Josh Bailey created several promotional products for a fake indie band as part of a school project. His products included t-shirts, a CD, poster, and lanyard. According to his self-evaluation, he drew inspiration from existing bands but made sure not to plagiarize. Feedback from peers noted the consistent color scheme but suggested improving font readability and adding more variety. Josh agreed some changes could be made to the poster background and CD font color based on the feedback.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
3. Research
For the most part, my research was very helpful. I did keep referring back my
research and the already existing products that I had found. If you compare my work
to those products it is clear to see there are some similarities and inspirations
As for weaknesses, it is important not to draw too much detail from the products
already made by others, that could count as plagiarism. Struggling with software is
also a problem. Photoshop may not seem as easy for some as it does for others, and I
feel my final products would be a lot better and well designed given if I had a lot of
experience with Photoshop.
My audience research, more specifically the rock/indie band survey, helped me find
out more about my potential audience and their likes, dislikes and thoughts of the
kind of products I planned on producing. In the end this did help me understand
more about them and what design would be most appreciated.
To improve my survey results and findings I could have added more questions
for people to answer, such as information about themselves (Age, interests,
demographic) this way I could find out who part of my audience are anyway.
4. Planning
My plan and my final product consist of a few changes most of them minor but
one of them was that for the poster I was going to take the pictures of the band
myself and add them in. these pictures would also be used as a photoshoot
product and potentially be used in a magazine product, however, I got caught
short on time and couldn’t get the instruments, the actors or book the equipment
like cameras and microphones either. Luckily I still had time to do a poster
although not looking the best.
I did however find my plan useful when it came to scheduling what day I would do
what work and this came in handy as a checklist also, so I know I’ve completed
everything. Contingency plans were set up as well in case of any problems, this
helped where in case of emergency they'd be less trouble and stress.
5. Time Management
It’s fair to say I could have handled time better; my original plan to do a
photoshoot and use the premise of that to make a poster/magazine cover.
But in the end I didn’t have enough time and had to scrap this and just make
a poster on Photoshop so I did complete my project on time.
I think my products could have been improved a bit given
additional time or time to learn tools and techniques on the
software used. But with the time I was given I managed to
make 3 separate products consisting of 8 items.
The main problems with time I came across when creating my products were
at the start of production, when I was still thinking of ideas. I lost track of
time and ended up running out. On the other hand, I did try to catch up with
work out of lesson and I believe it helped me actually finish the poster
6. Technical Qualities
Placed next to one another it is clear to see there are visible similarities to the already
existing, branded product and my creations made in Photoshop. For example the
GORILLAZ T-shirt and mine share the design of including the band’s logo and also art
that is reminiscent of one of the band’s albums. Differences lie where I started to
think the T-shirt seemed plain with just these two pictures thus I coloured each of my
T-shirts holes the colour scheme of my fake band.
• Both feature logo & album cover design
• Both normal black T-shirts
• My product has coloured hemming
• Both have text in centre
• Both include Album name and artist
clearly on cover
• Both have smudged and artsy
backgrounds and bright colours
7. Aesthetic Qualities
I like to think my work came out as successful in trying to be
creative. Not only did I try produce different items for the personal
production project but I also kept them connected through
branding. I tried to make a brand with its on colour scheme,
design and mood and I think my numerous products show that.
If I could improve anything now, I would improve the logo as I
believe it could look better and more professional. I would also
then change my poster design.
Some of the strengths I would say I have are that I managed
for the logo to appear like they are imprinted on the clothes
and lanyard using tools on Photoshop, although it was proven
to be more difficult for the latter.
My weaknesses lie with the amount of experience I have with
editing software like Photoshop. A lot of time was spent fixing
mistakes I made while testing different tools to make the
products look nicer.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
All products share the
same colour scheme.
The items of clothing
are matching.
The CD cover, rear and
inside all have the same
background and feature
the band four colours
The lanyard and poster
are consistent as they
both advertise the
Manchester performance
Most of the text
among all products is
in Consolas font.
Recurring imagery
of acoustic guitar
and smiley face.
9. Audience Appeal
To make sure I appealed to my target audience I kept referring back to my
research/existing products during production to get ideas and stay on the right
track. My audience research was important because there had to be people who
would enjoy my products from the get-go, so learning what the public like via the
survey I made, I could get assistance on designs and techniques.
In my opinion, products like the CD was made with a lot of consideration of
what people said. I attempted an artsy and simplistic style with bright colours
yet dark tone and included acoustic guitars based on the band’s genre.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The overall consistent aesthetic
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The contrast in the poster doesn’t go well
– Include more clothing options (e.g. hoodie, long
sleeved t-shirt)
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– Strong colour scheme
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Could include more variety
– Change font colour on back of album (hard to read)
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The detail yet brief description about the band
and origin of it inside the CD case
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Have a wider variety of lanyard colours
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback? I agree with the criticism that the font colour for
the song titles on the back side of the CD case doesn’t go well
with the background colour and makes it hard to read.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback? I disagree when some feedback mentioned that
there wasn’t enough variety however I think there are more
than enough products from a new, upcoming indie band.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
The main change(s) I would make after hearing feedback about my
product has to be changing the font colour for the back of the CD as
from afar it is quite difficult to understand and it might look nicer in
white anyways.
Another major adjustment would be with the poster as there is a big
gap at the top of it only filled by the Fake Band Smiley face, as well as
totally change the background; the mix of all the colours do work at
catching attention but just don’t go and look ugly.
Something that I could add would be the option to purchase different
colour lanyards, that wouldn’t be so difficult to do and would look
nicer if there was a set of lanyards with all 4 of the colours.
