3. Research
Some strengths of my research is that I looked at some music videos similar to the one I that I created and
I analysed the music video and spoke about what the director has done and how they have made the
video appeal to the audience. I also spoke about different shots that they have used and I have explained
why I think they have used these certain shots and what effect this has on the video and why they have
been used. I also researched the conventions within the genre and explained what the conventions are
and why they're important for my music video. I think an improvement to my work would to to apply how
I would use these conventions within my genre and explain how I would apply the conventions and explain
what effect this would have on my audience. I also think a strength of my work was the genre
characteristic as I went into much detail and explained some of the genre characteristic within the hip-hop
/ rap genre and have explained why these genre characteristic apply to the genre such as a common one is
for artists to wear jewellery and tis shows power and success. I think another improvement I could of
made would of been to research some slow hip-hop / rap song as he song I filmed too was a slow song and
the music videos that I researched were quite up beat and were fast. This would have affected m work in a
positive way as it would of made my music video better because I would of been researching songs that
was at a similar speed / tempo to the song the I chose to make a video for.
4. Planning
Strengths of y planning were that I had a rough idea of what I wanted to create. I knew hat I wanted my
music video to include a lot of effects and that I wanted the video to look different from how it looked
when I went out and filmed the video. I think another strength of this was my concept board. When it
came to make my concept board I watched some hip-hop / rap music videos from some directors that I
liked and when I saw something that I liked I then screenshotted it put the picture on the concept board. I
think another strength of my concept board was how I broke it down so I have a section for locations that I
am wanting to film in , I have a section for effects that I like and I also have one for clothes that the artist
would wear. I do think a weakness of my concept board is that I didn't’t include and camera angle shots
and I think to improve my work I should have added some camera shots to the concept board. I also think
a weakness was my structural breakdown. I feel like if I were to do this again I would spend ore time on
this and properly think about what shots I would use and why they would be used , I would also add ore
detail about what is happening in each shot. I think my story board as a strength of my panning as it was
fairly detailed and you can get a rough idea of what is going to happen my video however however it was
hard to do a story board as I don’t want my video to look how it looked when I filmed it o I think an
improvement I could of made would be too say what effects that I am going to include so that It gives a
clearer understanding of what is happening in each clip of the music video this would affect the video
better ad there would be a better understanding of what is happening in each shot
5. Time Management
My time management was fairly good as I was able to do the tasks within the time
given. With additional tie I would of liked to make my music video more advanced
and try out different effects that are more complexed and harder to achieve. I
would of liked to practise using adobe after effects and see what I could of made
using that programme. I would of also like d to of gone out and film more clips for
my music video in various different locations. I think this would have improved m
work as there would be a various of different shots that I would have been able to
switch between and this would of made my video more aesthetically pleasing to
watch for the audience. It would of also allowed me be more creative with the
editing in general. I also think with additional time would have helped me to add
more detail when it came to planning my work and this would of helped my overall
product as I would have been able to have a better understanding and I would
have had more time to think about my product that I created
6. Technical Qualities - camera
Here is a medium shot which was used so that you are ale to see the whole artist.
This shot is commonly used within music videos. This is one similarity between my
music video and the music video ”Overweight” by Trippie Redd as throughout the
video they used similar effects however a difference would be the location as in my
music video it has quite a dark theme which is different from the other music video
which is quite a light theme. Another similarity between both these music videos is
that both look like there filmed using a low budget and don’t include fancy
expensive props such as sports cars etc. Another difference between the music
videos is that the Trippie Redd Music Video uses a lot of camera movement unlike
mine where mine is fairly still.
Here is a close up shot on both videos. A close up shot allows you to see the artist
clearly. a similarity between my music video and Trippie Redd – Time To Die is they
both have the same camera shot and both have included video effects to make
video look trippy. A difference is that the editing techniques that have been used are
very different. Such as my video has been inverted then I have changed the colors to
give it the effect and with Trippie Redds music video it has used many overlays that
will play on top of the video and they have switched between different video
overlays quickly. Hey have also included a blur effect for when there isn't a video
over lay the video is blurry. Another difference between these is tat my video has
been filmed outside in a field whilst the other is being filmed in a studio
7. Technical Qualities – editing/post
Some similarities be here between my video and Lil Skies – Stop The
Madness is first of all the effect where the artist is cloned and faded.
This is a very similar effect to the one I used the only differences would
be the position of where they have placed this and the size. The next
effect which is similar would be where the artist has been masked
around and duplicated tis effect is similar however it is also very
different at the same time. The effect is similar as it is the same concept
of duplicating the layer and then masking around the artist however it is
also very different because how they have positioned the artist as they
have positioned as they have put him on the left and right side upside
down whilst he is up right in the middle frame. Another difference is
that the music video by Lil Skies has the lighting on the side of his face
whilst the other side is dark and whilst the background is dark this gives
a mysterious element to the video.
