The document provides guidance for stage 2 of a research and experimentation process. It instructs the reader to research potential production techniques for their video, looking at a minimum of 3 related products. It also instructs them to collect supporting materials like clips, images, and guides. The reader is advised to assess each technique for how it could be used or why it may be disregarded. The document then provides examples of techniques used in sample music videos, analyzing shots, effects, and editing choices. It concludes by asking the reader to consider conventions of their chosen genre and artist, and how they plan to employ those characteristics in their own video.
2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1
In this shot they
have used a long
shot. This allows us
to the the whole
artist and also
allows us to see the
the background
clearly as well. This
is a great shot if you
want everything to
be in the frame.
In this shot it has been
edited to almost give off a
mirrored effect. By
masking around the artist
so that they can flip the
video and have the artist
go on to the first part of
the video without cutting
his head out of the frame
This shot that has been used here
is a medium shot and this is a good
shot if you want to have the artist
in the shot and see what he’s
wearing and also to see a bit of the
background. This is effective to the
audience as they get to see the
artist and they can see the artist
and will want to keep watching the
music video
This effect has the artist masked and duplicated and masked in
every frame so that it gives the effect of the artist running to
the other frames very quick so it gives and we can also see one
frame is another colour this is because they when he is
running it has been transitioned into another shot so the artist
is running into another shot whilst changing colour to what
has been masked in another frame. This is effective to the
audience because it is different and unique as two different
common hip hop effects and merged them into one. It is also
attracts my young audience because of the colours that have
been used whilst the transition it taking place and because
that it is aesthetically pleasing to watch and this will make
people think about how the effect is done and they will keep
watching the video
The camera shot that has
been here is also a medium
which allows us to see all of
the artist I n one shot and
also allows us to see the
background
This effect is simple and is a
colour overlay which has been
placed over the video and this
is a very simple effect
This effect is effective to the
audience because when this video is
played they add different colour
overlays to the music video so that
when the video is playing and you
see all these different colours it
catches the audiences eye because it
is the same effect just with a
different colour overlay and when
this is played quick it looks very
effective
In this shot they have used many different
camera shots here such as with the main
shot we can see they have used a medium
close up shot as this allows us to see the
audiences facial expression clearly and the
top part of their body and on the other 2
videos they have used a medium shot
On the main shots of the video
there are two other video in the
top right corner and the bottom
left corner. Both of these videos
that have been placed over the
main shot have colour overlays
placed over them and this stands
out to the audience because it
unique and isn’t often seen in
music videos however it is slowly
becoming more popular within
2019
4. Product 2
This camera shot is a
medium close up shot.
In this shot we can see
he has money in his
hands. This is often
used to show of the
wealth and how
successful the artist is
The same camera shot
has been use here of a
medium close up they
have used this shot
here because it allows
us too see the mainly
artist whilst allowing
us to the extras in the
background at the
same time
This shot also includes the line effect which is commonly used within
the hip-hop genre and got popularised by a director called Cole
Bennett. This effect works well because it helps make the video look
better little effect such as this. This effects also helps certain objects
in the video stand out such as from this clip the lines are around the
artist so this helps the artist stand out from the video
This effect where the artist has gone blurry isn't as common as
the other effects however this effect foes work well especially
when it only goes blurry for a couple of seconds then goes back
to the video. I think this effect works well when done quick
because it easily catches the audiences attention and is
aesthetically pleasing
This effect has been used within a
transition to change shots. I think this
works well because these are bright
colours and it catches your attention
from as these colours stand out
especially when it happens quickly
5. Product 3
In this shot there has been an effect masked on his eyes
where they glow out. This effect works well and it is effective
because it looks good and it fits in well with the theme of the
music video. This effect is common when the eyes get masked
however having the eyes glow out isn’t that common and is
very unique to this music video. This will attract the target
audience because it looks pleasing to the audience and just
works well in general
The camera shot that has been used here is a medium shot
however this has been filmed using a wide lens. This shot
allows the audience to see whole of the artist and to also see
what is in the background. It is important that this shot has
used a wide lens because it shows to us that the artist is in a
empty place running towards a car. We can see the car is a
Mercedes Benz which is a expensive car so this shows the
success of the artist and that they have a lot of money to buy
This shot here is a
very close up shot
and this shot
allows us as the
audience to see
the girls face
clearly allowing us
to see her facial
expressions
The music video is in black and white
because this is uncommon in music videos
especially when this video was filmed in
2019 so they wanted this music video to
