gave three thousand talents of gold, and seven thousand
talents of refined silver. Then David invited the people to
give, saying “Who then will offer willingly, consecrat-
ing himself today to the LORD?” (1 Chron. 29:5b
RSV).
The people joined with David giving generously to
that great work, five thousand talents and ten thousand
darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen
thousand talents of bronze and a hundred thousand tal-
ents of iron. Then all the people rejoiced because they
had offered all this freely to the Lord.
David then prayed to God, blessing and thanking
Him for the generous offering that had been made. He
acknowledged that what had been given was that which
belonged to God. ““But who am I, and what is my peo-
ple, that we should be able thus to offer willingly?
For all things come from thee, and of thy own have
we given thee. 15 For we are strangers before thee,
and sojourners, as all our fathers were; our days on
the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abid-
ing” (1 Chron. 29:14, 15).
David understood that they were all strangers and “as
such they have here neither right nor property.” They
were sojourners and as such “their lodging is as it were
for a night, in the mansion of another.” Thus they were
but stewards of all that was in their possession. Then he
closed out that part of his prayer with these words, “O
LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our
fathers, keep for ever such purposes and thoughts in
the hearts of thy people, and direct their hearts to-
ward thee” (1 Chron. 29:18).
We began a series of reminders of what we had
been able to do in mission work and inviting all to join in
this marvelous work by giving generously to God, and
you all responded in doing exactly that. Like Israel of old,
what we were able to give was only that which belonged
to God and which He had given into our care. We are still
stewards of all that we possess for it is God’s and not our
own, and may we rejoice because we have given will-
ingly to the Lord.
When the initial count was reported to us that we
had reached our goal one of our elders Ron Cobb stood
before us to pray to God in praise and gratitude for what he
had allowed us to do. And may we add to that prayer the
request of David that God will continue to keep such pur-
poses and thoughts in our hearts that we may continue to
see our hearts directed toward Him. May our giving to Him
continue in this way as long as we live. And may we teach
our children and they theirs to always have understanding
hearts that what we have is not our own but His so that we
will always be willing and active in giving to God’s work of
building up His church here and throughout the world.
