3. Research
To begin my research I started by looking at existing products of barbershop promotional videos as I was
creating a promotional video for a Barbershop so I thought this would be a good idea to start off. Watching
these promotional videos helped to give me a better understanding of the common conventions that are used
and it helped me to know how to structure my video. When watching the existing barbershop videos the
common conventions that I noticed at that they tend to use a lot of close up shots of the barber cutting a
customer's hair. A disadvantage for me was that I was very limited to what content I actually had to watch. If
there was a wider range of barbershop promotional video this could of work because I would have more to
watch and be able to develop my knowledge even more. Once I had looked at the promotional videos I went to
look at barbershop posters as I was wanting to create a poster. Some common conventions that I noticed for
the posters are that they were all fairly simple and didn’t have too much information on and they also used
fairly simple color schemes and don’t go over the top as in they just keep all the essential information on there
and keep it as simple as they can. The questionnaires helped me to understand what my audience is for the
barbershop and helped me to think on how will make my products appeal to this audience such as from my
questionnaire I found out that the majority of people that I asked about barbershops listen to hip-hop / rap
music and also wear streetwear style clothes so to make my product appeal to them in the video in the video I
included a hip-hop instrumental in the background and for the merchandise I made sure to have this influenced
by streetwear brands such as V-lone, Supreme and Fear Of God as this will attract the audience to buy the
barbershop merchandise. The subject information helped me to understand the history behind barbershops.
This helped me with my project because since I knew the history of barbershops it allowed me to first of all get
a better understanding about the project that I was doing and as well it helped me to be able to make my work
modern for young people whilst also linking it back to the old barbershop traditions. I think some improvement
I could of made to my subject research would have been to maybe include some more history about the
culture of barbering rather than just the history of the shop and where the barber poles came from. I think if I
did do some more subject research on the culture of barbershop this would have made my work improve
because I would have been able to link it back to today's modern barbershop and show in my work how it has
improved as the years have gone on and this would have possible made the video appeal more interesting for
the consumer to watch.
4. Planning
I think some strengths of my planning is that it helped me think more about the products I want to create. This
helped with my production as then I knew what I was going to create and what I wanted my final products to look
like. Another thing that helped me with my planning is my looking at different colour schemes that would work for
my poster and clothes. This helped me because I was able to see what colours work well together and I could
visualise where I would use the colours and how it would look once the products is finished. I think an improvement
would be to look at a broader range of colours as I mainly looked at , white black and red. I think I could of looked at
others colours such as purple and green even if I wasn’t going to use these colours It would have been a good idea
just to look at other colours and say why I wouldn’t use them and why I would as well as this actually seeing the
colours might of made me change my mind and I might of wanted to use them as they might of gone well with my
products. The mood board helped my planning because it gave of the sort of vibe that I was going or which was
a street wear / urban theme. I also looked at different fonts on my planning as this was to see which fonts looked
aesthetically pleasing but at the same time which fonts were easy to read and would look good on my products. I
think a strength of my work was looking at a wide variety of fonts as I looked at a lot and this helped me to choose
which style I wanted to use and which would fit into my work. I planned my work out well from layout designs to
what equipment I needed. All this worked out well as it meant that when it came to production I was prepared for
what I needed to do and it made the whole process a lot easier. I think an improvement I could of made to my
planning would be to have my shot list in a lot more detail and include more shots and to stick to it. Doing this
would of made my improve my video as it would be all planned out before rather than just the start of the video. I
think another improvement that I could of added to my planning would be to look at different clothing brands and
analyse the and write about it reflecting on how I can make my merchandise look compared to these existing
products it also may have improved my work as it might of helped me think of some new streetwear designs that
link into barbering.
5. Time Management
Within the time given I was able to produce a promotional video, a pricelist, a opening times poster and also
some merchandise for the barbershop. I think I managed my time well for this project however I believe I spent
too much time on my merchandise as I spent a lot of time trying to draw a couple of designs up myself using
the graphics pad which was quite time consuming. I also I spent a lot of time on my video as I had to go keep
watching all my clips and add in different clips. I also had to edit the audio for my video and colour correct the
clips so it looked as good as I could possible make it and so it looks aesthetically pleasing to the audience.
