RESEARCH
For my music video, research didn’t play as key of a role in the
final product. There were plenty of pieces of inspiration, but I
had an idea of what I wanted the music video to be very early
on in the process.
Videos like “Shake” by Yeek did play a larger part in deciding
where I wanted to take my music video. It allowed me to
explore the area of post production animation and also allow
me to experiment with more unconventional camera angles.
Yeeks style of music and music videos tend to bypass the norm
and create a new genre. Yeeks music video "fatigued”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk2kHucZeWw is rather
unconventional in both style of music and the music video
itself. Mainly only using one camera angle for the viewer to
see. Unlike a normal music video which provides many
different camera angles and scenes to create a story and
illiterate the music.
However other pieces of research didn’t help as much. Music
videos like Phoenix by League of legends mainly just illustrated
a more conventional music video. It didn’t further my thoughts
of my music video other than strive me further away from
being to conventional. However I did notice that camera angles
PLANNING
Looking back on my music video. Planning was my weakest side. Its
more to do with contingency plan not being followed correctly, however
it also included just plain bad luck.
In the end, my music video took 3 different times to film. The first time
I wanted to film was on 18th of October 2019 and as I went to film I
discovered it was raining. This discouraged my actors from filming full
stop and therefore I couldn’t get the shots needed for my music video.
the second time I wanted to film was on the next Friday. Friday the 1st
of November. The same happened on the second time of filming as well
on the 25th of October, with rain taking up the opportunity to film.
Once I did get my footage however, I was easily able to edit how I
wanted the video to be and rendered it within 2 days. As oppose to 3
weeks of trying to get footage.
For the final piece, I wanted to put animation over my already edited
video. However in reflection, I should of realised that it would of taken a
lot of time and planning to complete. Each frame for my music video
would be hand drawn on using a drawing pad. And having at least 1500
frames to edit (2800 total frames in the 3 minuets of the music video) I
should of realised that this would of taken a lot more time then I gave
it. For next time I wouldn’t aim as high. I need to understand time
limitations that are in play. However if it was finished I would of really
added an extra element to my music video.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Essentially I needed to plan in advance to aid with my
time management. The fact that my filming took 3 weeks
to get, it limited my opportunity to edit the rest. This
lack of time management really hindered my music video
production phase. As it blocked me from editing and
finalising my music video.
To combat the time loss I would of made sure to stick
closer to the contingency plan and made sure that I was
100% able to film at the time I set.
If I did have more time to complete my music video I
would have been able to add a hand drawn animation
which would of really contributed to the video as a
whole. But even without the animation I still believe I
filmed my music video well.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
One thing to note with
a music video like 21
pilots: Jumpsuit, is that
it uses rather
conventional camera
angles. The one you
can see here is a top
down angle. I did the
same for my music
video with a top down
view with the camera
to also show the main
character as weaker.
Another camera style I used in my music video was close up of a
character, like what they did in the League of legends music video:
Phoenix where they showed the important player “faker” who is a well
know name in the competitive scene in League of legends. Any viewer
who has a little knowledge of the player will instantly recognize him.
As I said, this will give a good view for the person watching, allowing
them to see the person in shot clearly. I took note of this back when I
was doing research, and I wanted to apply this to my music video in a
similar way. I did this at 4 times at the beginning of the music video.
The image on the top right shows a direct view of the actor Arthur
king. Allowing the viewer to easily see and memorize the characters
facial features. If the viewer can recognize a character, the music
video might make more scene later. And this is exactly what I played
with. I wanted the camera to follow each character individually. But
TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
The main effort of my music video was
the post production process. I wanted to
add an hand drawn animation to most of
the frames in my music video. Similar to
the music video “Shake” by “Yeek.” it had
an edited animation on top of the filmed
music video. I already was using music
by Yeek and I wanted to stick to his style
of animation, by giving some of my
characters this green hair and body
parts. However I didn’t have the time to
complete it. Although I didn’t complete
the music video’s animation, I still was
able to edit the music video around the
music itself, but I would of liked to have
the animation to aid the music video.