stand out and to be different than other
videos. This music video is based
metalhead black mirror as that is in
completely black and white
This is also a medium shot and again is
used so that we can see the artist
smashing up the car. This shot of him
smashing up the car shows the artists
power and show s that he can afford just
to smash his car up.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
Some common conventions used within the hip-hop / rap genre are they use a variety of different camera
shots a close up shot which for example will be used when the director wants us to see the artists facial
expressions. Another commonly used camera shot is a low medium close up shot, this is just a medium
close up shot however filmed lower to the ground whilst the camera is looking u at the artist . This is a
good camera effect and is commonly used within the hip-hop / rap genre to make the artist look powerful
as it makes them look bigger suggesting they have more power than other artists and it also shows the
audience looking up to them. Another commonly used camera shot used within this genre is a medium
shot. This allows the audience to see the whole artist in the frame. This is a good camera shot to use when
you want to see the artist from their head to their feet. This will attract the audience because they are
often interested in what the artist is wearing and this is a perfect camera shot to do so. Some common
effects in this genre would be a simple colour overlay. This is where when editing the video there will be a
colour overlay placed over the video to change the colour of the shot. Another convention would be
masking the eyes out of the artist either changing the colour of the artists eyes and adding a glow effect so
the artist has blue glowing eyes for example or even masking the artists eye out using adobe after effects
and then including a video effect in there eye for example a video of fire In the artists eye. Another
commonly use effect is the jitter effect. This is where the artists moves around the frame then returns to
its standard position. This is a conventional effect because it is often used within the genre and the effect
catches the audiences attention and this is a simple effect however it can be used in a more advanced way
which is why it works so well. Another conventional editing effect that is often used is when the sky is
masked out so in the music video the sky will change colours which helps to attract the target audience .
8. Genre Chacteristics
Some genre characteristics within the hip-hop genre is jewellery. This is very common within the hip-hop /
rap genre because it is part of rap and hip-hop culture. Artists like to wear jewellery to try and show power
and success and to show everybody that is around you that you have “Made It” and an afford to spend
loads of money on jewellery. Another common genre characteristic that is often seen within videos of tis
genre is that they usually tend to have expensive cars within the background of their videos. Artists tend
to have nicer cars than houses in there videos a lot of the time because the main target audience of this
genre are teenagers and also male and more males like cars tan females which is why the artist will use
expensive , flashy cars within their music videos as it will appeal to the target audience more and also will
make the consumer more engages with the content. Another genre characteristic that you will often see
within music videos is they often include girls dancing whilst not wearing very much. This appeals to the
audience again because males are interested in females and this is a male gaze and is used within music
videos as one way to keep the consumer interested in the video and watch the whole video without
losing interest. Anther genre characteristic are tattoos especially face tattoos. Many artists get face tattoos
because it s a way for the artist to show their individuality. It is also another way for the artist to show that
they are successful because if they have face tattoos then it will be extremely hard for the artist to ever
get a job however because the are successful and wealthy then they don’t need to worry about getting a
job and they have the freedom to get a tattoo wherever they want and don’t have to worry about a
standard job. Designer clothes are also a characteristic used commonly in the hip-hop / rap as fashion is a
big thing within this genre because all artist want to look as good as they can and want to wear the most
expensive clothes and the latest clothes which are in fashion and are expensive. Some common brands
you will often see are brands such as Gucci, Supreme, Vlone and off white.
9. Chosen approach/justification
For my music video I'm wanting a location in a weird / odd place. This is because I want
my video to stand out and as I'm adding effects this will work well. It is also common to
see these sort of locations within music videos of this genre. This location also work
well with the song I am doing as the song song is called a ”A Dark Place” and when I
hear the song this is the location that I imagine. Ii am also wanting to film a shot in a
empty car park as it works well with the song title and as well as this you see various
different artists within the same genre film in places like this so it matches the genre
conventions. I’m going to include different effects where I will mask the artists eyes out
and add a tracking motion so hat I can add an effect in the artists eye. Effects like this is
common within hip-hop and rap as they look aesthetically pleasing to the audience.
Another location I want to use or my music video is to film in a isolated place as this
would work well with the song and the type of song it is as its an emotional hip-hop /
rap song. I wont include a narrative for my song as I feel like it isn't really used that
much within the genre, the genre mainly just tries to make the videos look good and
look pleasing to the audience and they focus on the effects instead of focusing on the
storyline because the target audience would rather watch a video that looks good and
that looks fun to watch instead of a story they have to follow.
