This document summarizes a presentation on building disaster-resilient communities. It notes that while natural disasters in the past year killed 20,000 people and caused $131 billion in economic losses, many nations spend more on disaster relief than risk reduction. For example, in Australia $50 million is spent annually on risk reduction but $560 million on post-disaster recovery. The document advocates for greater investment in risk reduction measures like early warning systems and building codes, which can reduce losses and reliance on disaster spending. It describes an initiative by the Principles for Sustainable Insurance to evaluate risk reduction strategies and work with stakeholders to better manage disaster risks.

Endocrine disruptors are substances that interfere with hormones and can lead to adverse health effects by mimicking, blocking, or indirectly affecting natural hormones. They are found in many products and sources and may cause disorders like cancer, developmental issues, and neurological problems. While evidence suggests certain chemicals can disrupt hormones, fully proving the link between exposure and human health impacts remains challenging. Regulation aims to limit endocrine disruptor use and remove them from waste and drinking water to reduce risks to human and environmental health. Insurers may face increasing liability claims related to endocrine disruptors if causal relationships with diseases can be established.

This document discusses the impacts of disasters on ecosystems and natural resources. It notes that humans are affected by disasters through their relationship with ecosystems, for example through fisheries, agriculture and tourism. Both direct and indirect long-lasting impacts on ecosystems are often underestimated, while disaster recovery and policies can inadvertently make communities more vulnerable over the long term. Science can help understand these risks and hidden impacts, while emergency responders can benefit from scientific approaches highlighting these issues. The document calls for better integration of science and disaster risk reduction approaches to protect vulnerable ecosystems, natural resources and communities.

Disaster Risk Reduction
• Main gaps, needs and further steps to be addressed in the
Post 2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction:
– Policy: It is important to continue to focus on prevention, but we
should also seek to build up resilience and robust communities
through improved awareness and preparedness for technological
accidents at the local level. Initiatives like the UNEP APELL must be
considered as an important process to help local community to
understand the risks, communicate the risks to the public, build a
robust culture of safety in the society as a whole and through
cooperation with industry and other stakeholders.