The next effect is used in Trippie Redds music video and this is similar
because it is simply just a inverted clip. The similarities between the
inverted clip would be that mine stays inverted for a couple of seconds
unlike in Trippie Redds one where it is only inverted for a split second
and then goes back to the normal clip. Another similarity is both videos
use this skull and fire effect however they are used in different ways as
in my video has been edited so that the skull comes from the corner of
the screen to cover the artist and then the fire appears over unlike
Trippie Redd one where it just goes into the frame of the skull and the
fire which both appears at the same time
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work was creative. I personally think that this clip in my video
looks good and was creative as I have used an old vhs effect where you
can see different colours from the original clip such as you can see the
yellow and red outline around the artist however as well as this I have
made it creative by inverting the clip first and then giving it the old vhs
style look. I think a strength of this is that these effects were placed
neatly together so that they run smoothly when the video is playing. An
improvement I would of made would be to play around with the
duration of the clip and make it switch between the inverted clip and
the normal clip
This part of my work looked good in my opinion where I masked around
the artist and then added some noise to the layer to give it the static
effect. I think a strength of this is how I got the static to look effective
and to look good however I think a disadvantage of my work and
something I would improve would be to be more careful when masking
out the artist and when going through key frames be more careful so
that it looks neat and tidy and don’t rush it.
9. Audience Appeal
I have appealed my video to my target audience in many different ways. the
main way in which I have appealed my music video to my target audience is by
using effects. This is because within my genre it is common for effects to be
used so therefore I need to include similar stuff in my music video to keep the
audience interested. I have included video overlays on top of my music video
as well. One video overlay I have used is the broken hearts. I think this works
effective with the broken hearts because it links in with the song. Another
effect I used with the broken heart overlay is where I masked out the artist
and included the overlay behind him. Another way in which I appealed to my
audience is I included a skull overlay whilst I had the clip inverted. This attracts
the target audience because this effects looks trippy and it catches the
audiences attention. This clip of the skull also works well with the video as the
song is called a dark place and this clip looks very dark and demonic and
interesting that It will make the audience want to keep watching and it won’t
be boring for them to watch. I also included effects with bright colours such as
here I had the grass change colour from red to blue etc. I think this clip appeals
to the audience because my audience are young so these bright colours and
even the dark clips with bright colours are all eye catching and when the
audience watch this video it looks aesthetically pleasing and makes them think
how it is done and this keeps the audience interested.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• I like the effects that you used for the colour changing and also the
way the shots move together, I also like the way you had filmed the
music video with the angles and the way the main singer is
positioned for the shots. The song matches with the music video and
has perfect lip sinking. Editing is good.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• I think the main improvement of your production will be the amount
of shots used, this is because you have used some shots several times
and in 2nd glance it can seem repetitive. You could also use a bigger
variety of colours rather than just sticking to the basics you have
provided.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• Within your music video I really like how you’ve edited to style and genre of
the chosen song, the effects and colours used all really give of the style and
vibe which is clearly seen what you have chosen.
• The transitioning within shot to shot works really nicely with the effects and
the lip syncing.
• i really like what you’ve done within the distance of the background of one
shot it makes it look really different and aseptically pleasing to watch.
• You’ve used a great detail amount of effects and different skills, this really
gives the overall music video a professional look.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• If you was to improve anything within the video id maybe suggest adding some
sort of title text or text that provides information on artist and creator.
• Try and capture a more dominant amount of lip syncing.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• I really like how you have masked and mirrored some of the shots and the
use of effects overall.
• The colours that are presented in a really trippy way look really interesting on
screen and represent the genre of song.
• The transitioning works really well with the bright effects.
• You’ve showed a great skill of shaping and masking effects around the
background and focal points within your footage.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• Create a longer video, I feel your duration is a little short.
• Focus more on the lip syncing and make it more advanced.
• Add moving text, this style of song and the style you’ve edited would look
good as a lyrical music video.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
From my peer feedback that I have received I agree that I could have used a
various of different shots so that when it came to editing my video I could
switch between these shots I think this would definitely improve my product as
it would be more fun to watch as the video would have more clips in which it
would switch between
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree that the video needs moving text as lyrics as part of the song
because this is not common within this genre of music and it does not fit in
with the conventions of hip-hop/rap therefore this will make the video look
very odd and in general as it just doesn’t fit in with genre. I also disagree that
to focus more on lip syncing. I disagree with this because I wanted my music
vide to be based more on effects and this wasn’t the approach that I was going
for I preferred to stick with effects and give it a mysterious element
15. Action Plan for future development
My action plan for future projects would be to experiment with different camera angle and
camera movements I think this would have a positive impact on my music video as it makes it
much more interesting to watch. I would also of liked to filmed in more locations so I would make
sure that I spend more time planning and more time scouting for locations to see where else I
would have been able too film. I have found editing the music video interesting as it gave me the
freedom to be creative with my video and it allowed me to push my skills within adobe premiere
pro and in my opinion I think the editing of my music video has been one of my strengths as I have
been able to create cool trippy effects that go together well. For further development I would of
liked to use adobe after effects more as this would of allowed me to be even more creative with
the effects that i was using and it would of allowed me to include a lot more affects that simply
cannot be done using adobe premiere pro. I think a weakness of my project was my filming. This
is because I filmed in many different locations however when it came to editing I thought the
previous clips that I filmed didn’t fit in with the video so I decided to not use these clips and went
out again to film some more. To improve this I will make a more detailed plan, say what effects I
will include in each shot and I will also include camera movements.