When I went to film my video I filmed a lot more than what I actually included in my video however on some of
the clips you couldn't’t hear the barber talking because of the other barber cutting a customers hair in the
background so I couldn't’t use that clip as you cant hear what he is saying. The other barber that I interviewed I
couldn't use those clips because he wasn’t talking loud enough so the microphone didn’t pick up the audio due
to him mumbling so I thought could use subtitles however this wouldn’t work as you cant hear anything he is
saying so it would just be any point. If I had more time for this I would of gone and redone the interview. This
would of improved my video because it would have been longer and I would of been able to get more footage
and to switch between shots more. Overall I think I managed my time well. Whilst in college I got all the tasks
done when I needed to and when out of college and I had to go film and take photos I was able to do this as
well and I made sure to get these videos and photos early in case I ran into a major problem I allowed myself
plenty of time to be able to able to come up with a solution. I stuck to my schedule that i did and if I was
running out of time for one project I made sure that I made up that time by either coming back to college and
catch up on the work that I needed to do or even do the work when I was at home so that I was caught up and
back following my schedule for the next upcoming lesson.
6. Technical Qualities
From the 2 opening hours posters I have here there are many similarities between the 2. one main
difference that I notice is how my poster on the left is more spaced out than the one on the right. The
poster on the left has fancy text where it says hair salon even though the text there does look good in my
opinion it makes it hard to read especially if it was to be read from a distance. A similarity that I have
noticed between the two is they both included barber scissors to let the audience know that it is a barber
shop. I think a small improvement I could of made in mine would be shorten the days and to use – instead
of to. This would of just made it that tiny bit better and I could have had more space around the side of
the poster. Another difference is at the bottom of my poster I have included the businesses website and
social media and the other one have just included the businesses phone number. A similarity between the
two is that they are fairly simple, they both don’t have too much detail in them and they both have a
simple colour scheme.
7. Technical Qualities
The similarities between both posters is that they both have the same colour scheme however the difference is that
the colour schemes have been used differently as with my poster it has a black background with white text and the
other has a white background with black text. Personally I prefer the black background as I just think that it is easier
to read. A difference is that the poster on the right has a border around the text. I think this works well for the poster
on the left as they have a lot more information than my poster so putting the border around helps to organise the
information and I feel that if I was to have more information on mine then using a border would be a very good idea.
Another difference is that the poster on the right has the brand name at the top of it unlike mine. I felt that because
this is a pricelist that will be placed inside the shop it didn’t really need the brands name there's however I decided to
put pricelist at the top instead of mark john barbering but I made sure that I stuck to the same branding just to
remind people of the brand and so that it fits in with the brand and the other products that I have made.
8. Technical Qualities
Some similarities to my product and the existing product on the end is that with my product I have the barber shop name
written along the back. This is so it promotes the brand and when people see it they will read it and immediately know it’s
a barber due to the fact it says barbering down the middle of the jumper and as well as this the name mark john is catchy
and it will stick in peoples head. This is different to the one on the far end because with that t-shirt you wouldn’t be able
to tell the brand of it unless you knew who designed it. This could be good if the barbershop were trying to expand their
products to a wider range of people and not just people that get their hair cut but as a clothing line that is supposed to
promote their brand in my opinion it could be done better. A similarity between mine and the end t-shirt is that they both
follow the same style of using streetwear styles to promote their brand. The middle tee is similar to my jumper as they
have a small design in the top right corner or a circle with some scissors however a difference is that they have their brand
name underneath it unlike mine and I think this could be an improvement and something I should include into my work if
I was to do this again.
9. Technical Qualities
From looking at my promotional video and the promotional video on the right I have noticed some things that are
similar and some that are different between the two. A difference is when the videos start mine begins by showing the
brands logo where the other video starts by showing the barbers pole. A similarity is that both videos use the same
genre of music as in the background of my video I have used a hip-hop instrumental and the video and the video on
the right have also used a hip-hop instrumental. Another similarity is that both videos have used similar shots however
they have both been used differently such as I have used a close up shot to film the barbers equipment and the other
video has used a close up shot to film the barber cutting someone's hair. The structure of the videos in general are
different as the video on the right focuses on mainly showing the barbers skill of cutting hair and this is done by filming
the barber cutting hair and using different camera angles of this where my video is more of an interview so that the
consumer can get to know more about the barber and get a understanding of him. A similarity of both videos is that
they both show the barbershop and use quick transitions that go well together with the music. I also noticed that both
videos use similar transitions of fading clips within the videos.
10. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks aesthetically pleasing. I really like the layout of my poster and
how I have used the spacing effectively and I think that this one a strength how I
have been able to make the most of the space without making it looked cramped or
without making one side looking like it has more information than the other. My
work as creative as I wasn’t able to find many barber shop opening posters so I was
designing my poster straight from my head with no inspiration from any existing
opening posters. I like how the background of the poster is a photo of the barber
shop but I changed the tolerance down so that it wasn’t as bright and so that looks
like the background is black but you can see the shop at the same time. I think this
was creative and this is one of the strengths about my work and it works really well
with the black text. The branding at the top works well as immediately customers
can see the brand and because it is largely placed at the top of the page it helps
customers recognise the brand from a distance. At the bottom of the page I
included the businesses Instagram and Facebook as well as the website. This works
because customers know where they can find the businesses. I think an
improvement that I could make would be to make this a bit larger as it is fairly hard
to read unless you are up close to the poster. Another improvement I would of
made if I were to do this again would be to use different fonts. Using different fonts
would make my poster more interesting to look and would just make it that bit
more interesting.
11. Aesthetic Qualities
From my price list it is very simple however it does what it needs to do to get the
prices across. I like the top part where it says price list as it is similar to the
barbershop logo and goes by the same branding of that and works. The text is all
very simple because there is a lot to read. The top of the poster where it says price
list is in bold text so that it stands out and the bottom of the poster where it says
the special rates is also in bold so that it stands out to the customer out of all the
information on the page. I like the layout of the poster and think it works well with
the spacing between each line and I think it works well where the text is positioned.
An improvement that I would have made to my work would be to include a border
around the price list as I think that would just be the finish touch and would make
the price list look that extra bit better. The main thing I was thinking when designing
the poster was to make sure that it wasn’t too complicated as I didn’t want to much
to be on the poster as it wouldn’t look good with all the information flooded into
one poster so I made sure that I just included the essential that was needed and
relevant for the poster.
12. Aesthetic Qualities
These were the merchandise that I designed for the barber. My like the first jumper
with the grey and white text on the back. Personally I think this looks aesthetically
pleasing and I think the colours work well together and I think it was a good choice
of colours to put together. This design was creative with it saying mark john on one
side, barbering down the middle and mark john reversed on the other side. When I
was creating this merchandise I wanted to make something that is different to you
everyday clothes and I wanted it to fit in with the whole streetwear style whilst
being unique at the same time. An improvement I would make to the t-shirts would
be to create a better design on the front. I do like the scissors going through the
skull however I just think that I could of created such a better design that would
look much more aesthetically pleasing to the audience and that actually promotes
the brand. If I were to do this again I would of created a logo for the brand such as
having a MJ logo that would stand for Mark John and just experimenting on how I
can have this logo then include the logo on the front of the jumper.
13. Aesthetic Qualities
My video started off by showing the brand logo and then it goes to a shot of the
barber with the question for the interview written at the bottom of the screen. I
think my video looks good and I think it looks aesthetically pleasing when there are
the cinematic shots that work go with the beat. I think an improvement that I would
of liked to make would be to of included some more cinematic shots where there
are just the shots with the music playing over the top. These are good shots
because as well as the fact they look good it allows the audience to see the barber
shop and to see what it looks like so that they know what to expect when they go
there to get their haircut. An improvement that I could of made to my video to
make it look more aesthetically pleasing would to use a tripod when doing the
interview and when filming the close up shots use a Steadicam. This would ensure
that all my footage is stable and it would make it look nicer for the audience to
watch. I think one weakness of my video is that it is very short and the duration of
my video is 2 minute and 3 seconds, I didn’t want my video to go on for too long as
it would have been repetitive however I do think if I made my video just a bit longer
maybe 1 minute and 30 seconds then that would have been a good time for a
promotional advert and if I were to do this again then I would definitely make sure
to make my video longer. I think a strength of my video is the way in which I
structured it and the video plays smoothly and goes from one clip to another
smoothly. An improvement here would be to add more transitions however make
sure the transitions don’t look bad as that would ruin the video and that’s why I
never used many transitions because I couldn’t find many that looked good and
would of worked well for a promotional video and I didn’t want to use random
transitions that would of made the video look like it has been roughly put together
without any thought.
