Linalool is a colorless liquid that is stable and naturally occurs as a minor constituent in roses, rosewood, and lavender. It is an optically active acyclic oxygenated monoterpenoid with a boiling point of 198-199C and molecular formula of C10H18O. It contains two double bonds, as indicated by its reaction with bromine to form tetra bromine. It contains a tertiary alcohol functional group, as shown by its reaction with PCl5. Linalool is isomeric with geraniol and can be synthesized by steam distillation from natural sources.
