DNA stores and transmits genetic information from one generation to the next. Watson and Crick discovered that DNA has a double helix structure with two strands wound around each other. DNA replication and transcription produce new DNA and RNA molecules, while translation uses RNA to produce proteins according to the genetic code stored in DNA. Mutations are changes in the DNA sequence that affect the genetic information.