Unfortunately I didn’t have time.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I very happy with how I structured and edited my music video. My main aim
was to be as close as possible to other music videos by the artist Yeek.
I'm happy with many parts
of my music video, however
I really enjoy how this
transition came together. A
quick thrust of the camera
to the ground and using a
transition to hide the cut. It
looked fluid and clean,
unnoticeable to a viewer on
the first watch. Another
thing to note about the shot
of the lamp post is how it
looks. It has little colour,
and no other noticeable
objects in view. This leaves
just the light to look at. This
form of minimalism really
captivates what I wanted in
my music video. To notice
the small things like this in
The thing to note when
looking at this shot
after the transition is
that you can only see
the character. This is
the same for the next
4 parts of the song.
Paired with a black
transition. Breaking up
the shots. For me I
believed that the shots
flowed very well if not
perfectly with the
music. Cutting on
beats and moving from
character to character
with verses and
choruses. This flow
really gave my music
video an edge when it
I wanted to have some clips to fill the music video so I could transition from character
to character at certain points. By having clips like the two shown below, I was able to
edit the music video more fluidly, and it gave me leeway to space other clips around
them. The clips themselves however were not meant to be of “good” camera” quality. I
wanted to imitate the feeling of being not sober. To do this I took shots at strange
angles and took each shot in and out of focus. I was mainly inspired to do this with one
scene in Yeeks music video shake, where the camera is pointed at the ground while the
camera man is running. Its an interesting shot as it suggests that they have to get
to/out of an area quickly. An unconventional shot, but it really inspired me to find
objects and natural scenes which also were unconventional. I was very happy with the
reflected exit sign. It takes an angle to give the object some sort of significance
however at the beginning of this shot its completely out of focus, and you are unable to
see what it even is. Slowly coming into focus. Very unconventional, yet it still works with
the video.
I wanted to make the viewer unaware of the surroundings in the music video, even
though I filmed everything within a 1 mile radius. Being very zoomed in, blur and plenty
of camera shake. Some shots were even filmed on the same spot but the viewer will not
be able to determine this unless they live in the area.
The camera shake is one of my favorite parts of filming this video. Some viewers told
me that at times it was excessive and I would have to agree with some shots. The aim of
this camera shake was to give the shots I took some natural feel. I wanted to imitate the
view of someone who was actually there in the scene of unkindness. And not just a
camera on a set. And at times I feel like the shake combined with an unfocused camera
really brought that out.
If its one thing I would change with my music video, is the fact that I
filmed at night. I did aim to film at night because of the lighting and
the lack of people around at that time but I believe that it was a
mistake to do so. First it made it hard to collect all the people I
needed at that time. And secondly it was hard to get the right ISO to
suit the shot either making it too bright or too dark.
Getting all my actors and crew together for a shoot at night in the
week was a difficult task. And it took 3 attempts to do so. Which
intern took 3 weeks. By filming at a more convenient time of day,
would be able to get my footage easier and therefor be able to have
more time to edit and animate.
The ISO of the footage was something I didn’t think about prior to
filming. In hindsight, what I should of done is taken out from college a
strong light to aid with some of the darker shots. Examples of shots
which don’t really fit are on the bottom and as you can see, its hard to
make out what is happening and in some cases the light from lamp
posts really didn’t help with the lighting of the shot. You can see this
clearly in the middle example.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
I wanted my music video to appeal to a teen to young adult audience. The
same audience who would appreciate the music behind it. With
unconventional camera angles and transitions coupled with a short “story” I
believed that I really did appeal to that audience. The music video wasn’t
slow, with wide angles. It had zoomed in shots with strange and unique
angles.

PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
 I understand that shots were too dark and I would change the time of
filming to earlier.
 Time management was also pointed out and I would agree that I
needed to focus on completing things quicker.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
My tutor wanted me to produce my music video without
the animation. And at first I thought that was not a great
idea, however with time being a large factor, I was
unable to put the animation on. I dissagree that the
animation shouldn’t have been there but I do agree that
it would of taken too much time.
PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
I would have included my animation because many
people told me that it really would have been a good
thing for my video, however I didn’t have the time.