14. Audience Appeal
In my poster for the barbershop there are many ways in which I have appealed to the
target audience. The first thing I have done to appeal to the target audience is putting
the brands name at the top of the posters. This allows the consumer to easily see
which brand that it is and this is one of the first things that they are going to notice
about the poster. As well as this another thing that I have done to appeal to the
audience is to include scissors and two barber poles at the top of the page. This is
because even if people don’t see the brand name and just see the scissors or the
barber pole then immediately they are going to know it is something to do with a
barbershop because this is what the barber poles represent and it is well known by
practically everyone. Underneath the opening hours it is underlined and in the it
included a pair of scissors the scissors represent the fact that it is a barbershop and in
general it went well with the branding at the top of the poster. At the bottom off the
page we have the barbershop website and above that we have the social media that
the barber shop uses. This appeals to the audience because social media is very big
with teenagers and the social media at the bottom of the page means that my target
audience can easily look at the barbers work that they have on their website,
Facebook and Instagram. Another way in which I have appealed to the target
audience is that I have a photo of the barber show in the background and you can see
that it is a modern barbershop so this means that they will do modern cuts that are
trendy. Even though my target audience are teenagers I have also tried to make it
appeal to an older target audience by keeping it simple so that all the essential
information everyone needs is on there and it has quite plain fonts so they are easy to
read and it appeals to the younger audience by being a stylish poster and not looking
like an old barbershop poster.
15. Audience Appeal
My price list appeals to my audience because at the top of the has in a
strong bold font price list. I chose this font because it is easy to read and it
looks good and works well with the poster. Next to this I have included
the barber poles because it links into the shop being a barbers and also it
matches the branding of the business, the barber poles is a way to appeal
to the target audience because these are an old tradition that have been
around throughout the history of barbering so it will appeal to older
people that might want to come to the barbershop and take their kids
their or even come to the barbershop and come themselves and it
appeals to the younger generation because they will be familiar with what
these barber poles are. The simple black and white colour scheme appeal
to the audience because it is plain and it gets the job done. I thought this
colour scheme was better than using a lot of colours because then it
would look too childish but using these colours mean it can appeal to
anyone of any age and as well as this the white text on the black
background makes it easy to read. At the bottom I have special rates for
people that may be in the police, armed services etc. And this got done in
bold text so it can stand out to these people. As this is in bold text in the
centre at the bottom of the page it can be seen easily by everyone and it
stands out to them.
16. Audience Appeal
For my merchandise to appeal to my target audience I have done this on
several different ways. One way in which I have made my product appeal
to my target audience I have kept they style of the clothes to fit in with
the streetwear conventions and what you would tend to see with some
big streetwear brands such as Vlore, Supreme and Off-White. I have a
design on the front of the jumper and also on the back on the jumper as
this is very common in the streetwear industry. On the front I have some
scissors going through the skull and this appeals to the target audience
because scissors shows the barber shop and the skulls are very common
at the moment and many brands such as supreme and Vlore are
including within their products. However as well as the aesthetic look of
the skull on my work it could also link into someone head that the barber
will be cutting with the scissors. Another way in which this appeals to the
target audience is on the back I have used the name mark john almost as
if it’s a designer however at the same time it promotes the barbershop.
The barbering going down the middle is to let people know that this
merchandise is a barbershop and this promotes the brand. An advantage
of having Mark john printed all on the back so many times is that when
people see this it is going to get stuck in their heads and they will
remember the name as it is catchy.
17. Audience Appeal
In my promotional video I have appealed to the audience in many
different ways. The first way in which have appealed to the audience I
when the video begins you see the logo of the shop. This is because it is
brand recognition to the audience and if it is someone brand new
watching the video that has never been here before then the logo is
placed here so they know the name of the barbershop. When I carried
out my research I found out that most people that I asked were all into
hip-hop/ rap music so I made sure that I included a hip-hop instrumental
to include in the background of the video. Another way in which I have
appealed to the audience is that I interviewed the barber. This appeals
to the audience because it allows the audience to have a personal
connection with the barber and for them to feel like they actually know
more about him on a personal level. When watching my video you will
notice I have worked my transitions around the music i.e. when the beat
changes the video clips will change. This appeals to the audience
because this is very common in hip-hop music videos for the shot to
change on the beat so therefore I thought that I would include that in
my video to keep my target audience interested in the video. Many
shots have been used to appeal to the audience such as close up shots,
medium close up shots and medium shots. There are many more that I
have used these are just a few. These shots all have different purposes
such as a medium close up of the barber allows the audience to clearly
see him and see his facial expressions.
19. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
I liked how the poster is plain and simple and it is easy to read. I like how the photo of
the barbershop kind of fades away in the background however it can easily be seen at
the same time. I also like the branding at the top of the poster and I think it goes well
together
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
I think an improvement to the poster would be to include a map or include
where the barbershop is located so that if this poster was around in town
somewhere the consumer would be able to type the address in and find the
barbershop easily. I also think you should have added somemore colours and
use a different layout so that even though it is simple it is more aesthetically
pleasing to look at.
20. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
I liked the video and how the shots change on the beat. I like the interview
with the barber as it allows the consumer to get to know the barber and
gives it that personal connection. I also like the branding at the start of the
video and at the end of the video and I think it goes together very well and
the video smoothly goes together
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
I think an improvement for you to improve your video would be to include some
videos of the barber actually cutting hair so you can get across the barber skill and
style to the audience so that they know what to expect when they go to the
barbershop and get their haircut
21. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
I liked how original the clothes were and the creativity that you put into designing the
products. I like the colour selection that you used and I think that the colours go well with
the colours that you have used and it fits the design really well
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
I think an improvement that you could of made to the designs would be to include the
barbers branding / the barbers logo somewhere on a design as this would of been a
good way to promote the brand to the audience. I also think it would be good to
designs some other products such as hair wax, brushes etc.
22. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
From my feedback I agree that the interview with the barber gives it a personal connection from the
barber to the customer as this was what I was going for. I was wanting the video to make the customers
understand the barber more and feel like they know him more and have a better connection with him
and I thought a good way to do this would have been within an interview, I also agree that It would have
been good to get some shots of the barber cutting someone's hair however this wasn’t the theme that I
was going for. It was more of an interview of the barber and filming the barber shop so the customer can
get a feel of the atmosphere. I also agree with the feedback to include a map or just include location on
my poster and I think that would have been a good idea if I were to include that. I also liked the feedback
to include some barbershop products such as a brush hair wax and I actually had this idea in mind and
wrote about it in my initial plans however I just didn't get round to doing it as i was more focused on the
clothing merchandise side to it.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I disagree with my peer feedback of changing the layout of my opening hours poster. I disagree with
this because I had many previous designs where I the layout was different and I think that the
current layout that I stuck with works the best and is most effective and I am happy with how it
turned out. I also disagree with adding more colours because i wanted my poster to look simple
whilst it being effective at the same time and I feel that if I added more colours it just wouldn't of
looked right and it would of looked a bit childish and that wouldn’t of fit in to my target audience
well. I also don’t agree with using different colours because the white text on the dark background
stands out really well, it is simple and effective as it can be read easily from up close and from a
distance
23. Peer Feedback Summary
I think that if I were to do this project again I would do a number of things different. One thing that
I would do different would be to make my video just that little bit longer. I would of liked to get
more shots of the barbershop and add more cinematic shots that change on the beat. I think this
would work effectively and it would also keep my audience interested as it looks aesthetically
pleasing and in general makes people want to keep watching the video. Another thing I would do
with my video would be to use a tripod when filming the interview instead of holding the camera
and adding a warp stabilizer. Using a tripod would ensure that the footage is stable and even
though the footage does look quite stable and isn't too shaky it would just make it look a lot nicer
to watch in my opinion. I think if I were to this project again I would create some hair products as
merchandise as it makes sense for a barber shop to sell hair products. I also would design my
clothes a bit different and try to add more branding on the front such as having the logo either on
the chest area or to include the logo into a design. I also would have included the location on my
poster for the opening times so customers know where the barbershop is located however this
barbershop poster was more to be placed on the door as it is a poster for the opening hours of the
shop so I am assuming that the customers know where they shop is however next time it would
have been good to include a second poster with the location on that could be placed around in
various different locations promoting the barbershop
