1. The OECD High Level Risk Forum reviewed the risk of flooding from the Seine River in Paris. A flood in Paris could impact over 5 million people and cause economic damages between 3 to 30 billion Euros.
2. Better coordination of flood prevention policies across different government levels could reduce disaster impacts. There are opportunities to develop an ambitious resilience strategy, including improving flood risk governance and defining long-term financing for prevention.
3. Recommendations include ensuring linkages across flood prevention efforts, defining a clear vision and responsibilities, and improving risk knowledge, urban planning resilience, and infrastructure protection. Developing a strategic financial framework that maximizes coherence could help catalyze existing prevention resources.

The document discusses issues related to higher education and accreditation systems for engineering programs. It provides background on challenges facing higher education, including rapid changes in knowledge and technology. Quality assurance and accreditation systems are important for regulating education standards. The document examines accreditation criteria from the ABET system in the US and the EUR-ACE system in Europe. While these systems evaluate criteria like curriculum and student outcomes, the document notes they do not sufficiently address topics related to disaster risk management, which will be an important subject for engineers to study given increasing risks from natural hazards and industrial accidents. The document suggests accreditation standards could be improved by integrating more interdisciplinary teaching and dedicated courses on disaster risk reduction.

"The WHO`s Global status report on alcohol and health 2014 presents a comprehensive perspective on the global, regional and country consumption of alcohol, patterns of drinking, health consequences and policy responses in Member States. It represents a continuing effort by the World Health Organization (WHO) to support Member States in collecting information in order to assist them in their efforts to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, and its health and social consequences. The report was launched in Geneva on Monday 12 May 2014 during the second meeting of the global network of WHO national counterparts for implementation of the global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol.
The report provides a global overview of alcohol consumption in relation to public health (Chapter 1) as well as information on: the consumption of alcohol in populations (Chapter 2); the health consequences of alcohol consumption (Chapter 3); and policy responses at national level (Chapter 4). In addition the report contains country profiles for WHO Member States and appendices with statistical annexes, a description of the data sources and methods used as well as references." http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/global_alcohol_report/en/
Finland has the highest alcohol consumption in the Nordic countries, as alcohol has become more affordable, accessible, and advertised. Excessive drinking causes harm to many Europeans, including over 5 million children living with alcohol-addicted parents and alcohol being a leading cause of death among young people. While moderate drinking may not be dangerous, there is no definitively safe level of alcohol consumption. Collective drinking culture and lack of effective policies have contributed to alcohol-related problems in Europe.

The document discusses an integrated approach to risk and crisis management for terrorist attacks on public transportation networks. It presents a methodology developed by Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) to combine risk management and crisis management processes. The CUAS approach includes developing a crisis management process model, identifying interfaces between risk and crisis management, and assessing interdependencies. Simulation, tabletop, and crisis management exercises are used to collect data and validate the integrated approach. The goal is to enable transportation providers to more effectively protect their systems with less effort through an integrated risk and crisis management system.

The document discusses the development of a mobile application called SwissEventMap for collecting crowd-sourced information. It identifies six key problem areas in using social media for crisis management: (1) availability of technical systems and infrastructure, (2) economic and social reach, (3) information quality, (4) legal issues, (5) innovation costs, and (6) challenges with institutional adaptation. It argues that context-specific solutions are needed and keys areas to focus on include technology, innovation, finances, and organizational integration of social media with existing systems.

Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI) aims to reduce disaster risk and increase resilience through interdisciplinary research. GADRI brings together institutions to support research efforts through cooperation instead of competition. It also guides new researchers and maintains institutional memory to build upon past work. Some challenges GADRI may face include coordinating a global alliance. Solutions include facilitating cooperative work between members and guiding the expanding field of disaster reduction research.

The document discusses concepts related to ensuring a safe, secure, and sustainable energy supply. It introduces the concepts of risk assessment, resilience management, security of supply, sustainability, and multi-criteria decision analysis. It then presents a case study from the EU SECURE project that used these concepts to evaluate policy scenarios according to various environmental, economic, social, and security indicators. The study found that global climate policy scenarios generally performed best, though they were vulnerable to certain shocks like nuclear accidents or carbon capture failures. Overall policies that reduced fossil fuel use and led to greater diversification of energy sources and imports improved sustainability and security.

2) It finds that as the duration of living as a refugee increases, the probability of returning to Syria decreases significantly, while the likelihood of migrating to another country increases.
3) Refugees who experienced greater damage, losses, or deaths due to the war in Syria are less likely to return and more likely to migrate internationally in search of asylum.