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
11. Experiment 1 - Process
For my first experiment I went out and took some shots that I could edit
for my experiment. I experimented with a variety of different shots
from close up to medium close up shots. I also experimented with
holding the camera as well as using a tripod.
I then imported the videos into premiere pro and selected the clips that
I wanted to use and dragged them onto the timeline. I then used the
razer tool to cut the clips to where I wanted them and put the clips
together so they went smoothly. After this I then added the official
audio to go with the clips. I then added effects and the first effect I used
was a freeze frame. To do this I first cut to clip that I was going to use
and then hold alt and clicked and dragged the frame up to duplicate this
frame. I then right clicked the frame and used the “Add Frame Hold”
option and made the duration of this longer. I then masked the frame
by using the free draw Bezier option and inverted the mask. I also
added the feather up and put the left option up to 100%. An
improvement could of made would be to be more careful with the mask
and to play about with the feather option to make it all blend in
smoothly together.
12. Experiment 1 - Process
For the second effect which was the eye transition this was similar to
the first effect that I used. I had to duplicate the clip and added a frame
hold. After this I then resized the image down so it was right over his
eye and I then changed the opacity down so I could see exactly where I
wanted it to be and then put it back up to 100% when I was happy at
where I changed the image. I then chose the oval mask so I could
outline the eye. I then clicked the stop watch on mask path and went
through the frames and made adjustments if needed. Then I adjusted
the position and adjusted the key frames for this. I then nested together
the video main video and the frame I just edit so that when I edit it and
zoom in it will work smoothly. I then hit the stop watch for scale and
position and went to the last key frame and adjusted it to where the
shot was zoomed in on his eye by scaling the shot and reposition it and
then it went back to the normal next clip and started playing normally.
Some improvements I could of made would be that I need to be more
carful with the masking and take more time with this. Another
improvement would to be play around with the opacity and try to blend
it in with the eye more. I would of also liked the effect to begin from
when he opened his eye and that would be a improvement as it would
make the effect look smoother
13. Experiment 1 - Process
The last effect I tried to do was the line effect. This is
done by using adobe after affects. I imported the
footage to adobe after affects and then dragged the
clip into the timeline and double clicked it so it went to
a layer instead of a composition. This means if it’s a
layer it allows me to draw on the clip. I hen used the
pencil tool and changed the duration to single frame so
that the drawing would only appear on the frame I
drew. I then went through each frame and drew using
the brush tool. I then exported this and then added it
in premiere pro. To improve this I need to spend more
time outlining stuff and also try and use a variety of
different colors.
14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
I will include the include the freeze frame animation within my final
product however I will first of all make sure that the masking is a lot
neater and I will also make it more creative for example I will have
duplicate masks that so the artist is cloned. I also might include the line
effect that I have used however if I do I will make sure that I try
different colours and work on the speed and if I should include on
every frame or every couple of frames.
15. Experiment 2 - Process
To begin this effect i first duplicated the layer by holding
alt and dragging the clip up to the next video layer. Once
I did this I then repositioned the clip so that it goes
facing upside down and I then masked around the layer
and added key frames to the mask so mask would move
where I wanted it to.
The next effect I used I started off by adding a lumetri
color and making the video look green by adjusting the
color wheel I then again duplicated the layer and resized
it to 150 and changed the blend mode to overlay. I then
added key frame at the start of the clip and at the end
of the clip and this gave the effect of the overlay clip
moving over the top of the main clip
16. Experiment 2 - Process
To begin with this effect I started by masking around person I had in
shot. I inverted the mask so it would be the person that was masked
and not the background. I then moved every single frame and
adjusted mask of the key frames so the mask would follow the person
in frame. i then added two effects to the black video which were
which were noise and dust and scratches. And I then played with the
settings until I was happy with how it turned out.
After I had all the files together in the
timeline I then finally added in the music
that for the song and timed it up so it
went with the video.
17. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product? What about this process has been notable [positive and
negative]?
From my experiment I am going to be using the masking technique and
mask things out from my video such as the artists and even things in the
background as I think this looks good however I would take more time
with this and make it better and be more careful with my masking so
that it looks overall more effective. Think a negative part of my
experiment was the lip syncing didn't really go well as the person I was
filming didn’t know the lyrics well so I would make sure that when I film
my music video the person knows the lyrics and are confident in front of
the camera
